TNR 9th June 2016 : A long way to flow – but worth it !

TNR 9th June 2016

Words by: committee, edits by Pete
Pics: Butty

Crew: Butty, Dunked, El Pres, PTD, MRI.
Stats : Sheep in a bush
Route : Sutton gamekeepers meet. Ryles food order. Barlow Hill. Swythamley, Under hanging stone, Back forest ridge. Hanging stones. Sneaky footpath to Dan bridge.
Conditions: lovely

El pres is globalising; original meeting point of Ptd home was changed to the lamb Sutton. Paul seemed to be keeping us away from his homestead. Perhaps Emma wasn’t pleased that we have had his pleasure for the last three weeks. Or perhaps he’s just a nice considerate guy.

Tight unit made good progress up to back forest. Techie climbing tested all riders with a few dabs and pushes.

TNR 9th June 2016 Some "men" padded up while funkydunk disappeared into the distance on his rigid. Dry exciting flowing ridge ride with much rock dodging. Memories of a great picnic with Dan came flooding back when reaching the hanging rock - "we must have a G&T as first drink in Dan's honour".

Down to sneaky naughty footpath passing close to farmstead. "No talking, keep tight" was the instruction but several of us were hardly in stealth mode with day glow shorts and sweet clicking hubs by Syntace & Hope.

TNR 9th June 2016

Ptd's cheeky route had north shore, roots, rocks and steep interesting sections coming out at river "Dan". Instantly recognised by the rest of the group with an "Ahh - this is were it comes out". Bit of trail maintenance to clear the way for future expeditions and a rather ambitious step chute.

TNR 9th June 2016

Road slog had Butty bonking. - Too much riding during this fine weather period!

Arrival at Ryles was inviting with the promised G&T toast to Marvellous Dan, greyhound skirts, good rump and great food.

Talk of justice, breast feeding, manhood enhancement and no mention of tyres or forks.

Very busy pub was suddenly empty by 10.30 and all ours. Perhaps we upset someone ?

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, 3 Sheds, Mr I, G, Dunc, Butty, Stunt

Strick Towers: Joe

Route: Strick Towers, Tythy snicket, middlewood way, bolly steps, bakestonedale road, layby ascent of sponds hill, beaver creek, moorside lane, watersplash, birchencliffe, brickworks, stypersons, middlewood, Strick Towers.

Conditions: Sunny, dry, cool wind, a bit buggy.

Stats: 1 puncture (pete), 1 tubless loss of seal (butty)

Notes:

An evening chez Stunt is planned and it seems appropriate to start the ride here, the weather behaves, Pete arrives first!

IMG_7932

Proud of his new thompson uppy downy seatpost, Pete asks for help in diagnosing the play, and creaking sound…its the sound of doom as matching cracks in the top of the seatpost tube are not as Pete says “just in the paint”, the expert engineering eye of 3 Sheds condemn’s it instantly (although no hazard tape is produced). Deep sighing, but it is pronounced fit for a last ride amidst frame warranty debate and mental arithmetic.

The good weather brings out PTD’s dayglo Patriot, Dunc’s dusty full bounce, and Butty’s slightly lighter than planned Liteville (the onboard allen key still awaits finding on shining tor).

Route plan to make the most of the dry weather, and be Tythy friendly, turns into a loop of Sponds with a return via Stypersons. Even the much maligned middlewood way is dry, but progress slows on the climb out of Bolly as Pete bounces off a kerb before stopping to sort a slow puncture. Tricksy thorns, road morph foot flap breaks off..its really not his night for his equipment reaching end of life from fatigue failures!

IMG_7949

Reunited at the layby, Butty has been faffing  with a burping tyre, but is not completely satisfied. Enough time has been lost and its up the diagonal climb. Butty’s tyre gives up halfway, and the refreshment stop it taken early as a tube is fitted (amist much cursing of Stan the man!).

