TNR 15-9-2016 Tropical Three

Crew: 3 Sheds, Bern, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Zig, Teggs,  snicket, Crooked Yard Road, Charity Lane, Narnia, Hardingland, Lower track, Smithy

Conditions: Tropical, misty higher up, Some big puddles and washed out trail sections.

Notes: After last weeks new term full turnout, the skiving has started (although accompanied by multiple notes of legitimate excuses)

To save the pride of TNR, big events Bern makes a special effort, and with 3 sheds its not just a solo or duo affair.

Evening skies are worth the sweat of the climbs, layers of steamy haze smother the plain set against a clear sky and reddening sun.

Teggs is very dry, then to the loud hoots of early owls, we venture into the jungle like snicket to see if it is passable. Trail is better than expected, although we come across an aggressive native who is unimpressed by our presence and after a good argument! Diplomacy failed and there was a “full and frank” exchange of views with one of our number. 🙁

Unscathed but debating the need for updating of 150 year old horse vs pedestrian logic its another slog up.

Lights on up charity, a lot of fresh stones and soil have been washed onto it from Tuesdays storm, into which deep gulleys have been cut, all rideable, but a bit edgy!

Narnia damp but not muddy, lower gravel section badly washed out.

Fresh logging by Witches cottage, Hardlingland seemingly unaffected by the rain, Badger startled at the watersplash, but no one made the steep ascent (we blame the badger!!)

A final loop of the lower forest abandoned in favour of ensuring food (and replacing fluids!)

Wild boar wellington was excellent, the Road to Rio pale ale slightly sweet but very quaffable.

The smallest TNR bill ever and an early night after a ride home in 17 degrees!!

TNR 18-8-2016 Doog delivers again!

Words by Alex, Pics by Slim

Crew: PTD,Dr Simon, EL Pres, Salad dodger, Troll, Butty, TJ, G, Dunc, Croxy, Stunt

Chef de mission: Doog

Route: BL, zig zags, charity lane, Butty’s singletrack to Narnia, back to charity, extension, standing stone, Nessitt hill, various routes to Standing stone for Pizza Collection, new al fresco spot.

Conditions: Sunny and warm, dusty dry trails, windy later

Stats: Punctures 3 (2 for G, one for Stunt), Offs El Pres.

Notes:

Doog and El pres hatch an al fresco plan…and the weather holds 🙂

IMG_0360

Much debate about a new campfire spot, Butty impresses with mappage and Ferriser nameage! Midgy worries continue the debate..

Stunt shows the new Plus bike and triggers tyre pressure geekery

Fairly classic route, the climbs are hot and the descents are loose!

G manages to get a rear puncture in the butty singletrack – midge exposure early while he fixes it.

Threeway split at Nessit under a superb setting sun – A team follow PTD for maximum riding, B team take a slightly shorter route, and C team head to set up camp.

IMG_0354

Midge debate becomes irrelevant as the wind picks up, and a most excellent spot is found complete with fire stones already in place and plentiful wood.

Stunt shows his inner scout and rustles up a double height ring of stones, and a healthy fire contained within.

Butty brings red wine & proper glasses (of the picnic and nice burning variety)

Doog spoils us with beer and pizza – a great combination.

Laughter and merriment, and plenty of warmth from the fire (no shortage of helpers putting more wood on!!)

IMG_0365

The sitting stones are a tad hard on the bum.

Moon shots later denied by flat battery on the big camera.

Eventually with all beer drunk, TJ’s brandy demolished, and the fire doused..time to head home..

Further excitement to come as some follow the Dangerous brothers down new cheeky tracks we spotted on the way in.

What could possibly go wrong?? (offs and punctures apparently)

IMG_0422

Others take more conventional routes – but water bars at speed lower down do for even the fattest of tyres, and Stunt manages to get as far as Sunderland street before giving in to reality (and finding out that the ex demo bike is not tubeless!)

