TNR 26-12-2024 Boxing Day Bonus

The Digger @Sponds

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete & Butty

Crew: Slim, Butty, Stunt

Route: Bolly Maze, Canal, Clarence Mill Bridge, Palmerston Street, Ingersley Road, Oakenbank, Robin Hood, Jumper Lane, Blaze Hill, Whaley Bridge road, Bakestonedale road, Gritstone, Sponds, Dale top, parting of the ways, Quarries descent, Moorside lane, Pott Shrigley, Bolly, home.

Conditions: Still, cool, cloud inversion.

Notes:

With Thursday falling on Boxing day, twas a mini crew for the last TNR of the year.

Pics from daytime walkers above the clouds suggested that we too should climb out of the murk on a dry but cool evening.

Clarence Mill by Night #2

The bigger question was whether any pubs would be open! Expectations were low, and Butty had brought some whisky just in case.

Butty on the Bridge

Our initial route involved heading up through Bolly to see which pubs were open, lights on at a couple, but the Poachers cold and dark 🙁

Time for an oakenbank climb to see if maybe the Robin Hood is open

Just high enough to get above the mists, and see clear skies, we stop – lights off and gaze at ethereal lights behind us, and hear owls, before pushing on into Rainow.

Lo the Robin Hood is lit and peopled. No matter that the pale ale froths and finishes before a pints worth is dispensed, Wainwrights will suffice! A nice sit down and chat in a reasonably busy pub is very pleasant, but we must ride more.

Feeling cold post pub the Jumper lane climb soon warms, more viewpoints to take in, then the main road – which is clear and quiet. Pete’s favourite clump of trees is sillouhetted in the starlight, Orion is clear, and planets, satellites and aircraft aplenty.

Bushmills at the Trig

With the cold air having sunk into the valley’s and no wind, it is a perfect evening to ponder at Sponds.

A dram at the Trig

Butty dispenses generous measures of Bushmills which slide down nicely as we admire the rather weird glowing lights of the towns and villages under the foggy blanket. A bearing is taken on the red light almost due west which Stunt tells us is a mast Wrexham way, Winter Hill and Holme Moss both very clear too. (Post ride analysis indicates Moel Y Parc transmitter just SE of St Asaph)

Looking North East from Sponds

Behind us there is a circle of light to the right of Whaley where the roads go around a hill.

A shooting star tells us what an amazing sight we are seeing – so rare that a second dram is in order.

Time eventually to head across to Dale top, where we accept that there will be no pub finish, and opt for routes to take us homewards.

Butty goes straight down by the wall, whilst Pete and I head for the quarries descent and then back via Pott Shrigley into Bolly.

A very special evening to be out, and a great end to the TNR riding year.

Smiffy rides acoustic

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Troll, Dr S, Smiffy, Stunt

Pub: Ruth

Route: Bolly maze, Grimshaw lane, “under Nancy”, back of Kerridge via north farm, Waulkmill wood, Ingersley vale, Poachers snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to Gristone Trail, 1975 stone, Sponds, Dale top, quarry descent, moorside lane, road to Poachers.

Conditions: cold and clear

Notes:

Finally a cool clear still(ish) evening for our ride. After the jumbo numbers last week, back to a more normal crew level – a plucky fully acoustic sextet! (Smiffy keeping with the xmas light festooned hard tail).

A northern classic route to get up high – the observation of celestial bodies starts early with Dr S breaking out the star app and id’ing Venus and Saturn in the ecliptic.

Headed for Waulkmill Wood

Some mutterings about being overdressed by the time we crest the cattle grid on Nancyside lane, then muddy slitheriness from the track down to the kissing gate at Waulkmill wood – which itself was particularly slidey!

Once past the Poachers all tarmac – 3 way lights at the end of Spuley lane and Shrigley road are a bit annoying, and lots of cars parked for the Carols by candlelight at the Church (was this the source of the beam of light in the sky we could see from bottom of blaze hill?)

Digger at Sponds

More star spotting at the gritstone – Orion and the Pliades clearly visible low down, and we now add Mars and Jupiter to the eye spy of planets.

