TNR 13-05-2021 Whisky galore

20210513-IMG_3159.jpg

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Multiple groups from: El Pres, Slim, Butty, 3 Sheds, Troll, Stunt, Dr S, Croxy, Doog, Lee, G, Dunc, TJ

Early riders route: RB, Endon House, Steps up to Kerridge ridge, Trig point, corner of Lidgetts lane, Bull Hill, Walker Barn, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit Hill, Bobs bench, Kings Head.

Conditions: Not that warm, but not that cold, overcast, mostly dry.

An earlier 5:30 start at rainbow bridge naturally split us into several groups.

El Pres on post ride logistics at the Kings Head “2 sided tents” with firepits special.

20210513-IMG_3129.jpg

The route there to include an RV with the Doog for a belated birthday dram.

Butty arrived on the E, and much speculation about whether it would get up the Kerridge steps ( 3 Sheds on non E did better!)

Good to do Kerridge “the wrong way”, and the descent to the former shonky gate of Cheshire worth it (although it almost did for El Pres’s watch!)

20210513-IMG_3141.jpg

Long slog up to the new road, and a very fancy old OS spot height marker has been hiding in plain sight on the Corner of Bull Hill lane at the top. More upwardsness to Charity, a failed RV with Lee, and time to appreciate the delicate bilberry flowers as we regroup.

Too much chatting by the downhill specialists leads to some close pass overtaking at speed down Chazza, but no incidents! Extension loose and rocky, and Stunt has a dab after hitting a large one!

The joys of the light mean you can see the trail far ahead, which is good for getting up speed for the S Bends 🙂

A quick pat of Dans bench, before route of your choice to Bobs bench.

20210513-IMG_3154.jpg

The Doog handing out very generous glasses of Bowmore, and wonderful stuff it was too!

G & Dunc arrived having managed to lose TJ just a couple of minutes before hand (he was found, and no French motorways involved this time!) Lee also found us too.

20210513-IMG_3166.jpg

Whisky bottle empty, time to head downhill for the Kings Head 8:30 cutoff!

The King’s Head was a revelation . Customer service on another level ! Food and beer arrive very quickly and we are constantly checked to see if we need more beer. Little marquees work well and plenty of warmth !

Will it be indoors next week??

20210507-IMG_3002.jpg

Weather : Not as damp as we feared, cold, Snowy at Chazza. Torrential on the way home.

Notes:

It seemed fitting that we should celebrate our esteemed leader’s 59th Birthday at our spiritual home in the forest …The Leathers.

Chris had done an excellent job with the logistics planning, but the weather wasn’t boding well.

It seems that after an exceedingly cool but very dry April (13mm rain only) we have had all the missing rain falling in the first week of May.

20210507-IMG_3001.jpg

Fortunately , in the end the ride was not excessively wet.

The crew size was only three at MC muster point, but we picked up Dunc at Windyways , and the E-Butty at Walker Barn.

By Charity it was gently snowing. Global Warming is my bet .

20210506-IMG_2983.jpg

Half way down to Forest Chapel , we ducked into Narnia. I had forgotten just how much  I like this section ..it just flows beautifully I was following Chris, and he took some good lines down the steps.

Onward down Hardingland and I have decided this way down through The Forest is the best .

We wind back up and make a little excursion to “Corner View” where El Presidente bestows upon us ready-mix G&T , and home made Rocky Rd. We are blessed.

20210506-IMG_2990.jpg

The Leathers was, as always, excellent but there was an excess of “Covid ventilation” to the marquee. Not their fault, just Cheshire East nonsense .

The food and service were excellent , but it was a little chilly.

20210506-IMG_2995.jpg

Fortunately  it was an excellent turn out …with a rare appearance by El Pud.

TNR 29-4-2021 Taxal Torture

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete, Butty, Bern and Dr S

Echelons from: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, Troll, Mark, Stunt, Bern, Dr S, G, Dunc.

At the firepit: Lee, Adrian

Route: Middlewood Bolly Viaduct, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to layby, ascent towards Bowstones, cheeky descent to Higher Lane, Priest lane/Kishfield lane into back of Kettleshulme, Flatts lane to Clayhole lane, and join with Side end Lane (under Windgather). Pyms chair, moor tracks and singletrack to Windgather, through the woods to Taxal, Taxal edge, Kettleshulme, Main road to Bakenstonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Bolly, the hosting firepit.

Conditions: Clear, cool, really dry trails, heavy shower later!

IMG_2805

Notes:

A joint operations command of Butty and Slim, promises new routes to Taxal, and homemade lamb tagine and bolly beer to finish. Plan it and they will come!

IMG_2804

Much welcoming of prodigals, and admiration for the welding job on Marks “new” steed. Dr S get the award for shortest bike ever! (borrowed from his son while he decides on a new bike).

