TNR Thursday 31st March : Waiting for Slim.

TNR 31-3-2016 lama load by first light

Words by Eric, Pics by Slim

Crew; El Pres, Coley, Butty, Mr I, Dunc, BEB, Eric, 3 Sheds initially, Slim eventually!

Route: BL, NBR, Tea Shop, HooleyHay, Standing Stone, Sutton Hall

Conditions; Dry and cold.

Offs; BEB x 3

A lack of wind of the metereological sort was the deciding factor in going high tonight so we set off on a route Grande Direct to the Tea Rooms. The absence of the expected looney bikers on a clear and pleasant evening was very welcome as we enjoyed the climb. However Slim in his last week as an M56 customer was always running late and various communications ensued; “I’ll catch you up”, “I’m ten minutes behind you” lead us to hang around at an increasingly chilly tea rooms. After 15 minutes and with an absence of lights on the horizon we uttered his own immortal words, and set off for Shining Tor.

TNR 31-3-2016 lama load by first light

The climb to Shining Tor soon had everyone warm again but further comms suggested Slim was still only “10 minutes” behind so we waited again – well all those planning to take the plunge waited. 3 Sheds decided that the descent would be one slither too far and headed along the Yorkshire North Shore – brave move unless you are happy to fix snakebite punctures on your own. As some of the party started to show signs of hypothermia a light was seen heading up from the Cat – even Nino Schurter wouldn’t do that in 10 minutes but we waited anyway; so that we could hurl abuse.

TNR 31-3-2016 lama load by first light

Despite some misgivings about the going being in the soft to soggy category we headed for the descent and were soon hurrying through various levels of bog – but most of the way gravity is your friend. At the bottom most confessed to talking to themselves – “ weight back, keep your weight back, no further back back than that, further, oooooh…..sh*…..” As we regrouped at the bottom telling tales of scary eyes seen in the woods (Deer rather than Bully Thrumble, for those who have read Thursbitch) we were two chums missing. Eventually they appeared, BEB having fallen off 3 times. An examination of his tyres revealed the root cause – hybrids, bald hybrids, for a surface that required every ounce of grip available.

TNR 31-3-2016 lama load by first light

After the substantial amount of standing around tonight the clock was beating us and without sandwiches a quick re-plan had us heading towards Sutton Hall via the forest rather than the fleshpots of Bollington as originally intended.

As ever the hospitality at Lord Lucan’s gaff was fine, with at least two of our number struggling to cope with the fare. The shock came when after suitable lubrication it was decided that a round of the “whisky of the month” was called for before heading home. – The price of a wee dram has now reached that of a gallon of unleaded.

TNR 24-3-2016 Nessit Bench

IMG_7474

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete
Crew: El Pres, Dunc, Slim, Mr I, Stunt

Bench: Nick

Pub: Kersh

Route: BL, New Road, Chazza & Extension, Standing Stone, Shutlingsloe gate, singletrack to the S bend, Nessit Bench, standard descent, rezzies, St Dunstans.

Conditions: Light rain, low cloud, poor vis, heavy rain later.

Stats: off (Dunc), Puncture (mr I)

Notes:

Dan’s bench has been installed in prime position on Nessit hill, so Dunc provides the G&T, and El Pres the frozen citrus for a Celebration ride.

Let it also be noted that Slim was first at BL on time and ready (at BL but not out doesn’t count mr I)

Weather front has gone through according to the radar, but there is light drizzle nonetheless. Heading up we are in cloud well before walker barn, and bar mounted lights are going the be the only useful ones as visibility is down to about 10 feet.

At the start of chazza we note that all bikes are orange (one way or another) although vive la difference as we have 3 sussers, one hardtail and Dunc’s big wheeled rigid – which “I need to ride more as its so good every time I ride it”.

IMG_7457

We head on up having decided against a 2 sided valley loop, the pause being long enough for Mr I to get cramp!

Chazza descent reminiscent of riding 10 years previous on pathetic halogens – still challenging despite the improvement in bikes.

Extension greasy and with recent tractor tracks also unexpectedly muddy in all the wrong places, one off and several dabs reported at the bottom of the oven.

By Standing stone we are well ahead of schedule, but there is no point going high, and any descent will lead to an uninspiring climb.

With a small posse and a lot of gin, we decide to do what Dan would have done (maybe) and have 2 g&t stops 🙂

IMG_7468

The trees near the shutlingsloe gate have provided enough cover to keep the light precipitation off, so we cluster there for round one.

