words by Stunt , pics by Butty

Crew: El Pres, TJ, Butty, Stunt

Extended Commute: Joe

Pub: Dunc & Slim

Route: BL, old road, full zig zags, walker barn, charity lane & extension, bottom of the oven, tea rooms, goyt grassy descent, pyms chair, dead mans hill, blaze hill, poachers.

Conditions: Warm, Occasional light drizzle.

IMG_1081

Notes:

Small crew after a big weekends riding, Butty on rigid singlespeed as his last “not broken” bike!

TJ fancies the Goyt and El Pres determines that we get there avoiding the Buzz Kill that is New road in the summer.

Joe joins us to the bottom of chazza.

Gaining height up the old road and into the Zig – ominous clouds are creeping across the plain, although the hills have the white and fluffy  variety.

Hovering Kestrel on the Zag bridleway, Butty in Photographer mode, and always at the front, maybe we should make Pete ride singlespeed so he gets some shots from the front too? 🙂

Long grasses, thistles, yellow and blue flowers wave in the breeze on the banks of the lane up to Chazza, by which time spits and spots are starting to fall. Not greasy down chazza, but extension steps have been washed out (last Fridays torrents??)

The drizzle isn’t heavy enough to warrant waterproofs, but is enough to create rainbow directly ahead of us on the road up from the Stanley Arms, perfect half circle starting in the field next to the road and finishing on the other side.

Rain soon passes (taking the rainbow with it). Find some sheep chatting to a horse across the fence on the top path, plus big rabbits.

IMG_1098

Goyt descent in excellent condition, and even though grassy the rain doesn’t seem to have made it skiddy. Butty leads us on some singletrack between high bracken and we get a new route (and legs thrashed by vegetation!)

TJ waxes lyrical about sailing on the upper reservoir, and the light fades on the long climb out, accompanied by loud clicky creaks from TJ’s rear end – which Butty helpfully suggests is probably a broken rear axle! (it survives to the pub)

A lot of solitary riding – more wildlife spotting, Massive white owl on the hunt, and a Sparrohawk whizzing low along the countours looking to flush out something for supper.

Another shower made the descent to Jenkins chapel slightly tentative, but dry again on the other side. Lights on but no time for oakenbank lane, straight down to the poachers for a perfectly timed rendevouz with Dunc and Pete who have been furtling on Kerridge.

IMG_1099

The pub mostly exclusively occupied by mountain bikers, Peroni, American IPA, before the usual slide into Belgian-ness with Dunc going for Duval and Pete & Butty on Leffe. Port finish just to be different for some. We were slightly weary tonight, and sluggish to leave, which for those riding further home would lead to being quite wet!

Words by Alex, Pics by Slim

Crew: PTD, Butty, Dunc, El Pres, Slim, Coley, Stunt

Pub: G, Mr & Mrs I

Route:    BL, Zigs, Teggs, Smithy, Chazza, Nessit, Smithy

Conditions: Spits & spots of rain, windy, humid, slighly damp trails

Notes:

Doomladen weather predictions turn out to be overly pessimistic! But to brave the rain or don the waterproof? dilemma of the night!

PTD back from lakes & mountains with news that Emma is the latest casualty – cracked ribs and broken hand!!!

(but was the bike ok??)

Slighly slack route chosen in case the weather properly arrives

TNR 13-8-2015 Murky and Sloe - 2 of 4

Long faff at the end of the Zig

Teggs very dry but with slick rock in places, much overuse of brakes.

Still damp but not properly wet post ordering food, but gloom gathers as we top Chazza.

Damp & dim means focussed descending, lights on to enter narnia as near darkness under the trees.

TNR 13-8-2015 Murky and Sloe - 3 of 4

Butty delivers Sloe Gin and Sausage Rolls (Mustard by Pete) for celebrating of his Birthday 🙂

Plenty of skidding and near misses (or maybe that was just Stunt!) on the way down.

New territory as our ususal table taken (But those in the know defer to Gittins Seniors!)

Rockhopper perfect for a summers evening thirst quencher, meatballs perfect for double entendres!

TNR 13-8-2015 Murky and Sloe - 4 of 4

G makes a brief appearence to show snoodle puppy pictures, and the Incredibles appear late but with very welcome news – excuse for raising a glass to Mr I’s continued health! 🙂

Weekend logistics discussed and odds taken on rider most likely to have faulty bike (grease those maxles folks!)