Whiskey Macs at the 75 stone

Thoughts of being too warm quickly vanish by the time we assemble at the 1975 stone for some whisky mac – it being sub 5, but also to mark the Solstice tomorrow.

Sub 5 rule at the 75 stone

Strange sillouhettes on Sponds ridge turn out to be a fencing machine, and the farmer is seemingly determined to make access to the trig point difficult with the gate tied shut. It will take more than that to stop the TNR though.

Fine views and art pics later – time to descent the wet grassy slopes to get across to Dale Top.

Sponds & Starscape

Active descent past the plantation and down the side of the quarry is always fun whatever the time of year, then it’s route one to the Poachers to see what the change in management has brought…

Cushions and a different font on the menu is the answer.

The weekend project pale cloudy ale is the beer of choice, the small gammon really is a kids size meal shocker, and some rearranging of veg/beans to the correct pie and potatoes is needed.

Retro 80’s xmas classic videos are on the TV, some geeky salsa fargo talk, deep astrophysics discussion between El Pres and the Troll, whilst Steve and Stunt compare notes on cockapoos and miniature dachunds!

Ruth arrives in her new Tradey Lady persona and seems to be enjoying life on the building site 🙂

Axis of Evil is of the double leffe variety, and ÂŁ4 beers make the bill much more palatable (unless you went for the pump of doom!)

Buff over the nose time on the ride home!!

TNR 12-12-2024 Christmas Cocktails ’24

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Butty, Troll, 3 Sheds, Eric, Dunc, Croxy, Bern, G, Lee, Mark, Dr S, Smiffy, Stunt

Pub: El Pud

Route: Back Eddisbury Lane, Zag, Teggs cocktail bar, Sadlers way, lower Teggs, Smithy, reverse ressie to Bob’s Bench, Leathers.

Conditions: Mild & Dry

Notes:

The annual festive feast edition with the famous cocktails to precede equals largest crew of the year!

Country members Eric and Phil are back for the evening, Biggus is rumoured to be riding again – but is struck down by lurgy at the last minute.

PTD tries to get a less token ride plan approved at the rendevous, but with several folks running behind it’s too late to change the format (maybe next year?) so a long procession to the cocktail viewpoint, with laggards joining along the way. PTD not to be deterred takes an enthusiastic sub group down from windyways to the lower track into Teggs for a hint of climb first.

On offer at the table d’TNR are:

Trolls Mocha Espresso Martini & Dunc’s Rusty Nail accompanied by Croxy’s warm pigs in blankets, Trolls warm roasted chestnuts, and Smiffy’s sausage rolls (veggie option too) with mustard or cranberry jelly!

Tis a mini feast, the chestnuts prove a little tricky to extracate from their skins, and the mustard is extra zingy, the cranberry is a good option (assuming you don’t drop it all over the table!)

Smiffy wins the bike decoration prize with impressive frame illuminations!

For part two (there’s more!) we head to Bob’s bench via saddlers way (damp and green…maybe no less technical than the normal Teggs descent?) before working our way along the lower teggs trail to the langley reservoir.

Some actual uphill to the Leathers before heading to Bob’s bench – with an extra little climb and the singletrack from just inside the wall at the road – for those who fancied it.

PTD treats us to his Green Cocktail of Blue Curacuo, Cider and Brandy, followed by the Black one – now to be know as Shubbery Sludge – but more accurately a Rumtoft of pear and bilberry from the garden at the Shrubberies which has been infusing for 4 years! with a fruity sherbert nose it’s a big hit. With Nurse Jackies famous mince pies to finish we have been treated to aperitif, savoury and sweet. Right who’s up for a three course xmas dinner then!!

The leathers has had a wee makeover with immaculately sanded table tops and trendy grey paintwork.

John and El Pres do final menu checks and changes (with El Pud taking over Nic’s place).

Lighter ales (and the odd tactical soft drink) are favoured for the first pint, as we spread over three tables and make ourselves at home (we actually have the place to ourselves!)

Much catching up with the less regular riders, and topics quickly move off health and family into more bantery and occasionally bikey blokey boll*c#s.

