Colder than we thought it would be.

From TNR 11-04-2013 Spirit Of The caterpillar

Old Buxton, zig zags, bridleway from back eddisbury , walker barn, up to start of chazza, quickly abandoned any thoughts of chazza…through the woods to find a route to Narnia.
We found slaughter of a forest .

From TNR 11-04-2013 Spirit Of The caterpillar

We found a downhill bit . A digger. Malt mix tipple courtesy of PTD.

From TNR 11-04-2013 Spirit Of The caterpillar

Hardlingland…still some snow…around bottoms reservoir. Climb to Leathers smithy . Order nosh. Return to bikes and do a circuit of the reservoir paths. A bit slack but fun.

TNR 4-4-2013 Wingather Rocks!

Crew: El Pres, TJ, Butty, Dunc, G, Slim, 3 Sheds, Mr Incredible, Stunt

Route: Rainbow bridge, Redway, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Blaze Hill, Pike Road, Bank Lane, Jenkins Chapel, Pym Chair, Wingather rocks, Kettleshulme, Bakestonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Vale

Conditions: Cold and Windy, remnants of big drifts, dry.

Stats: Slim breaks his saddle!

Notes:
A Tythy friendly start and finish
LIGHT RIDING 🙂
Ambitious route suggested, and mostly out of the wind until Pym chair.
…only the other week Slim was saying he hadn’t broken a seat post in ages, still true but saddle failure delays blaze hill climb, leaving others to cool down at the top.
G uncharacteristically attempts to change route to a slackers ( and fails)
Spectacular sunset across the plain.
Bank Lane good – apart from some impressive sheet ice, which a few folks get in the wrong side of and have to crawl across 🙂
Lights on (and 3sheds off..poorly knee) at Jenkins Chapel, and dark by Pym Chair.
Single track to Wingather ace
Hot Randy toddies from Stunt to celebrate the light nights, Brandy from TJ to mark his last ride with us for a while.
Out of time for the climb past the moorside and sponds, so a rapid road return to the vale.
Bolly best, Moravka, and great food 🙂
Mr Incredible plots a home based ride for us, Pete tests interest in moraine, Spain or Majorca for potential 50th trip.

TNR 28-3-2013 Snow way through

From TNR 28-03-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

Crew: PTD, Eric, El Pres, 3 sheds, Butty, Slim, Stunt
Pub: Big Nic, Shaun

Route: BL, old road, Teggs, LH cut across to Crooked Yard Lane, Walker Barn, Charity Lane Entrance, Hacked Way Lane to gate, Witches cottage, old path towards leathers, Church House.

Conditions: Cold, mix of massive drifts, some or no snow, muddy ground where the sun had warmed it earlier.

stats: a stat free night.

Notes: An almost Eric friendly group assembles.

From TNR 28-03-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

weekend rides report Hardingland “full” and Langley affected by massive drifts. All this at BL where there is no snow be seen.

Light covering and frozen puddles on the zig zags, drifty but passable up to Teggs, virtually snows free on the RHS, icy excitement on the LHS. Muddy push across probably faster than risking the exposed track along the bottoms.

Crooked Yard Lane initially clear, then passable for bikes past ever larger drifts…then the static lights we have been ascending towards since exiting Teggs way become a JCB digging out 8ft full on lane blocking snow field.

Hike a bike up and round the side on the crispy tops, trickier to get down safely the other side into the road, then realising we are trapped between two diggers, so up and over the other side into the field, quick roll of a whole JCB bucket scoop of snow “snowball” down the slope 🙂 and out onto meltwater, salt and ice!

Road to chazza pretty good apart from occasional sheet black ice!!

chazza full, tiptoe down hacked way in case of more ice, cross the logging trail (more forest trashing!!!) and down the old path on fresh snow for the best riding of the night. So good PTD and Eric do it again:-)

Church house for warmth, Rambler, Pendle and grub. Plenty of bikers in, including more train buddies for Slim. Big Nic arrives for tales of fat bike fun, and Shaun drops in to keep us amused. Double chasers before rolling home 🙂

In addition to this TNR report I thought it would be timely to add a couple of “wintery peaks photos” in celebration of winters last stand ..

