TNR 5-11-2015 Gridlock on Guy Fawkes Night

TNR 5-11-2015 Gridlock on Guy Fawkes

Words by Eric, Pics by Slim

Crew;
A Team; PtD, El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Butty, Eric.
B Team; Dunc
Pub; El Pud

Route; RB, Endon Hall, Lidgetts, Kerridge Ridge, Poachers Snickett, Pott Shrigley, Blakestonedale, Dale Top, Moorside Lane, Birchencliffe, Norman’s Hall, Church House Bolly.

Conditions; A real soggy night forecast, but apart from one excuse for a shower we stayed dry from the top. Bottom upwards was a different matter.

Stats; None, see below

Offs; No admissions.

Another small posse – this time assembled under Slim’s leadership. His two What’s App posts are reproduced here in full.

Wed 4th Nov at 23.00 – Planning on escaping Warrington, 6.45 at RB is always good
Thurs 5th Nov at 18.36 – 6.45 RB ??? I am at BL 6.30 on the dot.

Enough said, the group may have been bigger had everyone been able to find the start.

Everyone was wrapped in waterproofs in anticipation of the expected deluge but layers were soon shed as the rain held off and the balmy temperatures stayed. Bonfire night; so the plan was to head for a suitable vantage point to enjoy a free show. After the debacle of leading a small group to Lidgetts to see a Vulcan in the far distance during the summer your scribe was keeping a low profile when locations were chosen this time; but Lidgetts it was. We had only gone 10 yards when El Pres had a little sneaky fall off on the AZ smokers track.

On arriving at Lidgetts we found that in addition to the usual meeting of the Adlington Herb Appreciation Club there were about another million cars parked up – surreal. As we reached the top the Tytherington Club display kicked off – perfect timing. Cycling gear is not however the best for standing around on November evenings and it was soon time to set off again but progression was halted by a traffic jam, I kid you not, which looked quite permanent. Two long queues had formed faced off against each other with no way to squeeze past owing to the line of cars parked up watching the fireworks, who couldn’t move due to the two lines of cars faced off against each other who had no way to squeeze ……. As we ported our bikes along the bank it looked like it was about to turn ugly.

TNR 5-11-2015 Gridlock on Guy Fawkes

Kerridge has its own lexicon of superlatives to describe it’s slipperiness but Slim coined “as slippy as a greased tiger” Call it what you will, everyone had fun. Now no-one admitted to any indiscretions along the ridge but 3 Shed’s trouysers told a somewhat different story. When questioned about the “travel staining” up the rear right buttock he claimed to have been “trying to catch my battery!”

TNR 5-11-2015

We met up with Butty just after the exit from the Poachers snicket, and with him it’s getting to be a bit – another Thursday, another new bike, this time a Salsa Cross machine. Armed with his skinny tyres and drop bars he lead the way up to Blakestonedale. No cleaners on the climb tonight. On towards Dale Top and we almost had a two wheeled repeat of the Lidgetts incident with a line of TNR’s meeting a line of Nancy’s on the single track. Despite a bit of Top Gun style who’s going to bottle first, no one dropped any batteries. The summit offered views of the northerly fireworks with lots of flashes and booms still going on. In the words of Mr I – “Looks like the 5th Essex are copping for it again tonight sir”

Sadly 3 Sheds seemed to have copped for a recalcitrant dollop of something canine on his machine aswell and spent the rest of the night muttering about dog owners and looking for a puddle.
Down the smooth descent and back along Moorside Lane before a final blast down Birchencliffe and to the welcome of the Church House in Bollington. And very welcoming it was to; having pre ordered food the arrival of the steaming plates seemed to make eyes light up!!

El Pud arrived with tales of being given the chance to seek further development opportunities outside the Speke area, what with that and the thought of those poor b…..rs in the 5th Essex still out there in the mud and the fireworks……!

Crew;
A Team; Stunt, Doog, Eric.
B Team; Slim
Pub; Dunc

Route; BL, NBR, Charity and extension, Cat, Danebower, Cumberland Brook, Wildboarclough, Standing Stone, Nessit, central descent, Bob’s bench, Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Amazing window in the weather, raining all day, clear 5pm – midnight, then more rain!

Stats; None of note

Offs; None.

Must be half term or everyone’s working too hard or something but we were just three at BL by 6.40. It was good to see Doog back in action after a layoff, and declaring that he is now free of Thursday childcare duties and looking forward to regular participation!

