TNR 12-9-2013 Weather Returns

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Butty, 3 sheds, Mr Incredible, G, Slim, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Zig Zags including Back Eddisbury bridleway, Windyways, Chazza, Narnia, RHS lower snicket, smithy, loop up and round the lower forest/reservoir, Kings head.

Conditions: Warm then steady rain, poor vis, slippy & muddy.

Notes:

3 Sheds does a ride when rain is forecast!

Alpine prep much in evidence – lightened Blood, Handlebar luggage from stunt, lightweight waterproof from Slim and rumours of magic tyres for TJ.

Spits and spots turned to steady rain by Windyways, and early lighting too.

Many a damp dog walker out.

Much reaquianting with wet conditions…it has been a good summer!

Unanimous vote for early pub, dodging the frogs and toads enjoying the moisture.

Landlord, Pies to die for, roaring fire (if you stand near the bar), softest dog, smileyist barmaid, and mini brandy/whisky axis of evil 😉

TNR 5-9-2013 Last of the Dry Trails

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, Mr Incredible, Bernard, Stunt

Route: BL, Chazza, Cat, Danebower hollow, Quarries, 3 Shires, Field, Chumby, Standing Stone, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Dusty Dry, warm initially but cooling off to mild.

Stats: A stat free night

Notes:

Another big ride to make the most of the last night of dry trails

Underbiked Shocker!! PTD in  of epic Lake Garda trails, then inspects Petes new bike and Mr I’s tyres and gives approval 🙂

G Form pads increasing in frequency – yellow and black teams.

Half and half pedal talk by the alpinists, with Stunt testing an un-pinned shimano with 5-10’s combo.

Annoyingly lots of buzzy motorbikes out on the cat n fiddle road..also making the most of the last dry night for a while.

Worrying murk on the far side of the Cheshire plain visible from the start of chazza makes us wonder if the forecast of no rain before midnight is correct! (happily it was)

Butty catches the stunning sunset from the track above the tearooms, and it’s lights on at the Cat.

Quarries there to be conquered by the brave, and the contour trail is dry and fast (like never before!)

More chunky descending  into three shires but no time to dally before riding out up the field.

El Pres shows us how to rock chazza after a slur on his riding character! Incredibly low ford and then everyone for themselves in last gasp push for the pub (a few RHS diversions were rewarding)

Five rings a bit hoppy for some, Beartown better, pies exceeded expectations, and Alp talk (including bolt weighing geekery) soon switches to skiing planning.

Some tired legs on the ride home.

TNR 29-08-2013 A hint of Almonds….and Autumn

From TNR 29-08-2013 A Hint Of Almonds

Crew : Sean, Doog, Butty, Coley , Mr I, Slim

In da pub : Eric after road bike sortie

In da pub as well: The Real Mates Mk2 : Kersh, Lloyd, 3 sheds and others….

Sutton hall

route : Zig zags, Teggs Nose, Nessit ascent, back of the moon, standing stone , diverse routes to Sean’s place

Notes : A fine and dry evening, but a bit cloudy. Sean was our leader on his swan song ride, before travelling south to earn his living in the ancient art of liquor and ale.
It was a familiar route, but a fine evening. Much stopping and banter, but why not.
slims new five got the better of him and minor leg damage (and cosmetic bike damage) ensued.

From TNR 29-08-2013 A Hint Of Almonds

We were lured to Dentist Towers by tales of Almond flavoured Bakewell tart beer . The boy done good. The strength of this beer remains secret.

TNR 22-8-2013 Eagle and Child to Three Shires

From TNR 22-08-2013 new steeds

Crew: G, Eric, Butty, Mr Incredible, Stunt, Coley

Pub: Slim, Dunc, Dan & Nic

Route: BL, Chazza, Wilboarclough to A54, Offroad across to former Eagle & Child, Gated roads to Cut thorne, Descent into 3 Shires, Field/farm out to A54, Chumby, Standing stone, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Warm & Buggy, dusty trails.

Stats: 2 Punctures for G, offs for Eric (2), G (1)

Notes:

Route conundrum of how to do 3 shires without roading to the cat leads to slighty novel route.

Flying ants thick on the ground (and air) all the way to the top of chazza, where a flock of starlings were also doing patterns from the cows field when disturbed.

