TNR 2/11/2023 Puddletown Martyrs

Crew: El Pres, Butty, Dunc, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Kersh

Route: Middlewood way Clark lane bridge, Clark lane, Redway lane, “under Nancy”, back of Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank, Poachers

Conditions: Light rain, very muddy and epic puddles.

Notes:

With storm Cieran battering the south coast and swirling round to bring heavy rain all day – the forecast looked bleak early doors. A few brave souls committed to a later start and shortish ride to the pub.

Dunc suggested an under the bridge meet on the middlewood way to be out of the worst of it.

But lo the storm shifted south, and the rain edged away so by our 7pm meet it was just light rain.

Some urban artwork on the wall of the bridge, and just before we set off, three lady runners came down the ramp – and cheekily quipped “hiding from the rain boys?” – good banter!

More suprising was the barrage of fireworks going off somewhere to the West – a proper display – but why a Thursday night when the 5th is Sunday (and rubbish weather)!?

A bit of overheating on the steep climb “under Nancy” with a lot of waterproof layers in evidence, at the top its a bit misty – or maybe we are sort of in cloud?

The super wet conditions from earlier mean is super slippy on the grass and muddy tracks, plenty of slithering especially off camber.

Pete takes us up to an old mineshaft (or airshaft?) that had opened up in the second field, he had peeked town the other day and told of a brick lined shaft…but the coal board had been there first and capped it off :-(.

We pass a couple of the Nancy’s coming the other way before tackling the slope of doom! it’s no worse that what we have been dealing with already – but we all get caught out on the track out where front wheels suddenly dip into an unseen boggy bit – no off’s but lots of muttering 😉

Time to admire the number plate on the car parked opposite when we reach the road – 0007 CMB – call me bond? only on a golf mind you (or does it have Q division secret features?)

Huge patch of water across the whole lane just before Oakenbank – and wet feet as it was over the bottom bracket! Butty worries about his motor waterproofness!!

A blast down Oakenbank and into the Poachers – which is eerily quiet with just us, the two nancies and one couple in residence.

You get served quick at the bar though!

This weeks baguette of choice is the bacon and mozzarella, El Pres has a minor vinegar crisis (soon solved) and the stout is the beer of choice.

G (with doggie in tow) pops in, and a mini AoE fortifies us for a chilly damp ride home.

Crew : Capt Chandler, Pete, El Pres, Dr S, PTD, Butty , Troll, 3Sheds, Doog, TJ , Bern

Pub : Ruth, Adrian & Biscuit

Route : Top of Bull Hill – Cat & Fiddle – A54 – Cumberland Clough – Standing Stone – Nessit – lower section of downhill course – The Leathers

Conditions : Moonlit, no rain , cool at altitude & wet under wheel

Notes :

An excellent Funky Dunky production

The call to arms was put out first thing on Thursday .

Attendance assessment was digitally enabled on the TNR WhatsApp chat group .

A biggish turn out – eight at the muster point , Bern joins us after Walker Barn after suffering a little “geographic amnesia” .

20231026-IMG_0695-Enhanced-NR.jpg

Butty & PTD are with us by the time we get to the Cat . Eleven in the crew is impressive !

20231026-IMG_0697-Enhanced-NR.jpg

The moonlit cloudscape is ace all the way through tonights ride. There is something particularly desolate about being up high on a dark moonlit night . It always feels like a proper ride.

Headed for Danebower Hollow

Chumby is rough as hell now – especially  between the A54 and the waterfall – you really have pick your line and watch the deep ditch-like bits.

At Nessit benches we gather to share in a dram : the payload of Bunnabhain (pronounced Bun-a-haavan I believe) I have brought . A little toast to an anniversary. I have been a gentleman of leisure now for five years.

20231030-WhatsApp Image 2023-10-26 at 23.05.47.jpg

A special thanks to Dr S – as the malt was a gift from him (and his good lady) for my 60th.

We get our normal warm welcome in the Leathers . Beers of choice are Guinness (Inc 3sheds ! Even though it ain’t  lager) & Neck Oil .

