TNR 15-6-2017 Sandwiches and Sundowners

TNR 15th June 2017

Words by Alex, Photos by Alex and Chris.

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Troll, TJ, 3 Sheds, Stunt

Route: BL, New Road, Tea Rooms, Descent to Goytclough quarry, contour to the right, singletrack through the woods on the the goyt road, up to Derbyshire bridge, Buxton old road, left at the top, singletrack back to the footbridge, Erwood Hall, up the track to the shrine, Pym Chair, Lamaload, Waterworks, Rainow, Hurdsfield, Home.

Conditions: Warm, Windy, Cloudy, Dry Trails

Notes:

Smallish crew, dry, light till late…time to go high, go big, and bring your own sarnies!

PTD takes charge of the route (and 3 sheds still turns up!)

Some last minute provisioning required at the co-op and we are off.

Dark clouds and forecast shower at 6 (threatened but stayed dry) seem to have kept the moto’s away.

A chatty ride up, wind assisted, Buzzards hanging in the breeze higher up.

Tea rooms lawn being inspected by a curlew, and as we head up the track another flies off, and we spot the large chick scuttling into the undergrowth.

Wind really rather strong on the top, and a few drops of rain as we head over the stile mean its tops on.

A long time since we have done this descent – by jove it’s rocky and Gnarr! Dry and grippy though šŸ™‚

A bit of pushing on the countour section before we get to the nice singletrack, the difference down and out of the wind is incredible!

Dropping on the goyt road for the haul up to Derbyshire bridge car park we are struck by just how green and lush it looks (unlike most times we ride here!)

It’s only 8:15 but already the hungrier of our number as asking if it’s time for food yet, but the accompanying drink is likely to be a bad idea this early so we press on.

Skies brighten a little as we climb the old broken road, white fluffy tops on the marshgrass reminicent of Dr Seuss!

Briefly enjoying the views across Buxton, we seem to have turned into the face of the wind again..time to head off before the chill bites.

Have we ever been across here when it’s been this dry?? Narrow rocky and loose, but ace!!!

Regroup at the footbridge, and agree (some reluctantly) to picnic on the climb out to Pym Chair near the Shrine (just windy enough to keep the midges down, sheltered enough to be comfortable, not too much climb left)

Not many folk about by now, and we find our way (a little to precisely) to Erwood hall – picture stop (caption competition)

PTD avoids Kershaw gulch, and cleans the steps all the way to the stream, and we start the climb out.

Not sure whether it was the tiring legs, the need of food, or the rutty steepness, but it’s a struggle to get going, much pushing on the steeper sections.

TNR 15th June 2017

Finally we stop, packs are opened, Cotswold G&T, some rather good pork pies from the Co-op, lashings of mustard, Rhubarb Vodka, Single Malts and even some nuts šŸ™‚

Tis a good spot and the food is demolished rapidly, the drinks savoured, and the clouds (now darkening again) analysed for raininess.

Gloom is descending, lights on for our Ascending to Pym’s Chair (and all are grateful there is not much to go having eaten and drunk our fill)

More serious blowiness makes the descent to Saltersford an unusual mix of great grip on the dry road plus unexpected gusts blowing you off line!

Slogging up the “forgotten hill” Ā to the junction of Erwin laneĀ (well we always seem to forget about it until we get to it!), PTD decides we should turn left and do Lamaload.

No one mutinies (strangely) although 3 Sheds does decide he’s had enough, and as the clock strikes 10pm we are into the car park and onto the track.

There is alcohol left in the packs, and it seems fitting to have a final stop to finish it, a swoopy descent (with big air halfway down), a final grind up the road, and sheltering in a hollow (and avoiding the sheep poop) we finish the spirits as we take in the view of the plain.

El Pres still fancies a beer (although Stunt fancies his bed) so a parting of the ways in Rainow as Four go in search of Last Orders at the Robin Hood.

Rumour has it that it was eventually found at the 3 Crowns in Hurdfield!

A fine route (even if the legs complained the next day!)

Solstice next week.

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Troll, Stunt

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Charity, Snicketry into Narnia, Narnia to Witches cottage, Repeat, Hardingland, Lower Teggs, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Warm, Breezy, Heavy Showers, Muddy

Stats: One off (PTD)

Notes:

One of those nights where you ride despite the weather forecasts, and it turns out brilliant!

