TNR 1-12-2016 Mucking about in the Mist

IMG_1239

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, TJ,Mr Inc, Coley, Stunt

Route: BL, Zig zags, Charity, Butty’s Snicket, Narnia, Charity, Extension, Standing stone, New BBQ descent, Rezzies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Balmy 7 degrees, hill fog from Back Eddisbury up, dry but very muddy trails.

Stats: Butty Faff (brake pad replacement), Off (Slim)

Notes:

A surprisingly “not cold” night, although the expectation of it being colder led to a sub 5 degree rule planning execution anyway 🙂

Hill Fog meant route would be the forest, Butty to catch up  (with cake!) which he did by the end of the Zig. then promptly had a major faff with brake pads, sticky chain and where’s my tool bag! Rest of us stood and offered advice (although Stunt did have a useful tool). Cows in the next field not bothered..

IMG_1197

Into the cloud past descending fell runners on the Zag, care descending to Walker barn.

No sign of the rush hour at Chazza, bar lights only by this point. Decision to do the snicket despite the likley mud driven by the fact that descending chazza would be somewhat hazardous in this poor vis.

IMG_1216

The pine needles meant that only the boggy patches were muddy (but how!)

Amazingly we found our way to the end, whilst discovering that a simple call your number system was beyond us! (Strictly style SEVEN! seemed to cause amusement)

Cake and warm whisky mac stop – perfect.

IMG_1232

Still misty all the way to the bottom of the oven, but then climbed out of it to standing stone.

Someone has been using our BBQ fireplace! and even properly sawing bits off fallen timber!! (secretly impressed..was it a lightweight hand chain saw??)

More cake and Coley’s special speyside malt in stoppered bottle (pirate stylee AAARRRGGGHHH)

IMG_1244

Very slippy descent, which caught Slim out at one point in low speed toppling.

Plus tyres good (if your nobs are big enough!)

Last thrash round the rezzies, PTD pops into the Smithy to sort xmas TNR meal, retire to Sutton Hall.

Busy and decorated with a lot of Santa sacks…we do find a table in the Garden Room 🙂

No one’s tempted by the dark ales yet, much Blonde and Wizarding. Sausage and Mash is however a big draw, and some even do puddings!!!!

IMG_1242

We play a virtual Dunc to lower the tone almost immediately (perhaps inspired by two stops pre pub?)

The real one sends us cartoons later too 🙂

Much talk of 2017 things to do..some of which are already happening.

Much mirth, and for a shortish ride a lot of fun 🙂

TNR 24-11-2016 Leafy Lanes

IMG_1887

words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Coley, Stunt, 3 Sheds, G

Pub: Dunc

Route: Tythy riverside car park, Bollin way, Prestbury, Chelford road, Findlow hill lane, Bradford Lane, Hocker Lane, Slade Lane, Bridleways, Artists Lane, Edgy descent, Swiss Hill, Edgy contouring, Legh Arms

Conditions: Cold, very muddy & wet trails under the dryish leaf layer.

Stats: One Pedal failure (G)

Notes:

Overdue our annual pilgrimage to the Edge of the Cheshire Champagne Triangle, a decent crew assembled on time.

The prodigal G returneth, and delivers legendary faff and mockery within 100m of the start when his pedal comes adrift of its pin! (He retires to swap bikes and rejoin us later)

Plenty of evidence of recent flooding, and mud to match as we slither into Prezza. Slim’s in charge of routeplanning, but El Pres is at the front (long muscle memory of the former daily commute kicking in??).

A nasty sight of bike on floor in front of car on wrong side of the road, and people standing around..luckily it’s not an incident, just El Pres helping out a car being towed re-attach the rope (phew!)

IMG_1151

Onto the quiet lanes, and the covering of leaves hides plenty of rocks, holes & mud..but of course that’s half the fun.

The mud under the trees is pretty epic, even Stunt’s and Butty’s plus tyres get bogged down eventually! the damp grass at the bottom of Slims ex commuting snicket is now flooded, and the dry track back to the Owl is literally a running stream for half of it!!

