TNR 2-2-2017 Blown to the Edge

TNR 2nd Feb 2017

Crew: EL Pres, PTD, 3 Sheds, Butty, Stunt

Pub: Dunc, Slim

Route: BL, Chrome bridge, Bollin Valley, Prestbury, Chelford Road, Bradford Lane, Hocker Lane, Muddy Snicket, RHS Artists lane loop, Edgy “thornton” descent, Mottram Road & Oak Lane back to Prestbury, Legh Arms

Conditions: Wind gusting to 40mph taking the edge of the otherwise very mild 11C, muddy trails.

Stats: One stuck up dropper (Stunt)

Notes: Another small crew (too many TNR’ers working or wandering) and a route defined by not being blown off

..your bike (ahem)

The bollin valley is muddy, with exceptional slop at the Prestbury end due to tipper trucks having churned it to mush (Butty rather regretting coming to meet us from that end, next time he’ll wait in the cul de sac!)

Chatty ride up the chelford road climb, top tips from Butty on choosing a Physio (PTD having a shoulder injury from skiing in flat light)

Go for one with big hands (well I think it was one with Big Mits that I heard)

At the top of Bradford lane, stunt discovers his KS lev is rather firmly stuck up! not ideal given what is to come..

Indeed top of Bradford is muddier than expected and this does not bode well for the softer trails.

TNR 2nd Feb 2017

Gloopy is the snicket, and the RHS trails are hoof churned slop fests which even the tubby tyred riders are struggling with. Lower down we accidentally discover a grassy sandy area with great chutes – which is actually a shortcut into the exit track to the Owl.

But the biggest news of the night is that after struggling to find the start of the main Edge descent, we do finally find the fabled “go right halfway down” Thornton descent!

Mutinous murmurings about Swiss Hill have been pointedly made all night, and given the headwinds to get back it’s a no brainer to head for the pub at 8:35. It is a long slog, although early signs of spring in snowdrops here and there in the verges.

Arriving at 9 we just make food (which is closing early..Coast seems to be hitting the Legh arms hard). Ceap Wizard ale, Pricy Peroni, and El Pres gets food envy with the rather underwhelming portion of risotto being outshone by a the burger with humungus quantities of chips and salad. Pete is lucky his food is still hot by the time he and Dunc arrive (we have been looked after very well), having escapes the clutches of the back of kerridge which being super soft was not as quick as they thought!

As usual the arrival of Catalytic Dunc takes us from Taxing talk to the bottom of the barrel (or was that already reached in the San Fransico topic just before they arrived!) Much chortling ensues, before the IT crowd get all misty eyed and passionate about their geeky pasts.

The customary “Dear little flo..” announces we have left the area..still 9.5 degrees after midnight!!

What weird weather next week?

words by Stunt, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Stunt

Route:
Rainbow Bridge, Middlewood way, Clarke Lane, Oak Lane, Endon House climb, Lidgetts Lane, Back of Kerridge, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to the Layby, Sponds Hill, RH side decent from stile, Chapel descent, Pott Shrigley, Poachers

Conditions: Dry, Sub zero, ground freezing as the skies cleared.

Stats:
2 Frozen drivechain faffs (El Pres & Stunt)

Notes:

Rather weird weather – 24 hours of below zero, but cloudy and windy meant no ice or frozen ground!?

Small crew assemble well layered up – Stunt with new subtle but funky reflective dots on black overtrousers, Butty with his “normal” purple and yellow variety…the disco trouser night was born šŸ™‚

IMG_1990

Some delayering (or opening of zips) needed after the endon house climb, trails dryish, but no sign of frost.

All change round the back of kerridge – frosty grass, and frozen mud – fast and clean!!…well almost, as we progress further the deeper sections are only partly frozen, and the deepest still wet! Still its sooo much better than the silly slitheryness of our last visit.

A pause by the poachers for a couple of cars to pass…and the jokes about a swift half have an edge to them, we need to get going fast!!

Eerie single bell tolling at Pott Shrigley church seems to match the mood as we slog upwards, the odd patch of glassy ice as the last wet patches freeze solid.

IMG_1974

Van and corsa parked at the layby…occupants of the corsa keeping warm through body warmth and movement!!!

