WhatsApp Image 2018-04-20 at 06.27.26

Stats .
– Earliest ever TNR bbq ride .
– Three of the original classic TNR crew turn up to swell our numbers.

Notes :

What a difference a week makes.

Last weeks beastly easterly and low cloud have been replaced with 25c at 6:45pm and azure blue sky.

Alex comes up with the idea for some al fresco dining at the end of our weekly ride but unfortunately he has to drop out.

Enthusiasm runs high. WhatsApp buzzing with camp fire cooking logistics and nosh choices.

The fine weather helps charm out Kersh and cCroxy . And Coley is now sufficiently recovered to join us. Marvellous. Its like getting the band back together.

Heavily laden bags steer us to an early visit to the camp site .

then the joy of a relatively dry …and a wee bit dusty …descent of charity to the Narnia turn. the setting sun creates a fantastic atmosphere on the Narnia descent

IMG_0527

….down to witches cottage ..or more properly Dimples Farm where the sharp eyed Mr K spots a little bit of a historical exhibit (see photo) . This humble ruin has history.

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-20 at 06.28.30

On to a loose descent of hardingland and all the way down to Teggs Nose reservoir .

A long winch back up past the Leathers and up the left hand side of the forest . Evening light getting better all the time .

UU still have not cleared all the trees but thankfully they are easy to get around now.

A baby crescent moon hangs in the sky.

IMG_0530

By the time Coley and I arrive at the start of charity the beer has been delivered and the advance part are hard at work.

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-20 at 06.31.55

Fire is going in no time, Troll has brought appetisers, The Doog a wee dram to celebrate his birthday and a truck load of craft beer .

WhatsApp Image 2018-04-20 at 06.32.38

he deserves a knighthood.

Some kind soul has left a BBQ grill in a local tree so in no time at all the bangers are sizzling on the fire and the banter gets in to full swing.

Butty brings ground sheets – we are properly organised !

IMG_0543

By midnight the departures start …but its a relatively mild descent to Macc . Still 13C when i get home !

A wonderful evening. We are blessed.

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Butty, Mr Inc, Bern, Slim, Stunt

Pub: 3 Sheds, Dunc & Joe

Route: BL, New Road, Chazza, Narnia, Hardingland, Kings Head

Conditions:
Cool & cloudy lower down, Raging winds higher up.

Notes:

A dull cloudy kind of day, but forecast is dry, and assembling at BL it’s an innocuous kinda evening.

Bern arrives in full winter gear wondering if he’s overdressed, as the rest of us a showing some (very pasty) leg flesh between three quarters and socks.

PTD arrives on freshly maintained kermit five, also looking equipped for winterness…what ho & why Que?

…well i rode up to charity last night and there was this nasty wind…eyes to the skies..seems ok here we think.

IMG_0500

Route choice is debated even longer than usual, due to the state of the forest, the state of the trails, the desire to do something a bit different, and the fact that much of the field had ridden all weekend.

By the time Slim is off the phone El Pres has taken charge and suggested Cat then Goyt…off we set.

Bern shoots off the front like a man possessed, the rest of us settle in for the long grind.

IMG_0497

Rounding the corner at Bull Hill, the conditions seem much  gloomier than normal, with atmospheric backdrops of the lower hills in mist and cloud…Hmm maybe going high is not such a good plan. Stunt and Butty debate trying to catch Bern before Charity to give us a plan B option, but the bolt is now a speck closing in on the chazza turn whist they are only just onto the straight before walker barn..

Sensibly Bern has stopped (as he is hot) at the layby not long afterward, by which time the wind is really biting, and he then needs to put it back on again. We catch up, a council of war decides that A PTD was right, B many of us are not wearing enough clothes, and C Chazza it is,  we turn back.

IMG_0508

A large group of other MTB’ers is ascending into the cloud ahead of us, and we briefly overlap as they regroup at the start of the offroad. There is much bleating (of sheep!) by this point, and the wind is now raging in the trees and we are in cold nasty cloud.

Outerlayers, buffs and the like are hastily donned, but some are less prepared than others, we set off to keep warm as soon as we can.

A split camp at the top, Butty and PTD lead the majority through the sneaky singletrack to Narnia, whilst Stunt and Slim take route one down chazza and across (wetter but faster!)

Spooky mist = great photos as the rest eventually emerge…wind damage making the route “interesting”

IMG_0520

Tricky light until Witches cottage – lights needed to see in the gloom, but anything remotely bright causing glare in the mist!

