TNR 12-11-20 Tythy Twosome Get Dirty off Shining Tor

Legal exercise pairing: Dunc & Stunt

Route: Tythy, Cliff Lane, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, RH track to Hoolihey Lane, Lamaload, RH climb to double track, Oakenbank, Poachers Snicket, Lord St, Farm track to Canal, Rainbow Bridge, Tythy

Conditions: Mild, breezy, wet and boggy away from the main trails.

Notes:

An impromptu plan to go high and do something different hatched before looking outside and seeing the wind picking up. We do it anyway.

Last minute faffing includes Stunts swapping boots due to a loose cleat, and Dunc “getting it all together”.

We opt for the direct Cliff lane route, and get overtaken on the up by a skinny runner! (although it’s been resurfaced!!)

More resurfacing of sections of the main road to the cat, although depsite signage saying it’s closed, it was open. Very quiet though as most traffic was taking the bottom of the oven shortcut.

Pairs move fast, but sometimes muscles are not used to the lack of stops..Stunt needs to stretch out a hamstring at the tea rooms.

The shining tor climb is back to the momentum sucking soft patches, and the bog of doom at the top..we wonder about the route choice, but carry on regardless.

Top of the trail across the boggy hills is sloppy slidy silliness, but it does improve as the slopes steepen, and overall its a lot more ridable than we fear. Although its very unpredictable about which soft spot will eat a wheel, and which will ride over easily!

We manage to not get lost either, and after the stone gateposts (with no gate or fence) we know the climb is over.

A big logging machine is working near Hoolihey lane, serious overtime!

The grassy descent is marginal on grip and we both have sideways moments, and luckily we did remember there is a fence halfway down!

We contour over the field rather than follow the trail down by the stream, and it’s a good choice!

Lamaload slighly spooky and the undisturbed layer of pine needles suggests no walkers or riders for a few days. On a night where we have no fear of climb, we opt for the prettier route to Rainow by going right of the water works, and pushing up a bit to get to the double track. Bonus of this route is that we avoid the road climb up through Rainow.

Oakenbank superfast, and we keep to our there of avoiding the tarmac as much as possible and swing down the Poachers snicket, and Kerridgeish, to the Canal and Rainbow bridge.

Tired legs from the lack of stops, but a great ride!

Respect to TJ and Lee for doing a 40+ mile ride to leek and back during the day!

TNR 5-11-2020 Lockdown Eve

Words by Alex, pics by Pete & Butty

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Stunt

Route: Stonyfold lane, Zig, Teggs, White Rabbit ascent, Nessit, Ferriser, Campfire spot.

Conditions: Still, Mild

Notes:

A final TNR before lockdown 2.0 reduces groups to 2.0!

With a favourable weather window, TJ suggests a campfire evening, and together with Slim, they get in the essential logistics (beer and wood) ahead of the ride.

We gather and compare our hefty packs (still with own supplies, extra clothing and dry wood), and it’s a no brainer that we will do a “minimum viable product” to get to the campfire spot.

Butty then adds in a critical parameter of dry backside, and Charity lane is struck from the list of options!

IMG_7960

We head up with sporadic fireworks visible over the lights of macc and its surrounds. An early Badger runs across the path by Teggs gate in the lights of the lead riders.

Strange sounds..bongo drums and jungle beats rise up from Langley as we contemplate the Teggs descent..all a bit surreal!

All is revealed as the big marquee at the back of the Leathers has been hosting a lockdown eve event of it’s own!

IMG_7931

Lots of lights visible in the forest, and plenty of other riding groups out for a last blast.

IMG_7975

Less trees around the campfire spot than when we were last here, our logistics duo have rebuilt the fire circle, and there are plenty of big log rounds lying about to use as seating!

IMG_7928

Fire is soon going, beers are opened, Butties are unwrapped, Butty has his tin of frankfurters on fire, and Stunt is extracting his from a flask of hot brine!

The 5th is not going un-marked, and some serious ordanance is being let off in the vicinity, we can’t see it, but it’s loud!

IMG_7943

It is very very good to be able to have bants, talk beery boll*cks and feel like life is normal(ish).

The evening is not cold, and not all the extra layers are needed, we do however consume all the beer, and the whisky!

IMG_7973

By which time a serious fog is enveloping the land, and its a cautious ride home in suitably legal pairs.

Many admit to feeling the effects of being a bit over refreshed the next day!