And Paul has a new piece of PPE !

IMG_2806

We are soon strung out as the route is mainly “up”. Climb on road is modified due to the amazingly dry conditions, and after some inevitable faffing, and Bern declaring that maintenance is pointless, the grassy climb to bowstones is the easiest it has ever been.

Decent to the road down rock strewn snickets is over far too soon, and more steep sections of lane as we “contour” into Kettleshulme and then climb out onto more steep little lanes.

20210429-IMG_6140Canon EOS M3

One section is too much for Bern’s chain, and his “fix it when it breaks” comes to pass. Luckily for him others were able to provide the required quick link! Cool when you stop, and the odd spot of rain in the air, and more climbing to come.

20210429-IMG_6142Canon EOS M3

Stunning sunset on weary legs as we ascent the final tarmac section from Windgather to Pym chair, and some debate about route and time to the end of the ride. The lure of the off road to come is too strong, so with lights on, and the odd flake of snow in the air we enjoy the trails.

WhatsApp Image 2021-04-30 at 19.42.42

The Windgather farmer is apparently not too keen on riders in the final field these days (and a quad bike was gently tracking us from below!) so we took the official route along the edge of the plantation (which was good!) and pushed up the final metres to the start of Taxal.

20210429-IMG_6147Canon EOS M3

Fab conditions meant all too soon we were at the end and contemplating the route back. Main road and Bakenstonedale road the consensus for fastest.
All this time riding meant that some of our professionals with early friday starts headed straight home.

IMG_2811

The remaining riders fell foul of a nasty heavy shower to arrive very wet.

Soon warmed by the fab food and drink from our hosts. The bolly mini barrels almost foxed us..how many TNR’s does it take to get beer out of one! (almost all of us!!) Stunt provided some Laphroaig for birthday drams, and it was great to get a sense of what life might return to not too soon.

Many a stiff leg the following morning!

Great work from Adrian and Lee in the great vaccination enterprise!

TNR 22-4-2021 Bespoke Bangers Bash in Banjo Borough

20210422-IMG_8491.jpg

Words by Pete, Photos by Pete, Lee & Bern, Hospitality by Ruth & Phil

Crew : Pete, Butty, Troll, Simon, PTD , Lee, Bernard, 3Sheds, El Presidente

Route :  Incredibles HQ to Cloud, Timbersbrook to Biddulph Valley Way, Climb to Mow Cop, Edge Road snicket, Congleton Edge Bway, Gillow Heath, Biddulph Grange & Hurst Road climb via Gutters Cottage (Harry Cabbage), Inc HQ.

This weeks trending hashtags

#IncHQ #BanjoTerritory #SouthernByTheGraceOfTroll #MulticolouredBeer #nothingbelow5.5% #BespokeSausage

Weather : Dry and sunny , quite chilly after sunset

Notes

After last week’s false start, Phil really got the logistics and attendance sorted – a few days of posting photos of “bespoke sausage work” (ooh err missus) sealed the deal for any doubters.

The vast majority assembled at Troll Towers (aka Incredibles HQ) and soon we were off on at quite a pace towards Cloudside .

Here we rendezvous-ed with Bern and Phil who had earned extra points by cycling from Macc on the towpath .

20210422-IMG_2523.jpg

A minor mechanical for El presidente ..he had run out of rear brake pads . And his chain looked like it had been dipped in treacle ! But …at least he was to finish the designated route .

His Trollness then gave us a quick tour around the local and relatively recently constructed Cloud MTB circuit – quite impressive and good fun .

We then ventured further south into Banjo territory along the Biddulph Valley way , managing to lose Butty along the way.

20210422-IMG_2527.jpg

A quick ascent of to Mow Cop and round the back – just as the sun was kissing the horizon good night. Beautiful light.

20210426-IMG_2753.jpg

After a little bit of the Congleton Edge Bridleway my Maxle (thru-axle) on my Orange 5 wound itself loose …and I decided a tarmac route direct back to Troll Towers was the best option for me . With the gallant Lee as my guide.

The disappointment of missing the last off road bit was tempered by a low level fly past from a Barn Owl for Lee and myself.

20210422-IMG_8481-Pano.jpg

Back at Inc HQ the fire pit was lit ..the multi-coloured swap-shop IPA was flowing …if you had to ask the % you were not man enough ….

The food was just stunning , and most lasted until near midnight . Respect to Lee and Bern  for riding back to Macc !

20210422-IMG_8483.jpg

A select band were quaffing fine drams and listening to Led Zep in the wee hours of the morning .