PTD has excelled himself..learning from the feedback of a few months earlier, the dark green one has been perfected, hints of oranges, a smooth feel and nice glow on the way down (ingredients seem too many to mention, but this one is good) it needs a name…sheep poo goo is appropriate given where we are, but British Racing Green sounds much better 🙂

Version 2

Faffing finally over, and coats on due to the chilly breeze, up to the top, along the ridge and down the lumpy but flowing beaver creek (with optional big air jump). Speed down to moorside lane, regroup whizz down the water splash into almost blinding low evening sun, sneaky grass descent, and short slog up to sypersons.

Bermy, jumpy hooning ensues.

IMG_7955

Stunt and Pete make an advance party to Strick towers (one to get the rice on , the other not risking the strain on the frame). Joe has arrived early – the joys of footpath shortcuts 🙂

40 beers in the fridge, chilli in the slow cooker, rice bubbling, and Mr I introduces us to a starter of fish tacho’s (which are so good we do round 2 immediately).  Conversation flows, beer disappears, food is served, and music is played..becoming an impromptu game of name that tune, and random association/nostalgia. Its very eclectic and a lot of fun.

IMG_7926

Tales of offroad coast to coast tandeming before PTD breaks a golden rule of never discuss politics or religion by managing to mention “that” referendum, G provides plenty of examples of why being the boss is not always fun, but we manage to escape into more familiar territory with the education of Joe into retro music and tv themes.

the evening grows late, we bid farewell to the consciensous, and say Hello to the 12 yr old whisky and You Tube on the TV (what could possibly go wrong…well lines were blurred…:-)

IMG_7960

The Axis of Evil finally burns out in the wee hours, a very successful format!

TNR 26-5-2016 Taxing Climbs

TNR 26-05-2016

Crew: Butty, Mr I, El Pres, Coley, Stunt

Pub: Slim, Dunc, Nic & El Pud

Route: Rainbow bridge, Middlewood way into Bolly, Up past the poachers, Blaze Hill, Pike Rd, Bank Lane (aka the corkscrew), Jenkin Chapel, Pym Chair, Singletrack to Wingather Rocks, Taxal Edge, Kettleshulme, Moorside (now high peak school), Mudhurst lane, Bowstones, Sponds Hill, Bakestonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Poachers.

Conditions: Mild, Cloudy, Buggy, Damp trails

Notes:

Another night of previous weather – this time it clears well in advance, so El Pres posts a large route, which leads to some folk being suitably late enough to miss the ride 😉

Plan is modified almost immediately as the troll is a little behind schedule having parked up in Bolly.

He is finally located near Grimshaw lane, so the best way to Pym’s chair is straight up..Blaze Hill!

On the way we come across the mystery of the disappearing canal.

It’s a slog all the way up, but we are making good time. Onto bank lane and a close encounter with a buzzing buzzard, then big puddles. Corkscrew is damp but not silly, and big Hare hops across our path on the way to Jenkin Chapel.

More slog

Singletrack is damp and muddy in places, but excellent as ever. Cuckoo singing clearly at the top (it must be late summer!)

Climbers tackling wingather, we admire the view before heading down the field (wet grass making local rain in our faces!), slithery down and up through the woods. Taxal edge moist but again running well.

No rest for the wicked, drop into Kettleshulme, and through the lanes over the river and up again for more slog.

Off road at the smart cottages, push up after the gate past the gently rusting nissan cabstar, then spinning past watchful flocks to the moorside, and tired legs desperate to get to the top of the “always longer than it should be” mudhurst lane.

Up and downs across the tops, and top gear challenge sees us split into three…El Pres on the diagonal to the layby, while the rest head higher over the fence and along the wall, where at the corner Butty and Mr I head over into Bagers Creek, whilst Stunt and Coley do the quarry descent.

Quarry wins, and it’s been an impressive pace all evening as poachers is reached at 9:10pm after 2,700 ft of climbing.

The first pints don’t touch the sides, and food is eagerly anticipated. Slim arrives for his gammon steak, with Dunc and Nic not long after. Then EL PUD spotted on TNR shocker! fresh from that there Landan Taan, and now drinking white wine, he simulaneously manages to drive thought provoking conundrums, and lower the tone severely at the same time.

