TNR 06-11-2014 Biddulph without the Banjoes

Untitled

Crew: El pres, Slim, Dr S, 3Sheds and (our esteemed host ) Mr I

Route: Chez Incroyables – Cloud Trig Point – Dane Valley Way – Congleton Edge – Chez Incroyables

Stats : No Offs , Minor Puncture Faff (Slim)

Conditions : Cool and blowy, but never seriously damp

Notes:

A select group of guests forge their way through a damp , blowy and murky evening to locate the mythical Mellor Manor in darkest Biddulphdom. But no Banjos could be heard.

We had a small amount of trouble guiding 3sheds to the secret Mellor lair, but soon after 7pm we set off in search of Staffordshire Moorlands fun.

Untitled

Bosley Cloud was our first objective. The view was good but it was definitely too exposed to the wilds of the November night.

We turned tail and headed south towards Timbersbrook , soaking up the fun of rocky and root single track . Funsville was ramped up a gear as we found that the root single track woodyness has been developed with cheeky but exciting shutes down to be Gooseberryhole Lane

Check out this for a better idea of what fun can be had : http://youtu.be/eL8dRAjyU4c

Brown Edge was avoided, but a brief sortie along Congleton Edge had us grinning madly again before we dropped to the right down a tunnel like leafy/muddy/rocky bridleway and chased errant young cows .

Slim then had the great delight of fixing a puncture on the rear wheel of the muddiest ever Orange Five this side of Christendom .

Untitled

A tough climb back to Hot Lane and Mellor Manor …but the hospitality made it all worth while.

A seemingly endless flow of Belgian beer and craft lagers ….Xmas Soup , Middle eastern style lamb, chicken or aubergine Pittas ..then some wonderful cake-age ….plus Led Zeppelin on the Home Cinema .

Alas 3 sheds and Dr S had to depart near the witching hour…but El Presidente, Slim and the Minstrel Troll made merry until the early hours.

We are endebted to Ruth and Phil for a brilliant and entertaining evening .

Untitledwords by Stunt
Crew: TJ, Butty, Dunc, Slim, Stunt, Mr I

Route: Rainbow Bridge, Lidgetts Lane, Back of Kerridge, Double back to Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakenstone dale road to the Layby, Diagonal ascent to Sponds, Chapel Descent, Across field and dale to Poynton Coppice, Snickets & byways to the Farmers Arms

Conditions: Unseasonably Warm, greasy trails, muddy in patches

Stats: Butty faff, many a dab

Untitled
Notes:

Another small crew with riders dropping like flies, Coley to deep throat trouble, whilst El Pres pulls out at the last minute, surely nothing to do with a far from home poynton finish? 😉

Dunc is true to his word and has MTFU to join us (although on big wheeled lightweight rigid steed). Everyone else is Man enough on proper full suss machines.

What sights they are missing as Butty arrives on the Blood sporting Knife through helmet, spiders & skulls (warming up for the Bikesmithy fancy dress night next week!)

Untitled

Slim has obviously had to much time on his hands as the 5 is back to spotless shiny JPS trim!

Route is set for Sponds to get us to the Farmers Arms for 9:15 for food.

They don’t like it up ’em Pike as some tired legs from the Duks ride last night vocalise on the first climbs.

Kerridge super greasy and plenty of mud to bring Slims bike back to au naturelle state.

Untitled
Butty makes an in ride route adjustment and takes us up the back of Rainow, down some Teflon grass :-o, making the blood look like a carbon whippet he’s straight up Oakenbank only pausing El Pud style to salvage a rather new inner tube!

Pause for gels and drinks at the layby, where Butty confesses that the path may be tricky to find.

The usual slop at the start, but then a sheep cropped grassy path is fairly clear and surprisingly firm. A novel zig zag to crest Sponds, over the stile, and bouncing your bike to shake off mud/sheep poo also seems to cause the chainsuck of doom!

Root cause analysis = known issue with non standard chain ring, and Butty impresses with crank removal fix with impressive speed.

Untitled
Wet grass makes for fun descent, with even more unexpected exlaimations on the cut across to the coppice where a mini muddy bomb hole at the bottom of the hill almost causes carnage (and there we thought Butty knew the path like the back of his hand!!)

Urban riding to the bright lights of North Cheshires premiere night spot.

