TNR 15-11-2012 Not so Shining Tor

From Not So Shining Tor

Crew: PTD, El Pud, El Pres, 3 Sheds, Coley, Slim, G, Butty, TJ, Stunt

Route: BL, New Road, Tea rooms, Shining Tor, LH side descent to Lamaload, Dead Mans Lane, Blaze hill to Jumper Lane, Oakenbank, Poachers snicket, Vale.

Conditions: Cold & Clear with Hill Fog, wet & muddy trails

Stats: G admits to an off

Notes:

Standards are slipping, shocking number of bikes filthy from last weeks riding!

From Not So Shining Tor

Route choice by committee at BL undecided but tea rooms regroup agreed.

Hill fog encountered well before walker barn, and the dampness condenses on bikes (& beards!) and sucks the heat from everything (a number of cold finger grumblings)

A night for bar mounted lights, helmet mounted down to dimmer settings in the mist.

All available food consumed at shining tor washed down with a wee nip, Butty the star with his special sweeties ravenously devoured by all except the principled oral health professional 😉

Despite the ominous gloop at the top the “new route” is only moderately more slithery than normal, but downhill speeds severely reduced by the lack of vis.

The routefinders to be congratulated in shepherding us expertly despite the conditions.

From Not So Shining Tor

Bizarrley we can see stars through the top of the mist above us at times.

Finally we escape the clutches of the night vapours and find the valley just that bit warmer and fully clear.

The slow progress means a more direct route to the pub, finally some speed!

Vale warm and welcoming, 5.7% ale and 7% cider on offer, as well as the normal bolly bolska brews.

From Not So Shining Tor

A night for serious talk about how to run the country (it clearly needs TNR expertise!) as well as the usual boll*cks about tyre choice and berating G for his wilful ignorance of important TNR messaging.

Whisky finish purely as defence against the elements on the ride home 🙂

From Not So Shining Tor

ERIQUEST NEXT WEEK – PAIRINGS NEED DECLARING FOR ANDICAPPING!!!

TNR 08-11-2012 6.28 and figure of 8

From TNR 8-11-2012 Dr S And TJ

Crew : Slim, PTD, TJ, Butty, El Presidente, Dr S, Biggus Nickus
In da pub : Dan

Route : Barracks Lane, Zig Zags, Teggs Nose from the rear, Moderately wacky descent, Reverse Nessit, traverse of the downhill track, ascent to Chazza, descent of Hardingland . the Church House

Conditions : Mild and dry . about 7 to 8 c .Disturbingly slippy on the “moderately wacky descent” off Teggs Nose

From TNR 8-11-2012 Dr S And TJ

Stats : (Eric friendly) Crew size of six became seven, no mechanicals

Notes :
For the record, and to dispell the urban myth of my continued late arrival for the TNR, I was at the fabled 28 BL for 6.28pm. Butty was my witness.

Paul had a plan and no-one dissented. Special guest was Dr S, and it was good to have TJ back in the crew….especially when your Magicshine light shows the red warning light earlier than expected. Mr www.brightbikelights.com came up trumps with a spare battery.

From TNR 8-11-2012 Dr S And TJ

it was an evening of Macc Forest circuits in a rough “figure of 8″ . An excellent plan.

It was also a case of ” you show me your 2200 lumens, and I will switch on mine”. Paul has Fluxient, TJ a different brand I cannot recall. China’s finest LEDs and LIon batteries. The Holy Lighting War has begun.

From TNR 8-11-2012 Dr S And TJ

Church house did us proud with draught Hobgoblin, Pride of Pendleton and some lager-boy placebo beverages.

Minor AOE. All Dans fault.

TNR 1-11-2012 Big Ride under a Big Moon

From TNR 01-11-2012 Big Moon

Crew: PTD, El Pud, El Pres, Eric, G, Coley, 3 Sheds, Doog, Butty, Stunt, Dan.

Pub: Slim, Nic, Dunc

Route: BL, Walker Barn, Chazza & Extension, Wildboarclough, A54, Cuthorne into 3 shires, Field/farm out, Chumby, standing stone, Nessit, between the DH course path, lower path, lower reservoir trail, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Clear, Cold, breezy later.

