TNR 25-01-2018 Wheely Slippy

Crew: Stunt, Bern

Pub: Dunc, Nic

Route: Blakelow Road, Zig, Teggs, Smithy, Witches Cottage, Charity, Narnia, Witches Cottage, Smithy.

Conditions: Cool, little wind, wet & muddy trails.

Stats: One Off & Rear wheel disconnection (Bern)

Notes:

Stunt and the all new “regular events” Bern keep the TNR flag flying this week whilst others frolic in the snow covered Alps!

Despite rain earlier in the day, there are clearish skies, half a moon, stars and (being suitably dressed) it doesn’t feel cold or nasty πŸ™‚

Attempting to keep to mainly rocky trails we head to Teggs where we find the grass pretty treacherous on the top bit, then drier than we expected on the middle, and then super soft and slippy on the lower part!

Bern has an off on the steep slope between the end of the main Teggs track, and the track to the reservoirs car park. On getting up he finds his back wheel has detached! Unrolling the impressive Big Bern tool kit he sets to work and solves it himself!!

Stunt pushes back up from the bottom just in time to record this momentus event πŸ™‚

Failure is laid squarely at the door a the bike shop who had recently “maintained” the bike!

All is still good as we pop into the Smith and order food (just escaping in time before Bern ordered a swift half!)

Long grind up too Charity, but enjoying the views and peaceful forest.

Charity down is very lumpy…the mega snow melt & rain having washed all the mud away!

Time begins to press, so we turn to do Narnia…its less muddy than we expect, but still slithery fun.

On down the fire road to the pub and a warm fire. Overhang the ale of choice, and the boar steak, and venison sausages are excellent too. Dunc & Nic arrive to bring ribaldry, mirth and tall tales. Bern heads home before a mini axis of evil leads to two rounds of Glenfiddich.

Car park barrier is across by the time we head back, with the usual racing between the pub only riders with all that spare energy. (we avoid the gunco drop this week).

An evening that you were glad you came out πŸ™‚

TNR 18-01-2018 Snowing Cats and Pigs

IMG_0078

Words by Alex , Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Stunt

Route: BL, New Road, Tea Rooms, Bottom of the Oven, Standing Stone, Halfpipe fire road, Ressies, Sutton Hall

Conditions:
Light Snow, very wet through to deep snow depending on height

Stats: One post pub off (El Pres)

Notes:

It had been sub five and wet all day…with many a TNR’r off Alpward early saturday…so only a brave few ventured out.

Weather geeks had been glued to the buxton webcams to assess the chance of rideable snow, conclusion definitely at the Cat, possibly lower.

The only way to find out is to head uphill and see!

Stunt on fresh bikeage of the 27.5+ full suss variety on the alledged sweet spot of 2.6″ rubber…

IMG_0078

All in full waterproofs and anti death jackets.

A slightly delayed start due to new bike setup tweaks in Pete’s garage from the Tythy duo.

The grey sign was flashing red on Buxton road, and the road was also coned off…excellent less traffic to worry about.

Slush on the road soon after..not that deep and we were riding in wagon tyre tracks on an inch or so without any issue.

The odd 4×4, a few brave 2 wheel drive’s and the snow started to come down thicker.

By Charity snow was settling on the fields, but we carried straight on to find the “good stuff”

Progress a little slower than normal..you can feel the extra effort of not riding on tarmac.

Ho lights in the distance…Cheshire Police highway patrol are coming down towards us, they slow for some words of advice, and we are advised that it’s nasty higher up and to head back.

We are left to discuss this intel, whilst pedalling carefully. We come across a car on it’s side that has driven straight on at a corner into a field earlier in the day. It must have been a white out?

Snow is thicker on the fields, and it’s quite hard to work out where we are as the landscape just looks different all white.

Before we know it we are at the tearooms πŸ™‚

IMG_0078

Time to test the snow…and it’s already too deep…plus the snow is now horizontally in our faces…the good officers were spot on..it’s nasty.

Advice taken we head down to the bottom of the oven (wishing we had brought ski goggles).

There is more snow on the road here than the main road, making it fun/interesting depending on your level of grip!

Bottom of the oven, out of the wind, and less snow, feels a lot better. It is also a lot wetter under the snow, and there is still a huge puddle by standing stone car park.

We ring Sutton hall to order food, then at the gate to “Half-Pipe alley” Pete brings out the sub five hip flasks for a welcome tot of Brandy πŸ™‚

IMG_0078

Snow on the trees, just the right amount of snow, fewer flakes in your face…its beautiful under our lights, a twisted shed track from a big machine throws shadows like a long dead whale skeleton (but Pete is too cold to get the camera out).

