Route : Chez nous  – Gleave snicket descent  – Ingersley Vale –  Poachers Snicket  – Pott Shrigley – Moorside Lane – Dale top – Brickworks – Chapel descent – Stypersons – Chez nous

BBQ : Alex

Conditions : Fine and Mild

Notes

Build it & they will come . I had been meaning to sort out a BBQ at our gaff sometime in the summer and this week it all lined up.

The promise of beer & banter brought the distant ones and country members out of the woodwork .

And to top it all it was Butty’s birthday this week .

The gang of reprobates was duly assembled at Gleave Ave , and we had a TNR first of a naughty descent of the snicket to Chancery Lane . Fortunately without colliding with any pedestrians in the process .

Out to Pott Shrigley via Spuley Lane as Paul wanted to try the Stage 5 Enduro route once again

At Moorside lane we had the first E-bike vs Acoustic route diversions . The e-boys took the steeper line up by the Park Moor boundary wall , whilst the acoustic group (snigger) winched & pushed their way up to the Whales molar by taking the plantation track.

We reassembled at the top , where Butty and TJ rustled up some bourbon based Rusty Nails to celebrate the birthday. And Butty showed us his new toy – a fairly nifty DJI drone .

After our refreshments, and drone entertainment …Chris , Mr McD and myself took the standard descent down to the Bakestonedale wood lay-by. Paul lead the rest on “Stage 5” and we regrouped at Moorside Lane.

Time to begin to return to Upper Bollingtonia methinks – and Butty suggests we take the chapel route back . In glorious , clear evening light with great views Westwards .

Back at Gleave Ave there was an apres bash to end all apres . As  host I was a little too busy sorting out food & drinks to enjoy it fully at the time . The nibbles and guacamole went down well , then steaks and even a full-on cheese course with red wine.

20250815iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_2646

The drivers and the wise ones left early …but the AOE became self propelled . Indeed , I ended up having an extra guest staying over as he was too refreshed for his own good.

Route : Maze – Nancyside Lane – half Kerridge Bridleway (KB) – Rainow – Oakenbank – Spuley Lane – Pott Shrigley – Moorside Lane – Dale Top – Enduro Stage 5 – Brickworks – The Church Inn.

Conditions : Dry and pleasant , bit cool post pub for the 10 mins trip home

Notes

The past three weeks have seen the TNRs venturing further afield – away from our routine territories. All this makes our Thursday gatherings even more fun imho. Variety is the spice of life.

This week, however, I had a hankering for a local Bolly based circuit and a chance to sample a different pub at the end of the ride – The Church House Inn , Bollington . As opposed to the Church House in Langley which was a regular haunt for us a couple of decades ago.

This week’s episode begins at our now customary Bolly muster point – the Maze. Everyone is there for six apart from Paul , who appears about 5 or 10 minutes later. This is no big deal – we have more flexibility with pub arrival tonight. Paul arrives in good spirits and with a spirit-based payload .

I always like the fact that Paul is keen to devise a route , even though I see routes from Bolly as my specialty . Tonight we end up debating options on route at a couple of points, but this is democracy in action .

Ricky & Crew

Tonight is also a night for bumping into other MTB friends , acquaintances and celebrities .

Our first encounter occurs as we venture along the KB : Ricky & Crew , a friend of Mark McD and Mr Hartell who Chris and I know reasonably well. A little bit of a chat , it is that sort of evening , before we move on. Fortunately the KB has dried out quite a bit from its muddy state earlier this week.

Our celebrity encounter happened as we reached Pott Shrigley and turned up Bakestonedale. A white pick-up style 4×4 passes us, and Josh the Ratboy himself leans out of the window and shouts in his distinctive tone “Off to do some practice? Stage 3 and 4 are fine , But keep off of Stage 7 or the farmer will b****ck us” . Saturday is the Bolly Enduro and we are off up to Dale Top – where Stage 5 is situated.

Pushing On (Simon's photo)

Along Moorside lane and up the bridleway to the Whale’s Molar . For us mortal acoustic riders there was a little pushing involved . We hop the fence and examine Stage 5 . For the first two hundred meters it more or less tracks our normal route down to Bakestonedale Wood . At the split , Chris and I drop via the normal route and leave the e-gents & the Troll to do the full stage.

