TNR 31-1-2013 Slitherin

Crew: G, Eric, 3 Sheds, Stunt

Route: Rainbow bridge, endon hall, lidgetts lane, back of Kerridge, poachers snicket, pott shrigley, bakestonedale road, bowstones, park moor descent, contour route to meet moorside lane, the un named track & watersplash to shrigley road, styperson pool, sugar lane, vale.

Conditions: Cool, windy, very muddy/wet trails

A stat free week

Notes:

A select few (Eric approved) crew flying the flag this week in patriotic red, white(ish) and Blue bikes.

This week the theme would be Harry Potter…well slitherin (I’ll get my coat)

3 Sheds delays start by forgetting his camelback, then bravely returns despite at least 3 raindrops of what we call “rain” J

Route designed to minimise unnecessary windage, muddage unavoidable!

A group of mystery riders at the top of Endon hall appeared to be missing a Phil – but they didn’t seem interested in ours!?

Plenty of sideways action along the back of Kerridge brideways, slithery but rideable J

Impressive tyre screech on the road climb to the layby as a landy has to bail out of overtaking Phil on a blind corner – only to succeed on the next blind corner!

Bakestonedale moor track not as muddy as feared, and the sheep have clearly been hungry as all grass is beautifully cropped! No getting away from a long slog to the top.

Wet but not too boggy over the tops, and back into the wind at Bowstones!

Phil now owns up to a dicky knee – and hopes for a stile free route back, G strangely silent…

Top descent down the moor – still gnarly at the bottom!

We now contour back into the wind, track is pretty boggy and there are several massive stiles, bike balancing in the wind requires care.

Mud gets briefly washed off as we tackle the ford on the cut through to shrigley road, before putting it back on round syperson pool.

Pace has been high and no stops so tired legs by the time we arrive at the vale.

Baguettes the new burger, Long Hop or Moravka, layering up as we are cold, and a tiny bill!

Axis of responsibility 2.5PG and home early.

TNR 24-01-2013 Perfect Pistes

From TNR 24-01-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

The excuses came thicker and faster than a blizzard, attitudes to risk sliding into wimpy wussland after bruising encounters with ice …Tales of legendary piste from Monday night convert a few of the wavers who MTFU and they join the elite band of winter sport enthusiasts at BL.

Full moon, no wind, and a pleasantly secure surface on the landrover tracks up “tarmac chazza”.

From TNR 24-01-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

There we find the snow as fresh as the day it fell, just enough to give big drifts for soft landing whilst leaving a clear line, just compacted enough for grip, just deep enough for plenty of fun.

Mandatory snowdrift bike rack photos, massive smiles on the descent (virtually ice free) and a growing realisation that this is the best most rideable snow conditions ever!

Other riders report brilliant trails, G desperate for some virgin snow too – we compromise and go with an assumed Kershaw folly – only to find it’s true and amazing! We decide to do Narnia too and thanks to more landy tracks make excellent time cross forest, grind up to standing stone, then tip toe across icy road into forest chapel.

From TNR 24-01-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

Almost rideable all the way to Narnia entrance – living up to it’s name in the winter wonderland.

More top tracks to the benches for a last taste of summer whisky. Time check at Witches cottage 9:20 means splitting into A & B teams for a thrash down Hardingland (immense!) and then down to Sutton Hall for 9:45 with empty legs….nothing broke…only offs were G’s gratuitous drift plants…

From TNR 24-01-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

Burgers all round, Winter warmer or Lord Lucan and post ride buzz :-).. final malts before heading home knowing we have had the best of it before it goes…

TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

From TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

Crew: PTD, EL Pres, Slim, Stunt, Butty, TJ, Mr Incredible, Bernard

Route: BL, Langley, Reservoir paths, lower dentists descent, forest bridleway ascent, nessit hill, s bends, main path & lower path, reservoir, Church House.