Salmon salad seems to be the choice of the majority , except for El Pres and my bad self . Much as I like salad , deep fried Haddock and some hefty chips just seems to be the right answer after a decent circuit on the hill .

Other observations: John the landlord suggests I have a look of The Viking about me. I feel this may be a fair cop, as I am a little bearded and hirsute . And I originate from a place with loads of Norse heritage ( all the villages have names which end in -by, a Viking naming convention for a settlement).

The inevitable axis of evil comes to pass. I give John carte blanche on whisky choice … and he comes back with a bottle of .. Bunnabhain.

It is true – lightning can strike twice in the same spot .

20231026-IMG_2920.jpg

By the time Ruth arrives to take charge of the Troll , he is trying to some up enthusiasm for a different Xmas do TNR do .

On the canal towpath return journey for me and TJ, he gets to the AZ bridge first and encounters a large Badger ? scurrying off in the opposite direction .

A fine end to a fine evening.

TNR 19-10-2023 Old Skool Rules

Crew: Eric, El Pres, Slim, TJ, Doog, Dunc, Stunt.

Route: BackEddisbury Lane (bottom of the Zag), Windyways, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, Lower Teggs, Smithy, reverse reservoirs, White Rabbit ascent, Nessit, White Rabbit decent, ressies, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Mild, breezy, occasional rain showers.

Notes:

A day that had delivered a fair bit of sunshine and warmth finally succumbed to the forecasted showers just as folk were venturing to the bike. Too warm for full wets, a variety of tactics from waterproof top but std shorts, softshell top and waterproof trousers, or the TJ Tough Guy approach – short sleeved jersey and shorts!

A special ride as we welcomed Eric back for the evening, and in the spirit of TNR’s past we had no E bikes, 3 Orange 5’s, and one hardtail. News that Doog has sold his E having only ridden it twice in 6 months! (let’s hope that our E Banter did not put him off) and he is sporting a mint Trek hardtail bought of ebay from someone who may also have only ridden it a couple of times.

In the rosy light of the setting sun we head up the Zag and then up Charity, the late warmth having tempted out dandelions and other flowers in the verges (lots of ladybirds in the gardens today too).

Looking out across the plain at the start of Charity proper, moody skies, Winter hill blanketed in murk, but red aircraft tail lights clearly visible at Manchester airport, and debate over the patch of lights due west in the middle distance, Knutsford? Widnes?…Northwich says I having run a line across the map later.

The damper weather has transformed the loose stones/dust into a firmer surface as they settle into a nice bed of muddy soil. Lights definitely needed for the decent – and tonight feels like the first proper dark and damp winter ride, proper slithery in Narnia, and then the contrast with Hardingland which is always suprisingly dry!

Lower Teggs towards the Langley reservoirs lead rider sees two red deer hinds crossing over the track, and then climbing up towards the Smithy a pair cross over the lane too – the same ones doubling back? They weren’t that bothered by our presence or lights.

TJ has promised Whisky – bought with his first state pension cheque! and after a warm climb up to Nessit, its time to sample the Jura he has provided. He’s set a target to drink it all tonight, so we happily have a second nip, and then as relaxed conversation gets philosophical, a third!

We’ve not quite finished it, but decide that it might be best to head downhill and to the pub, someone decides that avoiding the normal downhill might be a good idea – so fast downhill on gravel with bends instead 😉 Good fun, and no offs! although Dunc did wonder where everyone went as he went the ususal way.

Reunited by the Smithy, route one to Sutton Hall.

El Pres is immediately spotted as the iPad destroyer..but it seems they have forgiven him (and secured the offending chalkboard). We are just able to order food in time (you might be able to book a table at 9pm – but you had better be there by 8:45 or the kitchen will close). Doog does a double Lucan and wishes us well, the rest of us wash down the (expensive compared to the Poachers) food, with Lucan, Disco Balls (a diaphanous IPA) or the wincle stout “Tastes like a coal fire” ..apparently that’s praise!