TNR 29-10-2020 Welcome to the Picture Drome

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew : Dunc, Troll, Butty , Chris & Pete

Route : The Maze – Grimshaw La – Chancery La – Lord St – Snicket – Ormes Smithy – Reverse Oakenbank – Jumper La – 4 Ways- Ewrin La – Hooleyhay La – Buxton Rd – Bottom of the Oven – Standing Stone – Nessit – Leathers – Macc (Picture Drome)

Joining us in town : Lee & Al

Conditions : mild but blowy

Notes

Ribaldry breaks out early with Dunc in tow

A minor obstacle on Oakenbank to be navigated – small tree down

A tracks and tarmac escape from Upper Bollingtonia to the Buxton Rd …lots of climbing

IMG_7762

Then a quick circuit of the forest via Nessit and fire tracks

Covid 19 does make us more inventive with our post ride entertainment – Chris’s suggestion of the Picture Drome  worked fairly well I think

Fairly good food – with pricey extras – good beer and millennial style ordering system (via app on your phone)

IMG_7763

13.6 c when I got home ! – and luckily no rain all evening until I was 5 mins from home

TNR 22-10-2020 Keep the Home Fires burning

Words by Pete, Photos by TJ & Pete

Crew : 3 sheds, TJ, Chris , Butty, Pete

Conditions : Dry and Autumnal

Notes

Some good logistics sorting by TJ made for a cracking evening –

Higher Poynton Hospitality at its best

Route : From RB and Middlewood …a push up to Dale Top after a reverse Birchencliffe , Then to Bow stones and a loop of Knights Wood before an escape out towards Moorside La and then the obligatory chapel visit (a fine bit of riding!) then down to Poynton woods , Princes Incline and The Coppice .

IMG_7552

Just before getting to TJs we had the bonus of a “wildlife feature” ..TJ shows us where the Badger set is …and the little tinkers appear to say hello. Thank goodness for head torches .

TJ fetches excellent nosh from the Strawberry Pig – Fish, chips & curry sauce is perfectly acceptable. Fish, chips and gravy is just plain WRONG !

Aldi beer selection was strong and varied (and damn good value) …and they do a palatable Bourbon as well

IMG_7556

The fire pit made the evening – with Woodsman TJ providing a constant supply !

IMG_7572

An excellent formula …and a late return south to Bolly and Macc when we have no 10pm chucking out time .

Headed for Waulkmill Wood

Words by Pete, Photos by TJ , Lee & Pete

Crew : Pete, El Pres, Dunc,  Bern, Lee , Butty , 3 Sheds , TJ

Route : RB – War Memorial – North End Farm – Waulkmill Wood – Poachers Snicket – Ormes Smithy – OakenBank – Jumper Lane – Highwayman – Gritstone Trail (refusal) – Brickworks Layby – Capped Mines – …..The Poachers

Conditions : Dry-ish and Cool ..occasionally a bit damp

Notes

The route was a Pete Production apart from the Gritstone Trail refusal and re-route (a Butty edit) .

This week we had Lee’s birthday to celebrate and a first time mid ride stop at the bench on Jumper Lane .

IMG_7390
Jumper Lane Bench

Not only did we get to toast Lee’s birthday with a half bottle of Jim Beam ..but Bern had brought posh glasses, the ceremonial kitchen towels and some freshly made Parkin. A special moment indeed.

IMG_7386
A fine tradition

Onward and upward with fuel and liquor to spur us on. At the top of Bakestonedale Rd we stopped to take the planned route along the Gritstone Trail towards Sponds ..but Butty halted the party handled us on an alternative route ..down to the Layby above Brickworks , a short push /grind up to the capped mines near the end of Dale top …then down the great rock strewn descent to Moorside Lane .

IMG_7391

A sub set of the full crew arrived at the Poachers and took up residence in the back yard – as the new rules have come into effect.

IMG_7413

On the plus side : We had shelter and it kept the rain off . Food was good –  Liver for Bern , halloumi burger for Lee and pies for the rest of us . Very welcome , as was the service and the beer. Speed Wobble was Hazy and tasty at 4.7% but over £5 a pint …

IMG_7402

On the downside : By 10pm we were getting a bit chilly despite our down jackets ….keeping warm post ride in the fresh air will need some inventive solutions

TNR 8-10-2020 Leathers via Kerridge

20201008-IMG_1006.jpg

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Covid Echelon A El Pres, Slim, Croxy, 3 Sheds

Covid Echelon B Stunt, Bern, Dunc, Butty

Route: RB, Endon House Climb, Quarry Steps, Kerridge Ridge to almost White Nancy, Field zig zags to the lower bridleway by Waulkmill wood, back along lower Kerridge to the “slope of slippery doom” and the main road. Bull Hill lane, New Road, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, Lower Teggs, Smithy.

