TNR 05-07-2018 : Dust and Banjos

WhatsApp Image 2018-07-06 at 07.40.55

Words by Pete, Photos by Butty and Pete

Route : 28 BL , Buxton Road, Cat and Fiddle, Longnor , Back via Flash, Gradbach and Burntcliff Top (and a wonderfully named place ”Higher Bangs”) to the Rose and Crown at Allgreave.
Wildboarclough Valley – Standing stone – home .

Crew : El Pres, Butty, Slim, Troll….and eventually Mr K

Conditions : fantastic

It was a brilliant Presidential Plan .

Out to Longnor on road-ish bikes.

The weather was still excellent.

The views and the route the same.

Kestrel hovering as we climb away from the A54 junction towards the gap in Axe Edge .

Library Photo

Good to be clear of the Cat and Fiddle road and those bloody motorbikes

the White Peak limestone territory is so different. Fast, sweeping, single-car width roads with cattle grids .

A little stop for sausage roll and mustard near Chrome Hill. Rusty nail warm is still ok .

IMG_1281

Then the last three miles into Longnor.

Strange reception for the Troll in the chippy – they did not appreciate his wit . And he was the only enthusiast for pickled eggs.

IMG_1289

Kersh suddenly arrived just as our fish and chips and mushy were being served.

Posh carbon Bianchi road bike. Weighs nothing.
And he looks like he has been training.

IMG_1294

We take his suggested route back to find the Rose and Crown. It’s an excellent one as well. Rolling and quiet. Setting sun , good post sunset sky.

We finally reach the Rose and Crown on the A54 just after 10pm , with Mr K at the bar keeping the landlady in conversation. There are tall tales of 20th Century hangings at the HG. The beer is iffy, the lager more reliable .
We depart pub close to the witching hour , and it is a long (but not unpleasant) ride home .

late to bed but a memorable TNR !!

TNR 28-06-2018 Filling the footie vacuum

IMG_1234

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Stunt, 3 Sheds

Route: RB, Middlewood way, Shrigley Road, Under the Canal, West Parkgate, Paddock Cottage, Knightslow woods, Bowstones, Gritstone Trail, 1975 stone, Sponds, Dale Top, Quarry descent, Poachers.

Conditions: Scorchio, bit of a breeze higher up.

Notes:

Apparently it’s all kicking off in Russia, “beware the Belgians playing the joker”, but don’t panic it’s a dead rubber anyway and it might be better to lose!?

Whatever that is all about it certainly led to an elite Eric friendly crew, and post apocalypticly empty landscapes…perfect!

Yet another week of this dammed weather, what’s a chap to do but seek the shelter of the leafy trees…before heading high to enjoy on board refreshments, views, fresh air, and camaraderie.

Middlewood way (apart from the odd cockwomble) provided a cool and airy route to Lyme park, via the Higher Poynton car park and lane up and under the canal. We turn off at the Church just ahead of a club run of roadies.

More coolth once through the gate, and even the grass climb to a definitely slightly pink Paddock cottage, is easier than normal due to the phenomenon of grippy grass!

IMG_1135

Being legal in the park this time of year some discussion on route, and nostalgia takes us outside the wall to the big stile over the wall to the woods. Once through we do loops across dry beds of needles, roots and backed dry trail.

By the time we venture out into the direct sunlight again, the worst of the heat has gone, and its time to attack the climb to Bowstones.

IMG_1138

Views from the top are impressive, and a breeze is welcome. Shonky hinges on the gates don’t appear to benefit from the dry weather though.

No mounds of paper processing waste at the moment..although plenty of evidence of its scattering!

The “1975” stone provides a perfect viewpoint and platform for G&T’s with ice and lemon.

IMG_1184

3 Sheds is send a homing beacon, and we sit and enjoy our butties (or cold pizza slices!).

IMG_1161

When he arrives, he lays down a marker of his own in sophisticated outdoor living with proper glass, and pork pies!