Rumours of Salad Dodger walking home on the last hill

Home safe check in’s eventually complete when some of the most lubricated awake on sofas in the wee hours 😉

Another top evening, new territory to explore and a new favorite campfire spot 🙂

TNR 4th August 2016 : Glorious August

Words and pics by Slim

Crew : Slim, Butty, Troll, 3sheds, El Presidente

IMG_0164

En route additions : Coley & Son

Pub: Lord Kershaw of West Bollingtonia

IMG_0170

Route : RB – Middlewood Way – Lyme Park West Gate – Cheeky periphery circuit to the East exit – Bowstones Gate – Pott Shrigley – The Poachers

Stats : One slipping seatpost (Slim), one leaky front tyre (Butty)

Notes : the pictures will tell the tale for me this week.

IMG_0220

Despite the fact that we made Butty retrace his route to RB by heading back towards Lyme Park along the Middlewood Way , he did us proud. He guided us on an excellent set of tracks along the Northern edge of the park , and then out to the east and a pleasant climb to Bowstones.

We were caught by Coley and Son en route to Pott Shrigley , just when we were taking in the fantastic view to the west and the low light.

God was in his heaven

TNR 28-7-2016 Through the puddles

IMG_0097

Pics by Pete, Words by Alex

Crew: El Pres, Mr Incredible, Butty, Dunc, Stunt

Pub:  Slim

Route: BL, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, Forest Fire roads, Reservoir, Smithy

Conditions: Warm & Humid, much surface water.

Stats:  1 Mechanical (El Pres), 1 Faff (Butty)

Notes:

Another afternoon of rainfall radar brinksmanship…with a final deluge just before the off (and sufficient weather to see off 3 sheds)..but dry at 6:30.

Butty claims to be tired from a fast paced tuesday night ride, Dunc claims Not to be tired despite some impressive 40mile commutes!

El pres fills the route leader vacuum with “the classic” ..and the weather plays to our advantage by keeping the moto’s off the new road.

IMG_0094

Saddle talk whilst we wait for Dunc – poor state of El Pres’s (duct tape repair worn through), Butty faffs with his because “its poking him in the c**k”

It’s a different crowd instead, as Manchester Wheelers are running a time trial to the cat, complete with snazzy car (two tone stripes no less).

numbered riders whizz past downhill (warming up before the start) and we even get a nod or two!

We haven’t got very far before Butty calls a faff stop to re-adjust said saddle! (and sneaky extra air into Dunc’s rear tyre)

Heading up again, Butty is in the lead group, and Dunc falls off the back almost immediately..which just goes to prove that your legs may have different ideas to your head!

We are almost at the turn off for the rat run over the tops when the first time trialler comes past, ladies first number 3, which leaves us wondering where one and two are.

IMG_0106

Overtaken is the answer, as two comes past, then one..pedalling at a low cadence on a full TT machine passing us slowly (Dunc shouts appopriate roady encouragement). It doesn’t take long for someone to take the bait..and stunt chases all the way to the top keeping in touch to the final hairpin (moral victory?)

Wispy low cloud hangs over the forest, shining tor and the weather looks gloomy but not actually precipitatious.

Regrouped Danebower hollow is splashy but fun, Cumberland clough is greasy on the sides, and the brook is rather rocky (and running a river) with some added cow hazards lower down for the advance riders. Some spare vertebrae on show at the gate and circling buzzard suggest nature is lurking for the unwary!

El Pres suffers rear mech slackness at the bottom, forensic investigation swiftly concludes that it’s f****d! Extra strong cable tie to hold it in place is the right plan…but the first attempt leaves the loose end pinging in the spokes, and Chris manages to cut the whole tie off instead of trimming it back. Take two works, although leaving him in a comedy low gear for the flat 🙂

Another heron spotted standing still in the river, and up to standing stone.

Route cut short, El pres and Dunc head to the Smithy for early beer and to order food, the rest head left but choose a lower track instead of Nessit, and have fast gravelly fun with good views, and atmospheric mist and clouds.

IMG_0107

Good to be back at the leathers, Duchars slips down like water, Carol does us proud with puds after the kitchen staff bail out, Bilberry pie a TNR first? Slim shows off the new mirrorless compact proper camera, Stunt tells of new bikepacking bike bargain arriving in the morning, and conversation ranges widely (analysis of the evolution of sooty  to sweep to sue complete with hand movements anyone!)…and the Troll announces that his Leek hidehole may finally be ready for a TNR urban bivvy post a visit to the brew station!!!

