TNR 22-05-2025 Mucky Brothers of the Dinted Rim

TNR_Windgather2

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete, Dunc & Simon (the one above)

The Bretheren: Dinted Dunc, Bern, Butty, Dr S, Slim, Smiffy, Stunt

Route: Backeddisbury, Zag, Charity, Extension, Tea rooms, Stakeside old coachroad decent, Shooters Clough, Shrine ascent, Pyms Chair, across the moor to Wingather, Picnic, Taxal Edge, Kettleshulme, Bakestonedale road, Poachers.

Conditions: Dusty dry trails, sunny, chilly later.

Dunc takes leadership with an ambitious jumbo ride to take advantage of the amazing trail conditions. With instructions to bring your own butties and a jumper, we assemble at the bottom of the zag in sunny conditions and short sleeves.

Dr S brings out the E bike, and Butty has his range extender on. Dunc shows off a new cane creek rear shock which looks like a blinged up R2D2!

IMG_6522(Simon's Photo)

With the evening “a marathon not a sprint” the pace is sensible up to charity, where on our off road climb we are accompanied by an enthusiastic young black lab out with two guys. The one with the mullet has his arm in a sling…likely MTB injury?

The main lane is dusty and loose rock, the RHS is dry and fast, Dunc is testing out his new shock when he loses the rear tyre. Inspection shows a nasty vertical rim dint that has broken the bead seal.

IMG_6515

How do you pull out a dent that big at the trailside? Bernard to the rescue with adjustable spanner, and pliers…but it is still not enough! oh G you will kick yourself for not being here…the solution is hitting it with rocks off the wall!!

Wheel Rim Repair 1 of 3

Now the small matter of resealing the tyre, extra fluid from Pete (no sniggering!), valve core tool from Smiffy, CO2 cannister and the tyre is on – but leaking air at too big a rate from the dinted area. Time for the gooey wiggly worm tubeless repair kit from Smiffy (now rapidly becoming Inspector gadget) and his mini stanley knife. Gunk applied along the rim, more CO2 and behold – a fully inflated tyre! Top work team.

Wheel Rim Repair 2 of 3 Wheel Rim Repair3 of 3

The ride down the rest of charity and the sketchy extension (with new lines on the side to avoid the rockfest) are a good test – and all is good at Bottom’o’t’ Oven.

Time to warm back up on the climb up to the tea rooms (we were in the chilly shade during the de-dinting). A heron spotted in the field to the left by the stream, and a cuckoo heard calling!

20250522iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1491

Curlews and lapwings seen/heard above the tearooms, and a pair of e motor trailbikes come down off Shining Tor throwing dust up in their wake.

The old coach road down to the finger post is dry and flowy all the way down, perfection.

20250522iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1495

Shooters clough is also dry – even the really wet muddy bit only has a couple of token damp patches, and the stream at the bottom has dried out to a few puddles (Errwood reservoir also very low).

The Shrine climb is also in as good a condition as it can be, we emerge onto the Street by Patelvis’s van (the indian elvis) before heading up to Pym chair and taking the gate to the moor.

IMG_6516

More super smooth twisty loveliness all the way to Windgather, with a setting sun, a few climbers descending back to cars below, and time for a refuel.

20250522iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1499

Butty has some rather good Sangria, Dunc has brought sharing pork pie, Smiffy the mustard, sausages (including the Quorn…or was that Porn ones :-)) and charcuterie, Stunt offers empanadas! what a feast.

20250522iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_1503 IMG_6526 IMG_6525

The bring a jumper request was wise as the temperature is dropping fast, and we are catching a bit of breeze. The skies to the west are orange and purple, and the light is wonderful.

At 21:15 hours on the clock, Dunc wisely polls for route from here, Taxal is non negotiable (too right), but the priest lane climb out to the moorside and mudhurst lane drag up to Bowstones look like a loop too far. We (gratefully) decide its road all the way back to the poachers for a pint instead.

Taxal has a herd of cows at the start, but then is wonderful, the light is going so lights are optional, and it’s a third wonderful piece of trail on this jumbo night.

