Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Dr S, Slim, Smiffy, Stunt, TJ, Troll.

Guest Appearances en route: PTD, Ian

Route: Zag, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, road to Standing Stone, Picnic (squeaky bum) descent, lower RHS trails, Kings Head.

Conditions: Mild but very windy

Notes:

Storm force 6 with 40mph gusts is no weather for going high, so a forest based route seems a good plan this week.

The bottom of the zag seems to be at the apex of a natural funnel – the wind roaring so loudly that it’s quite difficult to hold a conversation! Once we are quorate we head uphill, at Windyways there is some shelter – and conversations can actually begin!…This week mostly the renovation work needed on Dr S’s new place in Kerridge 🙂

Charity tarmac is a real slog with a serious headwind, but once again shelter appears at the top.

20251030iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3619

Also appearing from Hacked way lane are PTD and Ian – both on E bikes, good to see the “Lad” after a long time. Plenty of e bike banter, they are on a cheeky ride with a bit of a time limit, so we let them go – only to catch them up again halfway up charity proper where they meet Butty coming up from his van parked near the Smithy.

Team E hop the fence to do the trails that cut the corner, whilst the rest of us complete Chazza to the Narnia turn.

20251030iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3620

A little muddy under the trees on Narnia, before we sweep down past the cottage and onto a dry and rocky Hardingland. Lower Teggs covered in a layer of autumn leaves before we pass between the higher and lower ressies and head down the steps and along to the road.

20251030iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3624

Time check – and wind check (its really picking up!), we opt to ride up the road all the way to Standing stone – mainly to keep out of the wind, but also to keep on time for the pub.

The road is closed to vehicles – seemingly because of the “new” pond half way along is overflowing across the road (or has this undermined the walls on either side?) – carpets of pine needles blanket our way as a result 🙂

Less fun is the final climb – there is a reason we avoid this route most of the year!!

8pm and all’s well for the final descent down the right hand side – narrow, fast and rooty there is a squeaky bum moment at some point for most, but it’s a cracking section – plenty of scope for zig zagging either side for those of a trailbuilding bent?

Right then left over the little bridge, up the slope and then down the sandy track back to the road, another old skool TNR favourite.

Route one to the pub and some well earned refreshment!

Inception, Sir Philip and Landlord mean we are spoilt for choice – and we have the big table by the fire too (not that it’s especially cold tonight)

Gammon was the winning choice, bean chilli was tasty but on slightly short portions, but all choices are consumed vigourously. Table service for beer an added bonus. Some hilarity from the staff as their full size skeleton decoration decides to lose it’s legs as one of the team brushes past!

Troll vents frustration at strange connectors on his electrical gubbins that he and Ruth are installing, and Butty keeps us amused with the list of kink features available with various AI girlfriends!!

Ruth arrives with tales of having watched too many glanding videos on youtube (wiring related honest!)

El Pres does pudding, then triggers an AoE on whisky, tonight we get to contrast Ardberg and Jura, and Stunt wins the Pete Whisky Description bingo with Izal Medicated 😉

It has actually warmed up since we arrived, but the rain is just beginning, did Pete and TJ regret not asking for a van assist home??

Pub : Adrian

Route : Messing about in the Goyt Valley following a van assist to Pym Chair Carpark

Conditions : Cold and windy , the rain cleared fairly quickly , fortunately.

Notes

A Mark Butty initiative . Van assist was pulled together to get The Butty Mobile with TJ & Me & our steeds to Pym Chair . Troll picked up Smiffy in the gas van of grime ?.

We arrive at the car park within a minute of the troll mobile . Hastily bikes are unpacked and multiple layers are donned because it’s chuffing cold and blowing a hoolie from the West .

20251027Screenshot 2025-10-27 at 14.36.24

Bizarrely Smiffy pulls his acoustic hardtail out of the van . Not what any of us were expecting. Is this a team morale boosting move for the Troll & me ( the acoustic Leffe twins) ? Nope , he just forgot to put his e-steed on charge early enough.

We head off downhill and eastward on the track which lies immediately to the left of The Street. Butty & Troll are quickly a distance ahead .