We lock up the bikes next to another famous Butty, remove shoes, doff caps and change clothing – but still manage to look rather scruffy vs the venue and clientele. We should not have worried as the catering team do us proud (apart from ensuring everything that Slim wanted was off!). Novel Weiss beers, chips in buckets, sauce in mini milk churns, and a nice corner spot to people watch from.

Untitled
We never quite managed to extract ourselves to the live music next door.

Goodness knows what Butty will do with such a short ride and early finish (by his standards), whilst the Macc bound folk head off into a stiff headwind that makes it all feel uphill all the way home. Twas worth it for new territory and a good venue 🙂

next week the opposite…hear those banjos !!

TNR 23-10-2014 Classic for 5

Untitled

Crew: El pres, Coley, Slim, Butty and 3sheds

Route: BL – Zig Zags – Track to left of Old Buxton Rd – Charity and Extension – Standing Stone – Shutlinsloe slabs – Piggford Moor – Back O the Moon – Standing Stone – Duckboards descent – Sutton Hall.

Untitled

No Offs , No mechanicals

Notes:

Mild and not too wet until the last 30 mins.

Untitled
A great classic route with a bit of Back O the Moon thrown in to warrant an extra beer. Piggford Moor was muddy as ‘eck…all thoughts of the dry Summer and early Autumn are disappearing fast.

Good to see Coley and 3sheds out again.

Leffe , Aberlour and more sensible strength beer brought cheer and ribald humour to SH. El Presidente brought reading specs and vouchers. Well done that man.

Crew: Mr I, El pres, TJ , Slim, Butty and Duncan

Route: Rainbow Bridge – War Memorial – Down to tinkers clough – Grimshaw Lane – Beeston brow climb and descent – Pott Shrigley – Charleshead climb – Brink farm/Bakestonedale road – Gritstone trail to Bowstones – Lantern Wood – Out to Middlewood way – road to Pott Shrigley – Attempt at Poachers – success at Church House

Untitled
offs: EL pres and Mr I had static falls in the Tinkers Clough 🙂

Mechanicals – El pres snapped chain

Notes:

A route constructed from a suggestion from Pete, some spur of the moment decisions and some recycled parts from last week’s ride. Felt like enough climbing.
By Tinkers’s Clough the slippy surfaces had claimed EL Pres and MR I !

Untitled

the Charles Head ascent was an inspired new route choice but the farmer part way up did not share our enthusiasm. Never mind.

Next stop Bowstones, and a quick descent to the shelter of Lantern Wood. It was an evening where it was always raining but never very much. thankfully it was mild.
Untitled

TJ’s generosity flowed in the Wood.

Unfortunately generosity was in short supply at the Poachers, despite our arrival 5 min before food deadline. Fortunately the Churchouse (Bollington) still adheres to the philosphy of “the customer is king” and chilli and rice was rustled up with fine ale tout de suite. We shall be back !

TNR 02-10-2014 Let’s do the Timewarp again

Untitled

Crew: El Pud, El Pres, Doog, Slim, 3 Sheds, Coley, TJ, Stunt, Butty, Dr Simon, Dunc

Route: BL, Riverside carpark, bollin valley, prestbury, chelford lane, various off road on road loops around the edge, swiss hill and artists lane included, Legh arms.

Conditions: Dusty dry and warm.

Stats: No significant stats

Untitled
Notes:

What’s this…El Pud back, routemeistering around the edge, Doog & Coley…

It could be 2009 all over again!

Darkness has not quite descended as we gather near riverside park, we cruise responsibly past the last of the dog walkers and make good time along the hardpacked bollin trail.

El Pud takes us on an unscheduled cross country route to take advantage of conditions, its new territory, great fun (watch out for wheel eating dips in the grass). Snicketty singletrack,  dusty climbs and rooty descents take us deep and deeper into the dark woods. Wonderment at the conditions – a good plan this 🙂

Even better a celebratory stop for Courvoisier and gourmet sausage rolls with mandatory mustard.

Untitled
Wildlife I spy urban edition required for the smoking Yooufs

Dunc catches up on his shiny GIANT crosser (its disappointly normal sized)..(I’ll get my coat)

More unerring directional confidence from El Pud takes us down a favourite descent, Dunc blasts up swiss hill but half way finds gearing may not be as effective as the heavy brigade who spin past.