The food is excellent, and portions generous…the sticky toffee pudding defeats all but the most determined, and the cheese wallahs leave biscuits.

The president is at the fulcrum of the Axis of Evil and it’s a double whisky night for him two weeks in a row!!

An evening to raise a glass to all our riding fraternity, here’s to more riding, camaraderie and adventures large and small next year. Biggus and Coley you were missed, and we look forward to seeing you soon 🙂

TNR 5-12-2024 Running the Rapids

Witches Cottage

Words by Alex , Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: Adrian and biscuit

Route: Zag, Charity, Narnia, Hardingland, St Dunstans

Conditions: Excessive surface water, mild, windy.

Notes:

With a band of seriously torrential rain having only just cleared, the quartet of determined riders arrive at the bottom of the zag meet point – to find a slightly grumpy Pete who having given Dunc permission to push the start back, failed to check the whatsapp updates, and had been waiting for 25 minutes. Luckily he had brought extra layers to put on to keep warm.

With more rain forecast and no table booked, we opt for a classic combo with an early to the pub to secure food.

Rivulets are pushing soggy piles of fallen leaves into odd shapes on the zag. But the sheer quantity of recent rain has cleaned the roads nicely, albeit with a goodly flow of water along the gutters.

On tarmac chazza the sandy section near the top is flooded a good foot deep and is renamed la plage du charitie for the evening.

Pausing at Charity

Charity proper running like a river, Narnia not as muddy as feared, but a rare wet hardingland (plus a glowering walker).

View from Narnia

A superb red crescent moon low in the sky, and the odd star visible as the weather front has departed to leave clearish skies for a while.

Decent momentum needed to cross the stream at the bottom the of steps in lower teggs, before the band of showers arrives.

The Dunny promises us food and shelter, and does not dissapoint.

Delicious Jaipur, two log burners, and a nice set of menu choices.

The chicken club sandwich with chips is the best value choice, but the pie fetishists are well catered for with steak and kidney pudding, and steak and ale pie!

We are soon putting the world to rights, exploring old sayings – apparently Chris’s mum used to say that you should never look at a new moon through glass!?

The music is triggering the Pete’opeida of nostalgic musical memories, Adrian arrives and confirms that he saw Hendrix in ’67 – when he was only a support act to the Small Faces.

Biscuit is slightly disappointed that there are so few people in the pub to get attention from.

At whisky o’clock the choices are investigated, and we are convinced by our young barman to try the bargain blended Japanese bottle – It’s not bad, and excellent value….so the president demands that we have a second.

Just as well we are fortified for the road, and it’s raining and into a headwind to get home.

Somehow we managed to forget to play pool..Bernard would never have let that happen!!

Next week the Christmas dinner ride….

TNR 28-11-2024 Tigers on Vaseline

Up on the GT #2

Words by Pete ; Photos by Pete & Dunc

Crew : Lee, Dunc, Smiffy, El Pres, Croxy, Butty, Pete , Troll

Pub: Ruth

Route : Zag (muster 1)  – Calrofold – Lidgetts (muster 2)  – KB – Poachers Snicket – Oakenbank – Kiskhill La – Jumper La – Highway Man – Bakestonedale Rd – Sponds – The Whistling Gate – Moorside Lane – PS – Bolly Skate Park – Middlewood Way or Towpath to The Wharf

Conditions : High cloud , cold 3-4C , clear visibility, seriously muddy in bits

Notes

This week’s ride is a Lee Wadsworth production . A start and end in Macc evening, with a northern circuit centred around Bollingtonia sandwiched in the middle.

Lidgetts Lane View

I will begin the story at muster point 2 , at the Lidgetts end of the KB. Dunc arrives a couple of minutes behind me , on the re-shell bike . Soon we see the lights of the Southern Posse.

In an evening of “mechanicals”, Lee arrives with a problem with his lights already (does that count as a mechanical ? – I think so)  . It seems that bracket is loose on his handlebars because he has lost the rubber spacer. With a small hint of smugness , I pull out a little roll of black electrical tape from my rucksack and a bodge-it-till-we-are-home fix is sorted .

