TNR 10-11-2022 Funky’s Big Warm Windy One!

20221110-IMG_8348.jpg

words by Alex, photos by Pete

Crew: Funky, El Pres, Slim, Troll, G, Butty, Stunt, Lee

Route: Back Eddisbury, Calrofold Lane, Rainow, Smith Lane, Bank Lane (Cheshire Corkscrew), Jenkin Chapel, Pym Chair, Shrine descent, Errwood Hall, Shooters Clough, Stakeside, Tea Rooms, Stanley Arms, Standing Stone, RHS & LHS tracks, ressies, Leathers Smithy.

Conditions: Warm, Windy, muddy

Notes:

Funky Dunc set’s out a big ride, and on a windy night we are still going high!

Starting on road we have to contend with the back end of commuter traffic through Rainow, with as usual the noisiest motor behind us turning out to be an old corsa with a dodgy exhaust! šŸ˜‰

Once onto smith lane it’s a grind to get the legs warmed up for what is to come.

20221110-IMG_8338.jpg

Regrouping on Bank lane the dark cloudy skies almost appear to be held up by the red lights of Winter Hill and Holme Moss in the distance. Some camera knobbery ensues.

The corkscrew has a shallow layer of slippery mud and pine needles over the wet rocks – top half is trecharous! One day we need to do it on a warm dry night..

20221110-IMG_8342.jpg

Down to the bridge the cobbles are dry and sure, then the long long slog up to Pym chair. The good news is that there is wind assist, welcome even for eButty who is worried he used too much turbo to get to the start on time, and is using the minimum he can bear. No such concerns for eG who whooshes past everyone as he catches up (and gets some gasped comments for his trouble).

All that effort is soon to be rewarded with the LHS of the street down to the gate, and then the track past the Shrine all the way down to the stream. Its mostly dry, the ruts wide enough for pedals, and it’s a great run down šŸ™‚

At the bottom there is some grumbling as some of us have not paid attention to the published route, and Funky is taking us out offroad and into wind!

There is some pushing up shooters clough with only the ebikes and the rigid fortitude making it up properly.

The old coach road however is much better – plenty of grip, not too steep, and if it wasn’t for the headwind it might have been fun!?

20221110-IMG_8347.jpg

On any other November night it would have been biting, but warm air means a windproof is only needed right at the top (if you can get it on without losing it!)

Road descent to the Stanley Arms requires aero and plenty of concentration to avoid being blown off line.

Still time to explore the RHS tracks (post logging apocalypse), enjoying fast stuff down to the road, LHS options before a final blast on tired legs past Bob’s bench and to the cosiness of the Smithy.

Packed with bikers it is – and a much younger crowd too, this is good to see šŸ™‚

Duchars, Neckoil and hot food are hungrily consumed. Dunc and G admit to some little off’s along tonight’s route.

El Pres books us in for the xmas TNR ride dinner, and Ruth arrives to get the whisky in!

Still very breezy on the way home, over 13C still, and Butty’s battery get’s him home on it’s last gasp.

Dunc confirms that total climb for the evening broke the 3000ft barrier – an official Munro night!

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, TJ, Dunc, G, Troll, PTD, Bern, Stunt

Pub: Croxy

Route: RB, Clarke Lane, Endon House Climb, Steps up to top of Kerridge Ridge, Grassy descent and track to Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to the Layby, off road ascent to Dale top, quarries descent, Birchencliff, Stypersons woods, Sugar Lane, road to Cock & Pheasant.

Conditions: Cool & Dry, damp trails.

Notes:

El Pres takes charge with a pre-published route plan and finishing point.

Its clear and cool, winter gloves a must, and extra man points for anyone still sporting bare flesh on their legs!

At the Rainbow bridge rv, Stunt has to do some trailside rear brake repair – rapidly swapping out a “fully sweated asset” RHS pad for another part used (but with some pad still left). “Thorntonesque” is quoted.

PTD (our token eC**t) is running late and we set off confident he will catch us up en route.

Great to see G riding, and properly acoustic!

At the top of Endon House climb PTD has reached us – so El Pres decides we need to push up the steps to the ridge. We are rewarded with good views of the the night time cheshire landscape – and someone getting in early on the fireworks!