Route decided by the fact it was silly to go high in this wind, and that PTD & Barry had scouted some new “Snicketry” whilst on their self built e-bikes (a whole other story).

Even as Pete arrives we are wondering how long it will be before we get wet, Stunt predicts 80% dry…and he’s not wrong..it’s just that every 20 minutes or so it pi**es down really hard! Being very warm an outer waterproof is still needed but maybe not zipped up.

IMG_3249

Cracking views of sun & clouds & Ā downpours, buzzards & mobbing crows (rooks?) very clear too.

IMG_1732

Progress up to Windyways at times slow as we linger under trees when the heaviest rain hits.

Chapeau to a young lad who (to great encouragement from Dad) has done the climb from Leathers to the start of Chazza, we leave them to have a breather before carrying on.

Into the normal snicket, but what’s this turn left at Ā the first clearing!? ahah – PTD shows us swoopy “bombhole” strewn trail, much fun, although a few too many refusals for his liking!

IMG_3250

At Narnia Butty suggest we do it again, and after some thought we do! Although we go back the “hard” way by doing Narnia (the shrubbery is getting closer to the final gravelly bit all the time) and has drawn blood from a steely eyed Stunt!

Take two, and this time PTD goes into full on coaching mode with demos of how to position when approaching the rim (inuendo strewn banter ensues) šŸ™‚

IMG_3260

Despite the rowdiness of his class, it has had some effect as far fewer refusals this time, and more bombholing on the final one with new lines created.

Time marches on, and thoughts of exploring “south of Narnia” are shelved for another week, and a second Narnia descent followed (in heavy rain) down Hardingland to Rainbows and smiles!

IMG_3263

We arrive to cheers at the Sutton Hall garden muddy, wet and happy!

Some decontamination is needed before we can even show our faces at the bar šŸ™‚

A fine selection of Ales, with Lemon Dream and the intriguingly smoky Little Bollington for most, with Butty and Pete waxing lyrical about the Hoegaarden!

Conversation flowed freely, and not all politics on an interesting night of electoral history. Troll does pudding and coffee so he can stay to watch the election night fun on the tellybox.

Highland park and rinsing of muddy kit for the rest of us.

IMG_3259

Will the weather be conducive to solstic’y bbq’s in the next week or two…?

TNR 01-6-2017 Summer means slackness

IMG_3234

Words & Pics by Pete

Route: RH, Endon Hall Lane, Lidgetts, Kerridge Ridge, White Nancy, t’other side of the Ridge , Trig Point , descent to Rainow , The Robin Hood

Crew: Butty, Slim, El Pres, Coley, Bernard, 3Sheds, Trollster and ….the Croxmeister

Conditions: Beautifully warm, still mild at Midnight

Notes:

I do love the serendipity of our Thursday night rides.

Or was this week’s placebo of a route and slackism a pre-meditated plan? Who knows, but there are plenty of suspects.

IMG_3219

So, my understanding in the 24 hrs leading up to this ā€œrideā€ was that we would ā€œgo big and go highā€ …or at least thats what I thought El presidente said .

However, by the time we had assembled on the AZ side of the Rainbow Bridge there was a definite mood in the camp ….

IMG_3228

The Trollster had already let on that he was bringing some indulgences with him to celebrate his annual bike maintenance binge (or was it to celebrate his birthday šŸ™‚ )

With the weather being so fine, they were all keen to make most of it .

Just beyond the trig point we stopped and Mr I produced a veritable feast from his rucksack …..

IMG_3229

IMG_3222

Hendricks and Fever Tree Tonic …with cucumber of course …to wash down :

Stuffed Vine leaves
A selection of fine artisan meats
Mini pork pies
Posh sausage rolls
Samosas

The view down to Rainow and Ingersley Vale in the fantastic evening light kept getting better and better . Twas a fine spot to have a slack evening.

It was just about OK to ride the ridge to White Nancy , but then Butty led us back down to to the bridleway on the Rainow side of the hill.

IMG_3243

This , when you are full of snacks and Hendricks, was just about manageable ….but then we hair-pinnned right and up to the ridge again……oh dear

I was glad when the climbing stopped , and we could hoon it down again , taking the Rainow-bound track. This was dry , for the first time I can ever remember.