The cheekiest denim top and the strength of modern button thread distracts some, before we enter the zone of TR8’s, songs about trains (there are over 800 of them you know), Pete’s party lifestyle…oh and El Pres does pudding!

Venturing outside the weather has finally decided to get a little more serious, so that’s all the excuse needed to finish the last of the Jura before wobbling home in the strengthing rain. Although we got away lightly as by following morning over 40mm of rain had fallen from the coat tails of Storm Babet.

TNR 12-10-2023 Foxlow Folly

Crew: El Pres, Dunc, TJ, Butty, 3 Sheds, Slim, G, Stunt

Route: Top ‘o Bull Hill Lane, Tea Rooms, Stakeside, Shooters Clough, Errwood, Foxlow Edge, Pym Chair, Jenkin Chapel, Ewrin Lane, Smith Lane, Robin Hood, Oakenbank, Poachers.

Conditions: Cool, muddy in places.

Notes:

Dunc declares a Goyt route and Poachers finish, and no one diagrees 😉

Autumnal temps have finally appeared, and although its not cold, its cool compared to the last few weeks.

A promptish start from Bull Hill lane – leaving the late arriving E’ers to catch up en route to the tea rooms.

Dusk has fallen by the time we reassemble, G did Charity and Bottom of the oven (and beat us all to boot), Butty caught up from behind. A chill wind = the odd extra layer.

It feels like a long time since we did the long descent along the wall into the Goyt – proper mountain biking! First proper dark descent – and first slippy mud too! Luckily only in patches, but enough to notice the lack of grip.

More fun down shooters clough – and the wet section with a layer of the slimy brown stuff on top gets a few folks unexpectedly sideways ;-).

At Errwood the track up to the Shining Tor-Pym Chair ridge looks to have been resurfaced – we didn’t explore how far up that went though..

Some drainage work at Kershaws ditch of doom = slippy slabs, so care just before the steps needed.

Over the stream a long debate about Shrine or Foxlow, eventually we decide to do Foxlow.

It seems we have forgotten both the exact route (we cut a corner and had a super steep push early on), and just how much pushing there is – the track was both partially overgrown and muddy – not much riding until atop the ridge.

The bonus grassy descent to the road was good fun though – despite the dew.

At Pym chair we challenge E-G to do the cheshire corkscrew in reverse whilst we do the traditional “dead mans hill” route – he takes the bait. At the corner of Smith lane he tells us it was great fun with a couple of dabs – the shrubbery sticking out of his pack suggested that they might have been a little more than that ;-).

Tired legs (or bodies in the case of double jabbed Butty) take a little persuading to do Oakenbank – but of course its worth it!

Sarah is back in da house to look after us, the Seven Brothers IPA is an excellent session beer – and goes down very fast (or maybe we had worked up a decent thirst). Special mention for the special Haddock and Chips – best fried fish in a long time!! After some debate on the rather depressing situations in the world, the Vicount of Ribaldry (aka Dunc) and Beelzebug of Badness (aka Butty) take us into more light hearted and humourous territory. Aided by the chewy coffee flavoured pudding stout. Tales of glorious riding in the Pyrenees from G, Butty and TJ test out visual search algorithms on the rest of us …with disappointing/depressing results..younger but uglier!! A discussion on heart rate on acoustic vs E contines online post the ride. In a make of it what you will, G on E, and Stunt and Dunc on acoustic all had the same max heart rate of c160bpm. The debate about fitness and E bikes will continue…

A whisky free night SHOCKER! but a classic TNR 🙂 Not quite a Munro night, but 800+m (2600+ft) of climb was a decent effort.

Torrential rain alerts on phones sting us into action, with rapid riding home in lightish rain we get in ahead of the deluge (21.8mm recorded overnight by Buxton weather). “Quadrophonic” owls reported in Bolly.

TNR 5-10-2023 The Big Bang!

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, Bern, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: Croxy

Route: Back Eddisbury Lane, Zag, Teggs nose, Holehouse lane car park, Smithy, Nessit Hill loop, Smithy.

Conditions: Dull and mild, wet later then very wet!

