TNR 21-03-2024 The Jacksonville 13

Crew: TJ, El Pres, Slim, Troll, 3 Sheds, Bern, Dunc, Butty, McD, Stunt

Jacksonville: Doog, Croxy, Adrian & Biscuit + the Jacksonville hounds.

Route: Rainbow bridge ,Middlewood way to Poynton car park, Shrigley Road, reverse Chapel route to Moorside lane, up the quarry descent, veer right past the Mine cap, and down beavers creek to the layby, off road ascent to Dale top, parallel to the wall descent, chapel descent, Shrigley road, Jacksonville.

Conditions: Cool and breezy, slimy and wet trails.

Notes:

Another edition of the popular beer n pizza nights, this time hosted by TJ, with posh pizza’s and Dunc’s posh pizza oven!

With such a tempting offer, some country & western members join the posse – McD in suspicously clean kit and bike! Stunt is still on the semi fat steed with the KTM bottom pivot bolts still not sorted, and he’s now had a rear spoke go on the ride to the start!

Rapid transit to meet this weeks ride sherrif at the Poynton end, and the Butty takes us up into them there hills.

At the end of the Chapel track we are onto wet soft grass – plenty of mutterings about route choice as we struggle for grip (and leg strength!), once over the stream its actually easier going, until the sloppy bit at the top before the wall.

There is more to come heading up the quarry ascent – and only the ebike cleans this one. Finally we get some downhill action cutting into beavers creek past the mine monument. Quite technical – but good lines at the side with minium vegetation this time of year.

More sloppy slippy uphilling across the moor and over the ladder stile, the sheep watch half interestedly as we slowly close on Dale top.

Butty has to stop just short with pedal trouble, and again at Dale top – conflicting theories abound – cranks put on the wrong sides at the shop? but it seems that the pedals just don’t have a lot of thread and have worn badly. Eleccy tape is offered to help get some temporary grip, but a removal of washers gets one or two extra threads into the crank arm – sufficient to get him home!

WIth the many pair of red eyes glaring at us from that there Manchester, we take route one down to the lane (not that rocky – but uber slippy!), then Chapel descent and down the road back to Jacksonville.

Beers are waiting in the garden, dogs come and check us out, Dunc fires up his pizza oven, TJ gets ZZtop on the sound system , and we settle into the conservatory for the evening.

Croxy arrives avec G&T’s, Adrian with extra beer, and great to see Doog.

Topics of conversation included Gym etiquette, the obsession with being ripped by the youthful males of today and amusing names of yoga postions. All with plenty of southern drawl and quotes thrown in 😉

With Titanic plum porter on offer, and the appropriately named Woodford reserve bourbon to come, the AoE starts early, a pentagram of uber bad boys stay for TJ whisky and the last three rings come in past 02:30!

Great night – despite drizzly rides home, and fuzzy heads for some the next day.

We’re past the spring equinox now…

TNR 14-03-2024 Arriving late with oily hands

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew: Pete, El Pres, Troll, Dunc, Bern  (and Kersh)

Pub : TJ & Butty , Ruth

Route : Zag – Charity – Narnia – Hardingland – Bottoms Rezza – Coal Pit Lane – Back Eddisbury Lane – Calrofold – Rainow – Oakenbank – The Poachers

Conditions : No serious rain , quite mild , quite clear – when not up in the clouds !

Notes :

Confession time : Part 1 : I had a hankering to end up in The Poachers , and it was six weeks since the TNR last graced the threshold of this fine hostelry ! Part 2 : I also had a desire to do the “classic forest descent “ which I define as the apex of Charity (by the heritage transmitter station) all the way down to Bottoms Rezza .

I arrived at Zag , a little bit late , with mucky hands (from fixing an issue with my front mech). My crime was that I had broken the Thursday TNR “change freeze” . A heinous offence – don’t tinker with your bike just before you need it to be ultra reliable for your Thursday evening excursion.