20250522iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_1505

Lights definitely needed for the ride back, instructions to regroup at the poachers.

Heading down Bakstonedale road we kept being flashed by the oncoming cars…nothing to do with our lights it turns out – sheep loose on the road, and not just a couple, a good couple of dozen down towards the brickworks estate.

Badger spotted crossing the road by Stunt and Dr S.

Poachers almost deserted – bereft of the Nancies, the other bikers, the harriers or the locals, just one group of guys who might have been travelling with work.

The blonde not bad for the lower alcohol brigade, the ruby mild a decent pint (although neither properly ruby or a mild!!) so we all dig deep for the pump of doom inception for pint number two.

Perhaps the decline of the pub might be summed up by the chalkboard above the bar trying to flog chilled italian red wine at £11 a large glass! ..perhaps to be quaffed in the beer garden where the furniture has been painted a trendy blue/grey colour!? We will send our local undercover reporter to dig into this story more…

In TNR news Dr S is moving to Kerridge! (no not the horsey 6.2 acres being advertised by White Nancy) but an end terrace near the Bull. Will need some fixing up before he can move in if all goes well with the transaction.

Ongoing debate on what to call non E bikes, it seems to have moved from acoustic to muscle to now meat bike!?..more evolution needed.

Bern gives us one ring (he was too tired for three 😉 was the lunchtime football to blame?) before we don extra layers for a chilly ride home.

Stats were impressive for the ride with it being an official Munro night of >3000 ft vertical climb, and Jumbo >20 miles (Butty had done 30 miles and 1300m climb from Poynton).

Smiffy gets home on 1% battery.

Dunc’s dilemma – keep riding the repaired rim/tyre or change the rim/tyre?

IMG_6530

Overnight leg cramp stats awaited 😉

Monsoon season approaches…

TNR 15-05-2025 Gritstone, Back of the Moon & ‘spoons!

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1374-Pano

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete & Smiffy

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Troll, Croxy, Dunc, Smiffy, Stunt

Route: Bottom of the Zag, Back Eddisbury, Cliff lane, fire road through the woods to the Gritstone proper, over the fields to Windyways, Walker Barn, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Back of the Moon, Shutlingsloe steps decent, singletrack to S bends, Nessit, White rabbit decent, Hanging gate, Meg Lane/Ridge Hill, Sutton, Byrons Lane, Gunco Lane, Heapy Street, Waterside, under the Silk road, over the cobbles by Storm Brewery, Park green and The Society Rooms (aka Wetherspoons)

Conditions: Sunny, dusty trails, cooling NE breeze

Notes:

A night for a longer ride, the the organising committee somehow managed to turn a “bring your own butties” idea into a finish at Macc ‘spoons!

A double start point, with bottom of the Zag or top of Cliff lane, and the late runners were pretty much on time, with a welcome appearance by Croxy.

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1347

Some winding through the plantation to meet up with the Gritstone trail, the picnic benches looking a little shonky now (or in one case an overgrown pile of rotting timbers). Dry conditions mean good grip, no animals in the fields we passed through – although a couple of hairy coo’s spotted one field over. Fine views on a beautiful evening, and all is well with the world (or not in the case of a couple of grumpy walkers!)

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1349

Charity is mediterranean – slippery dusty lines or big broken rocks, and plenty of evidence of off roaders having remodelled a number of sections by their passing! Smiffy has some contact with the side of the lane – and some nasty grazes as a result!

Extension also uber skitterish!!

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1359

From Standing Stone we push up to Back of the Moon then follow the trail to have a mini picnic – Croxy has brought Jura, cheese and charcuterie for an early 60th, Chris has negroni deferred from last week, and Smiffy has a selection of little whisky’s to raise a glass to dad Bill (Northwich darts legend!)

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1362

In the glow of mid ride refreshment, there is a re-assessment of the route plan, original is to head across pigford moor all the way down to Greenway bridge, then up to the Hanging gate to get a cheeky pint in before it’s 9pm closing time. However a majority favour descending the Shutlingsloe steps, and the forest to the road for the much easier climb up to the Hanging gate.