G has his first mandatory pinch puncture at the bottom of chazza (mind the big tractor parked at the bottom!) and we see some whippet youths whizz down then back up!

Good pace and chat along the valley all the way to the eagle and child track. By ‘eck its a steep start to that there trail, and when it goes rocky both G and Eric end up with rear wheel spin out low speed sideways topplings.

Once at the top – great conditions for a fast thrash (or in the case of stunt on his old school voodoo as not as fast as it feels thrash!)

Time does not allow for the full reverse entry to chazza so we stay on the roads to Cut Thorne.

Steeper climbs now taking their toll on legs and blood sugar levels.

Lights on for the loose rocky trail down where G has his second puncture (and does he have a second tube? ..well we were impressed he had a first one!)

Grippy dew laden grass makes for some pushing on the way out as we start to string out, and fatigue also affects mental state – as half the party head towards danebower hollow at the top!

Chumby is gnarly and wetter than for a while, although still an easy ford at the end.

No time to explore the forest and big rings to the pub.

Pennine Gold goes down lovely, and Slim and Dunc provide new bike goodness to admire.

Other goodies on show – more space tech Gel pads (this time in Transformers yellow on black) that feel like snug arm/leg warmers (no crash testing performed). Alpine kit and spares debates swing from doomladen to Pah! extremes. Dan demonstrates rare Alliance of Moderation willpower, whilst a slight AoE head for another, followed by chasers.

Not sure we actually worked out the height gain – but surely good training whatever!

TNR 8-8-2013 Bumper Butty Ride

Crew: PTD, Butty, El Pres, Mr Incredible, Dunc, Bern, Stunt

Route: BL, Tea rooms, extreme RHS descent into the Goyt, meander on little known trails to the car parks, road climb to Pym Chair, Yorkshire Northshore to Shining Tor, Descent to Hoolihey Lane/Lamaload, Dead Mans hill, Smith Lane, Robin Hood

Conditions: cloudy, warm, chilly breeze high up later, dry trails with some mud in patches.

Stats: Butty has another off!

Notes:

A second week of bring your own food to make the most of the summer evenings

Kracken ridge talk turns into a super goyt-tor route instead

A few spots of rain on the way to the tea rooms, where the curlew still watches us warily from its mound!

Visibility impressive – Wrekin clearly visible..(and leading to a running joke theme all night)

A  long overdue visit to the RHS option at the first gates – and “man its Gnarly” but dry and impressive, we cut right at the bottom and take roads less travelled to contour/descend to the East end of the valley and then the centre and eventually the car parks.

On the road to Pym chair we pass FOUR lady bikes on their way to Windgather rocks! and also see a huge owl in flight.

Stunt and Mr Incredible do a top gear challenge and hare off down the singletrack past the shrine and then take the evil middle push/slog route back up to the ridge, main party do Pym Chair and ridge – which is clearly 5-10 minutes faster (but much less fun!!)

Butty time at Shining Tor, sadly the sunset was not a corker, and with good vis the lights of Blackpool claimed by Bern, and we can see both Winter Hill and Holme Moss.

extra layers needed to stay warm and lights on as we head for Lamaload – after unique dry conditions a few weeks ago it is definitely damper, but the mud is not deep and its still fully rideable. Fast at dusk is not for the faint hearted!

The final section to the lane has even more spiky thistles (prompting many a shocked cry) and hiding one startled deer. The muddy patch almost rideable if you follow the butty rut still there from our last ride. Mr I & Butty face their demons, but only one succeeds 😉 and there are a few leg wounds from the shrubbery amongst the crew.

Final push for the pub requires a bit of road slog up dead mans hill, but soon enough its dowhill all the way to the Robin Hood.

Now under new management they were very happy to see us, and with pool table and darts installed could be a future games night venue with a bit of notice for some late curry.

Cumberland Ale lasted only a few pints before we moved onto the appropriately named Endless pints 🙂

Talk of a bivvy night in mid september…and much admiration for Butty’s high tech shock hardening gel arm warmers.

A monthly whisky offer was too good to refuse, and with the northern contingent needing to negotiate oakenbank lane on the way home NO COMPLACENCY was the motto.

TNR 01-08-2013 Picnic at Hanging Stone

From TNR 01-08-2013 damn hot

Crew : PTD, mr I, el pres, gee, slim, Dr S.