20221103-IMG_8197.jpg

Big slithery down the wet grass on the other side, but safely out to the road, through Rainow, past a very dark Robin Hood, and onto Oakenbank, still running fast & fun.

At the bottom of Blaze hill G point out where his chain always breaks on his road bike, is he super strong? – well when he admits it’s the same chain that has broken 3 times…the jury is out!

More road climb to the layby, where PTD goes high to have fun and avoid the big stile, the rest of us grind up with the odd foot down here and there, and the odd sheep skeleton too!

Dale top is a welcome relief after the energy sapping wet grass traction.

20221103-IMG_8201.jpg

The quarry descent is as good as ever (PTD avoids the old finger post trap at the bottom), the lane into Birchencliff is proper filthy muddy and wet – water is definitely coming in higher up than it used to! Mudguards or not backs and bums are now all splattered!

20221103-IMG_8219.jpg

Just time for some last fun in Stypersons – with a 50:50 split between the old skool LHS snicket, and the swoops and jumps in the woods.

Road all the way to the C&P, Atlantic IPA, Wainwrights and Doombar the ales of choice. Portions a bit austere, but banter and chat quality as ever.

AoE averted by the “computer says no” attitude behind the bar.

TNR 27-10-2022 Sawn-off Chumby

20221027-IMG_5858.jpg

Words & Pics by Pete

Crew : Pete , Troll , El Pres , 3 ShedsĀ

Pub : Adrian & BiscuitĀ

Conditions : Strong southerly Wind , mildĀ

Route : Bottom of the Zag, Walker Barn , Cat & Fiddle, Danebower , halfway downĀ  – Cumberland CloughĀ  – Standing StoneĀ  – Nessit Bench – Fire Road descent – Sutton Hall .Ā

Notes:Ā

I arrive at the Zag (Back Eddisbury Lane) to find 3 sheds and El Pres in deep conversation with PTD (on a an ā€œacousticā€  which looks like his E-bike). With a big herd of cows pushed up against the corner of the field where the boys are waiting – must be the charismatic whiff of El Presidente !

Nature notes part 1 : Bats very visible in the dusk light as we wait for the Troll to arrive.

PTD disappears off home – he was only being sociable on his homeward journey from work

At the top of the Zag 3 sheds suggests tarmac to Cat & Fiddle – so off we go . We spread out on the ascent , and its a fair old southerly headwind we have to push against.Ā

20221102-SawnOffChumby.jpg

No hanging about at the Cat, we are straight over and heading for Danebower . Its ages since we took the ā€œfootpathā€ route down to the waterfall (this means turning right level with the peak of Whetstone Ridge, and roughly taking the line of the footpath down) . The first half is OK , as I can just about remember what’s coming surface wise . But after we cross the brook it gets a bit harder to follow – the two Phils manage to ride it all the way down , El Pres and I ending up pushing some bits . ā€œA man has got to know his limitationsā€ (quoth Clint E) .

We reach the waterfall without mishap , and discover a reliably entertaining chumby descent with a distinctly wet bit in the middle.

Nature notes part 2 : Frogs enjoying the mild and damp air as we climb to standing stone

A quick whizz to the benches and then a fast fire road descent to food and beer.

The Sutton Hall is unusually quiet ,but looking good for a minor refurb , and , after confirming we are OK to order food (its is only 8:30pm after all !) , we take up residence at one of the new sets of ā€œhighā€  tables and chairs – a good foot higher than the previous set-up. May I  just say I quite like these . Let us just not mention the very ā€œun ecoā€ gas powered fire pits in the courtyard . Glad I am not paying that fuel bill !

Wojtek beer at 5.5% and under £5 a pint is popular ! But I have to admit to straying to a pint of 6.7% lupaloid before the inevitable AofE

20221027-IMG_5867.jpg

And….pudding indulgence for some !

TNR 20-10-2022 The Mega Teggs

Words and pics by Pete

20221020-IMG_5645.jpg

Crew : Pete , PTD , Acoustic Butty , Troll (on time and at the right place) and DuncĀ

Conditions : mild , about 11 or 12c . Thankfully it had stopped raining late afternoon. Mud has officially returned.