Stats: Punctures from G & PTD

From TNR 01-11-2012 Big Moon

Notes:

Winter gear needed, but clear skies instead of the forecasted rain meant a good night for riding under a big moon 🙂

Eric joins the throng of riders having thoughts about Halifax’s iconic full sussers (wheras El Pud is anticipating its employment potential)

From TNR 01-11-2012 Big Moon

Butty wears the wrong trousers (the ones he intended – but the colour & pattern so wrong for a cold night in the north!)

PTD shows off far eastern bar mounted 2200 lumens

Rapid pace to stay warm and achieve the big four hills planned in the route!

G clearly still has new bike syndrome and disappears into the distance, kindly getting far enough ahead to have fixed his puncture by the time we catch up part way down Charity (he actually had an inner tube in his bag!!)

Gasps as the cold air of Wildboarclough valley bottom is entered, cold beginning to seep into toes.

Frost just beginning on the ground at 3 shires, and Coley’s reliable single malt hip flask rescues us from PPP (p*ss poor planning) on the mid ride tipple front 🙂

Slippy in the field to the gate where Dan finally catches up.

Star gazing we see Jupiter close to the Moon (the other bright stars were stars in Taurus and Orion apparently)

Onwards, ever onwards through Chumby, a few haribo to stave off tiring legs before standing stone, the S bends and then a final thrash down the forest and to the warmth of Sutton Hall.

Lord Lucan or Flowers (leffe for the bad boys), “clown” fashion the new black? as new bright garments are revealed as Jackets are removed! Mustard reinforcements needed, Dan entertains, poor brandy choice, good whisky choice and a bonus voucher = a fine finish to the evening.

All available clothing needed for ride home! (and an unwelcome flat rear the day after)

TNR 25-10-2012 Top Gear Challenge

From TNR 25-10-2012 Top Gear Challenge

Crew: El Pud, Kersh, Butty, Eric, 3sheds, Slim

Weather . A lot cooler, wind chill high on the tops. Thankfully it was dry

Route : Barracks Lane, Langley, Leathers Smithy. Top Gear Challenge to the stile on the approach to Shutlingsloe.
New section to the right of Shutlingsloe. Quad bike track ends up at Greenaway bridge. A54. Rose and crown . Muddy river crossing. Wildboarclough. past close crag inn. Climb to s stone. Boardwalk descent.

From TNR 25-10-2012 Top Gear Challenge

Notes:
Autumn leafiness, trees, dryness, moonlight.

Diverse routes to the stile. Eric, Slim and Butty road to standing stone. then Eric and Slim do back of the moon in reverse. Too muddy. Kersh, El Pud and 3sheds take more direct climbing routes and triumph.

New section to the right of Shutlingsloe is fun and very rideable.

From TNR 25-10-2012 Top Gear Challenge

By 9pm its clear and moonlit.

Sutton hall is a good choice for Leffe and lord Lucan. But not for desires of AOE. We are home by midnight.

TNR 18-09-2012 Route Finding Mojo

From TNR 18-09-2012 Route leadership returns

Crew : Eric, Slim, El Pud, 3sheds, Dan, Kersh
In da pub : Mawds, big Nic (on pugsley )

Route : Rainbow bridge, path to Clarke Lane/ Oak Lane, up to the Bull at Kerridge , behind site of the former Redway Tavern, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, The Brickworks, Brink farm,..Gritsone to Bowstones ,Lyme park..out by the west gate ….Styperson woods inc new cheeky Snicket (hedge)…

Conditions : mild low down, blowy, occasionally wet and very muddy on the gritstone trail .