We were blessed with a few hours window of good weather and so the decision to go high was not a difficult one. As we set off up Old Buxton Road in pursuit of a hard charging Doog, we reckoned he’d spent the last 18 months on a turbo trainer rather than behind a perambulator.

The good thing about a small group is that progress is swift and with little fuss; the bad thing is that it doesn’t give too much exciting to write about. Up Charity Lane, a bit hot, down Charity Lane, a bit wet, along the extension, a bit sketchy, up to the Cat, a bit climby – get the drift.

……along Danebower; then whoa, excitement by the bucket load, a new gate! Not just any gate but a big gate with a little gate inside it, and it opens, on hinges that work, and it closes again, almost by itself.

TNR 29-10-2015 Stargate

In a mixture of sublime and ridiculous we spent a good few minutes firstly admiring the gate and then trying out Eric’s new stargazing app. Once through the “Stargate” (sorry) we were soon speeding down the Danebower descent; cosmic disaster was narrowly averted when Eric started a warp speed passing manoeuvre just as Stunt spotted the biggest black hole you ever did see. The escape zone had a rock the size of a small planet bang on the “swerve for your life” line; our two space cowboys passing either side and arriving safely back down to earth at the A54.

The rest of the route went pretty much like the first bit – smooth, in a rocky bumpy way. Over Cumberland Brook where the farm at the bottom seemed to have been taken over by baying hounds, probably practicing for Halloween, up to Standing Stone, round Nessit and down the central descent.
The thick carpet of autumn leaves made the track ahead look silky smooth and I guess we were lucky that no one fell foul of the enemy beneath.

On arrival at Sutton Hall we were greeted by Slim, sitting in the window cuddling an empty Leffe glass.
Only he and the barman will know what number that one was. Despite the classic route we got round quite quickly and were soon refreshing ourselves. The early start meant that we were just about fully refreshed when Dunc arrived – but in the true spirit of the 3 Orangeers, you can’t leave a mate to drink alone can you?

Route : Rainbow Bridge – Endon Hall Track – Western Ascent to the Saddle of Kerridge – White Nancy – Bridleway halfway – Saddle of K again – Trig Point and Down – Cow Lane to Rainow – Oaken bank Lane – Reverse ascent of Beeston Brow – Styperson Woods – The Church House (Bolly)
Crew : Butty, PTD, Dunc, El Pres, Slim
Conditions : Clear and dry 10c dropping to 5.4c on my return to Tythy
Stats : 12 miles, 1700 ft of ascent

TNR 22-10-2015 Swetting the Asset

Notes:
My learning point for the evening was…to keep up with the Whatsapp alerts. I turned up (late , as usual) at BL only to find that the muster point had been moved to RB at 6.45 . And I had requested thatchange of rendezvous point in the first place !!

Untitled

A “keep it local and sweat the asset” approach to our Thursday Night Ride …..The asset in this case being our Kerridge Ridge.

We had diverse ascents and descents, starting with the ride/carry/push “Western ascent to the Saddle” which we did last week (on the suggestion of El Pres). The ride from the saddle to White Nancy is a real gem at this time of night, be it dark or light.

TNR 22-10-2015 Swetting the Asset

The descent off the white nancy side is best described as “for the experienced only” …

El Pres is now regularly acquiring “war wounds” …last week it was the presidential thumb , this week his chin was lacerated in the attempt at exiting Styperson woods via an overgrown footpath. Its all my fault.

The Church House Langley was a different choice but definitely the right answer – fantastic service, bargain price for the beer (Hobgoblin Gold !) , and enormous portions of pie .

Crew : El Pres, Slim, Phil B, Butty & Kersh

Pub & catering logistics maestro : Dunc

Weather – Mild, dry and then cool wind on the tops.

Route: Rainbow Bridge – Endon Hall Lane – western traverse to Kerridge summit – eastern descent to Rainow – jumper lane – blaze hill – Smith Lane – the Cheshire Corkscrew – Pymms chair ascent from Jenkin Chapel – Windgather /Taxal Edge – Kettleshulme – Bakestonedale Rd – Pott Shrigley – The Poachers

Notes:

Dark almost from the start of the ride now.

We were treated to a Presidential Special, and a route heading North from a Tythy friendly muster point as well. And it was topped off with a Bollington finish. Hope that does not yet appear in the Urban Dictionary;-) Spoiling us he was, well apart from the small matter of 2700ft of climb.

It was an unusual route with some well known bits….and other bits not visited for a long while. All credit should be given to El Pres for taking on route leadership, stopping any Kersh mutiny and providing a proper Thursday Night Ride.