Conversation turns rowdy, and the night gets late. Axis of evil is narrowly avoided.

A proper TNR 🙂

TNR 19-5-2016 No Risk of Fire!

IMG_7814

words by Alex, Pics by Pete
Crew: El Pres, PTD, Dunc, Bernard, Slim, Stunt

Route: BL, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, LH side, RH side, LH side, rezzies, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Cool, windy, hill fog, lots of surface water.

Notes:

An afternoon of steady and heavy rain = flurry of excuses and opter outers despite optimistic noises from resident weather geek stunt.

..who is proved right when assembling at BL pink tinged clouds herald the end of the rain!

Slightly prolonged wait for those who were lingering over their tea before venturing out (you know who you are!)

IMG_7821

Big events Bern shows the spirit by turning up anyway “because I had nothing better to do tonight” 🙂

Route logic is wet roads = no motorbikes, so go high and do rocky trails.

It started well….Bern asked to treat him lightly as he’s not that fit (then preceded to shoot off the front never to be caught!), rain had cleared most of the muck from the roads, and traffic indeed light.

Low cloud loomed beyond the average speed cameras, and wind rose, oscillating between help and hindrance. Crows wheeled and soggy lambs gambolled and scattered as riders passed. Into the murk, cold, visibility 20m, rear lights on, grinding climb.

Huddling out of the wind at the side of the Cat we get pictures of sunny european cities (thanks Eric!), extra layers are donned, and we chat until Slim finally arrives. Time to move straight away to get warm again.

Lucky we are mostly in full waterproofs – as danebower is covered in deep puddles, and the channel to the side is almost full of gurgling rainwater. Wet shoes.com (hopefully waterproof socks or shoes?) not the best for Berns white trainers.

Dim too, some front lights tried, spirits are low, Stunt says we’ll be out of the cloud on the other side, Harrumps suggest grumpy crew are in no mood to be cheered up.

Puddles eventually subside, it gets brighter – we ride faster, then lo out of the cloud 100m from the end! That chap is right again (even if it is still a grim evening for May!!)

Pressing on to Chumby, the beginnings of smiles as the new signs warning of fire risk seem absurdly optimistic 🙂

Suprisingly the descent is no damper than normal – apart from the big stream and impressive waterfall. PTD mocks Dunc about his ability to descend at speed on his Rigid “wet bike”, and is then put in his place by big wheeled bravado! Legend of the long legged sheep nearly born (until we realise its dragging its shedding fleece behind it) the Cumberland sheep were looking especially scraggy – is there a sheep farmer shaming website?

IMG_7827

Quick replacement of cable tie to rear mudguard at the bottom, the chill air is left behind, and morale is rising.

Time to inspect the support walling going on at the bottom of the closed lane to standing stone, and some cheeky use of signage at the top!

IMG_7826

Fast descending on the LHS, then over the road, back across and along through the woods – Dunc and Stunt lead grin induced thrash with some leapfrogging rivalry. Into Sutton hall without the need for lights 🙂

An even split between the Plum Porter and the Lighter ales, and we are waited on hand and foot by a new and impressive barstaff. Just as well, as its been a hard old ride. Tales of the spanish adventures, and ideas for rides further afield are hatched. Bern does pudding, before its home time for well deserved zeds.

IMG_7831

TNR 12-5-2016 Campfire Curry

IMG_7780

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Dunc, TJ, Butty, 3 Sheds, Mr I, Stunt.

Route: BL,Old road & full Zig Zags, Teggs from the top, White rabbit ascent to almost Nessit, foresty furtlings left hand side to join up with son of dentists descent. Up the road past the rangers station, left hand side ascent and up the steps, dentists descent, forest chapel, reverse chazza, usual spot.

Conditions: Warm and sunny, quite breezy, dusty dry trails, cold later.

Notes:

Critical mass this week, and weather still holding summery sunshine, so campfire protocols invoked 🙂

El Pres (and the ever amazing Charlotte) run the Curry and Beer logistics, Butty does routemastering, and the rest follow.