Route : Bolly maze – Grimshaw lane – Chancery – Lord St – Poacher’s Snicket – Oakenbank- Calrofold Lane-Cliff Lane-back Eddisbury-Zag ascent – The Mega Teggs bit -Back eddisbury- Cliff – Calrofold again – Lidgetts- Kerridge bridleway- full length – Ingersley Vale – Poacher’s Snicket (again) .Ā

A mixture of good off road and quiet lanes .

20221020-IMG_5635.jpg

Notes:Ā

The first of this evening’s themes is ā€œcollect riders en routeā€ – Paul at the top of Poacher’s snicket .

Dunc rendezvoused with us (having come up over Lidgetts) as we reached Calrofold. Like he was telepathic.

Calrofold is officially turning back into a bridleway ?. And we like it all the more for that.

Buxton New Rd is (conversely) now resurfaced and re road marked at the point we cross to Back Eddisbury. About time too, it looks really good.Ā

20221020-IMG_5636.jpg

Up to zag, which was thankfully not running with water. The boredom of the climb was broken by a massive piece of fallen tree spanning almost the entire width of the track .

Just enough space to squeeze by on the right hand side .

At the top we rested and had a discussion . Slack or not , quick pint somewhere mid ride?

Sense prevailed , and what started off as Pete’s route idea was now passed to Paul.

He took the helm and the we were given the ā€œMega Teggsā€ :

Brief grassy climb to the arty sheepfold shelter thing at Teggs Nose summit.Ā

20221020-IMG_5650.jpg

Then short techie descent bits Westward until we reached ā€œThe Langley gateā€ , where we looped right across the grassy slope back to the  tarmac/gravel ā€œrear entranceā€ route into Teggs – something I don’t recall ever descending in all my years of riding in this area – just brilliant .

Why don’t we do this more often ?

Then we retrace our route back the ought the lanes to Rainow , and across a muddy and slippery kerridge bridleway!Ā

20221020-IMG_5654.jpg

The poacher’s is packed and it’s very warm – our table is reserved though . As they are very busy its a

long wait for food – Phil negotiates a plate of table chips starter – which (the cheek of it ! ) is first delivered to the WNB table .

20221020-IMG_5657.jpg

With Dunc in attendance the ribaldry flowed freely …and that’s about all I can recall of tonight’s episode in The Poachers.

TNR 13-10-2022 Close encounters of the 4 legged kind

20221013-IMG_8072.jpg

Crew: El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Troll, Butty, Dunc, Bern, Stunt

Pub: TJ

Route: RB, Endon House Climb, back of Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale Road, Sponds, Dale Top, quarries descent, Birchencliffe, Long Lane, Poachers

Conditions: Still, clear, mild & dry.

Notes: A fine autumn day leads to a fine evening weatherwise, so a route to go high with a view to a Bolly finish is floated by Stunt.

We actually manage to assemble and set off within tolerance, Butty meeting us at the Canal with instructions to pass the oncoming horse slowly. We do our duty and are thanked by the rider :-). Despite being officially after sunset, there is still plenty of light above, albeit pretty dark under the trees past Endon House on the washed out old road. At the start of Kerridge the hills to the East are still gently lit, houses and cars lights stand out as brighter spots, and the first star (planet?) is out low in the sky.

A couple of dog walkers flag that there are some young cattle on the track to Rainow, and once down the steep snicket there are four of them blocking the path, and wandering up to the gate ahead of us. They are a bit skittish, so lights off, and gently past , they then skidaddle back the way we came.

After all this excitement we realise we are two riders down, El Pres and Bern. No answer on the phone, and we glimpse rear lights further along Kerridge – they must have gone straight on…and Pete then says they will have issues at Waulkmill wood with a big tree down (they did). We trust in live location, and an obvious RV at the end of Oakenbank.

Which is where we now head, stopping at the crest to admire a beautifully sillouhetted White Nancy against a red sky. Rapid descent and regroup at the start of Blaze hill, and lo El Pres and Bern appear climbing up from the Poachers.