Butty drops a clanger at the gate onto hacked way lane…as a mere 7inch spanner slips from his bag (no relying on multi tools for this man!)

Hardingland dry and loose, we get overtaken by the other team at end past the stream, Mr Inc despairs of cheap light fittings, and El Pres discovers a puncture as we are about to set off for the pub.

IMG_0519

Early at the Kings Head, although glad of the warmth. IPA and Speckled hen are the answer, Burger envy, 4 puddings (top crumble!!) shows how many needed extra calories to replenish the reserves used to keep warm.

Great to see 3 sheds, Ribaldry had already broken out by the time Dunc appears, and Joe joins us in the Pub this week having threatened for several!

Winter is not finished with us yet! …but things could all change for next week???

IMG_3543

words by Alex, Pics by Pete & Butty

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Butty, TJ, Mr Inc, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, New Road, Cat, Danebower hollow, Cumberland clough, Standing Stone, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Dry, Mild, Still a lot of standing water in places.

Notes:

First ride in the light for many, and after a beautiful sunny day, an evening with mainly clear skies, and light breezes.

Assembling at BL (with Joe again seeing us off), much chat, excitement at pie provisioning, rapid recovery of presidential mustard, and a quick trip for some cooking whisky!

In honour of a ride 6 years ago where we parked bikes in the snow (and nearly lost Joe down a snow hole!) El Pres leads us up high.

IMG_0440

The lighter evening brings new delights for the eyes and ears on the long ride up. Red tinged clouds on the horizon as the sun slowly sets, the eerie calls of the curlews, the angry buzz of the early season motorbikers, still the washed out watercolours of the moors still in faded winter clothing of grey, brown and insipid green, and the Wrekin, Long Mynd and the Clwyeds all clearly visible.

Regrouping at the tea rooms (and donning extra layers, as the wind up high has a sharp edge to it), we light up and head out across Danebower into wind.

Fences at the end have been repaired..entrance gate at Chumby has not!

My word chumby has got chunky over the winter!! big holes, big rocks and more bedrock steps have appeared. Those with big tyres and or big suspension very glad they had!

The gate by the waterfall has been repaired with new hinges..just a shame they are an inch too low, the gate grinding through the dirt to open and close!?

IMG_0459

Tis time to have assorted sausage rolls (from Troll’s travels), pork and black pudding pie, accompanied by English mustard, and washed down with Famous Grouse (which went very well with it all!!)

Refreshed (and possibly a little cold), Cumberland brook proved as challenging as the Clough, just with added water, and although running deeper than normal on the track, the Ford at the bottom was at normal levels.

IMG_0447

Still light in the sky against the sillouhette of the hills, trundling along wildboarclough, a big tree down over the stream still in place (the portion over the road having been removed).

Standing stone food order to Sutton hall suffers from comms failure part way through, and with trees down on all the available route options other than the road, we opt to secure the food via route 1.

New flagstone path from the garden gate feels like a red carpet to welcome us home.

IMG_0457

Lucan, Hoegarden and malted milk stout satisfy all varieties of thirst, food is devoured (crispy beef salad disappoints again, and El Pres bemoans the lack of chips with his cheese pie)

Much catching up, tales of skiing recent and plans to come, a predictable decent into raucousness with arrival of Dunc, and a very moderate uptake on final whisky.

Great to have TJ back, spring season starting well.

TNR 22-03-2018 Blown along t’shore

Crew: El Pres, Troll, Butty, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: Rainbow Bridge, Endon House climb, Lidgetts Lane, Bull Hill lane, Tearooms, Shining Tor, Pym Chair, Jenkin Chapel, Dead mans hill, Poachers

Conditions: Cool, Dry, Strengthening breeze

Notes:

It may technically be spring (equinox on the 20th) but not much sign of springlike weather, although “not raining, above 5C, not too windy” is as good as it gets of late!

A small crew, with plans to go high, partly for variety, and partly because the forest is going to be mostly out of action for quite a while.

Rendevous at RB goes well, Butty arrives with the still caped crusader Joe as we are overlapping with his commute once again. We put the world of baby chick management to rights! (well it is nearly Easter)

Phil arrives having managed to park at the right end of town 🙂

We choose a tearooms goyt plan, and head off, early worries about soft tyres ,squeaky bottom bracket & rubbing brakes soon banished.

Skies are cloudy with no moon evident, light in the west and glow from the plains, and snow bones against the field walls, makes for a slightly eerie atmosphere.

Breeze is picking up, but mostly cross to tail on the climb to the tea rooms, our small crew stringing out a bit, so much riding in ones own thoughts. Bright lights from walkers seen on Shutlingsloe, and the odd obscenity shouted in our direction from a small red car…Mr T???