20240314-IMG_4818iPhone 14 Pro 20240314-IMG_4820iPhone 14 Pro

Tbh the main thing I had “fixed” – the pivot bearings- were working fine . An innocent squirt (ooh err , missus) of GT85 into my front mech’s shifter had resulted in it not being able to shift to the smaller of the two front chain rings. But I only discovered this en route to zag. Fortunately just adding about 1cm of slack to the cable seemed to sort out the issue. Bodge it and scarper.

20240314-IMG_4826iPhone 14 Pro

The weather was ok .. but by charity we were touching the cloud base and head torches were no use. The Narnia descent lived up to my expectations, it was very slippery on the descent of the steps – but this just adds to the fun.

20240314-IMG_4831iPhone 14 Pro

Hardingland too was in classic, gnarly condition. As ever I was the tail end Charlie, and just after the stream dip I find everyone stopped and talk of a Troll puncture. He has no pump, but fortunately Chris does . A good chance for me to get a few “nativity scene “shots.

20240314-IMG_4834iPhone 14 Pro

As we skirt the edge of bottoms reservoir Kersh arrives , fresh from the Alps.

Coalpit lane escape – ok it’s a big climb but at least it flattens out in intervals to give you a break. The lights of the Manchester Skyline are now quite visible and beckon us onward to the delights of  Bollingtonia.

I think this is a TNR first – a forest-side muster point and forest centric ride but with a Bolly finish .

The Poachers welcomes us like Prodigal Sons . Dortmunder is my starter – a fine palate cleanser – then a “Creme Bearlee” (a Beartown stout). Haddock and chips for just ÂŁ14 ! .

TJ arrives with Butty, who is looking much better .

The AOE sample a fine dram of Tamnavulin

Three leave the poachers at almost midnight .

I like this formula !

Postcript : My maths and os maps research says about only 11miles circuit from Gleave Ave but about 2300ft ascent. I got horrendous cramp in both thighs in the middle of the night.

TNR 7-03-2024 Lazarus Rides Again!

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Croxy, 3 Sheds, Slim, Dunc, Butty, Stunt

Route: Top’o’Bull Hill lane, Tea rooms, Shining Tor, Across the Moors to Hooleyhey lane, Ewrin Lane, Smith Lane, Robin Hood.

Conditions: Cold with Strong Easterly wind, trails very soft in places.

Notes:

Having scouted out the Robin Hood the other week, its time to include it as a TNR destination, food is pre-ordered and a cunning route is cooked up to get us there.

At the meet point, the wind is already a talking point, there may not be any precipitation but the early March weather lion is waking up! It’s not going to be a night where we want to be stopped for too long, and with a very welcome arrival of Butty, and then Dunc (nursing dicky knee) we leave PTD to catch us up and head up the road.

A strong blustery headwind makes for tough riding, and being grateful for when the landscape provides any shelter, the long drag is one such relief, but turning the corner at the end for the last few bends to the tea rooms is full on nasty!

PTD has come via bottom of the oven to join us at the tearooms.

There is worse to come, as we will be really exposed on the ridge – and indeed care is needed lifting bikes over the gates & walls as they are acting like sails!!

Dunc’s knee has been fine on the Tarmac, but is less happy offroad, so he decides to head to the Hood via the lanes.

The rest of us enjoy wind assist up to Shining Tor (although even that can’t help with the six inch deep soft patches that stop us in our tracks!).

Chuffing Cold Up Here

Wind really roaring up there, so lead riders are sent off to find the turn (and shelter beind the wall) – however they miss it – but luckily realise their mistake and work their way back to the main group.

It’s still very boggy at the top, but the wind has taken the moisture off the dead dry grass so it’s fairly good going (and with a serious tail wind).

Hideous noises like a strangled bagpipe can be heard over the wind – Stunt is on the tubby tired bike (with the full suss not yet back in action) and there is some serious brakepad contamination!!