Hold the front page shocker! Comms failure extrodinaire!! its Hendricks Gin….and we’ve brought lemons!!!

Heads hung in shame we make the best of it, and find some of the lemons are actually limes, so go with something green as the best of a bad lot. Hmm smooth 🙂

El Pres tried in vain to persuade us to MTFU, but its FI instead, and off towards nessit on the singletrack.

Tree Down!! not trail sabotage, but a rotten pine has collapsed across the line, and there is not easy way round. Stunt suggests…as we have time, that we should move it.  It is quite a substantial bit of wet timber..and there is more than a bit of mockery to the idea. However mr I is on side and after some “to me” “to you” chuckle brothers comedy we actually manage to get it parallel to the path and return the route to “cleariness”.

Fortified with community spirit its a quick blast up the S bends, and the cloud clears a hit so that for the first time we get a view…Cheshire plain lit up in front of us, and a rather fine bench to inspect.

IMG_7469

IMG_7470

Geeky admiration of the fixing method, proper joinery, and carved sunflowers and a bike.

No response for the maybes on WhatsApp, so we crack open the Gin for round two, only for a mysterious light (moving wrongly for either bike or walker) to turn out to be Biggus Nickus fell running up in the “Nick of Time” (I’ll get my coat)

Top weird undercloud lighting effects very moody.

It’s starting to rain again, so the Dunny is proposed after last weeks visit, although proposed Pizza meets demands for curry and rant about Mr I’s lunch (a well known pizza chain “product”.

El Pres and Stunt get to the smithy and it’s all dark behind…rain is getting harder..bravely they head down to make sure food will be ordered.

Its hissing down within minutes, and proper woodburners are very welcome. Pizza (including curry topping especially for Slim) via app from Macc Flames.

Comms link re-established – we are slightly concerned that Pete appears to have been punctured by Mr I! It turns out that punctuation has been passed over in the interests of freezing fingers. A new record of 8 tyre levers (3 broken) says everything you need to know about punctures in inclement weather.

IMG_7472

Wreckless uncharacteristically odd, but Cheshire cat and Banks much better. Guiness or Hobgoblin crisps a revelation!!!

Pizza delivery not forthcoming, El Pres (frequent customer) rings up and gets a dubious response, more crisps please Kersh who has arrived in Antoine de Caunes casual chic just in time to get the next beers in.

Pizza arrives shocker, and some token free garlic bread. We’re not sure we are going to eat it all, but we are saved by the landlady who (being out on the razz) has the munchies..

A final short ahead of venturing out – luckily mostly dry kit, and its stopped raining!

First BBQ within a couple of months and clocks change this weekend 🙂

Thursday 17th March – Can it ever be too hard ?

TNR 17-3-2016 A bridge too far

Words by Eric, Pics by Pete
Crew; El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, 3 Sheds, Mr I, Eric,

Route: BL, OBR, Charity, Standing Stone, Back of the Moon, 2 sided valley, Wildboarclough, A54, Tagsclough, Eagle and Child, Alpaca B’way, Hawk’s Nest, 3 Shires, Soggy Field, A54 again, , Cumberland Brook, Wildboarclough again, Standing Stone again, St Dunstan’s

Conditions; Dry and cold.

Stats; Eric – wonky jockies.

Offs; Non reported

In the warm glow of a couple of beers the previous week a suggestion was made of a sandwich night to allow a slightly longer ride. This coupled with unfinished business at the back entrance to 3 Shires and Mr I’s penchant for turning the simplest food idea into Gourmet Night lead to the “big picanic plan”.

The only planned part was the picanic and the target of Three Shires. After climbing up to Teggs we decided to carry on towards our primary target rather than get sidetracked. In hindsight that sounds like a rather familiar mistake which has been made at this point before. Nevertheless we pressed on for a route grande direct – straight line across the map. Well as straight as decency allows. Charity was safely negotiated before the going got a little tougher over Back of the Moon with a bit of a push followed by a bit of a splosh. Butty found the “Vicar of Dibley” sized muddy pool and was fortunate not to loose his seat as they say in horsey circles. As we descended the two sided valley the temperature inversion was dramatic to say the least.