I feel a need to impart some “thank you” –

El Pres for the route choice

Dunc – for ordering me food at the Pochers

and Phil B – keeping me company at the back …and educating me on the history of the Cheshire Corkscrew…and its part in the London Edinburgh Classic Trial

TNR 08-10-2015 Sorry Gee

Words by Eric, Pics by Pete
Crew;
A Team; El Pres, PtD, Dunc, Slim, Coley, Butty, Eric.
B Team; Gee

Route; BL, OBR, Zag, Charity, Standing Stone, Slabs, 2 sided valley, Wildboarclough green lane, Standing Stone, Nessit, LHS downhill, central ascent, descent to Greenbarn, slippy st, Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Still shorts – nothing more needs saying !

TNR 08-10-2015 Sorry Gee

Stats; None declared

Offs; Slim – 2 sided valley, Eric – LHS downhill.

Never start with an apology but very many apologies to Gee. It was a bit like in Lord of the Flies when a group of nice folks get together and en mass do bad things. So it was suggested to the late arriving Gee that if he were to go to the Cat we’d see him there. That bit sounded OK. The group then flapped about leaderless and at Teggs a huge debate ensued about going down one last time before climbing to meet Gee. The discussion lasted so long that we had no time to get to the Cat and the plan changed so many times that we set off for the 2 sided valley. That bit sounded OK to the impatient mob. Gee will catch us at the bottom of Cumberland Brook. That bit didn’t sound OK to Gee ! – sorry.

So the team assembled with bikes ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous – Butty on his new super lightweight full suspension racer and Dunc with solid everything. We set of with every intention of a rendezvous with Gee but “Team Shambles” fell apart within the first mile or so whilst consideration was given to spin down from Tegg’s –“seeing as we are here now, it would be a shame not to”. There are times when Mr T’s follow me leadership style is sadly missed, so much for all this MBA consultative nonsense.

TNR 08-10-2015 Sorry Gee

After all that we decided against a Teggs descent and headed to Charity (was the light in the distance Gee?) before a sneaky bit of singletrack and the climb up the slabs and into the two sided valley. Despite PTD’s advice Slim managed to plunge into the depths of the valley sustaining nothing more than a few grazes which doesn’t trump Eric’s double fracture the last time through. Onwards along the green lane which is truly a forgotten gem in our world. The climb back to Standing Stone will never ever be a gem by any stretch of the imagination. Back up towards the summit of Nessit, you can see the pub from here – but there is more to be done tonight men! So whilst some took the route grande direct to the beer others braved the LHS of the downhill. Slipperier than well ….. ? Big respect to Dunc who charged down on his suspensionless bike like a pro downhiller, and sniggers to Eric who fell off again on this section but in a different place to last time – I guess that’s progress.

We climbed back up the central forest track to catch the final descent towards the reservoir and a last bit of slippy sneaky.

Back at Sutton Hall we counted our chaps in – no Gee, oops.
The conversation turned to Christmas festivities, but we’re still wearing shorts! and the usual nonsense banter. An after the bell round or two courtesy of our Italian connection ensured an appropriately late departure.

TNR 08-10-2015 Sorry Gee

TNR 1-10-2015 Fast n Dry

Crew: Butty,El Pres, Mr I, 3 Sheds, G, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Hurdsfield Road, Lidgetts Lane, Lower Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank lane, Pott Shrigley, Bakenstone dale road, Layby ascent to the stile, quarries descent, chapel descent, Styperson pool, Vale

Conditions: Clear, mild, very dry trails

Notes:

Indian summer continues, hazy orange and red skies (“Pollution is beautiful isn’t it” quips Butty), and a gathering of the crew at the lidgetts lane gate onto kerridge…well gate is now an optimistic term for a pile of wood no longer attached to any hinges or top rail! one for Pete’s series of Knackered gates of the norther shires 😉

..or it would have been if he wasn’t off to the emerald isle for a meet up with Luc.

Superdry (no not the brand of Japanse clothing that is so popular with fashion conscious folk) – but the state of the trails – even the muddy snicket across to the rainow road was dusty dry!!

More photo opportunities of white nancy being black against the instachrome light on the start of Oakenbank, then lights on & whizz down!

Soon we are at the layby and the start of the climb is still wet (some things you can rely on), but the grass therafter is grippy. A couple of lights higher up turn out to be some lads who need our knowledge on where they are and how to get back on course 🙂

Tonights route is designed to get some good decents in , and get to the vale early enough for food. So no wandering across the tops to bowstones. Instead straight over the stile, down the rocky descent, and then across to the chapel – perfect conditions 🙂

Time for some hooning in the woods – some nice tight berms! some casual nettle rash 🙁 and on to the pub.

