This years annual highlight co-incided with a weather system of which Noah was familiar which almost caused a perfect storm when cancellation mooted 2 hours before kick off!
Both youth and experience voted that the show must go on!! So wet riders arrived two by two to the the garage start to imbibe the customary excellent stirrup cup and legendary (A.J.Boons of Chelford) sausage rolls provided by our hostess with the mostess Carol :-). A quick syncronisation of timepieces, admiring glances to the BeFe replacement(s) , food order for later and the teams are off…well apart Billy who this year decides to break himself before the ride starts, then Butty’s attempt to arrive by train is derailed by the failure of the train to arrive and his failure to interpret his App to realise that it’s not going to, so riding in arrives 25 mins late. Luckily the officials are in generous mood..
This year a northerly bent with controls scattered around kerridge ridge, oakenbank and rainow, with a teggs/chazza bias later. The bunny was not a control this year! Huge amounts of standing water, and offroad stupidly muddy, so plenty of road vs direct dilemmas. The biggest issue was preventing the paperwork from disintegrating into unreadable mush!
Two and a bit hours later, and 5 teams converge on the Smithy, and impressively all on time (give or take a minute). Well apart from Eric who arrived late! and Butty & Slim who had permission to arrive at T+25.
Wet kit literally steams in front of the fire, control sheets are submitted and thirst is quenched, food is devoured , Dunc arrives for pub banter 🙂
Now the all important results! and the Thornton hegemony is broken!!! the last minute pairing of Nick & Strick has prevailed by one control.
Butty gets the best excuse award for late starting, and all are congratulated for completing in the conditions (although it did stop raining eventually)
Winners celebrate, former winners slink away without paying!!!, record numbers of whisky’s to warm from the inside before heading home

Thanks once more to our intrepid organiser who kindly reminded us that he had two nice dry rides to set out the course 🙂
Next year..will Thornton Jr decide he needs a faster partner??
