Pub: Mawds, G, El Pud

From TNR 09-12-2010 slippery when wet

Route: Buxton Road, Bottom o Oven, Forest Chapel, Dentists singletrack, LHS path, up Steps, Path & singletrack to bottom of forest, lower path along reservoir, Church House

Conditions: Drizzle & Fog over icy roads & thawing snow.

Stats:

Bum slidin icy offs:

   Pre Ride       G

   In ride           Butty

   Post ride    Slim & Stunt

Notes:

It’s a challenge to arrive at BL in one piece as rain on ice is slipperier than a Teflon toilet.

G arrives bruised and battered after discovering (yet again!) that the canal is the wrong answer, and then immediately becomes a DNS.

Grim route discussions finally evolve to a road climb to the cat, which rapidly becomes a depressing monotony of mist & rain. PTD takes charge at Crooked yard lane pit stop and after conversing with a van who had mistaken it for the teggs nose turn (yes really very foggy) we decide to try the forest singletrack. Dentists descent is excellently slithery, trees keep the  worst of the rain and fog at bay, deers are a leaping between Dan and Stunt, and more fun is had on the path down to the road.

From TNR 09-12-2010 slippery when wet

Black ice is forming so over to the LHS for more packed snow & occasional ice. Mostly rideable even if weight is required on the back (for traction) and the front (for steering) at the same time! Butty goes sliding at the reservoir spillway and its “interesting” from there to the Smithy, and a creep to the Church House in case of black ice. Black Sheep, hot food (eventually) and banter – TJ shows the latest in cyclescheme chic from Sinclair, and Butty recommends horsey gloves that grip better as they get wetter!? Slim actually manages to leave with Stunt avoiding the usual “extra half” of evilness, there are syncronised offs on the silk road underpass on the way home 😉

Ski Report

Inaugaral Night skiing expedition to the newly opened Forest Hills resort started with a nice blue run over the zig zags. A descending Orange rider said Teggs nose was impassable so we headed up the white snowy roads to Chazza to amuse ourselves on the big drifts. Slims new slim camera is frozen up (thank goodness for mobile phone cameras !). A tot from G’s hipflask may have influenced the off piste route choice, some riding was possible over the fields, but lots of drifts, walls & fences to traverse in all manner of styles ;-). G got maximum points for quantity of sideways bike snow angels and a highly impressive front somersault off. We eventually reached Narnia and had a second dram before skicyicling down, Dunc almost becomes a tree hugger! Fire road a foot deep in snow – peddling through virgin powder worked well –  comedy lack of control on anything else! Amazingly we all stay dry and no frozen mechs  (too cold for any melt/refreeze issues!) Apres Ski with hot mulled wine & pie specials at the Church house. Bikes get extra layer of frost while we are in the pub as temperature continues to plummet. Time to build snowbikes and campaign for cablecars!

Race control again from Erics garage, complete with hot sausage rolls, hot glugg (Thanks Carol!) & map board making facilities.

Another fiendish set of controls to temp and confuse attempts at a route strategy 🙂

We discover the bunny is now earless, a lack of mudguards can threaten your paperwork, bikeshops don’t always give you back a bike in full working order, GPS is no help, line of sight with your buddy is no guarantee they know where you are, 2 and a bit hours flies by very fast .. and eight riders looking for a dead tree in a forest with 2 minutes to go is a mugs game 😉

Team Pud finally get their hands on the Bunny Ear tropy with a masterful performance

Team Smith push hard but are thwarted by a puncture

Very tight for third with Billy & Dunc pipping Slim & Luc

Stats:

2 Punctures El Pud

2 Offs (Slim & Stunt)

1 Chain faff (G)

From TNR 11-11- 2010 Blown off the Edge

Notes:

Staying low and in the lee of galeforce westerly winds took the worst out of the weather.

Very wet conditions in the bollin valley

Plenty of bike stopping muddy bits, 2 wheel skids and interesting moments.

1 walker encountered on the edge.

From TNR 11-11- 2010 Blown off the Edge

What is El Pud doing with his rear tyre?? Second week of 2 flats in ten minutes!!

Luc takes us up an alternative to Swiss Hill

Even muddier than usual for the Legh Arms

Conditions: V Wet muddy & slippy.

Stats:

Punctures – El Pud x2, G x1, Slim x1.

From TNR 04-11-10 Stupid Idea (with added Gin)

Snapped Chain TJ

Notes:

Luc and Stunt rebuild Pete’s bike pre ride and manage to get to BL not too late.

Truly epic rain – but we manage to escape the worst by heading west.

Wooden bridges in the snicket are slipperier than a slippy thing in slippyville.

Is there a link between riding towpaths and rain/mud!? (Manc urban ride anyone)

TJ& Stunt dunk their bikes in the canal to wash off the worst.

In his haste to get to BL Pete forgets to bring the spanner to allow him to remove his hub wheel – not good when you have a slow puncture!

Puncture fest of thorns shows itself a short while later – G manages to break his first replacement inner tube.

El Pud lasts a couple of miles before more cut hedges take him out again.

I’m never doing that ****ing route again says he.

Our normal shelter on Croker has been removed – so G&T for Dan’s 30th cowering behind a wall through which the horizontal rain is seeping through.

TJ chain repairs requires a mass of Gincompetent people.

Hilariously muddy on the final descents to the Ryles arms.

Notes:
– Blowy as hell climbing to C&F and heading to the A54 across Danebower hollow.
– Chumby was rough and Pete had minor off
– Unplanned rendezvous with Crew A at Standing Stone, who were already 1 bottle of Sheridan’s up on Crew B 🙁
– Much debate and ribbing of 3 sheds about “alleged” tumble/dab/off
– duncan on bike this week
– Butty with beard a la Desperate Dan
– Bizarre account from Eric “I shot myself in the rear with an Air Rifle”
– Upstaged by Kersh ? “My granny tried to shoot my finger off”

3sheds re-appears after a long absence and talk of becoming a man of leisure returns.
A slightly slack mood to the evening after Bate Hall plan was abandoned. But good route non the less.

Stats:

El Pres brake pad faff (don’t buy superstar pads!)

From TNR 14-10-10 Twin Trigs

Notes:

Everyone ignored Dan’s suggestion of going “dim” with bar mounted retro lights – including Dan!

Team rendevozed at the tea rooms with Butty having risked rutting stags and getting lost over the tops in the cloud.

Dans lighting idea would actually have been the right answer as we switched down to medium/low settings on our head lamps to be able to see!

From TNR 14-10-10 Twin Trigs

Impromptu Energy bar tasting session at shining tor in the absence of cake – we like Zip vit 🙂

Poor vis makes descent off the Tor much more exciting!

Slabs to shutlingsloe not to everyones liking (ie anyone on a hard tail!)

Dan realises you do need a head torch when you leave your bike behind

Doh! no snifters at the top (poor planning)

Eye spy count this week – 1 fell runner, 1 weeny toad, 3 dog walkers

The new lady landlords of the Church house make us welcome and the kitchen wench rustles up 7 meals in the blink of an eye. Copper Dragon, Hobgoblin and even some Laphroaig later in a slide towards AoE. We are invited to help decide where a new bike rack might be sighted.