Legend of the AI robots in the basement of the leathers is begun.

Very mild ride home

TNR 21-7-2016 Doog’s Backwoods BBQ

IMG_8080

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Dunc, Slim, Bernard, 3 Sheds, Stunt

BBQ: Doog, TJ, Adrian & Billy the Spaniel

Route: BL, novel up past the former Eric residence, Zig zags to Windyways, Charity Lane, Butty’s shortcut into Narnia, Hardingland, Langley Resevoirs, Smithy, Witches cottage, BBQ.

Conditions: some light drizzle early on, warm, dry trails

Notes:

Summer having finally arrived this week we optimistically plan for al fresco eating.

Doog takes charge for a traditional meaty feast, and despite a bit of weather to keep us on our toes, its all go for plan A.

Tis a very warm humid evening, and its not worth donning waterproofs (it’s almost comforting a hint of coolth)

Route is chosen for options, and starts with an unusual suggestion to head up Whitney Croft and climb off road.

Cheeky thoughts of having the BBQ on El Puds front lawn and sending him the pictures (another time!?)

IMG_8102

There are a lot of steps, but variety is good, and a heron is fishing in the upper pool. We also discover that one way signs are hard to spot (and blondes in 4×4’s = trouble)

By the time we get to windyways it’s pretty clear that it’s too humid for riding hard, and a single loop is the best plan.

Some lads on very clean bling bikes catch us at Butty’s shortcut, some admiring glances at a cotic rocket in the flesh (steel?!)

One does need to know where the shortcut goes to get the momentum for flow, but some fun in bombholes on sketchy pineneedles.

Two running ladies ask out help to find a pond at witches cottage (we think it might be the pool created on the fire road bend just lower down).

Hardingland dry and fast. Langley resssies very low (for maintenance we think), and three herons are making the most of shallow water (not so good for the fish).

It’s a long long drag up (helped by saying hi to Belgian Andy out walking his dogs), and the anticipation of fire, beer and food.

We set up in the bivvy spot as the grass is very long and very wet. Doog does us proud with a 4 meat feast plus baked potatoes, and beer/lager. The first tins disappear very quickly.

Strange tales of car driving up off road, and man with dog coming our way..turns out to be Adrian coming to join the fun. Billy the 4 month old cocker bitch is a big hit (especially with Butty and Ball) and is very well behaved given the food and fire combo. (she really likes chewing soft pine cones).

Food consumed, a small fire is created (just) on the bbq. With the shelter we are under it’s just right, not too smoky and banter ensues (much of which about whether fiat pandas will get back down in one piece!)

We are grateful for the car assist as it solves the rubbish logistics issue (bin bags that is!)

Responsible and biodegradable dousing – then homeward bound.

No car parts or oil slicks seen on the descent.

TNR 14-7-2016 Garish Garb

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Butty, TJ, G, Mr I, Eric, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Charity Lane, Bottom of the Oven, Tea Rooms, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cutting the corner to Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, Nessit Hill, Reservoirs, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Bright Skies, mild with a cool breeze higher up. Lots of water on the trails

Stats: Rear tyre burping from Butty

Notes: Better weather on a Thursday night, but fingers are firmly crossed for St Swithins day as its been a poor “summer” so far.

Annoyingly it is also bringing out the other Bikers, as the high pitched high revs are dopplering in the distance as route is discussed. Go high because we can, avoid new road as much as poss!

It has also triggered some “bright” clothing, Butty with dayglo orange shorts, TJ (fluoro as usual), and Stunt with the Jellybean top. PTD on the kermit five goes ninja black, and Mr I ignores fashion for the good old faded green sweatshirt!

G does his usual of being at the front and taking an alternative route – but only succeeds in giving himself a nice off road uphill challenge on the bridleway to windyways just to stay with the bunch.

Good views from the start of Charity – Shropshire hills clearly visible

Lots of running water on the downhill, and a salvage rear mudguard almost causes carnage by distracting butty at a critical moment on the extension. TJ gathers it whilst butty sorts his tyre out.

A strung out peloton means the early arrivers above the tea rooms get to watch the motorised brigade. The lotus super 7 was the best “bike” in our humble opinion.

