Conditions: Dry & Clear, full moon, cold. Very muddy in places

Stats:

2 punctures for Butty

1 off for Eric

From TNR 17-02-11 in Search of Northern Lights

Notes:

Top route doing familiar places in an unusual combination.

Faith healing on Erics frame seems to be working (placebo effect!?)

No sign of the northern lights, but stunning moonlit scenery.

From TNR 17-02-11 in Search of Northern Lights

Nancy’s passed early on.

Kerridge ridge approached from the lower path and round the back of the trig point before going down the normal up!

Eric lands on a small tree stump amongst the mud – ouch!

Tis a long way up to charity from the rising sun.

..but lots and lots of downhill – some of it quite gnarly.

G delivers on the fizz (and whisky for non faffers)

V cold dropping into Sutton.

Top food, Cool Jazz, Nice Beer & Deep conversations

Hmmm Good

TNR 10-2-2011 Dan Returns

Crew: PTD, G,3 Sheds, Joe, Dan, Lee, Stunt, El Pud, Butty, Big Nic

Pub:    Chris Bull, Mawds, El Pres, Sam

Route: BL, full zig zags to windyways, Chazza & extension, Standing stone, back of the moon, shutlingsloe slabs, Nessit, DH singletrack, lower paths, Church house

Conditions: Mild & breezy with light rain on the way to the pub, slippery & wet.

Stats:

No Faffs but Big Nic has a couple of offs

Notes:

The return of Big Dan to celebrate his 30th! – he’s been missed!

Chazza rather hardcore – big rocks & unusual patches of mud.

Back of the Moon a bit boggy but worth it for the slab descent.

TNR first – Rum Hot Chocolate – with whipped cream and “Special” marshmallows 😉

A few other riders spotted in the forest – S bends like rush hour they mutter!

DH singletrack stupidly slippery

Trashy blond over the bar with black sheep quench the thirst – and tower burgers Hmmm

El Pres has the cheek to turn up after missing the ride for a haircut!!!?

Katie has provided birthday cake to tip us into negative calorie territory

Mawds provides the intellectual content – the origins of the days of the week (Sumerian and Greek logic given a hint of Viking mythology apparently) Methinks TNR’s have more connection with Thor’s day than Jupiter day

the Axis of evil talked up..but did it deliver to Dan’s satisfaction?

TNR 03-02-2011 Nothing Special

Conditions: Strong winds with rain later, soft under the trees.

Stats:

Dave suffers punctures from ill advised canal route to BL

Stunt has a chain behind the cassette faff

Eric finds his frame is failing (but carries on anyway)

Notes:

What happened to the Chinese Year of the Rabbit themed ride?? But then even an ordinary TNR is an excellent evening 🙂

Slack splinter cell may have something to do with the evil headwinds & butty’s hour of riding to get to BL.

No Andy Gray behaviour from El Pud ..puff 😉

‘king windy anywhere exposed.

PTD leads a tour of all the steepest climbs in the forest

Tha buys frames from big blokes…does Dan do refunds?..or was it delayed fatigue from last week 4 hour epic?!

Sensible arrival times at the pub = pies

Lloyd shows us that helmet hair is trendy (but only if you are under 30!)

Stunt does a Pete for a whisky chaser

Truly horrible post pub..unless you got a lift! 😉

Pub arrival at 10.50pm. A TNR record?

Hot Austins (that’s the drink) at the gate on Chumby as Aussie Steve takes the Kershaw mantle (Puncture but no tubes..or tyre levers!!)

Just enough ice for interest on the descent

Wildboarclough is mech freezing cold

Full stealth mode up shutlingsloe

Big smiles on the way down

Winter warmer all day breakfasts and puddings in the Church House!