Getting increasingly cold, and wind picking up. Still mostly frozen with the odd soft bit..which leads to some frozen mud issues…El Pres has it preventing his front mech moving, then Stunt finds his jockey wheels frozen solid with muck!

Re grouping at the top – but sheltering in a bomb hole to stay out of the wind, all available layers are deployed and Stunts flask of coffee is exceedingly welcome (Mountain Rescue approved – ie no alchohol is present)

Virtually blown over the fence, Butty leads us down the tamest of the descents to the lane, then the Chapel descent – with a few mega ice puddles to negotiate (Butty is skidded into the rough by the first one!)

Time is on our side, but our extremities are voting for the pub, it’s time to chain gang back to the Poachers for warmth! One badger seen scampering across the road.

IMG_1983

Buxton Weather is consulted for some stats, -2.9 with wind chill of -6 and a bit (suspect both were lower on the top of Sponds!).

evidence

Dark side of the Moose (best beer name of the year so far?) and Pegasus the ales of choice, hearty meals all round, and then a mini axis of evil decends as we progress into a Leffe vortex and a Scotch finish (token Burns gesture).

Disco trousers on again for the ride home!

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, 3 Sheds, Stunt

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Windyways, Saddlers Way, Lower Teggs, Smithy, Ressies, White Rabbit Ascent, Singletrack back down through the DH course, fire road past the logged area, new campfire spot, various routes back to the paths & ressies, Sutton Hall.

Conditions:
Cool, Damp, very soft away from well drained tracks.

Notes:

Stunt posts a time to meet him at the new campfire for flaming xmas pudding, PTD and Butty each bring half the ingredients for rusty nails.

Stunt heads there direct having run late with his logistics (and upgrading bike)

Crew head up hill and down dale in a direct’ish kind of route to meet up.

A good night for wildlife spotting, owls a hooting and several pairs/small groups of deer spotted (mildly creepy yellow eyes watching your progress if riding alone)

Despite being damp and c5 degrees, a lack of wind, and a lack of surface water means its not cold if dressed appropriately.

IMG_1719

Cometh the hour cometh the man…and at the RV Stunt has a small fire, pre warmed brandy ready for lighting, warm pud, plates and shot glasses all ready!

Rusty nails served as the flambe is readied, delivered with impressive flame in both pouring cup and on said pudding, photographed, and then served.

Alpkit half and half pedalsĀ and 27.2 KS lev dropper post inspected on stunts bike (the chubster getting a dose of proper bike love),plus bikepacking geekery in titaniumĀ alpkit stove & anodised windshield, and niche folding chopping board…

More rusty nails, and a burning of the paper plates.

IMG_1713

Winter campfire is something we should do more (although more people would need to bring dry wood)

El Pres does the official dousing (not that on sodden ground it was needed!)

IMG_1709

Fun descent – half the crew opt for the very slippery singletrack option, the rest the fire road.

good thrash down, passing a couple of bikers in the stream near the lane between the forest and the ressies – cleaning bikes rather than unfortunate incident :-0

IMG_1727

Urgent pumping required for both the chubby tyred boys (Stunt and Butty) – water bar burping the rear tyres. More needed at the pub…dirty rims not sealing properly!! (no one should have a dirty rim?)

Ligher bites with dense pudding already inside us, steak sandwich the right answer, sausages and mash almost too much.

The lack of a Dunc Ribaldry Catalysis meant that we had to work hard to lower the tone, prior to which we discovered fascinating facts on adhesives….Araldite was invented as a dental adhesive (but gives off nasties so not actually used for such), and false nail glue is very effective as an emergency tooth sticker -inner!

Pete almost starts to stack zeds, but is persuaded to have a welsh whisky before the ride home.

Chubby rims seem to have sealed, but do lead to some more rapid riding home than normal!!

IMG_8357

Words by Alex, Pics by El Pres and Pete

Crew:
El Pres, PTD, Eric, Mr Inc, Stunt

Pub: Dunc, Pete, Nic

Route: BL, Old Road, Zig, Teggs, Smithy, Witches Cottage, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Back of the Moon to the end of the wall, Descent back to where we started, Shutlingsloe steps gate singletrack to the S bends, Nessit, standard descent, track and ressies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Just below zero, light snow on the ground, icy higher up, ground not frozen and muddy underneath.

