Notes;
Despite a slightly ominous weather forecast the evening turned out to be just perfect, the route making the most of the spectacular sunset views over Manchester

A small peleton set off for the quick blast along the Middlewood Way to Adlington heading for the West Gate entrance to Lyme Park. Social conscience and a sense of citizenship kept us on the straight and narrow through the park and out of the East Gate. In the park we stopped for the first of a number of photoshoots, the output of which fully justified the delay. It was in fact an evening for savouring the sunset and the views rather than pulling one’s …. out. We all wanted to buy a copy of one of Pete’s photos, but it was two deer.

From TNR 10-04-2014 Northern Classic

We lost the sun on the climb up to Bowstones. The removal of the gravel heap at the top left some serious tractor ruts which caused a little comedy peddling and the use of profanities.

A trig point photoshoot was obligatory before returning to the bikes for a superb descent over Dale Top and down to Keepers Cottage. The gentle timing left us in a bit of a panic and a route grande direct was required to get to the Vale before the Chef threw another tantrum. 3 sheds was the first casualty of the evening, retiring hurt before the pub after being run over by his brother in law’s trials bike earlier in the week. On arrival all was well as the place was still in full swing following a brewery tour. The evening concluded as expected !

TNR 27-3-2014 Precision Precipitation

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Mr I, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: G

Route: BL, Old Road, Bridleway Zag, Walker Barn, Chazza, Narnia, Hardingland, Smithy, Rezzies, White Rabbit Ascent, Nessit, KM descent, trails & rezzies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Steady precipitation, very wet trails, big puddles (so last weeks prediction sadly true)

Stats: Double rear light loss for PTD

Notes:

No matter how much you analyse the blue and green blobs moving across the country on the rainfall radar timelapse it doesn’t change the fact that its going to be wet for the ride! In fact the only question is how much and for how long(that will be plenty, and the whole ride then!)…Donning waterproofs (green is in!) those who had declared their riding hand all met as planned at BL, but conditions washed away any enthusiasm for The Big Ride to Backforest – to be replaced with more familiar forest trails and options as we go.

Checking El Pres has approved new head protection (nice Blue lid) and PTD specced DH minion on the front (tick) we get cracking .

Turning onto Old Road the tarmac is literally awash with water, and there is a decent stream flowing along the edge of the road! Not bothering with what will clearly be a mud puddle of a Zig, we slog up to the better drained Zag. Strangely visibility is good, and its not feeling properly dark yet (next week it will be light!!!). Warm now we all settle into our individual rythms on the climbs – Mr I off in the distance as usual 🙂

Chazza very wet as expected, and occasional mist patches add excitement, at the mudfest narnia gate there is at least some dry ground under the fir trees, which come in handy as PTD heads back up to find the important bit of his rear light, and El Pres walks up to help too. Much stamping of feet and flapping of arms only partially wards off cold fingers and toes inside our now truly wet gear. Light recovered its time for El Pres to face his nemesis on a speedy (to get warm) dash down Narnia (more mist pockets). No incidents this week (but someone has been busy with the dead trees across the lines either side of the step sections).

More motorway madness!!!! the tracks from witches cottage to Hardingland and Charity both smooth fireroad, who thinks this will make mountian bikers happy???? Well the rain is already beginning its erosive entropy magic..be great again in a couple of years hey.

Dunc sets new strava segment record as a result on the way to Hardingland, which is fast and bumpy, only to cross the stream to find PTD and Pres playing the find the light game again!! ..which they do, but PTD is banned from refitting it and instead its placed behind secure mesh on the camelback (sorted!)

Route decision now taken to ensure no pub slackery at the bottom, big puddles on the teggs nose trail, respect to the scouts hiking in the rain on the way to the smithy, and chase the fell runner around the rezzies (bike win on the flat, fell runners overtake you again on the climbs!)

More aggregate aggravation on the white rabbit ascent with fresh lumpy stuff most of the way up…man what a drag! Rain now hail, and topping nessit there is a hint of snow on the ground. Cursing the lack of any restorative spirit (but inspiring Mr I to introduce us to Whisky Macs later) its time to wipe the glasses and aim downhill.

Fast and furious fun all the way back, heads down to Sutton Hall, and as we park the bikes the rain stops!

Whisky Macs (Ginger wine + spirit)  instantly warming, new leather chairs are very inviting (although occupied), and Dunc orders tea.