We are warned of the dangers of riding the wrong way up one way streets before we start…prophetic words (or possibly a conspiracy) as a yellow JCB careers round the corner as we head out!

IMG_7734

All is well with the world when you can ride in short sleeves and shorts all evening (especially 2 weeks after snow!) and even a grumpy walker cannot dampen our spirits.

There does seem to be a lot of climbing, and some of us are not used to loose dry conditions (some are just back from training in exactly that!). Luckily no dabs reported.

IMG_7739

Conditions under the forest canopy are as good as you can get, and sunlight through the trees gets slim all excited!

Dentists descent has seen better days – but it was worth an explore, top gear challenge to forest chapel sees the road lose out to the rocky steps!

IMG_7741

Stunt delivers on one match ingition, victuals delivered as promised 🙂

Early season benefits are short grass, no midges (although the stiff breeze may also have helped), the bigger bits of wood are fairly damp – so its a smoky affair.

IMG_7778

Despite a hard ride – we are beaten by the curry quantity, and fears of a lager shortage are unfounded.

Jupiter, Mars and ISS all spotted, world set to rights, and a tale of the strangely stretched tyre.

IMG_7746

Cold winds and the need to properly douse the fire mean it’s not too late a night.

Warm winds overnight reported by many 😉

TNR 5-5-2016 Wonky Tyres and Hooning

IMG_7621

Words and Pics by Slim

Crew : Slim, Kersh, Dunc, 3sheds and Coley

Route: RB – Redway Tavern route – Waulkmill Wood – flagstones route to Rainow – Smith Lane – the Cheshire Corkscrew – Pymm’s chair ascent from Jenkin Chapel – Windgather /Taxal Edge – Kettleshulme – Bakestonedale Rd – Pott Shrigley – The Poachers

Conditions : warm & dry, slightly cloudy

Stats : one wonky tyre for Dunc

Notes :
With a hard core of the regulars off to Spain, those of us keeping the British End up celebrated the better weather by “Going Large”.

It was Dunc’s idea, as he volunteered to be our route planner and ops manager this week. It was to be a stark contrast to last week’s placebo of a ride .Even Mr K joined us this week.

IMG_7618

After Waulkmill Wood descent Dunc led us over the paved path which spans the fields to Rainow. As the path reaches Rainow it skirts a house…where the residents and their curious pooch greeted us with smiles and good humour ..we had anticipated “gerroff my laaannd”.

The climb up Smith Lane is never easy. Our reward was the descent of a surprisingly rideable “Cheshire corkscrew ”
The slog up to Pym’s chair is…well just a slog. Your correspondent was reduced to “tacking” for a good proportion of the climb. I believe there may have been mutterings from Mr Ball

IMG_7622

Once at the top it was noticeably cooler..so extra layers were donned and the “hooning” to Taxal commenced.

It was not long before our Ops Manager’s hooning was brought to an abrupt halt by a suddenly distorted rear tyre.

IMG_7633

The steed was upended. The crew gathered around the patient for a diagnosis.
Fortunately Dunc remained sufficiently in control of proceedings to prevent a Kershaw Kill or Cure mending approach, and the vicinity was mercifully lacking any large rocks or bits of tree :-).
Science prevailed and we were soon hooning Taxalwards again.

IMG_7626

All that hoon has to be paid for …The final slog up from Kettleshulme dip to Bakestonedale Rd was a grin-and-bear-it affair …but its always good to crest the top knowing its all down hill to The Poachers (more or less) .

IMG_7635

Dunc had pre-ordered nosh from a mid-hoon halt (before the last walled section to Taxal) …this meant we could arrive at 9.30 and have huge platefuls of monster Chicken and chorizo pie plonked down in front us. God was definitely in his heaven.

Good to exit pub and it be still quite mild

TNR 28-04-2016 Hail of the North

IMG_7573

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete & TJ

Crew: El Pres, Slim, TJ, Mr I, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: Rainbow bridge, Endon House, Lidgetts Lane, Kerridge Ridge, Poachers Snicket, Oakenbank, Robin Hood.