Stats:
Ā One off (mr I)

Notes:

After a mild and wet week, a cold snap = just a hint of snow that won’t last long (Eric has come down specially!)

Nothing settling in Macc, but white on the hills, a night to make the most of what there is, with conditions higher up far from certain.

IMG_1654

A small crew (with a few late set offs to the pub), a classic route is in order.

Rather warm initially (not quite sub zero in town, and a climb = possibly overdressed)

Very sloppy on the Zig with huge puddles, fields white, but tracks dark.

Finally on Teggs we actually put tyre to crunchy snow, slight melting from earlier now freezing into an icier crust.

IMG_8353

Pretty good on the upper slopes, but muddy lower down.

Long slog up to Witches cottage, helped by a fullish moon and white trees, lots of icy/frosty noise from under tyre too šŸ™‚

Hacked Way Lane ungritted, with sheet ice where a 4×4 has been, slightly techy ascent to find the necessary grip.

Puddles frozen over on Charity, but many with running water under the ice, fortunately the descent was more wet than slippy (in fact very wet!). Frosty rocks on the extension interesting!

We have done well on time, and Eric suggests back of the moon, PTD suggests a modification to do the decent of our ascent (if you will) to avoid the boggy moor. It’s a good plan (although cold on the ridge with wind and cloud), yet just enough fresh snow for some bike skiing!

The cut across to the main path very soft and slippy, as is the singletrack, with an especially deep boggy bit near the end catching out Mr I for an over the front splat!

cheeky boys 12-01-2017

A brief stop to regroup at Dan’s bench, EL Pres shows glove worn through to the skin, and Stunt discovers a major gusset seam failure of waterproof trousers.

Then the usual blast down to the pub, where Pete and Dunc have just arrived.

Quietish, but with fire on and hot radiators! White Nancy ordered by the half dozen, Nic does the shortest pub appearance ever! Welsh Whisky rather fine.

IMG_1681

Fresh snow starts falling about 11pm so snowballs on exit, and tyre tracks on the white roads.

Proper winter (just)

TNR 5-1-2017 Tough to Taxal!

IMG_1569
Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Dunc, Mr I, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Nic

Route: BL, Buxton Road, Ecton Av snicket, Rainow Road, Double Track and wiggle, Lamaload Dam, Hoolihey Lane, Saltersford, Pym Chair, Wingather Rocks, Wood, Taxal Edge, Kettleshulme, Road to Robin Hood.

Conditions: Frozen, Clear, Breeze building later

Stats: 1 Off Ā (Butty)

Notes:

The monday crew ride again! except for TJ who is in search of snow…

El Pres takes charge of route planning and declares Taxal…which seems ambitious.

Starting at BL we head for the Robin Hood to collect Mr I who has cunningly parked near the finish! this prompts the first chunterings from Butty (who has now ridden further than he needed to).

The snicket to Hurdfield proves that the ground has indeed refrozen after a brief thaw of the sunny patches earlier in the day, it also shows Dunc that leaving your tyre levers wedged on the outside of your under seat pack is not a good plan (one picked up, one lost forever).

It may be the monday ride, it may be the thought of the route to come, but already it’s a slog uphill to Rainow, and more Butty chunterings brings sharp rebuke from El Pres!

Any thoughts of route change are banished as excellent work by our leader negotiates food at 9:30 in the Hood, and its onwards on the “most direct” (but not necessarily easiest) route to Pym Chair…up the double track before Smith Lane.

Talk of a track to Smith lane and the top of the dam turn out to be just that – height is lost down to the treatment works and its a long long trudge up the Dam slope, with frosty grass being somehow sticky!

Back to Hoolihey lane and the first ice on the road…the gutters have been running with water during the day, and it’s now sheet ice in patches. Care is needed to Saltersford as occasionally the ice crosses the road!

No-one has the energy to curse the Pym’s Chair climb, but we are all very pleased to make the top. Views are crystal clear, a hint of could building give a moody moon, mars and venus out too.

