TNR 13-1-22 Listerine Cups Rediscovered

20220113-IMG_8288.jpg

Words and photos by Pete

Crew : PTD, Troll, Bern , Dunc, El Pres , Pete

Pub : Lee

Route : MC , Zig , Zag, Charity , no extension, St Stone , Nessit, middle of downhill course, tarmac to Hanging Gate , , wicked mix stop on Ridge Hill, Withenshawe La descent to the Ryles Arms

Conditions: cold , misty in the forest, no rain, little wind , muddy

Notes

An evening of collecting crew as we ride …Dunc at the end of the Zig , the troll up just beyond Standing Stone, and Lee at the pub !

Paul has a plan to get to the far side of Shutlingsloe and then via Nabbs Rd over  to the Ryles .

It is a fine idea , but my the bottom of charity we realised it was not doable with an 8:15pm table booking at The Ryles .

So, a change of route to go through the forest and then tarmac it out up past the Hanging Gate and beyond.

Paul has re-discovered the infamous Listerine Cups, and as it is definitely sub 5c, we are treated to PTD wicked mix : green chartreuse, brandy, southern comfort.

Then its a hooning descent to the Ryles ..for excellent beer , food and service .

The best grilled gammon I have ever eaten !

20220113-IMG_8294.jpg

Chris orders “death by custard” but flinched half way through !

It is a very cold descent to Langley , and feels a long way home for some of us

But it has been a fine ride and an excellent hostelry

Words by Pete, Photos by Butty & Pete

Crew : TJ, Butty, PTD, Pete, Troll

Route: The Maze , Beeston Brow, Long Lane, Birchencliffe, Dale Top , Bakestonedale Rd, Spuley Lane, Blaze Hill, Jumper Lane, Oakenbank , The Poachers

Conditions : Cold

Notes :

With all the southern boys (apart from The Troll) and the Tythy Brigade  being hors de combat for various reasons …it was left to the Bollington Boys and the Poynton Posse to sort ride logistics.

A table at The Poachers secured for 8.45pm , we mustered at The Maze for a chilly circuit of Upper Bollingtonia and its proximities .

PTD had a good route plan …which soon involved  lots of climbing. Beeston brow is an early challenge , but the peace and quiet of long lane was our reward .

More climbing and the odd bit of getting off and pushing got us up to Dale Top.

Lights off so we could get the best view of a very clear night sky in a distinctly chilly breeze. Cassiopeia, The Pole Star ??, the plough, Orion, The Pleiades ….

20220110-WhatsApp Image 2022-01-07 at 9.02.06 AM (2).jpg

A veritable astronomical feast with Paul educating us on the location of the Pole Star.

It was fortunate that most of us were gazing up as we were suddenly blessed with a brilliant view of a meteor streaking across the heavens from West to East with a really long tail.

Slippery as hell coming off Dale top and down to Bakestonedale Rd – but definitely a proper bit of mountain biking .

More climbing again – this time up Blaze Hill – but tarmac is always easier – and we were spurred onward by the promise of some in flight refreshments .

I think we had a TNR first this week  – a wee dram of Glenfiddich at the Jumper Lane bench. Thanks for bringing the metal shot set, Butty.

20220110-WhatsApp Image 2022-01-07 at 9.10.40 AM.jpg

I think it was good that our consumption was moderate , as both Paul and I nearly came a cropper on the descent. At the bottom of Lithkill Lane , where you need to turn 90 degrees right to Oakenbank , there was a patch of wet loose stuff;

Fantastic crescent ? moon hangs low over the town as we drop towards the Poachers.

Crescent Moon over Kerridge Ridge

Poachers was at least seeing a little trade – they were down to 3 staff due to ‘Rona.

Phil and Butty introduced a TNR first in the food ordering :  Table mushrooms &  Table Spring Rolls

Scampi and chips ? , Dortmunder Union Pils , Leffe and a mini AOE were the order of the day (at least for me)

Oh…and a bit of a conversation about Jimi Hendrix .

TNR 16-12-2021 Christmas Cocktails & Boys Meal

Crew: EL Pres, PTD, Troll, 3 Sheds, Bern, Butty, Coley, Croxy, Doog, Lee, Mark, Slim, Stunt.