20241128-IMG_5947iPhone 14 Pro

We opt to ride the length of the Kerridge bridleway , which becomes quite entertaining – many bits are very muddy indeed . It is fun just trying to stay upright and heading forwards. Thanks to the  late David Bowie for nicking a line from his 1972 song “Hang Onto Yourself” for the title of this report :  “We move like tigers on vaseline”. It felt appropriate .

Hopping the bike over the kissing gate

A brief pause outside The Poachers as we re-group and have a discussion about the next bit of our route tonight . I feel a slight pang of guilt at this point as I know we will not be returning here tonight for our post ride refreshment.

Near the col of Oakenbank I catch up with Funky Dunc , who is having issues with his drivetrain . The chain has hopped off the back of the cassette and jammed against the spokes . He has got it unjammed Ok though .

Our climb continues up to Jumper Lane – the red lights of the distant skyscrapers of Manc-hatten are visible at this height , beautifully framed by the blackness of the curve of the hills in between.

Top of Blaze Hill

We regroup at the top of Blaze Hill – which I will always think of as “The Highwayman” even though the pub has been shut for many years now. After a minute or so’s rest we realise we are only 6 – not the original eight. Dunc & Croxy are missing. I dial Dunc to discover his mechanical woes are continuing , so he has decided to return home and meet us at the Wharf on a more viable steed. Croxy appears just as I get off the phone.

Onward and upward . The view of Manchester and the Cheshire plain are getting better and brighter the higher we climb.  The thin cloud layer up high is nicely underlit.

Brass Monkeys at Sponds

By the time we are approaching Sponds I finally feel like I am not over-insulated and that my layers , gloves and helmet liner are keeping me from the wind and the cold.  Its a bit muddy getting to the Whistling gate at Dale Top , but it is playing its spooky tune reliably when we arrive.

This week we descend straight down next to the wall towards “Ratboy’s place” at the edge of Lyme Park . Its fun and fast with quite a few hidden rocks to aid the concentration.

Back along Moorside Lane and it feels like everyman for himself towards the Bolly skateboard park .  Here we have a TNR first of the sub five rule being observed in central Bollingtonia . Lee has generously brought some Courvoisier VS , and some posh and tasty mince pies . It may still be November, but it’s beginning to feel like Xmas .

Sub 5 rule

Onward to Macc . At the AZ side of the Rainbow Bridge Smiffy and I encounter a returning Funky Dunc astride his reliable Fortitude . Smiffy takes the Towpath and turns up the power. Dunc and I take the middle wood way tarmac bits to Tesco and then climb to the Wharf.

We are allowed to stash our bikes in the Beer Garden , but this involves traversing a mini junkyard of dumped stuff . Chris the former landlord  has moved on ..to work for Ossett brewery . Its no surprise then that the Wharf is now serving four or five of that brewery’s beers . Not that that is a problem ! The Silver King pale ale goes down well , as does Kimono and a 4% Stout called jet.

We get a whole section of the pub (by the fire) to ourselves , it is a relaxed and warm place to hang out.

The pizza arrives when I am on my second pint , and we certainly don’t go hungry. I have to confess to ordering a large mighty meaty ! Ruth arrives and it seems to strangely coincide with the reaching of the ribaldry zone.

Somehow its a little after 11 , and we are all departing homeward , after just three beers and no axis of evil !

This week’s learning points :

Airbike brand cassettes are made of cheese !

Always carry some black electrical tape

TNR 21-11-2024 First Snow of the Season

Alex disappears into the Blizzard #3

Words by Alex , Photos and Vid by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Troll, PTD, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Eric, Bern, Stunt

Route: Backeddisbury Lane, Zag, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, Ressies, Kings Head

Conditions: Snow showers, c5-10cm fresh snow, old snow and frozen puddles underneath.

Notes:

Snow had fallen Monday night, with some TNR’ers able to go play Tuesday daytime, then sunny and sub zero in the hills until now when more snow showers due.

The weather is a little lively

With conditions looking good, and the added bonus of a rare Eric appearance, ten intrepid riders assembled two by two at the bottom of the zag, and almost to a man deciding that they might have overdressed!

