TNR 24th August 2017 : Mackerel & Pizza

IMG_9126

Words : Pete Pics : Pete & Bern

Crew: TJ, PTD, El Pres, Ballster, Bernard, Troll

Route: PTD singletrack Forest circuit.

Pizza & Beer logistics: Doog

Late arrival :
Pete

Brief hello : Coley

Notes :

El Pres and our outdoor dining guru The Doog came up with another brilliant formula :Forest, pizza and beer (and a secret bonus )

New bikes for the Swiss Trip are breaking out all over – Troll on his Trek 29er , TJ on a tasty Whyte 27.5 boost hardtail.

“Berns

I was a wee bit late due to faffing with my own Swiss trip bike fettling (Hope 30t Narrow Wide on my 1×10 Cotic to replace the 32T) so I missed PTD’s single track forest special. But I did have time for a little photography indulgence….

IMG_9060

It also gave me time to do my own route and savour the benefit of my new tubeless set-up (courtesy of Graham from Sixth Element Wheels). I am a convert. On my descent of charity ,with suitably lower pressures, I felt like i was on a full bounce.

IMG_9091

On my way to the standing stone rendezvous I bumped into a soloing Coley. We spent a few moments admiring the thin crescent moon and the “mackerel” sky

IMG_9096

After various dominoes pizzas Mr D had a surprise for us…a TNR alfresco dining first ..a little Ben and Jerry’s ice cream each 🙂 . He spoils us .

Early on in the proceedings we did have a “Radio4 standard” discussion on the recent London fixie incident. Soon, however, the magic of the fire, the full bellies and the fine beer brought out the banter.

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Troll, Slim, Stunt, Bernard

Pub: TJ & Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Chazza, Narnia, Hardingland, Sadlers Way, Teggs Sheep pen, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Mild, Breezy, Showery

Stats: 2 Off’s for PTD

Notes:

With Butty soaking up southern california’s finest tech knowledge..and being near the Mexican border..Whatsapp went a bit Gringo ahead of the ride.

PTD needing little excuse to come loaded with Tequila Sunrise ingredients 🙂

Route choice designed to get us to the Teggs cocktail bar c8:30 ish.

Big events Bern also in attendance (sadly no poncho’s and cheroots in evidence)

Recent rain = big puddles on the trails, and there are plenty of clouds dotting the blue sky, some quite threatening.

IMG_9014

Pootling up the first zig a rainbow is peeking through behind the hills.

Tales of extreme Italian weather and epic dolomite riding from PTD, ,much talk of 29’ers hardtails and tyres for the Jura from others 🙂

Great light over the plain from the start of Charity, sunbeams and showers in equal measure.

IMG_8987

Much debate over the wind vector and whether we will get wet, consensus is yes but hopefully we’ll be under the trees when it does.

Chazza running wet but not too slippery with the odd very big rock in unexpected places!

Narnia muddy and slippery as PTD finds out to his cost landing after an exuberant water bar jump…wheels go sideways and he collects and arm and a leg of soft moist loam for his off!

Hardingland totally dry! PTD makes up for his off by cleaning the post stream climb 🙂

IMG_9009

Waiting for our team photographer we can see rain parallel with us in the valley, and then rapidly work out that we are in the path of another! It’ll pass in a couple of minutes and be nothing they say as the more enthusiatic head off to out run it by getting to the bottom and turning right! The rest of us break out waterproofs..in the nick of time as the few spits and spots turn heavy!

The optimists are found sheltering under a tree at the bottom 🙂

It does pass quickly…but sadlers way is now greasy!

Flippin ‘eck its a long and tough puff to the gate (for those that make it) and no one has enough left to give the rocky section a good go.

Cresting at the car park a stupendous sunset is in the making, plan adjusted to the “sheep pen” view point.

IMG_9017

A last slog up the grass and we have finished climbing for the day 🙂

Version 2

PTD creates the perfect “sundowners” …and there is plenty to go round 🙂

Hmm Teggs descent on Tequila in the gloom..what could possibly go wrong?

IMG_9029

Lights on, seats down!