IMG_1555

Library Photo of the view to Windgather from Pym’s Chair in daylight

As soon as we are regrouped it’s off across the moor – frozen is fun! but watch for the odd icy patch (and frostly planks!) To add interest some of the wettest sections are still muddy, its fast mostly..which may account for Butty somehow managing to be caught out by the only tree there!?

A nip of winter warmth just before the rocks (well sub 5C rules apply!)

Sticky frosty grass is good down to the woods.

Digging deep we press on and push up to the start of Taxal (exchanging a bit of banter with a couple of riders higher up)

More rapid singletrack and much concentration needed (especially for the vehicle ruts right at the end!)

Amazingly we have 45 mins to get back to the pub, its something of a TNR ritual for a sub zero slog back from Kettleshulme in January, there is nothing for it but to grind it out. Tired bodies and minds are not amused by the head wind that appears towards the old Highwayman (just when it should have been getting easier with the slope!)

In on time, job done, Plum Porter or Burning Gold, and generous portions of food (made short work of). Biggus arrives to add further cheer and prove that the axis of ribaldry lies between him and Butty! Talk of the Jura, a wiki tour of notable macclesfield folk (including convicts, glamour models and cricket correspondents…but not Pete’s assertion about the guitarist from M people!)

Stunt’s suggestion for drone racing on a campfire night is poo pooed (but only on the condition we would need about 20 because we would crash them all instantly!) Maybe we should try something simpler (like ax throwing!)

All too soon it’s time to head out and enjoy the Oakenbank decent (well apart from El Pres who had a more direct route home) eventually we wait for Pete who we remember has no phone, and it’s a slow pootle home.

Stats will show it wasn’t quite a Munro night…2700ft and 21 miles, but by ‘eck some of them feet were tough ones!

Honorable mention for Pete for having already done this week: Monday ride, a 3 hr Ā TJ Wednesday road ride, Ā lots of dog walking, and not complaining once on the ride! (also giving the rest of us some recovery time at the regroups, of which he got very little!!)

Fingers crossed for more cold and clear nights (maybe even some snow?)

New Year BH MDR to “Frozen” Tor

IMG_1507

Words by Alex, pics by Pete

Crew: Slim, El Pres, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Mr I, Stunt

Route: Pete’s Garage, Snickets of Tythy, Rainbow Bridge, Endon House Climb, Lidgetts Lane, Bull Hill Lane, Buxton Road, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, Undulations to Hoolihey Lane, Lamaload, Rainow, Oakenbank, Home

Conditions: A hint above freezing in Tythy, below zero higher up. Frosty with added ice in places.

Stats:

2 Faffs Failed rear mech (mr I), Skipping rear mech (stunt)

3 Offs (Pete x 2, Mr I x 1)

Notes:

A Monday Bank Holiday ride aligned with the planetsĀ (Venus and Neptune apparently), to give clear and cold weather, and lots of riders šŸ™‚

A prompt start at 1pm turned into a megaĀ maintenance session…Mr I discovering hisĀ rear mech missing a key piece, and arriving atĀ Pete’s with a shiny new one in his hand (and a void inĀ hisĀ wallet) having popped into Evans on the way.

Cake courtesy of El Pres’s mum, and Tea courtesy of Jane (and the new tea pot), meant that everyone else could attend to greasing Maxles and Seatposts, fill water bottles, chat and generally offer unwanted advice to the mech surgery going on.

Unbelievably by 1:45 as weĀ were due to set offĀ Butty remebered Ā that he needed some more air in his tyres (now that they were clean of doggy doo, and all repaired….it had been a long and filthy morning in the Butty household!)

Finally we are away with Dunc leading us on a tour of the Tythy riviera, over a potentially treacherous Rainbow bridge, and up Kerridge (to finally get warm), then up Bull Hill lane (to get really warm!).

Stunt needs some help to tweak his rear cassette, which allows the peleton to regroup, and on up to the Tea rooms.

IMG_1504

The Sun is getting lower, the paragliderists are packing away their gear, walkers are heading back to cars, Layers are re-donned as its getting pretty cold.

At the top of the track there is a lot of sheet ice, our slim cameraman takes a minor tumble.

