TNR 30-05-2024 Biddle Banjo BBQ

Crew: Troll, El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Bern, Lee, Dunc, Butty, Stunt

Biddle HQ: Ruth

Route: A meander down the lanes to the back of the Cloud, under the trees ascent to the top, rocky then bermy descents back to the road. Staffordshire way, lanes round behind Biddulph Grange country park, visit to Cabbage cottage, back to Hot Lane for BBQ.

Conditions: Cloudy and breezy with a decent rainshower post the Cloud.

Notes:

The Troll has invited us to his for a ride and BBQ as his birthday event! a good sized crew turn out for the legendary hospitality and a change of riding scenery.

A decent effort all round to be riding away past the clutter of Leonards Farm at 6:15, with a target to be back for 9. Troll warns us that rain is expected but should be done by 8 ish.

Fine views from Lask Edge Road (trig point in the field is at 336m) with a panorama of the Roaches, Shutlingsloe and Shining Tor to the East, and Mow Cop, the Mid Cheshire Ridge, and the Welsh borders to the West.

Fine flowers in the meadows, and fresh growth in the hedgerows curling out to snag those who get too close.

The ascent to the Cloud is a meandering shared trail that is rooty, muddy but totally rideable and a very nice climb – if a touch soft in places..and watch out for the low branches in places!

When we break cover to the heathland, the sandy/rocky narrow trail is far less forgiving, so some pushing here and there until the last bit to the Trig.

More great views – and a big talking point is the wall of grey about to engulf Macclesfield! The wind direction where we are stood suggests it will miss us, but then Butty points out that the clouds are moving in a different vector..

Some local riders on bigger rigs come up, and after a brief chat they head down the rocky route.

We follow soon after – and find it’s not a flowy as we remember – a distinct need to use the sides more or commit to drops then rocks.

Far more fun is the purpose built trail in the woods – swoopy berms, flowy drops and lots of fun! Even with the odd semi submerged section, and some slippy roots in places it’s still fantastic.

Whist we regrouped partway down, Lee had consulted his weather app and told us confidently that we were safe from rain.

By the time we were at the bottom of the next section, we could hear the gentle patter of raindrops on the leaf canopy, and as we headed down some lanes to get onto the Staffordshire way, we needed to put on waterproofs. Looking to right some very dark clouds were overtaking us!

We’ll be fine under the trees say’s Phil – and it does give a decent amount of cover, we pass a guy practicing his Rapping skills, and a slightly glum couple out walking in gym gear realizing that they are going to get damp!

This triggers 3 Sheds to reminice on what features he looks for in the landscape when on a walk, and he’s not the only one. Opportunity would be a fine thing.

Time and weather dampen any enthusiasm to extend the loop, so we swing East, get some tour guide patter on the history of the Biddle halls, and make a stop at Cabbage Cottage to see progress.

A fine construction it is, we admire the stonework, the pallets of Stafforshireshire Blue tiles ready to begin affixing to the roof as soon as the inset solar panels are fitted next week.

A slightly flexy ladder leads up the scaff to the roofline, affords good views over the trees, and a closeup of the Green Man gable stone.

Inspection complete, and skies clearing, time for the last climb back up to Hot Lane and refreshments!

Ruth has already lit the firepit, and the BBQ, so with a fine cloudy citrusy ale in hand we can admire the stunning sunset unfolding in the West.

Nibbles include “baked beans on a stick” – not the heinz variety but huge creamy butterbeans in tasty sauce. There is also some warm bread and spicy dip.

We get to sample some Keeved cider – really nice.

The main event is sliced BBQ’s kebab in pitta’s with superb salad, fantastic falafels, and a wonderful chicken ,rice , aubergine and tomato fried concoction that would make a lebanese style kitchen proud!

To a great playlist we sit round the firepit and enjoy the big sky views, spot stars, planes (id’d with Flight tracker app), and satellites. Talk of a chinook going over Poynton and Cheadle yesterday. Lees next bike trip options…it all depends on the weather, and his DuoLingo skills! Also a new unit of firewood – 1 bin lid’s worth (good use of bin lid Bern!)

With the 5l cask empty, we get some random tins from the frige of doom, and enjoy sampling those before the pudding stout comes out.

The day trippers soon depart, and the overnighters get started on the Tamavulin.

Tis well past the witching hour before we head to bed.

The next morning a hearty breakfast of Oatcakes with cheese, bacon, black pudding, sausage, egg and tomatos is being rustled up by our hosts, with tea and coffee being dispensed liberally.