We have just about gained some shelter from that fierce westerly when we reach the hole in the fence which marks the entrance to the Ratboy created trail – a descent through Hoo Moor Woods into a lord of the rings type of scene , treacherous routes over treacherous roots . Big log ramps that have been cut with a chainsaw , its about half rideable for us mere mortals

20251023iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3516

We arrive unscathed, with a quiet sense of achievement. Now it is off piste tracks and fire  tracks through the giant woods.

With a load of mushrooms at our feet.

20251023DK10IMG_20251023_191701_196

The trees are giants here – much bigger than Macc forest.

( Here is a link to some good drone footage of this area which TJ & Butty created earlier this year : xx)

We arrive down on the Midshires Way fire road . Back in 1991 this fire road was one of my first bits of off road riding.

20251023DK10IMG_20251023_194500_741

Butty leads us lower down , closer to the Fernilee reservoir , on a seriously steep and loose incline . We then head back towards the Errwood dam ..and a big winch of a ride back to the vans.

Some spirited driving from Butty gets us to spoons Poynton in no time. Where the usual bargain prices have us staying far too late (apart from Phil who departed home at sensible o’clock).

20251023iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3517

Amazingly Smithy and me managed to find our way back home  without getting lost in the back lanes this time .

I believe back at Butterworth Manor a small axis of evil was convened.

Sponds Trig Point #1

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: Slim, Butty, Dr S, Lee ,Smiffy, TJ, Stunt

Route: Bolly Maze, wiggle over the canal, Hurst Lane, Bulls Head, Redway lane, under Nancy, North Farm, back of Kerridge and Waulkmill wood, Ingersley vale, poachers snicket, oakenbank, kiskhill/jumper lane, blaze hill, the broken road, bakestonedale road, gritstone, Sponds, Dale top, moorside lane, bakestonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Bolly Church House.

Conditions: Still, dry, cool later.

Notes:

With the President away, Pete gets in quick to declare a Bolly finish and a recce of the broken road – with news of impending repair work.

All the talk at the maze is of clothing choice – tis 11 degrees to start, suggesting it will be cool later, but there is little wind, so once again it’s all about layers!

Lee is back in the camp after his Italian escapades so we start swapping tales of Coniston and the Appenines.

We wind our way up through Bolly to Nancyside lane enjoying the last of the evening light, pretty firm on the back of Kerridge and down waulkmill wood, but lights needed from Ingersley vale on.

Smiffy & Butty at the bottom of Waulkmill Wood

Collecting Smiffy at the Poachers (he nearly got a cheeky half in!) it’s up Oakenbank to the hooting of Tawny Owls (at least three individuals) and the easy chatter of E*unts.

The closed road looks rather identical to last time we saw it, the plans include a pedestrian/cyclist temporary bridge during the 6 months + rebuild – but no sign of any activity yet.

Lee has promised us an Italian classic tipple, so at the 1975 stone we are treated to the syrupy sweetness of some Amalfi Limocello – with cups arranged ceremonially on the plaque at some of our favourite riding spots and landmarks.

Limoncello Lee

It goes down smoothly, and some folks help Lee with seconds to empty the bottle.

Fast on the grassy down and ups across to Dale Top, with a distinct absence of sheep, which feels a bit weird.

Lee gets to the singing gate (very silent tonight) only to realise he’s lost his specs somewhere between Sponds and Dale top – the little drop off by the line of stones the most likely culprit.

Sponds Trig Point

He and Dr S head back in search of the missing item, whilst the rest take a choice of quarry or whales tooth descent, meet up at the end of Moorside lane, and take route one back into Bolly and the Church house for the pre booked food.

We arrive ahead of the Nancies and get our first beers in – Landlord or Citra, Cruzcampo for the fizzy brigade.

Lee and Simon arrive in time for the food, no luck in locating the lost glasses, and blaming Limoncello 😉

Smiffy poses for a mug shot, we get the low down on Milan to Rome – which was quite eventful! TJ’s part Lejog, and folk’s other news – the Bull in Kerridge has new landlords…

Doppleganger

This week we are pretty well controlled on the pints front, but succomb to a cheeky Jura at the end (some controversy when the bill said Bells!!)

Dark riding is the new normal, but it was not cold tonight – Nancies agreeing with being overdressed in conversation at the bar.

TNR 9-10-2025 Dark & Mucky

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Croxy, Dunc, Smiffy, TJ, Stunt

Pub: Mark McD

Route: Zag, charity, extension, cat, danebower hollow, cumberland clough, standing stone, RHS squeaky bum descent, Macc Spoons.

