TNR 24-08-2023 God’s own country

20230824-IMG_0132.jpg

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Troll, Butty, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: 3 Sheds, Adrian & Biscuit, Ruth

Route: Top of Bull Hill, Charity, Extension, Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, Left Hand trail down and up over Andrew’s edge to Hooleyhey lane, Ewrin lane, Smith lane, Rainow, Oakenbank, Poachers.

Conditions: Sunny & dry, cool breeze initially.

Notes:

After a dreary day the clouds parted late afternoon to give us a fine evening for a ride.

A long overdue visit to the grassy trail off shining tor is the aim of tonights route.

Troll gets a Ruthie blue van assist to the rv (and we all get Ruthie hugs!)

20230824-IMG_0092.jpg

With Dunc running late and meeting us at the tea rooms it’s time to get going – and pop a cheeky charity into the mix.

A lot of raptor action tonight – three buzzards were having a flap about territory as we looked Maccwards from our rendevous point, and two kestrels were patrolling the fields on the right hand side of tarmac charity (and Pete spotted another one later on).

Charity had a “damped down” quality with the rocks settling back into a bit of moist sandy soil, it rode very well and not too wet lower down.

In forest chapel the first of many waits for our photographer (super light again this week), and we are kept amused by a hiccuping sheep, the sight of Butty coming to get a video seemed to cure it immediately!

Extension getting gnarly, but we spit out at the bottom without incident (if you don’t count a couple of arm grazes from overhanging brambles)

The long winch up to the Buxton road gives plenty of time to admire the scenery, and wonder about the lack of progress at the part built barnage at the horsey place on the LHS.

20230824-IMG_0103.jpg

Dunc is waiting patiently for us at the tea rooms, and a few dog walkers on the trail across the top. A chilly breeze has sprung up – so layers on at Shining Tor.

20230824-IMG_0123.jpg Shutlinsloe and Croker hill from Shining Tor

We are now riding directly into the sun, sunglasses though are now a mixed blessing as the sun sinks lower. Over the wall and onto the main event – it’s in better condition than we hoped – only a few bogs of doom to catch out unsuspecting front wheels – a dab or two here and there!

20230824-IMG_0142.jpg

At another regroup for cameraman, we spot a crossing path that heads back to the main road – Dunc’s online mappage seems to show it stopping after a short distance – but OS does show it going all the way to the road meeting the entrance to Longclough farm.

20230824-IMG_0139-Pano.jpg

Lots of stops to simply look in awe at the panoramas beautifully lit, and clear air giving rise to a rare glimpse of Snowdonia beyond the Clwyds.

Lamaload is reflecting a red sun, and we descend the final slopes with the last of the light.

20230824-IMG_0152-Enhanced-NR-Pano.jpg

Rural crime team vehicles parked up on Pike road, but we are taking the Smith lane route down to Rainow to get Oakenbank in. Lights on as white nancy is sillouhetted against a darkening sky, a grumpy farmer partway down with a car in the field muttering about his right of way, and then the welcome of the Poachers – with 3 Sheds in residence.

Pumps of doom are popular, although the beardown citrus IPA, and the stout do decent business.

Nut roast for a second week running for El Pres (but he does polish it off eventually!)

The Crew (plus guests) in The Poachers

Pics of evil tups – and much mirth ensuing, plenty of banter – and with Troll being collected he’s making sure he doesn’t miss out on the drinks, he leads the AoE into a second whisky! Pete may be barred from choosing next time – the first had banana notes..ie too young, then he overcorrects with Smokehead which is all nose and no body…but we are having too much fun to care, and also enjoying Adrian (and being careful with our feet with Biscuit under the table).

Cool on the ride home as the clear skies have let all the heat out!

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete & Butty

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Troll, Butty, Stunt

Route: Bolly maze, Middlewood way to poynton coppice, Shrigley road to West gate, climb to the Knoll car park, Gritstone trail to and through Knights Low wood, up the descent to Bowstones, top of Park moor track just inside the wall, Moorside lane, Chapel descent, Shrigley road, Long Lane, Styperson quarries, Sugar lane, Canal, Clarence Mill, Poachers.