Sunny and clear – more features on the horizon are being discussed – a big white towerlike structure Wrexham way, something akin to a big sail near Liverpool, and closer to the house – the wonky trailer in the field (Quirky Calendar opportunity – the trailer in all seasons?)

A fine do, a happy Troll, extra special thanks to Ruth for having us and being chief house elf.

TNR 23-05-2024 Low Cloud High Spirits

20240523-IMG_6044iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Dr S, Troll, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: Lee, Croxy, Butty, Ruth

Route: Rainbow Bridge, Cenotaph, Lidgetts Lane, back of Kerridge, Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to layby, Cat mine diorama, descent to Moorside lane, Birchencliffe, Shrigley Lane, Long Lane, Beeston brow, Poachers.

Conditions: Low cloud, occasional light rain, very wet trails.

With Buxton weather quoting “Wow 55mm of rain in 36 hours” and grey skies the morning TNR planning chat was where can we ride that is not underwater!

Pete suggests a route that has plenty of bail out options, and with reminders to wrap up warm – it’s 9 degrees – but will be cooler and windier on the hills, we gather six riders for our weekly ritual.

No beetle releasing at the rendevous this week, but we get Dunc still on the rigid Fortitude having had sweet dusty gravel trails in wales at the weekend. Stunt has also stuck with his “swampthing” again and team tythy are keeping it old skool with real steel and no suspension.

A grand bit of fencing and gravel is newly installed from the gate at the canal to the double track – then its splashing through the puddles, and looking across to see Kerridge Ridge in the cloud!

It’s not actually raining that much, but everything is soaking wet and the air is cold and clammy.

The sheep on the back of Kerridge don’t seem too bothered though, and maybe the extra rain has washed the worst of the mud away on the trail.

We are under strict orders not to divert into the Robin Hood (two weeks in a row would cause a dangerous precedent) – the thought of having to endure Rainow Ukele seemed to do the trick and we were straight through to do Oakenbank.

20240523-IMG_6038iPhone 14 Pro

Some route debate concludes that we should head up – but only to the “lowest high bit”. Once off the road at the layby (and after a brief faff from Stunt to sort jumpy rear mech) there is a short lived attempt to get up the beavers creeks descent in one go (Dunc reminded us that he and G did manage it many years ago on lightweight carbon steeds).

20240523-IMG_6040iPhone 14 Pro

Soon we are in the cloud, a solitary tree looms in the field to our left with more soggy sheep gently grazing. The scene brings out some poetic ramblings inspired by radio 4 quiz shows (none of which i can recall), we show Dr S the diorama inside the cat mine trig shaped monument (Pete can see it glint in the sunshine from his house on a good day). Today we are wiping off the moisture from the perspex to see the little scene inside! (Photo above)

Tis a wet grass and slippy rock descent, then a good wheel wash to remove sheep poo and mud from tyres down Birchencliffe. A time check and the slight increase in the rain drives a consensus to miss our Stypersons and head straight down Long lane and minimise the climb to the Pub.

20240523-IMG_6050iPhone 14 Pro

All evening we have seen lush growth coming at us from the hedgerows and trailsides, but the descent to Beeston Brow sees very low branches which rearrange the odd helmet on the way down!

20:20 hrs we are locking up in the Poachers, and we seem to have timed it well, no other bikers in, and we get our food and beer order in just before others arrive.

Nancies didn’t ride shocker! although the other little group has also braved the elements.

A night of many pub only attendees – Lee gets extra points for riding here (and getting the worst of the weather too), Croxy drove and arrives with tales of Snowdonia multi day walking, Butty brings ribaldry, and Ruth grace and charm.

Dr S has seen Eric Clapton a the new Co Op live arena – apparently very nice and easy to get to via the tram from Piccadilly station. There are co-op shops there and you can get a sandwich for a very reasonable price! Clapton is 79 now, and his warm up act Andy Fairweather Low “oh I know him he’s played with everyone – and had that one hit…what’s it called?” 73 was very impressive and natty in a pin stripe suit whilst belting out the rock legends on his electric guitar! ( later google tells us that Amen Corner were no 1 in 1969 with “If paradise was half as nice”)

With election talk Count Binface gets a mention – we like to keep it serious 😉

We had no eBikers with us tonight, but i have to report there was talk of the devil at the table!!

The 6% wincle dark ale becomes pudding beer for the bad ones, and a mini AoE goes Leffe.

It’s raining harder on the way home than on the main ride, soggy three wrings

Next week we are in Banjo country hosted by Troll, fingers crossed for better weather.