Conditions: -1 to -3 with light snow, windy higher up

Stats: Off to Bernard, double faff to Butty, single faff to Mr Incredible

Notes:

Shock as Slim is on time at BL and a rare Thursday night appearance from Bernard thanks to frozen footie pitches.

Lightly falling snow triggers intense route discussion of how to find any rideable routes.

Gritted roads remain snow free on the way up to the Smithy, then we find just enough fresh snow to make the icy trails rideable with care.

From TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

First faff of the night at the bottom of nessit as Butty discovers a distinctly bent magic link, and discovers that 10 speed ones don’t come off, eventually resigned to losing bottom two gears (well all that single speeding was good training then :-))

Minutes later Mr Incredible snaps his 9 speed chain as Blightly continues its shakedown of his Californian ride. Team work gets him back on the trail.

We wonder if warning descending passing riders about the slippy lower trail is actually a help or hin drance (but none of them actually crash within earshot)

Fully frozen dentist singletrack has been visited by the trail faries who have added jumps and berms.

From TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

Butty then has an epic failure of his new rear hub and as we get increasingly cold mutterings of dissent begin, although Slim & Stunt reminisce about Stunts first ride with triple faff on a snowy night 🙂

Butty retires to the Church House early, and we gratefully warm up on the steep climb to Nessit, clip in pedals useless, snow deepening, ice randomly close to the surface and wind rising.

Another first as Stunt gets furthest up the middle bridleway before pushing!!?

We huddle behind trees out of the wind as TJ gets the in ride refreshment in, never has cooking whisky tasted so good (add snow to taste).

From TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

Wind is so strong its pedal downhill time to the S bends, then the trails are perfect all the way down until on the lower path the noise of tyre on snow suddenly goes very crunchy and its don’t touch the brake time!

From TNR 17-01-2013 Snow Chains

L
All too soon it’s back on the road and into the relative furnace of the Church House.

Gammon or Ale Pie, Sir Phillip or Headless, much discussion about impending skiing, cheeky snifter before layering up for the ride home.

From Temperature inversion Jan 10th 2013

Photos from earlier in the day

“o” crew : Stunt and El Pudd

MTB crew : Kersh, 3 sheds, PTD, Eric, Butty, Slim, Coley,

Solo ride : El Pres

Conditions : Foggy and cold in the lowland, clear and starlit on the tops.

Notes :

Diversity is afoot, championed by El Pud. Alex has a go at “O” as he is forkless this week.

The rest of us head upward to escape the claggy fog of the Cheshire Plain .
After a rendezvous at ST Tea Rooms, we head for the TOr, then the “Yorkshire Northshore” takes us to Pyms Chair.
Paul generously volunteers to police the water bars; consequently we arrive at PC without punctures or dented rims. Only Eric , 3 sheds and Butty do the wind gather bit. Butty’s chain snaps !

From Temperature inversion Jan 10th 2013

The rest of us vote for an early bath and abandon via Jenkin chapel and blaze hill . The Vale awaits full of cheery “O” participants and warmth.

Google skymap proves more accurate than Kersh’s recollection of what Brian cox said. Pole star confused with Jupiter .

From TNR 3-01-2013 First Of 13

Notes:

Eric frets as 13 riders assemble for 2013’s inaugural ride!

A clothing challenge night – rather warm, but protection needed against water & muck flying from wheels.

Most opt for the RH side of teggs which was a good choice, but lower down a different story and Slim & Mr Incredible manage a syncronised slidey off in the mud 🙂

The hardingland vs leathers top gear challenge is proposed by Eric – who then (happily!?) finds himself solo on the “HARD”ingland option. A spirited effort saw him only a minute or so behind the main group leaders.

Chazza very misty as well as very wet.

Refreshment stop at standing stone car park – rusty nails & warm sausage rolls courtesy of El Pud, and mince pies from Butty 🙂

Mr I’s pathetic US rear tyre finally gives in to British grit and lets go on the climb to nessit – leading to the longest tyre change in recent memory, as the rest of us are on our second pint in the pub before we see the Hippy twins + Eric reappear.