Windproofs on, and plenty of comments for TJ’s latest see through aldi effort (mainly though we are just jealous of his chiselled torso which it shows off nicely!)

No time for a cheeky loop into the Goyt so straight up to the Cat and turn right.

No short eared owls spotted across the moors, one dead sheep on the short cut.

Lumpy and wet down Chumby, and butty Burps his tyre again getting air off the grassy jump after the gate.

Work all finished on the quiet lane to standing stone, and time for a full Nessit.

Quick stop at Dans bench, and a few lights on as its getting dark under the trees.

Someone’s been busy with chainsaws and a big digger – forest trails getting overly tamed?

The beer is calling, although G peels off as he’s being good!

Ursula Minor wins the battle of the pale ales, with Homeless lager making a few converts!

Mr I starts with a G&T (with it being summer and all!)

We finish with a special offer Whisky.

Mostly home before the witching hour!

TNR 7th July 2016 – I can see clearly now ….(the rain has gone)

IMG_6476

Words by Pete, Pics by Pete and Dunc

Crew: Slim

Pub : A good smattering of WNB, Dunc

Route: RB, Lidgetts, Messing around Kerridge Ridge, Waulkmill Wood, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Beeston Brow , The Poachers

Conditions: Brighter, no rain from above but plenty on the ground.

Stats: One blast of Vintage Led Zep 1980 Soundboard bootleg (on Minidisc! ), one indulgence of Bob Dylan 1983 Infidels Outtakes (iPhone),

Notes:

Another TNR where the rain gods are playing with me, and the rest of the world is on holiday or has cried off.

3sheds was to join me but the M6 conspired against this plan.

I stood at the entrance to my garage for a while studying the Rain Radar app. Eventually about 7pm it stopped..so I saddled up for a solo tootle with some retro personal stereo as company.

There is an upside to riding on your Todd – being able to try out different camera apps on my iPhone. With no whinging from anybody else being held up by my photo indulgence.

IMG_6483

Messing about on Kerridge ridge at your own pace is another benefit.

IMG_6484

After a gratuitous ascent of the Beeston brow the Poachers beckoned.

There I decide that “fraternising with the enemy” was permissible if your normal crew had deserted you for the evening. Quaffing and noshing with the WNBs is not a bad second best.
Until Dunc arrives to save me from becoming a fully paid up member.

TNR 30-6-2016 New ways into Narnia

IMG_8055

words by Alex, Pics by Slim
Crew: PTD, El Pres, G, TJ, Butty, Slim, Mr I, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Zig Zags, Walker barn, Chazza, Narnia, Chazza again, short cut to Narnia, Witches cottage, Leathers Smithy, Sutton hall.

Conditions: Cool, breezy, heavy rain at the end.

Stats: A stat free night?

Notes:

Another TNR where the rain gods are playing with us, late afternoon rain is mostly gone by the time we assemble.

IMG_8046

Butty obviously thinks it’s not going to be too wet (in T shirt and lightweight aldi waterpoof only) having said that he would only be riding if it were dry (optimistic?)

Whatapp updates from Slim – late to don waterproof, G – be here at the rather precise 6:39….and he was!!

IMG_6431

Its a stick to the forest kinda night with many route options..

to start with it all improves, layers removed on the climbs up the zig zags (enormous puddles though!)

Layers back on at chazza as the wind begins to bite (more big puddles)

IMG_6436

Splashy down, then right turn into a slightly muddy narnia – with washed out gravel at the bottom. Butty leads a split to do some exploring – its deemed good enough for a second go, regrouping at witches cottage its back up and round, a bit tricky under the trees to find the route again (3rd time lucky).

A good spot to stop for PTD specials (Happy Birthday!) absinthe then abelour and lots of assertive discussion on the state of the nation…time to get going and continue in the pub as the leaden skies finally let go again.

Narnia 2.0 is much greasier , thoughts of hardingland are shelved by some, and its everyone for themselves to the pub. Hardinlanders much damper it must be said.