TNR 15-4-2021 Sponds Sunset

Covid Compliant Echelons: Slim, TJ, Lee, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Troll, Stunt, Croxy

Route: RB, Middlewood way, Grimshaw Lane, Jackson Lane, Redway Lane, “under Nancy”, back of Kerridge to Waulkmill wood, Poachers Snicket, Oakenbank, Jumper Lane, Blaze Hill, the Kettleshulme Road, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone trail, 1975 Stone, Sponds, Dale Top, Quarry Descent, Birchencliffe, Stypersons, Sugar Lane, Vale, Backgardens of Bollingtonia

Conditions: Clear and dry – cold later.

Notes:

A decent showing for another fine spring evening, although route planning leadership was in short supply!Good to see Croxy back, but only because his back was not up to golf!

Meeting at Rainbow bridge, we were passed by many familiar faces en route to the newly opened beer gardens! Our beer plan was Bring Your Own, with a later checkout of the Vale beer garden and a fall back of Slim’s firepit.

With the Troll running a little late we head back along the Middlewood to RV with him, then climb on road up to Redway, and do a little detour to the back of Kerridge before heading up the Poachers snicket, and up Oakenbank from that end.

A lot of debate about route, but in the end we head for Sponds via the “high roads” and having sorted out chip shop options for later on the way, crest Bakestondale road to a glorious low sun! The more speedy managed to make the 1975 stone for a sun setting over beer can pics!

View is stunning, but temperatures are falling fast, and with a bit of wind its all layers on!

With beer comes banter, and this weeks topic somehow ends up with the Bristol Stool Chart! The stuff being freshly spread last week is still mildly whiffy 7 days later, but the conditions are super dry, not sure if the crunching under wheel on the way to Dale top was a touch of frost, or crispy dried exrement!!

The hill sheep mostly yet to lamb. Singing gate mildy tuneful tonight. The Quarries descent has not yet got a new line where the Deer fenced plantation has encroached, but it won’t be long!

Fast downhill on dry grass! Just the one splash to face in Birchencliffe, and then choice of Left Hand Snicket or Right Hand Hazards in Stypersons to bottom out on Sugar Lane.

Early leavers peeled off back to the Middlewood, and those in search of on Tap ale carried on to the Vale and beyond.

next week Southern Banditry let by the Troll!

TNR 8-4-2021 Officially back

Covidly compliant echelons: El Pres, Slim, Bern Lee, Troll, ButtEE, Stunt

Route: RB, Clarke Lane, Beer Drop chez Slim, Snickets of Bollingtonia, Pott Shrigley, Bakenstonedale road, Gritstone Trail to Sponds, Dale Top, Beavers Creek, Pott Shrigley, Stypersons, Middlewood way, Slims firepit.

Conditions: Dry, cool, bitter wind up high.

Notes:

Big Bern declares TNR’s officially back (on a Thursday), route start at RB to assist the electrified Butty to meet us en route after an early 5:30 start.

Route choice decided by end point, and an early Ferriser assumption is abandoned in favour of a generous offer from Slim to test out his new fire pit post ride. This has the added advantage of being conveniently on route for dropping off the weighty post ride supplies early doors!

Views from his new place are impressive, and once he points out Dale top…the route is decided!

Lots of crow (rooks?) / Buzzard action as we climb up Bakestone dale road, and Pete gives us an ornithological lecture on Buzzard/Crow and Buzzard/Buzzard interactions!

Riding in the light does provide a lot more interest, and someone has gone to a lot of trouble to place big logs across the stream every 20m or so all the way from Pott Shrigley up to the moor! Flood management? habitat creation?

A few lambs lower down, but the ladies up high still holding on to this years new life (although presumably not for long)

Lee provides assistance to one Sheep with it’s head stuck in the wire fence – it looked so calm, at first we didn’t realise it was trapped!

The wind getting quite strong is fortunately giving us a nice assist uphill (NB Butty with his E-assist took the offroad route from the layby and beat us to the top..because you know, he could), but turning onto the Gritstone we start to head into it, and its zipping up time!

At Sponds we are in the teeth of it, and it is bracing!! We get great views in the clear air, although aroma wise we have an interesting complex mix of excrement from the huge area that has been muck spread (and indeed the tractor is still going in the distance). Not too much ammonia, and almost tobacco undertones, is there some coffee in the mix??

Down the grassy humps, the surface is slightly ridged from the tractor tyres giving a unique ride on a familiar feature.

Hard work into the wind, and a slow approach to Dale Top is Ewe friendly.

Suprisingly the singing gate is not on song, wind direction not right? We do see lots of Red deer just over the wall on Lyme moor, and then inspect the new deer proof fencing around a large plantation towards the quarry corner.

Some joshing of Butty who is getting error codes on the Eevil steed and having some power cutting out!

We choose to go over the fence at the Whales Molar and do Beaver Creek, – which is dry, fast and without any vegetation showing all its rocky glory!