Across to Pott Shrigley through some cold air pockets, before the long road climb up to the Gristone trail beyond Brink farm. Still mild at the gate, and some yorkshire spelling emerging on the roadsign beyond “Oncoming Traffic in middl o roa ” šŸ˜‰

Dry and grippy all the way past the 1975 stone, and an amazing orange 3/4 moon rises to our right.

20221013-IMG_8073.jpg

The “Iceberg” of paper waste has all gone, but we finally get a chilly breeze at the trig point on Sponds. Admire the views across the plain to Winter Hill, and across the peaks to Holme Moss.

Across the down and ups to Dale Top, with a few sheep deciding to move out of our way, we realise again that we are two down (careless!). This time it’s Pete and Bern (Camera’s are touted as the reason), and we see two lights descending and coming in our direction.

The quarry descent is rocky and fast, with potentially hazardous fast moving mutton missiles on the final stretch to moorside lane (luckily none come too close in the end).

A full e motorbike follows some of us down sparking some eC***ery grumblings.

Birchencliffe properly wet again for the first time since last winter – which is a bit of a shock (especially for those without mudguards!)

Just time for the final leg to Long Lane and the short climb up green lane for the even shorter descent on Beeston Brow and into Bolly.

Poachers quite busy, special Pie the right choice (for those lucky enough to get the last 2 slices), pub margin on the Inception must be good (£7 a pint!!), with the Wincle Bengal Buttress a bargin at £4.

20221013-IMG_8080.jpg

TJ arrived with tales of employment and plans for overwintering in the Alps, and a cunning plan for a Poynton based ride in a couple of weeks.

Air temp on the way home not too bad – summer gloves still acceptable!

TNR 6-10-2022 Forest Classics

20221006-IMG_5295.jpg

Crew: Bern, El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Troll, Butty, Doog, Dunc, Stunt

Route: MC, Zig, Teggs, Leathers & Witches cottage, Charity, Extension, Nessit, Ressies, Redwillow, 5 Clouds

Conditions: Mild, Dry, Breezy

Notes:

Bern takes charge after a few weeks away from the collective, suggesting a simple formula of forest with a pub & pizza finish.

It tempts a decent crew, enjoying dry and mild weather in the fading light, and getting mirth going almost immediatley with tales of canine excrement from our guide dog puppy walking leader.

Bern’s route misses the Zag, so Pete who is waiting there, is fetched by a volunteer whilst the main group head up to Teggs from the broken road to murder farm (also still technically Teggs nose lane).

Full lights needed for a fast and loose descent (minding the two walkers near the bottom) a hint of slither on the traverse to the track to the car park, and bats flitting in the dusky gloom.

A long climb from a very low bottoms ressie all the way past the Leathers up the road, onto the track, past witches cottage and up to Hacked way lane (for a breather), up the steep tarmac to the start of Charity proper.

Chazza damp but not as wet as you would have thought, the extension strewn with baby’s head rocks, and no Bern gravel dancing this week šŸ˜‰

A final section up to standing stone, across to Nessit and down the descent and round the ressies gives us a respectable >2000ft of climb for the evening, and a hankering for the pub.

The Leathers has shiny new signage and lights (although no marks for the sparky who has left wires running across upstairs windows!)

The bike security debate spurns the presidential offer of the secure bike shed of mum’s flat, and we opt for lots of locks in sight of our table. The redwillow beer is good, but the attitude less so as the pizza oven has been switched off, and they are not keen on us bringing in takeaway! to make matters worse last orders is called at 9:30!!!

20221006-IMG_5298.jpg

Ops leader Bern bails deciding he has to drive to Brum to get cheap building supplies (cue deep discussion with the Troll on local options) The president takes charge, orders Pappa Johns, and we prep for a divert to 5 Clouds and mix with the late urban cosmopolitan crowd. Ruth arrives in the van to give a Pizza assist, and all is well. Tis a bit chilly and windy al fresco, but once the food is consumed we get an inside table and enjoy warmth, mirth on the habits of plasterers “not quite housetrained, and only an inch above orangutangs!”, and bish bash bosh, board & skim, Loaaads of monnney! šŸ™‚

20221006-IMG_5297.jpg

Apparently the state of their radios is a whole other conversation!