He’s hoping that long descents will get them hot enough to burn it off (not over the moors it seems).

20240307-IMG_4678iPhone 14 Pro

The windchill must be sub zero, so we release the front group to go for home so as not to wait for the laggards. At the gate to Hooleyhey lane separation is complete.

Lower down the wind is more bearable, and there is less assist on dead mans lane than hoped for, but even so we are all at the Robin Hood ten minutes ahead of our 8:30 cut off.

Pete has cunningly arranged our table to be in the back room, giving us maximum distance to R’Uke the Rainow Ukele group, who are singing away on the other side.

Boltmaker is excellent, and the food is pretty good too (and very reasonably priced) the only complaint being El Pres’s underdone batter on his fish.

Deep knee discussions (folk seem to know a lot about it!), the second barrel of Boltmaker not as good as the first (did it need time to settle?). Fun Fact from PTD – Shining Tor is the highest point in England this far north (ie nothing higher all the way to the south coast – or even Dartmoor/Exmoor). Some map geekery confirms that it’s also higher than Axe Edge too!

Butty has brought his Mocha shake to imbibe via his tube, with syringe, which he is a well practiced master at. NHS dis connectedness then becomes a theme with many examples.

Quite how we then got on to how Range Rovers are being nicked by boosting the keyless key signals and then reprogramming them I’m not sure – but there was little sympathy for JLR or the owners around the table!

A strange standoff then emerges with those after a fourth pint, vs those who can’t be bothered…in the end we pay the bill and reconvene in the beer garden to sample Shaun’s 63% rum. It’s powerful stuff, and very warming on this cold evening. We are told that a 40ish% version will be in waitrose soon…that does sound good!

20240307-IMG_4685iPhone 14 Pro

It’s been a double buff night for sure, and many a nose is covered on the way home on the descents!

3 rings from Butty who has impressed with his determination to get back on the bike on a less than enticing route & conditions!

Bring on the March lamb!

TNR 29-02-2024 Rare Day, Rare Venue

20240229-IMG_4565iPhone 14 Pro

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew : Bern, 3Sheds, Pete , El Pres, Lee & Smiffy Steve , Alex

Pub: Butty & Dunc, El Pud

Route : Bull Hill Top  – Tea Rooms – Cat – Danebower – Chumby – St Stone tarmac descent with Bobs bench loop add-in – St Dunstans

Conditions : Cold , no rain but very damp descending chumby

Notes :

The first ever TNR (in TNR history) when the leap day actually falls on a Thursday !

A route designed by Alex to fit in with our St Dunstans finish (well organised by El Pres) , but alas he didn’t get past the McDonalds roundabout before discovering a squirming rear suspension !

It was just four of us who gathered at the top of Bull Hill ..eagerly awaiting the arrival of our “guest rider” Smiffy Steve .

After five or ten minutes we all set off , minus Lee who was awaiting our guest from Broken Cross. Rumours of a regular e-biker having returned to riding the acoustic trance .

At the Tearooms it was time for another layer as I was definitely a bit too cold . It was bleak and uneventful going over Danebower to the A54 …in the winter , and the dark it always feels wild and miles from anywhere on this stretch – but it is still worthwhile. Especially when picking the right line on the last 200m or so.

Cumberland Clough (Chumby) is getting more and more seriously eroded  – it is getting harder to pick the right line (unless your name is 3sheds). The section before the waterfall now has an over a metre deep V-sectioned groove in it on the sweeping right hand bend before you reach the “rocks like baby’s heads’ (an El Pud phrase from yesteryear) .

It is still fun …but that hint of a sense of masochism when riding this descent has been turned up just a little bit.

20240229-IMG_4566iPhone 14 Pro

After the waterfall  Chumby is definitely a semi-river and the rocks have definitely been put on a course of steroids.