Countouring fun then over t’other side of the road for the dry bridleways – which are so alien we almost get lost! Snicket sniffed out and out by the owl, a few last scraps of off road, then racing back to the pub.

Nasty rash of Peroni affects half the group, unicorn the wiser choice, not a burger in sight as the lure of the extensively excellent menu tempts us all.

Plenty of Birthday boy joshing, irrepressible butty, and familiar conversational themes 😉

Is this the sign of things to come? Welcome back El Pud

FNR 26-9-2014 Autumn Bivvy

Bivvy Boys: Stunt, TJ, Mr I, Dunc

Weather gods smile, sun shines mid afternoon after the rain and gloom of Thursday. Wind drops and we are set fair for the mini adventure.

Its a no nonsense carry all your gear, cook your own food, no tents proper bivvy.

Route is direct to the campsite, but with heavily laden bikes this is a decent workout! Mr I & TJ arrive first, collect wood, and drop gear. Stunt wins the faffing prize arrives with the dark and probably the most oversized tarp in TNR history :-0

Cheeky chazza to the Stanley for a cheeky pint (or two), its a select clientele (not us) large landholdings are de rigeur it seems. Check in with Dunc, heading out the temperature has plummeted! Bikes feel featherweight without luggage – just as well heading up the extension and chazza (its always a pleasant surprise at how rideable it is the wrong way round). Dunc’s light is visible in almost perfect planning!

Fire started with only two matches required and no firelighters!

Food prepared your choice of cous cous & chorizo  with roasted red peppers and asparagus, or chilli beans and sausages :-), followed by baked apple with chocolate. Washed down with bottled beers, red wine, pepper infused vodka, brandy and/or whisky. Tactical coke & tea also available.

Our resident bon viveur apologises for the lack of a cheese course and fresh coffee (next time!)

Banter real and virtual until the wee hours, stunning stars and retire to convenient sleeping bag 🙂

Dawn c7am to experience extensive wildlife, breakfast on micro stoves, and heading home as the sun crests the treeline (including responsible rubbish removal – we left it better than we found it)

Suggestions of a snow bivvy!

TNR 25-9-2014 Dreich!

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Mr I, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: El Pud & Slim

Route: BL, full zig zags, walker barn, chazza, extension, standing stone, singletrack from shutlingsloe gate to s bends, KM descent, singletrack path, rezzies, Church House.

Conditions: Fine drizzle, low cloud, mild, greasy trails.

Stats: a range of excuses from man flu to “work interfering with riding”

notes:

Unscheduled rain did not impress the crew, although the appearance of 3 sheds did!

Having had such a good run of late this caught us out in lots of ways – inadequate clothing, rear lights on almost dead batteries, and lack of mudguards.

A slack route was devised (low marks for originality)

Visibility deteriorated as we climbed and the cloud closed in and the light faded out of the day.

Much wiping of glasses and mutterings below windyways, actually quite tricky to work out where the road was descending to walker barn, head mounted lights now counter productive.

Brief stop to regroup at chazza – slippery up and sketchy down, Butty records his slowest descent ever – fogged up yellow lenses not helping much!

Pushing on there is a slight comms snafu with the singletrackers being leapfrogged by the laggards who do the s bends to nessit. Exiting the cloud halfway down the KM decent makes an amazing change as suddenly we can see! Lights of each group are now visible to each other, regroup ensues.

Lower favourites thrashed just because we can!

Long overdue return to the Church house, with an embarrassingly early arrival of 8:15. New Staff, prompt delivery of food, Harvest pale and Butchers dark both excellent. Sick slim delivers El Pud “fresh” from the train. Quadcopter video teaser, memories of Dan in pictures, and much bivvy planning from the Friday crew (with much mocking from 3sheds). This week we enjoy whisky in celebration of the state of the union (what excuse will we find next week?)

Increasingly damp on the ride home.

TNR 18-09-2014 – Big team, big down, big fun.

Crew; El Pres, Butty, PtD, Mr I, Slim, Ian, Dr S, Coley, Stunt, El Pud, Eric

In the pub; Dunc
Lame excuses; None registered.

Route; New Buxton Road to the Tearoom, Shining Tor, Hooleyhay Lane, Lamaload, waterworks, Rainow, Oakenbank, Poachers.