Einstein fantastic (although in limited supply) refreshes the parts other beers cannot reach and the conversation gets very academic and lofty! Cameo from G, and epic failure to ride from Slim. Our tactic of handing wet gloves and buffs by the fire fails to shift the chair people, so we stay at the table and are entertained by peoplewatching instead 😉 Somehow its late and there is no option but to don wet gear and ride hard for home.

Still a good ride 🙂

Route: BL, full Zig zags, Walker Barn, Chazza, Narnia, Smithy

Conditions: Suprisingly mild and dry, Wet for Duncan, cold later

From TNR 20-03-2014 All the Presidents Men

Stats: 1 chain faff (G), 1 off El Pres

Notes:

Always a good start to a ride when the actual weather is better than forecast, and with the Spring Equinox only a day away, the light is still dusky.

This weeks fad appears to be MudHuggers for those of the Orange persuasion (no not a TOWIE joke!)

As usual its a Paul Plan for the route, with a chazza start and talk of the two sided valley, also familiar is the rapid route alternations suggested by G….whilst they are debate options the rest of us set off up the road after a quick comms to the newly back on the bike Slim 🙂

The change in the season prompts some de-layering at the top of the zig zags, before rapid cooling down to walker barn.

El Pres is uncharateristically up the tarmac to chazza like a rocket and when we catch him he tells tales of big beasts in the trees. We think he has smelt beer (or did he have a swift half stashed up there!?)

Chazza is damped down from last weeks dryness, but not slippery, however G manages to slip his chain on the roloff, and Stunt’s lock shakes loose. Regrouping (but leaving G to catch us up) at Narnia it’s a speedy descent, alternative lines to steps are flowy (if slippy) but the bottom gravel section is dry fast and loose….

A gravel off has a swooshy kind of sound that turns heads – red light on the ground, bike down, quick mental count – it’s El Pres!

He speaks up but isn’t getting straight up, so it’s clearly been more than a dab.

TNR CSI quickly establish that a) handlebars are now out of kilter, b) rear light is detached from bike (but working) c) the back of his helmet is badly cracked!Andy S does triage , whilst we check & straighten bike. Nothing of any immediate concern us but protective of our pres we decide to escort him to the pub to monitor him for an hour or two.

From TNR 20-03-2014 All the Presidents Men

The homely fire in the smithy, plus the wonderfully understanding Carol make it the right decision. Still protesting that he’s fine he talks up a soft drink to a shandy ;-). We settle with table whitebait (no prizes for guessing who ordered that!)  when Carol spots flashing lights on yonder hill – which turns out to be Slim attempting to signal G-A-M-M-O-N in “more sauce” code.

Rabbit pie also highly recommended, XPA flowing nicely, and a warm spot by the fire for a rather bedragged Dunc when he arrives.

Talk of an early bath (literally) for El Pres -who by now has worked out that he must have landed sort of upside down on his elbow, hip and shoulder having gone over the bars..and hence the back of his head then hitting the ground last, is nursing some aches and pains (road rash and brusing foreacast) Butty helpfully suggests the comic book remedy of raw meat on the afflicted area (politely declined ;-)).

The early bath spurned we finally prise ourselves out into a cold night, and El Pres is safely delivered home before the witching hour.

Winter officially over! and only one more ride starting with lights before the clocks change…so that will be snow next week then 😉

Mad Axe Men: PTD, G, Butty, El Pres, Stunt

Also Riding: 3 Sheds, Croxy

Pub: Slim, Lee

Route: BL, New Road, Chazza, Extension, Cat, Axe Edge, Cross the Moor to Haws 3 Shires, Cut Thorne, Chumby, Standing Stone, Singletrack by the Shutlingsloe gate, Kirsten Munt descent, singletrack & rezzies, Sutton Hall (B riders did Danebower hollow & Chumby)

Conditions: Clear skies, almost no wind, dry trails and pockets of cold air (thick fog in Macc post pub)

Stats: PTD punctures again

Notes:

The weather comes good for PTD’s ambitious plan for Axe Edge…and for Croxy to ride 😉

Butty arrives with Green Blood and Stunt with Red Face, Butty because rebuilding a bike is easier than replacing bearings in a hope hub!?, Stunt because he was in a rush to make it.

Kershaw rules are applied

Decision to do Chazza to break up the climb and give anyone who wanted a gentler pace to the Cat suits all, but the 8 minute (according to G) difference extends to nearer 15 as PTD punctures yet again on chazza (more air pressure maybe?). However he dazzles us with his slick tyre changing technique.

Extension very skittery – and dry rocks are the theme of the night.