TNR 17-3-2016 A bridge too far

Two choices from the valley – up the very steep bit by the old Post Office, or up the steep bit by the Rose and Crown – steep bit please. Time was ticking along and after the long slog up to the entrance to Tagsclough there ensued a bit of a debate about the wisdom of our plan – 8.45 and nowhere near the furthest point yet; and still a picnic to enjoy. Let’s press on and stop for a picnic at the highest point where the frost is forming. My Chinese friend talks of “unwisdom” The picanic was broken out with pies and a range of single malts keeping the spirits up before another chilly plunge down to Burntcliff Top and then dropping down the lanes to the Alpaca bridleway which is a fun drop down to the river and a less fun push back up, but it leads onto the Hawks Nest track which leads onto Three Shires – not a problem almost half way. The long descent to the bridge gave everyone a good shaking up, but not as much as the realization that this might be the first no pub TNR; the plan to ride big and miss kitchen closing time didn’t consider riding so big we missed pub closing time.

The logic of desperate men – which is quicker, Cut Thorne or the field exit? – the reality, it doesn’t matter, they are both a long way from home! The field was chosen and after a push and a fight with the firmly fixed lambing gate we were back on the A54 and heading off for Cumberland Brook. As we peddled wearily back along Wildboarclough at 10.45 we worked through the list of pubs, all probably closed by now on a Thursday. Slim and your correspondent decided that there was no prospect of a snifter at this time of night and took the direct route north, leaving the southern chaps and the Poynton mafia to climb back over Standing Stone and head dejectedly for the fleshpots.

Yet lo ……….or other biblical phrases, a welcoming light yonder; the long forgotten St Dunstan’s welcoming weary travelers until 12am – as the sign says. Butty arrived home before 2am so all is well, mission success.
Next time ….?

Crew; El Pres, Stunt, Eric,

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Sutton, Meg Lane, Hanging Gate, over the top, Greenways Bridge, Clough Brook, Tagsclough, Eagle and Child, Cut-thorne, Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, LHS, Bob’s, Sutton Hall

Conditions; Dry at first, very very wet later!

Stats; El Pres – puncture

Offs; Non

Where is everybody? 6.45 and there were just three brave souls. But; a small posse, able to move with the speed and stealth of Ninja, deserves a route variation or two.

It started out cool and clear but little did we know what was ahead – Stunt hadn’t told us the bad news from his mobile weather station. Old legs were fully warmed up by the start of the first stealth section and they needed to be as the climb was just about on with lungs bursting at the top. The swooping green lane must have some stories to tell of travelers in days gone by but tonight there were just three orange flashes and darkness descended once more.

Unwisely we decided to tackle Clough Brook, up! Sadly this ancient byway has been totally destroyed by a***holes on motorbikes and 4x4s. It may not be illegal to drive it but the outcome is nothing short of wanton vandalism. Rant over we pushed through the thigh deep ruts, climbed to the A54 and headed over Tagsclough. The descent to the Eagle and Child is the right way to traverse this bit.

The original plan was to enter Three Shires by the Hawks Nest back door but as the rain started we headed for Cut-thorne instead. Now your correspondent cannot tell a lie, the decision was taken after taking the wrong road after a coat stop, but it turned out to be a prudent mistake as the conditions started to deteriorate rapidly. I’m not sure if it is all the wet weather or further unwanted attention of “motorists” but Cumberland Brook was feeling distinctly bumpy tonight.

3 Ninja were counted out at the top but only 2 were counted in at the bottom. Hmm dilemma, food orders to be placed and a wounded chum halfway up the track. F…m was considered but rejected as Stunt sprunt for the pub whilst I returned up the track at a more measured pace. By now it was pissing down and El Pres was battling a puncture – not the snakebite you would have expected but a nail, a nail halfway down Cumberland Brook for heaven’s sake. To make matters worse the Presidential Mountain Morph chose tonight to issue it’s last puff of breath.

The rain settled into a steady downpour as we headed back through Langley on one of those – “had enough now” nights. Fortunately Stunt had done a fine job as vanguard and we found him in Sutton Hall with smoking jacket on and warmth and sustenance awaiting.

Another late arrival home from Warrington , coupled with the discovery of a flat tyre as I opened up our garage, resulted in a late departure. So a slack route with photo opportunities was selected. Here are a couple of the results….

Route: BL, Tearooms, Goyt, Back of Erwood Hall, Pyms Chair, Blaze Hill, Poachers

Conditions: Cold & Dry, Trails still muddy

Stats: 1 Off (Pete), 2 Punctures (Chris L)

IMG_7226

Notes:

Whisper it….it’s not raining, blowing or freezing!!!

Slim on time shockert! ..a welcome return of Mr I and very welcome injection of youth with Chris crossing the America’s Lally, despite last minute brass nipple related delay (a portent of things to come?)

Loose plan to go high then decide on route vaguely north to bolly.