Notes:

A day of on and off rain, but the TNR slot looks like it might get away with it, or just some light stuff.

The President takes charge of operations, and takes us forestwards with a Smithy finish for some variety.

A late running Stunt will take Saddlers way and along the bottom to try to RZ at the car park (where he gets bumped by a careering badger that explodes out of a hedge!).

More variety with a Teggs exploration having done the zag, with wet ground the main descent needs care in places.

At the bottom El Pres’s tyre lets go with a BIG BANG! and a huge tear, this is no Thornton style over sweated asset – but a 2 month old tyre with a catastrophic failure. It takes a couple of attempts to fix, the milk bottle carton inset trick does not do the job, but two tie wraps achieve a soft but rideable situation. Prankster Phil making a second loud bang as they test the inflation 😉

Stunt has been left confused by seeing riders descending, but then not appearing, so has headed uo to the Smithy (for what turns out to be a long wait).

Eventually and with rain falling, we arrive to order food. El Pres declares that he will be staying – not wanting to risk the tyre any further, heroically three others offer to stay and keep him company. With TNR flag continuing to be flown by Butty, 3 Sheds and Bern who head out to do the white rabbit ascent and then loop back down from Nessit.

In the Smithy there is beer tap faff, as both first and second beer choices run dry before a pint can be pulled! After John scurries into the cellar to sort the situation, we end up with Neckoil, and then head onto the recommended Titianic Steerage IPA.

We are kept amused by the boys on the other table who are geekily into “van life” topics amidst proper boyish banter.

The intredpid trio arrive back rather damp reporting heavy rain arriving at the bottom of the climb. Butty being particularly under dressed for it…a case of the shacket not hacking it 😉

One of the kitchen team comes out with terrible news that there is only one fish and chips, El Pres generously lets Phil have it, and then (having to have the menu read to him as the specs are misplaced) he upgrades to a rare steak.

As the food arrives…and shock – there are two fish portions on Phil’s plate!! could El Pres have had his fish an chips after all??? fortunately his steak is amazing and all is good. The ales flow, and the topics bounce from cycling gear…much love for Endura stuff, random trivia – life on Mars actor who used to live on Barracks lane (Chris Skelton), life updates…Bern’s “bumble’ings”, ribaldry..grandads knackers, and familiar themes….not missing work f@8kwittery – with Croxy celebrating his first week in the catgory of “not economically active”.

Early leavers report the outside situation as wetter than an otters pocket, so definitely whisky to face the homeward journey (watch the candle when clinking glasses though!)

Sadly the situation has not improved as we unlock bikes, El Pres decides his tyre is fit for purpose to get home, and foolishly turns down the lift offer from Croxy, and we head cautiously down the road in heavy rain.

Legs soaked to the skin by the time we are through Langley, and just as Dunc mentions that the repair is holding up well…a huge balloon appears and El Pres is forced to stop. There is nothing to be done, but deflate the tyre to get the inner tube back (amazingly it did not pop), and take the long wet walk home.

Debate on time of “walk from Sutton to Barracks lane” vs “bike to bolly” is settled by the 3 rings protocol. With the walk of shame being faster.

Fortunately the October mini heatwave is on the way, so it was not cold.

Learning points – tubeless is the answer, never refuse a lift when you have a dodgy bike, don’t leave the waterproof trousers at home when the foreacast is rain, never believe the forecast and prepare for the worst.

Will it be winter boots next week?

TNR 28-09-2023 Pete’s 60th Spunch

Thornton officiating a MTB Spunch with 40x20point controls scattered across an area as far as the northern edge of Lyme park, Bowstones, the Middlewood way, Bolly, & Kerridge. The White Rabbit Ear trophy once again up for grabs!

Teams

Top Marks – Mardell & McDermott Scratch

Tythy Twosome – Dunc & Stunt Scratch

Presidential Pair- El Pres & Troll +10%

Over 60’s -Pete & Eric +20%

E C u next Tue -Butty -20%

Lone Ranger – TJ +20%

Pub: 3 Sheds, Big Nic, PTD, Ruth

Contitions: Light rain on and off, mild, slight breeze.