TNR 16-05-2024 Slack n Moist

20240516-IMG_5948iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Dunc, Slim, Stunt

Route: Rainbow bridge, Redway, “under Nancy”, Waulkmill wood, back of Kerridge, Rainow, Robin Hood, Oakenbank, Poachers.

Conditions: Warm, humid and moist.

Notes:

The big lump of wet stuff on the radar moving across the country for most of the day had deterred many, but with a deferred start to co-incide with the back edge clearing us, the four riders assembled in good order on a damp middlewood way. Stunt giving the semi-fat rigid Marin an outing instead of the KTM.

Stunt suggests a slackish route with a cheeky Robin Hood stop, no one is arguing, even Dunc – who is saving himself for a big Gravel weekend in mid Wales.

TNR first as El Pres releases some blue beetles into the undergrowth, having removed them from his tree hugging nursery where they were causing issues.

Pete has set an alarm on his phone to remind him to give El Pres a tool he has borrowed to sort his rear shock, very organised…although El Pres claims his tool is now redundant (phnarr phnaar) as the design of the fox shock has changed.

New fencing around the gate at the Canal to the double track, but nothing new in the huff and puff to get up Nancyside lane to the top, especially on such a humid evening.

Variation on the descent by going all the way down and then up Waulkmill wood – which is short but not without challenge – no one cleans it in one go, but tubby tyres show their worth. Photo above !

Kerridge is wet grass, wet slabs, and slightly muddy, with the field crossings hard work on the climbs to gates, Dunc has to stop and de-layer due to overheating!

The slope of doom is not too bad, but the stream crossing muddy patch is much deeper than expected – you needed momentum to get through without a dab.

20240516-IMG_5949iPhone 14 Pro

The most dangerous part of the ride is parking the bikes on the decking at the Robin Hood, so slippy that the bikes almost don’t stand up!

Our arrival has co-incided with Rainow Ukele setting up, so we hasten to the back room to sip our pint of Boltmaker and reflect on last weeks bad behavoir which Chris missed, and the impressive exploits of Harry running all the Snowdonian peaks over 100 miles non stop!

Back out for a final climb up Oakenbank, a quick stop to take in murky views of gently steaming woods, then a rapid descent – new hazard at the end with a vehicle parked with it’s back end partly across the track. With the sun getting low and temperature dropping a hint – a hint of mist in the hollows!

Plenty of bikes parked up in the Poachers garden, and a warm welcome as always. Lightweight 3.7% Faithless the ale of choice, and in the spirit of healthy options no red meat is being consumed!! Three Hallouimi’s and a Scampi.

Wide ranging debates on reliability of vehicles – Mk4 golfs and 2010 Audi A3’s getting high scores, lightbulb replacement (too often needed on a Mk6 golf) and newfangled LED headlights will need whole unit replacement it seems. The benefits of dog ownership, the “joys” of offspring learning to drive/being able to drive.

Duns shows us the MRI scans of his knee – that white bit on the left hand side should be on the right – but its now out of the way so i may be able to get running again soon…fingers crossed.

On a temperate evening there was no Whisky (we tried to calculate how much we had imbibed last week…and it made for shocking numbers), a gentle Leffe finish instead before settling up and wending our way home…and to ponder why was Pete’s bag so heavy??

TNR 09-05-2024 Campfire Capers

20240509-IMG_5854iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: Slim, Troll, Dunc, Lee, Smithy, Butty, 3 Sheds, TJ, Stunt

Fireside: Doog, Ruth

Route: Bottom of the Zag, Charity, Swoopy bits to Narnia, Charity, Extension, Standing stone, Back of the Moon, Shutlingsloe steps, Standing Stone, Forest Chapel, Charity, Campfire.

Conditions: Warm, Sunny and not too buggy.

Notes:

With fair weather upon us again, the ops team declare a bring you own food campfire finish at the original location.

At the Zag, Smithy shows off his Orbea ebike – with cunning use of tape and old inner tubes to enhance the mudproofing. TJ takes it for a spin – is he in the market for an E to take to the Alps?

Slim arrives a bit late – but with the effective excuse that he’s just stashed the beer for later – no there are no complaints.

Stunt proposes an out and return route to minimse the climb later on, and off we go.

We don’t get far before the group stops to check out a bird, after much debate (and googling) the raptor happily perched on some wires is determined to be a Buzzard.

The lambs in the fields are getting bigger, and at the gambolling stage, and pace is variable on the climb, as it’s warm, plus we are carring larger packs than normal.