Lee & Smiffy appear on the slow climb to Standing Stone – they had done Danebower but taken a faster tarmac route down Wildboarclough to catch us up.

The clock is ticking so its a tarmac descent to Langley with the obligatory addition of the Bob’s bench loop – it would be rude (and bad form) not to !

Alex is waiting for us at the St Dunstans. It was a bit of a mission, but he managed to get his Boardman 29er rolling .

The Dunny delivers in spades ! Phil (previously the barman at Sutton Hall) is single-handedly delivering good beer and fine nosh . The pub is doing a good trade , is warm , and “just the right size” to feel like the right answer after that classic MTB loop .

We are welcomed by Phil like long last friends. The beer of choice is Red Willow’s Reckless .

Dunc arrives with Butty sporting his nose tube , and looking a lot better than a week ago chez Austin

20240229-IMG_4571iPhone 14 Pro

Then Andy T turns up to turn the Ribaldry Volume Dial up to 11 !!

Lee suggests a brandy for the AOE – it has to be Courvoisier .

A fine formula . It is good to be back.

TNR 22-02-2024 Puddletown Martyrs

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, 3 Sheds, Dunc, Troll, Stunt

Austin Towers: Billy & Charlie, Adrian, TJ, Butty

Route: Rainbow Bridge, Canal to bridge 28, track up to Oak Lane, Redway Lane, Nancyside Lane, North Farm, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley Vale, Poachers snicket, Oakenbank, Kiskhill Lane, Jumper Lane, Blaze Hill, Rainow, Robin Hood, Oakenbank, Poachers snicket, Lord Street, Austin Towers.

Conditions: Cold, lots of surface water.

Notes:

Spring is in the air, the sky is not quite dark when setting out for the ride, and it’s not raining. Yet the ground is sodden, it’s cold, and there is some lingering winter malaise.

To liven things up Pete invites us to Austin Towers (oh behave!) for post ride pizza and beer.

Still at the rendevous, the route plan is mostly about avoiding the main muddy bits. With the track to Clarke Lane farm underwater for quite a section, Pete leads us onto the Canal – where a near unbroken string of puddles is almost as wet as the Canal itself!

20240222-IMG_4481iPhone 14 Pro

Then it’s huff and puff up the doubletrack, and climb on tarmac past the Bulls Head, and onto the concrete to crest Nancyside lane. We are now a bit warm on this sub five night.

A token bit of slop on the back of Kerridge from North Farm to Waulkmill wood – is slippy, slithery stuff – 3 Sheds wins the most effective route choice – by going high and sticking to the grass!

The descent to the gate (and the roaring waterfall) is also a test of keeping it straight through deepish mud!

All the recent rain has washed a mud free channel down the snicket – which is thus the line to take, and it’s more of the same up Oakenbank.

Extended route discussions at Kiskhill lane, a general lack of enthusiasm for heading to the Gritstone, so we opt for the short climb from Jumper lane up Blaze hill, before turning right and looping back into Rainow. Far more enthusiasm for a cheeky pint in the Robin Hood, and to check out food options for a possible future finish.

20240222-IMG_4484iPhone 14 Pro

Installed in the stone flagged snug under the watchful eye of Robin the Raven, the food offerings look good (and value) with 8:30 serving on a Thursday. As we break open the tactical crisps (to keep up the energy pre pizza) and hear 3 Sheds waxing lyrical about bathers in 3 Shires, Ukelelies start up from across the room.

From bare topped ladies to bear necessities it could be a fine sing a long…if it wasn’t for the blandness of the folk groups vocals, I’ve heard more emotion from brownies singing Kum by yah! We may need to determine if this is a thursday ritual…

20240222-IMG_4488 2iPhone 14 Pro

Pints and crisps finished, back out into the cold – the odd flake of snow falling here and there, and attack the climb up Oakenbank to get some warmth before the descent.

