TNR 28-08-2014 – The Famous Five ride to the top of the hill and back down again.

Untitled

Words by Eric
Crew; Butty, Eric, Three sheds, Mr I, Slim

In the pub; Millions of WNBs.?
Lame excuses; Stunt, already ridden today!
?Route; Rainbow Bridge, Middlewood Way, Sugar Lane, Styperson, Normans Hall, Birchencliff up, Bridleway diversion towards Dale Top, Blakestonedale Moor, Pott Shrigley, Birchencliff down, Styperson again, Canal to Bollington, Ingersley Vale, snicket, Poachers
Conditions; The weatherman was wrong, glorious evening with hints of the Autumn to come.
Stats; Eric seatpost recalcitrance
Offs; Butty and Eric

Untitled

Is this a first, or could it be a last, a TNR organized wholly on smart appy thingies without the use of computers and forums. This inevitable march of progress gathered the famous five at the Rainbow Bridge for a northerly jaunt.
Three sheds was bemoaning the fact that it has taken 8 weeks to source a bit for his broken seat post and Slim turned up sans 5 to prevent further delays with jammed chains.

Untitled

After a slight misunderstanding we were all soon tackling the tricky technical climb up through the woods. There hardly seems to be a yard of ground without jumps bumps and berms in there these days but it makes for interesting choices on the climb. Butty chose to attack a near vertical mud bank with his usual gusto; after some delicate counting we were able to continue! Eric’s seatpost let him down, literally but the contact with the ground was less spectacular than last week.

Untitled

Untitled

The climb up Birchencliff has been beautifully resurfaced but remains as steep as ever, then onwards and upwards across the crossroads all the way up to Dale Top. – It felt like this might be an evening with no descent at all. After a short sit on Butty’s favourite rock we enjoyed the bumpy descent – speed but not too much is your friend here. The planned second ascent of Blakestonedale was abandoned in favour of reaching the pub for food so it was back down Birchencliff and through the woods in the gathering darkness.

Untitled

A bit of a sprint along the canal, urban route finding (or lack of it) in Bollington and a last climb up the snicket for a welcome return to a revitalized Poachers. The on screen picture quiz was particularly absorbing.
The march of progress saw 4 Peronis and a lone proper beer as the opening gambit but some were soon working through strong Belgian stuff in urine bottles before moving onto Brandy – progress?

In the pub; Just us again.?

Lame excuses; El Pres, having the Presidential Residence remodeled.

Route; BL, OBR, zig but no zag, Teggs either side, Leathers, reverse Nessitt to the slabs, two sided valley, Shuttlingslow slopes, green lane to Wildbaorclough, Standing Stone, boardwalks or RHS descent Bob’s, Leathers.
Conditions; Whilst the A word was banned last week there was definitely a hint of Autumn in the air tonight. The darkening skies finally unleashed a deluge as we hit Wildboarclough.
Stats; None
Offs; Eric

With no celebrations on this week it was a business as usual ride with the infamous two sided valley as the main objective. Judging by the banter on Whatapp during the week we do need to write the first volume of the history of TNR before it is lost to fading memories.
With Slim running a little late he was sent direct to Langley whilst we set of at what seemed a brisk pace to the top of the hill. Sides were chosen for the descent with some being a little more circumspect this week! Mr I arrived at the bottom with more speed than brakes, although it was due to lack of frontal lobe rather than lack of frontal pads.

Untitled

Food was ordered at the Leathers before the climb up Nessitt and along the slippy singletrack to the start of the slabs. Things seemed smoother over the slabs with most folks cleaning the climb before making the plunge down the two sided valley. Eric managed the plunge OK but failed miserably on the easier traverse bouncing on shoulder, head and hip before coming to a stop in a rather undignified manner (And causing PTD and Slim a heartstopping moment ..! – Exec Editor)

We regrouped at the start of the track along the side of the Wildboarclough Road. How this beautiful green lane can have been downgraded to a mere footpath is incomprehensible and a travesty after the generations of bona fide travelers who must have passed along it’s way. At the bottom end the heavens opened but we were on the home stretch.

Untitled

Untitled

As the rain continued the A team choose the boardwalks and the sensible chaps went for the less risky option of the slippy roots on the RHS.
The Leathers held it’s usual welcome and in the immortal words of Slim – “it’s a proper Thursday evening”

TNR 14-08-2014 – Butty’s Birthday Booze Blaze.