20240509-IMG_5833iPhone 14 Pro

There are still plenty of soft patches at the side of charity, and the bombhole of doom has only one dry line, and jeapordy galore. TJ and Stunt both emerge with mud on legs – and Stunt was only walking it!!

20240509-IMG_5835iPhone 14 Pro

The swoopy bits are good if you can avoid the boggy bits. At the Narnia track a lone rider whizzes past and then takes a right just back towards charity. Smithy and Butty head down to investigate – and they are left to find their way back whilst the rest carry on down Chazza and then the Extension.

20240509-IMG_5840iPhone 14 Pro

Tis standing stone before we are all reunited, and Dunc has caught us up, with tales of weird bluetooth connectivity to christmas trees!?

20240509-IMG_5844iPhone 14 Pro

Controversy as Stunt takes us up the Back of the Moon to mutterings of “it’s better the other way round” some valiant uphill efforts from Lee and 3 Sheds. Once on the ridge the views are great, the moor is very rideable, with only a couple of squelchy patches where the green mesh runs up towards the slabbed path.

Smiles post the steps descent, and with low sun making for nice pics, a couple of subgroups emerge, one cracks on to get the campfire prepped, the other…taking pics!

20240509-IMG_5846iPhone 14 Pro

Lee and Smithy head home – to save themselves for the Macc Beer festival tomorrow night!

No one has had a fire here for quite a while, and we have to find firestones afresh. But there are some great stump seats, one even with a free penknife attached ;-).

Soon flames are a crackling, the stash is recovered, and Doog is getting us started with Whisky! He’s kept the big 60 under the radar, but now has a fine bottle of Cardhu to celebrate. At the other end of the spectrum the Troll is trying to convince us of the gourmet delights of gazpacho from a bottle….there are no takers.

20240509-IMG_5855iPhone 14 Pro

Plenty of interest in the pocket meat and selection of mini savoury bites and pork pies that become an improptu charcuterie board.

Dunc has foil wrapped food warming up by the fire, and there is keg delivery from Ruth rumoured.

Compared to last week we are midge free, with almost no bugs!!

The beers flow, the sky darkens, bants and musing get more rambling – concluding that all TNR situations can be solved by the application of a suitable stick 🙂 oh and woodfire warmed pies and pasties are ace with a hint of smokiness!!

20240509-IMG_5857iPhone 14 Pro

Ruth arrives – to be crowned 1st Queen of the campfire, and Troll dispenses cloudy fruity Rivington ale (after a couple of attempts to set up the keg – only involving minor spraying)

Much mirth at the telling of a legendary family mispronunciation of the Long Mynd…”long minge” ..

There are many more whiskies to be consumed, with Stunt having brought some Oban, and Dunc some Tagavulin…and somewhere along the way there was Leffe too.

It is rumoured that some have entered the “I love you guys” level of fraternal booziness…

Tis well past the witching hour when the AoE hard core have finally emptied Doog’s bottle, thankfully found some spare camelback water to douse the fire, and find we they are a little over refreshed and rather giggly…

Doog has a wee wobble on the first descent, Dunc is nearly knocked off by the sneaky kerb just past McD’s, and then admits to two further offs between the Tythy shops and home.

Thankfully the three rings protocol confims we all arrived home in one piece (although Dunc’s garmin case might need a close look at).

Cracking campfire classic TNR

TNR 02-05-2024 A Glorious Evening

20240502-IMG_5753iPhone 14 Pro

Words and pics by Pete

Crew : El pres , Troll, Pete , Kersh, Dunc, PTD, Simon, TJ , 3sheds

Pub: Butty, Ruth

Conditions : Dry and pleasant . Great sunset

Route : Zag bottom – Saddlers Way – Bottoms Reservoir – Leathers – Forest LHS ascent – Half-a-Charity  – The “Rad Bit”   – Narnia entrance – finish Charity – Extension – St Stone – Dan’s Bench – Cheeky PTD route down – St Dunstan’s

Notes

As it was almost May 4th Chris designated this TNR as “Mr President’s birthday ride”. His presidency decreed that we should gather at Zag and go forest-ish , via a favourite circuit of his.

20240502-IMG_5714iPhone 14 Pro

This involved dropping down the Saddlers way cobbles .  I still haven’t got the rocky bit at the top nailed, I need lessons from 3sheds or PTD . I arrived at the end of SW to discover the area had just been renamed “The Shunting Yard” as Paul had managed to career into the Troll . There was no blood , but he is muttering something about PTD causing PTSD ?.