3 Sheds heads off to grab a Kebab (Pizza not his thing), whilst the rest of us dodge the Gritter on Lord Street and Decontaminate in the underground garage. Barky Billy and Charlie do eventually calm down, G&T’s are offered, and beers opened.

Adrian arrives, with tales of hard snow, banged shoulder, and carrying on (he’s tough!)

The Pizzas get delivered, and very fine they are too (local bolly fare wins over standard chain offerings)

20240222-IMG_4493iPhone 14 Pro

TJ brings Butty, and the Dune comparisons kick off with tubing talk.

Later an AoE develops, whisky is drunk, Jane is welcomed home, and it’s well past the witching hour by the time we leave.

Butty here’s to dry trails by the time you are back on the bike!

TNR 15-02-2024 10 Years on…

20240215-IMG_4408iPhone 14 Pro

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Dunc, Croxy, Troll, Lee, Stunt

Pub: Ruth

Route: Back Eddisbury, Zag, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, ressies, Kings Head.

Conditions: Very mild, light rain, low cloud, very wet trails

Ten years since we lost Dan, so a simple ride to his bench at Nessit for G&T’s

After the snow last week, it’s gone totally the other way, temperature in double figures, but wet with it – baselayer under waterproof territory, with maybe a loosly tied neckerchief rather than a buff?

At the bottom of the Zag ribaldry breaks out early as the tythy twosome have spotted the Troll van at the top of Coalpit lane with the back doors open…

He is soon with us, as is Lee, and with less rain than expected we head off up on our ceremonial loop.

Seems like it’s been warm in the alps too – with returning skiiers reporting poor conditions low down.

We are into the bottom of the cloud at the top of Charity, and the decent throws more than water at us. Recent tyre tracks on either side show 4×4 activity, which has created new gouges, diplaced rocks and brought fresh mud! Spicy!

The extension has been free of motorised vehicles, but the rains/snow melt have left a rockfield halfway down with no clear line! We all manage to find a way through without incident.

The trail from Standing stone takes us up as tendrils of cloud come down, giving some nice misty atmopherics. As we come up the S bend a large group of bikers are coming down the other way.

20240215-IMG_4411iPhone 14 Pro

At Dan’s bench we are clear of cloud, but that doesn’t seem to help El Pres and PTD located the stashed goodies nearby – Pete finally directs them – they had walked past it twice without spotting it!

El Pres has supplied the Gin & Tonic, Pete the ice and lemon, Troll homemade sausage rolls (and a veggie version for Lee), with mini pork pies and english mustard also on offer. A veritable feast, we Toast Dan, another for Butty’s treatement finishing tomorrow, one for Eric’s 70th and more for departed mums.

We mull on life, reflect that Dan would have loved the TNR band, and probably been very geeky on ebikes, and have been dragging us up Croker Hill to get filthy on the way down!

There has been a tree planted next to the bench – but great hilarity when we realise its just a stick someone has poked into the ground 😉

We head down between the DH course (the muddy bit in the middle is a bit sketchy) and regroup at the “bottom of the middle” (or is it the “top of the bottom”?)

20240215-IMG_4424iPhone 14 Pro

We allow a freshly emerged toad to cross to safety before we carry on – full speed down to the Kings head.

Care is needed when ordering beers as the other group of bikers have arrived and there are two table tabs on the go!

Our pre-ordered food comes, plates a groaning (nice to see), washed down with Landlord, Inception, or a beartown best.

Conversation somehow meanders to where Myhrr comes from, and then onto Tiger’s anal glands…and how you might distract them to obtain the essence!! Long stick with a feather on it apparently 😉

Around the edges of the table pics of bathroom upgrades, and solar/battery geekery take us into more sensible territory, before nostlgia for 80’s hot hatches (and Dad’s powerful cars) gets us back into proper territory.

Ruth arrives with tales of doorframe yoga, and a chunky tabby wanders in for some petting at closing time – apparently he demands to be fed on a regular basis (and suceeds looking at him!)