Conditions: Cool, Mizzle then clear, lots of surface water!

This week a 5:30 start worked for all, and two echelons were required (once Butty had found his way around the mini flood by the pylon blocking his normal entry!)

20201008-IMG_2789.jpg

A Leathers finish arranged by El Pres = a slighly unusual route of familiar bits in a different order to normal.

Warm from the Endon house climb, El Pres suggests a short carry up the Quarry steps…in the direction of gunfire from the shooting range. Great views of low cloud and rain showers over the plain, lit from the side with the low sun in the west, very atmospheric!

Various fences on the ridge now “fixed” to keep you on the main track, so we end up almost at White Nancy before we can work our way down to the lower track. Wet grass off camber long zig zags to the rescue!

A lady rastafarian walker who we saw at the top, had descended by a much more direct route, and cheekily asked us why we were so slow!

The slipply slope of doom was in typical form, but not stupidly so, and once on the main road heads down for the Bull Hill climb. Regular Bern on top form (or needs drugs testing!!). More uppiness to Chazza in the last of the light, where a large owl was spotted by the first arrivers.

20201008-IMG_9229.jpg

Given that 25mm of rain (imperial inch) had fallen overnight, wetness was expected..small river was what we found! Even those taking the grassy path to the side fared little better than those on the splashy main track.

20201008-IMG_7209.jpg

At Narnia gate the state of rear ends caused some hilarity, and most were also experiencing the cold seep of water into socks from soaked shoes.

Narnia not too bad, but very loud streams nearby made it sound very different.

Hardingland dry as usual, a bit of skygazing as we regrouped as the skies had cleared, then lower teggs through a roaring ford, and some tendrils of mist by the ressies, and rapidly cooling air.

20201008-IMG_4895.jpg

Overflows in full force by the steps, farewell to the early bathers, and one last climb to the warmth of the Smithy.

Messing about at Sponds before the rollercoaster bit to Dale Top

Words by Alex, Photos by Butty & Pete

Crew: 3 Sheds, Lee, TJ, Butty, Dunc, Slim, Stunt

Route: RB, Clarke lane, Redway lane, Bridleway “under Nancy”, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone Trail, 1976 stone, Sponds, Dale Top, Top of beavers creek, past the mine memorial, quarry descent, Birchencliffe, Poachers.

Conditions: Dry, clear, cool.

No early start this week due to “workers”, and a covid compliant crew thanks to some of the Yorkshire Dales regulars “resting” after some big days earlier in the week.

A welcome return of the Ball, who was so excited to be back in circulation that he did a lap of Kerridge ridge before the ride started!

20201001-IMG_7034.jpg

Route almost the same as last week, but starting later twas to be a proper autumn ride. Already cool extra layers were in evidence from the start.

20201001_191755

A short but stiff climb on the Redway bridleway to warm us up, then a long grind up past the brickworks and beyond.

Reward at the top a fabulous low orange full moon was rising! Laggards Slim and Butty caused some hilarity as the rode past the Gristone gate to “get a better shot” (not sure that they would be any closer!?), they soon returned seeing sense, and got Funky to hold it still for a close up!!

20201001_193330

A ride of a thousand yellow eyes (and the odd low down green pair), through the scattered flock up to the 1976 stone (unbelivably a new feature for Dunc!).

There we played spot the transmitters, and a new mystery…very faint towards the Clyweds another red light lit mast….Moel-Y-Parc?

20201001_194754

Even better some Jura to celebrate Pete’s birthday, with pork pie and mustard!

Some geeky amateur astronomic excitement, as an ISS pass is expected at 20:04 hrs, Mars is visible, some stars are out, and at Sponds we do indeed catch a glimpse of the human made fast star.

Good omens as several of us also spot a disintegrating meteor looking rather like a substandard firework.

20201001-IMG_7033.jpg

Definitely very chilly now, and a super heavy dew on the grass. Cutting the corner from Sponds over the humpy bits not as easy in the dark, and we veer a little right hitting the main track earlier than ususal.

Fine views from Dale top, including 3 sheds trying to clean sheep poo from his newish bike!

Trails along the top and down still very firm and fast. Some debate about Birchencliffe (mainly as 3 sheds still wanting to keep his bike clean!!)

But nothing to worry about, with the water splash just a trickle!

Team Tythy are not pubbing and peel off right at the Pott Shrigley road to pick up the Middlewood.