Head wind on the final stretch to the tea rooms, extra layers rapidly donned, and a troll complaining of iffy quads.

Route replanned to avoid the climb out of the goyt…means up to shining tor and across the “Yorkshire Northshore”!

The wind is strong up there, a quick hunker down by the wall for Mrs B’s best parkin and some TNR winters gold, very welcome.

Time is a pressing so we hoist sail with the wind at our backs and head off.

Care over the waterbars (no one wants a puncture tonight!!) then it’s rapid going, even once off the slabs the trails are not too sloppy.

An amazing 15 mins later we are at Pyms chair, passing ducks in the puddle by the cattle grid!

Into wind down hill, some harder work on the hidden hills to the start of Ewrin lane, but then more tail wind for the final climbs.

Poachers for 9:10

Butcome gold rather quaffable, and Halloumi kebabs the meal of choice (even if table chips needed).

Dunc arrives on comedy BMX, a good degree of mild raucousness before braving the cold breeze on the way home.

IMG_0249

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete, Butty and Dunc

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Croxy, Butty, Troll, Bern, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route:
BL, Zig, Teggs, Lower forest tracks, Smithy

Conditions: Mild, Breezy, Froggy

Notes:

This week a temporary lull in overseas jaunts, illness & excuses generates a decent sized crew:

Croxy showing off the still shiny ebay SantaCruz, trail closures in Macc forest making singletrack worthy news, and our very own caped crusader, Super Commuter himself Joe to see us off.

Breeze  heady & stiff to make going high unpleasant, route discussions en route to meet Bern.

IMG_0252

Teggs gets more votes than chazza, so we head there – PTD get buzzed by an owl halfway down, we all get a buzz from the lack of traction lower down!

Impressive new wall on the upper reservoir..path diversion will soon be gone?

Lots  of amphibians dotted across the roads..El Pres and Bern take pride in warning us all of every one!

TNR 15th March 2018

Food ordered at the Smithy, we look to local knowledge and attempt to find a way round.

UU have not shirked on health and safety…impressive work on fencing off routes and signage…far less impressive the lack of any visible tree clearing!!

There are some big patches of many trees down, so these are going to take a while to clear.

IMG_0254

We do find enough open trails to do some loops lower down..good for variety, and a good night too for wildlife spotting, lots of owls, deer and more frogs and toads.

As usual we are well looked after, although sitting close to the fire was a bit too warm!

Fat sprat an excellent session beer, some early leavers for Friday responsibility.

Dunc arrives at the pub later than usual, and Pete and Phil enjoy choosing the whisky.

TNR 15th March 2018

Chilly on the descent, but actually quite mild lower down.

Spring equinox almost upon us 🙂

TNR 8th March 2018 : Do you get my drift ?

IMG_0214

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew: Butty, Slim, El Pres, Troll, PTD

Pub: Stunt, Dunc & (the lesser spotted) Croxy

Route: BL , Zig Zags, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone , a bit of a diverse route down through the forest, Sutton Hall

IMG_0220

Conditions:
Drizzle subsides by the start of the ride, a bit cold high up, fresh rideable snow at the top of the forest . Bliss.

Notes:

I arrived at BL at 18:26 – early for once. Everybody else was late .

It stopped raining .

We climbed following the classic route

IMG_0225

We found fresh snow in the forest and the grassy strip down the side of charity had a good covering and was excellent to ride .

After the exit to Narnia , we tried the proper charity again .

Drifts and slush made it tough going for a bit but that quickly gave way to more grip .

Chazza extension was fun, with a couple of “squeaky bum” moments to help you focus .

As we rode the road to standing stone we encountered a snow drift blocking the whole road with a pool of water inches deep. Yuck.

On t’other side the gate had been padlocked. No doubt to protect Joe Public , or perhaps UU from legal cases. We hadn’t gone too far towards the Shutlingsloe Exit before we encountered the first of many fallen trees….

IMG_0229

We tried going around a few of them , we tried going over them ….but we admitted defeat and retraced our steps towards Standing stone but hopped the fence and took the fire road down …this again was fresh snow fun until we encountered more fallen evergreens .

We scrambled around a couple , we crawled under a couple ….with the help of a strong troll to hold one of them up .

IMG_0230

Finally we got free and beat a hasty exit towards Sutton Hall.

Here the meal of choice was Crispy Beef . Apparently not up to par this week. Good job we got some table chips in!
Washed down with Hoegaarden , Black Grouse Stout .