In two weeks time we will have a rare 29th feb ride we are told…

We can feel spring starting, but it would be nice not to have to ride in filth every week for a bit!

TNR 08-02-2024 There’s always one…

Crew: Stunt

Route: MC, zig zags, charity (tarmac), hacked way lane, back into the forest at the gate, witches cottage, main trail/road to Leathers, home via Clarke lane and town.

Conditions: Gusting 40mph winds, above freezing, light rain, recent snow.

Notes:

Weather warnings a plenty as a big low pressure from the East comes across cold air and triggers potential snowmaggedon. It’s all about the temperatures, and a day of roaring winds and rain in Macc is blizzards and havoc in Buxton.

But there will be snow on them thar hills, and someone really wants to find it.

After an amusing poll of which excuse for not riding tonight, it seems there is only one who is determined to go and find the snow – and sets out a single lap of the forest option for those who might want to brave the conditions.

Well wrapped up in waterproofs over many layers Stunt sets off and posts arrival at Muller Corner on time, it’s Billy no mates time. No snow here, just wetness and mud on the zig, but only a few meters of vertical height later at the start of the Zag some rapidly melting white stuff is evident, and by the top it could just about be called snow, and covers the whole of the track.

The winds is strong and in your face, probably the gentlest descent from Windyways (aptly named) to Walker barn to avoid being blown over.

Charity offers shelter – by being a sunken lane, the lower tarmac section is slushy, some pushing is needed when grip goes as a result. Part way up its proper snow, and pedalling can resume – mainly in the tracks of a 4×4 that has come up recently. Wonderful sinuous shapes on the banks where the vegetation has been covered in smooth curves. As the lane flattens out the wind is again roaring across the fields to make life difficult, at the start of Charity proper there are some big drifts, but going up will be into the teeth of the weather – probably not a good plan whilst solo riding.

I decide to head down Hacked way lane, and immediately spot two sets of tyre tracks – it looks like there are at least two other madmen in the forest tonight.

A couple of inches of snow makes for nice riding all the way down to the gate, and it’s more of the same on the trail – there is much more shelter from the wind here too.

On the long track down from Witches cottage to the road – it’s speedy, and not slippy, but the snow is getting wetter the lower you go, and the last section is just mainly meltwater!

Route one home, and passing the Leathers the road is clear, and just the odd bit of slush at the sides.

The wind is now my friend, as it blows me home for an early bath, and I can report a proper TNR has been completed 🙂

TNR 01-02-2024 Kebab & Chips

20240201-IMG_4239iPhone 14 Pro

Words and photos by Pete (& Alex)

Crew : Troll, Dunc, PTD, Pete & 3Sheds

Pub: Alex, Adrian & Biscuit

Route : RB – War Memorial – Endon – via Novel traverse – Kerridge Bridleway – Waulkmill Wood – Church St – Eateries reconnaissance – Pott Shrigley – Moorside Lane – Chapel descent – Long Lane – Pappas Kebab Shop – Poachers

Conditions : Cool (5C) , no rain but fairly muddy

Notes

When I called the Poachers to book a table …I was suprised to be informed…no food being provided as they have no kitchen staff ! eek ! . But carry-out nosh taken in is OK as an alternative ! (They even provided crockery and cutlery)

20240201-IMG_4219iPhone 14 Pro

So it turns into an easy ride with some reconnaissance of take-out food places . It was not totally slack as we had a novel traverse of the saddle of Kerridge using the footpath from the end of Lidgett’s Lane – very slippy and lots of pushing .

Good to be up on the top especially as its a calm night. A little tricky trying to stay upright and get down to the bridleway . The Troll became Mr Tumble Troll due to insufficient tyre tread …but we all struggled to get traction .

Carry-out recon : The Chinese is cash only and has no fish & chips ..but The Kebab place takes cards and has a vote of confidence from PTD.