From TNR 28-03-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

This is an avalanche at Winnats pass near Castleton, in late March. Avalanche and Peak District are not words we normal put together.

From TNR 28-03-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

A gritter nearly engulfed near Longnor.

TNR 21-03-2013 Granny breaks a tooth

From TNR 21-03-2013 Smashing Grannies Teeth

Crew : El Pud, TJ, Butty, El Pres, PTD, Mr I, Dan, 3sheds, Slim

Pub : Dunc and Biggus Nickus

Route : Bl – urban to Tesco. Riverside pk. Chelford rd. hare hill. Messing about round the edge. Hare hill. Chelford rd. the Legh arms.

From TNR 21-03-2013 Smashing Grannies Teeth

Weather : Cold and very blowy. Snowing on departure from pub at midnight.

Stats : 3sheds puncture , Slim full head over bars off.

Notes :

As it is blowing a hoolie up high…we let El Pud take us to the edge.

an unusual , ginnel strewn route to Riverside Park 🙂

From TNR 21-03-2013 Smashing Grannies Teeth

Within minutes of attaining the AE area PTD has a terminal failure of granny ring with a bent and broken tooth. Even a master dentist can’t fix this one.

Dan appeared from nowhere…to join an early round of rusty nails courtesy of the Pud, bringing with him enchanting tales of “the recovery nurse”. We have named her “flo”.

As ever El Pud’s knowledge of this territory is superb, and we had plenty of fun without even venturing to the Southern side of the road.

Our second inflight refreshment came courtesy of PTD.

Perhaps this led to the unusually high degree of merriment in the Legh arms.

Here we were seated in the “eating bit” , a TNR first but most agreeable

All to soon the witching hour was upon us, breaking the AOE just before we succumbed to its vice like grip 🙂

From TNR 21-03-2013 Smashing Grannies Teeth

The journey home was a struggle against winter’s last stand, fortunately shorter for the tythy boys than the southern dwellers.

TNR 14-3-2013 Winters not over yet!

From TNR 14-03-2013 Winters Not Over Yet

Crew: El Pres, PTD, G, Slim, Eric, Dave H, Butty, TJ, 3 Sheds, Stunt

Route: BL, Walker Barn, Chazza & extension, Stanley Arms, Cat, Danebower Hollow with early R turn into Chumby, Standing stone, not the S bends, fast tracks down and round the resevoir, Sutton Hall

From TNR 14-03-2013 Winters Not Over Yet

Conditions:

Dry & Still at BL , Drizzle/Light Snow & breezy at Walker Barn, Horizontal light snow & icy blast at Cat.

Slush on Chazza, light snow covering in forest & higher up, no ice, dryish trails underneath.

Stats: TJ Puncture

Notes:

Shock as Slim arrives on the dot of 6:30 at BL!! and Eric arrives without the need for lights (although later shows off his time to darkness display on the back – uber cool..and there must be a Knight Rider joke in there somewhere?).

Mr Bolly Bikefest joins us for a dose of real biking 😉

Bigger Shock as 3 Sheds arrives despite warnings of precipitation!!! and brings reports of snow in Rainow!?

Route plan becomes go high but pause at walker barn to see if weather rules out going high, light snow and a breeze but no sign of low cloud, so we MTFU and go to the cat via a strangely slushy chazza.

TJ stops by the Stanley to repair a puncture, leaving the whippets to freeze at the cat, and we are whiskers away from a split group to stave off hypothermia.

Biting wind, and horizontal snow across the tops – exposed flesh numbing rapidly 🙁

Snow covered RH descent into Chumby made interesting with dry grass/snow building up then peeling off tyres.

Chumby pretty dry and the ford very low. Rapid thrash around the forest to keep warm and into Sutton Hall.

From TNR 14-03-2013 Winters Not Over Yet

Lucan or Leffe, coal stoking the fire (“the chimney canna take the wood captain”!) food devoured to replace burnt calories, tales of dubious events at Buxton Opera House and a fine whisky finish.