IMG_0237
IMG_0238

This evening we were blessed with three “pub only” chaps : Croxy , Alex and Dunc.

IMG_0240

Mr Palmer managed to rejuvenate the dying fire – so we could gather around the fireplace and talk b&ll&cks.

IMG_0235

And then he got out the vouchers to get us all a discount on the bill!

TNR 1st March 2018 – Spring delivers Armageddon

Words based upon Butty’s Whatsapps
Photos and Video – Butty et al

Crew: Butty, TJ, Dunky, Chris, Bern.
Pub: Kersh.

Stats: 1 x puncture (TJ), 1 x loose crank (Dunky).

Route: RB to Endon hall climb, Kerridge to Lidgetts Lane, U-turn & retrace, down Endon hall and back through Bolly to the Vale.

Notes:
Tough going through Middlewood snow drifts for the Poynton boys meant a renegotiation of RV to the RB.
A puncture further delayed Butty and TJ however RV was well timed. Crew of five meeting and starting off around 7pm.

Going was even slower across fields towards Endon, some drifts but it was the powerful biting winds causing the delay.
Some relief going up through Endon and onto Kerridge road.

Half way along paused for good deed of the evening; moving rocks and debris from a residents collapsed wall out of the way.
Climbing Lidgetts we thought we had entered a hurricane.

Ploughing through all but the deepest drifts it was difficult to see and ice crystals sand blasted our faces.

WhatsApp Video 2018-03-01 at 19.59.41

Wind at the apex of Lidgetts was powerful but nothing compared to the intensity on the descent, a literal definition of face ache.

WhatsApp Video 2018-03-01 at 20.02.04

It had taken a hour to get here and looking at the large drifts on the bridleway and even more powerful wind it seemed best to turn back.
Before the climb Dunky discover very loose cranks so choose to push up and wheel down.

If only he’d realised; The rest of us had no need to pedal because mostly it was “wind assist” with such powerful winds at one point Duncan’s bike took off as he held onto one hand grip, a moment with a kite bike!

On the backside (of Lidgetts) Funky went ahead to meet at the pub. The rest descended the Endon track. The snow made the descent much more fun than usual. Regrouping at the closed Bulls Head we went onto oure fallback – The Vale.

Significant events in the pub were presidents hair frozen into his helmet and Kersh making an appearance

However it was cold inside so we were unimpressed with the (edited out expletive) barman who would not add coal to the fire. He also closed the pub early as he lives in Bolton and so wanted to get off early. WTF ?

Middlewood ride home involved negotiating newly downed trees, bigger drifts and TJ throwing a cornice around!

A wee dram or two really helped but it did take an hour and half for a twenty minute journey home.

: Pete

Crew: Butty, TJ, PTD, Troll, Pete

Route : RB – Clarke Lane corner – Endon House Track – Lidgetts Lane- Rainow – Ascent to jumper Lane – Top of Blaze Hill – New route back to Oakenbank Lane – Poachers snicket descent – Beeston Brow ascent – Cobbles descent – The Vale

Conditions : dry and cold

Stats : One Stuck Seatpost

Notes :
It is a rare treat when El Capitan of the Southern Boys (PTD) suggests a 6:45pm RB rendezvous. It works for me.

It’s dry, cold and starlit. And five is a good number. A local route with a twist….Butty has a plan.

IMG_0186

This involves a quick visit to jumper Lane, then up to the top of Blaze hill to find the mystical track which will return us to the start of Jumper Lane.
Mission accomplished, and we find a capped mine in the process. A little bit of adventure in familiar territory.

And a novel ascent of Beeston Brow from the Pott shrigley Rd .

Excellent pies in the Vale. Bollington has done us proud. And Endurance IPA locally brewed (5.1%) to boot 🙂 .

IMG_0186

God is indeed in his heaven.

Duncan joined us on his lads baby bmx. How bizarre.

IMG_0186

A mini AOE is encouraged by Dunc and the Poynton Posse.

IMG_0186

Home by midnight – in time to get a good snap of the moon.

Lunacy 22nd Feb 2018

TNR 15th Feb 2018 – Chilled

words & photos by Pete (mostly)

IMG_2913

Crew : Pete, El Pres, TJ, Butty , Troll , Bern

Route :
BL – Zig Zags – Rear Entrance Teggs – RHS descent – Leathers – Nessit – Trentabank – climb – Rezzies – Learthers

Conditions : Cold and clear with a stiff breeze. Close to freezing at Nessit.