Having safely negotiated the down and up and over through the heather, and the standard drop to the “top”, wet grass is identified as slippy..and providing the potential for a donut?

Version 2

PTD starts with an impressive 180, then has a go at the full 360…to end up flat in the middle by 270 🙂

All safely to the car park to the smell of hot brakes.

Sutton Hall busy so through to the back bar (good move)

We are well looked after, Poynton Ambrose or Hawkshead the ales of choice, layered black pudding potato combo lusted after by those not having pork.

Ski talk!! and a mini axis does a second whisky.

Crew: Butty, TJ, El Pres, The Ballster, Bernard, Slim & the Troll

Pub: Coley & Dunc

Route: BL , Buxton New Road, Tearooms, C&F, a half Danebower, Down to the Waterfall, Chumby, Standing Stone, Nessit & Dan’s Bench, Diverse routes down to Sutton hall

Conditions: Dry, sunny and very pleasant . pleasantly cool on exit from the SH.

Notes:

A surprise visitation at the sacred hour of 6:30 at BL by The Doog on his new (old) Triumph Bonneville . A beautiful machine.

A long climb up to the Tea rooms and then the Cat and Fiddle but the sun shone and much was good in the world

IMG_8909

only halfway along Danebower Hollow, and we took the challenging but grin inducing “route directe” to Chumby. The light was just exquisite and Butty led the way.

IMG_8900

IMG_8906

by the time i arrived at the waterfall/gate there was a liberally shot of Rusty Nail on-the-rocks being dispensed with quality sausage rolls and the obligatory Colmans . the boy has taste and style, and not quite at his half century even.

IMG_8913

Chumby seemed especially chunky about 3/4 the way down. rocks like babys heads (to quote El Pud) .

Our next muster point was Dan’s bench , for a snifter of Jura (thanks TJ) . The sun was down but the view was still magnificent .

IMG_8924

Bernard and my bead self were the last to leave the bench and seemed to have a monopoly on our route down : the Nessit fire track and then across the dam to the Leathers.

TJ and Butty were the last to arrive at SH ….I think Butty had some sort of wheel mishap ??

Our early start on the refreshments lead to an early inception of the “Ribaldry Zone” …needless to say much chortling ensued.

IMG_8943

Bizarrely I seem to recall some discussion on the cause of Frank Zappa and Lemmy’s deaths …..both prostate cancer

We made the dubious decision to fund the Troll on a whisky reconnaissance mission

TNR 3rd August 2017 – “The Lyme Experiment”

TNR 3rd August 2017

Words and Photos by Butty

Crew: Butty, TJ, Coley, El Pres, The Ballster.

Pub: Well-oiled Stunt & Salad.

Route: Bolly Viaduct, Birchencliffe brick works, Dale top, Bowstones, KnightsLow wood, Lyme Cage, Red/Green Lane, Bowstones x2, Beaver creek, Poachers.
Conditions: Initially threatening but cleared to some sunshine and dramatic sky’s.

Notes:
Unusual meeting point was suggested – the Bolly Viaduct. Our small crew assembled at 6.30ish under gloomy clouds.

Butty had heard of an August long experiment in Lyme Park; Mon-Fri after 5pm the rangers would allow cyclist to use the tracks to the Cage and Knightlow wood up to Bowstones. Of course this was only open until closing at 8pm sharp so we were on the clock with ambitions to descend the fast track from Bowstones and ride the Cage ridge.

So we set off up through Bolly, Pott Shrigley and the brick works. The sun comes out offering some cheer and after a short consultation we decide on “driest” route from the layby up the steep track overlooking Moorside quarry and onto Dale Top (a partial reverse Beaver). Amazingly we all make the climb to the top without any dabs! (Honest).

TNR 3rd August 2017

By now sunshine is turning the tide with very pleasant conditions and dramatic misty views across the Cheshire plains making some good photo opportunities.
Tracks and moorland towards the Gritstone were somewhat boggy but good time was made to Bowstone farm to start testing the newly permitted tracks into Lyme. This first experimental track is a really great, a fast descent and at the bottom we bump into the Nancy boys, who declare it’s not as much fun when your “allowed” to be here.