Charity Lane gathering

Dunc shows off his new 18 bikes steel hardtail freshly built up from the Tarn – it’s seriously long – a good half a wheel length over an orange 5. Dunc claims that it doesn’t feel that long, although does admit it has a longer turning circle than most bikes! Butty is on the Liteville – having broken his ebike motor in the snow on Tuesday (the Spesh warranty is proving very valuable!)

Claims of being too hot quickly evaporate in the snowy landscape, and route discussions lead to a go to charity and assess from there..so up the zag over lovely grippy sqeaky fresh snow, with creaking and cracking from the iced puddles underneath – snow riding is a very acoustic experience!

Some mistiness at windyways and down to walker barn as local atmospherics condense the moisture in the air, and more snow falling as we ascend charity to the off road section.

Hopping da fence

The climb is looking good, but once crested there is a lot of snow in the centre of the lane, PTD and Butty lead a splinter group to Narnia via the bombhole and swoopy bits in the trees, the main party take the high road on the RHS down to the gate, and Dunc takes the burly hardtail route one down the lane.

TJ the intrepid

The side trail is good with only one short section where the snow is too deep to progress without a short walk, Dunc navigates the main trail fairly easily, and the Narniaites have had muddy slippyness in the trees.

Alex disappears into the Blizzard #1

More route discussion concludes (eventually) that keeping going down chazza is the right answer – and despite doomladen fears of huge wet pools of meltwater – its smooth fresh snow all the way down – just need to avoid catching a handlebar on the side in the ruts either side of the centre near the (narnia gate) start.

Swithering over route choice

Extension also fun, the driving wet snow in our faces up to standing stone less so.

Luckily it stops soon after so onwards and upwards to a WhiskyMac stop at Dan’s bench.

Whisky Mac #2

More splintering in choice of descent – and El Pres breaks protocol on a solo white rabbit descent, does’t wait for the rest of us and is in the Pub sipping a pint whilst we wait at the Leathers wondering what to do.

Where is Chris Palmer ?

Slushy roads down through Langley and Sutton probably the worst conditions of the ride.

Fireside table, inception to sup, and hearty food soon have us warming through and bantering. The veggie brigade are astounded at the quantity of Hallumi in the battered “not fish” option….cheese sweats tonight??

In the Kings Head #1

The custom MkII escort rally version – Eric has been touring a very expensive toyshop ÂŁ150k and up, so the question is if you had the money would you? Royal family can afford it – crown estate reform as part of the revolutionary zeal at one end of the table. What can’t you drink due to excess in your youth…most diverse answers being Mead and Martini Rosso!

In the Kings Head #2

Three pints good, but a whisky for the road, and needed – hailing/sleeting on wet roads on the way back.

Snowball fight post midnight reported in Higher Poynton. Badgers sensibly tucked up in their setts tonight we assume.

Return to UB

Top snowy riding, back to wet filth next week!

TNR 14-11-2024 Beaver moon over the mists

Chris at the Zag Rendezvous

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, Butty, TJ, Dunc, Troll, G, Stunt

Route: Backeddisbury lane, Zag, Charity, Extension, Tea rooms, Shining Tor, over the moors across Andrew’s Edge to Hooleyhey lane, Ewrin lane, Pike road, Blaze Hill, Poachers.

Conditions: Cold, Still, mist in places, wetter than expected trails.

Notes:

Pete puts out a go high, go big route idea on an evening with no wind and after a week of almost no rain.

The 6pm start means that dunc will RV at the tea rooms, and the E bikers will catch us circa charity.

Under the almost full “beaver” moon in a clear sky, we could almost ride without lights (I remember doing that many years back in the pre LED lighting era when good moonlight was nearly as good as our lights were!). Before we get going we admire the fully refurbished troll bike – all moving parts are new, and a new front tyre to boot.

Climbing up the Zag we can see a mist bank rolling off the meadows by Windyways and over the track into the fields towards Teggs. Descending to Walker Barn we come out into clear air again, on the main road up to Charity the valley to our left is blanketed in white, but the tops are all looking clear.

Butty is waiting for us at the national park marker (taking arty photos), and by the start of Charity proper G has also caught us (having passed a solo rider and invited him to tag along – only to be politely rebuffed).