From TNR 18-09-2012 Route leadership returns

Stats : one new carbon full suss 29er for Kersh, two offs (El Pud and Slim) in Lyme Park

Notes :
What a difference a week makes…..from 10plus and route leadership failure on the Edge last week. We start with ( very Eric-friendly crew size of ) five and our fully functioning , firing on all cylinders, cooking on gas route-mojo has been located. El Pud is reborn as subtle, but fun sized, alterations are added to familiar territory.
Kersh arrives on bling Scott carbon..allegedly first in the country …and has to depart home “for adjustments” by Clarke Lane.
A cheeky field is added in as we skirt the back of the Redway Tavern site and drop into IV.
Properly functioning gears and the lightness of the Merlin help Slim clean the Poachers Snicket without a dab.

From TNR 18-09-2012 Route leadership returns

We are reunited with Kersh by PS, and Dan joins us as we shelter from a shower on the highest point of the Gritsone.
The descent into LP is fun, as long as you avoid the holes in the drainage pipes. Our Leader then takes us on a quick tour of LP , but firm paths and a layer of greasy mud catch him and Slim out. Ouch , where are your elbow pads when you need them :-(.

But the siren calls of Moravka and Bollington Light can now be heard. One last new cheeky bit (the Hedge Snicket) is added by our Captain as we drop through Styperson woods …drawn by thoughts of a snug and welcoming Vale.
Biggus Nickus turns up , replete with Pugsley, as we descend Sugar Lane.
Mawds gets a rendition of “Happy Birthday”
No real Axis of E this week, but perhaps just a Glimmer …

TNR 11-10-2012 Losing our Way?

From TNR 11-10-2012 Losing Our Way

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, 3 Sheds, G, Eric, Butty, TJ, Stunt, Alex 2

Pub: Nic, EL Pud

Route: BL, Tythy Riverside carpark, Bollin Valley, Prezza, Chelford Lane, Snicket to Pete’s Snicket, Artists lane, lost ditherings, Mottram road, Swiss Hill, Edge traverse, Bradford lane, Hocker Lane, Prezza, Legh Arms.

From TNR 11-10-2012 Losing Our Way

Conditions: windy mild, Torrential rain from 8, muddy then floody

Stats: None of note

Notes:

Dire weather predictions + dark nights = time to strike North West for leafstrewn tracks under the trees with a highly civilised finish.

Alex 2 taggs along in camo top to test us out vs the Nancies (epic fail!?)

this week TJ is mostly testing the gently green magicshine twin headlamp helmet mounted unit

From TNR 11-10-2012 Losing Our Way

All is well until that “so precisely where is the descent?” moment, trial and error(s) finally lead most of us down a familiar trail as the heavens open!(but we lost Eric & G along the way – or maybe that was the otherway around?)

Traverse track a trifle tricky to pick out as the freshly fallen leaves cover evenly muddy ground.

A cheeky bradford/hocker before the warmth and dryness of the Legh Arms, reuniting with G

Unicorn and 1892 (aka Hatters Mild) or Veltins, good service, unfeasbily large burgers and “Meet the Kershaws part deux”

Cashlow condition is genetic! 🙂 late drinking to no avail as it’s still hammering down for the wettest ride home on roads simply awash with water!

Did El Pres & PTD wimp out with El Pud lift capability???

Full man points for the Poynts

TNR 4-10-2012 Darkride with Randy

From TNR 04-10-12 New Hip In The Goyt

Crew: PTD, El Pud, El Pres, TJ, Coley, 3 Sheds, G, Stunt, Eric + late crossers Slim & Butty

Pub: Mountain Rescue Adrian (aka the skiing assassin)

Route: BL, New Road(optional Cheeky Chazza) ,Tea Rooms, “Straight on” descent, left singletrack to Errwood Hall, Up the singletrack to Pym Chair, Jenkin Chapel, Smith Lane, Rainow, Oakenbank lane, Vale

Conditions: Mild but breezy and wet later, trails pretty dry mixed with rather wet & muddy.

Stats: another stat free night

From TNR 04-10-12 New Hip In The Goyt

Notes:

An unusually prompt start from BL (not waiting for the usual suspects?)

Lights on from the start as the nights draw in, how soon the seasons change.

TJ sports a new 2200 Lumen twin spot test rig! 🙂

G & Stunt do a cheeky chazza but are left to play catch up along the tops as the main bunch have a no waiting policy this week.