Pub: Mawds, El Pud, Nick, TJ, Adrian & Biscuit

Route: MC, Zig Zags, Teggs Cocktail bar, Descent to car park, shortest route to Bob’s Bench, Leathers

Conditions: Mild, Dry, Muddy and moist trails

Our annual slack ride with festive snackery and colourful liquids was this year preceded by the pre ride test protocol, where being negative is a positive, and banter can be found in any situation #Teststripwoodbackgrounds.

Under an almost full moon, and breaks in the cloud, the riding contingent assemble at Muller corner. We have our first incident on the Zig when Doog breaks his chain…luckily we spot our missing comrade before we head onto the road and out of sight! Lee rides to the rescue, and we split into two echelons (cocktails cannot be left waiting). We have regrouped by the time we are through the last gate into Teggs, and despite PTD taking us on an optional uppy bit for those who fancied a bit of technical descent into the Bench, we are ready for the first course!

Phils Warm Sprouts on sticks with Satay sauce (roasted in butter and maple syrup) and 4 each! very delicious

Pauls “The orange one” A whisky mac with a twist to warm the cockles and wash down the nibblage

A wonderful vista as well, tis a great spot.

Time for the Teggs descent (with Butty catching us up) and plenty to focus on, main face damp and soft but not muddy, the grass at the bottom possibly the trickiest bit! Although getting your bike through the gate at the top led to one snapped rear mudguard for Lee.

Route one to Bob’s bench as somehow despite a 6pm start we will only be there at 7:30 ahead of an 8pm pub.

Second course is a bumper selection:

Homemade mince pies (with homemade mincemeat) courtesy of Paul dental nurse (El Pres had 3!)

Phils “The brown one with floaty bits” Butter infused spiced warm rum

Pauls “The green one” Gin and Blue Curaco, with Mango and passion fruit juice, and a touch of red vermouth (very smooth)

Croxy’s Cava for some fizz (also went nicely in the “green one” too!)

…suitably refreshed… time to head to the Leathers for the meal proper.

Chef did us proud, with sublime scallops, and properly prepped pheasant for 12 of the 17, and all plates left the table with no leftovers 🙂

Duchars, Landlord and some Rocking Rudolf meant no ale choice was a bad one. Lots of catching up with some of the country members, plenty of mirth. Those who could not be with us, know you were missed and not forgotten!

A serious AoE emerged led by a fired up Troll in full Ian Paisley voice, ordering multiple double whiskies!!

Doing our bit for the local economy had never felt so important, as we were pretty much the only clientele, and I think I recall us getting high fives from the barmaid as we left!

Somehow we all got home in one piece!

TNR 9-12-2021 Aquaman

Crew: Billy no mates Stunt

Route: Riverside park, Prestbury, Chelford Road, Findlow Hill Lane, Bradford Lane, Hocker Lane, Birtles Lane, Chelford Road, Prestbury, Riverside, Tythy.

Conditions: Wet!

After 50mm of rain overnight (on top of another 100mm in the previous week) and more arriving across TNR time, the excuses not to ride reached epidemic proportions!

With no one to cramp my style I headed out c4pm to attempt to get out and back to Alderley Park via the back lanes before the worst of the weather.

The riverside fields had clearly been flooded overnight with little drifts of fine sandy silt atop the mud, and debris scattered about a long way “inland”. Grip was sparse once the double track ended, but progress was possible with a bit of extra effort. Hiking the bike over the gate towards Prestbury the proper surface was welcome, but even here there were sections where mud was laid atop after the deluge.

Coming into the village there was not a light to be seen – a big power outage right up to the Roundabout and beyond, Co-op closed, but Chelford Road houses on the other side were definitely “on” .

Light rain now falling, and glasses steaming up on the climb. Plenty of running water on the road, and a big puddle across half the road by the entrance to Hare Hill Gardens. This was just play compared to the flood as you approached School lane before the RH turn past Arthur Burns. Full width of the road and c30 m long, it turned out to be over half a metre deep, and not quite over the top of my tyres, before shallowing out. Boots full of water, I advised a lady in her Audi TT that a U turn might be wise!

Rain getting heavier, Bradford lane running as a stream, Hocker full of deep puddles, but a good way to come back and avoid a second immersion to the knees!

Managed to stay warm as the dampness seeped up my legs, and the cold rain chilled from the top down.

On the positive side my new waterproof gloves had held up pretty well!

Back for tea and medals by 5:15 (Leffe’s in the fridge for later)

TNR 2-12-2021 ShutlingsNo!