IMG_1200

Saddleworth is still smoking gently hugging the valley’s  like mist, and as the sun lowers in the sky, its clearly drifting past Manchester. More worrying is a big plume on Winter Hill, which is going high in the sky before pluming away towards Wales.

Slim had brought camera with proper lens, and clicks away happily, the black cows among the sheep munch happily on the marsh grass, and a brown calf suspiciously licks 3 sheds bike before deciding it’s not worth eating!

IMG_1166

IMG_1179

Finally the sun sets, the money shot is taken, lightage is deployed, and we travel fast across the bone dry tops. At Dale Top a blood moon is rising from the East, more pics swiftly taken. Quarry descent is fast and fun!

Poachers arrival at 10:10, locking up the bikes it appears that the Nancies have a santa cruz policy going!

IMG_1240

The need for cold beer means that lager beats ale this week!

We miss the Dunc ribaldry catalyst, but eventually get there ourselves. Some banter with the Nancies who apparently call us the Tytherington Night Riders …how close they are! 😉

Pleasantly cool on the ride home.

TNR 21-06-2018 Midsommar BBQ mit Troll

IMG_0984

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete, Dr S & Butty

Crew: Chef Troll, El Pres, PTD, Dr S, Slim, Stunt, Butty, Coley

BBQ: Croxy, Dunc

Route: BL, Old Road to Walker Barn, Charity, RHS singletrack to Narnia, lower Charity, extension, Standing stone, Shulingsloe slabs, Pigford moor, Back of the Moon, Ferriser BBQ Spot.

Conditions: Blue skies, dusty dry trails, warm with a cool breeze, cold later

Notes:

It may have been a bit last minute, but our resident gastonomic bon viveur takes charge, and rustles up a forest BBQ in an impressive couple of hours before the ride.

Breathless from swiping through a gazillion whatsapps to work out what is happening, and what to bring, the crew assembles at BL (while Chef Troll does logistics).

IMG_4906

Coley shows matching sock/bike combo, Pete a crisp lower leg bandage (and tales of rocky offs in Andalucia) and there is a spate of slightly underinflated tyres.

Joe provides his traditional ceremonial motivational chat before the off.

We do eventually get going once PTD has fettled his tyre, with a neat route choice to deliver us where we need to be.

IMG_0928

No time for zig zags, but a fine evening for a long climb to the start of charity.

Early arrivers meet a couple of other bikers, one in full Hope kit, and Butty wishes them a good ride and “hope’s” they don’t get a puncture.

Views are hazy but lovely. Some live location updating shows a Troll de vouz is most likely near Narnia, a phone call soon after finds he is assisting some other riders with a tubeless “puncture”, we depatch Butty to help.

Singletrack is ace, dusty dry and fast!

IMG_0910

Reassembling at Narnia gate, we see riders just up a bit on charity…it appears our earlier friend is a bit “Hope-less” and doesn’t even know how to take his back wheel out! we even donate him an inner tube.

Lower charity seems to have had the rocky steps on the outside of the lower bend broken out, makes it fast & loose…a bit like the extension!

Passing standing stone we collect provisions, admire the impressive log stacks and machinery, then stash stuff at Ferriser, before heading up for the last loop.

IMG_4901

Some pushing over gratuitous branches & forestry detritus totally covering the trail is required to get to the Shutlingsloe gate, Butty going up a hike a bike steep path instead.

Perfect conditions to clean the slabs climb with dry grippy short grass 🙂

IMG_0932

Fast across the moor, where we pick up Butty again (draw on time, but one way we got to ride!)

Amazing light means stopping just to admire our surroundings, more smiles downhills.

IMG_0922

The BBQ spot has become more atmospheric with the addition of uprooted trees, plus lots of dry firewood too.

Croxy is already on site, has rebuilt the fire circle, and mostly laid the fire, three sheets of kitchen roll and a match are all that is needed to get us underway..which is just as well, as out of the wind the midgies are out in full force!