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1369

It’s a good plan – the moor from back of the moon is properly dry (once in a decade event!) the descent is proper fun, and there is mirth at the bottom when Smiffy “taps” his back wheel to get it through the gate – and sets off his crash alert!

2025051556ed2cc6-86a5-40d5-8f98-a63726094a51

The singletrack is not too overgrown (no nipple whip reported this time), and we approach the Nessit benches into a low golden sun.

Choice of descents – fast loose gravel on the white rabbit main drag, or the rooty downshills that come out in the same place.

20250515iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1384

Poor research in evidence as the Hanging Gate now only opens Fri/Sat/Sun, so we opt for route one to ‘spoons, where Pete has deposited a big chain for locking up.

Bikes on the terrace and a table inside looking over them, food and a pint for £11, a round of Jaipur’s from Croxy, and the glory and diversity of the spoons crowd to admire.

Axis of Evil is encouraged by double whisky for a fiver…and there are two rounds!

An unusual route and novel finish has worked well…will spoons be a regular stop???

TNR 08-05-2025 Goyt Brulee

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Butty, Dunc, Smiffy, Stunt

Route: Botton of the Zag, Walker Barn, Tea Rooms, Stakeside descent and along to Goytside Quarry, along the valley towards the Reservoir, up the track towards the carpark, right hand turn up the steep grass to the finger post for Shooters Clough, up the old coach road by the wall back to the tea rooms, Bottom of the oven, standing stone, sutton hall.

Conditions: Sunny & clear, slightly cool NE breeze.

Notes

The fine weather continues, perhaps a bit too cool for al fresco eating, but a good night to head up high and inspect the Goyt fire damage.

Smaller crew this week, with disturbingly high E content! The usual catch us up antics, which enables the E brigade to do fun things light Charity or Pym Chair to Shining tor to RV at the tea rooms.

Muscle bike (the new name for acoustic) equipped Dunc brought up the rear, but then heroically didn’t stop before heading up to the top track.

As soon as we could see over the wall to our right , the extent of the blaze was clear – it came right up to the wall!

The Stakeside path of rock and sand twisted like a pale snake through blackness on both sides, feeling like you were riding on an alien world (that smelled of bonfire).

The firefighters had done an amazing job to stop it getting into the trees (mostly) lower down, and from the Derbyshire bridge road you couldn’t see it.

Fun police have put huge boulders along the road by the old quarry to block off parking!??

An unintended split in the group had El Pres and Stunt waiting on the road for a bit, and they saw a big posse of the nancies, plus several other MTB and gravel groups, probably at least 40-50 riders in total – Goyt a popular destination this evening!!

We need to be at Sutton Hall by 8:45 (Leathers having not answered the phone), we are at the bottom of the climb out with an hour to do. We unleash team E to go ahead, whilst team muscle push up to the finger post before riding out.

Great views, great skies, chilly descending at speed to the bottom of the oven, before the short climb up to standing stone, and down through the forest (running groups out) into the setting sun.

Regrouping at Sutton hall at 20:41! – we hate to admit it, but the E Bikers had more fun tonight.

El Pres’s birthday tipple will be deferred to next week as we ran out of time for a stop.

Quite inside, Lucan always a good option, burgers all round (almost), and the high table!

PTD is getting to play with big percussive drills to dismantle the old bog at the Shrubberies in anticipation of the modern extension. Smiffy recounts how he used to motocross with Ratboy’s dad, hence how he knows Josh (and the chat at Dale top last week). Dunc is now a convert to electric cars (might be some time before that translates to bikes), and Titanic plum porter to finish off the evening!

Somehow we have ended up 3 pints good!

El Pres’s birthday tipple will be deferred to next week as we ran out of time for a stop.