Resting a moment on Charity

The inevitable werewolf jokes come into play whilst we regroup, the resolutely solo rider passes us, and we take on Charity – with occasional mist pockets to add some jepoardy.

Cold air at Forest chapel, and back into the fog at Bottom of the Oven, but of course a warming climb to the tea rooms. No sign of Dunc the the lead riders arrive, but his lights come round the far bend well ahead of our laggards, and we are complete.

Time may be getting a little tight for the plan A, so Stunt goes into route progress auditor mode and chivvies us along the high track and over the gates to the Shining Tor down and up.

What is it about the ground conditions – mix of geotex fabric, mesh and peaty mud that is so energy sapping!?

Some trig hugging at the top, but no time to faff, and Pete is getting his excuses in early about ground conditions being “wetter than expected”. He’s not wrong as it’s a proper swamp at the turn, the alternative to Pym’s chair is a lot longer, so we man up and get going.

A helping hand at The Stile

It does get a lot better once we start to descend, the long grass although wet is a good alternative to the main muddy trail, and actually quite grippy where it’s starting to frost!

Climbing Andrew's Edge

The amount of fun this section contained might have been directly proportional to the degree of waterproofness of your footwear!

In contrast the final downhills to Hooleyhey lane were fast and firm – maybe the grass that has grown over top has done the job!? 20:20 hours and all is well vs pub ETA. Cold tired legs mean that dead mans hill is a bit of a grind, but El Pres must be able to smell the beer because he finds new energy to head past Dunc to make the E bikers turn up their power a notch!

More mist at the bottom of Blaze hill!! but no casualties and into the pub at 20:45 as promised by Cheesy Chips himself.

Sleepy Badger stout at only 4.5% is a must, although the usual suspects do the taps of doom. What’s this – PTD and Dr S posting pics of climbing with whisky, on a Thursday! Well it is a fine night for it 🙂

WNB Richard (who helped Ratboy organise the enduro) passes round a pump complete with enclosed toolkit and CO2 cannister, which having been unclaimed from the Enduro is now being auctioned off in aid of Bolly festival. Tis a cunningly designed bit of kit, which is rapidly diassembled on our table, and eventually put back together! G has the winning bit and it will now be a TNR team burden to be carried by someone who has done something silly. G will carry it initially for being silly enough to buy it in the first place 😉

El Pres frustrates Pete who is getting second beers in, by asking for “this” but not knowing the name of his pint – situation de escalates with all getting a decent pint of the right colour (Phew!).

Ribaldry zone is eventually reached, fond memories of Dempsey and Makepeace (not to be confused with Cagney and Lacey). Paddy’s children in need ride (with blaze hill training) triggers Raleigh Chopper, Grifter and Boxer chat – with agreement that they were all sh*te but some might still buy one for the nostalgia – Pete had a mate who sold one for >ÂŁ500 a few years back having kept it from childhood.

Speaking of retro, TJ has acquired a Royal Enfield (subcontinent constructed) as his latest motorbike. We expect to see him with leather helmet and goggles next time!

With TJ & G talk of the coming alpine season is also inevitable…

Also inevitable – there was a lot of climbing tonight – so was it a Munro night? Dunc (a.k.a. Stato) did not do Charity – but posts 666m of ascent (2185ft), Butty – who was with us, but did 2x Oakenbank extra gives 1,014m (3,327 ft)..so is it possible we did the magic 3000? Map geek Pete does the a route check on OS Maps to conclude that from Bolly Heights it was 2688ft. So a decent quantity of ascent but well short of a Munro.

A fine Tamavulin to finish before a cold ride home….but perhaps not as cold as it will be next week!!

TNR 7-11-2024 Spunch Ericquest Special

20241107-IMG_8569

Spunchmeisters Andy & Mark operating from the Bolly Brewery Tap room in town.

Bike Spunch teams El Pres & Pete, Croxy & Phil M, PTD & Smithy, Dunc & Stunt.