Stats :
One chain jammed behind the cassette – Pete, 25cl Gordons, 1ltre Tonic , El Pres frozen lemon slices , one whole lotta calories

Notes :

A simple circuit with six of us middle aged chaps to toast Dan’s birthday.

A climb up to Blakelow Rd to pick up “Bern the Regular”, a jammed chain very soon after.

IMG_2913

Note to self…..Wednesday night drive drain renewal is all very well , but a test ride on a Thursday Night will always end in a degree of faff.

My thanks to Butty and El Pres for their patience and help in unjamming a very stuck chain .

Which is worst , faff due to neglect of maintenance ? or faff due to lack of full adjustment of a newly fitted cassette, chain, jockey wheels and chain rings ??

A very slippy descent of Teggs nose on the RHS , with several sideways moments . Up to the Leathers to put in an early order for 9pm Nosh . Its wonderfully warm and welcoming inside …but we have our duty ahead of us this evening.

Reverse Nessit it is then, with patches of well trodden snow now turned into wet ice much care was needed.

At Dan’s bench Chris was master of ceremonies and once more we toasted the memory of our fine friend.

IMG_2913

TJ produced another gadget , a l@ser pointing torch thing. Very useful for pointing at the various constellations – it was a fantastically clear night.

With a stiff breeze as well as our stiff Gin and Tonic’s we did not linger .

Fortunately only the lead-in to the downhill route was icy , and we managed to get back to Trentabank without mishap .

a quick gratuitous extra bit back up towards (but not as far as) Standing Stone , then to the pub.

First surprise was a cheeky starter of baked Camembert – yum. This , after all the fine chunks of Mrs Butty’s Rocky Road we had at Nessit, left little room for the monster burgers we had ordered.

IMG_2913

El Pres even asked for a “doggy bag” for his leftovers !

TNR 8-2-2018 Winter vs TNR

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Dunc & Nic

Route: BL, zig zags, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, Church House

Conditions: Heavy Rain, lots of water, mud & some ice higher up.

Stats: 6 Brave riders, 2 offs, 2 lighting strikes and 12 extremely wet gloves!

This week dry and sub zero had turned to mild and very wet come Thursday.

Weather radar and falling barometers convinced several that twas a night to polish your cranks rather than venture out, but a wavering Butty is temped by the carrot of Winters Gold, and the Stick of Eric’s verdict on those not riding.

Cometh the hour cometh the Goat! Yes the Troll proudly brings out the Capra as new bike syndrome trumps iffy forecast.

Stunt is also still finessing setup on the KTM, and the rest are simply just manly for arriving whatever the weather.

Definitely an evening where winter is trying to show its full grimness.

Strike two (if the weather forecast is number one)..is the sudden and total failure of Stunts front light..it decides not to switch on again have got to BL all fine.

It gets stowed in a pack for trying again when its a bit warmer and drier.

Rain is quite light at BL, but by the time we have splashed our way up the zig, its time for full waterproofs.

Strike three..heading up the Tarmac to Charity proper rain starts to arrive sideways at high velocity, we shelter at the start of the off road section getting some respite from the trees, and share commiserations with 4 Nancy’s who are also defying Winter tonight.

Serious water running down Charity as we climb….snow melt as well as rain, and ice is still about too…as we go into the cloud!

Strike 4…Ice under the water on the way down just after the steepest bit…El Pres and Slim take heavy offs, and El Pres’s front light mount takes a bashing.

Counter strike…Winters Gold at Narnia Bench…with a toast of F*ck Winter!!

Tis not a night for staying out longer than necessary…as wet gloves are being squeezed of excess water before going back on cold hands (shudders)

Down to witches cottage without further incident, then Hardingland and lower teggs and to the warmth of the fire at the Church House,Wet, cold , battered, poorly lit and in some cases bloody, we have had a proper ride!

All the establishments remaining pies are ordered, washed down with 6X or White rat. Gloves and buffs adorn the fireguard (and there are regular ouch’s from Butty as he dutifully turns them – wet and hot is hurty!)

Dunc and Nic arrive..by car, and get some stick, but more for the Tartan jumper abomination adorning Biggus’s ample torso.

Tales of the evening, estimate the quantity of water absorbed by waterproof gloves!

the ceremonial showing of the presidential bloodied and bruised forearm, retro ribaldry and Laphroaig to finish.

Horrible relayering and still raining cats and dogs all the way home.

Good luck to Nic and Dunc on the Edale bike and run trailquest event on Sunday.

Stunts light never did come back on (warranty claim in progress)