20250807iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_2515

Chris & I end up waiting a little while at the Brickworks for the “dangerous brothers” , but eventually they appear and its time for Paul to break out one of his magic potions. This one looks like orange juice, tastes of almonds and has quite a kick. I am glad I sampled it after the descent from Dale top .

Far from innocent (Simon's photo)

Our last MTB aquaintances encounter tonight happens as we sample Paul’s rocket fuel cocktail and hear his retirement  news . John B, Carl & Crew appear from nowhere – we haven’t seen them in a while as the Poachers is out of favour now. They are off to sample refreshments at “The Hub” on the descent into Bolly.

The Church house exceeds my expectations – I think we may have indeed struck gold.

The arrival of Mr W

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew : Butty, TJ , Smiffy, Troll, Lee , Pete

Route: Bridge Green – Chelford Rd – Findlow Hill – Bradford Lane – Hocker Lane – Radnor Mere/Ex-Ax Site – Slade Lane –  Findlow Hill  – Windmill Wood – Artists Lane – The Wizard – Alderley Rd – Mottram St Andrew – Hare Hill – Prestbury

Weather : Excellent – with just a slight dampness to the trails which made for 5 star conditions

Notes :

It was an excellent suggestion by Butty to finish a ride at Base Pizzeria in Prestbury , and the natural ride choice was messing about up on Alderley Edge .

The new muster point of choice for an AE ride has become Bridge Green. As everybody assembled bang on 6pm I suddenly realised we had reached the Tipping Point .  The number of E-bike riders equals the number of Acoustic riders .

Our circuit broadly comprised three descents :

20250724iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back dual camera 9mm f-2.8IMG_2372
  1. Bradford Lane : The classic gnarly lane descent to meet Hocker Lane and hairpin left. A dip into the woods which border Alderley Business Park and Radnor mere was mandatory . Even without our customary guide in this territory , Alex, we managed to not lose our way !  And a gentle winch up to Slade Lane and a return to Findlow Hill ..
  2. Windmill Wood : Not as muddy as we though it would be, it flowed beautifully and with only six in our crew we managed not to lose anybody ..and we found our way down to the Owl Carving own Artists’s Lane without incident. The E-boys , and Lee, had fun climbing the off road bits to the right hand side of Artist’s as we climbed back up to (what used to be) The Wizard.
  3. The Biggy to the North Side: We always seem to struggle to find the right path for this descent . Not tonight, Butty was our guide , and led us down the steep , tree covered and root strewn bits that get us down to Mottram Rd . The odd bit of “get off and push” but definitely a lot of fun.
20250724iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2377

Normally we might  have climbed back up via Swiss Hill – but not tonight. We took the much longer way back via Mottram St Andrew and Oak Lane to Hare Hill . Its a lot less steep , and relatively quiet .

Windmill Wood

Base Pizzeria was a good choice indeed. We got a little table outside with just enough room for the six off us. Posh Poretti Lager and Brooklyn IPA went down well , even if it was only served in 2/3rd pints . We are on the edge of the Champagne Triangle after all . Pizzas were tasty , if a little whacky : Mine was Peking duck !!. Not cheap, but the service and atmosphere were very good.

Next – another TNR first ! – we decamp to The Admiral Rodney (aka “The Rodders”) . Here we rub shoulders with the moneyed and the famous . I got a nod from an ex-Coronation St actor on the way in. We enjoy the old traditional pub vibe awhile , and then I discover the Neck Oil is £7.20 a pint here ! But the Dizzy Blonde is a more sensible price.

All in all an excellent, and novel, Thursday evening

Narnia fun #1

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew : Butty, Simon, TJ , Chris , Pete

Pub : Lee , Smiffy & Dunc

Route: Zag Bottom – Charity – Narnia cheeky tracks – return to Charity – Dentist descent – Standing Stone  – Dans Bench – Rezzas  – Sutton Hall

Weather : Humid but dry

Notes :

After two weeks of very different TNR routes we returned to a BAU format in the Forest.  With the bonus of Butty being our route-Meister for the technical stuff.