IMG_1527

A cautious descent on the down bit of the “down and up” to Shining tor, but its ok, andĀ a stunning sunset reward at the top.

Dunc provides Jura as a fitting sundowner, we watch a buzzard hanging effortlesslyĀ on the ridge lift, and Slim gets a couple of shots in before it’s time to move on to keep warm.

As predicted the normally boggy crossing is frozen…but thereĀ are still plenty of frozen puddles over said mud…some are strong enough to ride over…others are not! Extreme care is needed on line, and heading into the frosty grass can lead to wheels catching hidden ruts (both Mr I and Slim come a cropper), with a particularly spectacular leaping dismount over a plunging bike from Mr I.

IMG_1499

A whisky mini quiz from Butty’s double barreled hip flaskery, the Laphroaig guessed …but the sweet blend beat the contestants..Club Haigh (reminicent of a rusty nail)

Stunning sky, crescent moon with Venus, orange tinge on horizon cloud bank, and light enough to decend by all the way to Hoolihey Lane…just as well as there is an extra fence half way down!

Slow progress through the Lamaload woods as our Cameraman makes the most of having a decent camera on board, Stunt provides welcome further refreshement with Cognac lacedĀ hot sweet black coffee.

IMG_1532

Crunchy dam descent to aĀ suprisingly muddy path, and the long climb out to test the legs and lungs again.

A parting of the ways in Rainow, two tythy bound boys head back via oakenbank, with the others hoping to find warmth in the Robin Hood.

Top ride and stunning scenery..a great start to 2017!

TNR 29th December 2016 : Keeping the Faith

IMG_1474

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, TJ, Slim, Bernard

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Back Eddisbury Gate Lane, Bull Hill Rendezvous, Chazza, Singletrack to Narnia, Forest Chapel, Dentists Descent Mk1 , Road climb to Standing Stone, Nessit Bench , Downhill Course, Rezzies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Dry & Cold, a light breeze from the south, loads of hoar frost and icy bits (to keep it interesting), part muddy and part frosty grip

Stats: Nothing significant

Notes:

Seventeen last week dwindles to just four of the faithful for the last ride of 2016.

And the excuses for no-show come thick and fast …

– Man flu
– Stiff Neck
– Being “otherwise engaged” in Rome

It’s a good job there is a hard core of trustworthy souls to keep the flag flying

IMG_1480

And they took pity on me to agree to a rendezvous at the top of Bull Hill .

Bernard gets his seventh ride of 2016 in, fresh from a seven mile walk already that day

A bit of stargazing as its a lovely clear night : the shopping trolley.(The plough you heathens) ..the Plaedes….Cassiopeia…Orion …Venus, Mars.

IMG_1477

Paul takes us on a tour of the ā€œDentist’s Descentsā€ …it would have been ā€œThe Dentist’s Descents : Director’s Cutā€ but we ran short on time šŸ™

We saw no-one else until our descent from Nessit via the downhill track and the rezzies loop …where I encountered Chris Jones and a couple of his mates who asked me about “keeping the faith” on a Thursday night . With a clear conscience I said it had been a good year for maintaining the tradition, from my perspective.

TNR 22-12-2016 Christmas Cocktails

IMG_1377

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: PTD, El Pres, El Pud, Butty, TJ, Slim, 3 Sheds, Mr I, Eric, G, Coley, Croxy, Dr Simon, Shaun, Bernard, Mark, Stunt

Pub: Mawds, Nic

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Charity Lane, Narnia, Witches Cottage, Smithy

Conditions: Dry & Cold, a little breezy

Stats: 2 Offs (Bern & Mark), One Tubeless Tyre “rimming” (Butty)

Notes:

The World Famous PTD TNR Christmas Cocktail Ride kicked off this year with decorated bikes at BL

Britebikelights showing the latest in very bright remote controlled multicolour LED strips (likely to match the drinks later!)

IMG_1428
IMG_1429

EL Pres with a brave move to have baubles hanging from the handlebars and seat! plus frame lights.

Stunt with an understated tinsel and lights decoration.

Slim ..just lights

Bah Humbug from the rest!