2014-08-14-147 - 2014-08-14-150

Words by Eric, Pics by El Pres !!!
Crew; Stunt, Butty, TJ, El Pres, PtD, Eric, Three sheds, Dr S

In the pub; Just us.?
Lame excuses; Slim, altitude training in Majorca
Route; BL, OBR, zig but no zag, Teggs either side, Leathers, bridleway to Charity, snicket, Standing Stone, back of Back of the Moon, front of Back of the Moon, track to Nessitt, central descent, Bob’s, Sutton Hall.
Conditions; No showers on us boys !
Stats; Stunt, 1 x puncture, 1x brake caliper fright
Offs; None

2014-08-14-146

Butty the birthday boy had come prepared with everything for a celebration evening; except a route, but everyone seemed happy to head for the forest for what seemed like the first time in a while.
Sides of Teggs were chosen with both being as slippy as each other judging by the tales of daring do in the car park. Whilst Stunt removed his rear Maxle, recently restored using local bike shop heavy engineering, to change a puncture, Butty suggested we had the first birthday snifter of the evening. After about 2 miles it seemed a little early but why not – the chosen birthday spirit was to be flaming Zambuka with a coffee bean in it, accompanied by savoury sausage rolls. Unfortunately our resident pyromanic was unable to get the aforementioned libation alight but what the heck it tasted good with the sausage rolls. Suitably fortified we headed across the dam and up the bridleway climb to Charity Lane.
At the bottom of Charity, as everyone head off for the snicket Stunt investigated a worrying rattle from his rear end and found that the brake caliper was more than a little loose – local bike shops for you !

2014-08-14-136

The clockwise orbit of the moon was a nice variation on a theme with everyone enjoying some slippy singletrack before climbing to the Nessitt viewpoint for “seconds of sausage rolls and sniftah’s”
With Dan’s ashes now scattered close by there was also a second toast, to Dan; Always with us.

2014-08-14-137

There was a nip in the air and lights were useful for the descent, reminding us that whilst the A word is still officially forbidden at this time of year, it is no longer mid-summer.
We all arrived safely at Sutton Hall just before the forecast deluge arrived, all except TJ who seemed to have got lost again and arrived solo.
With the usual range of beers on offer some chose Bass – “reminds me of drinking 30 years ago”. Yes but 30 years ago most beer was c**p.

TNR 07-08-2014 A Variation on the familiar (with a posh finish)

Untitled
Crew : El Pres, Slim, Butty, Mr I

In da pub: Stunt & Lara , Dunc

Route : Cottage Lane , Ecton Ave extended Snicket, Lidgetts corner, Redway Tavern corner, half a reverse Kerridge bridleway , Rainow , Jumper Lane, The Highwayman , Gritstone Trail, Sponds Hill , Pott Shrigley, Bolly, Legh Arms Prezzas

Offs, stats etc : Slim chain snap, Slim failure of bike cleaning and maintenance, Slim good preparation for having a Kmc 10 speed quick link (re-usable !)

Untitled

Notes:

Summer Hols = small turnout .
Small turnout = variation from the norm .

Untitled

An entertaining circuit in familiar territory but with a few bits not TNRd in quite a while.
Ecton Ave is something that should be done more often . A reverse attack of kerridge bridleway is always an interesting challenge ….as is the ascent of jumper lane …and the ascent to the Highwayman.
Getting to the Gritstone trail never seems difficult from the highwayman.
Sponds hill was magnificent at sunset …but the clock was ticking and we dropped to Shriggers as fast as we could…but in the late summer growth we found it hard I to find the track.

Untitled

Legh arms was an inspired choice IMHO. Posh lager, good value nosh. No whiskers were ordered.
Alex excelled by managing to combine dinner out with His good lady with a qualification for the TNR “in da pub” category.
It was a team exit via the BV this evening.
All in all…just about perfect.

TNR 31-07-2014 Late Leek Leffe

Words by Eric

Crew; Stunt, Butty, Slim, Dunc, TJ, El Pres, Eric

In the pub; MrI, Dr Simon
Lame excuses; PtD – Whistler Bike Park

Route; BL, Sutton, Ridgehill, Hanging Gate, Plague Stone, Rose and Crown, Eagle and Child, Goldsitch Moss, Shawside, Roach End, Roach Grange, Tittesworth west side, Leek.
Conditions; Coats on and off before we even set off but then we somehow we managed to miss the heavy showers
Stats; None

Offs; None
Notes;
With the summer moving on and T’Tou’er now a distant memory it was time to risk being seen scantily trousered and on road bikes. Road bikes also seem to fit with the current outbreak of rather “sudden” shirts !

Not all our off road roots were forgotten though as we climbed up through Sutton it was every man for himself with no sign of a Peloton. The earlier heavy showers after a couple of dry weeks made the roads super slippery and descents required an element of caution. Over the Hanging Gate, past the Plague Stone and on the plunge to Greenways Bridge Eric met white van man, right shoulder dipped under van man’s door mirror, rear wheel locked and slightly sideways – meant to do that !