This is ace! minutes later after the usual blast down and around the ressies…there is just a lot of cold wet water!

Sutton Hall to thaw out, bizzarely all the ales on are light hoppy ones (where’s the plum porter winter beer!!)

Post food we retire to the comfy chairs by the fire…tactical coke replaced by tactical coffee, and El Pres is the one almost stacking Zeds!

All available layers on for the ride home..and watch out for the potholes on Gunco lane!!

Proper winter ride πŸ™‚

TNR 11-01-2018 A Forest Full of Walkers

IMG_0054

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Bern, Troll, Stunt…and eventually Coley

Pub: PTD, Dunc

Route: BL, Black road, Blakelow road, Zig Zags, Walker Barn, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Shutlingsloe Steps, Back of the Moon, Nessit Hill, Middle track, Ressies, Sutton Hall.

Conditions:
Sub 5, still, misty later, very muddy

Stats: Offs 1 Pete

Notes:

Second ride of the year…and a small Eric friendly crew :-), food pre ordered at Sutton Hall to ensure we don’t fall foul of early kitchen closing in Jan.

IMG_0038
Library Photo

Butty mysteriously messages to say he is coming on unconventional bike…sadly no clown bike, but the ever dependable Fargo adventure bike (all the rest being currently out of action)

No choice but to take him down charity then!

Route to be decided when we know if the hill fog is bad or not.

Initially we swing by Coleys as we are ready to goΒ  on time, and he’s not here..but no sign so we carry on, already warm before the start of the steep stuff!

Puddles and mud not too bad on the zig, and the zag also not too greasy. A few layers unzipped as it’s not as cold as we feared.

Chatting and catching up mostly done by the time we regroup at the start of Charity…as we see bobbing lights approaching up hacked way lane. Turns out to be 3 walkers, gently running with a dog. We set off so as not to be in their way…only for them to overtake most of us and share the trail to the top.

IMG_0018
Library Photo

Downhill we gain a lead…despite there still being big ice patches in places…only for some of our number to stop and adjust tyre pressures and they (now having gained more followers) to be hard on our heels!

El pres correctly anticipates that they will ascend forest chapel, while we do the extension.

At standing stone we are doing really well on time, so we decide to do the shutlingsloe steps, and loop back on back of the moon.

Finally clear of walkers group 1…we meet another crowd (with different dog) coming back down from Shutlingsloe as we are pushing up the final steep bits (legs getting a bit tired with all the climbing tonight!)

Must be some major new years resolutions causing all this traffic tonight!!

IMG_0054

Pigford moor…shockingly muddy, cattle still up there churning up the soft ground, plus big tractor tracks! Unrideable in parts (even with big tyres)

Singletrack across the tops and down is greasy and slippy in extremis…much feathering of brakes, occasional sideways drifting, and the odd low speed off!

Funnily enough the rigid bikes are down first..showing that suspension doesn’t help in all conditions.

Walkers 2 passed again as we do the singletrack from the step to the S bends,

Mist coming down as we get to Dan’s bench where we have time, but not the supplies for a sub five winter warmer :-(.

IMG_0054

El Pres salvages a discarded mudguard on the middle section, before the final blast round the ressies (more walker lights coming down from the rangers station), where we finally connect with Coley.

Mobberly 1924 the ale of choice, PTD arrives just before our food, and Dunc not long after.

Skiing talk, new bike talk, and general banter ensues.

IMG_0054

Last orders arrives in a flash…definitely cold on the way home.

TNR 4th January 2018 : Go big & Recycle

IMG_2237

Words and pics by Pete & El Pres

Crew: El Pres, Troll, Pete, Dunc

“In the pub” :
Bern

Route : BL , old Buxton road, new Buxton road, Tea Rooms, Cat &Fiddle, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, Nessit and Ye Olde Kings Head and then the Presidential Residence.

Stats:one failed light, one extremely shonky gate

Weather : Clear and cold, -1c when we got home.

Notes:
Rendezvous for 4 at BL. News from Butty that he is dropping out .
Our mission is to ride and return to “ethically dispose” of the Storm brewing beer left over from the New Years Eve bash at Mark and Ginny’s.

IMG_2237

it’s a tough job but someone’s got to do it .
And by now we have already ordered curry for 5 from Indian John.
So, it’s time to burn some serious calories and generate a hearty appetite.
My pleas for a shorter ride are overridden by El Pres.