Pub : joe horsefly

Route : BL, Sutton, Fourways, Wincle, Swythamley, ludds church, Roach end, hanging stone, gradbach, river Dane route to Wincle, fourways, Ryles Arms.

From TNR 01-08-2013 damn hot

Notes :

Very hot climb to fourways.
Speed moderation as descend to the ship inn where we collect Dr S. last week the landlord was remonstrating with us 🙁
Hot and humid. Trails still dusty despite thunderstorms . Rooty climb from ludds church to roach end ….beautiful evening light on the evergreens . Just a bit too much of a carry up to roach end….
But the ride into the dipping sun as we headed for the picnic spot made it all worthwhile. An excellent point to stop for buttes.
My thanks to graham, Paul and Mr I for donations of butties and pizza . And Paul again for another of his summer series of cocktails.
Butty was still feeling a bit damaged, I was feeling a bit jaded…so we skipped the river trail back to wincle . That hill never gets any easier but light of that “just past sunset” part of the day was beautiful.

From TNR 01-08-2013 damn hot

The Ryles was quiet, but the staff as attentive as ever. Joe was waiting for us , checking the lager was cold enough. The leather sofas were just the resting place after the evenings ride.

From TNR 01-08-2013 damn hot

TNR 25-7-2013 Get me back from Ludd’s church on time!

From TNR 25-07-2013 Return To Gradbach

Crew: PTD, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Coley, Stunt, Slim, Bernard, Mr Incredible, Dan, G

Route: BL, Sutton, Ryles Arms, Fourways, Wincle, Swythamly Hall track, long ascent top ridge. Ridge trail, lower trail to Ludd’s church, choice of up and loop back, down to the ford and along the river, or your own choice! Wincle, Ryles arms.

Conditions: Hot, buggy, dry

Stats: off from stunt.

From TNR 25-07-2013 Return To Gradbach

Notes:

last weeks assumption of another warm dry night were tested by rain during the day, but all comes good for 6:30 on BL.

Mr I resorts to his Marin having broken most of his drivetrain on the yeti (and everything else on it’s this year!).

From TNR 25-07-2013 Return To Gradbach

Dan returns with a shiny lime green cotic and a shocking tale of the five’s demise!!

Slim slips out from inside the presidential palace waving goodbye to Charlotte, and on a night with no El Pres 😉

G is back, and true to form is late, and will catch us up.

Big bern also joins the crew, and with the return of 3 sheds its a goodly sized posse.

first RZ at Ryles for food pre order, then an attempt at pace to do the ride in time.

great trail, great views, but great spread of riders by the end of the ridge. Kershaw protocol invoked, and the first riders are dropped from the pack in an attempt to double back and do the ridge again.

At Ludd’s church as second group decide to do some shorter out and return, and its down to four. Fantastic trail up ( only when this dry) and great ridge run and final descent.

Dan adds to his woes with a big dab that ends with a big down tube frame scrape through shiny new paint! 🙁

Hot slog up Barlow hill and air cooled descent to the Ryles arms.

headless black sheep, Hannah from the vale 🙂 and fine food.

Tales of mt ventoux (with matching jersey) drivetrain advice for mr I, stunning pictures of bute and some friendly escorting home of those out of the habit ( and forgetting that batteries are needed to make lights work) !

Was that the last ride of the summer of’13 or is there more perma summer to come?

From TNR 18-07-2013 Hot High And Hazardous

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Doog, Mr Incredible, Butty, Stunt

Pub: Slim & Dunc

Jumped in a Lake: Bernard

Photos by Butty’s “chest cam” ….marvellous

Route: BL, New Road, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, LHS descent to Lamaload, LHS of Lamaload, Rainow, Bull Hill Lane, Back Eddisbury Lane, Teggs, Sutton Hall

Conditions: 30 C (87 F) at BL, Dry, sunny, uber dry trails (apart from 2 bits of quagmire)

From TNR 18-07-2013 Hot High And Hazardous

Stats: Off & resulting read mech faff Mr I, Barbed wire scratches Butty.

Notes:

Primary route target of Shining Tor descent not deviated from (despite the siren song of our big events social secretary), or the shocking news that the Vale is now only serving food until 8:30pm. More disappointment as Stunt informs butty that the co-op has sold out of lollies.