From TNR 04-10-12 New Hip In The Goyt

Main descent in good condition (why don’t we do it more often?), singletrack very wet and slippery with many a “dab”.

G manages to find his gully nemesis with unerring accuracy but does at least stop in time 🙂

Much pushing up the outward track into the midst of a Mountain Rescue Exercise (including TJ’s ski buddy Adrian).

El Pud’s mojo must be returning as rapidly as his recovery! We are treated to Hot Randy at Jenkin Chapel (tasted much better than it smelt), examined the sorry tale of John Fletcher on the stone up dead man’s hill, met up with the B ride crossers, and added in an optional Oakenbank as the nights progress has been exceptionally swift for a large group.

Vale is deserted (v unusual) which brings waitress service 🙂 :-), is it me or have portions improved to match biker appetites? Moravka slips down nicely and wifi provides red bull funded adrenaline rush clips! Open season on lighting geekery and rumours of fresh steeds.

Wet ride home.

TNR 27-9-2012 49er Autumn Classic

From TNR 27-09-2012 49er Classic

Crew: El Pres, PTD, El Pud, Slim, 3 Sheds, Butty, Stunt, Doog, Coley

B Riders: Nic, Dunc

Pub: Croxy, Rob Griffin, Kersh, Bernard

Route: BL, Cat, Danebower hollow, Cumberland clough/brook, Standing stone, Nessit, path between the DH course, lower path, Church House.

From TNR 27-09-2012 49er Classic

Conditions: Dry sky, wet trails, mild to start, cold later

Stats: Doog has dodgy lights

Notes:

A dry weather slot in an otherwise soaking wet week

El Pud’s second recovery ride (of many we hope)

Warmer than it looks means many a layer is shed up to the cat (then hurriedly put back on!)

Proper riding on wet trails in the dark (takes a bit of getting used to for those recently returned from Sierra cycling)

An orthopedically friendly road decent option is taken by more riders than expected as the real riders take on a very wet and rocky Chumby (the ford not as deep as you might expect)

A wee snifter or two for the Slim 49er at Nessit (what no pies!) before rapid decent to the Church House for Organ Morgan, Wibbly Wallaby and a de crocked Crox on crutches.

From TNR 27-09-2012 49er Classic

Founder members night with the infamous Robert Griffin making a very rare appearance whilst this side of the pond.

Much catching up after the long summer breaks, and its very late very soon as a Maxis of Evil seems to be the default position in our spiritual home.

Let the autumn season commence!

TNR 20-9-2012 El Pud Re-fettled

Crew : Slim, Eric, El Pud, El Presidente…

Doing his own thang : Kersh

Route : Rainbow Bridge, Oak Lane, Redway Tavern route under White Nancy, Ingersley Vale, Oakenbank Lane, Rainow, Bull Hill Lane , Cliff Lane, Back Eddisbury Rd, Buxton Old Rd, Reverse Zig Zags, Whitney croft , Higher Fence Rd, Hulley Rd, Middlewood Way..The Vale

Stats : four crew with mobile phone comms, one satellite team member without…

Conditions : cloudy, cool-ish but only a hint of rain..

Notes :
Confession time…Kersh did try and organise the TNR via the forum…but I did not chip in until late on Thursday pm by which time he was in a mobile phone blackout zone :-)..
Nevertheless the TNR tradition was continued …and founder members of the “south eastern TNR massive” were eager to quaff in the Northern Territory of deepest Bollingtonia.

Seven weeks to the day, El Pud was back on bike following the bionic rebuilding of the worn out bits. I was glad to have El Presidente along too so that I was not outnumbered by the rebuilt hip chaps…BTW ( PTD please note) he was riding the crosser !

Eric (aka now as “the fiddler”) was on a test ride of Kate’s “London bike” …very retro, and economically single speeded too. God bless Bikes of Park Lane.

The Vale was as hospitable as ever. Moravka seems to be the default tipple of choice.

Mr K was also out…route unknown. The Poachers and the Lord Clyde were involved…

Slim.