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Mr I, Stunt, Josh

Pub: Coley

Route: BL, Rainbow Bridge, Under White Nancy, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Moorside Lane, Chapel descent, Lyme Park W gate, Knob, Lyme Park E Gate, Justins Passage, Mudhurst Lane, Bowstones, Sponds, Diagonal descent to layby, Pott Shrigley, Poachers

Conditions: Sunny, Warm, mostly dry trails, high vegetation!

Notes:

Last minute negotiations with the President lead to a merciful 18:45 meet for northern contingent at Rainbow bridge as skies clear for what will be a glorious evening to be up in the hills.

Mr I arrives with BIG NEWS …apparently he has joined the Smartphone generation…”I have a Nokia” …spontaneous laughter from the cruel cultists of Android and iOS..it’s still a major improvement on the blackberry!

TJ’s bike sporting double test lightage for Brightbikelights next season best sellers..

IMG_5666 (1)

A rare climb up through Lyme Park is proposed, and Kerridge is ditched in favour of speed to maximise the downhill options from Sponds.

Josh joins us (this time forearmed with tactical mars bars), and Stunts GI style loose chinstrap gets some Joshing from the rest of the crew!

Crew sets off a quite a clip – but soon strings out as the lovely light provides photo opportunities galore.

Chapel descent fast and fun – and low tree shows Stunt why chin straps should be snugger fitting.

Plenty of gratuitous skidding on gravel under braking.

IMG_5706

A fully legal entry to the Park!!! passing dog walker & joggers, stunning views from the Knob, whiff of BBQ from the picnic area, long grasses swaying in the golden light, tis truly an evening to savour.

Exiting past the gate house holidayers sensibly sat with wine in hand, we complete our compliance audit and soon turn right up Julians Back Passage ! picking our way between the thistles and nettles, accompanied by our shadow riders.

IMG_5694

Last burst of energetic riding to Bowstones, tactical mars bars, and decision on descent.

The White mound back to full size! and a pair of wellies next to the gate… Trig point the better choice  than tip toeing through gloop to the stile.

Setting sun right in our eyes on the down and ups across to Sponds. lots of opportunity for “air” from the frolicsome riders.

IMG_5687

Stunt ends up chest high in marsh grass taking Not an alternative to the path around a boggy bit!

Rear blinkies on for the road to the Pub (last night of the year into pub without lights?)

Poachers busy, Ramblers excellent, table service even better, beat that photo competition, belgian beers, fiddling with new phones, Joshing and Japery.

Cool heading home – but at least TJ can test his lights.

TNR 30-07-2015 – I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles……………………..

Untitled

Words by Eric, Pics by Pete & Butty

Crew; El Pres, Butty, Slim, Shaun, Croxy, Mrs. Croxy, Stunt, BE Berne, Eric

Route; BL, Zig Zags, Salters, Crooked Yard, Charity, Narnia, wet bit, Leathers, White Rabbit, Nessitt, slabs, Back of the Moon, RHS, Bob’s bench, Leathers again.

Conditions; Cool and clear as a menthol cigarette.

Stats; Stunt, mechanical 101

Offs; BE Bern x 3.

Complete lack of leadership initiative led to a meet 6.30 BL, ride round the familiar trails go to a familiar pub and drink familiar beer proposal. – perfect answer.
As we gathered some unfamiliar but very welcome faces appeared, Croxy H, just back from 3 hours of tennis and a 15 mile walk, Shaun, just back from making more wonderful spirits in the midlands, and Big Events Bernard back after last week’s epic Huddersfield to Macc via the Poachers big event.

Untitled

We were a little late getting underway as Stunt found that the cause of the annoying chain rattle on the way to the start was incompetence, a mechanics 101 revealed that the chain had been replaced the wrong way round!!
After a week of grim weather the brightening evening had brought out a rash of citizens so we chose the Salters Way after the Zig Zags – what’s a very slippy and sketchy descent in the normally damp conditions turned out to be a flat out blind in the dry. Inevitably who goes down have to climb back up again and the grind up Crooked Yard doesn’t get any easier; onto the main road and then quickly back to Hacked Way avoiding Macclesfield’s finest TT riders on the way. We realized we’d lost Butty and Shaun – so which bit of Crooked Yard sounds like Hardingland – but were reunited for the climb up Charity.

Untitled

With skies clearing by the moment and a Blue Moon rising the conditions were about as clear as they have been. Narnia was amazing with shafts of evening sunlight giving everyone the real afterglow!
We had hoped that the “wet bit” would be as dry as many of the other trails but after dropping in it soon became clear that the laws of nature do not apply on this particular piece of God’s earth. But the drop was great fun splashing about in the mud and general slippyness. It was quite amusing to see the look on the faces of other pristine groups of riders as they clocked us all wet, muddy and grinning – a sort of “what the”expression.