Dunc, Iron Legs Pres and young Chris set off up the road pace, leaving the rest of the chatting riders far behind very quickly.

By the layby past the speed camera sense had prevailed, lungs recovered and the group reformed.

Relief at the tearooms as despite grains of snow lying on the ground, its not frozen, stand down the ice alert! It is cold though, extra outer layers donned at the gates.

Time for a goyt descent – straight down until the left turn through the wall.

IMG_7223

Its slightly muddy, but mostly dry, and extremely rideable, probably better on the track than alongside too (which it rare).

Pausing at the gate, the skies have cleared, a 3/4 moon is bright, and orion looks down approvingly. Time for the trails into Errwood.

Wet and muddy in the usual places, but again extremely rideable. Still rocky & rooty once over the stream.

Time for some cognac laced black coffee (just because it’s a cold one). Moon shadows get Slim geeking off on big camera and lens thoughts 🙂

Time is getting on, any thoughts of uphill singletrack past the shrine are abandoned, so down over the waterbars towards the road.

This be where young Chris gets a front puncture..splinter group to ensure food ensures (which quickly turns into the front four everyman for himself to the poachers).

IMG_7230

Dunc discovers its light enough to ride uphill without lights. Its a long slog but the cold makes the hills almost a pleasure.

Great to have been high and big (a rarity this winter)

Stunt takes orders via whats app in the poachers (Dunc heroically checking out the vale as per the original plan)

Multiple punctures – wire induced? mean its a long time before the two Chris’s appear.

An evening of temperance, Butty straight onto a pot of tea, joined later by Stunt and Mr I (coffee) after a mass pudding to recoup the calories burnt in the cold.

Untitled

Prize for longest puncture repair to Chris L (spent most of the time in the pub working through patches).

Thoughts of warmer rides and lighter nights, plus snow reports and thoughts.

Sensible time home.

Thursday 11th February – Dan’s Birthday Ride.

IMG_7111

Words by Eric, Pics, and G&T by Pete

Crew; El Pres, Slim, Doog, Butty, TJ, Stunt, Dunc, Big Nick, Gee (with beard !), 3 Sheds, Croxy, Coley, Eric,

Route: BL, OBR, Zig sans Zag, Murderer’s entrance to Tegg’s, Leather’s, Concessionary B’way, Narnia backwards, Charity, Snickett, Standing Stone, Nessit, Middle descent, Leather’s again

Conditions; Dry at last, Mackintoshes not required.

Stats; Slim, minor chain faff

Offs; Non reported

Pete was right, we should remember Dan’s birthday, not the other; and so it was an appropriately large crew who gathered at BL tonight. (wholly Eric approved on this particular occasion)

It was a blessed relief to be riding without waterproofs although most people admitted to overestimating the cold and as a result we were sweating by the bottom of the zig. Part way along the zig Slim remarked to your correspondent that this was the very location where the Presidential chain had shuffled off it’s mortal coil only the other week when – b’doing, so did Slim’s. If you didn’t know you’d say we were being watched by mischief.

The descent from Teggs proved to be a little sketchy with front wheels following their own calling on the muddy bit at the bottom. An old rally driver friend of mine always used to say – “crash backwards, it hurts less”. A short stop was made at the Leathers to order food and then it was on up the long slog to the bridleway and the witch’s cottage. Here we had to let the traffic pass; gets busy on a Thursday evening these days, before crossing to Narnia. Not sure who thinks that walking up here is quicker and more fun than riding round the other way but walk we did. Back on Charity we had to wait for the traffic to pass before joining the route – gets busy on a Thursday evening these days.

IMG_7101

The snicket is now nicely washed out, almost back to where it was a few years ago. With time moving on faster than we were, it was every man for himself up to Nessit; sadly your correspondent, considering himself to be well placed mid pack took the scenic route only to find the rest of the crew assembled at the benches, Gin poured, ice and slice in, but anxiously awaiting the arrival of the tonic mule – oops sorry chaps. With all tonic used to the full, the gins still felt rather robust, with the second sliding down exceedingly easily – MARVELLOUS.

Soon thoughts turned to Katie and the girls, and to Dan and all the sunshine he brought to us and to the rest of the world.

Then it was time to go.

Some reported the ensuing downhill went very smoothly – others simply reported “what downhill”

Very soon we in our spiritual home in the Leathers, with the usual cheery banter; Dan would not have wanted it to be any different.

Crew; Butty, Dunc (for a brief while) , El Pres, Coley, 3 Sheds, Mr Incredible
Pub; Dunc returns

Route; BL, Zig Zags, Old Buxton Rd Track, Chazza and Extension, Standing Stone , Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Colder and Wetter than the instrumentation predicted !