Through the woods we pass another experimenter cycling up. Then through the car park we are soon climbing the Cage ridge. As we approach the famous hunting lodge one more Lyme experimenter cycles past and it actually does feel quite novel to be up here. After another photo we charge down the hill to Admissions and Red lane, it’s very fast, skittish but really fun.

TNR 3rd August 2017

TNR 3rd August 2017

Main goals accomplished, we are within time limits and kept to the rules. Hopefully we are encouraging more cycle friendly endeavours from the rangers!

TNR 3rd August 2017

At this point it dawns on Phil that this part of the route is a repeat of his last outing, “Thank you very much” and another climb back to the Bowstonegate.

It is a long but steady climb along un-adopted roads, double track, single track, some bog and road to the Moorside School for naughty kids. This second Bowstones climb is a bit of a battle as a strong headwind has picked up providing a significant fight.

Peaking to see the Nancies for a second time tonight it seems to have taken them a long time to climb that hill!

Reversing our route to Dale top, timecheck! It’s 8.55! No dallying… ridge ride, hop over style, Beavers creek doesn’t disappoint and we hit the gate at 9pm! A ten minute road sprint and we are already locking the bikes in the Poachers bike/beer garden.

TNR 3rd August 2017

Poacher’s staff are happy to serve us food and we are happy to devour it (glad we made it in time).
Conversation starts with bikes and dips between travel, technology and lady bike shop owners (TJ fails to recognise his assistant from a week or two ago). Speaking with the Nancies, they went playing around Lantern woods, this explains the long ascent (and maybe a future TNR route).

Then the tactical twins arrive. The grin on Pete’s face and Stunts story of the Wobbly Wilmslow W(r)ide make it apparent that the rest of us need to catch up! We do, various Belgians join us ending with an obligatory scotch (it’s a tradition after all)!

TNR 27-7-2017 The Grass is Greener

IMG_8873

words by Alex, pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, Butty, Slim, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Dunc & Nic

Route: BL, Zig, Teggs, Leathers, Chazza, Bombholes to Narnia, Witches Cottage, The “old wet snicket”, Leathers.

Conditions: Humid, clouds clearing, then coming back in again for a shower late on. Muddy Trails.

Notes:

A small crew with Slim at BL on time shocker! Early getaway prevented by a late running troll. Much bike geek talk (new Sidi shoes for Slim!) and even some early Ribaldry as we wait.

Recent rain and continuing breeziness suggest the tops are not going to be at their best, so we default to the forest with a Teggs entry.

IMG_8869

PTD takes us up over the lumpy bits for some variety..and there are good views on offer, undergrowth is rather pedal catching, but does provide nutrition as Bilberries are in season and very yummy 🙂

Descent not for the faint hearted…so PTD shows us how to do it (Twice!)

IMG_8864

Teggs descent with added hazards of rare breed horned cattle lower down!

Food ordered at the Leathers, and an hour to do a loop…long grind up to start.

An enticing green ribbon is seen to be threading its way through the felled slopes on the way to Witches cottage, Butty and Stunt debate whether it’s the old “Wet snicket” and the answer is that it must be…for now on and up.

A few hind and several young deer watch us puff up to the gate at Hacked way lane.

We regroup at the “clean” entrance to the snicket just after the Dentists Bombhole.

Rain is starting to fall, its dark under the trees – lights needed, and it’s soft too – one or two parts are too iffy to ride the line. Maybe we need to hold off when its wet to preserve it?

Time to head back, so a perfect opportunity to explore the old snicket!

We drop in and boy does undergrowth hide a multitude of sins – its a rollercoaster of brambles, rotting brush, huge stumps, random logs and rocks, soft patches and lower down running water! We make it in one piece (although some are checking tyres to be sure!) and a few legs are bloodied.

IMG_8877

It won’t take much work to clear the worst stuff, and will ride well in due course…maybe could be improved to take a longer zig zag flowy route down the hillside?

Discussion is carried on to the Pub, and bike banter with a couple of familiar faces too.