Pete’s birthday wish was for a Eriquest revival using Spunch technology, and Mr T happily obliged!

Map boards were dug out of garage nooks and tie wrapped to handlebars, lights charged, and excitement built!

With allocated teams and andycapping published we could arrive at Gleave Av for a glass of fizz, a warm sausage roll (or two), admire the trophy, faff over the app and settings (bizarrely many older iphones test spunch sound check were quite faint).

A rambling staggered start with Mr T checking our tech was working, and briefing us on the finish point on the poachers snicket – with dire warnings not to take this route until the end!

Then it was issue of paper maps – decide route options and GO GO GO for two hours of spunchy fun!

Fast forward to the poachers – a table complete with 60th Birthday balloon (taking the nancies normal table no less!) and a download of results, mental maths on handicaps, and checking for staying within the rules.

One of the top scratch pairings the Two Marks – had gone big – through Lyme park and up to Bowstones..but struck by puncture disaster taking a full 20mins to sort, and hence falling short of expectations.

A big talking point was whether the E bike handicap was severe enough…Butty covered the most distance, got the most controls, but with 20% off took a net score of 432 into the pub as virtual leader.

The Tythy twosome had taken a two part approach – with a early little loop to the south to pick up easy controls, before heading across to Pott Shrigley up to Dale top from the layby, avoiding Lyme park, and then a big sweep back down through Stypersons, the middlewood way/canal, and back up through Bolly for a big finish. 500 points delivered.

None of the other teams could get beyond the low 400’s with net scores, the Presidential pairing claiming bronze (after some investigation into anomolous divergent traces..dodgy old phone blamed).

TJ dispelled some myths by making it back unassisted!

All agreed it was an excellent course, and great fun. The trophy returns to Tythy for safe keeping until the next event – with Eric suggesting big birthdays a natural trigger for TNR spunching.

As we worked our way through pale ales, normal bitter, and the chewy breakfast stout (with Vietnamese coffee no less) an eclectic topic mix included unusual gargoyles and carvings, the use of GPS devices that show you where you are – yes or no, in orienteering style events, and of course the great reveal of the Big Birthday present!

Bird nesting box with camera and wifi – much admired, and plenty of tit jokes!

Butty had also brought the folding cups to distribute to those who had ordered, plenty of alternative uses for those too! 😉

A fine evening topped off with the obligatory whisky, and no doubt the tales of derring do with have grown longer by the time they are retold on Saturday night.

Happy Birthday Pete!

TNR 21-09-2023 SheepShitShow

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, 3 Sheds, Troll, Dunc, Butty, Stunt

Pub: Adrian & Biscuit

Route: Rainbow bridge, Redway lane, back of Kerridge, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley Vale, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone trail, Sponds, Dale Top, quarries descent, chapel descent, Pott Shrigley, Long Lane, Beeston mount, Poachers.

Conditions: Fine, still, cool later.

Notes:

Dunc arrives on the freshly reassembled full suss, and we get the lowdown on changing all 10 bearings, and mirth at his comment of how smooth his back end is now!

Pete has a new front light, and Butty is on the “old” E-MTB having broken the E bit of the new one at the weekend after a clipping a pedal on a treestump (there was no sympathy!)

With no advance route plan, and a lack of credible alternatives, it’s a Sponds high point to aim for.

With a Spunch countryside score PeteQuest next week – we get stuck into what is the right bike, and what handicapping for E C**ts, we can hear Thornton licking his proverbial lips at the prospect of local rules.

“Taxi to the kerb” as we pass a small car parked a good metre from the pavement on the start of the climb up to the Bulls Head, and motoring nostalgia is invoked as a TVR Chimera on Redway lane is started up. That V8 is running a little lumpily “well all the cylinders are firing…just not necessarily in the right order”

Heading down “under Nancy” we head right for a little section along the back of Kerridge, before cutting back down the slippery slabs to Waulkmill wood, and the heaviest gate in the parish.