Stats; El Pres Chain Snap, Zero arms on the presedential reading specs

Offs; None observed

TNR 3-2-2016 Just 'Orrible

Notes :

I have a weather app on my iPhone. Up till now I have considered it the “dogs doo dahs” accurate forecast of how cold and wet down to a matter of minutes. This time it was predicting a 3% chance of precipitation in the hours of our riding…. I learnt to regret trusting this forecast from the ascent of Charity onwards …by forest chapel we had decided this damp wet white stuff is getting us far too wet….and figurative Bugle of defeat was sounded, the cry went out “retreat” and “everyman for himself” …and we abandoned to Sutton Hall.

Meanwhile..Dunc had disappeared of to join “the Dukes” and returned late on to Sutton Hall with tales of achieving Three Shires.

It soon became “Leffe O’clock” at Sutton Hall for quite a few of us….apart from an unusually temperate Butty

Thursday 28th January – Nessit the Hard Way (with apologies to Chris Bonnington).

TNR 28-01-2016

Words by Eric, Pic by Dunc

Crew; Dunc, Bernard, Eric.

Route: BL, New Buxton Road, sneaky wood, Windyways, Saddler’s Way, Hardingland, Witches Cottage, reverse Narnia, lower Charity, snicket, Nessit, central downhill, Bob’s bench, Gurnett, canal, Middlewood Way, Lord Clyde

Conditions; Windy but unexpectedly dry.

Stats; Eric, knotted chain

Offs; Non reported

With hurricane Gertrude, or whatever the Met Office is choosing to call wintery weather these days, forecast to bring chaos to the UK tonight we set off dressed for the worst. When we say “we”, we mean the three less than wise men who turned up. For the rest, the lure of après ski or a warm sitting room was too much.

Small Events Bernard (SEB) arrived on his son’s bike as when he unearthed his own it had flat tyres. Choosing a sheltered route we headed up NBR and into the sneaky wood. Followers of the turf would have described the going as soft to un-rideable, we preferred un-rideable with additional adjectives. The route by Windyways gave fabulous views to the west and a stiff push into the teeth of Gertrude.

The big rocks at the top of Saddler’s were slipperier than usual but Duncan lead the way, solid forks no hindrance to superheroes. As ever Hardingland proved to be the macho challenge of the evening with everyone gasping at the top. Performance was hindered by being overdressed in waterproofs and boil in the bag trousers; with sweat pouring we realized that in the words of Monty Python “the weather man was lyin”. We could have got away with jerseys. The next climb was reverse Narnia which had the added challenge of avoiding crazy mountain bikers descending – whatever next.

We stopped at the shots bench for a very pleasant drop of Glensomethingorother from Duncan’s hip flask. There’s something special about an outdoor snifter with good mates on a wild and wintery night. Exiting Narnia we joined the stream of traffic going down the lower end of Charity. SEB was pleased to reach the bottom of the snicket without drama.

Not that it was a race but it felt good to catch and pass another group on Nessit. On the central descent your correspondent found that his pedals no longer went round. Further investigation revealed a chain resembling a Christmas cracker puzzle which was difficult to untangle and more difficult to understand how it happened.

Back down to Gurnett and onto the canal for a sprint to the Middlewood Way and on to the Lord Clyde. SEB had opted for an early bath; it wasn’t that we had opted for a Bernard unfriendly hostelry!

We were made welcome in the newly refreshed hostelry although our food needs didn’t trouble celebrity kitchen; a bag of crisps complimenting Old Speckled Hens

Stats; El Pres – mythical puncture

Offs; None

Notes :
A small turn out of “the Regulars” was supplemented by our guest stars : Bernard and Chris.

The leadership vacuum was quickly filled by Butty and he set us off on an innovative route up to “Dale Top” and an innovative one down again 🙂

Full marks for those that sat in the saddle all the way up.

It was breezy on the tops but the views were crystal clear .

IMG_6989

Filled with such wonder at the Cheshire nighttime spectacle , we felt a need to pay homage and give thanks to our creator 😉 …so Butty led us on the Chapel exit route from Moorside Lane.
By the end of Long Lane our new found goodness was on the wane , and from Beeston Brow we descending to the fulcrum of the Fleshpots of Bollingtonia : The Poachers.

It was here that we discovered that Young Chris L could be considered a bit of a ringer – he has recently returned from a cycle tour of the length of North and South America !