Crew: EL Pres, PTD, Bern, Troll, Croxy, Dr S, Slim, Stunt

Route: MC, Zig Zags, Walker Barn, Charity, Narnia, Lesser travelled fireroads to Forest Chapel, Standing Stone, Kirsten Munt descent, usual tracks down past Bob’s bench to the Smithy, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Sheet ice in places, frozen crust to the ground, no wind.

We may have missed the snow at the weekend, but temperatures had again plummeted and full winter gear essential.

Bern was bringing beverage to celebrate his birthday, and the inital route plan was to head into the forest via charity, then go up the Shutlingsloe steps, ascent the Macclesfield Eiger for drinks, then come back across a hopefully frozen Pigford moor to the back of the Moon descent.

Team all assembled (with only Dr S making a possible ride status into mission possible!) we enjoy the zigs and the climb to finally get warm by the top. Croxy suggests we invoke a whoever first mentions health or pensions has to buy a round later (this is a sad reflection of our age profile these days!)

Descending down to Walker Barn there are flashing orange lights glowing on Charity Lane, and as we turn off from the main road we immediately hit sheet ice, and not far ahead is an old silver RAV4 sideways blocking the road. One occupant is gingerly shuttling back from the grit bin to spread salt under the wheels.

Once we have hiked our bikes around the obstacle, we offer assistance to push the corners while they try to get straight. After a couple of attempts it is done…we leave them to the “interesting” reverse back to the main road.

We negotiate a few more bad ice patches before reaching the offroad proper, and re-evaluate the route.

PTD leads us on the higher RHS of charity which is ice free other than the puddles, and only has one old patch of icy snow to worry about. There are lights in the trees, with more youthful riders sessioning the tricky tracks by the looks of it.

We turn in at Narnia, and abandon any thoughts of Shutlingsloe for the bench, where Bern serves warm mince pies, and steaming mulled wine in proper crockery!

More PTD route leadership takes us on fire roads less travelled (and sometimes very steep) to the road just below Forest Chapel, where we are relieved to see that the gritter has been past recently. One patch of ice on the exit to the standing stone lane, but nothing otherwise to fear.

Time is running short, so straight on the aross to the S bends (one owl flies across in front of us) , but then down the steps of munt, left turn, and the normal exit protocol round the ressie and out at the Leathers. One patch of ice after the little dam catches Bern out, but his careful packing saves the Crockery! Shoulder less so 🙁 , he heads home for media duties on the radio!

The remaining seven achieve Sutton Hall – which is very quiet, but enjoy superb ale selection, and carnivourous menu. New waiting staff, but same excellent service.

Pigs in blankets side orders for some! A youthful crowd of well dressed folk appear from the back room everyonce in a while, so there is some xmas party activity going on it seems. It triggers some fun discussions about the magnetic watch from the old Bond films! PTD begins to plan the xmas cocktails for 2 weeks time.

No axis of pudding tonight, but a fine whisky to fortify as we head out into fresh wet snow.

an Axis of P*ss was observed on the drive as the cold air obviously got to parts other beers couldn’t reach!

Notes

Oh I do like it when a plan comes together . TJ had floated the idea of a post ride gathering in his back garden a week or two back .

It started with a  Bollingtonia rendezvous on the viaduct . Where Paul kindly fixes the damage to my mudhugger rear mudguard which I had failed to notice before leaving my garage .

Never underestimate the ingenuity of PTD and his Gorilla tape !

20211125-IMG_6530Canon EOS M3

Butty arrived and took full advantage of his e-advantage to get us climbing a local circuit , the up side being that this gave us all a hefty appetite for what was awaiting us back in Poynton.

Fortunately it was cold and dry for most of the ride , but as we headed along the canal towpath towards the Jackson homestead it started a gentle drizzle . A warning of what was to come.

As we stopped under a canal bridge somewhere a bit north of Adlington , waiting  for TJ to catch us up , Butty and a few others spotted something “cat-sized” drop from the opposite bank into the water. Best guesses are either a Mink or an Otter .

WhatsApp Image 2021-11-26 at 8.25.28 AM

Once we arrived at the Jackson estate it was “all systems go” …fire pit quickly started ..beers distributed and the pie extravaganza was underway.

I was a little worried that I may have seriously over – specced the pie demand , but everything (bar one Cheese & Onion) was scoffed .