Big turn out this week

Words by Alex, photos & video by Simon, Steve & Pete

Crew (aka the bakers dirty dozen): El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Dr S, PTD, 3 Sheds, Smiffy, Lee, Bern, Dunc, G, Stunt

Route: Bottom of the Zag, Back Eddisbury lane, Cliff lane, Calrofold Lane, Lidgetts lane, back of Kerridge, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley Vale, poachers snicket, Oakebank, Kiskhill lane, Jumper Lane, Blaze Hill, Kettleshulme road past the collapse, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone, 1975 stone, Sponds Trig, gritstone route to Dale top, choose your descent back to Bakstonedale road, Pott Shrigley, Bolly, Middlewood, 5 clouds.

Conditions: Warm and sunny, cooling off later.

Notes:

With another fine evening, Lee masterminds a plan to eat alfresco at 5 clouds and cater with mexican takeaway. Route plans are amended as Stakeside had caught fire the day before burning a huge area, and needing helicopter water bombing!

We opt for heading for Sponds via the back of Kerridge, tis a good plan, and it brings out a huge crew – including a welcome visit from 3 Sheds, and a “G actually makes the ride” shocker!

20250501iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1087

PTD arrives on a shiny new mint green disgustingly light e machine (turning many of us the same colour in envious appreciation).

It’s a multiple meet point kind of route, so we only become a dozen at the start of Kerridge, and a dirty dozen with Dunc by the end. Weirdly fast rolling on the baked mud and dry grass – but definitely a good thing!

Heading for Waulkmill Wood

A lot of climbing involved in tonight’s route, but plenty of folk to catch up with and chat to along the way.

Smiffy Steve Video Report 2025-05-01

Fine views, flower filled meadows, and lines of empty bulk powder trailers amongst the sights to feast the eyes on.

Mojitos time at the 1975 Stone

Stunt has promised Mohitos at the 1975 stone, and delivers with fresh mint, ice, a fine 7 year old rum and fizzy water (thanks to Bern and Lee for being water haulers). There is a bit of a breeze up here, so some windproofs needed.

E-boys up on the GT

Good views from Sponds trig – including the farmers daughter on the quadbike (with obligatory collie) who is making her way slowly through the flock of ewes and lambs. She comes over to us and asks which route we are thinking of taking down, so we ask her which way she would prefer us to go, and get politely directed away from the sheep back along the gristone and to the main track by the wall. We oblige – and for once it too is fast and dry.

Headed for the Sun & Sponds

A few black cows grazing on the edges here, a lone walker, and a lady fell runner who pops up out of a dip to give her and Butty a nasty moment. Collision avoided, but probably not a good advert for MTBikers.

At Dale top we bump into a very relaxed and chatty Ratboy on a gold coloured bike (and his very friendly dog – complete with rapper style neckchain)

Some dubious looking clouds are coming, so time for the decent of your choice and for Lee to get the food order in.

All routes down are excellent – although the phone signal is less so. Lee and Bern only manage to the get the app working down in Pott Shrigley.

We head to five clouds in several mini groups to find plenty of outside tables (and an understated british eagle steel tourer with plenty of quality features)

Plenty of cloudy ales (aka Troll juice) on offer, as well as some good Lager. Lee and Bern arrive with a selection of Burritos and Quesidillas which go down nicely.

It does start to get quite chilly, so we head inside when there is enough seating available, and also slide into the 6.5% stout zone!

20250501iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back dual wide camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_1102

Vintage car porn of the Porche and Bentley varieties is shared, stories are swapped, and tales are told.

All too soon it’s time to go, and although Butty’s ride back from the Kingfisher last week at 40 seconds will never be beaten as shortest ride home, it was still a good answer for the Macc/Tythy boys.

Will the fine weather last?….well the heat will go at the weekend, but what then?? Feels like we have had a summer already and it’s only just May!?

TNR 17-04-2025 Return to the Forest

Crew: El Pres, Dr S, Butty, Lee, Dunc, Smiffy, Slim, Stunt.