Select crew (mainly the green orange club) get going pronto

El Pres’s “there’s not been many motorbikes past tonight” was a tad fate tempting, as the lardy leathery hornets buzz up and down as soon as we pass the turn off for the old road!

Closest death shave delivered by an overtaking Golf who almost took out Butty (whose chestcam footage will be closely scrutinised!)

Regrouping at the tea rooms we find Butty has disappeared into the establishment still in search of a lolly, but emerges with ginger beer!

From TNR 18-07-2013 Hot High And Hazardous

A curlew flaps past us repeatedly ..and we soon discover that it is protecting a chick wandering on the upper trail, we respectfully creep by.

Stunning 360 degree views from Shining Tor 🙂

LHS descent dry as a bone, and wicked fast!!

The final snicket to the gate on hoolihey lane retains its reputation for deception, rampant spiky stuff shreds any ungloved flesh, Butty hits mud at speed and ends up on the barbed wire fence and Mr Incredible catches a rut hidden in the vegetation and promtly offs over the handlbars! At the road blood is dripping from arms and legs, and Mr I’s rear mech controls are damaged beyond roadside repair. Still we’d all do it again 🙂

Butty & PTD instantly set Mr I an improvised fixed 3rd gear, and off we continue. Bonkers fast down the Lamaload descent (watch out for the loose stuff on the track when you hit it!), more bog to cross before the ride out.

Scarecrows of Rainow mean its a ticket to ride up Bull Hill Lane 😉

Hordes of bikers turning at the top for repeat runs between the cameras 🙁

Doog discovers his BB is on its way out..and head off home via coalpit lane, whist a now hot and tired crew make a final ascent to teggs for one more dry descent and then the pub.

Slim in residence, Blondes on the Patio, Duncan arrives just in time to bring us more beer, and then inside for food and banter.

A brandy night and the warmest ride home in living memory (Butty very lively heading back, a cider/ lager/leffe/ brandy combination may have had something to do with it!)

Next week roaches and dane valley assuming all still dry 🙂

From TNR 11-07-13 Buttys chest pics

Stats: One swim!

Many (statistically)insignificant’s out tonight – I wonder why!
Sun baked climb so straight up to Charity for a dusty and fast descent. Butty renamed Mr Incredible, “pinball” due to his bouncing side to side technique.

From TNR 11-07-2013 BBQ SLR Shots – after LR

Wildboar brook was a welcome but painful cooling to those that swam, also a temporary reprieve from the midges and horsefly’s – one had another nibble of Coley (he must taste of apples).

Climb to Standing Stones to argue the rights/wrongs of Burns usage of the term “Clamb”, sorted out by Mr Incredible “Burns – Nonce”!

TNR 4-7-2-13 3 Sheds Returns

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Doog, 3 Sheds, Mr Incredible, Stunt, Butty

Route: BL, Old Road, Zig zag, Teggs, Smithy, Chazza, Nessit, Smithy

Conditions: Warm, breezy up top, plenty of puddles on the trails

Stats: One Camelback valve incident & loose rear wheel for PTD, one off for Mr Il

Notes:

Small crew (growing injury list!) but at least our first injured rider is back from his dodgy knee!

Butty’s still got a dodgy shoulder – so does a parallel ride on his crosser (surely that’s a worse position than a mountain bike!?)

This week Mr I forgets cycling shoes! – luckily Stunt arrives early enough for a quick dash back for some size 9’s 🙂

Tis a warm evening, and Stunt is much mocked for his black evening wear style arm warmers 😉

Teggs fast until the muddy bits where it is very slippy (and Mr I’s prediction that he has an off every time Doog is on the ride comes true down the right hand side into some soft bilberry bushes)

Another knee testing slog up to chazza – then down , again running nice and fast:-)

Next stop Nessit for celebratory Pimms and Brandy and admiring the weather (beginning of some proper summer weather alledgedly )

Hooning down past the downhill and back to the smithy for pre ordered food and re unite with Butty.

All Ales good, food soon gone, and much banter. Mr I heads off for his early morning depart forgetting to leave payment!!

Team pocket searching finds we are able to settle (and just about stretch to whisky too).

Shoes and funds left by Mr I found safe and sound in the Palmer front garden.

Here’s to summer riding!