Duchars, Golden ale and Guinness all feature in quenching thirst, hunger dealt with by large plates and bonus peas 🙂

Dunc and Nic arrive to ensure conversation is at a suitable level (it’s already there!) and a play your cards right higher or lower theme emerges on key questions being answered with google  fu (Roger Decourcey is still with us, The origin of “the pen is mightier than the sword” is much more recent than you think, and Norman cavalry horses much smaller!)

We may have emptied the bottle of Highland Park (our friendly landlord enjoying our quizzy banter too)

Butty's Photos TNR 20-7-2017 The Epic Dry Ride

TNR 13-7-2017 Summer Spirits Classic

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Croxy, Stunt

Route: BL, New Road, Charity & Extension, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, New Campfire spot & descent, Reservoir, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Cloudy, Warm, Hint of Breeze, Dry trails

Notes:

A very small crew – boosted by the welcome sight of Croxy!

Tutting at the start as El Pres notes wear on front fork stanchion  (despite recent seal replacement)…

Stunt on the Five (with full drivetrain and bearing replacement)…and bemoans tubeless tubby tyre trickiness having put the marin out of action.

Aspirations of Three Shires..but plenty of options.

We decide it would be rude not to do Charity, it’s very dry and loose! Croxy’s tyre throws up an Asteroid! (well large rock that hung in the air a long time and nearly took out Butty)

Extension similarly so, at the bottom El Pres adjusts his saddle and we discover he has a dent in the seat tube level with the clamp..my word he is sweating that asset!

He does admit to now “thinking about” replacing it…

The climb to the tea rooms has distractions in the form of paragliders – and the cloudy sky perhaps fooling the senses..there seem to be plenty of thermals and ridge lift on offer.

We also get a view from below of the main road wall “roadworks” – traffic lights still there, and the Manchester Wheelers time trialists must be stopping there, as a couple appear then peel off into the tea rooms car park for a sit down.

Cat has cardboard and polystyrene in the windows of the old restaurant – something going on..or just early winterisation??

We also see tractor tracks over much of the moors…but its not at all clear what has been going on…some form of spraying? certainly not muck (phew!)

A puddle at the start of Danebower hollow is almost a shock – with everything else so dry, its a long fast thrash to the other end 🙂

Not quite enough time for 3 Shires tonight, so off to Chumby – with new gate & fence now joining the sturdy gateposts seen a couple of months back.

Almost no water in the splash by the “normal” gate, and just a trickle on the upper part of the “brook” section, and pick your line in the ford at the bottom 🙂

There is cargo on board tonight, and we head to the new campfire spot to imbibe.

The “Red One” a “Gran Gran’s” 3 year old Rasberry Eau de Vie made by Croxy’s French Madam of Maintenance – it’s not bad…quite like a sloe gin.

Croxy has done a Troll and brought a fine selection of Antipasti, sliced meat, cheese and olives to wash it down…very civilised 🙂

The “Yellow one” is dessert..a sweet almost sherberty Limoncello.

We may have had more than one of each…

Despite which we survive the descent and find the right exit!

The clouds have cleared enough for some late evening sunlight and sunset 🙂

It would have been a perfect finish other than a near miss on the singletrack with a very late dog walking couple, and clouds of midges at the bottom of the ressie to the Smithy…mouth and nostrils closed!!

Sutton hall garden empty..but pretty full inside, although our table was vacant 🙂

Following the fruity theme of the evening, there is an Elderflower ale…but a quick taste is enough to switch to Lakeland gold.

Ribaldry disaster as Dunc informs we won’t make the pub.

Serious conversation ensues until we fortunately get onto the topic of Wimbledon..and then lady players…:-)

Still nice and warm as we exit the pub…but then it rains!

Luckily it doesn’t last long, and Butty gets back to Poynton only mildly moist!!

TNR 6th July 2017 : Twitching in the park

IMG_8706

Words and Photos by Pete.

Crew : Butty, TJ, 3 sheds, El pres, Troll and Slim

Pub : Dunc. After a big circuit of the hill on his Sabbath Cycles road bike .