Recent rain has put the trail into muddy mode, which makes it worthy of concentration.

At the bottom, a chap is reversing his short wheelbase defender (with SantaCruz on the back), and we reunite him with his bottle, which has fallen off.

The puppy training class are further along the lane this week, and all seemed well behaved!

Long climb up to the gritstone becomes a race to the sunset, which we lose, but do get treated to some nice pink cloud formations close to a vertical half moon low in the sky.

A lot of sheep in the fields, and plenty crowding the shonky gate at the start of the gritstone. They do part to let us through – the farmer needs a new gate post, the current flappy fence mess needs more that two bits of nylon string to sort it out!

Cresting the ridge the dusk views are superb, the air is still and clear, and clouds here and there add to the ambience. Also admiring the view is a new landcape feature – two huge slabs of rock now form a bench, with a smart plaque to the late old farmer who can watch his flocks in peace.

Somehow watching sheep turns into inappropriate alternative gatherings for pete’s 60th, ribaldry zone is definitely reached early.

All the fine september weather has kept the grass growing for longer, so it seems that all available animals are out to pasture – lots and lots of sheep, 2 horses by the Trig, and a herd of black cattle spread out further down.

Jackets and buffs on as the temperature starts to fall, lights on, and across to Dale top, then down the quarries descent on very wet dewy grass.

Lead riders get an extremely bright ISS Pass overhead as the equally bright lights of their compadres wind their way down. Dunc stops at the tree to adjust rear shock pressure (then regrets it).

Meanwhile at the bottom – the no mudguard policy of Butty is now regretted – the thing about so many animals is that there is a proportional increase in sheep shit – he’s covered in it, and so is his bike!

Time for the Chapel descent – and the best lines into the stream are overgrown with very spiky bushes!

With some puddles and more wet grass – the worst of the sheepy stuff is off the tyres at least, but some washing machines may be doing overtime in the morning.

Poachers is very busy, but the team look after us well, a golf themed IPA is spurned (with good reason) for pumps of doom, or Dortmunder, food arrives in stages, which leads to El Pres finishing ahead of the rest!!

Adrian and Biscuit arrive too – causing much doggy conversation with various folk.

We get the low down on the paragliding mishaps of Phil’s mates – but the wisdom seems to be – when the weather turns spicy take the safe landing spot even if it means a 3 hours hike back, rather than try to get back to the target spot, then get stuck in no mans land with no good options. Clearly multi week hospital stays from dodgy landings are far worse than a long walk and wounded pride.

An impromptu quiz on how many films each bond made, and lots of general banter.

Pudding beer is the old hag, then the AoE go Leffe/Whisky.

Chilly ride home despite the beer jacket.

And after all that no one mentioned it was the solstice – tis now officially Autumn.

TNR 14-9-2023 Liking Local Loops

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Slim, Stunt

Route: Bolly Maze, Tinkers Clough, Endon House climb, push up the steps, Kerridge Ridge back towards Lidgetts lane, back of Kerridge to Waulkmill Wood, Poachers Snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road, Moorside lane to the end, up the grassy ascent to Dale Top, down the grassy singletrack by the wall, Birchencliffe, Long Lane, Green Lane, Beeston Mount, Poachers.

Conditions: Overcast , warm and muggy.

Despite doomladen forecasts of rain all evening, the skies are lighter with bits of brightness as we assemble at the Bolly Maze (or the temple of dogsh*t according to Pete).

No route plan has been concocted in advance, what emerges from a team discussion is a desire to do some routes closer to home that we haven’t done in a while. We start with Tinkers Clough and a choice of routes down – the LHS of the steps is simplest and apart from an early slippy pipe is not especially challenging, Butty heads off Right and finds it a bit trickier! The other side is greasy from recent rain, so pushing is needed.

Crossing the tranquility of the canal, we say hi to various dog walkers and some dad and young son riders as the stony track cuts between fields of plump ewes and the odd horse. A quick whizz down the road to the war memorial turn enables us to see the full range of 7 old merc C class’s that the farmer has gently rotting away.