In no time at all we were locking the bikes up at the Robin Hood, and quaffing some fine ales outside.

I should have known that the AOE was bound to materialise later on.

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Old Buxton Rd Bridleway, Chazza, The Cheeky Woods bit , Narnia and the rest of Chazza in Extension, Standing Stone , New Campsite descent , Back of the Moon, Climb up Chazza, Original BBQ spot

Crew: Butty, Slim, El Pres, PTD, Coley, Bernard, 3Sheds, Kersh

Curry & Campfire: Dunc and Biggus Nickus

Conditions: Sweaty & Sunny, still mild at Midnight

Notes:

From about Tuesday I began to think ā€œthe weather is so good its time for a …..Forest BBQā€

El Pres was already on the case, and all we had to do was cast our vote by Whatsapp.

Wonders never cease but yours truly was the first to report for duty at BL .

IMG_3164

Paul must be closer to the next big milestone than his youthful demeanour leads us to believe – he has an ā€œE-bikeā€ . A Charge Cooker hard tail with 27.5 plus tyres in a fetching shade of blue. With a bolt-on Chinese DIY motor/battery/controls kit.

Despite the urge to stop and inspect it all we managed to get going up Buxton Rd . By the time we had got to the end of the Zig Zags it was definitely warm !

PTD, however, was hardly drawing breath as the benefits of a 48V little motor were being sampled to his delight. And everybody else’s slight jealousy

By the time we got to the start of Chazza it seemed we were experiencing a degree of congestion – don’t these interlopers know it is ā€œourā€ forest?

The cheeky woods bit was surprisingly boggy – despite the warmth and dryness elsewhere. The light through the trees as we got to the Narnia track was exquisite.

Much messing about in the forest, and then up on The Back Of The Moon to appreciate the sundown .

By the time I wound my way up to the original BBQ spot Chris et al had collected the beer and our bounty from the wonderful Charlotte. She will have her reward in heaven !

IMG_3167

Poppadoms and pickles
Little salads to be dodged
Bhajis to be munched
And three or four curries with rice and Naans a plenty
All washed down with the beer of choice – Punk IPA, or lager for the infidels.

Dunc and Biggus turn up with some fine Highland Park to celebrate his half century.

IMG_3192

The stars are up, the space station easy to spot and the banter and camaraderie speed us easily to the witching hour .

If Heineken made TNR Campsite Curries……

Lakes Weekend May 2017

Crew: Both days Eric, Pete, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Stunt, Mr I

Saturday riders Coley & Team Croxy (Crox + Joe & Greg)

Support: Ā Carol, Enid & Ruth (guest appearance from Kate) + Sophie the well behaved spaniel.

Conditions: Changeable with a bit of breeze.

Routes: Ā  Both sides of Kentmere into Stavely on Sat, bigger loop to Garburn pass on Sunday.

Stats: Ā  Ā 2 Offs (Eric & Pete), 3 Chain breaks (1 El Pres’s bike (under Greg), 2 for Mr I)

Day 1 Ā 33 miles & 3,300 ft climb, Ā Day 2, 20 miles and 2,500 (ish)?

Notes:

Two big weekends in one month…why yes…no stopping the TNR boys when they are on a roll!

Action moves to the Lakeland fells, an excuse to celebrate big birthdays (Stunt), visit Eric’s country estate, and get gnarly with the big tyres again!

Friday – fine weather for those arriving early, (Stunt has a 4×4 day in short wheelbase defender with wide tyres – much “off road” fun!). The lanes are quite narrow to Dewhirst towers, and the “lane” to the house is actually a tarmac’d bridleway! Sheep have only recently departed from the upper field, so the Tent is pitched on the upper Lawn instead, next to the garden “bothy”, and very conveniently a rare bit of flattishness amongst the sloping geography šŸ™‚

Carol has excelled in preparation – think Five star “Famous Five High Tea” and you will get a sense of the lashings of cake, tea, nibbles, main course, cheeses & coffee all being produced seemingly effortlessly from the welcoming kitchen.

Car parking planning (the TJ’s Motorhome to the drive, 4×4 capables in the lower field, and others through the gate into the upper field (just).

Many a house tour, admiring of the views (and the ornithological optics), and chatting

By 9ish all the arrivers are seated around the kitchen table for a trio of curries, a selection of wines, and homemade flatbreads. Conversation flows along with the wine, continues into the lounge with cheeses & port, coffee and cake and lakeland whisky!