We set off for the Cat.
The wind is at our backs , so it’s an easier ascent than we anticipated. When we reach the start of Danebower Hollow it is a damn sight colder…time for another layer. We re-group at the half-way gate, tyre pressures are dropped and we press on for the fast and furious descent to the 54.

A wonderful spooky supermoon appears from behind swirling clouds as we ride the short stretch of tarmac to the start of Chumby.

IMG_2237

Pic is from a couple of days earlier

The gate at the entrance to the track has attained a new level of shonkyness. Lacking hinges it now has to be man handled open or shut. The positioning is crucial, as I found out when I leant back on it and it gave way. This was the source of much mirth.

Boobytrapped Shonky Gate of Chumby Clough

We had one fortunate, if slightly unprepared, Troll in our midst. Fortunate in that his light failed ( or rather the battery was drained) on the early part of Chumby. El Pres to the rescue with a generous loan of his bar mounted light.

The Clough was particularly chunky , as though someone had deliberately roughed it up.
Full marks and bonus points to Dunc who seems to negotiate this technical descent on his rigid 29er Genesis Fortitude better than some of us (no names, no pack drill) on full suspension steeds.

On to Standing stone, then Nessit ( it would be rude not to) and the fire track down. Next stop Ye Olde Kings Head . Just for a cheeky one, or in Duncs case a cheeky one and a bit.

IMG_2237

His new tactic is to sup a good portion of his beer and then fake accidentally knocking over his glass and spilling the remainder. This in full knowledge of that the bar lady will give him a refill free of charge.
We begin to consider a second pint, but sense ( and hunger) prevails and we press on to the Presidential homestead.

IMG_2237

Here we find that Charlotte has our carry out all sorted into serving dishes. β€œStunt Butty” has arrived in the shape of big events Bern. The stove is beautifully warm.
We are truly blessed.
The freebie ale flows freely, the generously sized carry out gets demolished with ease….and our host even brings out his personal a-of-e to share with us.
Beware of trolls bearing tequila!
I seem to recall there being a tale behind the acquisition of this particular liquor…but it all gets a bit misty in my memory at this point.

Our thanks to Mr McD for the donated ale, Charlotte and El Pres for their hospitality and also to whoever donated the dubious Tequila.

TNR 28th December 2017 : feasting, frozen assets & faff

IMG_9919

Words and pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Troll, TJ, Butty , Pete, Bern

Route : BL , Zig Zags, old Buxton road track, charity, extension, standing stone, lower fire road (inc new Bench stop), rezzies, Sutton Hall

Stats: one phantom tubeless faff, one frozen rear mech faff, one disintegration of drive chain faff…all Butty.
Pete was early and the first at BL muster point.

Clear and cold, -1c when we got home.

The last TNR of 2017

It was shaping up as a re run of the TNR Xmas cocktails ride the previous week but…..Butty tyre faff conspired to build in a bit too much delay.
He stopped to put a bit of air in his tubeless rear tyre. He stopped a second time to repeat the process .
By the bottom of charity extension he decided it would have to be Tubed !
Only to discover…it already had one inside! Our first instance of “phantom tubeless” ?
Butty’s
Troubles would later move on to more drive train hassle. Resulting in a post 1am return to base in Poynton.

IMG_9919

The descent of Charity Lane was massive fun, we followed Pauls instructions to β€œ drop you seats , go fast and get your arse wet β€œ ..is it water?, is it ice?, it all adds to the fun.

We did manage to squeeze in a wee celebratory snack and tipple before the descent to Sutton Hall, and it was truly a group effort .
Here is the Tally :

Our very own gastronomic Troll – Home smoked venison
Bernard- chocolate cake with almonds
TJ – Home made Apple cake
TJ – Rusty nails made with Dalwhinnie
PTD – Whiskey macs

IMG_9919

El Presidente showed excellent operational leadership skills and phoned in our food order to Sutton Hall as we quaffed …

IMG_9919

and in no time at all we were in the welcome warmth and gathered around the warmth of the fireplace.

IMG_9919

And for once I managed to take control of fire replenishment without invoking the wrath of the pub management .
Hoegarden and Xmas Ale were the order of the day. No AofE at SH….although I believe a select one happened on Blakelow Rd .

