Route: BL, Tea rooms, Shining Tor, New classic to back of Lamaload, Hoolehay & Erwin lanes, blaze hill, bolly, prezza, Legh Arms

From TNR 01-12-11 Slithering from Shining Tor
From TNR 01-12-2011 Slithering Off Shining Tor (Version 2)

notes:

Riders gather as usual despite confusion of multiple comms platforms to be welcomed by the first lady 🙂

Doog returns after wheel repair heroics & Shaun’s whyte returns in taut re-bearinged form!

alas the pool night (& Bernard) are nowhere to be seen :-

From TNR 01-12-11 Slithering from Shining Tor

A crazy route plan emerges – and tea rooms are reached by various routes (time for a cheeky chazza if you’re quick)

10 speed chain debate re-ignited after Dan curses the evening by commenting on modern bike reliability.

Its cold up there and we are treated to the first flakes of winter snow

The new classic is wetter and boggier than a wet boggy thing, but oh for a long summer ride across it!!!

From TNR 01-12-11 Slithering from Shining Tor

Time beats us and its road all the way to El Puds new local, where a table for 9 is conjured up despite the heaving throng.

Seafood linguini is the new pie, Cheapest beer in town, tales of urban riding, plans for macpac to coast, will G go orange? (maybe if its a 29er!)

Slim & Stunt count the cost of being good!

From TNR 24-11-11 Hills and Stiles But not many miles

Da pub : dunc and kersh
Route : hollins crossing – langley – Holehouse lane – reservoirs – saddlers way ascent – gritstone trail – bull lane – lidgetts lane – kerridge ridge bridleway – poachers snicket – beeston brow – styperson woods – canal – sugar lane – The Vale

From TNR 24-11-11 Hills and Stiles But not many miles

Stats :
1 off …Slim on the very slippy kerridge bridleway.
Notes :

From TNR 24-11-11 Hills and Stiles But not many miles

An unusual route, but very satisfying. It felt longer that it really was.
Highlights ..the Gritstone Trail section and the crossing of the Hollins.
Some route indiscipline in the beeston brow environs…but Butty has always been a free spirit.
Definitely a slack feel to the pace …but hey, it’s nearly the weekend.
El Pres was designated security equipment mule for the evening after his repeated bad behaviour.
Once more the ale flowed in the Vale, with table service from the charming bar staff.
Xmas plans were crystallised .

TNR 17-11-2011 New Classic Route….to punctures galore

Crew : El Pres, Slim, TJ, 3sheds

Pub : Dunc and EL Pud

(The wrong Pub) : Nic & Pugsley

Route : Road to Tea Rooms, Shining Tor, new classic but cheeky route To Lamaload, Right hand side passage of reservoir back to the Access Rd, new classic but cheeky route through Rainow to Ingersley Vale. The Poachers :-(..and then the Vale

Conditions: 9c in Macc, about 5c with the Wind chill at Shining Tor. Blowy on the tops

Stats :

At least one off..
3 punctures
1 lift from El Pud for those who had done their security prep
No lifts for those who had neglected security prep (“the guilty”)
2 inner tubes to be changed to get “the guilty” back home
1 incidence of poetic justice
1 outbreak of TNR author smugness 🙂

Notes :

Poor turn out by recent standards but an easy number to manage in newish territory
Maiden voyage on the Shining Tor to Lamaload route for El Pres and TJ
Classic route not quite as wet as last time…just skiddy enough to produce grins all round
Starlit, black with a cold breeze made it feel very “out in the wilds”
Poachers is a no go for nosh a 9.24….
…but the Vale is warm & welcoming with late nosh orders allowed, fine ale (Long Hop & Burton Bitter) and beer delivered to the table .
Despite earlier public warnings we had 3 failures of “security prep”
Rendezvous prep with Nic thwarted by forgotten mobiles….but he had “Pugsley” to keep him company.

Seven intrepid teams gathered to hot wine & sausage rolls chez Eric’s for syncronisation of watches, attachment of map boards and bravado from butty.

Andicapping staggered starts from 18:42 to 19:00 o’clock on a mild evening with slight breeze under a full moon.

From TNR 10-11-2011 Ericquest V
From TNR 10-11-2011 Ericquest V

This year and early decision on first control would most likely set the route for most.

Controversy soon followed…with confusion at second controls bunching up the groups, being an observant tortoise gains you 20 points we later discover. Cunning placements of high point controls, some new territory – south to fourways and down to wildboarclough, plus familiar forest & Hardingland routes. No Cat controls (too foggy Tuesday night apparently).

From TNR 10-11-2011 Ericquest V
From TNR 10-11-2011 Ericquest V

All too soon it’s a melee of bikes & riders belting round the reservoir and into the Smithy.

Billy makes it round and in one piece! Dunc and Dan actually manage to find the finish (it was a 50/50 call)

Bombadier & wolfing down of food, debate on controls, hushed silence for the results, uproar at the harsh but fair judgements and the presentation of prizes.

Then it’s banter, and merriment into the night.

From TNR 03-11-2011 Delayed Danniversary

Crew: Dan, G, PTD, El Pres, 3 Sheds, TJ, Butty, Stunt, Nic, Joe

Pub: Dunc, El Pud, Slim

Route: BL, Old Buxton Road to Teggs Nose, L or R descent to suit, Teggs nose trail & up Hardingland ,Chazza, Narnia, RH side diversion from the main drag down from the ruined barn, Snowgoose via Pump Track.