Route : RB, Middlewood, West gate , Full length of Lyme Park, inc Red Lane and Green Lane , East gate , Bowstones, Sponds, Brickworks, Poachers Snicket , The Vale

Conditions : Warm and dry

Stats : 1 shag (Fnarr Fnarr)

Notes :

Three magic ingredients to this ride …..
– Appointing Butty as Operations Lead
– the dry and warm Weather
– Butty’s knowledge of Lyme Park

The world and his wife seemed to be out and about on the Middlewood Way..as the boys set a cracking pace to the West gate.

Our objective was a mini reservoir on the far side of the park, and a spot of birding. En route we get great views to the shadowy towers of Manchester City Centre, and to the east Kinder Plateau and Kinder downfall.

IMG_8715

IMG_8716

Was it a sh@g, was it a cormorant ? Not really sure but it was an entertaining route.

After our spot of birding, Butty took us to the east exit via Red and Green Lanes. We happened upon what ostensibly appeared to be a sports gear photo shoot in excellent evening light, with an attractive and youthful couple doing the modelling.

IMG_8709

Some of the crew even suggested that it may have been a different type of photo shoot all together …wink wink, nudge nudge.

The promise of a tipple sped us onward to Bowstones and a wonderfully dusty dry Gritstone Trail. What a pleasant contrast to last weeks mud and murk in the very same spot.

Butty and TJ supplied the drams at the Trig Point , we are much obliged.

IMG_3368

A quick tweak to the pressures of my trusty Hans Dampf and my (Cotic) Soul was a more agreeable steed on the descent to Pott Shrigley

Fine piedom and good ale awaited us in the Vale.

Dunc’s arrival brought another TNR certainty …the ribaldry zone. A magical mix of endorphins, beer and northern sense of humour.

Words by Stunt, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Dunc & Nic

Route: RB, Endon House climb, Lidgetts Lane, Lower back of Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakestondale Road Climb, Gritstone Trail, 1975 stone, Trig point, Dale Top, Quarry Descent, Ford, Birchencliffe, Sugar Lane, Vale fail, Poachers.

Conditions: Murky, Damp, Low cloud, wet trails

Notes:

What a difference a week makes! Dodgy british summer weather and suddenly it’s only the hard core riding…even a whiff of winters gold fails to attract further recruits.

Pete declares a Rainbow Bridge start, slack pub crawl option given short shrift, off we go.

Small crews are social affairs and a steady chat accompanies the steady pace (well Pete has done 3 cycle commutes already this week).

IMG_3356

Eye spy a little owl…yes really..on a fence post between the canal and clarke lane.

Cows in the field at the start of Kerridge ..we stop to have bad thoughts on what other bits of shonky gates of cheshire could be upcycled into 🙂 !

Its greasy rather than muddy, but the vegetation is the biggest hazard blocking those narrow lines, or attacking forearms and unprotected fingers!!

Moody skies as we crest Oakenbank, and a first look up to the higher ground…will it rain?

Time to climb on road, we each settle in to a pace that suits, and are soon lost in our own thoughts. Entertainment however is provided by rag tag groups of roadies belonging to the Cheshire Mavericks (if being a bit tubby, a bit middle aged, and a bit slow up the hill is Maverick!). Stunt amuses himself by keeping close enough to one group to be the Top Gear “spare car” threat, and no doubt annoying them by almost keeping up on 3″ tyres (moral victory for MTB 🙂 )

The tops are in cloud, but weirdly so are the valley’s either side of the road..but not the road!

Gritstone achieved, and proper tractor tracks have made the double track into double stream of sloppiness. Luckily the centre grassy bit is rideable.

Stunt declares whisky o’clock at the 1975 stone (well metal plate in stone surround)..sadly the usual 360 degrees of lovely views are all mist.

IMG_3353

Extra layers on as the dampness seeps in, and the Dalwhinnie Winters Gold slips down.

We find our way to the trigpoint, and through the gate we discover what the farmer has been doing….spreading muck…as far as the eye can see!!

It’s really quite impressive.. in a complete and utter coverage of every square foot of a whole moor!!! The brown stuff is also extra claggy with fibrous content.