Conditions: Mild, in cloud at the Cat & Danebower, wet trails.

Notes:

Sharp eyed Butty has spied a beer festival event at Wetherspoons this week – which allied to cheap prices and late serving of food – gets the collective thumbs up for the end point of the ride.

After last weeks token solo rides it’s time for proper BAU routes, so the classic chazzy/chumby is invoked.

After the amazing summer things are turning more normal, its grey and damp although not too cold. It is still light at our meet at the bottom of the Zag (with chats with Simondo from the ex Poachers 3rd group), but lights are soon needed as the gloomy skies kill off any twilight very quickly.

The cloud layer is just brushing the tops of the trees at the summit of charity, plenty of puddles in the ruts, and water running down the track – mud seemed particularly slippery (or are we just out of practice?)

Croxy is first down into Forest Chapel – and gets a bonus Barn Owl sighting.

Extension has some big rocks just where you don’t want them after the big drop off half way down!

Long drag up to the Cat – where it is windy and chilly in the cloud, we huddle in the porch donning extra layers, Butty has some zip issues with his jacket but finally gets it closed, and TJ brings out the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies (thanks Enid!!).

Danebower properly low vis most of the way, but we emerge from the cloud bank just before the end.

Chumby proper Gnarr – and seriously slippy on the edges – a night for riding the rocks, the brook wet but not as loose as it was in the summer. The ford a proper water splash now!

Big smiles and wet legs at the bottom, and just the final sting in the standing stone climb. Dunc opts to go the long way instead by heading on to the Bottom of the Oven and up past the end of Charity extension…is may be less steep – but he was over 7 minutes behind his top gear challenge marker.

Without pub time pressure it would be rude not to do the RHS descent – Butty has christened it the squeaky bum descent – and with a lot of vegetation obscuring the narrow trail, and wet roots underneath – it lives up to its name! Time to trust the bike and keep off the brakes!

Folks are ready for the Pub, just the minor matter of a chain faff from Croxy, and we are on our way down into town.

The outside tables are quite busy – but we manage to lock up in the little triangle of woodchippings by the entrance, and get a table inside next to a warm fire looking out at the bike stacks.

Bargain prices, and some decent guest ales with the Seven Brothers honeycomb and the Exmoor Dark going down well, nosh was acceptable too – shout out for the Sticky Korean chicken 🙂

We are also joined by Mark McD, and there is plenty to catch up on with tales of the lakes weekend, TJ’s LEJOG part 1, and Croxy’s safari adventures. Plenty of putting the world to rights, and before we know it tis midnight and on the pints of Leffe. SHOCK as El Pres can’t finish his Jaipur!! Somehow we have managed not to order double glenfiddichs at under £4 (maybe next time)

The dark nights and filthy trails season is officially started, and a could ‘spoons be a regular winter haunt??

Coniston Long Weekender 25-28th Sept 2025

Words by Alex, Routes by Eric, Photos by Pete

20250925iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 9mm f-2.8IMG_3138

Crew: Eric, El Pres, Slim, Butty, Troll, Dr S, Stunt, Mark McDermott

An Eric and Dr S production with accommodation at the Coniston Inn and four days of riding in big terrain.

Day 1 – Elterwater 22 Miles & 3,333 ft

Day 2 – Dunnerdale and Seathwaite 25 Miles & 3,700 ft

Day 3 – Grizedale

Day 4 -Greenodd to Newby Bridge 13 Miles & 1000 ft

Thursday is blue skies, sunshine and barely a breath of wind. With the exception of the Troll, we are all able to make a 13:30 depart from the Coniston Inn for a decent day 1 ride. With lovely grounds running down to the lake it’s a fine venue for picnic lunches ahead of the ride.

The Coniston Inn

We head north out of Coniston and off road over the little lump of Tarn Hows before dropping down crossing the main road and picking up the dead end road to Timberthwaite. Here on the climb framed by the fells either side just showing the first yellows of autumn we get stunning views of the Langdales and the big peaks of the lakes.