Resisting the temptation to call in on Luda at the very smart looking Rose and Crown we headed South to the badlands and out onto the Staffordshire Moorlands. Bleak on a good day but tonight we were treated to some fine evening views although stopping invoked the wrath of the six toed midges. El Pres had planned quite an epic route which required a little debate at the “this is not the main path” sign in order to keep the evenings social programme on track.

The pace quickened around the lesser trodden side of Tittesworth reservoir and we were soon in Leek at Den Engels to meet Mr I, the appointed social secretary for the evening and self styled “low countries a phile” and Dr S who just seemed to stroll along at the right time. Two exotic beers of your choice were quickly consumed although Mr I’s selection of flavoured Gin met mixed reviews. On y’re bike again for a bit of urban to the Bombsite Curry house. Whilst waiting for our table we were pleased to read in Curry News that our chef for the evening had come 50th in the world curry hall of fame or something. Whatever the accolade the food was grand although the Cobra was not Leffe. No time for pud or coffee as we rushed back to Den Engels for last orders.

Whilst elder statesmen did warn the youngsters, they had more beer before realizing that Leek is not Macclesfield. A motivated peloton set off and despite the miles spirits were maintained most of the way.
A good night, and morning!

TNR 24-7-2014 Doog does BBQ

Crew: Doog, El Pres, Butty, Dunc, G, 3 Sheds, Mr I, PTD, Slim, Stunt.

Route: There are many paths that lead through the trees in the forest 😉

Conditions: Perfect

Stats: Off (Butty)

Notes:

A second week of proper summer weather and Doog takes control with the trusted solstice BBQ plan.

Slim and Stunt B ride direct and help with the setup – manly firestarting the camp fire, whilst Doog gets the disposable doing and the food on.

Troops arrive soon after with the odd bandaged wound for the daredevil Butty.

Bug spray liberally applied,Beers opened, views drunk in, golden light across the landscape captured through lenses.

Stunt has brought the offending maxle and wheel hub sleeve from the Coed y Brenin trip (thanks to BiycleSmithy John) and pays homage to the Engineering God that is 3 Sheds whose prophetic words on cutting it out were bang on.

Burgers, sausages, spuds & coleslaw demolished and then onto the serious business of sitting around the fire, working our way through the beer and talking an eclectic mix of deep thoughts and frothy man nonsense 🙂

Darkness slowly descended, bringing out the stars in the night sky, extra layers were donned as 1,000 feet up it still a little chilly on even the warmest of summer nights.

Major Axis of Evil avoided due to epic fail to bring hard liquor, but maybe that was a good thing!

Eventually its time to bring the magic of the evening to an end and descend back to reality with souls recharged (avoiding gravel traps!)

TNR 17-7-2014 Ladies Night

Crew: PTD, Emma, El Pres, Butty, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Salad Dodger, Stunt, TJ

Extended commuter; Joe

Pub: Katie, Charlotte, Jane, Bern & Sandie, El Pud & Vicky,G , Coley, Sharon, Carol

Route: BL, zig zag, Teggs, Singletrack shortcut, up Hardingland, up Hacked Way lane, chazza, extension, standing stone, back of the moon, grassy descent to the bottom of the shutlingsloe, Singletrack past the bench then straight down and round the reservoirs, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Hot & Buggy

Notes:

Our ride tonight designed around Katie who chose a lovely summers night to come out to meet us post ride. Invitations to all WAGs too, and while Emma showed us all how a ride should be done, wiser heads came to enjoy some al fresco ambiance in the Sutton Hall courtyard. Best idea of the night goes to Bern and Sandie who had been open water swimming. Much catching up with Katie who had run up Shutlingsloe earlier in the day! Food and drink ordering caused slight chaos and mr I somehow managed to order table chips from the Big Apple!

a very civilised evening and all too soon the ladies were departing, extra drinks were required to fortify us before disentangling the most complex bill in TNR history 🙂

Whisky o’clock and toasts to Dan to complete the night Marvellous! 🙂

TNR 10-07-2014 – As Slack as a slack thing ……

Words by Eric

Crew; Coley, Butty, Slim, Eric

In the pub; Mrs A, Charlie (dog) and Billy (another dog).

Lame excuses; Everyone else was packing their bags for the Doog weekender …. I ask you !

Route A: Rainbow bridge, Middlewood Way, Windmill

Route B: Marple, Middlewood Way, Windmill
Conditions; Very pleasant
Stats; Non

Offs; Would we admit to anything

Notes;
Butty took on the leadership mantle with a proposal for a roady ridey but in the end it turned out to be a two ended railway line.
Slim the commuter and Butty met at one end all crossed and Eric and Coley started from the other, Coley very retro even down to the cap and Eric trying out the racing steed pre the weekend Rhynog Raptor.
So it was off down the Middlewood way to the rendezvous point, occasionally being overtaken by folks in traccy bottoms on Halfords specials.
Following the rendezvous, route options were discussed – and rejected in favour of a route Grande Direct to the Windmill.