Conditions: Fine, dry, very windy

A select group this week with hols and injuries depleting the wider team.

Pete declares a bolly finish, and Stunt suggests a route out to Lyme Park staying low into wind, then getting the assist higher up on the way back.

At the maze – we wait for the man who lives closest to be the last to arrive!

Plenty of leisure cyclists and dog walkers out on the middlewood making the best of fine weather (with some erratic riding to boot). PTD rides with the motor turned off on the flat – “as it’s actually easier as the motor is holding you back on the lower assist level” it makes for pleasant company chatting at an easy pace for the acoustics.

20230817-IMG_0043.jpg

Which is best way through the Park – A:Right up to Knights cottage then round the outside of the wall and into Knights Low wood at the corner or B: Up past the Knott and hang a right just before the car park?

20230817-IMG_0045.jpg

Just as we are about to debate it – Butty arrives (having declared likely pub only). Fresh from hols he has the best local knowledge – and says that it’s clearly B.

Dry rooty ground makes for nice riding, at the wood team E go for the over the top “fun” route, whilst team Acoustic contour round, meeting at the gate to the moor.

Red deer are settled in the grass high up, a couple of riders come past having done the descent, and we climb up past hairy highland cattle chewing the cud, with the wind now showing it’s face.

20230817-IMG_0049.jpg

At the top the trees are singing, a hazy light bathes the moor (whetting the photographers whistle), and Butty startles some skylarks into the air as he sets off on his recommended wall track. He does warn us it’s damp in places!

A narrow doubletrack through marshgrass, there are some very wet spots – slipply logs anyone?

We are soon through the worst, and enjoying flowing trail through a sea of grass rippling in the wind.

There is no way through the wall to cut across to Dale top – but the descent is more of the same – and all the better for it – tricky with limited visibility of the narrow track – and there are some cheekly little drops here and there – with a few rocks in for good measure!

20230817-IMG_2087.jpg

Just one huge ladder stile to get out and onto Moorside lane, some ferrying of the bikes is needed as turning at the top in the wind on a wobbly structure is not the best idea!

20230817-IMG_2090.jpg 20230817-IMG_2095.jpg

Super dry on the Chapel descent, and time for Stypersons (where the locals are sessioning) before route one (via a bit of the canal) to the Poachers.

Three groups of riders tonight – Team Simondo, the Nancies and Us.

Oblivion at 5.5% or the SUP (of doom) win in the Ale stakes, El Pres passes up the opportunity for meat by going the Nut roast, and Stunt does the Nachos – which are definitely not a light option!

An evening of catching up on progress at Troll towers 2 (some serious engineering in them floors!), geeking on inflight assist tuning if you have a Spesh.

Much nostalgia and love for life on the wirral (mostly PTD & Pete!):

Mugged by a seagull
1980s p*rn mags In Birkenhead
Abseiling off Anglican cathedral
Scrap yards in Birkenhead

and a lot of unburdening on life’s current challenges!!

PTD does AoE whisky! We go speyside for a smooth one especially for him – and it’s not half bad.

Howling wind on the way home – storms passing through tomorrow!

TNR 10-08-2023 Reservoir Doogs

Crew: El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Butty, Croxy, Lee, Stunt, G

Sutton Ressie: Doog

Route: Bottom of the zag, Charity, Narnia, cut back to do the cheeky swoopy trails, road to Smithy, across the bottom of the ressie, little climb up to the road, Hanging Gate, Croker Hill, RH side decent to Croker Lane, Chez Doog, Sutton Reservoir.

Conditions: Hot, dry and lots of flying bugs in the forest.