Mouths firmly closed we manage the up and downs at moderate speed (still in the cloud), but still end up with bikes and legs covered in the stuff!

Quarry descent is opted for, and at least over the stile we are clear of the sh*ttiness, and the bikes shake most of it off on the way down.

Water splash helps clean the tyres, and (with only a quick stop for a bit more air in the tubby rear tyre for high speed stability) it’s down sugar lane to the vale.

Next time we will look in the windows before locking up…not a seat to be had in the house…so we head uphill to the poachers.

Nancies already tucking in to their food a little after nine, which makes us feel less bad about an earlyish pub.

Alton Pride, pies and gammon, and we are feeling refreshed and relaxed when Dunc and Nic arrive to lower the tone, relay tales of the hottest mayhem in living memory, drink dodgy Rhubarb cider, and force us into too much Leffe!

IMG_3360

It’s just what we needed, and ribaldry is duly enacted 🙂

IMG_3361

Can’t keep up with them on the way home..funny that !

Pete did make his friday cycle commute (but not with the new 650b wheels though)..Riding five days in a row (will he become super slim!?)

TNR 22-6-2017 Solstice BBQ ’17

IMG_3294

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete, BBQ Logistics by The Doog

Crew: PTD, G, El Pres, Coley, Butty, TJ, Dr S, Mark, Bern, Slim, Troll, Stunt

BBQ: Doog, Croxy

Route: BL, New Road, Charity to the Snicket, Dentist Bomholes x2, Chazza & Extension from Narnia Gate, Standing stone, boardwalks, forest chapel, up to Narnia Gate, new exploring to BBQ.

Conditions: Cloudy, muggy, midgy.

Stats: One tubeless faff (Stunt)

Notes:

All hail the Doog for another expertly delivered annual ritual bringing a big turnout from the irregulars 🙂

Dr S congratulated for his Iron Man at the weekend, G for his crankworks video clips, and Coley for his socks of searing brightness!!

Much catching up on the grind up to charity, in cooler conditions  (our scorchio heatwave having broken the night before) however humidity still high, and riding uphill was warm work!

IMG_3277

Eying the skies as we regroup at the start of Charity, some debate on whether there is rain on it’s way or not..maybe?

IMG_3285

Into the snicket and PTD has come armed with secateurs for some tactical trimming here and there, and they are deployed within minutes to ease the passage around a very boggy bit. All done and off down “Dentists Bombholes” , Butty learns to his cost to hang back a bit as a whippy branch bent back by the rider in front thwacks his arm sharply (minor flesh wound!)

It gets better the more you know it (this trail) so G suggests we reverse it and do it again! Well it must be steeper than it looks as a lot of pushing ensures, the odd rock feature is improved, and we do it all again 🙂

A quick explore South of Narnia turns out to be a dead end (or a right turn to virgin territory which needs a trail to be created), more pushing back up!

IMG_3280

Time is running out, the decent from the New BBQ spot is proposed, but with a tyre burp on chazza extension, delay causes rethink and a shorter loop back is required, boardwalks it is (but don’t turn left Pete!)

Mostly regrouped back at Forest Chapel more exloring North of Narina to get to the BBQ….discovers highly impressive stone BBQ a stone’s throw from our favored spot…one for using next time!

IMG_3282

Doog greets us with beers and  3 big BBQ’s fired and ready! He has wisely gone for the under the trees option as the very long grass is still wet from earlier drizzle. We rapidly scavenge fire wood and get a campfire going.

Croxy moves from online banter to actual presence – tis good to have so many familiar faces back 🙂

IMG_3314

We are fed a feast of burgers, sausages, lamb, chicken & baked potatoes (plus coleslaw), which despite looking almost overwhelming, we almost completely demolish (yum)

Beers flow (hidden unfinished beers from a few weeks ago are recovered – bonus!) and the conversations do too.

As ever on BBQ nights time flies, in what seems almost no time, the last beer is being consumed, the rubbish collected and the fire ceremonially extinguished.

IMG_3318

Here’s to Doog, Thursday nights, absent friends, and doing it again soon 🙂

IMG_3326