Saturday morning dawns, a breakfast spread fit for kings, and the bikefaffing begins…

The new arrivals in some cases ready before those the night before!

Eventually by 10:20 we are heading up the steep bridleway for the “morning loop”.

Skies are grey, the clouds are low, rain spits and stops then starts again. Eric leads us along the lanes, through wet woods flooded with bluebells, past pungent wild garlic, and onto the fells. Much on and off with the outer layers, and we start to climb the east side of the Kentmere fells along grassy doubletrack with boggy bits and rocky bits.

The clouds begin to lighten and lift, layers are shed, we stop regularly at gates to count our number.

Finally we top out – wide bumpy descending – plenty of lines, long runs between gates…and the first of the mechanicals…Greg has borrowed El Pres’s venerable five, still running 9 speed! We find plenty of 9 speed quick links between us (some slightly embarrased to find they don’t actually have the 10 speed they should have!!)

A chance to snack on the provisions provided by the ever thoughtful Carol šŸ™‚

More descending into Kentmere itself, and by now we have worked out the gate protocol that keeps us moving smartly down and only each stopping at the odd gate.

A hint of sunshine by the bottom, enterprising farm kids are selling snacks at the bottom, other riders are starting out having parked up.

A bearded bikepacker is slightly lost, we manage to help despite clear language difficulties, past Kentmere Hall (very old and starting major renovation) and up t’other side of the valley, a steep but doable climb (which apparently is great the other way). More bike packers are in evidence (#Jennride South lakes 100) many of whom are faster than we are!

Nice track up and down along the top, and just as we start to head down along some great singletrack, Mr I breaks his chain…and experienced eyes despair at the state of his drivechain (he also has badly worn rear triangle…)

After a long faff we do get our rewards, a brilliant descent, two stream splashes, and down into Stavely for lunch.

A bikeshop, a brewery, lots of Cafe’s and a bakery…Heaven!

Thirst is first quenched at Hawkshead brewery….where the ladies are sipping Tiramisu Stout after a nice walk over. We opt for more traditional ales (except Dunc!). Then we nip next door for the best sausage, bacon and egg baps ever! (well since those at Loch Lomond a fortnight ago). A large mug of tea, the odd nip to the bikeshop, and it’s time to head off again.

The Skies have darkened again…rain is in the air, and within minutes Mr I has snapped his chain again!!! Luckily the darkness moves on, and we start climing into sunshine again. Steep road initally then flat along “between the fields” type tracks, Eric consults the map at a footpathy junction, and decides it’s not this left, and off we go on rocky trails through puddles and moor. Tis a lovely track (shame it’s not the one he was aiming for), anyway the plan evolves and we are going to get to go down the famous descent into Kentmere Hall! It is fast, wide, sweeping corners, and absolutely brilliant…although easy to get caught out on the last few corners!!!

Time marches on, and we need to say goodbye to team Croxy who have to get back for another Birthday :-). Dunc is feeling not quite right (we blame the 10% ABV stout), and Mr I decides he can’t risk another loop and want’s to buy a new chain.

Garburn pass is mooted, the sun is out, a smaller group start the road climb (to the beginning of the off road climb)…reality dawns that our legs are actually quite tired, and that a big loop is probably not going to work today. There are no mutterings as we turn into a little loop and swoop back down into Stavely to pick up the others and head (uphill!) back to camp for showers, beers and BBQ.

Tea and cake is first on the agenda, rapid shower rotation, a fitting of chain cassette, and borrowing of chainrings for Mr I’s drivechain, the inauguration of the hanging fire pit, the tranferring of firey coals to the bbq’s, and eventually beers, snacks and the sizzling of burgers.

A fine evening for sitting out (albeit well wrapped up) and soaking it all in, and then making a big dent in big Nic’s Highland Park (thanks!!) and demolishing the Club Haigh (as Carol rather fancied the blue bottle as a vase…it would have been rude to leave anything in it!)

The ladies retire inside for warmth and cheeseboards, we stay out longer, eventually coming in for coffee, cheese and in Pete’s case ZZZZds on the sofa šŸ™‚

Sunday morning

Most have slept well (despite the Curlews and Pheasant making quite the racket at silly o’clock), tea is brewed early, Coley heads off, and breakfast is taken as rain falls steadily.