Mildly rowdy banter and catching up = a good night..even if the gnocci was under par:-(

Comedy whisky order reinforces the wisdom that silly names don’t make for good drinking.

Posh pub tax slightly painful at the end 🙁

From TNR 20-12-2012 Soaking Santa And His Merry Elves

Weather : awful again…wet and cold, lots of standing water

Route : just enough to warrant cocktails and beer..
Barracks La, zig zags , old Buxton rd track , chazza, Narnia…cocktail bar one …Leathers ( no stop) ..across back of reservoir to cocktail bar two …then Church house.

From TNR 20-12-2012 Soaking Santa And His Merry Elves

Notes:

Sadly PTD and Stuntus Doublus had gone down with Man Flu, but Slim returned determined to make up for his Pre Chrimbo, norovirus-enforced diet of the previous weekend.
Butty was the outright winner of the ” spirit of the Xmas Ride” award, appropriately Santa-suited and with fully illuminated bike.
A huge turn out..16 Plus. Four more by the time we got to the CH. Excellent to be joined by veteran TNR riders like Neville , as well as our heritage members like the Doog, coley and Croxy 🙂
Dentist succession planning, plus the newly acquired academic skills in alcohol production :-), meant that the refreshments leadership vacuum ( or is that aspirator?) had been ably filled by young Sean. Two cocktail stops , and a variety of colours and flavours were served up. The biggest line of listerine cups every laid out on a forest bench ?

From TNR 20-12-2012 Soaking Santa And His Merry Elves

It was almost a placebo of a ride…but soon we were at the CH who provided very good service, with lashings of wassale and reindeer

From TNR 13-12-2012 Andy Has The Edge

Crew : El Pud , PTD, Butty, el pres, slim, 3 sheds

In da pub : TJ

Route :
Riverside park, beech lane. Bv route to prezzas. Climb chelford rd. hare hill and Alderley Edge extended circuit, then descend to Legh arms.

From TNR 13-12-2012 Andy Has The Edge

Notes :
Familiar territory , new route. Sneaking across frozen fields, lots of good tracks. Best AE excursion ever. Well planned and executed by El Pud.

From TNR 13-12-2012 Andy Has The Edge

Legh arms an excellent venue but expensive. Lots of lagers.

Cold and crisp, owns an Eric approved team size. New territory around Fin low. Cutting the owl path half way down. The bit from beech lane down the Bollin valley was brilliant. It flowed so well. Up at Hare Hill and on the edge proper there was much sneaking across frozen footpaths and through new snickets. Legh arms was warm and not too busy, despite a ladies xmas gathering . Warm welcome from the well turned out staff.
A little use of my gorilla tripod and camera timer…yields creative results.

TNR 06-12-2012 Is this a good idea ?

Crew : PTD, Butty, Slim, El Pres, TJ

Tythy Twins late ride : Duncan and Biggus Nickus

Route : RB, Tinkers Clough, Endon Hall path, Redway Tavern route to Ingersley Vale, Beeston Brow ascent from the east, long lane, pott shrigley, oaken bank lane twice, church house Bollington.

Weather : atrocious. About 2c and very wet.

Stats: one failed attempt to get food at the Robin Hood

Notes

Buttys chain kept falling off.
Much debate about route
Much checking “have we had enough yet?”
Lots of road
Oaken bank lane gave a couple of interesting moments as puddles hid ice
Interesting ascent of Beeston Brow
Never quite warm enough in ch. where is a pub with a fire when you need it?
Good service in ch. stew and chips. Puddings for many.
Jura salute on long lane…when it had stopped raining for a bit
Home soon after 11..