TNR 08-03-2013 Badger Cull

From TNR 08-03-2013 Badger Cull

Crew : Butty, Kersh, TJ, PTD, 3sheds, slim, Eric, Dan, El Pres, Mr I

Pub: Mawds

Route : Zig zags, Teggs descent and “traverse left” (=push uphill and slippy as eck) to drop down above stream, Holehouse lane, Leathers, ascent to Witche’s Cottage , Hardingland, Crooked Yard Lane , Bull Hill, bus stop tipple, Oaken bank lane, the Vale.

Conditions: light rain, easterly breeze. Cold.

Stats: one badger collision (Kersh and almost Dan as well), one seriously jammed chain (Slim).

Notes:

Mini guinness polygon of evil at Rainow bus stop ..a TNR first !

3Sheds and Eric depart before the pub , perhaps fearing the consequences of the POE

Badger collision on Hardlingland descent claims Kersh, but not quite Dan.

Slim’s bad gear change on H’land resultants in a major chain jam…conventional gears not always better than a hub ?

The vale is warm and courteous as ever

TNR 28-2-2013 Prodigal Sons Return

From TNR 28-02-13 Apricot Spirit

Crew: PTD, Dan, Butty, TJ, Slim, 3 Sheds, Joe, Stunt, G, Mr Incredible

Pub: El Pud

Route: BL, zig zags, Teggs, reverse hardingland, Hacked Way lane, Chazza & extension, standing stone, reverse back of the moon, grassy descent, Main track, lower path, reservoir, church house.

From TNR 28-02-13 Apricot Spirit

Conditions: Dry, Cold, Windy higher up. Dry trails

Stats: Mandatory Thorn Puncture for G

No offs reported (maybe a few dabs..?)

From TNR 28-02-13 Apricot Spirit

Notes:

Our Prodigal “sons” Dan & Joe returneth (albeit a bit late)

Despite calm conditions at BL we receive dire warnings of wind higher up from the paragliding community

Tootle up to teggs and huddle awaiting Joe in a stiff breeze

Teggs in great condition

The evil ascent to Chazza at least keeps us out of the wind ..and provides Dan & G with a strava segment to attack (7th)

A Coley cameo as we regroup..but he’s not riding with us tonight!

Something big had trashed chazza’s sides (logging wagon), icy in places but not in a dangerous way , extension extra loose on the lower section (for no apparent reason!?)

Back of the moon not frozen this week but still very firm, and a long overdue return to the grassy descent 🙂

Peach Brandy from TJ…just because (neat mini shot glasses!)

From TNR 28-02-13 Apricot Spirit

Rapid descent to Church house for pre ordered food and a warm fire.

Headless & Beaufort Scale, G orders a round of baby Guinesses, El Pud graces us with his “executive producer” status 😉 Glenmorangie snifters, a realization that we owe a bit more than we thought and off home.

TNR 21-2-2013 Wind Chill

From TNR 21-02-13 Wind Chill

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Mr Incredible, 3 Sheds, Eric, Dunc, Butty, TJ, Stunt

Pub: Slim

Route: BL, Teggs, Resevoir, lower descent, shutlingsloe steps, back of the moon, standing stone, forest chapel, lower charity, narnia, hardingland, Sutton hall.

Conditions: -2 with a bitter wind, trails freeze dried and dusty

Stats:

Offs – El Pres, Mr Incredible

Faffs – 3 Sheds tweaks his spokes

Notes:

late forum posting attempting to hijack start point are given short shrift by an assertive Stunt! …so we meet as planned at BL (To find that neither offender actually makes the start!!)

PTD suggests a plan B route as high winds affecting the high route, Top of Teggs bad enough 🙁

Dry trails makes for good riding…if you can feel your fingers!

Plenty of uphill to warm up before the bermy singletrack – jumps have evolved again, and the big bomb hole catches out El Pres 🙂

long grind to Shutlingsloe steps then into the evil wind.

frozen mud is only skin deep as Eric and Stunt find out – but it’s easy to pick off as it freezes before soaking in.

PTD blows his forking chambers at the bottom of the back of the moon.

Comms finally established with a very late Slim – but he is not in position to enjoy chilled Baileys at the Narnia bench (Nil points for Mr I for forgetting the Kaluha!)

Chilled riders hot foot to pub via hardingland (watch out for frozen ruts on the flat bits mr I!)