The ususal can we find the descent off the edge on the other side (whisper it, but we still miss the Thornton map mastery here!). 3 Sheds has not brought the moto GPS unit this time either, so slim is using his phone!. We do find a descent, but we must find the best one next time!

Swiss hill its usual challenge, Butty puts last years incident to bed and cleans the offending section (with full face this time).

G (who has found us again in the meantime) now does his usual of attempting to lead on (the wrong way). Stunt’s having none of it, and turns round. None of us went in the Right direction, but some of us were less wrong than others 🙂

Muddy and thirsty we lock up to the usual amusement and incredulity of exiting punters.

IMG_1157

Very quiet in the pub (all in the Trendy Coast over the road apparently), Wizard beer, pies all round (almost), and choice table by the window.

Conversation remains far too high brow, but eventually Dunc arrives, so Butty takes it down immediately.

The delights of some cold, damp kit to put on post pub.

TNR 17-11-2016 Winter Rush Hour

TNR 17th Nov 2016 - Traffic Jam

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, 3 Sheds, Mr I, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, Lower Ressies Loop, Smithy

Conditions: Cold and Clear, wet & muddy trails

Stats:  1 chain break (3 sheds)

Notes:

More start time shenanigans with online voting!! Democracy gone mad.

Slim was “on time” at 6:45 with the required drinks on board

Sadly most others were not..anticipating further lateness (words were had!)

Cold for those who had been waiting around…3 Sheds heads up hill early to get warm.

Crew is strung out over a fair distance by the first Zig, with counting slightly complicated by another couple of riders doing the same route.

With a tactical use of the road (by some) we are almost back together at Windyways, but the slog up to Charity stretches us again.

As we close in on the elusive 3 Sheds a string of lights appears from Hacked Way lane – It’s Rush hour in the forest..as 20+ riders from multiple groups have all managed to converge at the start of Charity in simultaneously…Eric would certainly not have approved!

TNR 17th Nov 2016 - Traffic Jam

Some banter is exchanged on “how lovely the weather is to bring out all these riders” 🙂

Under an amazing waning orange supermoon its time to descend!

At Narnia gate we extract ourselves from the stream of riders and head for the bench.

A triple refreshment stop 🙂 in addition to Slim’s Rusty Nails (excellent as ever), Butty has discovered some Turkish Ouzo like stuff in his freezer….strong licquorice with notes of burnt inner tube it actually tastes better than it smells!, and TJ has Glenfiddich (aaaahh).

The rest of Narnia is navigated without incident, and we merge with more riders at on Hardingland (what is going on!!). 3 sheds 9 speed chain reaches a failure point, but is quickly repaired with a quick link (those gold 9 speed ones are so easy!).

There is just time to order food at the Smithy before a quick blast up on the road, then round to Bob’s bench to finish the dregs of the Nails & Whisky (no takers for the Turkish!).

3 Stags in the field beyond the final reservoir turn loom in our lights briefly.

Smithy quite busy so we’re on the back table for food, before retiring to the table window by the fire for more drinks.

TNR 17th Nov 2016 - Traffic Jam

Hi brow topics dominate for a surprisingly long time, Dunc arrives and much debate ensues about the tone of the conversation dropping at this point 😉 Ribald humour much in evidence very soon.

Vans with bikes on park up outside and some of the visiting MTBers come in for a pint and crisps. One is a scott e bike for a chap who’s legs have clearly come off worse from an encounter with something (help for heros garb being worn) Respect!

Soon we are the last customers left, we almost manage to forget the now obligatory final short, and Stunt discovers that the doors are on one way locks!

Tis a cold ride home once again, but so far no ice yet this season.

TNR 10-11-2016 High – but not dry!

IMG_0988

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete.

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Coley, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, New Road, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough/Brook, Standing Stone, LH & RH sides, Ressies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Dry, clear, cold, huge amounts of surface water!

Notes:

It had rained all day, then cleared, with an interestingly low temperature that might freeze higher up??

Slim begs forgiveness for a later start, then is still late, presidential grumblings on sanctions are deferred due to promise of mid ride refreshment!

Coley bring shiny new tyres (on always shiny bike)

Lack of wind suggests we go big, big badger crosses in front of some of us early on.

The reward for the slog up are the moonlit clouds and incredibly clear views, we spy multiple red light lit masts not normally visible.