As I winched my way from Bollingtonia across to the rendezvous I was suddenly passed (on Calrofold Lane) by TJ on a rapid silver E-steed. A few seconds later Butty did the same . The Electric Poynton Posse. My thoughts quickly turned to the question “have we reached the tipping point?” . The point at which E-equipped crew exceed those on acoustic machines. As I got closer to or muster spot on back Eddisbury I felt it quite likely Simon would be on his new E-machine . That would have made it 3 E-bikes to 2 conventional MTBs (Chris & me).

But no. Not yet. Simon had brought his acoustic full bounce ( well, technically I think it’s his lads, James) . So the tipping point is still out there in our TNR future.

New toy for TJ

At the muster point there was much interest in the new shiny E-steed. With both Simon and El pres having a little go. And both bring stunned at how rapidly it climbed the zag !

Hopping da fence #1

Butty has many good qualities. But this week the one I really noticed was his ability to encourage those of us who are less bold on the techy downhills to push the envelope. To try that little bit harder.

Firstly we did some messing about in the woods between the apex of Charity Lane and Narnia. It was a tad muddier than I expected. But it flowed beautifully, and it felt (at least for me) that following Butty’s line let me do more than I might usually do.

Narnia fun #2

As we finally dropped down to the Narnia track itself Butty did a rear wheel skid which he nearly lost control of …much to the alarm of two random bikers heading along the track towards him.

At the bottom of charity it felt weird to turn right instead of left . But it was a good weird because we quickly hopped the fence. Butty was taking us to our second episode of techy stuff for tonight’s ride : The Dentist’s Descent .

Dentist's descent #1

TBH , its so long ago that I last did this track that the only bit which was familiar to me was the first 100 metres or so after you have hopped over the fence. Most of the trees have no been cleared (a few years ago ) and it feels totally different . For me this felt about 75% rideable (and I think TJ and Chris felt the same) . But it was fun , and the bits I tackled walking were because I knew I just couldn’t do them without a nasty off.

Back on the tarmac us acoustic boys had a bit of a steep winch back up to Standing Stone . There may have been a little pushing by yours truly. The Poynton Posse hit the loud button and climbed on the right hand side track .

From Standing Stone to Dan’s bench it was fire road for me .

And the flying ants were a nightmare – it was hard to travel at pace and not get them in your eyes or swallow some.

As we re-grouped at Dan’s bench Butty was helpfully brushing the little winged beggars off the late arrivals .

Our third tech episode tonight was my favourite – probably because I could ride the whole thing , feel a little challenged in the first section , but end up grinning all the way down to the Rezzies.

Alas United Utilities have barricaded up the track around the Ridgegate reservoir so that the exit at the Leathers Smithy end becomes a bit of a nightmare . So it was tarmac all the way down to the Suton Hall.

And we arrived just a little earlier than our booking . The service was good, the food quite passable and the beer ok …but the prices of the beer ! Thank goodness for £36 worth of vouchers from Butty & El Pres to take just a little bit of the edge off of the bill.

In the posh room at SH

Smiffy & Lee turned up just after we arrived …..and Dunc a bit later.

A fine evening !

And no A of E

Minn End Ascent #3

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew : Lee, Butty, Troll, Dunc , Smiffy Steve , Chris , Pete

Route : Lyme Green Business Park  – Towpath south – The (foot of ) Cloud – Minn End Lane – A54 – Hollin Lane – Sutton – Towpath North – The Bolly Tap

Pub  :  Bern (briefly) & Ruth

Weather : Hot and dry

Notes :

This was a Lee Wadsworth & Dunc Chandler production .

Lee devised the route (with a little bit of help from Phil for the bit near the foot of the cloud) , Dunc sorted out a table for us at the Bolly Tap .

Our rendezvous point was the entrance onto the canal towpath from the Lyme Green Business Park. I am 99% sure this is a TNR first as a gathering point to start the ride.  Just getting to this point down the towpath from Sutton was a minor mission ! Quite seriously overgrown , only just passable on a bike. This I think is a “not very much frequented” section of the canal towpath .

Smithy catches us up at Bosley Locks

I haven’t ridden this bit of the canal in years – but what a pleasure it is . We hardly meet a soul . The Bosley Locks (all twelve of them) are a joy . It was here that Smiffy Steve caught us up . On his acoustic 29er . Built from bits of ebay. The frame and forks were under £200 ! We are impressed .