TNR 29-11-2012 Moon Madness

From TNR 29-11-2012 Moon-madness

Crew : Langley joe, PTD, El Pres. Eric. Kersh , Butty, Slim, big events Bernard

Route : Cat and Fiddle road to Shining Tor tea rooms, the c & F, Danebower Hollow, the full Chumby, Wildboarclough Valley Rd, north shore route to icy and madness of punctures in subzero.

Conditions : cold and moonlit, with lots of frozen bits.

notes :

Oh no, another long road climb to the tea rooms. But the rd was quiet, and the moon was full. When we went to stealth mode the effect was magic. We cast shadows in the moonlight. We rode through a blue white landscape of gentle 3 d. We were blessed.
Had big events Bernard known this ? Maybe it’s an almost 55 thing.

From TNR 29-11-2012 Moon-madness

As we rode the Danebower hollow track the ice patches warned of what was yet to come. Eric was fearless on his newly acquired, Halifax-built full susser.

Thoughts of a three shires route were abandoned . A plot was hatched to do the ” full chumby “. This was a good plot. Frozen muddy tussocks good.

We assembled at the bit by the waterfall. Spirits were high. We wondered what chumby was like in her nether regions…..dry bits good, wet bits less treacherous than we feared.

As we hit the valley bottom we opened the freezer door. Must have been -5.

Standing stone ascent thawed us out, and we paused briefly to defrost with a quick nip of Jura. Marvellous. First frost of the winter, properly celebrated. PTD took the lead again and food orders were relayed to the CH.

From TNR 29-11-2012 Moon-madness

Debate about the route down was brief. It would be rude to avoid the forest. The Nature conservation area was traversed but conserved.
We all stopped to wonder at the sight of a 22degree ice halo around the Moon ( see links below ). Then on down and around the reservoir, past the LS , and then down to the CH.
Sir Phillip, pride of Pendleton…later whisky….pies to die for ..only Butty had the crumble. Home by 12. without the Dan the axis never gets a firm grip

TNR 22-11-2012 EricQuest VI

From TNR 22-11-2012 Ericquest 6

This years annual highlight co-incided with a weather system of which Noah was familiar which almost caused a perfect storm when cancellation mooted 2 hours before kick off!

Both youth and experience voted that the show must go on!! So wet riders arrived two by two to the the garage start to imbibe the customary excellent stirrup cup and legendary (A.J.Boons of Chelford) sausage rolls provided by our hostess with the mostess Carol :-). A quick syncronisation of timepieces, admiring glances to the BeFe replacement(s) , food order for later and the teams are off…well apart Billy who this year decides to break himself before the ride starts, then Butty’s attempt to arrive by train is derailed by the failure of the train to arrive and his failure to interpret his App to realise that it’s not going to, so riding in arrives 25 mins late. Luckily the officials are in generous mood..

This year a northerly bent with controls scattered around kerridge ridge, oakenbank and rainow, with a teggs/chazza bias later. The bunny was not a control this year! Huge amounts of standing water, and offroad stupidly muddy, so plenty of road vs direct dilemmas. The biggest issue was preventing the paperwork from disintegrating into unreadable mush!

Two and a bit hours later, and 5 teams converge on the Smithy, and impressively all on time (give or take a minute). Well apart from Eric who arrived late! and Butty & Slim who had permission to arrive at T+25.

Wet kit literally steams in front of the fire, control sheets are submitted and thirst is quenched, food is devoured , Dunc arrives for pub banter 🙂

Now the all important results! and the Thornton hegemony is broken!!! the last minute pairing of Nick & Strick has prevailed by one control.

Butty gets the best excuse award for late starting, and all are congratulated for completing in the conditions (although it did stop raining eventually)

Winners celebrate, former winners slink away without paying!!!, record numbers of whisky’s to warm from the inside before heading home

From TNR 22-11-2012 Ericquest 6

Thanks once more to our intrepid organiser who kindly reminded us that he had two nice dry rides to set out the course 🙂

Next year..will Thornton Jr decide he needs a faster partner??