IMG_4899

El Pres saves the day with spray, and Chef Troll goes into full overcatering mode, where to put the olives , charcuterie and dips he wonders! Of course there is the mandatory items he has left back in the car, and we charitably wait for him to return before we attack the nibbles.

IMG_0944

Early beer bottle crisis solved by the downtube bottle opener on Butty’s Liteville (he’s been waiting years for this opportunity 🙂 )

IMG_0988

Once we have decent embers, racks are placed supported by stones, Sous Chef Stunt (with the all important full finger gloves) assists where unprotected hands cannot, and then together with Chef Troll provide a cheese burger (choice of blue or smoky) and kebab service (with salad and garlic sauce). There are also hot dogs and some steak from Butty and Croxy so no one is going hungry!

IMG_1008

Dunc arrives with birthday Highland Park, and the banter and beers run into the wee hours.

Croxy has a puncture on the way home….Troll bivvies again.

Top evening

TNR 14-6-2018 Taking it Kneezy

Crew: 3 Sheds, Stunt

Route: RB, Endon House, Lidgetts lane, back of Kerridge, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road, Layby climb to Dale top, Quarry descent, Poachers

Conditions: Dusty Dry, warm & a bit buggy

Notes:

Who needs sweet spanish singletrack when the dusty dry trails of cheshire beckon?

The TNR tradition is upheld by  Stunt and the very welcome return of 3 Sheds astride his bike to test out the still recovering knee.

Disaster is almost upon us before the start, on the middlewood way bend at the start of the footy pitches behind Rugby Drive a careering gravel biker narrowly avoids us!

Early grimaces and a pedestrian pace is needed to ensure that no undue risks are taken, but the Endon House climb give encouraging signs that an early bath is unlikely.

Back of Kerridge is a bumpy ride in superdry conditions making it all the more pleasurable.

Arriving into Ingersley Vale the knee is up for a crack at a bigger climb, whipping up the snicket (inhaling the odd insect!) and heading across to Pott Shrigley.

A lot of catching up to be had and good conversation when riding as a pair 🙂

Some sleek and fast roadies whoosh past us as we turn into Bakestonedale road, we are happy to spin a low gear, but it’s not too long before we are at the layby.

Never seen the moor so dry, lots of scorched brown grass where the soil is thinner, vegetation is high, but the path is not overgrown. A lot of ragged sheep rubbing the remnants of their winter coats off on whatever they can find – including the gate and bottom of the stile we need to cross.

Short dry grass = easier riding on the final climb to dale top. Views suffering from haze and overcast skies, but a great place to be!

Along the ridge then down the quarry descent, the brown grass emphasising just how many rocks there are…but giving great grip!! Down at the gate all too soon.

We have earned a pint, and re retire to the poachers, Peroni and Dortmund Pilsner feel the right reward for a warm night, and a knee that has eased into the ride.

Conversation continues to flow (lubricated by a second pint) before heading home (still almost light!)

Hopefully the leg was not too stiff the next morning!!

TNR 7th June 2018 – Into the depths of the Goyt

IMG_0711

Route : BL – Buxton New Road – Tearooms – Errwood zig zag descent – The Spanish Chapel – The Street – Ratboy’s trail – Butty’s new stuff – a slog back to the Street – Pym’s Chair – Jenkin Chapel – Dead Man’s Hill – Rainow – Home (or Pym’s chair – Bivvy site)

Crew : Butty, TJ, Trollster, Pete, El Pres and Bern

Conditions :
Marvellous, sunny and dusty dry. and bit cool on the tops late on.

17C at Tythy at midnight !

IMG_0701

Notes:

It’s Friday morning. I am tired. Legs ache but in a good way. And I feel a sense of satisfaction. The weather over the past three weeks has been fantastic for riding. Yesterday was no exception .