20250925iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3135

A chunky descent to little Langdale Tarn, where the bridleway takes us to the the longest & deepest ford in christendom, luckily there is also a bridge! Non of us pass the eye spy test set by Eric to find the unusually named building (a house called Eric). Pretty lanes, and a 21st century working dry stone waller are some of the delights as we climb up the side of Lingmore fell. Then into the woods for some swoopy descents, through the quarry, and a sharp turn right into Elterwater village. The latter is missed by Photo lagging Pete – but he manages to find us again at our mid ride stop on the village green.

A nice coffee shop where we buy the last cakes in the village to restore us. Turning back south Eric has planned some excellent riding on Holme Fell – with one totally gratuitous extra climb for a superb downhill (totally worth it)

Tired but happy arriving back to the Inn c6:30pm where Troll is delighted to see us.

Walk into the village for supper at the Black Bull – six years after we stayed here after our first day on the 2019 off road coast to coast. Coniston ale excellent, but what is this! they close at 10pm.

Stars on the walk home truly stunning, milky way clearly visible! another pint back at the hotel, then cheeky double Talisker (was this wise!?…well it was only £2 more to upgrade from the single)

20250926iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3166

Day 2 – Originally this was to be a Grizedale day to miss the crowds, but the weather for Sat looks dodgy, so we opt to make sure we get out on the big loop to Seathwaite under more clement conditions. Dr S brings out the E (nice when you have both!).

After a gentle leg stretch along the lakeside, we stop at Torver for coffee – there being nothing between here and our lunch stop en route. Prize for most unusual use for an old red telephone box – a rainwater butt for watering the pub’s hanging baskets (water looked pretty scuzzy)

20250926iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3151

A very long steep road climb then into forestry – mind the cock and balls shaped turds at the gate!

IMG_3152

Off road climb on the Dunnerdale fells to the col, with a quick detour to Brown Haw for stunning views of the Duddon estuary, with Barrow to the South and offshore windfarms on the horizon.

20250926iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3158

Cracking descent into Seathwaite and a cozy pub with amazing stripy slated floors. Those who hesitate reading the menus end up in a queue behind a big group of dirt bikers! Pete and Alex have a cheeky pint, the homemade fish finger sandwiches are amazing, and the tea warms through. El Pres has his trail snack of choice in Millionaire shortbread for pud.

20250926iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3156

The cloud is coming in – and not just in the skies – the shadow of Walna Scar road looms large. Fortunately we are only going part way up – but that is bad enough. E bikes ride most of it, but echoes of the coast to coast long push as acoustic bikes are no match for steep and chunky terrain here.

Sugary treats and time to catch your breath needed at the wall – where we now contour right on marshy ground before the pay off – a superb rocky trail on the side of the Ickle all the way down to the road.

Retracing our tracks through the forestry – with a quick pause to work out if Ebikes were ahead or behind, then out and down grassy off road to the valley floor. Frustratingly no access to the old railway line, but only a few humps and bumps to Torver and then traffic free trails into Coniston.

Another big day in the saddle, thank goodness for hot showers and comfy rooms.

Tonight we eat in the Inn, which bodes well as some rain arrives overnight. Post food we retire to one of the summerhouses for some excellent ginger cake from Mrs B, washed down with some team whisky!

20250926iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3171

We awake to news that Mark has to bail with a flare up of a foot problem. Troll heads off to collect his hire E bike, and we fuel up at breakfast for a day in Grizedale!

Before the off we need to celebrate Pete’s 62nd birthday – and give him some pressies from home.

2025100449141a3d-42ea-4468-b7fa-052beb1cebac

It’s a big climb from the off to get up to the head of the trails, and it’s fair to say that acoustic legs are feeling it having had two big days already. Skies are gloomy – but the rain is now only coming this afternoon, so we are at least dry (for now). Eric quickly hatches a route plan to give E boys plenty to enjoy whilst keeping mere mortals away from gratuitous climbs.

The new red trail section is underwhelming (as Eric had said) with swoopy berms there is easy air and Insta attraction rather than any great skill. But the bridleways are amazing! and Parkamoor good fun.

Emerging onto Parkamoor

We regroup back at the trail centre an team E bring glowing reports of the Lawson Park descent. More good nosh ..even the “horrible” soup was nice ;-), the chunkiest millionaire shortbread ever, and restorative coffee. There is even a glimmer of brightness in the sky.