Untitled

After a quick stop to order food we were off for the top of Nessit as the sun started to make it’s way home. Everything was in total alignment as from the top of Nessit look West to the glowing sunset and look East to the Blue Moon. For some looking downwards to the Leathers and the prospect of meat based provender was too much of a pull but for others it was one of those “could just keep riding forever” evenings so we split into groups to make descents to the pub.

Untitled

BEB and your correspondent headed up the slabs hoping to catch a spectacular sunset from the Back of the Moon; sadly the clouds had come in a little so all we got was a bit of a red glow from the sun and also from the faces of the Manage a Trois which we seemed disturb at the top.

IMG_5639

With the light going fast there was just time for a RHS descent, perfect with a little moisture on the ground, well perfectly slippy to be exact with BEB admitting to 3 offs in the 1K. Back over Bob’s, past an odd looking mother and son herbal bonding session and down to our spiritual home with the full moon sitting squarely on the summit of Nessit. – It doesn’t get better than this and eat your heart out Alan Garner!

Thursday 23rd July 2015 – Six of the best

Words by Eric, pics by Slim.

Crew; El Pres, Butty, Slim, Dunc, Lee, Eric

Route; BL, Zig Zags, Charity, extension, Stanley Arms, Tearooms, Shining Tor, Hooleyhay, Erwin Lane, Blaze Hill, Oakenbank, Poachers

Conditions; Cool but dry as a dry throat just before a cold.

Stats; El Pres – soggy suspension.

Offs; Slim.

A small and nimble group moving swiftly, at least in some places, was tonight’s plan.
Our President was almost a non-starter due to work commitments, but reality prevailed and at the eleventh hour the life presidency was saved.

A second direct climb to the Cat in as many weeks was vetoed in favour of the scenic route and a chance to see Eric risk life and limb down Charity on his “little” bike shod with super skinny Rocket Rons. At the end of the Zig El President was to be found crouched over and pumping in an unseemly manner. The focus of the attention being a saggy rear shock which was soon restored to tumescence courtesy of Butty’s very dinky little pump. (Ed’s note; all innuendo tokens now used for this piece).

Fortunately the conditions under wheel were bone dry and the descent of Charity was achievable on any bike, as demonstrated by the guy on the hybrid. This didn’t prevent Slim falling into the hedge on the extension but as he was last man down due to photographic duties no one witnessed the event.

Spectacular skies and sunset effects followed us on the climb to the Tearooms and it was certainly very clear why Shining Tor is so named. A super dry climb and screaming descent were the just rewards for the evening’s toils, one of those “man and machine in perfect harmony” occasions that you just want it to go on and on.

I don’t know if we are getting slower or the light evenings are encouraging longer rides but it so often seems that beer o clock comes round before everyone has had enough. It was certainly true for some tonight as the team split into two groups, one – get the beers in and two – we can’t not do Oakenbank on the way down. Either choice was good, and we were soon reunited in the Poachers.

Maybe it was the small peloton or the membership but an element of decorum was maintained. After helmets were removed from the table conversation turned to music, and the most disappointing best record you ever bought.

TNR 16-07-2015 PtD’s big summer bounce back

Untitled

words by Eric, Pics by Pete & Butty

Crew; El Pres, Butty, Slim, Stunt, TJ, PTD, Dr S, Luc, Eric
Pub; Dunc

Route; BL, New Buxton Road to the Cat, Danebower, Quarry, 3 Shires, field, Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, routes various to Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Summer – with wind, lots of wind.

Stats; El Pres, Odd noise; Stunt, chain entanglement.

Offs; Non admitted to

Good to see Luc on a flying visit “home” and riding the very swanky ex works BMC carbon something, now under the care of Slim at Austin racing and also Dr Simon back in the fold and all armoured up for some serious rocky action.

PtD had declared an end to the outbreak of roadie rowdyism and planned a route which took in every rocky descent in the area – no one complained. That is to say no one complained until we turned out of BL and into a nasty headwind which seemed unrelenting as we slogged up towards the Cat. El Pres was delayed by one of those mystery rattles which sound as though they ought to be serious but which you can’t find – by half way up he’d worked out that it was nothing more than a faulty break and sped off towards the top.