Weather apps are studied and despite the leaden skies, the front is almost through and should improve soon.

Less faffing this morning, but we are ready no earlier than yesterday.

Today we will finally reach the Garburn pass!

A long road descent, followed by a flat thrash, and then a long road ascent…and inevitably a long chain faff by Mr I!!! Lucklily it seems to be the new chain jumping on the old jockey wheels…some debate on whether the rear mech is also “a well sweated asset” and much counting of the bikepackers mostly going the other way.

Eventually we start the first off road section, with great views down into Troutbeck, along fireroad style road.

Stopping at the end for Carol’s fruit cake, we regroup, and head up the track proper – it’s steep and rocky, but doable (if you had the legs and lungs on the steeper bits), the odd fell runners show that two feet are often faster than two wheels. On and on it goes, but finally we top out, and luckily the clouds caressing the tops of the bigger peaks are still well above us.

It’s cool, so windproofs are needed for the decent….and what a decent…Eric does warn us of big rocks…and he’s not wrong! Tis big, but there are good lines there even on the big drop offs, it separates the goats from the lambs! The second section (after the inevitable gate) is just as challenging, we all survive, out of our comfort zones some of us were!

The Kentmere church hoves into view once again, legs are weary, and there is little appetite for the Kentmere Hall climb, pootling back into Stavely on the lanes we opt for Wilf’s cafe, admire the bikes on view, and press Mr I to buy a new one! Portions are impressive (which is good as we have earned it). A swift half in the brewery and then time to face the not insignifcant ride back to base camp.

The sun is now firmly shining, and showers tea and even more cake await us. Packing up, goodbyes and thank you’s all said before heading home on a thankfully trouble free M6.

Eric weekenders should be a new feature of our calendar šŸ™‚

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Butty, Coley, 3 Sheds, G, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Windyways, Charity Lane, Butty’s snicket to Narnia, Lower Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, new campfire descent, up the “between the downhill”, “son of Dentists”, higher ressie track, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Warm, Stiff Easterly Breeze, dusty dry trails

Stats: 4 Punctures (3 G, 1 Slim), 1 Rim Ding (PTD requiring tube into tubeless tyre), 1 off (Slim)

Notes:

G returneth! (with pre BL puncture to boot).

PTD goes plus with 27.5+ hardtail and tales of emotor to come!!

Dry trails brings out the Liteville for Butty.

IMG_2994

Go big and go high we say…and off we go

G heads to the front as ususal, the remaining “glasgow boys” more reticent as they see how their legs go..

Days of dry weather mean the view is very hazy, as we climb the clouds build, and by the start of chazza the wind is keen, and it’s time to adapt the plan…its not muddy under the trees…:-)

The conditions have brought out some more occasional riders…some old school and old tech bikes ridden by t shirt wearing chaps..chapeau!

IMG_3004

Into Butty’s snicket and G promptly realises he’s punctured again (is it going to be one of those nights?)

Once going again – the snicket is fun and fast šŸ™‚

IMG_3010

As is lower chazza and the crazy extension!!

More faffing at the new campfire spot, this time it’s Pete, conversation mainly about how much fun the plus bike is (PTD converted!).

IMG_3012

Dusty dry, grippy roots..its a weird but good world under the trees!

Techhy climb up the middle, 4 clean it! more grins on the next section, a wait for Slim & El Pres (some low speed over the handlbar action), then PTD discovers he’s dented his rear rim big style – it’s not going to re-seal (although G does helpfully offer to hit it with a rock) , and tube is inserted (Stunt’s blackburn high volume pump impresses despite the girth of the tyre).

IMG_3029

After all this faffing it’s time to head pubwards, G needing a quick pump up a the smithy to get him there (and a tube donation at the pub to get him home)

IMG_3036

Lucan and Wreckless, quiche, burger or steak sandwhich, much catching up with G, Inverness to Glasgow debrief, look ahead to the weekend at Erics, and it’s whisky o’clock before we know it.

A proper summer ride (so that’ll be the weather broken from now on!)

Inverness to Glasgow May 2017

IMG_9506

Words by Alex, Pics by “the team”

Crew: El Pud, El Pres, TJ, Butty, Troll, Slim, Stunt

Route: National Route 7 from Inverness to Glasgow, mainly bike paths, quiet lanes and occasional road.