The thirsty team head for the Poachers..and a no-show from El Pud?? (Slim Edit : But we sample some strange Orange Vanilla dark coloured concoction which turned out to be 6.3% ….which had to be followed by a round of Leffe Blondes.

It would be rude not to.

And the pub was fully emptied out by 10pm

TNR 24-9-2020 The latest “normal” means early doors.

Crews: Echelon A: Troll, Bern, Butty, Stunt. Echelon B: El Pres, TJ, Lee

Pub: possible G?

Route: RB, Middlewood to viaduct, down the steps, Queen’s street cobbles, Shrigley road, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone Trail, 1975 stone, Sponds, Dale Top, upper Beavers creek, back up to the top of the quarry, quarry descent, chapel descent, road to Poachers Snicket, road to the Bulls Head Kerridge.

Conditions: Dry, Mild, Broken cloud, cooling rapidly after sunset.

Notes:

With the closing of hostelries at 22:00hrs a new early start was enacted, 5:30 prompt at Rainbow bridge! Butty being not quite there yet, meant a ride along the middlewood in his general direction. Found on the viaduct, he then takes charge of the route and takes us up the cobbles of Queen street to escape the main drag for a bit.

With Sponds the target, and a 19:45 deadline at the Bull Head for tapas, a “climb on road” is invoked. It proves a fine plan, as we get splendid views from the tops in the evening light, with moody clouds, mist forming on the cheshire plain, and smoke rising in and around Alderley Edge ..be all those wood fired hot tubs 😉

As we climb the gritstone trail, two farmers boys are having great fun on quad bike vs scrambler bike across the moor.

Even more excitingly the plate on the 1975 stone finally lays to rest the “what is the transmitter mast that is not winter hill” debate of the last few rides…photographic evidence that it is Holme Moss, and just visible on the horizon it is (even in daytime without lights). Also the ladder hill one is clearly to the East!

Much enthusiastic pointing ensues!

Hard work done, downhill ensues, the moor is very hard after a dry summer, but the dew is already down to add some greasy interest!

We are at Dale top soon enough, and more Butty route planning for “all the fun bits”.

Horses on the quarry side of the fence seem happy to much grass extremely “close to the edge”. more fast descending 🙂 🙂

Chapel descent in the last of the good light, end a cracking route.

Time starts to press, and its a poachers snicket short cut to Lord Street and back up to Kerridge (apart from Stunt who misheard, and did Ingersley Vale, “under White Nancy” and Redway…although he did get to see Winter Hill in the distance…

Words by Stunt, Pics by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Butty, G, Troll, Slim, Stunt

Route: Stoneyfold lane, Zig, Zag, Charity, Extension, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, Yorkshire Northshore, Pyms Chair, Wingather Rocks, Taxal Edge, Kettleshulme dip, offroad climb past the “moorside”, Bowstones, towards Dale top, but then cut down to the Bakestonedale road layby, Poachers.

Conditions: Clear skies, mild, dry trails, windy higher up

Notes:

A fine evening for a “bring your butties for a big ride” presidential decree.

IMG_6362

Also for riding your chestnut gelding as a smartly turned out lady trotted past.

Caption competition for the view of the crew as Butty approached.

Route modified to include charity..be rude not to, and also we have time..

A covid compliant group of 6 ( we thought we might have a seventh, but 3 Sheds eventually told us he’d set off early and done the route solo)

Lovely light, if a little hazy for fine views all evening, the puddles of doom on the Zig almost dried out after the lack of rain, and the warm winds of late.

IMG_6365

Breeze picking up noticeably up to charity, where we begin a series of leap frogs with a lady biker who looked a little new to the route, but was gamely but cautiously getting on with it!

El Pres has a minor off, but nothing but bruised pride fortunately.

Coming into forest chapel, Pete mutters that there is a dummy or lifesize doll in the field by the old barn..however closer inspection reveals a well wrapped up lady on a folding chair watching for bats! Tricky light at dusk!!

More leapfrog with said biker on the skiddy extension, before a slog up into a stiff cross to headwind to the tea rooms.

Lights on the top track show we are not the only ones out tonight, and the flashing yellow lights on the main road turn out not to be an unseasonably early gritter..but that skinny lad on the fat bike with the anti-death high vis turned up to 11!

Extra layers required as the wind bites, and the gates all along the top track from the tea rooms have been smashed during lockdown madness!

IMG_6374

A fast and fun swoop down and up to shining tor, for yet more layers (and the odd clothing donning fail!)