Conditions; Still warm and amazingly dry underfoot even in the wet places.

Stats; Puncture, The President , again

Offs; None

A crew assembled and assembled and assembled until we had a good surfeit of chums.

Long lost Ian turned up on some unpronounceable Spanish machine; all pivots and adjusters and things, and as shiny as ever.

El Pud’s return was notable for the return to a somewhat more earthy banter.

Untitled

The dry September lead to suggestions of an attempt on the normally “too boggy” descent to Hooleyhay and so everyone set off with a will, the A group even managed a sneaky Charity Lane on the way.

The ride up towards the Cat gave some spooky views as what seemed like a sea fret enveloped parts of the climb. The wind didn’t help much either! The shortening days had it dark by the top and the already strung out group was further spread by a puncture for El Pres. In the interview during the tyre change he said that the valve was “OK when I pumped it up earlier” – does this mean that it was flat earlier before the puncture Mr President?

The trails were wonderfully dry making for fine descents, and at each stop the Pud machine became more and more serviceable.
Whilst the Offs section records “None” the descent to the waterworks gave everyone something to report, even if it was only the need of a change of “base layer”. The high speed change of surface from slippy grass to marble like gravel tested skill and reactions more than courage because it didn’t give the “discretion is the better part of valour” option and your correspondent for one didn’t dare to crash at that speed.

Untitled

The climb out of the waterworks never gets any easier but beer legs were starting to kick in and Oakenbank is much more enjoyable heading towards the Poachers than away from it.
The usual beery chat was focused on the unfolding Scottish yes, no, which way will it go story. The banter moved between slight jingoism to full political incorrectness !
At one point the Duncs and Drews in our midst were bid farewell as we assumed they would have to go north to join the freedom fighters.

As the final hours of the count approached the possibly last ever round of scotch was imbibed – **** ‘em.

Route; New Buxton Road to the Cat, Danebower, A54, Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, Nessit, central descent, Leathers.

Conditions; Still warm and quite dry underfoot.

Stats; Punctures for Eric and the President.

Offs; None

Untitled

The crew assembled in BL for the usual faffing and banter. Butty weighed up the PtD Lapierre carbon thing and sagely pronounced that it was “lighter than a decent dump”
Light it may be, but it wasn’t enough to help PtD through the pain barrier and he abandoned at the junction with Charity Lane. Climbing to the Cat would have been too much for the injuries sustained when he was recently hit by a stationary car.

Mr I was well off the front on the climb. It wasn’t until we all reassembled at the top that his motivational secret was revealed; a sneaky half glugged down before the bunch caught up. The run down Danebower proved to be as skittery as ever and despite our best efforts at pushing the pace it was clear that we were not going to get to 3 Shires and the Leathers Smithy! Surprisingly the Leathers took the “Yes” vote and we were soon descending Cumberland Brook. Slim and Eric very professionally adjusted tyre pressures for maximum grip on the descent. At the gate there were one or two tales of near misses with the new rocks. Now it’s a moot point whether rock can actually be new – but new or old these blighters were certainly in places they haven’t been before. All stuck up and sharp and some the size of a tea chest or so it seemed.

Untitled

In the gathering gloom we made our way past the 3inch hole in the road in Wildboarclough, which is protected by 24 hours a day traffic lights and a droning generator, and up to Standing Stone. Communications from PtD indicated that far from being dead he was at the top of Nessitt contemplating a Córdoban sherry. Final route choice decided, we headed to the viewpoint post haste, lest Ptd become too gloomy about his incapacitation and finish the sherry – we arrived just in time. Toasts to Dan before a charge down to the reservoir. Crossing the downhill course Eric’s technical tyre pressure exercise ended with a load bang – leaving El Pres to speed on ahead, sniggering, safe in the knowledge that Slim would assist with the tyre change.

On arrival at the Leathers it was noticed that our President was missing. Having taken the singletrack he’d been visited by the puncture fairy too – running late the dynamic duo of Slim and Eric had taken a route Grande Direct leaving El Pres to fend for himself.

The Leathers sits up there in the “favourites” and full Thursday “Classic” merriment ensued. It was good to see Big Nick and Dunc. Conversation turned to whether we should start making local whisky and what it could be called.

It would be PtDistrict – Moon Shining Tor; hope it tastes better than it sounds.