Untitled

During the summit regroup Butty demonstrated his rear facing Hero Pro Cameramagig, all set up backwards in the hope of getting some shots of the faces of the pursuing peloton as he sped down in the lead. It is fair to say that there was some little scepticism in the ranks as we set off but the final results are proof positive that the idea works; very well.

YDXJ0597

YDXJ0153

With all the tracks bone dry it was expected that Danebower might be a bit of a white knuckle ride but the wind put paid to that as despite pedaling as hard as possible; flat out remained unobtainable.
Down then, into the quarry where flat out is undesirable, and PtD was showing that despite being in rehab he hadn’t lost his touch in the difficult stuff. The dry tracks then made the drop to 3 Shires extra special. It’s not clear why the traditional summer swim didn’t take place this year, where is Big Events when you need leadership?

Untitled

On the climb out Stunt suffered chain entanglement but of more concern was the suspicion that another case of stuck Maxle was breaking out. There is now a plan to replace the snifter stop on a future ride with a compulsory greasing session – details to be announced.

Everyone safely negotiated Cumberland Brook and made it to the car park at Standing Stone, much to the disappointment of the guy in the red golf seen hurriedly re-trousering. Time for a taste of Sean’s not whisky, and for not whisky it tasted like rather fine whisky. The lad seems to have found his vocation and long may the supply continue. Suitably fortified and with food orders in jeopardy it was everyone for themselves to Sutton Hall with the LHS proving a fine final choice from PtD.

If this was rehab PtD, then we look forward to the “fully fit now” route – well most of us will look forward to it, all except Butty who will now be forever looking backward to it!

Untitled

“Maybe I just have everything backwards. Maybe it’s a problem of perspective. In this Post-Modern Age perhaps it is the digital experiences we ought to cheer as “genuine” and not those troublesome and inconvenient analog ones. Looking at it all f£cking backwards.”

TNR 2-7-215 All roads lead to Leek

Crews

Roadie   Stunt, El Pres, TJ, Coley

Off Road  PTD, Mr I

Pub roadies Slim, Eric & El Pud

Pub Mrs I

Route

Roadies, BL, Fools Nook, Jodrell Bank, Goostrey, Swettenham, Congleton, over Timbersbrook and into Ruston Spencer via Beats Lane, main road to Leek.

Off Roaders – furtlings from Roach End into Leek

Conditions

Wet start clearing to blue skies, warmth lost as sun went down, misty and cool return.

Notes

Summer having happened the day before the plan to head to leek under glorious skies now looked very dubious as it had rained much of the afternoon! But a plan’s a plan and weather geekery predicted it would stop soon enough.

Waterproofs donned, a flatter plains route seemed best, and maybe the weather would reduce the chances of meeting large farm machinery in the lanes? “said stunt as a large yellow piece of farm machinery trundled into barracks lane ..ahem.

Cobbling together route knowledge between the crew (and managing not to lose TJ) soon enough it was time to stop to admire Radio Telescope, and muse on the sign saying no mobile phones beyond this point…with a mobile phone mast in the field behind!

Roads and riders drying rapidly it’s time to enjoy the rolling countryside in it’s summertime at its lush best. Children feeding ducks at Reedsmere (by throwing the bread onto the road!), Man releasing rabbit well away from his garden, Middle aged men in Lycra on bikes (ooops that will be us then!)

Congleton was a definite grey area in the collective mental mappery, and with a trust in direction that would have made El Pud proud, a direct line to the right road was attempted to avoid the dual carriageway. With a few zig zags, laissez faire attitude to road signs, and a tactical alleyway, we did get the right road without getting lost (even if we couldn’t claim to know where we were).

Luckily for some !?? they didn’t know that there was the small matter of a large lump of landscape between us and Belgian beer. Those who have done the Cheshire cat will remember it, with views of the cloud to the left, lama’s and lifesize plastic jungle animals to the right, and standing on the pedals eyeballs popping out the front.

With time running out on the rendezvous with the knobbly boys, the Rudyard route was abandoned in favour of the Ruston certainty. Nice views of the lake on the last climb, then rapid road riding into Leek, final slog up the hill to the marketplace, check of the phones to discover Knobblies already a pint up.

Georges fish and chips devoured under the market cross, with leftovers thrown to hungry latecomers.

Minor rebellion as PTD and El Pres opt for wetherspoons for food (Hmmm)

But finally all are cosily ensconced in Den Engels, Mr I delighting in the book of beer geekery, and the world is that bit fuzzier and nicer.

Hold the front Page its El Pud! There must be an unusual planetary alignment.

