TNR 24-01-2013 Perfect Pistes

From TNR 24-01-2013 Do You Get My Drift ?

The excuses came thicker and faster than a blizzard, attitudes to risk sliding into wimpy wussland after bruising encounters with ice …Tales of legendary piste from Monday night convert a few of the wavers who MTFU and they join the elite band of winter sport enthusiasts at BL.

Full moon, no wind, and a pleasantly secure surface on the landrover tracks up “tarmac chazza”.

There we find the snow as fresh as the day it fell, just enough to give big drifts for soft landing whilst leaving a clear line, just compacted enough for grip, just deep enough for plenty of fun.

Mandatory snowdrift bike rack photos, massive smiles on the descent (virtually ice free) and a growing realisation that this is the best most rideable snow conditions ever!

Other riders report brilliant trails, G desperate for some virgin snow too – we compromise and go with an assumed Kershaw folly – only to find it’s true and amazing! We decide to do Narnia too and thanks to more landy tracks make excellent time cross forest, grind up to standing stone, then tip toe across icy road into forest chapel.

Almost rideable all the way to Narnia entrance – living up to it’s name in the winter wonderland.

More top tracks to the benches for a last taste of summer whisky. Time check at Witches cottage 9:20 means splitting into A & B teams for a thrash down Hardingland (immense!) and then down to Sutton Hall for 9:45 with empty legs….nothing broke…only offs were G’s gratuitous drift plants…

Burgers all round, Winter warmer or Lord Lucan and post ride buzz :-).. final malts before heading home knowing we have had the best of it before it goes…