Right turn at Pott Shigley, and more deer in the fields here before we head up to Stypersons. Various routes taken, and some crew take a while to find their way out (but no offs!)

A mechanical from Slim leads to another delay we we transit over the canal to the Middlewood, and the E-Bike needs three people to get it over the last gate!

Tis getting cold now, and eveyone votes for the firepit asap!

WNR 31/3/2021 New Beginnings!

words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crews: El Pres, Troll, 3 Sheds, Slim & Dr S, Butty, Stunt

Al Fresco encounters: G, Dunc

Route: Muller Corner, Zig Zag, Charity, Extension, Ferriser

Conditions: Glorious sunshine and warmth, cold wind later.

And so it came to pass that the lockdown endeth and gatherings of 6 outdoors (or more for organised sport) could once again commence…

El Pres returneth to lead the faithful, and celebrate riding and some alfresco dining..on a Wednesday to make the most of the weather.

Scorcio for March, at over 20 degrees at the start of the ride. A slow start with the team assembling eventually and lots of chat to catch up with.

Original route choice from El Pres was either wildy optimistic or a right good wind up, and a sociable pace suitable to the temperature, big backpacks and the varied fitness levels meant it was never going to happen!

A few walkers on the (pretty dry) Zig, and from the Zag a steady stream of dog walkers and others enjoying the sunshine in the evening. Although the views not the best due to a lot of haze.

Covid conspiracy theorists had left their mark on the Tarmac charity grit bins (not exactly mainstream advertising!)

We are overtaken up and down charity by bikers with no packs (cars parked at the bottom of the forest no doubt), and some on e-bikes (as is Butty!)

20210331-IMG_6078.jpg

We arrive at the Ferriser firepit as dusk falls, having picked up beers from the coolbags in Dr S’s motor at standing stone. A mix of logging to the East, and clearing of fallen trees at the circle itself, means it feels more exposed than ususal, but there is the benefit of lots of firewood!

20210331-IMG_6065.jpg

We soon have a blaze underway, and our butties being consumed, and careful selection of the Troll supplied beverages…as the craft artisanal brews are of single, double and triple fermentation topping out at 11%!!!!

It’s been a long time since the last campfire night, and under the watchful gaze of our friend Orion (soon to slip below the horizon for the summer) we put the world to rights, catch up with each other, and simply enjoy some time that feels “normal”.

20210331-IMG_6059.jpg

Some folk head off early with longer journeys home, to be replaced by some latecomers..G bearing Champers, and Dunc after his Duks ride earlier in the evening.

20210331-IMG_6054.jpg

Later with the beer all gone, we manage to tidy up, and head home smelling smoky, smelly and happy!

20210331-IMG_6075.jpg

A great opener to the season of light nights!

We muster at twilight at the RB . social media airwaves have already told us that PTD was on his forest round and ’tis murky up high.

Mr B arrives on the new toy – Vitus e-bike

We take the tow path to el Presidente land , then Zig but no zag…a Teggs Nose rear entry (ooh err)

SD off on the slippery descent after it had been going oh so well

Nessit climb with e-bike try outs proved our suspicions about Mr B now being a bar – steward

IMG_1738

We had our aperitif at the benches ….which we subsequently learn has been visited by two other TNR bike bubbles this same evening

IMG_1732 IMG_1740

We descend for our “main course” of Titterton’s Pork Pie and fine mustard (thanks TJ ) with the tawny owls in surround sound as we enjoy the nosh .

Route :  Bridge 11 Rendezvous, South on the towpath and the Middlewoood , Tythy Snickets , Bolly Valley , Prezzas, Alderley Edge “citizen side” , Bradford Lane, Hocker Lane, Hare Hill, Prezzas, Home

Conditions : 6.1c on way out, 4.4c on arrival home at 10:45, one little shower as we traversed Tythy territory

Notes

It was still light as I left Bolly and headed north – a thin orange band of light on the horizon to the West.

Spring is coming.

Entertained by Tawny Owls in stereo tawny soon after Bollingtonia as I headed for the muster point

It was a “make the route up evening” – Butty always has the good ideas

In Prezzas a brief stop at Coop to get Weiss beer and Pretzels (thanks Butty )

Duncan and Alex chance meeting Chelford Rd – they had just been where we were going – it felt like a premonition of more sociable TNRs soon to come.

Alex and Duncan - 11th March 2021 Chelford Rd

A little stop at the “Stone” for beer and pretzels and star watching …

Then to the quieter side and a descent of Bradford lane – wet and muddy – it is the “charity lane” equivalent for  AE

A peaceful return east via Hocker lane – nobody else about – just how we like it

Tawny owl fly past as we descend into Prezzas.

A fine evening in good company