Route: Bottom of the Zag, Walker Barn, Charity, cut across to Narnia, trails from the Bench to the fire road, the “rollercoaster” to the main drag, Witches cottage, Hardingland, Lower Teggs, Leathers, reverse ressie, white rabbit ascent, LHS trail from the gate all the way back down to the bottom of the white rabbit track, singletrack over the wall, bob’s bench, lower ressie, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Mild, still and dry.

Notes:

A fine evening for a ride, and a plan to pootle about in the Forest ahead of a Sutton Hall table reservation.

Arriving at the bottom of the Zag well warmed up we sketch out a route to take advantage of dry trails.

A little plume of smoke at the top of Charity Tarmac is investigated…it’s just past the post apocalyptic encampment in the corner of the field, and we think it’s a couple of dead sheep being cremated by the farmer…no one about, but it seems to be a well managed event.

Style points being awarded for most awkward fence traverse of the night – with Pete and Smiffy on the podium for wobbly midsections!

Firm and flowy all the way down to Narnia..where looking across past Croker hill a hot air balloon is clearly visible in the distance.

Butty takes us on a tour of the trails down from just past the Narnia bench (watch out for those low hanging spindly branches) and then through the thicket to the rollercoaster mini loop down to the main drag. Short climb back up to Witches cottage, before descending a very loose and dusty Hardingland.

There is enough time to make another ascent – this time to head up White Rabbit before coming back down the forest trails off to the Left of the dedicated bike route down at the fence. Yes it’s dry, but boy it’s a bit technical for some of us in places!

One boggy bit at the edge of the trees seems a bit of an anomaly, but we all survive.

Great sunset light as a backdrop to it all.

Regrouping at the bottom, the wall opposite the white rabbit track is down..for easy entry into the behind the wall tracks. Before we head over, a white hatchback and a black hoodied rider on a powerful ebike need to conclude their business before haring off down the lane! Dodgy dealings for sure!!.

Crossing the wall is as dodgy as we get to enjoy rooty twisty lines down to Bob’s bench and hence round and down to Sutton Hall.

It’s pretty busy, and there is live music being played! We are popped in the back corner, and settle in for some fine ale and a burger. The music is a little “pub singer” esque with a guy with a keyboard, and the cover songs rather short…it’s only when we read the notices on the chalkboards that we realise we are hearing the Name that Tune quiz night!

We are well looked after, and with an Easter Weekend ahead, a mini AoE do whisky before heading home.

No encounters with anthropomorphic rabbits reported.

  • A big turn out
  • Amazing dry , dusty and sunny weather
  • A lass playing banjo on a boat on the canal
  • An encounter with a group of young stags
  • A bit of messing about on & sessioning the Knott and then …
  • A bit of messing about on the “Bike Park” bits
  • A visit to the Cage

  • a great sunset & post sunset light as we navigated the Poynton inclines back towards The Kingfisher.

I do believe its my first ever trip to a Wetherspoons ..and definitely a TNR first . Lee, Bern and Smiffy eventually appeared ..Bern had suffered a puncture.

Notes:

Troll declares a Biddulph Moor BBQ to tempt us into banjo country as the dry weather continues.

Logistics include arranging vehicles in the correct order for getaways (which is almost achieved first time)

Impressively we have seven riders ready to go before 6:30, with a rendevous with SmiffE (riding all the way over using his range extender). It could have all gone horribly wrong as our intrepid friend has ended up with his other half’s phone, and hence no direct access to group chat and live location!! But it’s an anti climax as we meet him on Top road within minutes 🙂

The ride plan is simple, head to the Cloud, and enjoy the trails in the woods. With dry conditions the windy woody ascent is a joy, and the rocky trail up to the Cloud is almost cleaned by Dunc!

At the trig there are some runners, walkers, and a couple of stripy tee shirt wearing lads on full susses who proceed to show their riding prowess with a lot of big air – whilst in close formation!

20250403iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0624

The wind is really cutting through despite the spring sunshine, so time to head down the other rocky trail back to the woods. Then swoopy berms and rooty bumps down to the bottom, another ascent..in which we somehow lose Smiffy (he’s lost a bit of his helmet and had gone back up to the trig to get it)..do the right hand side trail, find Smiffy again, then cross the main track for the really uppy downy flowy one.