Notes:

Finally a fine evening in prospect – and it would be rude not to go al fresco! Discussions started early the day before, but reports of flymaggedon in the forest suggested more creativity needed. Enter Doog with a generous offer of doing the logistics for a Sutton Reservoir beach pizza, beer and campfire event!

With a meet at 8:30 chez Doog to collect supplies as our target, El pres sets out a route across the forest and over Croker. It’s fair to say that on a warm night there were some slacker voices suggesting it might be a little ambitious, but it did sound a good plan!

Plenty of other riders out, as 3 other middle aged bikers were also meeting at our RV, and headed off just ahead of us, followed rapidly by two younger guys on e hybrids looking a bit out of place in college chic attire and no helmets!

A good night for sheep spotting, as the freshly shorn flocks contentedly grazed lush grass in the evening sunshine (well apart from the dead one in a field between windy ways and walker barn). A lot of Tups out, easily identified by a burly appearance and huge boy bags down past their back knees!

The wisdom of avoiding a forest eating location is vindicated at charity as they crawl all over Butty’s forearms, and carpet the track in places, DEET liberally applied at Narnia gate.

The ongoing route discussion about getting across the forest in time is settled as Butty takes us to the the reverse of the swoopy singletracks that PTD showed us uphill back in June. It’s a smart move (although watch out for the steep exit onto the fireroad part way – El Pres ends up in a small conifer to break his fall)

Having emerged low down on the main track , its straight down the road past the Leathers (busy with many a walker and jiggly jogger) past the ressie and up to the road.

Plenty of time to chat on the climb past the Hanging gate (also busy) and along the ridge before the A54 decent and final climbs to Croker – where G finally catches us up.

A route committee comes to a conclusion that we don’t have time to do the classic down and exit near the Ryles as this would mean a long ride round to Doogs, so we should take the direct route – which no one has done in a long time. Digital mappage is consulted, and we identify the track to take. In the event it’s a proper roadway with footpath permissions, no gates and a smooth rapid ride where we met no-one (or even got barked at by any farm dogs). Popping out onto Leek old road we are a little early, and welcomed by Isla and Eunice and a very happy pooch. We get to meet the pet snails, wear out the pooch playing tug, and chat happily to Eunice. Doog soon arrives with the beer, and the Pizza is delivered soon after that! saying our goodbyes we head down the lane and along the side of the ressie to the “beach” at the end. 9 Pizzas in an IKEA blue bag on one handebar would make a good addition to the cycling world championship events! They all arrived safely 🙂

Excellent they were – and condiment chris excelled himself by having several dips that others donated him!

The ducks -mostly mallards but with one white puddle duck (Lee’s favourite) were happily dabbling nearby – but then came zooming over once the prospect of pizza crust crumbs were on offer.

Magnumesque salted caramel ice cream lollies to follow, and a palate cleansing Mojito to toast Butty’s birthday from Stunt.

Then the important business of making a campfire, sticks are foraged, and Croxy and Stunt use the cardboard as kindling (schoolboy error on wind direction meant a second match was needed!) and soon we have plenty of flame – not that it’s cold.

As the number of empty beer cans goes up, the sun goes down, and in come squadrons of geese returning to roost on the water.

The usual diverse mix of serious discussion and banal banter is as it should be.

Butty brings out a hip flask of scotch, and a very dubious little bottle of “green snot” (fortunately only enough for he and Pete to taste). Doog also breaks out some proper speyside smoothness.

The cloud cover that had been with us for a while breaks up and we get to see some stars before dousing the fire and taking what little litter remained.

A warm ride home (if a little wobbly).

and no bugs !!

Top effort team Doog – our thanks as ever

TNR 3-8-2023 Operation Taxal – Taxes Ops Leader

Crew: Dunc, El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Bern, Stunt, Butty, Lee, G, TJ

Pub: PTD

Route: Rainbow bridge, Redway lane, Poachers Snicket, Blaze Hill, Cheshire Corkscrew, Jenkin Chapel, Pym Chair, Wingather, Taxal Edge, Kettleshulme, Bakestonedale road, Poachers.