Last night a Butty devised plan had come together. No Lyme Park, no Macc forest ….the furthest reaches of the Goyt were the scene of our adventures.

No pub either . What? No pub . Are you mad ? How can we have a TNR which does not end in a pub ?

IMG_0699

So, it started with the traditional BL rendezvous….

Butty and Troll were the logistics twins. Taking nosh and beer up to the designated drop point .

IMG_0705

El Pres , Bern the brave, TJ and my bad self took the long crawl up to the Cat. The air got cooler and there was a slight breeze. Predictably we had the joy of motorcycle chaps taking the road at an unnerving pace.

By the time we left the road and headed towards our rendezvous with the logistics crew we needed an extra layer.
We then bumped into a pair of riders who asked….which one is Chris? …before El Pres had any time to get spooked they fessed up that two chaps down towards Errwood had put them up to this wheeze.

IMG_0704

A great dry descent to the finger post where we meet Trollster and Mr B.

The descent down towards Errwood was classic, dry and quite technical. Poor Bernard emerged at the bottom with a dint in his shin. A hard tail is a challenge in these conditions. A hard tail with seized front suspension is a serious challenge !

We climb up past The Spanish Chapel , its no steep and warm in the shelter of the dip. Layers are shed.

We drop down the street a little bit and hop the fence. A fast , twisty woody and a bit mad trail down through the trees, Devised, I believe, by a chap who used to go by the name of “Ratboy”. I have a fine graze on my arm to remind me that I need to sharpen up my game.

IMG_0712

At the bottom we join a fire road and wind our way into new territory . Butty leads us through the trees and we come out at a viewpoint.

From here it got a bit silly. a long tramp along a ridge with faint track through the heather …and then a hack southward two get back to the road up to Pym’s chair .

IMG_0716

We find a secluded spot with a good view over the last of the sunset and the fading shape of wind gather rocks.

The feast is unpacked…..roast chicken, fresh baton bread, vine tomatoes, onion relish, pizza , german starters …..Mr Troll, Butty and others have done us proud. Aldi has been decimated .
And the craft beer selection is preceded by chilled G&Ts .
The light fades, the lights begin to twinkle .

IMG_0724

God is in his heaven …until it gets a wee bit chilly and those of us who must work the following day depart via Jenkin Chapel and Dead Man’s Hill . it was gone 11, so this was our equivalent of “last orders”

IMG_0730

Leaving TJ and the Trollster to find a bivvy spot for the night.

IMG_0732

An excellent and novel TNR formula .

TNR 31st May 2018 – The artistic side of the Edge

Incoming....

words and pics by Pete (a couple of “library shots” in here )

Crew : Butty, Croxy, El Presidente and Pete

Route : Riverside Park – Bollin Valley – Prezzas – Hare Hill – Finlow Hill La – Bradford La – Hocker La plus – Slade La – Windmill Wood track – Artists La (Offroad flavour) – Finlow Hill – Slade La – Higher Park Farm – Birtles lane- Prezzas & Legh Arms.

Conditions : Dry, warm, sunny . It threatened rain in the distance but never materialised.

IMG_0677

Notes:

Four riders is a good number, and the Artists Lane side of The Edge has some excellent trails. You just need to know where to look.

We dropped in early to the Legh Arms to secure a table , complaints from our illustrious Leader about the early “last food orders” of by 9pm.

Climbing Chelford Rd some of us were wildlife spotting, others admiring the scenery

Buzzard by the Bollin

Bradford lane descent was the best I have ever ever known it

IMG_0678

We tapped into Croxy and El presidente’s knowledge of secret tracks 😉 . Much fun was had.

Then up Slade Lane and along Finlow Hill La to get to the Windmill Wood tracks . Short but brilliant fun. Out by the Owl.

Finlow Hill La has some of the best views in Cheshire….

Sutton Common/Croker Hill

The off road track climb of Artists La is way better than winding up the tarmac.