So is it a TNR record, in the pub by 7.45?

Peroni was the only option and all comments about the barmaid have been censored.

So as we sat watching the sunset and the passers by one Peroni slipped into two Peroni as the song goes, and all became well with the world. We toasted Coley’s return to the waged and welcomed Mrs A and Billy and Charlie.

The only mild embarrassment was when a citizen obviously impressed by our bikes and “serious” cycling gear asked if we’d come far !

We ought to do this more often – but not too often

TNR 03-07-2014 Scotch via The Rocks

In the pub; Slim.?

Lame excuses; Non submitted

?Route; Buxton New Road, Cat, Danebower, Quarry, Blackclough, 3 Shires, Knar, Sparbent, Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, RHS, Bob’s Bench, Sutton Hall

Conditions; Warm damp and very midgy in places

Stats; Butty – gear cable

?Offs; Butty- fell in river

Notes;
Bit windy as the peloton set off up Buxton road at what seemed like Tour de France speed. The wind made the climb a little more like hard work than recent ascents but apparently not for Mr I who was off the front again.
What is taken in one direction is given back in the other as the wind assisted the descent of Danebower; there were tales of skittery bits and tank slappers on the dry gravelly track. Across the road the terrain was more suited to Danny MacAskill than us mere mortals but despite a few pushes and shoves everyone emerged grinning – but not as much as after the superb drop down into the valley. The final bit to Three Shires was the first reminder of why this is a “path less trod…” with rocks the size of small cars. The second reminder of paths less trodden was when the crazy decision was taken to tackle the “swampy route” out – it was a little drier than normal but we were aware that this was where Coley had almost disappeared on a previous visit.
The stupid steep climb out at Knar was too much for Butty’s gear cable so we left him behind. Well most of us did, Coley was assigned to help the repair as the rest headed on.

At the regroup at the gate on Cumberland Brook there was much tyre pressure faffing before the descent although if we’d stayed a bit longer we would have witnessed Butty’s head first arrival following a 3600 spin over the ford.
Over Standing Stone and the RHS was just too good to miss on a dry night before a blast down to Bob’s Bench for a PtD birthday tipple. Unfortunately the Scotch was accompanied by that other famous product of the Scottish Highlands – midges, so we drank two hasty toasts and legged it. Slim was due to rendezvous at the bench but it was a case of “ *um” let’s get out of here.
Leffe and Golden something or other in Sutton Hall, with the lowlight of the evening being the bowl of “table salad” ordered by MrI – what’s that about.

TNR 26-6-2014 Cat n Slack

words by Stunt, pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Coley, Stunt, Mr I…..and El Pud!

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, zig zags, walker barn, Chazza, extension, Cat, bottom-o-t-oven, Standing stone, rezzies, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Mild & Dry

Notes:

El Pres fills the leadership vacuum with a proposed classic route – Chazza, Cat, 3 Shires & Chumby!

In parallel, a sustained trolling appears to have persuaded El Pud to join us…only he’s running late.

Compromise is he rides to the cat on the road whilst we take the fun route 🙂

Mr I shows off new yeti rear end – with redesigned all alu lower half (Carbon not up to the job it seems!). Taking bets on what goes next (not much of the original now left apart from the main frame)

Warm climbing, but not buggy, with El Pres setting the pace.

Chazza superdry, also loose, fast and skittish – just like the extension then!!

Wild boar (or at least very boar like dark hairy pigs) being reared in the paddock up from the Stanley (lets hope they don’t escape!)

A familiar figure digging posh new planters at the Cat…it’s Mrs T…now part of the Cat outdoor experiences crew and general helper outer. We are invited inside for a swift half before the imminent closing time of 8pm “it’s more of a cafe these days”

Cumberland Ale on draft and the earliest lock in ever! which is extended to a few hardy souls and Mr T eventually. We hear the stories behind the Canoe Rack (prompts a lot of enquiries), and the red radio controlled glider suspended upside down on the ceiling (waiting to be claimed)

A half has become two pints for most, and without noticing time has run out! No time for the grand route, just a dash back & over the forest to get to Sutton Hall in time for food.

El Pres & Mr I fight it out to be at the bar first (a tie?) happy valley, leffe, grub and raucus conversation.  A proper TNR albeit slightly slack. 5PB for many (but then the first two don’t count if there has been a ride inbetween?)