G and El Pres do the ritual warning of doom, and to take it easy to avoid punctures!!

They need not have worried, a trouble free ride, with very welcome wind assist means we make good time to Pyms chair.

As we regroup there is time to watch the dark skies for satellites, debate the Northern light mast again (continued from last week), and look forward to the next section…

..everyones favourite flowy fun across the moor and along by the wall all the way to Wingather..it does not dissapoint!

Getting properly dark now, as we drop down across the field with the yellow eyes of the flock upon us, past the “bombhole” – which looks even bigger than ever, and down through the wood and up to the start of Taxal.

G scares the wildlife with his gritty groans as he bests the ascent in perfect conditions!

Another bust gate, then more great riding on the Taxal edge trail.

Time is ticking, but there is no wimping out, take 5 for a quick butty break, then onwards!

It’s nice to be out of the wind for a while, even if there is a nasty climb on the road before we head off past the very smart barn, round the corner past the slowly rotting nissan truck, and up the grassy track to the moorside.

One question in our minds, will there be any wind assist to bowstones…

Turning up mudhurst lane if has the feel of a headwind, but luckily there is little wind on the long straight, then it picks up to tail wind at the corner!

IMG_6388

Proper blowing it is on the track at the top, which has helped Stunt and Butty who have brought cans of (now chilled) beer (although still a bit frothy)

Only just time to neck it down before El Pres arrives with his beer legs, doesn’t stop and announces a final push to get to the Poachers for last orders!

Wind at our backs helps propel us over the uppy bits, and a fast descent to the layby and even faster down the road..target achieved!

Fantastic night, great riding…good training!

And the hospitality of the Poachers (and the Presidential Residence) was excellent …….

IMG_6391

TNR 10-9-2020 Big Berns ever decreasing crew!

IMG_6010
what goes on when Alex does not make the pub …..?

Words by Alex (& Pete), Photos by Pete & Butty

Crew: Bern, El Pres, Butty, Troll, TJ, Slim, Lee, Stunt

Route: Muller Corner, Zig, Teggs, Smithy, Witches cottage, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, Ressies, Smithy

Conditions: Clear, mild, little wind, cool later, damp trails in places.

Notes:

Much debate at “Muller corner” while we assemble about the new normal now becoming the old normal, and what protocols will be appropriate next week (echelons of 6?).

Good to see the prodigal Stunt back for the ride (if not the pub).

Bern takes charge of the route and leads us off at some pace uphill to Teggs.

IMG_6012
Was this is where it all went wrong ???

Mandatory tyre pressure fiddling from his salad dodgingness in prep for the descent (great conditions!), and still waters make for good pics across the water at the bottom.

Food order placed then a long drag up to the gate beyond the cottage, an even longer wait for Pete who had stopped at the bottom to put more air back in to said tyre! Eventually we spot a communication that he was retiring to the pub early with faffage!!

(Pete’s confession : After Lee , and Chris, came to my aid, the errors of my ways became evident. The tubeless valve was not tight to the rim , and my Topeak Pump was missing the vital end cap. I had tried a C02 cylinder, but the leaky valve was my downfall. A quick tighten up of the valve and a proper working pump and we were back on our way…thanks Lee !!. And Chris, my campaign to persuade you of the value of tubeless tyres will begin afresh next week 🙂 )

Huffing and puffing we deal with the slope that is hacked way lane up to the start of charity…Bern and Butty start a lengthy debate on the red light adorned tall mast to the North and then we wonder why we are missing riders…another message…El Pres and Lee have gone back to “help” ahem!

IMG_5994
Just to prove that the tyre faff was only temporary !

Leaving the mast research for later we continue up charity (Windy Hill at Saddleworth is due north but doesn’t look high enough..which puts Holme Moss slightly to the East as most likely..)

Mini top gear special as 3 take the under the trees trails to Narnia (very muddy but a new berm), or the main track and back (suprisingly rocky and wet!).

The under tree conditions kybosh further exploration, so back to complete Charity and the Extension.

We visit Nessit – which is weird without benches at present, then downhill led by the exuberant Butty and Troll for big smiles (and almost wrong turns) back to the Smithy.

Pete’s Pub Report :

  • John’s hospitality was up to its normal high standard
  • Seafarer , Pedigree and Moretti slaked our first
  • A freebie round of John’s latest concoction ..Guiness & Coke (-a -Cola !!)
IMG_6001
  • There was a small AOE
  • Twas a bit chilly on the descent through Langley

Bring butties for a bigger ride next week floated by El Pres