Another trip to Slade Lane, down to a long forgotten but excellent track which passes Higher Park Farm and brings us out on Birtles Lane.

Chris’s beer legs kick in …and we don’t see him again until The Legh Arms .

A bit of a Peroni fest for me and the Butty . Ouch , £5 a pint. But the nosh is satisfying.

And a short ride down the Valley back home for some 🙂

TNR 24th May 2018 – The Light and the Dust

IMG_0648

words and photos by Pete

Crew : Bernard, PTD , El Presidente, Butty , Pete

Pub : Croxy and Dunc

Route : BL – Zig Zags – Charity and loads more in the forest – Sutton Hall

Statistics : 1 drone, 1 very dry Macc Forest, a lot of ups and downs

Conditions : Dry, Sunny, Dusty and Warm . Cool on Exit of SH.

Notes:

I do love it when Paul takes us on a guided tour of the forest …to bits we have not seen in a long while ….

IMG_0632

Here is my recollection of our route :

Part way along Charity then….

Cheeky stuff with what is now a really long track through the trees and bomb-holes to the Forest Chapel end of Narnia.

IMG_0636

After finishing off Charity (but not adding the extension) we made a welcome return to the Dentist Descent ..quite overgrown now,
the bridge has been nicked by the rangers (no doubt)
and the end was a sea of bluebells .

Road climb to Standing Stone.

Towards new campsite but not quite .

Turn left to discover new cheeky trails over the wall . Down to n@ture re5erve.

A drone is spotted in the sky overhead – are we being watched ?

Version 2

Climb the steep ascent to Nessit and then down via

IMG_0644

the “Kershaw descent”

We came out into a treeless bit and then worked our way down and out by the Leathers.
Here we bump into a young Fellbaum, taking the air and sipping ale. We stopped for a chat.

IMG_0661

Our final destination ..Sutton hall
Wh0re-garden and other stuff were quaffed, and Croxy and Dunc-the-herald-of-the-Ribaldry-Zone joined us to make merry and celebrate the evening.

IMG_0672

IMG_0671

An excellent TNR.

Our thanks to PTD for a fun circuit

TNR 17-5-2018 Going Big for Buttyversary

IMG_0605

Words by Alex, Photos by Butty and Pete

Crew: Butty, El Pres, Mr Inc, Slim, Stunt

Vinehop: TJ, Dunc, Bern

Route: BL, Tearooms, Stakeside, road climb to Pyms Chair, Wingather rocks, Taxal Edge, Road from Kettleshulme, Bakestonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Back lanes to Poynton, Vinehop, chez Butty.

Conditions: Perfect

Notes:

Butty has a crafty plan to celebrate his 9th anniverary of TNRing.

A big ride to finally “do” Taxal, end up at the craft beer bar Vinehop, then onto his for Chilli…and for once the TNR’s get to ride back from Poynton to Macc!

A good plan it is, Mr Inc arranges sleepover rights and starts at Butty o’clock (5:50 from Poynton)

Train home talk is trashed on the whatsapp chat just in case anyone was thinking of not riding back!!

Cometh the hour, cometh the faff….Stunt has finally sorted his tubeless woes, but discovers that uppy downy posts are no good when they won’t stay down and won’t stay up!

Rendevous arranged at Bull Hill lane/Buxton Road junction which suit Poynton end riders and Macc Riders.

WhatsApp Image 2018-05-18 at 08.52.31

Stunt arrives only seconds behind, having gone for plan B..the backup hardtail!

Motorbikes are at a minimum (perhaps avoiding the recently surface dressed road), rooks are at a noisy maximum in the wind stunted trees just before the Lamaload turn, little lambs show that the hill sheep are a month behind their plain cousins!

No paragliding off shining tor, maybe the wind (what there is of it) is in the wrong direction?