IMG_0975
One towards Whaley Bridge (possibly Emley Moor!?), one towards North Wales (Moel-y-Parc?), and three visible from Danebower hollow southwards…(Rugely Power station Chimney?, Sutton Coldfield TV mast?, Lichfield TV mast?) (ref list of tallest structures in UK on Wikipedia)

Off road the puddles are immediately many and deep, full waterproof trousers the only right option! Many with damp legs and rears.

Big burning on the right hand side post the gate gives Danebower a slightly spooky feel.

Chumby part 1 – choose either slippy greasy mud/grass or chunky rocks!

Slim provides cooking brandy to sooth the nerves 😉

IMG_0982

Just as well as Chumby part 2 = chunky rocks or chunky rocks!! Something big and tracked has been up and uncovered big things! Although the big pothole at the top by the gate has now been filled in.

Some tired legs on the standing stone ascent, fast and fun with extra wet leaves on the LH side, splashy and muddy on the lower RH side to follow. Consensus to head for pub, quick whizz around the ressies and down to Sutton Hall.

Hipster beard behind the bar, fire out, but radiators on 🙂

IMG_1005

Butty chooses where to sit based on dark chair covering less likely to show the inevitable damp patch!

TJ reviews his upcoming Singletrack advert (Joe you are a star!)

Dunc arrives and gets the beers in…then demonstrates the internet of things by changing the thermostat on his unsuspecting family back home! (was that wise?)

IMG_0997

We are not the loudest table (shocker) the lively ladies out do us, and also wind up a small dog!

Cold on the way home!!

FNR 4-11-2016 TheGuyFawkesAgenda

Crew: Mr I, Butty, Dr Simon, Stunt, El Pres

Bottle Lab: TJ & Ruth

A Troll production

Plan – Meet in Biddulph/Leek, ride, see fireworks from the Roaches, descend to Leek, change at the investment doer-upper and relax at the bottle lab before the urban bivvy.

Actual outcome

Unforecast light rain turns heavy, by the time we have rendezvoused at Meerbrook it is clear that the Roaches are a silly idea, we opt for the track round Tittisworth reservoir, El Pres sets off our 12 shot ordinance, before we head back very wet!

Bottle lab is an excellent place – Tatziki, Cucumber and mint beer on tap (yes really – and rather good!!), natchos, hot wraps, pate & toast (plus cake) are devoured swiftly. Upstairs an Aladdins cave of bottley beer heaven..where on earth to start!!?

Fruit sours, chocolately porters, light ales and more… we sample a couple each, stock up on some more for the bivvy and reluctantly head back out into the cold night.

Investment has not yet achieved heating, so its dry but cool (and dusty). We are warm on the inside, and comfy on a variety of bedding…El Pres does it in style with an actual mattress from home!!

Troll rise early with the dawn…and he soon has us up and about. He and Butty ride back to Biddulph troll cave, whilst El Pres & stunt are tasked with provisioning. Lucky Ruth awakes to slightly dishevelled bikers bearing bacon, bread, milk and eggs. Soon sizzling fills the air, coffee is brewing, and Ruth has enthusiastic followers for her impressive leaf tea collection.

Much chat and debate before we head our various ways.

Next time better weather (summer bivvy??)

TNR 3rd November 2016 : Better Late than never

Untitled

Words & Pics : Pete

Crew : PTD, El Pres, Alex, Eric, Slim .

Route : BL – Zig zags – Bridleway – the full Teggs past the abseiling point- off piste RHS descent. Reverse Nessit – Dans Bench – Mixed descents – rezzies – Sutton Hall

Conditions : Rain had just about stopped by the start of the ride, cold up at the top of the forest.

Stats : one late start, One refreshing tipple at Dan’s bench.

Notes : Once again in management summary form
• The Return of Alex and Eric.
• Late start at BL on Eric’s request & Eric-friendly crew size
• Avoid the rain but embrace the murk. Its getting cold !
• Thursday Rider Numbers depleted because of a FNR “Troll Production”
• Helmet Lights not much use in the murk
• Whisky Macs from Alex @Dan’s Nessit Seat are warming and anaesthetic.