Conditions: Nigh on Perfect – Blue skies, light winds, no midgies

The night before

A famous five (minus El Pud and Stunt) assemble in Alderley Edge for some food and fizz at the Bubble room, before a fast and rapid stint across to Warrington to overnight at the Boutique hotel! El Pud drives there and a quiz is held to determine who is on which train in the morning (Virgin trains max 4 bikes)

Day 1 Inveness to Aviemore. “google said” 33miles, actual 40!

Early Start for the Trains – 2 fast trains to Glasgow/Edinburgh then 2 tiny trains to Inverness. Ice creams in the sun, and banter with the local “characters” whilst awaiting Stunt. Flying Manchester to Inverness, then assembling bike, ditching packaging and riding into town, a little later than planned we are all assembled at the start by 3:45.

IMG_9300

IMG_9308

IMG_9321

Sun is shining, El Pud is in charge of maps, and we are off, wiggling through the outskirts of Inverness, down lanes, across rivers, a quick stop to see prehistoric stone tombs (a big pile of rocks being investigated by german tourists!), some steep climbs to get back level with the railway (which we are gently following south).

El Pud has a mechanical 15 miles in…yes who could have predicted that!!! (pedal strips out of crank..irreparable, he retires via thankfully shorter and downhill route back to inverness to catch train to Aviemore).

The rest of us continue on, enjoying the scenery, but wondering how the projected distances seem to be getting longer than “google said”. Ā As its all uphill from sea level to the Sloch pass snackage and water consumption are considerable.

IMG_2768

Some refreshment is in order, and the Carrbridge hotel provides the perfect stop, a pint and a packet of crisps in the sunshine. Temping to stop longer, but we need to get moving or there will be no food later!

An occasional route discussion needed as route 7 heads in the opposite direction to the main road, but all is good, and despite taking the advice of a man drinking outside a pub in Boat of Garten (it was a rather posh village) we do the 5 mile “off road” track into Aviemore.

IMG_2776

It’s the highlight of the day, as smooth firm surface winds its way through heather and woods, with views of the mountains tinged pink in the angled evening light. Only one missing signpost to marginally delay our arrival. El Pud has just beaten us (and a can of Tenants extra to boot).

IMG_9325

Quick check in to the YHA and then out for food.

The local “shouty lasses” are already full oiled and amused by our arrival at the Caledonian hotel, we are happy to get a table for 7 overlooking the stacked bikes. Hearty food, adequate beer and then back for sensible o’clock.

Day 2 Ā Aviemore to Pitlochry

IMG_2780

Booked cooked breakfasts are devoured as the riding calorie consumption has been recognised by both mind and body. El Pud heads out straight away to find a bike shop, the rest of us mobilise in slightly more leisurely fashion, and the head for “proper” coffee (we the Troll does anyway). Cash machine & Tesco express for fund & snack replenishment, and proper coffee all round – but we are away by 10:15….and El Pud managed to get a second hand crank for Ā£10 (and purchase stunt a new bottle cage to boot). Butty manages to set his garmin correctly to collect stats (sadly none from yesterday)

IMG_2799

Starting in the woods its more climbing soon enough and although sunny, it’s still chilly (-1 overnight). Snow patches are evident on the mountains (snow at aviemore 2 weeks previously). Much of today we are in earshot of the A9, as there is only a narrow valley much of the way.

First stop is Dalwhinney “coldest inhabited place in the UK” and home to the Dalwhinney distillery.

IMG_2789

We opt for the standard 2 taste tour (the 6 taste experience a bit excessive even for us!). We learn how the condensers run best in the winter with the cold temperatures and snow melt..and the Winter gold bottled from October to March is indeed rather fine, so we buy a bottle with our discount.

Bramp Alert! El Pud has been texting old friends, and we enjoy an hour or so of fine company outside the nice cafe in the village, and hear how the Bramps are taking to life running a B&B away from it all.

Time to move on, and as we climb ever higher to the Drumochter pass, closer and closer to the A9, surface getting worse and worse. El Pud punctures almost immediately that we get over the top, the extra speed being too much for the …hang on..his advice to the rest of us was 25mm min tough tyres..and he is running worn 23mm ones!!