20250927iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3180

Some things don’t change though, and Troll has back tyre issues having been enjoying his momentum downhill. We head back out on the main Red trail – the first section is a twisty rooty rocky singletrack heading gently up hill. A great test for acoustic and E alike – perhaps not on day three legs though. From here we take fire roads back to the Lawson Park turn, and head down – it just keeps on giving – and all smiles at the bottom. Some gentle minor roads back to base for an early bath and to watch the Womens Rugby world cup final!

20250927iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_3183

The red roses overpower the canadians in an entertaining match – albeit without sound (but we did manage to get the subtitles switched off!). With the inevitable weather front coming in, we opt to eat in again, which apart from a slap dash pasta for Butty (they did make it again – this time with all the advertised ingredients) does the job.

The highlight of the evening is an excursion to the summer houses for some birthday whisky and drambuie…however our first choice summer house is suffering from noxious odours – not from Butty’s rear – but from the septic tank vent. We retire up wind to another by the lake shore for fresher airs. Laphroig is too good a malt for making rust nails – so of course we do it anyway! Improptu field surgery on trolls splinter with pin and tweezers from a swiss army knife.

20250927iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3185

We ask Eric for a gentle ride tomorrow!

Misty Coniston Water on Sunday 28th

Day four and the sun is shining again, our routemeister has devised a nice flattish route with lots of coffee stops which starts and finishes half an hour down the road at the little village of Greenodd. Packed up and checked out we arrive in convoy and manage to find parking at the agricultural machinery shop which is conveniently closed on a sunday.

20250928iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3196

We head through the village (past some very interesting vintage rovers and landy’s) to get to the traffic free bridge over the water. Lots for the cameras here – bushes covered in dewy spiders webs that are catching the morning light, jellyfish on the estuary banks, and some of us riding the double track.

We follow a disused railway line then onto bridleway before dropping down to the river and the motor museum for some coffee . On the sunny decking overlooking the river we are entertained both by the wasps coming to join in Butty and Phils jam and cream scones, and the whitewater kayakers arriving for wetter fun!

20250928iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back dual wide camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_3201

A road climb back out of Backbarrow takes us up to the bridleway across low brow edge, and views of the steam railway – with obliging engine and carriages! Good distraction as Phil is struggling with that pesky back tyre again!

Damp and slippery trail to a damp and boggy moor – but a nice descent down and into Newby Bridge. The ailing wheel needs more air (close inspection reveals that the rim has a patina of dents and was probably on it’s last legs before Phil rented it!).

Minor roads make for good progress as we cross the river and head along the other side, opting to do lunch at the Steam railway station.

Plenty to enjoy here in the engine sheds, as well as some hearty homemade soups and sandwiches, before the train arrives for the full steam experience.

A nice flat couple of miles back to the cars in Greenodd before heading our separate ways – tired legs but an excellent long weekend!! Top marks to Eric and Dr S – this format works well (especially for E bikers)

TNR 02-10-2025 Tokenism

Soloists: Stunt, El Pres

With fatigue from four days of riding on the Coniston weekender, TJ on LEJOG and Lee riding in Italy, plus a wave of lurgy and impending rain…even the E assisted could not muster the energy for a ride!

For those who initially voted to ride a whatsapp game of chicken developed to see who would be the last to bail and leave at least one rider to fly the flag?

In the end Alex volunteered to do a Kerridge solo loop and allow eveyone else a “night off” . With the KTM out of action with a BB replacement needed, the tubby tyred rigid Marin was brought into action for a lap of Kerridge – up Endon House ascent, Lidgetts, back of Kerridge to North Farm, up “under Nancy”, back up Redway lane to the top of Endon House for a rare descent, then back past the farm to the Canal and Tythy.

El Pres also alleged a ride – with a pic of him at the bottom of the zag at 6pm – 20 minutes after he declared a bail! Croxy spotted him going past – but does an extended ride to get noodles really count??

Despite the weather coming in, both enjoyed mild and dry conditions and were home before the rain.

BAU next week, and time to catch up on all the big adventures!

TNR 25-09-2025 Date Night Bromance

Crew: Lee, Bern, Smiffy

Route: Cat. Cumberland Clough, Kings Head

Conditions: Mild and Dry

Notes: With the vanguard of the TNR on the Coniston long weekender, and TJ on his LEJOG (Part 1), the Berners-Lee combo fly the flag, ably assisted by Smiffy.