We challenge the E ers to get up the steps – and they don’t even make the first one! (it is quite big to be fair) . Hot from the pushing TJ strips down to a single layer to cries of Putin! we admire the bulk of the A380 as it comes over, and gasp at the girth of some of the sheep poo we have to avoid on the ridge trail.

Gate helpers need to watch out for shitty tyres to the face when assisting fellows carrying bikes through the kissing gates!

Fine views from the trig, and a fine dry rocky descent to the end of the ridge (or is it the start?)

A quick 180 and back along the lower path all the way to Waulkmill wood, admiring the endeavour of the guy at the bottom who has been cutting up huge chunks of the big fallen tree.

We provide apparently useful distraction (to not be distracted) to the puppy training class all walking their hounds at the end of Ingersley vale, then cut up through the snicket, past the poachers and across to Pott Shrigley.

We’re not going to go all the way up Bakestonedale road to the gritstone, but instead cut in along Moorside lane to the Lyme Park Moor wall, then turn right up the grassy slope to Dale Top.

An impromptu acoustic bike climb challenge ensures – none get all the way up without at least one little bit of pushing, but Stunt gets furthest, and then completes the rest on two wheels.

With the red lights of the Manchester construction burning bright against dark skies, TJ proffers some Laphroig in celebration of a recent Birthday. #epicfail on cups, so ingenious improvisation finds the top of water bottles upside down and even the body of a head torch can work rather well! (the torch even worked afterwards!)

Time is a ticking, route 1 down alongside the wall – is narrow, and very wet with dew, so just as technical in it’s own way as the more usual quarry descent.

Birchencliffe is not as wet as it could have been, but still a good water splash, then lanes all the way back into Bollingtonia, sheeps eyes glinting green in our lights.

A busy Poachers, but we are well looked after by Sarah and the team, it’s been warm enough for some Dortmunder lagers to quench the thirst of some, and we have the full spectrum with pale ales, and american brown ale, and a fudgy stout!.

It’s been an evening to savour the turning of the seasons, and a bivvy night soon?

The AoE do a Leff Whisky combo, and it’s still a dry run home!

TNR 7-9-2023 Shrubbery Shenanigans

Crew: PTD, Butty, Troll, 3 Sheds, Coley, Croxy, Bern, Dunc, Dr S, G

Shrubberies: Doog, El Pres, Ruth

Route: Bottom of Zag, Charity, Under the trees singletrack to Narnia, LHS trail from just before the bench to the fire road, “Into the sun” segment to the trail, back up and across to do the long wiggly singletrack back to the trail, down to the gate and road to Leathers, across the bottom of the ressie, up the white rabbit ascent half way, more singletrack down, final wiggle back up and round the back of the wall to the come out near Bob’s bench, back along the ressie path to the Shrubberies.

Conditions: Hot and sultry!

Notes:

A PTD/Doog production offering al fresco curry at the Shrubberies is a recipe for success in a week where it may be meterelogical autumn, but defintely still astronomical summer!

Big turnout on a hot night, with some high level cloud taking the worst of the radiant heat out of the sun, it’s gone humid!

Route discussions focus on minimising climb and maximising the dry conditions, so a high point at Charity then much meandering singletrack on the way down.

Despite a couple of large muddy mires close to the entry point, the conditions under the trees are dry and firm as predicted, the trail from the bombhole all the way to Narnia is fast and fun!

Following Mando Paul “It is the way” we take the next section from Narnia down to the lower fire road, this one is getting a bit more deeply rutted on the corners – but plenty of offline options which are equally good.

A very steep exit is not for all, but PTD and G show us how to get some air off the bank once we are on the fire road proper.

Butty shows he does not know the way with a brief and fruitless foray into the wrong track (and some face attacking vegetation), PTD takes us the right way for the down and up (mind the rock at the end) “into the sun” – although tonight that was not a problem..indeed lights were on for some.