The only fly in the ointment is that some lowlife had put drawing pins on the towpath itself somewhere near the Fool’s nook . Lee caught two in his front tyre ..and I got one in my back tyre – but I didn’t find out until several days later. Another victory for tubeless tyres .

Just after the Fool’s Nook , on the opposite side of the canal to the towpath someone has constructed their own bit of a Northshore type thing ! Its quite big ! Sorry I don’t have any photos to pop in.

Our towpath journey comes to an end at Bridge 61 – which is where it goes under the A54 . We hairpin back down a minor lane , and two minutes later Butty finally appears !

At this point we finally have to do a bit of climbing . It had been really pleasant spinning along the towpath and dropping down the locks  as it gave a little relief from the merciless heat of the day .

At the foot of the cloud we meet up with the Troll (who has cycled directly from his gaff ) , and he guides us around the side of the Cloud and down some beaten up track which eventually crosses a bridge in a mass of mud.

In no time at all we are joining the Leek – Macc main road and heading North , crossing the Hug Bridge and hanging a right onto Minn End Lane .

Bite that gate

It is a slow , long and gradual climb up but an excellent route (a gated tarmac minor road) with stonking views in all directions as you near the top .

Another Muller Corner ?

Along the way we discover that there is another Muller Corner in the Macc vicinity ! And Smithy & Lee disappear for a bit of the back end of the posse . Smithy has bust a spoke , but a bodged solution has been found.

Shutlingsloe from Minn End The Cloud from Minn End The Minn End Shuffle

Joining the A54 its a blissful cooling descent until a tiny climbing section when we reach Hollin Lane , and turn towards the Ryles Arms. More blissful descending in cooler air . We would have loved to sink a cold beer at the Ryles but the clock is ticking.

At Gurnett we hop back on the towpath which almost gets us all the way to our watering hole . Its just a couple of Macc backstreets until we reach the haven of the Bolly Tap.

A big shout out to Funky Dunc at this point.  Earlier this week he had whatApped a photo of a flyer for tonight’s event at The Bolly Tap. Bollington Brewing have partnered with another outfit who will provide food .

Dunc has booked us a table for 8:30pm . We arrive with 3 minutes to spare to discover ….all the food has been eaten ! Such was the success of the evening.

Lee & Smiffy quickly sort out plan B – a Noodle order from V10 , and manfully whizz off to get it . Leaving the rest of us to quench our mighty collective thirst.

Noodle frenzy at the Bolly Tap

The place is buzzing – really doing a good trade – with a clientele noticeably younger than us . The Eastern Nights flows way too easily , as does some brew called Fuzzy and Butty ends up drinking something which smells like ice cream !

Bern makes a surprise appearance (straight from playing football ) but wisely disappears before any Axis Of Evil materialises.

The A of E convened

The head barman here is our old mate Phil from days of yore at the Sutton Hall . I think this had some factor in us still getting served late on …and a post 11pm departure home .

As I stopped briefly (at the AZ Bridge) to say goodnight to Butty & Dunc a beautiful full moon was hanging low in the sky.

A fine, and memorable , evening indeed.

Words & pics by Pete

Crew : TJ, Butty, Troll, Croxy, Smiffy Steve , Chris , Pete, Bernard

Route (highlights only) : Bridge Green Prestbury  – Bradford Lane – Hocker Lane – Back of Chelford – Little Warford – Great Warford – Fulshaw Park – Styal Mill – “ The Ship Inn”  –  A555 Cycle path – Poynton Pool & Incline – TJ’s (Jacksonville)

@Jacksonville  : Adrian & Biscuit

Weather : Dry and pleasant , we did find a tiny bit of mud. Glad of an extra layer later on as we sat around the fire pit.

Notes :

This week it was a “made in Poynton” production . Butty devised the route and TJ (and Enid ) hosted us afterwards at  Jacksonville , Higher Poynton .

The route itself was based upon a section of a designated (and signposted) route known as Laureen’s Ride . I think its a horse/bike/walkers thing. We had a familiar route towards Alderley Edge (and beyond) to meet up with the LR bit at the back of Chelford . This brought back memories of my cycle commutes to and from Barclays . Quiet lanes and off road bits where I could . After Styal we left the LR section and Butty had devised an excellent route using lots of A555 cycle path , a path along Poynton Pool (dodging dog walkers and fishermen) and the excellent off road Poynton Incline (one of several) which climbs gradually to higher the upper reaches of Poynton.