Cracking sunset and twilight views from on high before “date night” in the Kings Head 😉

TNR 18-09-2025 Swiss Hill Sting

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Lee, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Dunc & Big Nic

Route: The classic trio of Alderley edge decents – Bradford lane, Windmill wood and “the edge” itself, with a Swiss hill climb and contour along past Wizards well lane back to the main road for a Prestbury finish at Base pizza then the Rodney.

Conditions: Warm and breezy, trails still mainly firm & dry

Notes:

Some variety in the route mix this week with an unusually early visit to Alderley Edge, a prompt start from Bridge green gets us underway in the light – although it is a bit gloomy under the trees. Only Butty on E, feels like old times!

Bradford lane is dry and grippy – and especially to exit the bottom at speed onto cobbles which are not wet and greasy! There are puddles in the potholes in Hocker lane (which a couple of hounds are happily slurping) but the cheeky Alderley Park loop is also dry and firm.

The big question is “how muddy will the woods be?” – and the first snicket is encouraging – some soft patches but not actually muddy. So it turns out to be all the way through Windmill wood – there are pale rivers of sandy soil where the recent rains have washed the leaf litter away, but now all dried up.

There is a hazard in the corner of the sandy field though – a new deep drainage ditch is in place of the path – and there is wire at head height in lieu of the fence!

The RHS of Artists lane is also really nice for an off road climb.

Nearly dark as we enter the edge, a few stragglers walking out, only one wrong turn near the beacon but quickly resolved, and enough light to take in the view from the rocks.

Grippy despite the roots on the way down – but the vegetation takes out one helmet light on the way down, and a few brambles to deal with. Overall though we have made very good time, so much so that there aren’t really any excuses not to do Swiss hill…

This is actually damp across most of it’s width, but at least not slimy as it often can be. Much huffing and puffing and the odd crunch of gears, but all able to speak at the regroup by the old lamp post just inside the boundary of the edge.

The path has been properly restored to level and freshly graded – nice to have apart from the new steps in a couple of places. There is water in the wizards well, still a few walkers with head torches aiming for the beacon, and we somehow manage to exit via the car park instead of by the cottage where we came in!?

The outside table feel snug with the awning over us and the walls around us – 2/3 of a pint continental style tall glasses for the posh lager or IPA, fine pizzas and some good conversation before we decamp to the Rodders for proper pints and to watch the local wildlife!

Dunc brings Nic and we get into proper catch up and banter mode. Dizzy blonde is the economical choice, we are visited by a refreshed lady who seems to think bikers are an exciting novelty!? and there is an AoE…although with the mini beers at the Pizza place we are almost a pint down on what we might have been.

Talk of TJ’s upcoming Lands End to Macc, Lee’s Milan to Rome, and next weeks Coniston rides!

Not cold riding home in this last taste of summer (very nice after last weeks chill)

TNR 11-09-2025 Shining Tor and Lamaload

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, Dr S, Lee, G, Stunt

Route: Zag, Windyways, Tea rooms, Shining Tor, downy/uppy trail to Hoolihey lane, RHS of Lamaload, dam descent, road out to tower hill, Rainow, Oakenbank, poachers snicket, Church house.

Conditions: Cool, Showery, but dry trails

Notes:

Despite a somewhat mixed forecast a plan is touted to go high and enjoy firm trail conditions on the notoriously boggy route down from just past Shining Tor down towards Lamaload.

Obsessive weather app geekage suggested a need for waterproofs – but those who donned them from the off were regretting it at the bottom of the zag – with the showers skirting close but not delivering.

Extra points for Dr S with 2 waterproof layers!!

It is breezy though, and we are grateful for it being mostly an assist up to the tea rooms (good bit of buzzard action for those watching on the long straight drag section).

G also delivers on his promise to ride with a full turbo boost scorcher to catch us up (60% battery used), this then takes our group to an even 50/50 split of Ebikes to Acoustic…

At the tearooms we get a good view of the incoming weather – dark clouds backlit by the low sun are on their way and the windchill is significant. Buffs and layers needed now!

Despite the dry summer the moor on the other side of the wall has recovered well from the fire in the spring – mostly green after the recent rains.

The trail up to shining tor however is down to remnants of geotextile and devoid of the top layer in many places – going to need some serious attention soon. Encouragingly firm and lacking bogginess though.