Regroup at the Cat, only to diverge into A (for Axe) and B (for daneBower) teams

A team blast down the road and then onto the moor – in time to see B team lights coming across Danebower.

Dry fast dusty and loose, El Pres has a dab but survives! 3 Shires is reached very rapidly. Majority decision to avoid the muddy field, so a dry and skitterish Cut Thorne is a decent challenge (apart from G & PTD who give it a very good go!). Setting the dogs off at the top, and steaming profusely its on and up to Chumby.

The big hole on Chumby is even bigger! and a strange muddy stripe all along the right hand side from below the gate.

Tired tired legs up to standing stone, and a final fling around the forest to enjoy fun singletrack and descents.

Sutton Hall by 9:30 hundred hours a spiffing good effort (not sure the rest of the clientele were as impressed with our aroma)

Oracle & Lucan for the masses, a dodgy Leffe would stike down butty the next day, and then some fresh clothing & hearty meals. Welcome appearances from Slim (on the mend) and Lee. Dan Bike stickers issued!

Foggy rides home

Crew;
A Route – El Pres, PtD, Butty, Stunt, Coley, Mr. I, Lee, 3 Sheds, Steve, Gee, Eric
B Route – Dunc,

Lame excuses; Slim, still a pain in the neck
Route A; Bollin Valley, Prestbury, Over Alderley, Under Alderley, Prestbury, Legh Arms
Route B; Bollin Valley, Mottram Hall, Hunters Pool, Legh Arms
Conditions; Dry above but rather muddy below!
Stats; None reported

Offs – Coley
Notes;
Despite slight confusion a large peloton assembled at the head of the Bollin Valley Way for a northbound trip. Once off the hardpack track we we’re slithering around in the mud; at least is it was posh Prestbury mud but that didn’t stop Steve bemoaning the defiling of his new oddly sized wheel machine. The temptation to call it a day at the Legh Arms “first pass” was avoided and the field strung out up Chelford Road. It strung out so much that a breakaway group of anarchists rejected Stunt’s leadership and headed off into the darkness.
The Stunted group (ouch) continued around the bridleways to the west, climbing back up Artists Lane. Further frolics and a stiff climb up Swiss Hill brought the two groups back together but not before Coley had fallen off and twisted his knee. The rendezvous was perfectly timed as Gee was just breaking out the baby Guinness and Butty his brake fluid special.
It may have been something to do with satellite misalignment or local happenings more akin to middle earth but 3 Shed’s NASA spec electric map couldn’t quite decide which way was home; so we resorted to the old fashioned approach and followed PtD down the nearest steep bit.
On the ride back to the Legh Arms the general view was that the location is great when it’s dry or frozen – neither of which has happened much this year, so we’ll have to try again next year.
In the Legh we were welcomed with Unicorn at a very reasonable price and Peroni at an outrageous price before the conversation turned to Chinese business etiquette.

TNR 27-02-2014 Croker Hill – For Dan

From Dan

Crew;
A Route – El Pres, El Pud, Dr Simon, PtD, Butty, Stunt, Coley, Mr. I, Lee, Belgian Andy, Eric
B Route – Gee
C Route- Dunc, Big Nick

Lame excuses; Slim, pain in the neck
Route A; Zig but no zag, Teggs L and R options, reservoir, Smithy, up round the back of the reservoir , road past the Hanging Gate to A54, climb to Croker, Dan’s descent to the Ryles Arms – “Marvellous”.
Route B; Kershaw Towers to Croker Hill – route grande direct et grande vitesse
Route C; Tytherington to Ryles Arms – route grande direct deux.
Conditions; Dry – a real tonic!
Stats; Stunt, Puncture

Offs – Dr Simon
Notes;
After Dan’s funeral this week it was only fitting that we should go to Croker Hill, and enjoy a substantial gin and tonic. It was also great to be joined by Lee and Andy, Dan’s “other” riding buddies.
A large peloton tonight – but that was just fine !
Teggs was first up with the party split left and right. Dr Simon visited Thornton’s hollow on the left hand option but with a slightly less spectacular outcome, managing to climb out of the bush unaided. The route from the forest to the Hanging Gate didn’t seem as steep as last week with the legs still relatively fresh. On along the ridge, before the climb up to Croker. Any heat gained on the ascent was very rapidly lost in the biting wind on the summit, but it was the summit where we wanted to be.
PtD produced a fine bottle of Hendricks whilst the tonic mules unloaded their packs. Lime and lemon appeared as did some rich cake from El Pud who was making a rare but welcome Thursday appearance.
As we raised our glasses the sky was crystal clear with a wonderful view of Orion – “if you’re up there Dan………..”
The fabulous grassy undulations of Dan’s descent lay ahead and as the libation kicked in more than one rider described a sense of man and machine in perfect harmony – well nobody properly fell off.