Well some of the best nights are when the plan needs to evolve, and tonight was definitely one of those nights -even if 10:22pm may rank as the latest we have eaten in a very long time.

Proper pudding stout at 12% meant 1/3 was the right answer.

TNR 29-9-2022 Edging on Slack

20220929-IMG_7853.jpg

Crew: Slim, El Pres, PTD, Butty, TJ, 3 Sheds, Dr S, Stunt

Route: Riverside Park, Bollin track to Prestbury, Chelford Road, Finlow Hill lane, Bradford lane, Hocker Lane (with Alderley Park mini loop), Slade Lane, Finlow Hill again, Spooky woods both sides of Artists lane and out at the Owl, Wizard, Beacon, back through Prestbury, Prestbury lane after crossing the railway, Flash lane, Cock & Pheasant.

Conditions: Cool, damp, a bit muddy

Notes:

Birthday boy Pete gets to choose the route so off to the back lanes around the Edge we go!.

After an unexpected heavy shower as folk are preparing, we follow the rainbow to the start of the ride. The sun is low, and the pink tinged clouds reflect in the water of the Bollin as we dodge the last of the daylight dog walkers (and the odd cloud of bugs).

Gents barbershop still doing haircuts for the afterwork crowd as we emerge from Bridge Green, lights definitely needed for the climb up Chelford road (which warms those who were claiming it was a chilly start).

At the start of Finlow Hill lane a whole pile of wooden fruit boxes have been fly tipped – which is suprising as you would have thought nice wood like that would be being flogged as firewood!

Sliver of moon above the treetops, bats fluttering, the odd owl calling, and the descent of Bradford is proper muddy and slippy with a green tinged set of cobbles to finish with.

The AP diversion is always worth doing, before carrying on back up Hocker, then onto Slade with good views across the plain early on.

A second traverse of Finlow Hill lane, but this time follow Right back to the main road, then a sharp Left into the trees, and the muddy singletrack across to Artists lane, a couple of patches of spooky mist adding to the atmosphere.

20220929-IMG_7843.jpg

The former commuters lead us through Windmill wood, and near the bottom Butty leads us Left to the sandy field – avoiding the swampy bit. We discover that the bottom right corner is the correct way out (having crossed a big ditch to exit on the top right). A final spin up to the Wizard (soon to be a house??) and then out to the Beacon for celebratory pie & whisky.

20220929-IMG_7847.jpg

With a hard stop for our table booking, it’s route one to the pub with the road to Prestbury giving us the cool then warm layers of air up and down the dips! A friendly reception at the Cock and Pheasant where we are well looked after. Atlantic ale, wainwrights and some cider!!

Plenty of catching up and bant’s with a cheeky final dram for the mini AoE.

TNR 22-9-2022 Slack n Wet

20220922-IMG_4936.jpg

Crew: Pete, Dunc, Stunt

Route: Gleave Av, Bulls Head, Redway Lane, Under Nancy, back of Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank, Spuley Lane, Shrigely Road, Long Lane, Green Lane, Beeston Brow, Poachers.

Conditions: Wet to Gleave Avenue, then simply wet trails, mild.

Notes:

The proper rain from 3:30 led to lots of excuses, so only the determined three made the rv at Austin Heights to inspect the progress of the build (watertight next week if the windows arrive!), views from the front will be excellent, and whilst naming all the lumps in view we realise it has stopped raining!

Dunc has done another silly wednesday night fell race this week, a loop from Castleton, past Peveril Castle, over Mam Tor, along the ride to Hope and back to Castleton. His knee is complaining, so a slack ride is declared.

Wet grass, slippy roots and a touch of mud maketh back of Kerridge more than a contour traverse (no sign of Dunc’s light from last week either).

Lights are on although it’s not that dark, and at the end of Oakenbank the knee feels up to extending the ride with a road loop out to Long Lane, some nice stonework facing the mega lego on the Bakestonedale road corner house.

A Tawny owl is hooting on green lane (Pete slows to spot it) and a quick slither down Beeston mount it’s into the Poachers for 8:15.