Untitled

• Descent from benches was interesting – involving a weird encounter with Buxton Mountain Rescue on full forest recovery exercise (But Alex has the stats to prove that MTB incidents are statistically insignificant).
• Our own private room at Sutton Hall replete with fire

TNR 20th October 2016 : Bellowing in the Night

Library Shot (by Pete)

words and pics : Pete

Route : RB , Middlewood Way, Descent to the Vale , Beeston Brow, Pott Shrigley , southern approach to Lyme Park , climb to bow stones gate , bridle way return to Pott Shrigley , the Poachers

Crew: Butty, TJ , Poynton Andy, El pres, Coley, slim
Pub : Biggus Nickus and Dunc.

Weather :
Fine but cooling

Stats: one puncture and one (temporarily) stuck front mech – Pete.

IMG_0809

Notes :
In the absence of our proper authors, this is the best you are getting ..
– Butty route leadership
– Early faff (mea culpa)
– A cheeky Beeston
– Unorthodox approach to LP
– Nature Notes : Bellowing in the dark & Seas of eyes
– Fine Cheshire plain views
– Peroni and Leffe frenzy at the Poachers
– the arrival of Dunc and Biggus seemed to introduce that ribald element to the proceedings …or was it the breaking out of the Leffe?
AOE resurgence as the winter draws near

TNR 13th October 2016 : Spooky Moon

IMG_0757

Words and Pics by Pete

Crew : Shaun, Pete, TJ , Butty, El Pres, The Troll, 3Sheds

Route: RB – Redway Tavern track – Reverse Kerridge Ridge Bridleway – Unorthodox Exit to Rainow – Bull Hill – Charity- Narnia – The Leathers

Stats : One chain jam for TJ (Totally self inflicted)

Conditions : Thankfully dry (more or less) . 8C when we start and decidedly cool at the top of the forest .

Notes:

You know that TNR Crew succession planning is not just an aspiration when PTD’s lad is actively organising this week’s ride via WhatsApp. His Dad’s priorities had got confused this week 🙂 .

Seven was the magic number this week, and a Rainbow Bridge start which led on to a return to the Forest .

IMG_7612

Is now more or less dark from the start of the ride but the trails are 80% dry. The Autumn moon was doing some very spooky stuff with the clouds as we crossed the back of the Kerridge Ridge.

An unorthodox route down and across to Rainow brought us out on a footpath opposite the road to Lamaload – no confrontations with residents thankfully.

By the time we got to the start of Chazza TJ had his bike upended and was struggling to deal with a decidedly jammed chain.

IMG_7602

A quick diagnosis from young Shaun found the root cause : a blatant case of “Total Neglect Maintenance Systems LTD” (just check out the pictures of the jockey wheels)

IMG_7604

A shortish ride tonight, and we cut right into Narnia and once more sampled its delights and challenges …especially the washed out bits as you get to witches cottage !! there are big holes were there were no holes before.

The Leathers beckons, and once more we enjoyed its hospitality …with Carol looking after us very well. Much talk of distilling !

There was even a second round of drams to celebrate Pete’s birthday .

TNR 6-10-2016 Secret Singletracks

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Stunt

Route: BL, Old Road, Teggs, Crooked Yard Road, Chazza, SS1, Narnia, Lower Chazza, Dentists Descent, Standing Stone, New spot trail, Kirsten Munt ascent, Nessit,  singletracks, reservoir loop, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Clear & Dry with a chilly Easterly breeze.

Notes: 50% increase in crew this week!! So that will be a grand total of three 🙂

Its quality that counts though – and with a tricky wind and very dry trails its a perfect night for doing all the secret singletracks 🙂

Starting with Teggs we meet a very nice walker who wants to know where to get lights as good as ours! Less give in the hard ground makes for a bumpier descent than usual, but the right hand side snicket (free of argumentative natives this week) is very rideable (if your legs and technique are up to it!)

Opting for the road climb we are still generating enough heat to avoid the extra layer just yet. Cracking sky with the last of the sunset, a half moon, few clouds, and all the hues of light in the deepening dusk.