A pleasant but uneventful winch up to the Leathers and onward climbing up the LHS and on to Charity .

20240502-IMG_5720iPhone 14 Pro

The weather is fairly stonking ! And this gives us all a sense of “take it easy and lets have a chilled-out ride” .

20240502-IMG_5724iPhone 14 Pro

Part way along charity I think PTD seized the moment and stole the route leadership from El Pres . We hopped the wire and made a long overdue return to the Devil’s Bomb hole and ensuing “rad” paths through the trees . In glorious light . I believe the yoof element would say “Sick, Dude” at this point .

20240502-IMG_5726iPhone 14 Pro copy 20240502-IMG_5731iPhone 14 Pro

From, here onwards , as we got to Narnia entrance and then re-joined chazza , it felt like the crew got split up a bit. TJ and I at least did the Oven Lane section  – dry and gnarly,  I have to confess to a dab or two.

Onward – I have a small,  but essential,  stash of cups and English Mustard to deliver to Dan’s Bench . Can’t delay the celebrations planned for Nessit.

20240502-IMG_5750iPhone 14 Pro

TJ and I arrive as the crew are nicely silhouetted against a backdrop of the setting sun and a patterned sky. Pork pies are being dished out and it is me that has the Colmans ! (Chris had earlier confessed by WhatsApp that his household only had French Mustard ! )

20240502-IMG_5743iPhone 14 Pro copy

As I had guessed correctly, the birthday quaff of choice was Negronis with plenty of ice. Bloomin’ Marvellous ! I think we will always be remembering Chris’s Mum (Jean) this way ! Two bits of pork pie each as well !

The vicious midge are the only fly in the ointment ! PTD leads us off on some madness route that finds me and TJ well behind and walking down bits …but its hard to get upset when a ride and an evening have been as good as this. And the light of the sunset was perfect as we wind your way down through the trees.

The Dunny has become the new Langley pub of choice . Good food, ok beer,  and a five star service from Phil the Barman . We end up having the place to ourselves .

20240502-IMG_5757iPhone 14 Pro

Butty turns up and thankfully is looking a lot better

Our new “axis of evil” drink has become a half a Guinness with a Courvoisier chaser (Thanks Lee, it has your trademark on it now) . But after only two beers I think our axis is no longer qualifying as fully evil .

Ruth arrives to collect Mr Troll . Alas , he has become a forgetful lad ….20 mins after they depart I get a call from Ruth asking of his rucksack and helmet are still in the bar ..to much mirth from those of us who are left . Fortunately they are and Butty delivers them safely to Barracks Lane .

Its almost midnight by the time the last of us leave ….and two badger sightings on my ride back to Bollingtonia .

TNR 25-04-2024 Shrine Pilgrims

20240425-IMG_5541iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Simon, Dunc & Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Dr S, Dunc, G, Stunt

Route: Top of Bull Hill Lane, Tea rooms, Stakeside, Shooters Clough, Shrine climb, Pym’s chair, Jenkin Chapel, Ewrin lane, Blaze Hill, Poachers

Conditions: Cold, Still, Hail/Sleet showers.

Notes:

Stunt declares a Goyt route with a Poachers finish. The weather is still not clement enough for some of our brethren, but we have six riders this week.

Scrutineering of El Pres’s new rear tyre (he’s stuck with Schwalbe – but a proper folding tubeless ready one). A welcome arrival of Dr S sporting red and black kit to match his red and black bike. New rear mudguard looks a neat design!

With G running late, and on an E powered chase we head off.

IMG_8112

Simon’s photo

There are some breaks in the clouds after the showers earlier in the day, and plenty to see on the climb from lambs in the fields, patches of sunlight on hills, to Short eared owl hunting. There are skylarks singing, curlews crying, and if it wasn’t so darn cold it would be a beautiful evening!

20240425-IMG_5521iPhone 14 Pro

At the tearooms we can see parts of the north wales coast! but to our right dark skies suggest that we may be in for a shower soon!

IMG_8121

Simon’s photo

Stakeside is suprisingly dry – and a great downhill as a result. At the entrance to Shooters clough we can see hail coming our way, and don extra waterproofs whilst G catches us up.

The wet winter seems to have washed most of the mud off Shooters clough, and this too is in great condition!

20240426-IMG_5582

Dunc’s photo

The steps down to the stream by Errwood have taken some serious punishment though, and they will be needing repair in a couple of places soon.

The ascent to the shrine is now tricky with sleet making the ground wet and slippy, still it’s rideable in lots of sections.