IMG_0596

Arm warmers donned at the tea rooms, and dusty dry trail in good light is a joy…an unusual hazard is the lowish sun which is coming sideways on the descent into the Goyt, solved by hunching a little lower than normal 🙂

Grippy dry grass, and loose fireroad surface mean its spanish riding style required! loose spaniel avoided by the car park at the bottom.

Butty promises that there are fine trails on the other side of Erwood reservoir..for another night, as we watch some paddlers canoeing back to the sailing club.

IMG_0601

No rest if we are to make Taxal, the sun is still shining behind the ridge on the long drag up to Pyms chair.

Pete and Chris are lucky enough to get a glimpse of an owl flying low to our left in the low evening light as we winch are way up the tarmac.

Across the moor is magic..but there are still the odd very boggy bit to catch you out!

Climbers on Wingather, great views, blue sky, sliver of moon (deathstar appears!)

Big storm damage in the plantation to the right of the woods climb to Taxa ridge.

More amazing views from Taxal, and not a bad ride either.

Rear blinkies winking tired legs set out for the road ride back through Kettleshulme (spotting aston martins as we go).

Revving engines behind us on the climb the other side has us smiling as the noise is not matched by the little aygo that struggles past eventually 🙂

IMG_0606

It feels wrong to pass by the gritstone trail, and miss out an “easy up” to a great “down”, but time is against us…and the beer is calling!

Getting chilly as we descend at speed, front lights on, and past Shrigley Hall and into the back lanes to Poynton.

We collect Dunky who has beaten us there by a few mins, and lock up outside the Vinehop.

IMG_0614

What a set of delights inside! Juniper infused pale ales, summer stouts, lager for Bern (there’s always one!). Mr Inc brings artisan snackage – is mocked, then applauded as we taste them!!

IMG_0616

We all agree that Earl Grey IPA is a step too far though 🙂

WhatsApp Image 2018-05-18 at 08.54.23

Hunger wins after 2 rounds, Stunt heads to the shelves to buy tins with the remaining kitty…and is true to his work in buying the shiny pretty cans! (luckily they taste good too)

Butty feeds us most excellent chilli, rice and tear/share bread, our tins are gently consumed, we muck about with spotify, and within a flash it’s past midnight!!

Team Tythy make a break for it, sucking in Team Macc too.

WhatsApp Image 2018-05-18 at 11.32.29

Dunc leads us out, but only Stunt manages to stay on his skinny wheel for any length of time.

The local fuzz show a kindly side checking Slim is ok when having a crafty whizz!

Team Poynton slip into a severe Axis of Evil into the wee hours….

Strangely there seem to be internet connectivity issues in the general area the following morning.

Amazing night, tired bodies the following day.

TNR 3-5-2018 Aimed for Taxal, Hit Pym Chair

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Bern, Mr Inc, Butty, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Old Road, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, Pym Chair, Jenkin Chapel, Ewrin lane, Poachers

Conditions: Mild, Dry, Little wind

Notes:

El Pres declares early birthday tipple, and hence route choice rights, he fancies Taxal edge.

Collective gulp from the assembled riders (and a sigh from Stunt on the 3″ tractor tyres…who adds a few more psi)

Nevertheless once PTD has arrived, we give it a go and set off up the road (to be promptly overtaken by a young lad on very green MTB)

The repairs from the other week are inspected…cat’s eye ironwork replaced by poorly filled holes, some bigger patches of tarmac, one hopes that this is to even up the base layer for proper resurfacing (but likely austerity = make do and mend instead).

Great views of the plain in the evening light, the odd motorbike, but not too many (they are saving themselves for the BH weekend).

Plenty of interest on the way up, gambolling lambs, rooks mobbing the buzzard, curlews calling, the odd roadie making the climb look easy, and shutlingsloe and the forest looking inviting.

Regroup at the tea rooms, and time for tubby tyres to finally be the right answer on the offroad climb.

Overtaken at the turn off to shining tor by youthful whippets on ultralight carbon hardtails, fast down and possible to climb all the way up to the top in light and dryness!