Layers on and full lights for the first foray onto the paths less travelled…to find it extremely well travelled, and waymarked for night time riders!! It looks a little different at night…and soon it’s because it is..and others have made a quasi downhill course. Backtracking we do find “our” track with a bit of dead reckoning trial and error, and enjoy the dry and firm track 🙂

Back on the Narnia track our lights catch the eyes of a couple of deer lower down.

Rocky and loose down to forest chapel, more backtracking to find the entrance to dentist descent – which is untouched, although some trees are down near the start (which is why it looked a little different). Fantastic conditions – just the odd diversion for downed twiggery here and there. Care needed for the odd damp rut as PTD has a sideways slide!

More uphill on the road to Standing stone, then a sober explore of the “new track” it’s all rideable if you know what is coming, more deer encountered lower down.

Time is on our side, so we can head up again, this time offroad, the KM ascent has had some drainage work done, widened and topped up with aggregate, seemed easier than we feared.

Stunning views from Dan’s bench, then a stunning encounter with a huge Stag just round the corner! PTD is level with him before we realise he is there!! He moves off a little then turns round, we decide to take the other path to the gate..

Perfect conditions for the sneaky tracks all the way down, and a new Wall jump on the downhill course means serious signs! (good 4 foot drop off!) PTD is excited – but needs a far burlier bike than the five.

The pub is calling, and with the last of our energy some impromptu racing to the Smithy. Bar is busy, and some ladies (who must be regular) happily inform us that they call us the Gynocologists..because we have bright lights..there is no real answer to that!

Kodiak Gold back on tap (beating the perfectly pleasant Thirst Quencher). Much debate between El Pres and PTD on food choice, they both plump for the quiche, but with differing sides, Garlic Bread & Skinny Chips. Stunt does his usual by being temped by new dishes before ordering the burger!

#firstworldproblems alert as out of Chiabatta they are, and would it be ok if they make the garlic bread from Focaccia instead!?

Tales of Finale Ligure…we need to go! Good catching up all round, and an excellent night, no stats recorded, although we reckon we’ve done some decent climbing (certainly the evil cramp that struck in the middle of the night would support that view!)

TNR 22-9-2016 Equinaxical

IMG_0679

Words by Alex, pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Coley, Bern, Flapjacker Andy, Stunt, 3

Route: BL, Zig, Walker Barn, Tea rooms, Axe Edge, 3 Shires, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, Nessit, Resevoirs, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Clear skies, mainly dry trails, cold higher up

IMG_0666

Notes:

A beautiful evening on the autumn equinox, late summer has been a good one this year.

PTD persuades us that Axe edge will be dry so we go big, and high!

Climbing is a pleasure with the low reddish light bathing dried seed heads of the summer growth, casting shadows from every fold and lump in the landscape, colouring vapour trails pink and generally everywhere you looked it was lovely!

Rapidly approaching dusk = no motorbikes, so from Walker Barn it was back on the new road for fastest way up. Regroup at the tea rooms for extra layers as the autumnal nip well and truly in the air (we are all underdressed!)

Lights on by the time we are ready to go offroad from Axe edge, and true to his word, the doubletrack is mainly dry, long and fast and fun 🙂

IMG_0673

The gnarly section just before 3 shires is either a hoot or a walk depending on your bike/skills…Stunt discovers the limits of a rigid + bike!

We chat to two riders passing through (and Flapjack Andy admires an identical bike)

Top gear challenge to the start of chumby – the downhill brothers prefer the muddy field slog to the rocky longness of Cuthorne, whilst others relish the uphill tecciness 🙂

The Cuthorners are in place before the mudders (who then claimed that they hadn’t tried very hard). Pause for four laggards before invoking Kershaw protocol.

Chumby extra chunky with washed out rocks.

All together again on the climb to standing stone as a TJ faff meant they did the road down.

We have done well on time, so we head towards Nessit for a final bit of off road. Another split as some are tempted by dark trails on the way.

Bobs bench not quite the quiet spot one couple were hoping for!

IMG_0678

Warmth of Sutton hall very welcome, Oracle pale ale ace, the pick me up coffee porter not to everyone’s taste, and the 15yr old Dalwhinnie a total bargain!!

Autumn riding season now officially open 🙂