Conditions: Very Cold, Hail, Huge amounts of surface water.

Notes:

“Sometimes it snows in April” goes the song, well forgive me for profanities, but as Yoda might say, very cold all month it has…. almost May and this is getting silly!!! Forecast for this week is apocalyptic, heavy rain and northerly icy winds with temperatures only marginally above freezing. Activity on the chat group is low, rain radar is obsessively checked, and only the most optimistic of the team are keeping the ride alive!

Stunt cuts the mustard (literally) with pies and brandy laced coffee to tempt out company. Excuses fly thick and fast, Troll mans up, a northern standard is raised at Rainbow Bridge and we assemble in full winter gear and waterproofs as the two hour deluge finally passes and the sun breaks through in blue skies.

This is no fairytale, as more weather is expected, and with sodden trails its time for a shorter route with liberal bail out options. Temperatures are not rising, and there is only a very modest de layering on the climb to the Lidgetts gate.

TNR 28-04-2016

Pete records the gentle returning of the old gate into the landscape. Kerridge mud is a weird mix of greasy top on hard dried ruts. The lung busting ride to the first gate to the top is very doable (assuming lungs, legs and greasy patches/slippy roots don’t trigger a dab). Conversation is a bit stilted until we recover, then find the gate has shrunk – breathing in required to get round (not a middle aged spread issue – it really was very tight honest!!)

IMG_7569

Its been a good call going up to the top – great views of incoming weather, a pair of red kites (or possibly very big kestrels), glimpses of white topped hills, and silhouetted horizons.

TNR 28-04-2016

Grass is damp but not too slippy, lots of upper body training over the kissing gates, there is white stuff under dark clouds not too far away, but wind direction is a bit shifty, keep on moving along to White Nancy.

Time for a celebratory stop, and care is needed not to lose the cups and condiment in the wind. Hot caffiene and alcohol is very warming 🙂

IMG_7594

In a case of weird TNR symmetry the Nancies pass by at Nancy, many on rather nice Crossers, inform us that its the cricket club quiz at the poachers (so best avoided), then head manfully strait down the steep bits.

Untitled

The weather is approaching fast, pies and drink are gulped down, a Robin hood plan is hatched, layers re donned, and we slither down to the track as the horizontal hail comes in.

IMG_7597

Snicket is extremely wet with a humungus puddle at the top. Heads are down on the steep approach to Oakenbank, but lift as the clouds lift and the setting sun pops back up and pretends that nothing has happened.

Hills are now whitish at much lower levels, we are glad of the incline to keep warm, and El Pres finds his beer legs to “ensure we get food”.

Crackling fire, leather chairs, fresh steak and ale pie straight from the oven, and wainwrights on tap Hmmm this is fast becoming our new favourite pub 🙂

Old photos, tales of axe murderers being ambushed sweeny style on the wall (truth definitely stranger than fiction!), and an impressive entrance by Dunc in work regalia on crosser (if being dressed like james may in flowery shirt over jeans = work regalia). All to the good, and conversation floweth along with the beer.

IMG_7610

A steady trickle of clientele inform us its snowing outside, and eventually there is nothing more to be done but head out and face it. Two take on oakenbank, the rest are down the road into blizzard like conditions, big wet icy flakes stinging faces, making helmet mounted lights useless, and blurring glasses at all the wrong points. Nasty it is!

Untitled

By Chinese corner on hurdsfield it has become rain, Dunc has headed off to minimise his time with wet denim, and even in fully waterproofs its cold.

Please sir can we have some early summer next week? (the wise ones are heading to Spain just in case!!)

Thursday 21st April – Go big or go to the pub?

IMG_7552

Words by Eric, Pics by Pete

Crew; El Pres, Mr I, Stunt, Young Chris, Dunc, Butty, Gee, TJ, Eric, 3 Sheds, Coley, Croxy

Making his own way : Slim

In the pub; PtD

Route: BL, NBR, Charity and extension, Stanley Arms, Cat, Danebower, 3 Shires option, CutThorne, Cumberland Brook, Wildboarclough, Standing Stone, RHS, LHS, Bob’s, Sutton Hall.