Excellent turnout – especially from the statistically insignificant brigade šŸ™‚

IMG_1382

Much chat on the pootle up to the top of charity.

First stop: Charity Top

Cocktail no 1 “Green” Ā Orange and Mango fruitiness, very refreshing

Fireworks (a la Butty) of the multi shot bloc variety.

Chazza now dry on the top section, regroup at Narnia gate, but ho – there are stationary lights..Bern has had a minor off but joins us to say Butty has stopped with at flat.

IMG_1426

Backstory..last week Butty told us of his woe at not being able to get his summer tyres off his rims in order to fit his new grippy knobblies (Bikesmithy visit to sort during the week)

Imagine the irony when descending chazza he gets a flat because one of the new ones has de-rimmed! Luckily he has support from those who’s solution is to help pump (rather than hit with sticks)

The rest of us helpfully decide to head to Narnia bench for the second and final stop (ambitious thoughts of getting to Teggs vis Saddlers way now abandoned)

The Christmas tree decorated (a smaller one this year)

Second Stop: Narnia Bench

Cocktail no 2 “Dark Yellow” aka Roosevelt ..a variation on a rusty nail, with Bourbon and lime. Rather good (but if your wee ever looks like this Dr S says to need to see your GP!)

Also available, Prosecco from Croxy, and half a keg of Stella from Bern (left over from the WAG’s do) we almost send him up to help butty as the co2 might help re inflate that big tyre!

G tries to help get the lager out (and manages to restrain his stick hitting nature) but only manages a long hiss šŸ™‚ Luckily our masterbrewer is on hand to take charge and the amber nectar flows (Piss should look like this apparently)

Its getting pretty parky by the time the laggards arrive (although they are warm from all that pumping!!)

IMG_1388

Cocktail no 3 “Dark and White” the piece de la resistance – a syrupy blackcurrant bottom, with a baileys top, separating cleanly into two layers (spoon used, but may not have been needed) Hmm like liquid trifle šŸ™‚

Time for the Pub (we are on an 8:45 promise), no time to lose (El Pres has lost most of his baubles though), straight down..what could possibly go wrong!?

Lower narnia still pretty washed out (which catches out Mark – full points for the impressive tumble into the bushes).

Shaun manages to slip over when taking his bike through the stile

Several interesting moments on the long drag due to a layer of mud from forest operations…Hang on there are no trees on the right hand side!!!..potential new lines to investigate soon?

Warm welcome at the smithy where we have the bar area all to ourselves.

Duchars and “A Good Stuffing” quaffed in quantity, much telling of tall tales on both tables, food devoured, and likely the largest TNR bill in history!

A control night for the Dunc Ribaldry catalyst theory

A long line of lights wends it’s way down the hill into the night šŸ™‚

IMG_1394

TNR 15-12-2016 Wet Top – Soggy Bottom!

IMG_1317

Crew: PTD, Slim, Butty, TJ, 3 Sheds, Mr I, Coley, Croxy, Stunt

Pub:
Nic & Dunc

Route: BL, Rainbow Bridge, Middlewood way, Bolly back streets, snicket to Poachers, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone Trail, Sponds Hill, Dale Top, Quarry Descent, Birchencliff, Styperson Woods, Sneaky Slither to Middlewood way, Vale.

Conditions: Mild, Light rain higher up, very wet & muddy trails.

Notes:

Another night of clouds, rainĀ and muddiness in prospect, but a southerly breeze might just keep the hill fog at bay.

Decent crew assembles (including we welcome return of Croxy!) and Butty takes the routemeistering lead.

IMG_1309

A nice bit of variety on the way to Pott Shrigley, and then due to likely ground conditions, a rare road climb to the gritstone trail. By the top the odd fleck of dampness in the air had turned to proper rain, although cloudbase higher than the hills. Waterproofs on (many unzipped due to lack of coldness), and onwards to Sponds.

Any thoughts of Bowstones and into the Park are abandoned as the ground is saturated, even the short traverse to the next trig pointĀ is incredibly muddy, and the whole area flecked with grey paper waste.

Time for downwards slithering, tubby tyres leading the way, hilarious lack of grip especially either side of the big double track mega ruts.