Conditions: Dry, mild, bit of breeze, muddy trails in parts.

Notes:

Dunc again sets a route and takes Ops leadership, with a 6pm prompt meet to get to Taxal edge and back in time for food.

Heads counted – and G to catch us up – we depart on schedule, heading for the fastest route to Pym Chair “climb on tarmac” means a Blaze hill ascent!

No time for small talk but straight into the route to get it out of the way.

So far so “on plan”….then we realise we don’t have TJ.

Dunc is perplexed! he counted the right number of heads…ahah Mr Ball did not declare on Whatsapp..so he caused the disruption!

Comms are struggling but G arrives having met TJ on the way and passes on the message that TJ will do his own ride and meet us at the pub. We still feel bad.

The corkscrew is filthy wet, muddy and slippy – Bern collects a bit of shrubbery in his bike on the way down, and we look across to the next big climb.

We do get a hint of wind assist, before cresting and resting at the entrance to the moor.

Despite forecast of showers – we have intermittent sunshine 🙂

The moor rides well apart from a couple of muddy patches, as does the run along the wall.

Dunc has another moment as we think we have lost 3 Sheds!! (the perils of leadership)

He turns up soon enough having gone for a leak and thought we were just doing the wall section!

Even better comms with TJ – he is following behind, so we direct him to an RV in Kettleshulme.

The forecast seems to have put off the climbers – just one group on Wingather, and the soft ground in the woods means even the ec**ts only just make the climb.

Finally Taxal edge – great views, great light and on schedule.

You know it’s a bridleway when there is fresh horse sh1t about 😉 and later there are cows, a walker and then a couple of dogs (very busy!) it’s still a great route.

Talk of extending the ride is futile as we only have half an hour to get to the pub.

We finally rendevous with TJ!

Having done Blaze and Pym already the climb out of Kettleshulme doesn’t seem so bad (other than tired legs) and plenty of fast descending down past the brickworks.

Team e head off to do a cheeky gritstone, sponds, dale top loop, whilst lead riders arrive at 8:40 to claim the table and test the beer! So alls well that ends well as we do get all riders round and home on time.

Southern cross IPA & Haze of Thunder quench the thirst, hearty food replenishes the energy, and stout for pudding. Cosy in the nook with ten folk, some leg room when the early leavers head off, much fun with the BarbieMe app and a very welcome pub visit from PTD with pics of grandson Harry.

AoE this week is a Leffe with Laphroig chaser!

Light rain on the way home as pennance.

Words & Photos by Dunky

Crew: Butty, Troll, TJ ,Dunky, PTD

Route: Bottom of the Zag, Buxton Road Tea room, Errwood descent, The Street, Pym Chair, Cock & Pheasant

Notes

As the crew assembled, news was ‘no room at the inn’ as The Poachers were full, so unable to take the booking, a couple of failed booking attempts elsewhere and eventually a table was secured for five at the Cock & Pheasant.

Time was getting on and an ambitious plan was under threat as a message from Phil to meet at Walker Barn came through.

20230807-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-27 at 20.56.52 (3).jpg

No time to waste, and a strict ‘keep moving, no time to chat’ policy saw us make good time to the tea room  where we shelved the Errwood hall zig zag and shrine ascent plan, for a swifter ‘straight down to the car park’ fast jumpy downhill.

As we regrouped at the top of the zig zag, Butty arrived tentatively nursing one brake on his new shiny e-bike. His front brake wasn’t working at all, turns out a pivot had fallen though and lost a linkage (1/10 shimano).

20230807-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-27 at 20.56.52 (1).jpg

Onwards and the climb up the street was marred with flying bugs trying to get in your ears and eyes and driving me mad, so much so I took to almost sprinting to keep the breeze going to keep them away (2nd fastest Strava time for me).

Every man for himself from Pym chair to the Cock as we arrive in the nick of time for our 8:45 booking.