8:40 suprises us all – coz its not been that short a ride (those dry trails run fast it seems)

Pub is empty!! they are pleased to see us (unsuprisingly), and the Light Nancy is ace. A few folk appear to be StopTobering – Butty properly, G (apart from Thursdays!!).

Dunc arrives and gives insights into the “El Pud is working in my office” experience that has begun this week!

Debriefs on bivvying with Nick, Kersh as theatre critic, idiot proof lead/follow drones, Octoberfest & advance notice of an urban bivvy for Leek in November to sample the new beer shoppy.

Cold post pub!

Route: BL, Old Road, Teggs, Resevoirs, Nessit Hill, Shutlingsloe, Back of the moon, Standing Stone, RHS descent, Fire roads, ususal track & around resevoirs, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Still, Mild, Boggy on the tops, Cool later

TNR 17 September 2015 - El Pres Photos - 4 of 21

Notes:

A “mini victory” evening where the weather improves nicely for the evening 🙂

Much Oooing and Aaahing over Butty’s new Germanic Metal – raw aluminium finish (who needs paint!), odd but effective 27.5/26 wheel sizes, C*ck chopper rear shock linkage/action!?, tools built into the maxle, clever cable grippers and routing….soo much geekery!

PTD has returneth and cracks the whip – up to Teggs with some summitting in mind for later.

Layers shed as clear skies later doesn’t yet mean its cool enough to climb in more than a long sleeved jersey.

TNR 17 September 2015 - El Pres Photos - 6 of 21

Dry and grippy on your choice of left or right tracks, new parking markings on the road to the forest.

Quiet and echo’ey on the long drag to Nessit, great views in the fading red light, our own lights on for the next climb to shutlingsloe.

Bats buzzing for insects over head, bikes left at the base of the “mountain”, Lemonchello and cake a the top 🙂

TNR 17 September 2015 - El Pres Photos - 15 of 21

A couple of MTB lights head across pigford moor to the two sided valley below.

Back of the moon – gets Butty’s new bike properly muddied in, damp dewey grass on the descent. RHS in great condition, fire roads also eerily quiet and greening nicely, final thrash delivers sidewall leakage for dunc.

Also quiet in Sutton Hall, excellent choice of beers, food and service – serving staff almost trip over PTD’s back stretching on all fours!

TNR 17 September 2015 - El Pres Photos - 12 of 21

All that climbing makes for hungry bikers, bad case of puddings (or even cheese for two – for one!), forest gin, neat with ice and lime…Hmmm nice.

Cool ride home.

B Team; Dunc, Big Nick

Route; BL, Zig Zags, Salters, Hardingland, Witches Cottage, Narnia, Charity, Dentist’s descent, diagonal ally, boardwalk, Standing Stone, RHS, LHS, Bob’s, Leathers, extra loop around the reservoir with variations, Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Warm, muggy and midgey, and dark later !

Stats; None declared

Offs; Non declared, although a number were suspected on Dentist’s?
Laid back “summer recess” logistics saw an Eric friendly size peloton assemble with Slim claiming to be first to arrive; yes that laid back.
With the Poynton posse on route down the Middlewood way the Macc Lads set off for Teggs and a rendezvous at the Witches cottage. The descent of Salters Way was still bone dry so it was another brakes off, knees out charge to the bottom. Enjoy it while you can gentleman for it will soon become as slippery and slimy as a bank executive in a documentary.

TNR 10-09-2015

The ascent of Hardingland was next with the loose, dry and dusty surface testing legs, lungs and technique to the limit. But for a dab at the beginning El Pres would have been king, but a dab is a dab wherever the foot touches, and sadly he was plunged from first to last! We arrived at the Witches Cottage to find…… nothing……no Poynton boys and no witch. Then we heard noises from afar, then a rustling in the trees, then expletives and then the dynamic duo appeared from Narnia, slightly shaken from a high speed discovery that the track had been substantially washed away. I hope that bikers won’t be accused of eroding this trail, God can do in a night what they have been accused of doing for years.

It’s that time of year when we’ve got lights on but still got shorts on. Most people were exhibiting some sort of new season lighting bling, from bar extensions, and Mayhem lightweight bargains to TJ’s red rear light as bright as something atop an NYPD cruiser. Back to Charity and then on to a rare return to the Dentist’s descent which has lain fallow for some time – not sure why. There was a lot of whoopin’ an gigglin’ on the way down, a surefire sign that the skill level didn’t match the terrain but the fun is what matters.