IMG_2811

Tis not a bad place to replace the tube, less amused when it goes almost straight away ..although Butty does find him an alternative bike šŸ™‚

IMG_9362

IMG_2835

A long (and well earned) descent takes us by the very scenic banks of the river Garry, so we stop for a wee nip, before headingĀ Ā into Blair Atholl where we have our second social stop of the day, as Butty’s Mum (and Derek) are staying in Pitlochry and have come out to meet us. We have starter with our cold beers (Haggis Nachos!!) whilst we hear tales of Butty’s childhood (and gently people watch…some serious drinking going on on one table..staggering and shirtless by the time we left..wide berth)

IMG_2837

The train is tempting, but carry on we must, mostly down (but the occasional climbs really hurt now!).

Pitlochry is quite smart, and fish n chips outside is a fine end to the day.

El Pud kept quiet about the final ascent to the YHA (but the views are excellent) especially with another Dalwhinnie to take the edge off the day šŸ™‚

IMG_9359

Day 3 Pitlochry to Callender

IMG_2838

The morning dawns with sunshine on the hills, cool in the shade, and coffee in the hand. El Pud does a brekkie run (we were too late to book cooked breakfasts last night) and we enjoy fruit, yoghurt, museli, croissants & filter coffee.

Today we will turn right away from the A9 and start cutting south west. Crossing rivers there are short climbs then undulations through wooded farmland. A good day for wildlife spotting, a private bridge (once the tractor had crossed) and dust devils on the potato fields.

IMG_2844

15 miles in – we need a top up, and coffee and a snack is ordered at a local hotel, run by two auzzies (and an old collie who is keen to fetch stick). The food and drinks take a long time to arrive, although the sunny position is no hardship. Cutting one small pie and two flaky sausage rolls into 7 – we lets just day we all had some bits!

Lunch plan for today is to stop at the next shop we pass, buy provisions and picnic on Loch Tay.

A posh deli & tea rooms provide the provisions (at exotic prices and troll excitement) – plenty of vintage cars (some nice jags!), and motorbikers on Sunday rides. Leaving the masses behind we turn onto the quiet road on the opposite bank of the Loch. Its a steady climb – the views get better, we pass the odd other cyclist, and by 1:30 Butty tells us we are far enough to justify the picnic stop. Refreshed we continue, and more undulations with “Net down” into Killin and the falls of Dochart. Its been hot so a tea stop and refill of water bottles is needed. very scenic

Final climb of the day, another 1000 ft or so, which turns out to initially be a gentle old railway line, but the abruptly turns right onto steep fire roads, then suprises us again with smooth tarmac through the forest!

We pop out at burger munching traffic polis at a greasy van in the pull off by the top of the pass.

Our route requires us to cross the road (some care required!) and back onto the old railway line – a fabulous descent clinging high to the valley sides on good surface (free miles finally!).

IMG_2878

Dropping into woods some steep switch backs and then more woodland trails. El Pud informs us that he has arranged another social stop with old uni mates, we stop in at Mhor 84, a busy upmarket establishment! We manage to get a table, and relax with a cold pint (and our priciest starter ever!) whilst Grant and Lyn ask us about our trip, give advice about where to eat later, and wax lyrical about all things Scots.

IMG_2900

There is still some way to go, we say our goodbyes and head back to Route 7. After a few wiggles the signs take us to the quiet shores of Loch Lubnaig, the surface deteriorates and El Pud inevitably punctures again!

IMG_2911

the last of the jelly babies and liqourice allsorts are consumed in the resulting faff. It is a beautiful ride, but we split into two groups as a combination of weary legs and desire to take pictures takes its toll.

Lead group leave cunning trail markers to ensure the laggards turn off the trail to the right pub for food.

IMG_2919

It’s not the best establishment we’ve ever been to, but hunger means we demolish our food with relish.

It’s well past 9 by the time we get to Callender and our independent hostel. A quick change and an explore for somewhere for a final drink…but wee scottish towns are rather quiet on a Sunday night, and even Tesco’s don’t sell you decent alchohol past 10pm. We do buy in breakfast provisions for the morning, and the walk has done our legs good.

A sonata of snoring and accompanying flatulence provide a suprisingly good backdrop for sleep.