Straight away there is controversial comment – its the germans this time!

General Faffing cannot disguise the fact that its a long and likely cold ride home. All clothing donned riders head out. A range of strategies from hard and fast, to slow and steady rapidly emerge. Full moon and mist make for some eerie and quiet moments, plus some wonderful sights like the dark mass of the cloud rising out of the valley mists.

Some concerted peleton chasing catch the longtime breakaway rider close to Macc, but further attacks fracture the group and its an honourable draw at the turn to Byrons lane.

Another summer classic – with caps!

TNR 25-06-2015 LP : West to East

Words and pics by Pete

Crew : Chris , TJ, Eric, Pete, Coley

Route : Middlewood to LP West Gate , through LP with twiddly bits. , East gate , Bowstones, the challenging descent to the lay-by, Pott Shrigley, The Poachers

Conditions : Fine and dry

Notes:

A small but elite crew

Old, classic territory which was good fun to visit again

The presence of TJ and Coley made it an authentic classic TNR

We were confronted by a youthful but determined National Trust Officer in Lyme Park …”You are not supposed to be here”…:-)

the east gate exit and ascent to / descent from Bowstones was classic. Big smiles all round.

TNR 18-06-2015 The Official 2015 BBQ

Words by Pete, Photos by Butty and Pete

Crew : Butty, PTD , Mr I, El Pres, Slim

Master of ceremonies : The Doog

Latecomers : Kersh, Dunc, Biggus Nickus, Big Events Bernard

Route : BL – Zig Zags – Teggs Rear Entry – Left and Right hand descents – Leathers – Nessit Ascent – Back of the Moon – Standing Stone – Reverse Chazza – BBQ

Notes :

Two campfire gatherings in two weeks…we have been spoilt .

Thanks to The Doog, our very own celtic Druid of the solstice. Refreshment logistics were once again…. impeccable.

There is nothing like the need for a fire to bring out the caveman instincts in the crew .

We had some Solstice BBQ pleasant predictabilities ….the just-in-time arrival of Kersh…Bernard (of the Big Events) having “navigational challenges” and having to be guided into the landing zone by Chris “Ground Control” Palmer 🙂

Dunc managed to drag out Biggus Nikkus, and with PTD back as a regular it felt like we had “got the band back together” 🙂

TNR 11-6-2015 Campfire Curry

Words by Alex, Pics by Butty & Pete

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Croxy, Lee, G, Mr I, Stunt.

Campfire: Dunc, Salad Dodger

Route: BL, old road, zigs, Teggs, reservoir climb, white rabbit climb, cheeky singletracks, reverse path to the car park, trail parallel to road (both sides) to standing stone, boardwalks, up charity, camp.

Conditions: Super dry, warm, windy later.

A faff free night

Notes:

Almost perfect weather forecast prompts near perfect planning & logistics for a campfire curry, and tempts out Croxy and Lee 🙂

With a lady in less than perfect temper attempting to spoil the evening we cheerfully and politely refuse our mood brought down to her level!  and set off..

Route chosen to avoid duplicating last weeks forest classic, although it does require the same start, and the regga regga sheep still need shearing in the field above the houses on the zig!

Fast dry and loose = smoking rotors and a near miss on leg art for Mr I.

Long climb to nessit, but there is a nice tranquility about riding between the trees on a gorgeous summers evening.

Views admired thoughts of shutlingsloe are abandoned for a long overdue return to the cheeky track to the right of the DH. Its a very very good choice – dry pine needles over firm loam is damn near perfect. We even manage to arrive at the bottom with only having briefly lost Lee.

Staffs Moorland summer series fell run in operation means a reverse climb up the “middle” where we bump into Steve & mates.

It does seem as if we have done the whole ride uphill the wrong way, but no one is complaining.

Stunt does peel off early to be the fire starter and is rewarded with a Deer duo encounter.

Camp established, bug spray applied and dead on time the wonderful Charlotte delivers the Butty ordered curry and El Pres procured beers!

Dunc and Slim arrive in the nick of time for their curry portions as the cans deplete at a rapid pace.

International Space Station (or to use the technical term – “the big red flashy thing on my app”) is sighted on both the 10:15 and 11:50 passes.

Fire is poked, talk is talked, temperature falls, group huddles closer to the fire.

The responsible camping “Human hosepipe” award of the evening is won by a country mile by Croxy!

We depart to allow the deer to reclaim the glade

Next time Mr I will provide a sushi chef (or was that the beer talking??)