TNR 21-12-2017 Christmas Cocktails

Riders: El Pres, PTD, Dr S, TJ, Butty, Troll, 3 Sheds, Coley, Croxy, Bern, Mark, Stunt, G

Pub: Nic, Doog, Mawds, Si, Dunc

Silverback: Lee, Vaughan, Shaun

Route: BL, New road, Charity lane, Narnia, ye olde Kings Head

Conditions: Very Mild, Hill fog, Muddy

Stats: 5 cocktails pre pub

Top turnout for the winter solstice/christmas dinner ride, not at all affected by the choice of pub, live music from Lee, and colourful cocktails from PTD!

The lack of seasonal weather may have affected the traditional decoration/silly hat wearing (too hot?).

Despite some moisture in the air Croxy does come for the ride, on Helens bike..and despite mega faffing has managed to tinsel up πŸ™‚

PTD promises 3 cocktails, and both the Troll &Β  Mark has also brought one each…and we need to be at the pub by 8:30.

We try for a chazza – standing stone – dans bench route.

Folk set a crisp pace…although PTD encumbered by significant liquid load, becomes tail end charlie.

By Walker Barn we are in cloud, and with wind direction in our favour, its decided to have a first stop at the top of Charity.

Cocktail 1 (Phil M) Creme Anglais….Shot glass..Yellow ..sweet and smooth

Cocktail 2 (PTD)Β  Ponsettia…Long glass…Black..Cranberry, Prosecco, Blue Curaco

Time marches on, we amend route to Narnia Bench then pub

Charity down in low vis, very wet & rocky, Narnia even thicker fog!

Cocktail 3 (PTD) Kiss n Tell…Long glass..Bright Green..Orange juice, Galliano, Blue Curaco & Vodka

Cocktail 4 (PTD) Burnside…Shot glass..Maroon…Gin, dry Vermouth, Cherry Brandy

Cocktail 5 (Mark) Baby guiness..Shot glass…black n white…coffee & cream liquers

..there may also have been a hip flask going around!!

Narnia to witches cottage super slippery…but we all make it in one piece πŸ™‚

PTD almost gets lost on the descent to the road!

Landlord or Rudolph, 3 course dinner & 2 sets from Silverback ..now with added drummer Shaun! We are treated to new covers from Crowded House, Men at Work (antipodean theme here) ,REM a non Sax version of Baker street plus old favourites like Pedal to the Metal and Sunshine.

Much Air Sax, Air Drumming, singing along and general merriment. Tireless service from the lovely bar staff keep us fed and watered, Croxy becomes chief accountant, and time flies.

Some wobbly moments on the way home for many…and a delicate start to friday!

Brilliant evening πŸ™‚

The Biddulph Moor snowy adventure edition!

Hosted by Phil & Ruth on a snowy weekend…much nervous watching of geeky weather sites during Saturday, an increase in 4×4 choice, a reduction from 2 to 1 minibuses, and a live run through of road conditions posted just before dark by Phil.

Outcome – bring your boots to walk in and out from Hot Lane to the cottage, but we should be fine…

Barracks Lane 7pm and the minibus collects theΒ  intrepid travellers (now including the tythy contingent) Chris sits up front to ensure our Stockport based driver takes the right route (via Congleton, Biddulph Grange and up) and we are off!

IMG_5351

With only one missed turn up the ungritted hot lane we climb..past the foxhound until the wheels spin on the transit..we will be walking the last 100m, but we can see the cottage πŸ™‚

Parked up at the top of the farm track are the Poynton massif, and the West Bollington brigade πŸ˜‰

De booted and coated Phil has welcoming cocktails…Prosecco and Chambord, and/or White Port Brandy & Vodka with citrus twist & Rasberry on a stick πŸ™‚

IMG_5351

Guests keep on arriving, Dr S and Justine have walked up from the bottom of the hill, Dave and Jan, Doog & Eunice have got close by car.

A kitchen full of foil covered trays, the new Glass connecting extension to the Garage/barn now the perfect (cool) temperature for the exotic collection of beers..conversation and drinks floweth.

Starters are passed around – careful of the nutty cream cheese balls..and the Filo wrapped Chorizo is divine.

IMG_5351

Main courses are warmed, rice is cooked, and sprouts are fried(with bacon, onion and garlic butter)! The table groans under the weight of curry, fruity lamb, amazing pastry covered pies and roasts, veg skewers and a creamy potato snowman!!

IMG_5351

…and if we thought the mains were good…pudding! Two bowls needed for those having a little bit of everything!!! Bernards chestnut log recipe was shared afterwards, but every cake and pudding a little masterclass in its own way (the brandy butter ice cream to top it all a personal favourite).