Butty takes a poll re ascending for a third time, but to no avail, we retrace our route back to the road, and find it’s suprisingly downhill for a lot of the way. A short road section up to the megalithic Bridestones, with a crescent moon above, then road back to Hot lane for beer and BBQ.

20250403Canon EOS 70DEF50mm f-1.4 USMIMG_3461-Enhanced-NR

Obligatory fruity cloudy ale in the mini keg, some Stout in the bottle, Leffe’s cooling in the bucket, logs on the firebowl, and watermelon and feta on the himalyan salt block for starters! Heaven on so many levels.

20250403iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0636

To fully enjoy the experience a “kenny coat” is needed aka smug jacket with hood, as the easterly breezes bite harder as the temperature falls.

20250403iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0633

Main course is a BBQ finished spit roast of chicken and gammon, with potatoes, salad, stuffing, and homemade chimmichurri! with fresh rolls. Yum.

20250403Canon EOS 70DEF50mm f-1.4 USMIMG_3488-Enhanced-NR

Full bellies, inner glow from the beer, eclectic soundtrack on the sound system, and banter round the fire…all is good with the world (assuming you ignore the current state of the world).

20250403Canon EOS 70DEF50mm f-1.4 USMIMG_3508-Enhanced-NR

El Pres and Smiffy are going to ride back, but we have had so much fun it’s almost midnight before they depart, and we leave the stayers to the selection of whisky that has suddenly appeared as if my magic.

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Troll, Bern, Lee, Smiffy, Stunt

Route: Bolly Maze, Hurst Lane, Jackson Lane, Redway Lane, Nancyside lane, North Farm, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley vale, Poachers snicket, Ascent of Oakenbank, Jumper Lane, Blaze hill, main road to Bakestonedale road, Gritstone Trail, Sponds Hill, Dale Top, “wall” descent, Moorside lane, Pott Shrigley, Poachers.

Conditions: Mild & dry, windy higher up.

Notes:

Back from foreign manoeuvers Pete takes charge this week declaring a Bolly friendly route to finish at the Poachers (he was getting withdrawal symptoms!).

With fine weather and end of the alpine season means another double digit sized crew, although of course we start out with fewer and let some catch up en route.

20250327iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_0514

Properly light (and clocks change this weekend), so lots of folks out enjoying the outdoors alongside our good selves. Time to be nice, say hi, and pedal slowly through the puppy training class in Ingersely vale!

Butty chooses the top of Oakenbank to break out his special blend of whisky’s for a proper toast to young Rory – the apple of his grandfathers eye 🙂

20250327iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 2.22mm f-2.2IMG_0516

Lee arrives just in time for the last dram, and by the time we are readying to ride on, it has become dark, and lights needed from here on in.

20250327iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0519

The road to Kettleshulme is still closed due to the collapsed carriageway, but it is open to cycles..time to take advantage of a traffic free climb on tarmac. Tis a big hole in the road, and you do need to stick to the fenced in cycle lane (as Butty discovers when he goes parallel, but can’t get through at the far end).

20250327iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0526

The Bolshaw powders trucks are also taking advantage by parking on the road, saving some HGV tight turns in and out of their normal bays.

Even better we get some wind assist higher up to help us on our way.

Gate to the gritstone is hanging on one hinge, the farmer here really hates spending on hinges and posts, preferring a bit of bale twine instead!

20250327iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0529

Very dry on the tops, with winter feed station set up for the ewes near the Sponds trig, where we hit the wind face on!

Extra layers rapidly donned, a quick photo op, and then down and across to Dale top.

A time check and lack of enthusiam for pedalling into strong wind equals a straight down by the wall approach….and it’s a cracker of a ride on dry short grass. A gentle bimble along Moorside lane is accompanied by shouts of TOAD! as there are lots of them standing still and quite difficult to distinguish from the dark sheep turds also strewn across the via bianche. We think no toads were harmed in the process.