20240426-IMG_5585

Dunc’s photo

We head inside the Shine to escape the precipitation, and Stunt lays out a birthday feast of Bourbon and Pork Pies (with Mustard from Pete). It’s a special place, and folks have come from far and wide to find it, and often leave momentos. We make our own small offering before heading out.

20240425-IMG_5552iPhone 14 Pro

The skies have cleared, it’s not to far to Pym’s chair, and as we crest we are treated to a bright orange stripe across the sky! The pictures probably don’t do it justice, sharp sillouhettes on the horizon, sun glinting off the Dee estuary, and shafts of light angling from the heavens.

20240425-IMG_5560iPhone 14 Pro

Spirits high (if legs a bit tired) we head down at speed, grind up to Ewrin lane (The dead mans stone is on the right as you ascend just after the first farm gate). Descending blaze hill the warm lights of bollingtonia are twinking in the valley.

We discover that Dr S has followed G up the cheshire corkscrew (they were both pushing – too slippy even with E power)

20240425-IMG_5581iPhone 14 Pro

A warm welcome awaits in the Poachers, with Doubtless the ale of choice, Pie the pick of the food choices, and amazing videos of sealions and sharks in the galapagos from Dr S!

Dunc is jealous of those with smug jackets/gilets – he’s going to need a bigger backpack!

Tales of Schwalbe comms, victim blaming seems to be their first pitch!

The “Strong Mild” dark beer is pudding, and is so good a second is needed (in lieu of whisky)

Dr S is floating the idea of a TNR long weekend in the UK – watch this space.

A classic TNR evening, but bring on the warmer weather!!

TNR 18-04-2024 Three tie wraps and a prayer

20240418-IMG_5408iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Troll, G, Stunt

Pub: Dunc, Ruth

Route: Bottom of Zag, Zag, Teggs, Leathers, Witches cottage, Hacked way lane, Chazza, Forest Chapel, Leathers.

Conditions: Cold, damp, miserable.

Even the most stiff upper lipped chap might now be getting mildy annoyed at the persistent rain, cold and general grimness of what is allegedly “Spring” with winter like conditions for yet another Thursday night.

Despite this a core of riders assembled at Backeddisbury lane for a forestish loop where the trails are generally well drained, and with even Teggs covered by low cloud – the route options are quite limited.

20240418-IMG_5394iPhone 14 Pro

G arrives on time shocker! and what is this, the e machine is different, shiny Whyte and new. Lighter and more MTB like than the previous “Moto” style iteration, it is indeed a nice looking bike (and not that much heavier than some of our acoustic sussers – so very liftable over stiles!).

It’s the inaugural ride for the new steed, at the other end of the spectrum Pete is discussing replacement rear shock bolt(bush?) after a decade of service on the JPS special orange five, and Stunt shows the tie wrap around his main pivot bolt – which is badly worn but does not seem to be available as a replacement part (much threadlock used to hold it in).

Bike geekery over, it’s time to ride (too cold & wet to faff about), and we opt to to the Zag and head into Teggs on the main path given that there are not likely to be many dog walkers about in this weather.

On that score we only saw two hardy ladies who gave us a friendly welcome as fellow nutters out in the grim weather.

The Teggs descent was best tackled taking lines on the rocky bits – as anything remotely green was soft and slimy!

The Shrubberies is coming along nicely it seems – Doors and windows in evidence! 🙂

We drop into the Leathers and order food for later, then back out to do our Forest loop.

Some tree felling on the RHS of the track up to Witches cottage, not wholesale clearance, more some thinning (so far).

Some lung busting effort needed on Hacked Way lane (or some e assist!) before tackling Charity.

20240418-IMG_5400iPhone 14 Pro

Regrouping at the top of Chazza, G asks how many are tubeless with Troll admitting that even with his new rear tyre he still has a tube, El Pres glances at his own rear tyre and curses loudly – he was thinking what is that big slug doing on my wheel…when it dawns on him that it is a black inner tube hernia of impressive proportions!

20240418-IMG_5404iPhone 14 Pro

The tyre has come away from the bead (yet again) – No BANG this time, but a third identical failure from three new tyres is suggesting a root cause. However we need to get him to the pub, a short discussion opts for the simplest and quickest solution (it’s not a night to be faffing in the cold and wet). A plastic patch on the outside of the tyre held in place by two tie wraps.

20240418-IMG_5406iPhone 14 Pro

With off road both ways, we opt for the main chazza descent (El Pres to walk the chunky bits) then road back from Forest chapel.