The last two pies were bagged, Fishcakes were exquisite and generally good food reviews all round (better than expected after our last visit).

Neck oil on draft and a keen last orders meant we were on our way by 11, but not after a wide ranging agenda was covered including:

The current situation in Israel

Lack of science based medicine upto mid 1800s

Catholic church’s treatment of Galileo and Bacon

Sinead O’Connor

Transcontinental race

W&nkers who use the unethical closing of their bank account to further their public exposure.

And very little Ribaldry (who was the catalyst missing this week I wonder?)

Words by Pete , Photos by Dr S and Lee

Crew : Pete, TJ, Lee, Butty, El Pres, Dr S, 3sheds

Route : Bottom of the Zag – Charity & Ext  – Tea Rooms  – Semi Danebower – diverse descents – Cumberland Clough – Standing Stone – LHS descent – Sutton Hall

Conditions: Excellent , a bit cool by the time we reached the Cat & Fiddle

Notes

A simple forest circuit was anticipated – but when we stopped at the top of charity ….Lee said “shall we do The Cat & Cumberland”-  no one argued .

I must say I was initially not too keen on that tarmac drag up to the tea rooms , but it wasn’t too bad tonight .

Anyway ….. despite the good weather chazza was wet for the first time in ages …mud on my legs …what a novel concept !

20230803-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-21 at 00.33.50.jpg

The extension (proper name Oven Lane) was gnarly as hell …I have to confess a tactical “controlled off “ part way down.

The wind was light and a couple of paragliders were making the most of it up near the Tea Rooms and Shining Tor .

Extra layers were donned at the Cat but we pushed onwards . I am not sure who decided on “the full monty” descent of Chumby (definition : taking the footpath route to the waterfall in CC , avoiding the A54 stretch ) but it leads to a choice point .

20230803-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-21 at 17.41.22.jpg

Chris and I bailed left , the rest followed 3sheds on the “straight down” route .

At Standing stone we decided to go down the left hand side, and the crew got a bit split up . TJ and I ended up bumping into Ricky , his lady Sue and a couple of his mates.

On arrival at Sutton Hall we had menus pushed under our noses, and choices had to be made quickly .

Solar Flare tasted good and punched above its weight . 4.7% I think. Quite a few were ordered . Three left for the AOE with the dram which has the whiff of TCP (or Izal medicated)

At the bar : Ruth

Route : Bolly Bridge – Lyme Park West to East  – Bowstones – Bakestonedale Wood Car Park – Spuley Lane – The Poachers – Kerridge Bridleway – Tarmac to Macc – Five Clouds

Butty shot

Butty turns up with another E-bike ! (Has he been robbing banks ?)

Croxy is out for the second week running – he seems to have abandoned Golf and returned to the TNR fold

Butty shot

El Pres finally returns to the TNR , and , despite the murmuring last week, no coup has materialised.

A good view of a hovering Kestrel as we gather at Bowstones.

Kestrel

Library shot

Here , Lee disappears off across the GT route to rendezvous with Smiffy Steve …the remaining crew then descend  straight to the car park/lay by above the Brickworks …without a Dale Top visit . It feels like ages since we have done this little descent – it ain’t steep but it is quite fun picking out the right path . Butty finds the double gate much easier with his new, lighter E-steed !

20230713-IMG_1332.jpg

As we wait for Lee & Steve at the Poachers corner ..the inevitable happens : a cheeky half . A fine red IPA at 6% ..and something a little lighter for others.

20230713-IMG_1346.jpg

But Five Clouds is our destination ! A short but steep tarmac climb up Nancyside Lane to North End Farm (glad it was just a half !) …then the bridleway to Lidgetts .

20230720-f31628e4-0f01-49ee-865b-8418cbf11edc.jpg

Lee shot

Here it feels like its “everyman for himself” until we gather at Five Clouds . It is not too busy, the weather is good . Pizza has been ordered , somebody gets the beer in….and we enter the banter zone .