Curry’s all round – cali & chickpea very flavoursome, the Thai green quite spicy!

Nick from the Nancy’s arrives – and we find they are only 2 tonight – TNR win again!

Great table service from Louis and the team, by the time we need to pay up, Dunc has broken his 2 pint promise (but only by 1) whereas the rest of us are north of 4 (with a whisky).

20220922-IMG_4942.jpg

Next week proper riding!

TNR 15-09-2022 a change of plan

words & photo by Pete

Crew : Butty, Croxy, Pete, 3 Sheds , DuncĀ

Route : Back Eddisbury Lane meet-up and a Forest circuit, finishing at the LeathersĀ

Notes :Ā

Croxy had a plan for a post ride al fresco pizza and beer – to be delivered to Teggs as we finished our ride.

Alas . It didn’t happen . Despite teeing them up the previous night, and sorting out all our Pizza choices as we paused at the top of the Zag , when he rang up they could not do it – driver shortage !

So …The Leathers was an excellent Plan B, and they did not let us down !

But by the time of this change of plan ….Butty was almost at the cat and had brought his own beer .

As we gathered at the top end of charity the view to the West was lit by the setting sun sending fantastic shafts through the cloud. 7:26pm Sunset …..the autumn is drawing nearĀ

Late afternoon sunlight and sky scape over the Cheshire plain 20220915-IMG_4781-Pano.jpg

John dropped his water bottle on charity, and I , as back marker , had already collected it before I got his call.

I dropped my tyre pressures a bit too much for chazza . At forest chapel I had to dig out my pump and add some to my rear tyre . Much to the amusement of the crew.

Quite a few out and about in the forest. That cheeky left hand route off the downhill course was very good, especially the less steep bits .

Brilliant light post sunset ? as we snaked our way down through the trees .

Fine quaffing at the Leathers : Landlord, Neck Oil and some ā€œRed Beerā€ .

Cold descent from the Leathers. Glad to have my down jacket to don . 9.3c at midnight

TNR 08-09-2022 The Queen is dead

20220908-IMG_4608.jpg

Words by Pete , pics by Butty & PeteĀ

Crew : Butty, Kersh, Pete, Dunc, PTD Ā

Route : RB , War memorial,Ā  Lidgetts, Half Kerridge bridleway, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Moorside La,Ā  The Chapel, Long Lane,Ā  Stypersons, Towpath,PoachersĀ

Weather : Slightly damp under the tyres , but it stayed dry after the pre-ride deluge. Mild and autumnalĀ

Notes :Ā

A small crew on a smallish circuit , but the rain had stopped just before 6pm and we were all glad to be out.

Kersh finally made a ride, and Paul was on a 4 day week so a relaxed vibe was set for the evening.

By the end of Hedge Row on Spuley Lane Dunc suddenly stopped and was muttering expletives , he had somehow managed to lose his Exposure rear light ..so he turned tail and retraced his steps hoping to find it.

The rest of us headed onward to the Brickworks , and then a visit to The Chapel .Ā

20220912-419cb71c-b66b-4ba0-afa6-c87f5d46d37d.jpg

(As we passed through Pott Shrigley we marvelled at the enormous bit of groundwork going on in the corner property – giant concrete lego bricks !!)

Fortunately we had no ā€œTJ-type-offsā€ on the stream crossing en route to the Chapel , and in the fading light we headed off to Long Lane . Bugger all traffic makes this lane a good route back .

20220908-IMG_4606.jpg

We had reached the top of Stypersons Wood on long lane. As we drew closer I clocked two sets of bike lights and realised that Kersh had met up with Dunc again .

ā€œBad news boys: the Queen is deadā€ .

And in the Poachers we raised our glasses to our departed Queen and to King Charles the third. Paul led the toast. We got the big table (normally reserved for the WNBs) , although we were only four.

20220908-IMG_4622.jpg

2022 Inflation hits big . After economical Dortmunder lagers, Paul breaks ranks and a 6.2% Deya IPA is ordered . Ā£7 …ouch. One in , all in…..and then to Whisky .