PTD nips home to swap bikes and then fails to id TJ doing his usual one direction navigation (and hence missing in action for 20 mins)

Blond Witch the best of the brews, what no chips with falafel pittas! Conversation and Tandem talk congregates around the open fire to finally get warm, inner warmth from malts and into the bitter night. Mr I discovers a very unwelcome puncture 🙁

warmer next week??

TNR 14-02-2013 Gear cable for my valentine

From TNR 14-02-13 Gear cable for my valentine

Crew :

El Pud, Eric , TJ, Butty, El Presidente , Slim

Route : Bl , Langley , across back of trentabank reservoir ,ascent of new fire road to Witch’s cottage 2, standing stone, reverse half chazza, Narnia, Hardingland, saddlers way, coal pit lane , Sutton Hall

stats:

2 punctures for El Presidente
1 bad case of chain suck for slim
1 expired gear cable outer for El Pud

Conditions: Early rain disappeared . A lot milder than of late. very muddy in bits.

Notes :
With El Pud in leader position, with Eric consultancy on hand, a novel route was guaranteed.

Ascending chazza to Narnia was interesting. 3 or 4 degrees above zero had resulted in a glacial stream, chunky with ice and snow, making MTB boots essential …but our North Wave standard issue were only just high enough to keep our socks dry.

TJ and El Presidente are so community spirited…they paused to rebuild the dry stone wall on chazza, just short of the Narnia turn-off.

Narnia was thankfully mostly free of snow and ice, and our descent to witches cottage as grin- inducing as ever.

Cloud had cleared by Narnia. Starlit happiness and a fingernail moon. A twinkling Macc in the valley below.

From TNR 14-02-13 Gear cable for my valentine

Muddy bit after WC was the muddiest I have ever seen it. Hardingland still had snow drifts near the top. Down to saddler’s way . A stop halfway up SW to sit, sample and discuss the qualities of Pernod. How very continental, and a TNR first.
Up to Teggs Nose Car Park. Then descent via the bridleway parallel to old Buxton rd. , then coal pit lane descent to Langley. The joy of puncture 2 from El Presidente 🙁

Sutton Hall for “flat cap”, Leffe and general bad behaviour which had to be reined in by our resident voice of reason, Eric the Brave.

TNR 7-2-2013 Short White Classic

Crew:  El Pres, PTD, Eric, Stunt, Mr Incredible, Slim, Butty

Pub:  Nic, Dunc, Mawds & El Pud

Route: BL, Chazza & Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit Hill, Kings Head

Conditions: Fresh snow up high, Wet lower down, mist & fog, Wet trails

Stats:

DNS       TJ (brakes), off Stunt, Mechanical  Slim (chain)

Notes:

A faffy night as those who are there are on time manage to have missed fairly important bits of kit (waterproof, light batteries, properly functioning light mountings). Borrowed & bodged whilst responding to a flurry of texts to inform of lateness, pub choice etc – the small crew promptly head off, with Slim & Butty following somewhat behind.

Hot climb in high humidity/fog as tales of après ski are recounted. The tarmac to Chazza is white with fresh powder, but wet underneath.

Refrigerated van, car and man running with massive hand torch come at us from all three directions whist we wait for the stragglers…we exchange “are they coming to bury the bodies?” glances.

Hot berry juice & brandy toddy keeps the spirits up (not bad for a last minute concoction!)

Thin layer of virgin snow up to the top of chazza gets a bit thicker, then descending into snow sided stream with broken ice – actually not that slippy (assuming you don’t try to change direction too quickly!)

Extension covered in more of a frozen frost (which is more slippy as stunt discovers!) but which suddenly stops after the last of the steps and is just wet.

Thick fog patches on and off up to nessit, group splits as Slims chain fails and then down the traditional way (interesting in a white surface with limited vis!) and straight down to the Kings Head for 8:45 to get food.

Real fire crackling in the grange we warm through with Landlord in hand, and food on order…

What pies!! Our very own Man v Food episode…for the record Men Stunt & Slim, Mice PTD & EL Pres.

Diesel the dog (our new best friend) delicately devours delectable delicacies J

B team arrive to stop drowsiness setting in (mostly!) more ski reminicences and delivery of items unsuitable for air travel!?

Fresh air welcome on the way home (as long as you weren’t near Butty) and the pies sat heavy!