El Pres agrees to create one of his wondrous , magical spreadsheets to show us who owes who what ..what would we do without him ?

Good beer (Steady Rolling Man, Retro Racer and a naughty strong pudding beer)  , good nosh, good company ….all for under £25

Ruth arrives to ferry home our TNR Troll less the pleasures of Five Clouds get the better of him (and the rest of us) .

A Lee Wadsworth operational planning & photo session evening

20230709-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-06 at 18.52.36.jpg

I had requested a moderate local ride (after a busy Wednesday) , but we ended up doing a respectable 2hrs + hilly circuit at a sensible pace .

20230709-WhatsApp Image 2023-07-06 at 21.25.00 (3).jpg

With Croxy and The Doog in attendance it felt a bit like old times , the weather was dull but dry and a great temperature for riding . With the veil of cloud felt like someone had “turned down the colour on the world” a bit .

Raven on the Park Moor Fence (version 2)

Library shot from a few weeks back

It is always, imho, good to venture up to the Gritstone Trail – Sponds – Bowstones – Park Moor territory . It was fairly dry and Phil suggested we take the rollercoaster path by the wall . Marvellous . The thistles are all high and in bloom. We could see some Red Deer over the massive drystone wall which borders Park Moor.

Red Deer on Park Moor 2

Library shot from a few weeks back

The Poachers was strangely quiet until about 10am when the Nancies arrived en masse (15 plus of ‘em). They had been on a car-assist trip to The Roaches . Two more groups of locals turned up and suddenly the place felt absolutely packed.

The £7 pump of doom now has a new friend : The £6 pump of slightly-less-doom 🙂 . It was a cloudy IPA which was allegedly 3.7% but tasted stronger. A second, well..it was just mandatory ….

20230706-IMG_9748-Enhanced-NR.jpg

Alex arrives , the sensible ones slope off after a moderate amount of beer. A small, but perfectly formed AOE enters the Leffe Zone .

TNR 29-07-2023 Banjo BBQ

Crew: Troll, Slim, 3 Sheds, PTD, Dunc, Butty, Stunt

Route: Lask Edge, The Cloud, Biddulph bridleway, Biddulph Grange, Hurst Road, Eliases Lane, Chez Troll.

Conditions: Warm and sunny

Notes:

As planned last week we venture to sunny Staffordshire to do a figure of eight loop of the Cloud and Mow Cop.

Vehicle assist to the start point at Phil & Ruths for most, but Ebike direct for PTD!

A second outing of the year for Stunts steel rigid semi fat bike as there has not been any maintenance time for full suss with the naughy moving bearings from last weeks DNF.

Roads and lanes North (and back into Cheshire) to the Cloud, with uphill rooty singltrack under trees is all climbable, then onto the rocky sandy moor (where there is some pushing).

Views at the trig are excellent – with a fair few other bikers, walkers and dogs also enjoying a fine evening.

Chunky rocky drops on the way down which need a bit of speed to get the flow (not all of us succeeded).

Then a fantastic swoopy downhill track through the woods – screechiest brakes of the year award to Stunt!

Perfect conditions – big smiles 🙂

A mix of lanes and bridleways take us to Biddulph and the start of the “killer mile” up to Mow Cop.

Whilst debating if we have enough time, a young lad on his bike is out practicing wheelies, and admiring our bikes – encouragement and some fatherly advice on helmets is dispensed in the nicest possible way.

It seems we don’t have time, so we head back past Biddulph Grange gardens and up to the building site to inspect Troll’s big project. Much admiration for the dressed stone and engineering that has gone into getting the lower of three stories built into the side of a hill with streams on both sides. There is a lot of land too – and we get to see a bit of it by hacking some paths through the bracken.

A last climb back up to Hot lane, and a joint of slow cooked lamb crisping the coating on a spit.