Great sky with clouds, a bright orange stripe on the horizon, and shadows across the landscape, no drone shots tonight – tis too windy for dronie to fly 🙁

We head to the left hand turn through the wall – and Pete has called it right – dry firm and grippy (probably for the first time ever!) we make excellent time and manage the fast descent down to Hoolihey lane without lights just after sunset.

PTD has discovered some fine Glenfiddich in his Dads cupboard – which he estimates is now almost 30 years old – we toast relations and relationships, and savour it’s serious smoothness whilst overlooking Lamaload.

There is water in the reservoir – but as the late Paul Daniels would say “not a lot!” . Proper night riding now more fast fun down to the waterworks (no grumpy residents bothered to come out), then down the side of the little wood and out onto the road.

The only downside of todays route is this grind back out, but the twilight skies and little glimpses of the Manchester red lights are a nice distraction.

We do get to do Oakenbank – also dry and fast, and a rare descent of the Poachers snicket before arriving at the new home of Bolly biking the Church house.

Citra and Cruzcampo to start with, a lot of filo cheese pies are demolished, Lee talks likely Rome to Milan bike touring on Eurovelo 5 at the end of the month. Coniston trip chatter – bring spare brake pads? Mirth at the beer jug with the spitting image of Smiffy on it, and googling of the difference between porter and stouts (a slight difference in how far the barley has malted before brewing apparently)

The Cashlow curse strikes again – a lack of phone battery (despite warming it up in the pub) means G cannot pay his way again!! To much joshing he is bailed out by El Pres, we do like a TNR “constant”.

The sensible team depart after two pints, but a rare lack of an Axis of Evil, so we depart into the chilly night three pints good!

Autumn season and night riding has officially started!

TNR 21-08-2025 Summer Classic

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Croxy, Lee, Dunc, Smiffy, Bern, PTD, Stunt

Route: Zag, Windyways, Walker Barn, Tea rooms, Cat, Danebower hollow, A54, Cumberland Clough/Brook, Wildboarclough, Standing Stone, Back of the Moon, Shutlingsloe steps, singletrack by the bench, S bends, Nessit hill, normal tracks to the road, but no bob’s bench/ressies and straight to Kings Head.

Conditions: Warm, sunny and midgy

Notes:

After a summer of holding the fort on ride leaderships Pete throws down the gauntlet of organising tonights ride to the collective….and gets a classic route with a kings head finish set up by the president himself!

With a hard food deadline of 20:30 and a decent amount of ground to cover, a 17:45 start is required…and 9 out of 11 riders are there on time (ish).

By the time the peleton is at the tea rooms, we have been caught up by Stunt and PTD to be all present and correct.

No need for a route progress auditor (aka time nag) tonight..the presence of midges is a powerful motivator to keep moving!!

Danebower is dry loose and skittish, Chumby clough has nice dry rock free edges, but the brook section is a rockfest requiring complete concentration!! Gate duty = being attacked by midges, Bern heroically mans the lower gate before the ford.

Wildboarclough is full of young pheasants…hundreds of them, surely they have been bred for shooting and released recently as we have never seen this many before in all our years.

..or if could be that the logging on the North side has cleared them out of their woodland habitat??

The alpaca’s in the field by the turn up to standing stone were rocking the poodle look – presumably post shearing for their rather excellent wool.

Driven hard by the midges, and the fast trails we are at Standing stone with 50 minutes to use up…so a back of the moon mini loop is added. A push up for most (rideable on an ebike) we crest to glorious low sun, savour the most amazing conditions across the moor, then fly down the steps to the gate.

Speaking of flying, Butty has brought with him his hand sized dji mini drone which will give us some great footage of the evening.

We do the overgrown singletrack to the S bends (if we don’t use it, then it will get lost forever), no nipple whipping reported, but plenty of scratches!

Just time to take a few pics at Dan’s bench before hareing downhill (careful of the loose stuff Dunc!). We have to skip the bob’s bench side of the ressie due to the difficulty of getting through the works on the dam, and it’s a hard pedal down to the pub to be on time for food.

Wonderfully looked after by the team there, Inception and Landlord quench the thirst, and the food goes down well too.

Talk of a bivvy night soon, and TJ shows off a small fan/light device for blowing up your matress/tent.

After last weeks excesses, tis a night of moderation with even the axis of evil only being 3 pints and a whisky to the good.