Day 4 Final push to Glasgow

IMG_2925

Another boring sunny dry morning in Scotland (have we been good in previous lives or is fate storing something up!?). The route suggests that the “hard miles” are the first half of today, so after a healthy breakfast, a little bit of bike faffing, and a prompt start at 9:15.

A mile or so of country lanes leads us towards Loch Venachar and the Invertrossach’s. The path now takes us alongside the loch and then climbs up and over to the second Loch, it’s achingly beautiful, totally deserted and takes our breath away. Every now and again we just need to stop and soak it all in!

IMG_2975

IMG_2973

The climb is soon forgotten, we could have stayed there all day. Sadly we can’t, there is excellent descending on the far side, and we drop out into Aberfoyle, for the best coffee and pancakes ever!

With trains to catch, we cannot slack as much as yesterday, onwards..ever onwards.

IMG_2978

The scenery changes again to country lanes, occasional stretches of cycle path, and a not quite hilly, not quite flat landscape….until one final big climb ..it’s steep, it’s straight and it’s tough! we are very glad it’s over!!

Although we are heading for Loch Lomond, but there is no obvious sign of it until we are almost upon it.

Right at the bottom corner we hit it, and in a lovely country park setting. Down to the water we go, and have the best value stop – delicious sausage, bacon and egg baps with tea (all 7 eat for the price of a single Mhor84 starter!!) Lots of dogs chasing balls and sticks in and out of the water, and a hardy pensioner swimming in the cold water.

IMG_2984

Dragging ourselves away, we turn towards the urban lowlands, following rivers edging Dumbarton, then along the Clyde through Clydebank. Peleton forms, pace is cranked up..is it to ensure we get the train…or that late lunch & beer??. Not much urban broken glass, and even Partick with its tenaments and weird metal sheeted pigeon loft “clubs”? look nice in the sunshine. We do get some odd looks from the normal cycle commuters, school kids and dog walkers (or maybe they can smell us!).

Finally at 4pm we are installed in a street bar/cafe being served cold lager (and one dodgy cocktail) and ordering the whole pizza menu! El Pud cheers up the New Zealand waitress by getting her nationality right, we are looked after very well šŸ™‚

Train o’clock, and train 2 is delayed, but otherwise all goes smoothly (as do the G&T’s).

Even Warrington doesn’t look too bad in the evening sunshine. TJ & Butty ride home (major respect), Stunt hitches a lift with El Pud, and the rest negotiate a good rate with a transit taxi.

A most excellent trip….Glasgow to Carlisle next time???

Crew : El Pres, Slim, Phil B, Butty, PTD, and Lucas !! joined by Coley (mid ride)
Pub: Alex

Route :
BL – Zig zags – Old Buxton Road Bridleway – Charity Lane – Half Narnia – Charity Lane plus extension – Nessit Hill – White Rabbit Entry – Lots of Off Piste in the forest – Bob’s bench – Sutton Hall

Notes :

Lucas and Pete first to rendezvous 28BL 6:30 on the dot !

6:30pm and where are they all ?

It has been at least a year since we have had the pleasure of Mr Mollan’s company
Much banter over PTD’s new steed…he has finally gone all 650B …fully tax deductible šŸ˜‰

IMG_2725

So we finally got going up Buxton Rd about 6:50 !
It feels good to do the Zig Zags and the rough track in the relative dry and in good daylight .
We bump into a small posse of WNB’s as we reach the lane up to charity. Andreas was riding a Pace 853 Steel hardtail, the boy has taste.
Lucas was impressed as we interrupted our trip up chazza and hopped the fence to do a ā€œhalf Narniaā€ .

IMG_2720

It was a bit more boggy than expected but still induced big grins all round.

IMG_2722

By the time I got to the bottom of the Chazza Extension (which recently, BTW, has become seriously gnarly ) Paul had his new steed upturned with his first flat šŸ™‚ ….Tubeless is the agenda soon now doubt.
But the tyre faff had an ā€œup sideā€ …it allowed Coley to pop out of the bottom of the Chazza Extension and join the peloton.

IMG_2727

It was breezy and coolish by Standing Stone so we headed for Nessit and then a cheeky off piste route under the trees (thanks to Paul) . It was a perfect set of conditions .

In no time at all we were at Bob’s bench for a PTD supplied ā€œWhiskey Macā€ to remind Luc of the refined nature of our Thursday night excursions.

Sutton Hall was as hospitable as ever.