20211125-IMG_6516Canon EOS M3

And then Butty produced desert of Ginger cake and brandy sauce

As the showers began to arrive TJ managed to produce some handy “Tarpaulin” type covers , and we constructed our own version of a refugee camp . We kept fairly dry but in the process we got a bit smoked up . Kippered !

TNR 18-11-2021 Halo Moon

Crew: Slim, El Pres, PTD, TJ, Troll, Lee, Bern, Coley, Stunt

Route: RB, Clarke Lane, Redway past White Nancy and onto the back of Kerridge with loop back through Waulkmill wood to Ingersley Vale, poachers snicket, reverse Oakenbank, Kiskhill/Jumper Lane, Blaze hill, Kettleshulme Road, Bakenstonedale road, Gritstone Trail, Sponds Hill, Dale Top, Quarries Descent, Birchencliffe, Long Lane, Green Lane/Beeston Mount, Vale

Conditions: Mild, Muddy.

Notes:

Pete plans the route for a Poachers finish, but has to scramble for a reservation at the Vale when the Poachers cancel our booking (staff shortages?), with an earlier finish there is some doubt that we will achieve the plan, but we pop on live location for the Troll to meet us and set off.

Back of Kerridge very slithery, and mud covered tyres on slimy slabs not the most reassuring entry to Waulkmill wood, where Pete warned us of missing spaniel poo to the left hand side!

Gathering the Troll at the corner of the Poachers, the uphill begins with the steady gradient of Oakenbank, before the steep lane up Kiskhill, murky skies all day are clearing with clear views well across the plain to North Wales, and Winter Hill, but no sign of Holme Moss.

At the corner of Jumper lane and Blaze will we decide to go for it on the full route, and head onto tarmac proper to get across to the gritstone. A slight tailwind to help up the track and into the bottom of the clouds, vis is pretty poor but we (mostly) find our way to the trig point, and the right direction back down . We are soon out of the cloud on the uppy/downy bumps towards Dale Top, and from there take the ridge past the new plantation and down the slippy grassy rockiness to Moorside Lane.

No one risks the grassy LHS at Birchencliffe, and the smell of hot brakes at Shigley road. One last little climb to ensure we do Beeston Brow, and regroup at the Vale.

Food quality has improved of late here, and the pies looked a good choice, not sure we had earned puddings, but some cunning cross selling tempted almost half our number to succumb.

Early closing again at the Vale, meant that a final whisky did not count as an Axis of Evil (perhaps it was an Axis of Pudding night!), cold weather anticipated next week.

Amazing full moon with double halo through the cloud to light the way home.

TNR 11-11-2021 Two pub and dozen slackers?

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, TJ, Bern, Dr S, G, Troll, 3 Sheds, Lee, Slim

Pub: Dunc, Adrian

Route: MC, zig zags, charity, extension, standing stone, nessit, ressies, Leathers, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Mild, windy, muddy in places

It all began so well, a target of Cumberland Brook from Danebower , aka “the middle entrance”, a fine bunch of fellows, G actually arriving (and on an acoustic bike)!!

..and then some delay with start of ride faff from the Troll with a puncture out of the van,

…the lack of answer from the Leathers to ring in a food order

…the non phone friendly online booking for plan B at Sutton Hall (watch out for invisible spaces on the end of email addresses!)

…the increasingly gusty wind

and at the top of the Zag we don’t have time to get the route plan executed, Dr S has his car in what is now the wrong car park (and the risk of being locked in), and a general acceptance that a furtle round the forest is acceptable.

So with good company, a fair wind and a new plan we split into a 10 and a duo, with PTD and Dr S heading down Saddlers way on a rescue mission to reposition the motor, and the rest of us heading up to Charity.

Chazza changes with the years and the seasons, and tonight it was in a rare in-between state, damp enough for all but the biggest rocks to be held by the soil, dry enough that the mud is thin – but actually very slippy.

Made for a technical descent when at speed!

We all survive and follow up (down) with the extension.

Writing off thoughts of the summer “New favourite” RHS from standing stone, we head on to Nessit, with the singletrack from the bench by Shutlingsloe gate to the S bends getting a well needed traverse (or not in the case of 3 sheds who lost it half way along and went off piste).

More general slackness, admiring of the view, and the suggestion of using the remaining time for a cheeky half in the Leathers before heading to the food stop at Sutton Hall.

Motion carried, the normal descent leads us down through carpets of pine needles and to the welcoming embrace of John’s real ale taps. Warm enough to stand outside for those that wanted to, and the cheeky half (or two) went down nicely.