TNR 10-09-2015

There was more walking on the diagonal back to the boardwalks up to Standing Stone. The RHS was just perfect with the roots dry enough for a bit of commitment. The humidity had brought out the midges for what hopefully was their last supper of the season so the forest was no place for hanging about – but we’d made good time with zero faffing so it was all down to one last loop around the reservoir. The track down the side of the road has been built to keep walkers safe from the cars – sod the cyclists then. We finished with a climb back to the exit of Nessit and an option on the way back to the Leathers.

All agreed that the impromptu route was a welcome variation on a theme even though some walking was required.

Route: BL, Full zig zags, Walker barn, Charity lane, extension, Standing stone, up Shutlingsloe slabs, back of the moon, Half pipe fire road, lower path, resevoirs, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Dry & mild, big puddles in places & boggy over the moor.

TNR 03-09-2015 50 and Stag TNR

Notes:

Dual celebration night tempts out some irregulars despite the odd drop of rain at the start 😉

Tyre controvesy as PTD claims 2.5″ front tyre that looks nothing more than 2.25!

Slim on time shocker!! Butty still waiting for his Liteville…single speeding until then.

Route designed around celebration stops – decent pace set. Opting for a first stop at the top of Charity for a change (better views, less midges!?) its generous portions of Gin with tonic & lemon. We almost offer some to the lad on his first ride with his mates – who have kindly not bothered to supply him with a helmet, or gloves, or commented on his heavy bike with V brakes! (reminicent of an early phil ball in footy shorts and trainers too)

Lemon drizzle cake to match (natch) Happy 50th Coley!!

TNR 03-09-2015 50 and Stag TNR

Communication with Lee who is trying to catch us up – passing rider tells us he is just a couple of minutes behind, but then we may have confused him with our route jargon!? And route change is initiated by PTD also.

Lights on & extra relaxed down chazza & extension – but happily no incidents (or evidence of mangled novice riders!)

Up to the back of the moon the long way round (confusing Stunt who went the short way!)

PTD magic is carefully poured  in layers to deliver 9 glasses of squashed frog – but mini trifles might be a more apt description. Louging on soft bilberry beds we are like a group of silverbacks enjoying the fruits of the forest (well Mr I is..adding bilberries to his). Plenty of hilarity at how un “northern” this all is, as we look out at the dying red glow of the day across the dark plains and twinkling lights.

Double frogs on top of gin is starting to make bike control on wet grass between trees quite exciting!

TNR 03-09-2015 50 and Stag TNR

A lone rider is collected – which turns out to be 3 Sheds.

Machinery and big piles of gravel at the entrance to half pipe, and we all notice another ruined building that we have never seen before (too much frog juice – surely something must have been cut down to reveal it!!?)

Slightly weird to roll a fast gravel road rather than the ususal snow fields on this run, Butty finds traitorous vegetation hides a big hole for the unwary on the ride around by the gate.

Plenty of chase your mate on the tracks down to the smithy, where we find G en Porche and reroute him to Sutton Hall.

We never did find Lee (sorry mate)

Worrying fishy smell in the pub (luckily not us!) but fine Boltmaker & Kerala, fine service, and plenty of hilarity.

El Pud pops in shocker

TNR 03-09-2015 50 and Stag TNR

Lack of flexibility on last orders not so- especially as we were going to try the Macclesfield Forest Gin! (but maybe a good thing for our livers….and Slims instructions to pace himself!!)

Hint of autumal coolness in the air riding home.

A small-ish , elite team to celebrate TJ’s imminent birthday.

It was a 3 plus 1 affair as Slim’s start was delayed once again by his need to earn a living in Warrington.

TNR 27-08-2015 Ice T-J - 7 of 8

Mr I seems to have a renewed vigour about him…he had a significant lead over Butty the batty as they climbed the Kerridge bridle way to rendezvous with Pete.
But maybe it was the “cake payload” that our butty was carrying ?

At the apex of Oakenbank we found the ideal spot for the toast. TJ then produced a 5star tipple to celebrate another year of progressing towards the bus pass. A fine Glenlivet, replete with a flask of ice cubes.
Butty valiantly attempted to light the novelty musical candles but only proceeded to burn his finger on the match 🙂 as it was just a bit too blowy.

As the sky turned orange over winter hill, and a hint of Autumn could be sensed in the air, the refreshing dram gilded our descent to the Poachers.