IMG_8052

Leffe discontinued SHOCKER! but ales reliably good Zi Man nice and light (unlike the weather), Lord Lucan reliable as ever. Weather means its quiet and we are looked after very well. We are weak when it comes for puddings, red wine makes an appearance with cheese!

Dry ride home…

TNR 23rd June 2016 : Sawn-Off Campfire Classic

IMG_7988

Words and Pics by Pete

Crew : Pete, TJ , Kersh, Butty, El Pres, MRI, 3Sheds,

Route: BL – Zig Zags – Old Buxton Rd Track – Chazza and Ext – Cat – Sawn-off Danebower – Chumby – Standing Stone – Reverse Chazza – Campsite

Stats : One dead sheep , one liberal application of anti-midge spray.

Conditions : Clear, Mild and a bit midgy

Notes:

Much Whatsapp discussion resulted in a beer, butties and solstice camp fire plan . So it came to pass, and the first stage of the ride comprised the hoofing of our nosh, tins of refreshment and other good things up to the forest so we could lighten our loads for the main ride.

IMG_7993

Then we returned to our classic circuit, with a grin inducing descent of charity and onward to Oven Lane (aka Chazza Extension). This had been totally reshaped by the recent monsoon like weather – the result was both a challenge and a delight. Concentration was mandatory.

Upward to the Cat , and we crossed towards Danebower with a hot air balloon on the southern horizon. The meadows either side of the track were full of cotton grass side lit by the low evening light – what a fantastic time of year.

IMG_6373

Title explanation time – The classic circuit was “sawn off” by making a right turn well before reaching the A54 . Another rewarding descent . Definitely one for a dropper post !

Chumby had also been re-landscaped by the recent downpours , but its peak district classicness was still intact.

IMG_7978

By the time we were ascending to Standing Stone i was beginning to feel a bit bushed ….and the reverse ascent of Chazza from forest chapel definitely had some chunks of walking.

Our refreshment bags, hanging from the trees like a strange fruit, were thankfully still intact. No signs of metal munching zombie mice in Macc forest yet then 🙂

IMG_8004

Baden Powell would have been proud of our efforts. A perfect Cub Scout campfire was ablaze in no time.
Our Dan was once again toasted with a G and T. Butty supplied us with sausage rolls and a dash of Coleman’s. Beer was quaffed. A gentle breeze kept off the midges.

IMG_8008

Banter commenced. Closing time was not observed.

God was indeed in his heaven.

IMG_8018

TNR 16th June 2016 : Build an Ark !

IMG_7969

Words and Pics by Pete

Crew : Pete, PTD and TJ
Pub : Butty

Route: Rainbow Bridge – Middlewood way – Pott Shrigley – Brickworks – Birchencliffe Lane – Long Lane – Beeston Brow – The Poachers

Stats : Two fire engines

Conditions :
Decidedly damp and soggy

Notes:

In the hour or so before the ride Macclesfield (well at least Tytherington) saw some downpours of biblical proportions – I was wading through a small lake on my driveway trying to unblock the drain so that the garage did not get flooded.

Then I sheltered in the “man cave” putting the finishing touches to the re-shelled Cotic Soul before its debut shakedown ride.

IMG_7967

My Soul is truly dark now, as only a black medium 26 wheel frame was available.

I must credit Eric at this juncture – his ingenuity and help last Monday night allowed the re-shelling to be finished in under 2hrs 🙂

For a while I thought it was just too damn wet…but despite the late bail of one or two crew ..the show had to go on….

It was a late rendezvous at RB, even by my standards . About 7pm I think.

TJ and PTD sheltering on Middlewood way

TJ had already made the slog from Poynton to BL, getting decidedly drenched along the way in downpours. At BL he discovered the revised muster point ….

PTD’s positivity vibes lifted the team spirit …and the initial plan of abandon to the Poachers vital shortest route tuned into a moderately respectable ride. Up to the Brickworks with Birchencliffe Lane and the descent from Beeston Brow thrown in to make it a proper MTB ride.

As we arrived into Bolly we were greeted by the sight of two fire engines – the cellar of the Cotton Tree pub had been flooded

The Poachers was a welcome haven, already full of a soggy group of the WNB by 8.30. Fine ale and a quick change into warm dry stuff and the world was once again a better place.