A nice mixture of machinery on show by the crew . Smiffy on his bling titanium cross bike with carbon forks. Croxy arrived on his E-gravel beast which you would struggle to identify as being e-equipped ! A very subtle design. I chose my trusty 26inch Cotic Soul hardtail – which is fairly nippy on the flat if the tyres are fully pumped up.

All managed the Bradford Lane descent without incident …even those with no suspension

Those on full sussers felt the benefit on the Hocker Lane cobbles.

At the back of Chelford we entered the champagne triangle land ….lots of gated mansions and f-off big motors .

Some really nice tracks across fields and through little wooded bits

A brief “heritage appreciation” stop at Styal Mill

A welcome visit to The Ship Inn ….we were definitely ready for a beer . We managed to lose Bernard and Smiffy as we approached The Ship …but they were soon relocated by Butty .

20250703iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2136

The route back from Styal seemed to be quite swift on the A555 cycleway  – I do remember we encountered some apprentice drug dealers on E-bikes too big for them and sporting black balaclavas even though it was still fairly warm. And as we went through an underpass bit there was a strong whiff of skunk.

The path a long Poynton Pool seemed to go on for ever , but it was much more pleasant than the main road . The Poynton incline feels like you are sneaking along the end of loads of peoples back gardens.

Its about 9:30pm when we get to TJs

Lots of barking from the Jacksonville Hounds to greet us . TJ’s Campervan held a treasure trove of chilled beers – and was also to be The Troll’s accommodation for the evening .

20250703iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2138

TJ & Enid (with Butty as the sous chef) treated us to a constant flow of Waitrose Pizza (pimped with extras I believe ) . Troll took charge of the MK2 fire pit . The Mk1 version had expired in another TNR refreshment session last year !

It was quite luxurious to be delivered a succession of tasty chunks of Pizza .

The wise ones departed early , and then a smaller cadre were treated to  some Aldi Malt.

Weather : Fairly tickety boo , getting a bit cool when we were eating our nosh on The Rec . Raining on the exit from the Vale

Notes

It’s the second time in a month that the word Kebab has been in a TNR report title ?. I am not sure whether this is a sign of success or failure .

It was a simple formula this week.

The objectives were :

Ride for a couple of hours

Have fun

Dine in an inexpensive manner

Retire to a local hostelry

Eight riders

20250626iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2035

We had a late start ( my fault, should have written 6pm start) , and spent a short while trying to predict where the Troll would appear .

Croxy turned up !

Lovely mini wild flower meadow next to Bolly Maze

Way ward riders missed the turn to north end farm

By Jumper lane I decided that Bakestonedale was a ridge too far , given our later start.

So at the junction with Blaze Hill we turned left, not right . And soon after Butty spotted a hare in field just off the road.

20250626iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 9mm f-2.8IMG_2036 2

The view from Jumper Lane is one of the best in Cheshire (imho) .

We all seemed to get split up on the Stypersons Woods descent – Chris & I took the very overgrown footpath down – this is the best route through Styperson’s imho .

At the Kebab shop Lee and TJ volunteered to nip off to the Coop and sort out some alfresco tins .

20250626iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2041

We ate at the benches on the rec , with tins of lager and IPA. Adrian had to be dialed in by Butty as he didn’t know our meeting location. Biscuit enjoyed legging it around the rec.

20250626iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back dual wide camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_2048

The Vale had vibe ! In the corner were the runners group (from the Poachers TNR era) happily quaffing, and pleased to see us. From my conversation with them , it appears that The Poachers has fallen from favour as the Bolly pub of choice.

At the Vale we got a good table and good service . Eastern Nights (aka Bolly Smack) and Electric Boogaloo seemed to be the most popular tipples .