20240418-IMG_5409iPhone 14 Pro

It survives charity, but the plastic is moving a bit, so a third tie wrap and some tyre pressure adjustment is made.

He makes the pub in gentle freewheel mode!! A classic tie wrap win (and it turns out these are holding in the hernia without the need for the plastic (which came out anyway).

20240418-IMG_5411iPhone 14 Pro

Warm fires, complementary hot arancini (deep fried risotto balls), and some dry layers and all is good.

20240418-IMG_5414iPhone 14 Pro

Chortling as “cashlow” Kershaw has a cold and dead phone – which = no apple pay, the tech changes but the moniker sticks!

20240418-IMG_5417iPhone 14 Pro

It’s an Adnams IPL (we never work out what the L stands for) ale, artisan style food, and plenty of banter and gentlemens Philsophical discussions. Suspicions that Troll reads up on wikipedia on wednesdays in order to quote niche facts!

Northumbrian bagpipes are heard from the far side, and a vast improvement on the Rainow ukeleies! A win for Langley 😉

Dunc arrives to join the table, and Ruth not long after.

G manages to coax the i device back into life long enough to pay his main bill, but is tempted into a further pint not long after, and we will delight in having to cover his bill for him 😉

Definitely a night for a stiff whisky before venturing back out into the wet for a cold ride home (with extra glass in the tesco underpass for the Tythy boys).

El Pres has a spare tyre (courtesy of Ruth) which he opts to carry and venture home on the three tie wrap fix. Three rings later he confirms he got home on them!

Time for some strongly worded comms with Shwalbe marketing dept methinks!

Notes

Lee sorted out this weeks TNR

20240411-IMG_5277iPhone 14 Pro

The weather turned again but it was less of a disaster than previous weeks.

Kersh arrived at the Cat as we considered disappearing into the low cloud and stiff breeze in the direction of the A54.

The top of the forest and almost all of Shutlinsloe were lost in the cloud as well !

Chumby was rougher than I recall. But as entertaining as ever. Waterfall was gushing.

20240411-IMG_5284iPhone 14 Pro

It was still daylight for 90% of the ride!

20240411-IMG_5281iPhone 14 Pro

We reached the St Dunstans as it was just going properly dark .

Wheeled the bikes through the pub ! To the decking bit outside.

Food had been pre/ordered from the top of The Zag.

Great pies , chips and peas . So-so beer .

The AOE has a new formula – half a Guinness and a Courvoisier.

It’s a long long ride home to Bollingtonia along the towpath. I got on at Gurnet. I don’t often ride this first section to Buxton Rd , but it’s interesting. Especially the bit at the back of Ginny & Marks. Huge walls and buttresses make the path feel very narrow.

Crew : El Pres, Pete

Pub : Dunc

Route : Zag bottom – Saddlers Way – Bottoms Reservoir – Leathers – Forest LHS ascent – Half-a-Charity  – Bull Hill Lane  – Oakenbank – The Poachers

Conditions : Wet , getting wetter and colder, muddy

Stats : 1 eBay sale ( our Green Sofa) mid ride

Notes

An early start (5.45 at Zag) and a late finish (11:30 in da poachers) .

Last week we were just four and I felt we were thin on the ground. This week just me and El Presidente. After a not bad day weatherise – it had felt quite mild and Spring-like ….alas it was raining when I left Gleave Ave at just a bit after 5pm .

20240403-IMG_5169iPhone 14 Pro

Straight away, even on tarmac I could feel the benefit of my new rear tyre ( Maxxis Minnion all of £38 via Amazon Prime) . Being about 5mins late I found Chris talking to another MTBer , Simon, who I knew by sight from the Poachers.

After our zag rendezvous and an ascent of Bowden Downs Lane (aka the Zag) , we took a route we rarely do – down Saddlers Way and then to the Bottoms Reservoir .

Then a gradual winch up on the left hand side of The Forest , lots of logging activity going on here.

At the start of Chazza there was a “swithering moment” (as my late father-in-law might have called it). A moment of indecision .

20240404-IMG_5183iPhone 14 Pro

Our plan had been to head clockwise to Nessit and then to head to Bollingtonia after that. As we ascended though, the weather had gone downhill . At this point a more direct line to the warmth and comfort of The Poachers was definitely a more appealing prospect.

At this point of indecision , I was suddenly distracted by an “ebay alert sound” from my phone. A TNR first had occurred (I believe) – a successful ebay sale mid ride ! Our two seater green sofa sold to the couple who own the house at Bowstones !