Conditions; Dry, amazingly dry, like it used to be in the old days.

Offs and stats; Your correspondent.

A big group assembled and with the big group came big ambitions for Three Shires and so we set off with a will. (apologies to Stanley Holloway). What seemed like a relatively wind free evening in the confines of BL started to change as we climbed, the weather man obviously fibbing again.
After the months of moist misery it was marvelous to make a dry descent of Charity, not quite dust but not far off and in the daylight to boot.
The long slog up from the Stanley Arms was slightly wind assisted and it felt as though there might have been a slight element of competition breaking out, either that or everyone was trying to keep up with Chris as he effortlessly drifted off up the climb – B*****y Yoofs !!! The climb might have been tough on us but not as tough as the descent was on the poor unfortunate who had parked his new hatchback at the bottom of the ravine.
The late starting 3 sheds appeared as we were regrouping.

It might have been spring but the seasons don’t often change at the Cat and it was on with a layer or two before the charge down Danebower. Again it was wonderfully dry and a great little local chase broke out with Stunt in the lead, closely followed by your correspondent, with Coley inches behind. We were a bunch of old blokes pedaling frantically like kids on the BMX track, all worldly worries lost in the thrill of the chase, heartbeat in the red and huge with huge grins. I hope we can still do it on e-bikes and then mobility scooters!

IMG_7522

It was starting to feel a bit like beer o’clock and some decided to head back to the fleshpots, but we’d set out for Three Shires and Three Shires was where we were going. The drop across the field although dry was more bumpy than ever; almost as if the farmer had taken to keeping Bison rather than cows. By the way do you know the difference between a Buffalo and a Bison? – y’can’t wash yer hands in a buffalo.

IMG_7541

Three Shires has long been known to be a place of mystery and strange goings on, with people doing odd things – not sure if we can put our behaviors down to that. Firstly TJ became lost although he was standing on the bridge with the rest of us; then Butty realized that he hadn’t forgotten his water, just forgotten to turn on the Camelback valve, but then he became more flustered when he realized that he really had forgotten his biscuit.
We decided it was time to go before further bewilderment set in. The climb up to CutThorne was enticingly almost cleanable and at the top everyone had a tale of “nearly” and “if only” Darkness fell as we headed on over Cumberland Brook although there was a certain irony in the proprietor of well known bicycle lighting emporium descending the last section to the gate “sans lumes”

Just as tired legs were starting to complain a little things got decidedly better with a tailwind pushing up to Standing Stone and a dry dab free descent of the RHS – perfect. A final swoop around the LHS and past Bobs and we were cruising down to Sutton Hall. Job done
The vanguard had already eaten by the time we arrived but they had left some beer in the tank so all is well that ends well.

IMG_7555

TNR 14-4-2016 Oakenbank Three Times!

IMG_7520

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete
Crew: Slim, Butty, TJ, Mr I, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Ecton Av & snickets across to Rainow Road, Well Lane up to Kerridge, Lower track across back of the ridge and back to Rainow Road, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road, Moorside lane, Quarry climb, “Badger’s Creek” descent back to the Bakestonedale layby, retrace back to Oakenbank & Robin Hood Rainow.

Conditions: Dry, Mild with a cool breeze, Muddy patches in places

Stats: TJ Puncture

Notes:

Small crew this week, with a Presidential ceremonial send off (even if he couldn’t ride)

More helmet mounted lightweight lightage from TJ fitted (eventually) to Slim’s luminous looking lid.

Banter eventually subsides and with a Tythy friendly finish and a “not a long ride because I can’t afford to have 7 pints and only get home at 1am” erm logic??! from Slim, Butty has the beginnings of a plan so we get started.

We manage to find our way across to Rainow road, and then enjoy spring in the air on the quiter lanes, Lambs gambolling, leaves bursting, buds budding, birds calling, buzzards soaring, crows mobbing, bunnies bouncing, sunshine white clouds (its been a long time coming!)