TNR 12-06-2025 Chazza Chumby Classic

20250612iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1871

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: Butty, Dr S, Dunc, Lee, Slim, Smiffy, Stunt, TJ, Troll

Route: Backeddisbury Lane, Zag, Walker Barn, Charity, Extension, Bottom of the oven, Tea Room, Cat, Danebower Hollow, RH track to Cumberland waterfall, Cumberland Brook, Standing Stone, descent from RHS of car park, lower RHS wiggle, Ressies, Five clouds.

Conditions: Warm & breezy

Notes:

A warm and dry evening (once the afternoon showers had passed) is a no brainer for al fresco eating, so with Five Clouds the destination, a classic chazza/chumby route seemed the right answer.

Assembling at the bottom of the zag, a fierce wind was a blowing, causing a lone swallow to have to work very hard to find or catch any insects in the field. Mr Optimism (aka Lee) says the wind will drop, so we stick to plan A and head up to windyways – where almost immediately the wind is lesser – is backeddisbury in a gap between the hills and funnelling the wind from the south??

Good to have TJ back and hear tales of Norwegian mountains and Fjords.

Our usual e laggards have caught us up by now, we ascend tarmac charity to find the start of chazza proper a calm oasis from the wind – and here the swallows are making the most of sweaty riders attracting the flies – the are literally swooping and turning at head height – amazing to see them close up!

20250612iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1864

At the top of Charity there are sunny spots moving rapidly across the moors by the cat as the clouds scud past at speed.

Dunc is back on the blue Kona with the sci fi shock – with new back wheel and tyre…will it survive charity descent take two!?

regrouping at Forest chapel all is good, and still good at Bottom of the oven despite the gnarly extension!

IMG_1869

A hint of positive wind vector helps us up to the tea rooms, TJ helps out a fellow Royal enfield rider who misjudges the camber on the turn out onto the main road and can’t keep it upright. He is fine, but might need a new brake lever!

There is a lot of chat and sluggardlyness tonight, or maybe some are getting distracted by the broken down tractor and trailer at the Cat, being attended to by the John Deer support vehicle – strapline – we pride ourselves on our reliability!?

20250612iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1875

The cotton grass is bending in the breeze, skylarks and Curlews are still making their presence felt, and it’s time for the RHS descent into Cumberland Clough. Grassy and fast, Butty does the Extreme Stream route, the rest of us contour round, but somehow miss the rideable route down (I think we would have needed to cut left before the end) and mince down the grass.

Near the bottom it Dr S goes for it, but loses it on the little stream crossing and get a painful blow on the ankle, he needs a few moments but no serious damage done fortunately.

Everyone is under instructions not to come off down Cumberland Brook – and the stream is not much more than a wet slithery film on big rocks – but everyone gets down ok…but Dunc’s rear tyre curse strikes again! He has a flat early on which turn out to be a sidewall cut – wiggly worm applied 🙂

In Wildboarclough whilst appreciating the abundance of Pheasants in the fields (one of which is a massive cock) we get into the important business of ordering food – we’ve gone for the Kebab option, and Lee gamely takes our orders.

A final grind up to standing stone, then Butty leads us through the car park goes right then into the trees. ” don’t follow strange men into the woods kids” 😉 He is showing us a possible campfire spot – it turns out it’s visible both from the road and the forest chapel houses, so not a contender…but the trail down past it to the end of the “old pre logging RHS” is fantastic – straight singletrack with lots of rooty steps (just shame some of us didn’t have time to switch on our rear shocks!

A quick up and round the lower RHS, then down to the Ranger station — btw the upper ressie is very low, then down to the lower ressie past bob’s bench.

Now United Dimwittery have fenced off the dam end as they put in access for heavy equipment to get to the little Dam on the far side. It is possible to get over the normal fence to the spillway and along the dam – but it does require some multiple crossings. We manage it, as do two lady walkers who are glad to see how to do it! Signage suggests this is the status quo until “Spring 2026”.

Rider in a nice camper van comes to ask us about it and imparts info that Macc station is to be “closed for August” as they knock it down and rebuild it! Tis all going on.

Lee and Smiffy are despatched to the kebab shop, tables secured at five clouds, and the cloudwater is a dream after a long ride.

We hungrily attack the Kebabs when they arrive, but rapidly realise:

1: The sauce is very hot

2: Ordering chips was probably not needed

3: We are unlikely to finish them

Indeed we are soundly beaten by the Kebabs, maybe we needed to be 3 or 4 pints in to fully appreciate them, but they have been a good bit of variety.