IMG_1321

Decent views from the top style, even though not the weather for hanging about. The quarry descent very good with extra slippy challenge, some are faster than others, but all down safe.

Mud rinsed from Tyres in the Birchencliffe watersplash, before re coating in the Styperson woods šŸ™‚

A final bit of gratuitous filth via a cut through to the Middlewood way (which almost claims Mr I in comedy slippage and over recovery barbed wire near miss!).

Down into Bolly and the Vale..which as luck would have it had space and time for food ordering (just!)

Soon the White Nancy has been drunk dry, Eastern Nights is not far behind, and Food devoured, when Nic & Dunc arrive! More co-incidence as Coley has brought a Modern T@ss collection which means that Ribald behaviour is again amongst us (or at least this end of the table).Slim’s is reduced to Basil Brush mirth on more than one occasion!

IMG_1316

The sensible end of the table leave early (as promised), axis of evil prevented by lack of tavern flexibility (maybe just as well).

Next week cocktails in the forest and Crimbo meal šŸ™‚

TNR 8-12-2016 Kerridge Slither

Untitled

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Bernard, Stunt

Pub: Nic & Dunc

Route:
Rainbow Bridge, Endon House climb, Push up by the quarry, Kerridge ridge top back towards Lidgetts lane. Lower Kerridge to Cow lane (onto the Rainow road). Robin Hood, Oakenbank, Poachers snicket, Ingersley Vale, Woody Snicket back up to Lower “Back of Kerridge”, back to Cow lane, back to Robin Hood.

Conditions:
Mild, Dry, Very wet and Muddy trails

Stats: One Off (Bern)

Notes:

A Northern Rebellion week with Rainbow Bridge declared unilaterally.

El Pres brings Bern from BL but carelessly loses him at the last…watch that slippy wooden edge of the path (should have been the warning!)

Butty teases on whatsapp – but the old friend turns out to be impressively squeaky brakes on the singlespeed.

Untitled

A wet grass and wet mud = could be interesting kind of night, and the trudge up the steps by the quarry is tricky in places unless you have grippy boots.

Pause at the top to play – “what’s that light?” of the nearer to home kind. Bern wondering about the sporting pitch lights, strange orange strips (Tythy Shell garage), and not a single mention of Winter hill šŸ™‚

Butty takes us along the ridge a bit to get into the fields, and El Pres’s rear end suffers from some severe wobble before we get there…tyres will the a theme..El pres needs a less worn one in these conditions.

The slitherin begins, dew glistening and turning the grass a ghostly grey. Rabbits are startled as are we when a new fence blocks the gap in the wall, and is now christened the Limbo fence (as its only a top bar). First pushing of the night as not everyone has the traction (or legs) for the really steep slope. Stunt with his chubby tyres has both, and so begins the Stunt opens every gate for the rest of the evening theme.

Untitled

Another pause to savour the views from the trig point, Rainow chocolate box pretty with its twinking lights (many of which are blue this year). More slithery fun going down…and we haven’t even got to the really muddy bit yet!

True to form the steep snicket after the gate before hitting the cow lane track is majorly slippy. Butty goes first and many an accursed cry is heard (but he stays upright). Bern plows down with total commitment, even tubby tyres drift a little, but its good mucky fun šŸ™‚

Robin Hood are delighted with our food order (even if they are out of steak).

Untitled

55 minutes to do a loop, thoughts of Sponds are dashed by cold reality, but another Butty bright idea takes us back down Oakenbank, down the Poachers snicket to the welcoming strains of Bolly Brass fittngly bashing out “O come all ye faithful”, over the last of the autumn leaves and past the skeletal bones of Ingersley Mill and up the double track to the old mill pond.

Stunt brags about his ability to clean the slippery snicket (then promptly runs out of legs half way). Through the wonderful bespoke white nancy push gate ironmongery, and on the Back of Kerridge track. Super muddy in places (again chubby tyres are king!).

Wainright, Black Sheep and Hobgoblin on draught. Gammon or Pies – all are good (although el Pres has Pie envy)

Untitled

Good to see Nic out, and yet more joshing on Dunc’s catalytic impact, and some rather good value Jura to finish with.

Oakenbank post pub!