IMG_5351

Meanwhile in the beer tasting lab…a christmas beer tasting lovely but looking cloudy and off, light ales hiding dark coffee flavours, smooth creamy triples hiding significant alcohol content, smoky beer, and a red sour beer that edged over the “out of your comfort” zone and into that part of the brain ever scarred by off cider experiences!

IMG_5351

For those on tea later on, herbologist Ruth would play with other palate senses with milk oolong and the wonderfully named Damien Grey!

Mawds kindly tests all the doors to find the exit, and eventually we get the call from the minibus driver to kit up and set off into the cold. Slush has now turned icy, and with plenty of illumination fromΒ  hand held bike lights we gingerly walk the verges or centre of the lane down to the pub where the bus is just arriving (we are very pleased to see him).

Cosy on the way home (and time for a few cheeky zzz’s from Pete) before bracing night air for the last walk home.

Great night, great turnout and plans all work out perfectly.

IMG_5351

Thanks to Phil & Ruth for hosting, Chris for minibus logistics, and everyone for such amazing food, drink and company πŸ™‚

TNR 7-12-2017 Less weather than expected

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, TJ, Stunt

Route: Hurdsfield Road, Cliff Lane, New Road, Charity Lane, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, Normal between the DH course descent, Ressies, Kings Head

Notes:

The first of Storm Caroline’s wet petticoats had just been through as heavy rain/just about snow ahead of the BL rendevouz. Crew prepped for heavy weather…to find clear skies, light breeze and still above zero.

Opting to climb on tarmac we show TJ & PTD the direct delights of Cliff Lane (doing it in the cold seemed better than on a warm summer evening).

Wind still not too bad, and also at our backs we are nicely warm at the start of Charity.

First signs of snow here..but just the odd patch from a very light sprinkling. Three deer in the trees see our lights then move off slowly.

Very very wet going down so no ice this week πŸ™‚ but lots of big rocks and quite slippy!

A group of riders await our passing at the bottom.

Extension also greasy. At Standing stone a lot of standing water by the car park, and the first hint of a freshening wind into our faces.

A civilised stop at the bench on the way to the S bends for some hot fruity refreshment with a hint of Brandy…leading to philosophical thoughts…a theme for the evening.

On and up to Dan’s bench..first sign of white on the ground here with some flurries coming in. lights lower down on the other side maybe those bikers from before?

Standard decent..interesting big rock / soft mud combo makes the drop to the track fairly intense (Stunt admits to feeling somewhat battered on a rigid..even with tractor tyres)

Round the ressies the lights catch up with us and follow us to the smithy. peeling off we head down into a cold wind to the warmth of the kings head.

Virtually empty..we have it to ourselves πŸ™‚ less impressed that Landlord is off, so wincle Rambler the best of the rest. Food excellent, conversation very high brow and a total lack of ribaldry!!

Wet sleety sh*t on the ride home

TNR 30-11-2017 Big events Bern’s Birthday Bash

Crew: El Pres, Troll, Dunc, Mark, Butty, Dr S, Slim, Stunt

Party: Bern, Doog, Joe, Mawds, Steve Felbaum, Croxy, El Pud, 3 Sheds, TJ

Route: Berns, Zig Zags, Charity Lane, Narnia, Hardingland, Langley, choice of routes, Berns!

Conditions: Sub zero, dry, icy in places

Bern celebrates a Big Birthday with a TNR back to his, to give it it’s true title its BBBBBB

Big Berns Bikes and Beer Birthday Bash…but one can get carried away! πŸ™‚

Good to see the lesser spotted Butterworth back as the nest building season is almost over.

(and a TJ just back from migration to warmer climes)

Mark wins the “most prepared” prize with pogies on the handlbars to keep hands toasty warm.

Bern serves prosecco of mulled wine to toast the start of the ride (but is not riding as the icy conditions = a 2 hour journey back from Huddersfield). It’s very tempting to stay…but troops are marshalled and we head off for a brisk up and down route.

Crisp and crunchy on the zig, and we take the turn into the Zag carefully in case of ice…but it’s pretty dry. Charity tarmac in good shape, as is the off road up and initially down, but then “ICE!!” and there is 100m of hugging one side or other whilst edging the sheet of slippy stuff.

Narnia running fast as the mud is frozen..

Elephants spotted on Hardingland…

well Dr S asked what the big grey things were! Maybe the one contact lens in, one out approach to mono vision has gone a bit far?Β  ( or maybe it was the rectangular stones at the various “Steps”)

More delicate traversing past black ice on the lane past the farm .