Back to “the swithering” – we compromise – with a decision to ride to the “col” of charity before heading for Bollingtonia. We linger for a moment at the transmitter station thing – enough to see that the mobile phone masts bear the Huwaei brand . mmm….

The Pub and warmth and beer beckon ….

At the Poachers there are three little MTB posses – The Nancies (only two of them have ridden tonight – snap !) , Simon et al (inc Richard B who I know) and the TNR dynamic duo.

A brief discussion with Richard from the WNB about the Bolly Skyline Enduro he is organising for September – over 400 entrants tickets all sold . More may be coming.

Chicken and ham pie and chips is a must , as is a few pints ? of Geronimo IPA and a fine porter at 5.7 as my pudding beer .

Dunc arrives and we have to confess to having shared our YouTube subscriptions . Chris thinks his (being all physics geekery) are not as rock’n’roll as mine. And indeed , many of mine are music geekdom related.

The AOE is a certainty with El Pres in his ascendant. Dunc abstains, but I select a fine Tamnavulin.

A Cap’n Dunc initiative .

“Scenes from a cold and damp spring ride to the Goyt Valley “

It was still daylight as we gathered at the bottom of the Zag. By this point we were all already a bit damp and cold – but being consenting adults we pressed on .

Climbing to the cat in daylight meant we could see what we were passing. It was a bit of a sad sight, which added to our discomfort in the stiff , wet easterly. New born lambs clinging to their mothers in the biting wind and rain . One poor individual seemed to have been separated from its mother. Chris remarked to me  “ wonder whether it will survive the night ?” .

Bizarrely I spotted a pair of hikers boots seemingly jammed in the bottom of a wire fence . How did this happen ? Wtf

Chris & I caught up with the dynamic duo at the tea rooms . It was too cold to linger – onward ! Once up on stake side we got some shelter from the evil wind. From this point onwards you definitely feel like you are out in the wilds and abandoning civilisation as you venture onward.

Stakeside descent was the muddiest and wettest I have ever encountered , but still quite fun . And it took longer than I thought it would to reach the gap in the wall where we turn left and drop into Shooter’s Clough. This descent needed a bit of care , but was quite entertaining in a “laughing insanely” manner. The stream at the bottom wasting a good impression of becoming a river – cross carefully or its wet and cold feet for the rest of the ride.

20240328-IMG_5042iPhone 14 Pro

The last section as you exit Shooter’s Clough and approach Errwood itself was insanely slippery – fortunately the steps down to the wooden bridge are stone and gave some grip as we carried our bikes down.

On the climb past the Shrine (St Joseph’s Chapel) to The Street Dunc leads despite his dodgy knee . It is partly rideable (mostly rideable for Dunc) , pushable for the slackers like me. Thankfully it was only a little bit of a mudfest. It was easy to miss the Shrine itself (Phil did !) as it lurked in the darkness to our left . I was (as normal) bringing up the rear – the red tail lights ahead beckoning me onward. Its shorter than you think it is going to be.

20240328-IMG_5051iPhone 14 Pro

Topping out at Pym’s chair …its tarmac all the way now , we dodge the pot holes on the descents and with our way up Dead Man’s Hill . Once you have topped out on Ewrin lane (it was about 8:20 pm ) you know you will be at The Robin Hood in no time . We arrived (as promised) by 8: 30.

The car park was packed , but we found room at the top end of the bar.

The Robin Hood is a strange mixture of a place,  but the beer choice is OK (Shipyard Pale, Timothy Taylor’s Landlord & Boltmaker) . The Cheese Burger (and chips) is quite good quality and only £10.50. They have a ukulele group on a Thursday ..but their singing is dire . A bit Room 101.

After noshing we relocated (from the slightly cavernous far end of the pub) to “the snug bit” opposite the bar – which has a fire ! And the ukuleles from hell had ceased their drone. Sitting here and warming up …we could observe a rather refreshed chap trying to sort out his card’s pin code and pay for his imbibing. Then I over hear that he has (somehow) to get back to Poynton …with his faithful (and long suffering) Spaniel.  Oh dear .

A bloke asked us where we had been riding – when I told him “down into the Goyt” its seemed to strike a chord .He  told me his father (as a young man) had worked on the demolition of several farms before they flooded the valley to create Errwood reservoir – and caught some nasty Rat born affliction in the process . And his grandfather built the dam which separates it from Fernilee reservoir.

Ruth arrives and treats the AOE to a round of Jura, bless her !

It is time to be home and thawed and dried out, but it has been a mini-adventure . What Cap’n Dunc calls #type2fun .

Three Rings all round before the witching hour !