Route one back to the a rather quiet poachers, where we get our food order in before the nancies. Has the change in beer, and the raising of the food prices pushed folk elsewhere?? Certainly the bolly harriers were not in attendance, and the Nancies were low in numbers, and lots of the other groups of regulars were not there….

Plenty to chat about on a cosy table of 10, but a few yawns around the table later on mean it’s only a token Leffe AoE. Still some things you can always rely on with Bern’s pic of his creamy pudding coming in later on 😉

Headwinds on the ride home meant pedalling downhill!!

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Troll, Croxy, Smiffy, Lee, Stunt
Fireside: Dunc, Ruth

Route: Back Eddisbury Lane, Zag, Teggs main descent, then left where the two tracks join up the path to the top of the steps down to the ford, lower teggs, Smithy, reverse Ressie, white rabbit ascent, S bends then singletrack up to Shutlingsloe gate, steps ascent, Pigford moor, back of the Moon, Ferriser.

Conditions: Warm and Dry, dusty trails in places, cool breeze later.

Notes:
A welcome week of sunny weather = first campfire night of the year!
Despite some of the usual suspects being on foreign assignment to catch the last of the snow, we gather a respectable crew, the fine weather temping out Croxy!
Troll is in charge of Beer logistics, and Smiffy sorts Pizza delivery via son in law ?
Stunt sorts a route and we are good to go….with the other usual suspects running late ?

We are riding in the light under cloudless skies, a steady stream of walkers and dogs heading back to their cars on our entry to Teggs.
The descent is dry and loose, and with the sun now set, some lights are useful under the trees. PTD has persuaded us to explore the path heading left back up to the steps by the ford, as we’ve not done it for ages, and it should be dry.
He’s not wrong, higher up the shrubbery on the RH side of the path has been cut back to the stumps…showing just how steep the slope is should you come off the trail! Nice final descent – as long as you avoid spaniels ?

We are united with Smiffy and Lee at the bottom reservoir, and Troll at Leathers.
A chatty climb to Nessit is topped with Cuba Libre’s at Dan’s bench with some of Shaun’s triple gold medal winning rum, coke and a splash of line juice, very nice.

Continuing our theme of taking the path less travelled, it’s time to see if the singletrack off the bottom of the S bends is navigable…and it is (although there are still some spiky bushes in places). El Pres suffers a whippy little branch flicking his nipple – apparently it stings like you know what!

A final climb up the Shutlingsloe steps – mind the yellow frog on the slabs, then across the matting (or in several places “up slope” of it) to the narrow gate. The down and up to “Back of the Moon” in excellent condition! Choice of Red or Blue run along the ridge and down the slope to the main track from Standing Stone.

Team e head right to RV with Pizza boy, and the rest of us head to Ferriser to set up camp.
Trolls keg is filled with cloudy smooth slightly fruity ale (who’d of thought it?), there is a big box of Brewdog cans, a fire is quickly going, and fuel is foraged

Pizza’s arrive – together with garlic and herb sauce sachets, which “condiment Chris” enjoys so much that it splatters over his neighbours shoe!

Stars are super clear, plenty of satellites too, and long exposure shots capture many more than the eye can see.

Croxy is full of praise for the Altrincham everyman cinema’s 11:30am “Silver Screening” (with coffee and cake!) and for Black Bag ..no not the famous viz sheepdog parody – but Cate Blanchett in spy thriller!
Grumblings about Shimano Gravel/MTB brake incompatibility (Coley to the rescue with the special adaptor tool), and you know your offspring have borrowed your riding shorts when you find their bank card in your pocket ?
Brewdog stout not up to the high standards of Titanic Plum Porter or Wincle’s Old Hag, but the Elvis juice is always a highlight.

Dunc joins us, then experiences a moment of plastic “napalm” when the bottle formerly containing the Cuba Libre pops on the fire! Luckily its only a few leg hairs which get taken out (time for a roady leg shave?)
Plenty of ribaldry too, and a lot of poking the fire with a stick. Extra fun had breaking the long logs in two when burnt enough to do so (calibrated tap with heel of a five ten)

Ruth arrives, we heroically share out the last of the beer, and Stunt produces some whisky mac to toast in season.