IMG_7516

Mysterious red post spotted on a fence on the way up lidgetts lane, back of Kerridge not as sloppy as feared, but plently of squishy damp mud though but nothing wheelstopping. Sticky enough to turn into face covering chads as soon as we are back on the road descending at high speed!

Butty evolves the plan at the Robin Hood, food is pre ordered for 9pm

IMG_3628

Oakenbank delivers stunning setting sun sillouhetting white nancy, and a dry fast descent 🙂

Time check suggests we can do a quick up and down, what is this Badgers Creek butty is so keen to revisit?

Regrouping at the moorside lane entry we soon have a split group as TJ has a punture, so Slim stops to help and the rest take on the evil grassy rocky climb alongside the quarry into a stiff breeze and setting sun.

Some pushing is involved, and lungs are give a thorough work out, over the stile and Badgers creek is a diagonal descent past the mine monument back to the layby – flows nicely, and less scary than it looks to the uninitiated. Not a badger or creek in sight though!?

Time to get a move on – warp speeds reached descending into Pott Shrigley, and a good pace back up oakenbank. The short steep descents with way around are slightly spoiled by 50 yards of slippery slop in the dusk which need care and reduced speed to safely negotiate.

IMG_7521

Nice new decking at the back of the Robin Hood makes a smart bike stack, and we’re liking what they have done to the place! Plum porter is very fine, lamb hotpots extremely good, and we must come back here more often.

Stunt is called away early – so can’t vouch for whether Slim managed to avoid an evil axis, but one thig is for sure, Butty did Oakenbank three times by the time he got home!

IMG_7517

TNR Thursday 7th April 2016 : Still waiting for Slim !.

words by Eric
Crew; El Pres, Dunc, BEB, Gee, PtD, TJ, Eric,

In the pub; Slim eventually

Route: BL, zig zags, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, Leathers, White Rabbit ascent, Dan’s bench, Central descent, variations, Bob’s bench, Leathers.

Conditions; Dry and cold after rain Noah would have been proud of

Offs and stats; None reported.

The evenings general concensus was “let’s go light” with several of our number carrying post skiing aches and pains. It’s a tough life if you can get it. Further comms from Slim “I’ll definitely be there this week” – “Missed the train by 1 minute” – “I’ll catch you up”.

Gee made a welcome return (get it) after his end of financial year battles last week and BEB made his second appearance in two weeks, now claiming “regular” status. The pair set a brisk pace up towards the zig zags although BEB did know the way on this bit. At each regroup tales of daring do on the playground pistes of Europe threatened to hijack the ride and it was a divil of a leadership job to keep people moving on. But move on we did. Charity felt extra special rocky and river-like after the rain but it was nice to do some descending in the daylight again. After years of ex roadie hardtail only thinking Dunc seemed to be enjoying the experience on the bouncing Kona

More tree clearance has made Narnia feel very un-Narnia like but it does open out the views. Not to everyone’s taste but not everyone is a fan of conifers either. Thursday nights still seem very popular in the forest and there was a veritable traffic queue on the climb out of the stream at the bottom of Hardingland – no pressure to get up without pushing then!

Further comms from 10 minutes (AKA Slim) – “I’m on my way – prefer a Bollington finish; let me know which pub” – easy The Leathers – we’ve just ordered food.

The second loop was up the white rabbit climb to Dan’s bench. After years of ex roadie hardtail only thinking Dunc didn’t seem to be enjoying the experience on the 1 x 10 speed bouncing Kona! It has to be said that Dan’s bench has the finest views especially as the last glimmers of daylight were fading in the west. Descent via the centre of the downhill course was the order of the day followed by a bit of duathlon, and LHS. A quick loop round Bob’s and we were back at the Leathers.

The food was on the table before the first pint was finished – but where was Slim; – more comms – “I’ll be there in 10 minutes”. 30 minutes later……….lights in the yard, gammon out of the warmer and beer on the table. We settled in front of the fire and the conversation re-turned to the snows and après ski of Europe, where is Thornton when the conversation gets too up market?

.