20240201-IMG_4227iPhone 14 Pro

A loop out to Moorside Lane and the Chapel descent – PTD takes on Beeston Brow solo as the rest of the crew aren’t keen on gaining and then immediately losing height . Great mackerel sky  on show on reaching the Brickworks. The chapel descent was particularly wet and muddy , but reliably satisfying .

20240201-IMG_4226iPhone 14 Pro

Back via long lane , most went left up Green Lane , I went right as it was the fastest route to my Kebab !

20240201-IMG_4233iPhone 14 Pro

We left our “shipping order” in the capable hands of the ladies of the Kebab , and winched are way up to the Poachers where Alex had already set up base camp at our usual table . The Troll played a blinder and drove down to pick it all up !!

20240201-IMG_4238iPhone 14 Pro

There were jealous glances from the Nancies as the Kebabs were unpacked and consumed…generous portions of chips too. Dunc goes straight for the Peanut Porter (or was it a stout?), which divides opinion.

Dortumunder is a more popular choice to start with.

20240201-IMG_4241iPhone 14 Pro

Once the table is cleared, and more beers are consumed, the tables are turned as the Nancies pop across the road and bring back curry from the viceroy!

Adrian and the lovely biscuit arrive to join the throng, before the responsible early leavers head out. A small AoE sample a smooth whisky to warm the cockles before a chilly ride home.

TNR 25-01-2024 Firecracker Haggis in the woods

20240130-image8.jpg

Words by Alex, Photos by John

Crew: El Pres, Croxy, Dunc, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Butty

Route:

Rainbow bridge, Clarke Lane, Endon House climb, Lidgetts Lane, Back of Kerridge, slope of doom, Rainow, Oakenbank, Pott Shrigley, Styperson Woods, snicket of doom, Sugar Lane, Canal, Bridge by Tinkers Clough, Oak Lane, Redway Lane, “Under Nancy”, Ingersley vale, snicket, Poachers.

Conditions: Mild, breezy, drizzle post pub.

Notes:

Croxy alerts us to the fact it will be Burn’s night this TNR, with various Burn’s night suppers being advertised by some of our hostelries- but they either start too early, or are too expensive. Troll suggests some al fresco eating of snackage inspired by the occasion, and this sounds even better!

However the weather forecasts suggest that we do finish the evening indoors, and a Poachers finish is the inevitable conclusion.

20240130-image12.jpg

Dunc polls for attendance, and a small crew assemble at RB to work out the rest! Croxy even on his acoustic full suss – and E-C*#t free evening!

Tis a windy night (if extremely mild) so going high is not going to be fun, Croxy suggests a route and no one has a better plan so off and over the Canal we go.

Conversation is kicked off by said pensioner who has a petrol driven RC model aeroplane that he built some years ago, and now with some time to play he enquired about flying it at the strip in the field we are riding past – ÂŁ200 to join they said (insurance it seems), Croxy is not yet tempted…or it is the fear of crashing it?? Sub topic – when is a model RC not a drone? there is a difference apparently!

Talking of the skies – there is a wonderful full moon – enhanced by scudding clouds passing it by – we will admire it all evening.

20240130-image4.jpg

De layer faffing at the top of the Endon house climb due to overheating!

Back of Kerridge is not that muddy – the slope of doom is not that treacherous, but the soft bit after the stream at the bottom is very soft sticky mud…which then comes off tyres in flying lumps on the road descent into Rainow!

Oakenbank is running fast – but the lower section is still muddy for from tractor activity, which makes hitting it at speed a little sketchy.

20240130-image3.jpg

Road all the way to Styperson, where we find some handy rocks just short of the bombhole to keep out of the wind, and set out the treats…

20240130-image10.jpg

20240130-image13.jpg

Troll has baked haggis with firecracker sauce sausage rolls, Croxy has brought Jura – aged in pale ale casks (wtf marketing bollocks). Both are extremely moorish, and pair well together. Being a smallish crew we get three rolls each, and somehow we manage to imbibe over half the bottle to boot!