We were welcomed by Black Sheep at the Ryles Arms. Unfortunately Stunt’s arrival was also greeted by a puncture, common sense overcoming the inclination to pump it up and see how it goes. There was much talk of a lasting memorial to Dan and it’s always the sign of a good night when the staff are in their coats before us, and the lights go off as we leave.

TNR 20-02-2014 3 Shires out and back

Words by Eric
Crew;
A Route – Stunt, Coley, Dunc, Mr. I, Eric
B Route – Slim, Butty

Lame excuses; None submitted but I guess some went off for a sneaky half term hol !
Route A; Main road to Charity, Extension, Wildboarclough, nasty climb to the A54, down towards Cut Thorne and rocky rear entry to 3 Shires. Retrace route to A54, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, original Nessit, lanes to the Hanging Gate.
Route B; ………….Hanging Gate
Conditions; Whilst there was no ice, it’s still winter!
Stats; Minimal for the size of the peloton
Offs – None
Big nearlies –Coley, Mr I and Eric
Notes;
There was an appetite for 3 Shires but not for the traditional muddy field. A tactical in and out by the rear entry was agreed and a small peloton set off up Buxton Road at a brisk pace, following Mr I who was rapidly vanishing into the distance. Charity and the extension were tackled without incident but with the pace ever quickening. Things slowed a little on the long grind up to the A54 and on up to Cut Thorne.
The sandy and rocky descent to 3 Shires has been “improved” in recent years by the addition of loads of rocks “t’t size o’ babies ‘eds”. Duncan arrived at the bottom praising his big wheels but cursing his solid forks – you win some you lose some boy.
Coley provided a welcome snifter of something Speyside which was accompanied by Eric and Friends biscuits; provided by guess who?
There were no clean sheets on the climb back out over the babies heads but at least we were warm. The major excitement of the evening was provided on the next section by a relatively innocuous looking large pool of muddy water which was akin to the one in the Vicar of Dibly. Coley and Mr I were nearly victims before Eric managed a fine handstand on the bars, staring doom down the vertical treads of a Maxxis.
There were complaints of tired legs as we climbed to Standing Stone, especially from the heroes of two big rides in one week. No respite, on over Nessit and down past the ghostly white rabbit and one final climb to the Hanging Gate and into Luda’s warm hospitality where Butty and Slim had already started.

The Hanging Gate was a fitting and poignant end to the ride as it was a favourite of Dan’s. The first toast was “Dan”, as we know it will always be; and the conversation turned easily to warm memories. Food selections varied from “all day breakfast – you can have salad with it too” to rabbit pie followed by puddings laden with innuendo.

Crew; It doesn’t matter

Lame excuses; None.

Route; It doesn’t matter

Conditions; Nobody noticed.

Stats; None recorded

Notes;
Everyone was coming to terms with the terrible news of the death of Big Dan earlier in the day.
Some folks decided to join together and ride, others met later, and some dealt with their thoughts alone.
Familiar trails were ridden but most people peddled quietly enveloped in their own thoughts of Dan.
Others joined the riders later where the conversation turned to Big Dan. Whether you rode, joined later or reflected quietly alone the world has lost one of it’s truly good people.

Dan Barlow 1981-2014

From Dan

If a man’s wealth is measured in the happiness he creates in his friends and family, then Dan was a millionaire many times over.

Thursday was a very difficult day for the TNR crew. I never dreamed that we might end up toasting the memory of Dan Barlow with G and T on a dark and cold night in February 2014.

But it was fitting.

For it was in Macc Forest that we “found” Dan on the 25th October 2007 as he was out solo riding. Our own Mowgli.

That chance encounter was a blessing from above. I have never known a more enthusiastic and warm person. He had such a zest for all aspects of life.

From Dan

It has been a honour to ride with him, from our humble Thursday night gatherings to the big events like Mayhem and the South Downs Way. So many shared laughs over the post ride pints.
When it comes to mountain bike “know how”, Dan was our guru. A walking Encyclopaedia of all things two wheeled. And he shared that knowledge so freely.

Our hearts go out to Katie and their two daughters, Isobel and Holly , as well as their wider family.