Pub: Mawds, Doog

Route:

BL, zig zags, Teggs nose, Leathers Smithy, Charity, Standing Stone, Nessit new descent, St Dunstans

From TNR 13-01-2011 Pool Night

Conditions:

10C, drizzly, muddy, very wet down chazza

Stats:

More Chain faffery from Butty, Slim & Croxy

Offs from Stunt and at least one other

Notes:

Curry & Pool brings out plenty of TNR originals, and the return of regulars.

Double figure temperature = clothing dilemmas, nice not to feel cold though 🙂

Lots of uphill to burn off those seasonally consumed calories

Plenty of muddy slipperiness downhill for fun and excitement

Chazza now rideable with odd old snow patches, and plenty of water running down the middle.

New technical singletrack off the side of the DH course will be excellent in summer

Bernard runs the annual pool tournament – many a game twists and turns for crowd pleasing suspense with Croxy taking the crown. Honorable mentions for Langley Joe’s expertise, the Grumpsters misspent old age & Team Smiths pot luck…and we never quite got to the widescreen tv.

From TNR 06-01-2011 Chain Snappers Anonymous

Conditions:

Milder than of late – no wind – very muddy on Kerridge Ridge and Sponds ascent

From TNR 06-01-2011 Chain Snappers Anonymous

Stats:

1 in ride snifter (Courtesey of Kersh at Sponds, although welcome, it was of January temperance proportions)

3 faffs….1 for Butty’s Chain which was terminal , 2 for Eric’s (too short?) chain but he made the whole ride

1 off (Slim on the rock strewn descent off Sponds)

Notes :

Excellent turn out for first ride of 2011

The theme for the evening was Chain Faff.

Eric started this with a horrible “twist-up and jam” in the Ingersley vale. Miraculously he unjammed it and continued, but by the end of the Poachers snicket Butty had snapped his (heavy-duty) s-speed chain. With no spare links in Butty’s bag, Kersh lead the determined effort to use spare links from his rohloff chain. Alas, it was all in vain and 2 or three revolution of this frankenstein chain later it was all over and an early bath in the Poachers for Butty. A good spot to break down, eh Butty ?

On the last leg to Sponds via Shrigley Eric jammed up again.

A welcome return to the Poachers, but God was not in his heaven as they no longer serve Timothy Taylors Landlord Ale. An axis formation was a certainty with El Pud, El Pres & Slim in attendance. Two of the WNBs were dragged in by its power.

0 faffs

1 almost off (Slim on the “Doog” Comedy steps exit from the middlewood)

From tnr 23-12-2010 snow 'n' gritstone

Notes:

The best ride so far in the snowy conditions (sorry boys it even beat the dentists descents) as it was so rideable up and down hill.
Seasonal visit to Chapel under the guidance of Rev Butty.
Bizarre singing by Rev Butty of dodgy French “Charles Az-no-voice” tunes.
Eric friendly numbers allowed a seasonal dispensation to be granted…for cheeky mini-forest singletrack descent near the end of the gritsone trail bit.

The Vale was warm, welcoming and full of joyeux sights, beer and good nosh

New TJ lighting spotted on team smith machines

Hot Austins served to cold riders at BL whilst the tardy Slimline version is awaited!

Warming of cold fingers & toes not helped by more Slim faffing en route to Langley.

From TNR 16-12-2010 Xmas Ride and Meal

Off road & up hill finally gets us warmed up – so time to stop for PTD’s Dundee shots or Doogs Mulled wine. Slippery muddy single track looking a bit worn these days.

Further stop at top of Dentists descent for Barbarella, more hot wine and a Sloe Comfortable Screw before whooping down to the Church House for a Chrimbo feast, Butty manages another slide along the reservoir spillway path on the way!

From TNR 16-12-2010 Xmas Ride and Meal

Finally link up with Croxy who has traversed the Chazza drifts to Narnia on the way.

Warm fire, posh crackers, a feast of quizzes, a goodly flow of drinks and suddenly the witching hour is almost upon us.

A Happy Christmas to all our readers & riders 😉