20240130-image9.jpg

The forecast rain has not yet made an appearance, and we have time on our side, so Croxy extends the loop (to burn off some of the alcohol) by dropping onto the Canal off Sugar lane, and heading back Kerridge way to pick up Oak lane.

This means we will get a steep little climb up Nancy Lane, some nice views of Bollingtonia by moonlight, and take the Poachers from the rear up the mucky snicket.

Our usual table reserved in Pete’s name, speaking of whom he messaged earlier picturing lunch in the Alps with a 5 Litre bottle of Rioja!

Dunc shares news of Big Nic – well on the mend after a bit of internal rejointing needed from an op he had in his 20’s.

Thornton initiates purile humour from afar, progress on the Troll house must have reached roofiness as he’s talking solar panels, geekery extends to methane purifiers on septic tanks, and thence to electric cars, with a bit of divertion to True Detective (Jodie foster starring in season 4 at the moment).

Butty arrives with tales of treatment, and suitably gross humour.

All of the banter and food is washed down with Citra, Desert Storm and eventually pudding beer, and speaking of puddings El Pres goes apple pie dessert!

No AoE (well we did do some decent whisky imbiming beforehand), it is raining on the way home, but just light drizzle blown by the gusty winds.

It feels good to have done January (from a TNR perspective), the light is staying noticeably longer in the afternoons, and next week is Feb!

Pete you were missed – and you have competition in the photographer stakes from Croxy!

Witch's Cottage 2

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew : El Pres, Troll, Bernard, Dunc & Pete

Weather : chuffing cold but good snow for a bit of fun riding. -3c at least

Route :  MC – Zag – Charity – Narnia – bench – Witch’s cottage- Leathers

Notes

Chris’s Mum died last week, after clocking up a century last April. As the cliche goes – a fine innings.

I knew that he was keen on an in-ride “toast to the mother of the El Presidente” . A suitable circuit of the forest was commissioned.

On my way across from (the People’s Republic of) Upper Bollingtonia I had a wonderful tawny owl fly-over on Calrofold Lane. My head torch picked it up beautifully. Just magical, so silent.

It’s -3c , but fortunately the lanes are fairly clear of ice until I turned off cliff lane towards Back Eddisbury. Twitchy bum time.

It turned into a bit of a token ride but it was big on fun and atmosphere.

That winter certainty, Dunc on the Fortitude, was waiting for us at the start of Chazza. It was fun from here on in .

Some went left (traditional)side, some went right side (upper grassy, now a good few inches of snow and frozen and rutted  bit) . It was a Ski Mtb experience . Such a laugh. I think the right hand side was the right answer !

Charity

Troll had announced lighting issues at our zag meet up but survives the ride ok .  A Pavo lifeline plastic fixing bracket debate ensued

( The Troll’s second non OEM bracket had snapped )

Narnia was very atmospheric in snow , great light. It would be a crime not to ride in these conditions.

We stopped at the bench, and El Pres dished out Negronis. A toast to Jean , whose favourite tipple was this cocktail. It is a powerful and tasty concoction .

Main alcohol: Vermouth, Campari, Gin

Ingredients: 1 oz (1 part) Campari, 1 oz (1 part) Gin, 1 oz (1 part) Sweet red Vermouth

Preparation: pour from a re-used plastic 750ml bottle

Served: Al fresco in Narnia, Macc Forest

Standard garnish: a smidgen of rutted, frozen snow

Drinkware: Pete’s plastic cups

Witch's Cottage 3

The steps descent to Witches cottage was more relaxed and entertaining as a consequence of a couple of Negroni. Pick your line and take your chances!

Only one gammon in the Leathers, battered whale for me !

We were out by 10:30, as John had electrical work starting at 6am the next day . Bloomin eck !

Glad I packed my Montane down jacket for the ride home.