Lack of lager shocker for 3 Sheds – and he goes totally off piste with a 6.8% stout

Beer, fire pit lit, and then an asian style cucumber chilli cold soup, and amazing asian rice salad (TNR first – the boys went back for more), then melt in your mouth lamb in homemade pitta’s.

It starts to cool, and we get an impromptu Ali G competition between PTD & Butty.

Extra special celebration for PTD with news of Harry (Shaun and Laura’s baby) born in the early hours. We We toast the proud parents and grandparents with Wireworks whisky – which has a superb mouthfeel and flavour!

As the light finally fades, the growlers of ale empty, and the firepit flames flicker, the day trippers depart.

The overnighters slip into the whisky zone to a mellow soundtrack into the wee hours.

Restorative tea and brekkies the next day after a sound sleep.

Thanks to our amazing hosts – and yes Phil we will do Mow Cop next time (but we need to start earlier) 😉

TNR 22-6-2023 Buttys & Beer Picnic

Crew: Butty, Troll, Slim, Doog, 3 Sheds, PTD, TJ, Stunt, Dunc, Lee, Steve

Picnic: G & Sarah

Route: Muller Corner, Zag, Teggs Nose, Smithy, Forest Chapel road, Fire road and singletracks to Witches cottage, reverse Narnia, Charity, extension, Standing stone, Ferriser, Standing stone.

Conditions: Warm & dry – a bit buggy later.

Notes:

Butty floats a bring your own butty’s & beer night with van logistics assist and it tempts out a decent crew!

At MC the Buttmobile arrives with Pete and TJ and coolboxes to take provisions, he then drives to Standing Stone and rides down to the Leathers to meet up with us. Troll also parks his van there and follows suit. Lee and Steve declare late faffing.

In the meantime we ride to Teggs where we are not the only folk thinking it’s a good night for a picnic, luckily they are well off the track, and the main face only has a couple of walkers near the top. Dry and loose means different line strategies to normal – but maybe after a few weeks this is coming more naturally?

Still the smell of burning brakes wafts at the bottom carpark.

Plenty of riders out and about in the forest, with more than one group assembling at the Leathers.

Emma pops out of the pub (walking the dog!) to say hi, comms with Lee and Steve arranges a standing stone RV.

PTD takes charge to take us up a downhill singltrack, which is more rideable than expected, and very pleasant under the shady trees with a gentle breeze. We traverse a little way along the fire road at the top, and then get a couple of swoopy sections before arriving out on the main track to witches cottage.

It’s fun, but we also see the benefit of long trousers at this time of year.

Part way along reverse narnia Stunt gets some worring clonking from his main pivot – and the rear triangle seems to be sliding off the bearings towards the drive side. Engineering expertise from 3 sheds declares it too risky to keep riding it – so we divert to standing stone and the butty toolbox.

Rider stays to attempt a fix, Lee and Steve arrive, and the functioning bikes head out towards Ferriser for some more fun.

“Control to Flamingo where are you?” “Zulu reporting in from control 6 and on way back” “Come in Paddy!” Scouting orientieering with radios is being monitored by two leaders in a pickup (aka control) whilst Stunt fails to repair the misaligned frame.

Soon the riders return, and G & Sarah (plus dog) arrive too, G carrying 2 sticks to hit Stunt’s bike with 🙂

Picnic blankets, folding chairs and a “Bed bench” are deployed in the meadow, beers are opened, quiche is sliced, pork pies are smeared in mustard and the world is a better place.

The Deya from the Trolls magic keg is very good, the Toast IPA (made from unsold bread) is not one to buy again :-(. Some layering up as it cools off, and jungle formula or smidge essential as the bugs come out to play!

A sliver of moon and a bright planet the only heavenly bodies visible in the sky as a day off the solstice it’s only dim not dark.

Stunts cadges a lift home from a generous troll, PTD offers whisky at the Shubberies as we have a whisky fail event at the picnic!! But the van drivers (and passengers) politely decline.

A fine evening (and an annoyingly good advert for ebikes)

Next week Banjo country?