Conditions: Warm & Dry night , wet & muddy trails

Stats: Joe breaks a chain, PTD has an off

Notes:

Mass de layering at BL as dark doesn’t equal cold

Dan takes charge for his 4th Danniversary ride and its all killer hills and fun descents (even Kersh admits the up hardingland was not meant to be taken seriously!)

PTD somehow manages to bring a bike with dodgy forks..you would have thought he might have at least one servicable steed 😉

Joe sees the pro’s in action to repair his chain in record time

G&T in the forest good :-), “follow me” from PTD straight afterwards bad…or good if  you were watching :-)… (must have been the forks)

Dan charges downhill a little ahead of schedule so we divert to  the pump track (fun but its harder than it looks!)

Plently of room at the Snowgoose for bikes, novel meal format of hot soup with bread, cheese and cold pies does the job.

Boho Shabby Chic attracts an eclectic crowd, which matches the eclectic banter and Twittiness.

Bosely Clouds migrate to Leffe at last orders, pay as you go is an unexpected challenge but we rise to it 🙂

Winter Season now officially open!

Words and pics by Slim

Crew : El Pud, Big Nic, Dunc, Butty, El Pres, Slim, Kersh , Langley Joe
Pub: TJ

Route : BL, Langley, Rangers Centre, Offroad Ascent towards Shutlingsloe, 3sheds “Two sided” valley, Wildboarclough, Forest Chapel, Narnia, Fire Road descent, Leathers Smithy

From TNR 27-10-2011 Gorillas In the Mist

Conditions: Mistier than a misty thing on Misty Day, getting a lot wetter by Narnia, very slippy underfoot.
Faff quota: High for slim…took wrong route from Rangers Centre with Butty, rear brake jammed on, a couple of offs in the greasy conditions on the far side of shutlingsloe

From TNR 27-10-2011 Gorillas In the Mist

Notes:
– El pud being El Capitaine for the evening is always a good start
– Misty, murky and mild. Layers were being shed by the time we reached the Trentabank Rangers Centre
– Slim and Butty went missing-in-action for a while on the ascent through the forest
– Visibility was naff by the back of the forest, and head mounted lighting was definitely not the right answer
– “the bridge is a bit slippy” was the understatement of the evening
– good to be back on the little visited track on the far side of Shutlingsloe

-Big Nic won the “which is the fastest route to Chapel” sprint, proving that the killer climb to Standing Stone is better than the Bottom-of-the-Oven route

– the Gorillas gathered in the mist of Narnia (at the yuletide mustering point) to enjoy a Thornton concoction of Drambuie and summat else? …the winter is coming and late-in-the-ride morale boosting snifters need to become mandatory
– we retired to the Leathers to talk about such lofty subjects as horses on tandems, and to chortle until the small hours…;-)

Cloud clearing to allow a bit of star gazing
8c in macc, bit cooler by Nessit with a moderate breeze.
Not overly muddy but Teggs Nose descent very slippy near the bottom.

From TNR 20-10-2011 Return to the South

Notes:
Starlit skies and Jupiter spotted.
Simple forest route. Love Narnia bit and the steps to the top of Harding land.
Bumped into a soloing Coley at the top of Nessit.
Wibbly wallaby and beef stew popular in the CH
Lost some and gained some..Dave H by the bottom of Nessitt….and then Dunc and Nic (aka Tythy Twins) turned up in the CH post own route.
El Pres and Paul happy to be watering in South Macc once more.

Stats:
Two lighting failures …3sheds and Slim

From TNR 13-10-2011 A New Classic

Notes:
Good to see Dan again, and a welcome return for Dave H (not seen since April) .
Mr T filled the route leadership vacuum & god was thus in his heaven once more.
He delivered a classic new route in familiar territory.
And we toasted his success with a Polish Liqueur drinkies stop after our descent from Shining Tor.
By Rainow the crew had dispersed a bit, and Mr T pulled another surprise out of his hat with the cheeky route down to Rainow via Ingersley vale . Oakenbank Lane must be sulking now.
Storm Brewery’s finest ales and fine nosh awaited us at the Poachers.
El Pres came along to celebrate another North Macc route and post ride hostelery 😉
T.J. Arrived in www.brightbikelights.com livery. Just in time to talk warranty small print with 3sheds and Pete 😉
What with the Nancies in residence as well, it was almost like coming home .

From TNR 06-10-2011 Edge of the Storm

Crew: Slim, El Pres, TJ, Nic, Dan, Stunt, Joe

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Tythy Bollin Valley, Chelford Road, Bridleway then Pete’s Snicket to the Owl, Bradford Lane Descent, Hocker/Slade back up, Edge descent, Swiss Hill, Road back to Legh Arms Prestbury

From TNR 06-10-2011 Edge of the Storm

Conditions: Windy, occasionally wet, just enough mud under a carpet of beech leaves 🙂 Lighting and Downpour at the death. (About 7c ….and last week was 20c !!!!)

A stat free night

Notes:

Manflu robbed us of a competent edge routemeister

Slim gets all nostalgic about his former commuting routes

Bradford descent is super fun (with some extra slipperynessfor added spice)

Amazingly we find a proper descent without getting lost (only the one “its not this way” retracing)

Its all about tyres on swiss hill (we that was nic’s excuse)

All too soon we need to head for the pub, some are seduced into watching amazing lightning..and arrive very wet in Prezza.

Piano players, super service, good food, lovely surroundings, puddings & Highland Park chasers …we should do this again more often 😉