Lower teggs back to mud, until the steps to the stream..the first two of which are fully iced over…luckily first rider is not going full gas and the peleton is steered around it.

At Langley a top gear challenge emerges..Coalpit lane, or Gunco lane and back up Blakelow?

It’s closer than you might think (lower Blakelow is seriously steep!) but the down and back up wins over the up and back down. Butty tries the Hollins and that’s a lot slower!

Bern wows us with garlic bread, irish stew and/or pumpkin and lentil with salad. Bolly best on tap and together with the non riders it’s a full house!

Much catching up and chat, all too soon we’ve drunk all the beer, eaten all the food – Nicola’s Parkin the stuff of legend!! and the journey home has to be faced up to.

The Tythy contingent head off together, stunt discovers that his “your big bright light is only as good as…” moment this week is a loose adjusting screw..easily sorted on Higher Fence av, Pete discovers clipping in too early at low speed can have consequences πŸ™‚

Feeling very wintery in a good way…and clean bike bonus!

TNR 23-11-2017 Forest Rush

IMG_9779

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Troll, 3 Sheds, Mark, Stunt & Dunc

Route: BL, Zig, Teggs, Leathers, Witches Cottage, Charity & extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, Ressies, Leathers.

Conditions: Cold, Clear, Wet & muddy trails

Stats: 1 Off (dunc), 1 Puncture (El Pres)

Notes:

This week we feel we are properly prepared! Sub 5 supplies – Tick, Stunt’s Brakes operational (new pads front and back, bled & topped up) – tick, suitable clothing for cold night – tick. Pete last to arrive – tick πŸ™‚

Dunc will be meeting us en route, a start of chazza rendevouz agreed.

We head out legally the wrong way out of BL due to a road closure πŸ™‚

Chat begins with the fabled replacement of the Trolls Yeti – it’s going to happen..but there may be last minute distractions???

No overheating this week – it’s a climb to warm up type of night, plenty of water on the trails, so soggy bottoms may be an issue!

Teggs is ok to start but super slippy lower down, ressie renovation means a temporary footpath, we spurn the temporary steps…but learn the hard way that this is not a shortcut! 2 lots of hike a bike over walls and we are back on track.

Food ordered at the Smithy, but a tough target of being back by ten to nine means there will be no slacking permitted!

Owls and/or Foxes provide the sound effects on the climb to the cottage, and there is a good view across the plain under a crescent orange moon! Legs and lungs are on the limit by the time we’re at the start of chazza though, no Dunky yet , but he’s not too far away, so we set off and let him chase us down.

Chazza running well, although Stunt discovers that no matter how bright your light is..it’s not much help if it starts pointing at your front wheel after a big bump!!! Luckily helmet mounted light prevents disaster πŸ™‚

Extension dry but gnarly, those doing the singletrack from the shutlingsloe steps to the S bends report some big front wheel eating puddles near the end!

Dans bench for the promised Winter’s gold…rather fine it is too..and Dunc arrives perfectly on time for his wee glass πŸ™‚ He’s had to work hard to catch up..but apparently this is a good thing as there is some work frustration to work off. This theme is carried on into the downhill as he goes flying past a warp speed…how he makes it around the slimy berm is anyones guess.

IMG_9773

Stunt is rather the opposite as his front light slips again!!

Down the path and round the ressie to be on time…but a “burp splat aargh” from Dunc tells us that he’s literally ridden his luck too far, and landing a little jump loses too much tyre air and gains a layer of mud down one side πŸ™‚

IMG_9786

No major damage done other than to pride (and possibly aggravating an old shoulder injury?) the straggles limp in to find the El Presidente sorting a puncture.

IMG_9784

Adnams stout Old Ale is the beer of choice (two excellent dark beers in two weeks) so we dutifully drink the tap dry, food is excellent, and the emergency table chips we ordered “just in case” are devoured by a hungy Dunky despite his “don’t need food” protestations.

Warm fire is extremely welcome, as are the extra chips from the kitchen.

Ribaldry returns this week, re-igniting the Dunc ribaldry catalyst theory, starting a new theory that ribaldry is temperature sensitive (last week too cold in the pub?), and ignoring the lots of beer theory πŸ™‚

Music is eclectic and good (Black Sabbath to Madonna via Dire Straights and M People)

John looks after us extremely well, and after Troll upgrades our whisky from Bells to Talisker, some bonus apple pie appears!!!

No frost on the way home, although it is chilly, Pete wins the guess the midnight Tythy temp competition (3c)

BBBBBB next week