It’s not yet 8pm but its already clear that Taxal and back in time for food is mutually exclusive.

El Pres declares tipple at Wingather as the new target.

Off across the slabs (only took us 15 mins a few weeks back with a tail wind), however the inevitable occurs, with Bern trying to keep up with the full suss boys and takes out the rear tube on the last water bars. Spare tube is already pre holed! so he is lent a 27.5 3″ tube for his narrow 26″ tyre – amazingly it fits and not suprisingly it’s rock hard!

Time has cost us dear, El Pres treats us to Sloe Gin, mini pork pies, mini scotch eggs with a cheeky apple sauce filling (with a tendency to squirt!!) and cream cheese filled mini peppers.

It’s a fine feast..and washes away the regrets of not being able to go through the gate to the beckoning vision of singletrack to Wingather.

Instead it’s route one back to bolly, is it the gin, or maybe the grip of big tyres on dry tarmac, but Stunt is keeping Butty and PTD  honest on the descent.

Legs are hurting on the final climbs before more downhill velocity to the pub.

Poachers is holding a Gin tasting evening, the Nancies have a posh table reserved sign all of their own…..but fail to arrive…much cheeky talk of modifying the sign in humorous ways..remains talk.

Old dog wins the ale contest after both pale ales are abandoned after one pint. Nosh excellent as ususal.

Axis of evil forms to help El Pres towards the line, and we sucumb to both world beer board (Butty’s 11%er a bit sweet with undertones of aircraft dope!), and a whisky finish.

Mildy wobbly ride home into the start of Star Wars day.

TNR 26th April 2018 – Unchain my forest

IMG_0584

Words and Photos by Pete, Forest shots are “stock” from a fine Sunday ride in January this year

Route : BL – Zig Zags – saddlers way bottoms reservoir – leathers – PTD ascent route – nessit – downhill – diverse routes to Leathers – Sutton Hall

Conditions : The rain cleared to a lovely night. Quite muddy 6.6C at midnight

Crew : Bern, Troll, TJ, El Pres, PTD, Pete & Coley
Pub : Alex and Dunc

Scenes from another fine evening of TNR :

It’s become a routine thing. Langley Joe drops in at the BL rendezvous – he is our very own caped crusader.

Paul is back at the helm, and gives us a different take on the forest once more . Even after all these years he still finds a novel way of riding on some familiar bits. some challenging climbs (i.e. the odd bit of pushing by yours truly)

IMG_0008

We are bemused that UU can sort out the clearance of dozens of fallen trees in the nature reserve bit but they struggle to clear about a dozen on the main forest public tracks. Its disappointing. many expletives come to mind.

Some of the fallen trees are an easy obstacle …but there is a mass of them between standing stone and Nessit which force us down into the huge felled open bit to get around them. Tough going to shift yourself and your bike through this lot. More expletives are yelled at the ineptness of UU.

IMG_0025

The lights of Macclesfield are visible through the trees as we ride the narrow gravel single track that leads to the downhill course.
There is enough light left in the sky to silhouette the trees of the forest beautifully , but it’s dark enough to need our lights to descend at speed.
There is something very special about this twilight zone. And the thought that you are headed for fine beer and nosh with an honest appetite.

We get to Sutton Hall. Hoegaarden and Whirly Bird are the weapons of choice.

IMG_0590

Between myself, Bern and Chris we have about 32 vouchers .
Upon presenting these to the wonderful “Sid” we learn that they are not all legitimate, some date from as far back as 2015 and some hail from the wrong B & P establishment. No matter. We are given the benefit of the doubt and our enduring faith in all things SH is renewed.

IMG_0591

Alex and Funky arrive about 10 post a reasonable forest circuit. Respect.
And the ribaldry zone is once more upon us.
By 9:45 I was thinking they might be no shows. O ye of little faith.

The main bill paid we have a brief AOE with drams all round. Chilly on the way home.

IMG_0038