Discipline suprisingly reasserted itself and we managed to keep it to a single beer order, and be at Sutton Hall on time.

Hobgoblin, a shining, and a tart stout tickled various tastebuds, Bern enjoyed playing havoc with the food and drink deliveries, puppy dog tales, and the usual venting of lifes frustrations (in a non PC and amusing manner), and some floating of ideas for trips and adventures next year.

TJ gets the whisky in, and Bowmore 15 (at a specially negotiated price) was so good, that the AoE had a second.

Did a couple of folk miscount their beer tally? for truth and reconciliation report to the President!

In other news from earlier in the ride – the my ebike is better than your ebike because ….had now begun!

Words by Pete , Photos by Butty & Bern

Crew : Pete , Butty , El Pres, Bern , PTD , Dunc, Dr S

Pub : Kersh

Route: Rainbow bridge, Snickets to Tythy and past water treatement works and Under the railway by the golf course, Bollin valley to Prestbury, Chelford Road, Finlow Hill Lane, Bradford Lane, Hocker Lane , Slade Lane, Findlow Hill Lane (again), And then back to Prezzas and up to the Springwood

Conditions : Cold , fairly dry, and starlit . Freezing on departure from the Springwood

Notes

Our first “its dark at the start”  ride of the autumn .

It was flipping cold but dry and clear – ideal conditions for a little venture West – and it felt  like a long time since we had done so.

Before we even got through Tythy Dunc had to return to base to fix a disintegrating pedal .

I nicked/recycled a route from Feb 2020  (but dropped the Windmill Wood loop)

WhatsApp Image 2021-11-04 at 11.01.03 PM

Highlights :

  • A blissfully quiet and calm ride once we were off the main roads
  • Stargazing on Finlow lane corner(Cassiopeia and the Pleiades I recall ) whilst sipping  whisky
  • Paul , bless him, had brought an Aberlour 10 year old Malt ! (And already done 12 miles before we began the TNR)
  • A lack of mud
  • A virtually empty Springwood Beefeater and very attentive staff

Lowlights

  • Mechanicals for Bern …a chain snap and a loose calliper
  • Frosty saddles on our exit from the Beefeater (0.2C when I got home)

TNR 21-10-2021 The three climbs : Teggs, Nessit, Narnia

20211021-IMG_6704.jpg

Words by Pete , Photos by Pete, Butty & Bern

Crew : Pete , Butty , Ballster, El Pres, Bern , PTD , Troll,

Joining us mid ride : Kersh

Route : MC – Teggs – Leathers – Nessit – Standing Stone – Forest Chapel – Narnia – Hardingland – Sutton Hall

Conditions : Distinctly cooler, it threatened rain but we managed to escape the worst

Notes

It was colder this week. 9c with a cool north west breeze.

Yippee for Lidgetts being open again , especially when the Kerridge Bridleway is now fairly muddy.

I could see a hefty shower in the far west by Beeston Castle and the Peckforton Hills .

I hoped we would avoid them , as I had no waterproof.

Paul took charge of the route . Good man. He called it “the three climbs”.

The Zig, the Zag , then at Windy ways we had a debate about the route down from Teggs.

Paul suggested Saddlers…but there was dissent and we took the traditional off piste routes down to the reservoir. But only after retrieving Paul who had a temporary bout of amnesia and was proceeding down Saddlers !

As we rode through Tegg’s the moonrise was spectacular. Hard to do it justice with a mobile phone pic but the crew were trying hard.

20211026-6849dea1-c687-4743-aa46-ee1b4f44a33b.jpg

Up to the Leathers, we were doing a reverse Nessit when a load of e-bikes (almost all trek) passed us .

At Dan’s bench we discover one of the e-boys is Kersh.

20211026-67905dfc-8261-44fd-860b-3f821831e856.jpg

He sees the light and joins the true faith .

Onwards to Climb #3

The Narnia path now has some “anti mtb” installations to prevent uncontrolled hooning, but they don’t impede proceedings too much. It was definitely a slippery descent.

As I waited to let Kersh and PTD pass me on the first section of hardingland I caught a flash of something grey moving low and fast to the left. Badger!

Mr Troll was suffering with iffy lighting, so he had to follow others down.

Just started to rain as we came past bottoms reservoir ….at the pub by 8:45 pm . 15 minutes early.

It was great to stand at the bar again and order fine beer