A quick backup and round to take a slightly different entry that leads to the singletrack all the way down under the trees to the bottom of the trail from the Smithy. With a brief stop to check Trolls contact lens, and a time check, we are led down past the pub, the last of the dog walkers, and across the ressies.

A final climb up the white rabbit ascent in the dusk, then more wiggly fun – one new little jump gives a few folk some unexpected air – but luckily speed is their friend and all land safely. A right hand side option takes us down some extremely steep stuff – and out by the steps, maybe next time the LHS exit?. A short climb back up the start of the white rabbit main path, back towards the ressies, then a 180 to take the rooty trails behind the wall down to Bobs bench.

A last whizz back past the ressies and the gate to the Shrubberies slides back to let us in!

Troll and PTD share brick pattern geekiness “nice flemish” on the front, and “english garden” on the side. It’s coming along but still much to do before it’s habitable, but what a view from the garden!

We are camped in one corner with some tables and chairs close to a large mound of soil. PTD gets a fire going with waste timbers, Doog and Chris arrive bearing beer and the magic box of curry wonderment, and all the pieces are in place!

Hard not to look at the sky – the wind must have shifted round, as the aircraft are all coming in to Manchester for a South to North landing (which is unusual). Some satellites seen, and a discussion about when Orion appears (January). 3 Sheds has us crying with laughter with a clip from down under relating how not to test a taser! 😉

We get a Rum finish, with a taste of Dropworks white rum from Shaun’s latest locale (punchy!), and then some smooth golden loveliness of Wireworks aged dark rum.

Does one need an extra layer for the ride home? maybe, but definitely not two as Dunc finds out by the time he’s halfway back – 19C at midnight in Tythy.

Now can I find a cassette spacer to sort that horrendous rattling from the back of my steed!?

Words & pics by Pete

Route : Bolly library – Towpath to Brookledge lane – Pott Shrigley RV with the Poynton Posse – Brickworks- Moorside lane – boundary wall (of Park Moor) climb – Dale top – GT – naughty 90degree descent- Cornfields Rd – Edge of Kettleshulme – Reform School – Mudhurst Lane – Butty footling on the North side of Lyme Park – traverse to the West  Gate – Poynton sunset strip (Flute & Firkin)

Conditions  : Overcast but no real rain (until the latesters were almost home) , mild (it was 12c on the way home but felt warmer)

Prologue

Pete : “I really appreciate you putting out a route idea earlier today “

Dunc : “ I don’t like uncertainty”

Thank god that we have some Project Manager’s mentality amongst us !

Notes :

This week we ended up with a novel route plan and a smooth, seamless  leadership transition from Dunc to Butty .

And …Four in the crew is a magic number , imho .

This week the random “pub topics of conversation “ started early ..well before we reached thewatering holes of Poynton :

  • Reggie Perrin
  • “ Warning : this TNR report reflects the values of the aged un-pc riders , whose moral compass was forged in the 1970s”
  • Pirate Radio mast at Bowstones in years gone by
  • Frank side bottom & Little Frank & Amoeba Frank
  • The Bradshaw’s of Barnoldswick

We skirted the edge of Kettleshulme by dropping off the Gritstone Trail just short of Bowstones. I have been this way once or twice before…a cart track width path , quite fun but the late summer grass was deep and hid family loaf-sized rocks .  A bit of a minefield.

At the end of this we hit tarmac and crossed into a narrow lane (Cornfields)

A traverse of a just about deserted Lyme Park …Butty kept suggesting a bit of gatuitous firtling  e-play

Greasy pig (aka The Strawberry Pig) shuts at 8:30!

Sausage & chips & curry sauce all round – nothing else left

Flute & Firkin – for a few beers :

Paulaner weissbeer (the main contender imho) – Neighbourhood liquid state – a Pale Ale (so so) –

7 Bros something or other (again a bit so so)

Fed & Watered for About £24 a head – good value in my book

Then a bit of a TNR first – a mini AOE back in TJ’s Motor home quaffing Maker’s Mark !

Left Coppice lane 00:01 ..home by 00:35 – now we know what its like for Butty & TJ on all those late returns from Macc !