The verdant IPA is also good, and the Pastry stout is a sweet pudding beer to savour. Last orders at 10 ish mean we are 3 pints good (note to selves – hip flasks needed next time), but probably that is for the best..

Nice to see Ruth who arrived to pick up Phil.

Still light in the sky as we rolled home, Solstice only just over a week away.

A classic TNR 🙂

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew : Bern, Pete, Dunc, Butty & Troll

The Wharf: Ginny & Mark McD, Lee & his guitar

Route : Zag Bottom – Charity & Extension – Standing Stone – The Jungle path – Dan’s Bench – Butty’s Off Piste Route – Rezzies – Leathers – tarmac to the Wharf via V10 Noodle Bar

Conditions : It had just about stopped raining by the time we gathered at The Zag, Wet and puddly descent of Chazza , Misty bits hanging over the forest , wet from the Leathers to The Wharf

Notes

I think our Bern’s quote is a good summary of this week’s ride and pub visit :

“ Slackers (ish) ride – wharf finish – noodles supper – Lee’s music! Well done to anyone who organised last night!!”

This episode of TNR began with a WhatsApp discussion  “ We need a pub that lets you bring food in” after last weeks disappointment with some of the menu choices at the Vale .

“The Wharf ? ” suggests Dunc . Quickly seconded by Bern …and then we learn that Lee is performing there tonight as it Open Mic night on Thursdays . It is a done deal.

We gather at Zag (minus Butty who has opted for Van Assist mode) and the rain has just about abated. It has been a fairly damp day so far.

At the top of Zag, as we pause …Mr B appears in his van and after a quick discussion on parking options he heads off to try the Teggs “Rear Entry” option. Ooh Err Missus.

On the Oakenbank tarmac climb Bern streaks off in pole position , while I opt for the steady winch up option . “I like to get the steep bits out of the way asap” is the explanation I get at the top.

Wildlife moment #1 at the Forest Corner gathering – Bern has spotted a hovering Kestrel . We get a good view and then it dives , grabs something vole sized and flies off with its prey quite visible in its talons.

It feels a little strange descending Chazza when its damp ! I have seen it much wetter but I was glad of my waterproof shorts choice.

At Forest Chapel I found the rest of the crew doing a spot of bird watching :

Wildlife moment #2 : Chaffinch at the top of a telegraph pole, and a Coal Tit on the guttering of the stone barn .

The damp day has resulted in a large pool of water taking up most of the Chapel’s car park .

The Chazza extension is still very loose and rough …and I confess that my dab part way down turned into a momentary “lie down” .

We take the cheeky Singletrack that leads from the Shutlingsloe forest exit to meet S-bends to Nessit part way up, which I think of as “the jungle path” as it’s quite overgrown but good fun.

After a brief stop at Dan’s bench, Butty leads us on a three part off piste descent to the rezzies.

But only after he performs the Dan’s Bench Jive to get him in the right frame of mind.

20250605iPhone 14 ProIMG_1754

The first part of the descent , I have to confess, I have never done before. It was an excellent balance between challenging and fun – without getting stupid.

It brought us out part way along a familiar downhill section, a hike back up and the start the next two bits. Both of which I had done before.

After the rezzies bit we find ourselves facing big United Utilities fences as they are working on the stuff after the dam. It’s raining quite steadily now .

A little bit of malarkey getting bikes over walls and we stop outside the leathers to don some protection from damp .

A wet descent to the V10 noodle bar , everyone buys their own . As I arrived Dunc is already tucking into his as the rest of us queue up to order.

Good nosh at a good price !

It was a timely arrival at the wharf – Lee had not yet started his set . Good beer , good sounds , plenty of space to eat our carry out. A winning formula  that will be repeated.

And lo and behold Ginny & Mark arrived to boost the Axis of Evil , which was in danger of being just Lee & my bad self.

I left the Wharf at 11:50 pm !