Foolishly we head downhill through the trees once the fire is thoroughly doused, it may be dry (thank goodness) but it’s a bit of a mess, with more care needed than we may be capable of!

All riders accounted for, we pop out onto the fireroad, then bonus trail down to Bob’s bench and homeward bound (possibly overdressed).

Crew: EL Pres, Slim, Butty, Dunc, Bern, Dr S, Stunt
Route: Riverside Car Park, Bollin valley way to Prestbury, Chelford Road, Findlow Hill Lane, Snicket to Artists Lane, Loop from the Beacon entrance, The Edge, descent to Mottram road, Swiss Hill, contour along past Wizards well back to the Beacon, Artists Lane, Windmill Wood to the Owl, Artists Lane, Prestbury Legh Arms.

Notes:

Pete plots a return to Alderley Edge woods lured by the deal on burgers and beer at the Legh arms. Given the returning light tis also likely our only chance to do so under cover of darkness.

The only fly in the ointment is the food cut off of 8pm, requiring a 5:30 start (FFS to quote Butty).

Smiffy is early shocker!! Butty, Dunc and Dr S will meet us at various points between the start and Prestbury.

We are riding in the light with sunset a good half hour away. Dr S needs Butty’s mini shock pump to administer some firmness to his front forks which have deflated. Some fiddling needed as the valve pin seems to have stuck down, but we get there in the end.

20250313iPhone 14 ProiPhone 14 Pro back triple camera 6.86mm f-1.78IMG_0246

Pete has gone on ahead to ensure our food order goes in, and discovers that they are out of the veggie burgers, so two of our party switch to meat for the evening.

Climbing up Chelford road the setting sun is colouring the sky some wonderful colours, with hints of peach and pink, sillouhetting the skeletal network of branches in the tree canopy.

We are doing the bits we didn’t do last visit, so avoiding the turn down Bradford lane, we wiggle along until the wizard then a quick stretch along the main road to the entrance by the cottage.

Dusk in the woods could be a little spooky? Debates about would you bivvy alone here…

The vista at the Edge rocks is for once a passing glance, having had the sunset show to our left. Stunt leads us down some lovely dry down and ups and shepherds us to the right at the correct point for the rocky rutty chute to the road.

Now the return climb up Swiss hill (don’t take Squirrels leap by mistake!) which tonight is dry and grippy. E bikers are in smug mode whilst the rest of us get proper heartrate cardio zone minutes.

Back on the Edge, the contouring trail back to the Beacon is it’s normal narrow and surprisingly technical self, with no room for error, and we are strung out like a festoon of bobbing red lights.

20250313iPhone 13 ProiPhone 13 Pro back triple camera 5.7mm f-1.5IMG_9896

Pete has brought whisky mac’s to warm us with sweet gingery infused firewater. Tis very welcome, and although it’s a sub five night, it’s not so cold in the woods with no breeze to speak of.

20250313iPhone 13 ProiPhone 13 Pro back triple camera 5.7mm f-1.5IMG_9892

We have time for the Windmill wood trails down to the Owl, but mind the new ponds that are being dug either side of the track near the start. After the filth of our previous excursion, this time it’s soft in places but mainly dry until the final section before the sandy field.

The farm opposite the Owl on the corner – is now fully exposed with the clearance of hedges and scrub in progress last time now complete. Development of multiple luxury properties to come??

A nip in the air on the lanes back to the Legh arms and into the Pub for 8pm.

Plotting of possible routes for TNR’s to come, nostalgia for 80’s films, and chuckling at old photos of some of our number. Debate on what triple cooked chips means for a pub kitchen!

Bern heads off at sensible o’clock and sends a pic of his creamy pudding later ?

The 10pm cutoff is somewhat disappointing, but the bargain bills are not.

Chilly rides home.