TNR 29-05-2025 Old Fashioned Ride

Crew: El Pres, Troll, Dunc, Butty, G, Slim, Stunt, Lee

Pub: Adrian & Biscuit, Ruth

Route: Bolly Maze, canal wiggle to Hurst Lane, Jackson Lane, Redway Lane, Nancyside lane, North Farm, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Oakenbank, Jumper Lane, Blaze Hill, the broken road to Bakestonedale road, Gritstone past Sponds, main track by the wall to Dale Top, whale’s tooth descent to the layby, Pott Shrigley, Vale.

Conditions: Warm, humid and windy

Notes:

No Jumbo ride this week, but an old school classic with a Bolly start and finish!

Short sleeves weather, but broody clouds and a lot of humidity – kept in check by a stiff breeze.

At the maze we are amazed that G arrives and on time! We relive the rock bashing trailside maintenance of last week to much amusement…although no surprise that Dunc is on his long and slack hardtail this week as the Kona wheel rebuild is still awaited.

Our salad dodging friend is in charge of the route, with pre-ordered food at the Vale setting our timeline.

As we pootle along the canal there are diggers in barges, and men in yellow drysuits in the water under the bridge putting in the blanking planks…looks like the viaduct section might be about to be partly drained? Dunc worries about the impact on the canoe racing over the next couple of weeks.

We have to detour around a slightly startled pony being walked up the top of grimshaw lane, who was clearly not expecting a gaggle of bikers to appear from Hurst lane.

G is manfully not using his motor in a display of E-masochism – and does crest Nancyside lane on meat power alone.

Lots of walkers about and the puppy training class is in Ingersley vale again (we must be getting to be a regular distraction for them to deal with).

The recent rain has led to a spurt of undergrowth – the brambles on Oakenbank starting to make their presence felt.

G manages Kiskhill lane with no motor (just) and declares his ‘ism is satisfied.

Climbing Blaze hill we are getting exposed to the wind, corvids are wheeling in the breeze and the meadow flowers rippling, yet all is good as it’s a warm wind, and it will be helping us climb 🙂

Top of blaze hill a black audi comes up the closed section, the white haired driver winds down his window and tells us that it “really is blocked a mile down there” quite why he was surprised and why he had ignored the signs we’re not sure, but he had the look of someone who has “opinions” 😉

Of course it is open to walkers and cyclists and we enjoy traffic free tarmac – with wind assist up to Bakestonedale road. The Bolshaws boys must be busy at the moment as only 12 trailers parked up, vs about 20 a few weeks ago.

More wind assist up the gristone past the 1975 stone, and Sponds (we decide to leave the ewes and lambs to it again in appreciation of the farmers daughter’s request the other week). New fencing along the ridge line – with the old posts and wire in a bonfire like pile sillouhetted on the skyline.

Nice new gate at the wall – but now getting the wind from the side all the way to Dale top.

The bomb hole (must be uttered in a peter sellers inspector cluseau accent!) is rimmed by the E C*#ts before checking out the wall the other side of the singing gate – which is sheltered enough for our Troll birthday treats.

Old fashioned cocktail with slices of orange, and homemade pork, apple and prune sausage roll with hand latticed pastry!! Spoiling us you are with your birthday feast 🙂

We are also treated to wonderful skylark melodies and great views.

Lee finally catches us up, and brings tales of Swedish gravel delights from his recent trip following the Kattegaten route from Malmo to Gothenburg.

The Nancies pass by, and we have confirmation that they are actively trying out alternatives to the Poachers.

Time for our own revisit of the Vale (last visited over 2 years ago!), passing the village cricket game on the rec on the way.

Bolly ales always a delight, most locks on the bike stack ever? Seven locks for 8 bikes!?

Gammon excellent, the beans and pie brigade less impressed. Lee continues tales of scandinavia, and the dangers of imbibing too much hotel coffee and saddle sitting – blocks the energy flow of your lower chakra IFKWIM 😉

The solution (according to the karma-lycra) is a daily energy release ritual using the buhha’s three fingered hand whilst performing the elephant trunk deep bow. News to most of us (but good to know), Dunc admits he has had the secret knowledge for many years!!

Adrian and Biscuit make a welcome appearance – and Biscuit gets the biggest dog treat ever from the bar staff!

Ruth arrives as we are ordering the pudding stout round, and the AoE do the reasonably priced Jura and Laphroig.

We wish the Troll well with his screed delivery in the morning.

No coats needed on the way home and a superb crescent moon to appreciate!