Normal Spunch Ginny, Jane & Ruth

Pub: G & Lee, Mawds & Simon

Route: 2 Hours to get as many 20 point controls as possible from 50 scattered between the edge of town, teggs, the forest and langley/sutton.

Conditions: Cool and dry.

Notes:

With mid-week urban spunching visiting Macc on a Thursday, El Pud generously pud on a TNR Bike Spunch special as a side quest which was much appreciated!

HQ for the night is the recently relocated Bolly Brewery tap room not too far from the Warf pub. A former bakery its roomy with urban post industrial chic, and food provided by a pop up pizza team.

We are issued the maps on arrival – so have some time to work out route strategies whilst getting the maprun tech to work on relevant devices (the iphone quite beep is still a thing it seems!).

By 6:45 ish it’s off to the start and away we go into the night.

The controls have plenty of “traps” designed to catch out those who have not examined the map in detail, so just because there seem to be a lot in one area, doesn’t mean they are all easy/simple to get!!

Fast forward two hours and all four teams are back within the cutoff, and the debriefing begins over some fine bolly ale (Eastern Nights for the first pint).

Discussion points – the control on the corner of Langley reservoir – was actually on the road not the path round the ressie to the steps…but you could get it by going right to the edge of the grass bank. Teggs controls were sneaky and involved some doubling back and extra climb, and the lanes out the back of Langley were also steeper than you think!

El Pres cried foul having observed Croxy & Troll going the wrong way down a one way street (Barracks lane!). Whispers of an off from Pete, and celebration from Team Tythy for beating the E team (and everyone else)

20241107-IMG_8568iPhone 14 Pro

No badgers reported this week, although the weed smoking youth in the car at the bottom of the white rabbit ascent seemed to be worried about bears!?

results:

Team Tythy 30 Controls 600 points 18 seconds to spare.

E Smiths 28 Controls 560 points 11 mins to spare

Croxy & Phil 26 Controls 520 points 2 mins 37 seconds to spare

Pete & Chris 23 Controls 460 points 8 mins to spare.

20241107-IMG_8566iPhone 14 Pro

The Wag spunchers had enjoyed their urban adventure too, we get to catch up with Mawds and Simon and others from the various venn diagrams of social circles and Spunch.

Lee and G also arrive bemoaning other committments that have prevented them from participating in the Spunch fun.

Phil the barman is now in charge of the Tap room – so friendly faces all round 🙂

Pizza’s from the van were excellent, as was the choice of beer – all the standard Bolly brews at the bar, plus twelve guest taps at the back. The Four Eels london porter was decent, but winner of the weirdest brew was the Estonian Dark Lager – looks like stout, but tastes like a proper euro lager with flavour.

El Pres gets us a rather good blended whisky in at last orders to finish off an excellent evening.

There will be some tired legs in the morning…

TNR 31-10-2024 Follow The Badger

Words by Pete, Pics by Butty ( with his new phone!) & Pete

Crew : PTD , Butty, Troll, El Pres, Pete , Bern

Route : Bolly Maze – Towpath – Hurst Lane – Kerridge – Nancyside Lane – Partial KB – Waulkmill Wood descent – Poachers Snicket – Blaze Hill – Jumper Lane – Oaken bank – Spuley Lane – Pott Shrigley – Long Lane – Beeston Brow  – Shrigley Rd – The Poachers

Conditions : mild, no rain , a bit muddy in places

Notes :

With last week being a Forest Fest I plumped for a Bolly start and a Bolly Finish, with minimal resistance from El Pres . We ended up with a half dozen riders – more than I was anticipating !

20241031-IMG_8511iPhone 14 Pro

And once I knew Paul was in the crew this week , I didn’t even worry about a route plan – I knew he wouldn’t be backward in coming forward with ideas.

With the clocks having gone back it is properly dark by 6pm rendezvous . To add to the spookiness a number of teenagers wandered past the Maze in monster/ghoul outfits.

20241031-IMG_8513iPhone 14 Pro

Paul has embraced the Halloween theme and arrives with a giant spider attached to his rucksack !

A plan is formed to go roughly South East and then loop back Northwards . Up to Nancyside on tarmac , and then a brief venture along the KB to let us descend Waulkmill Wood. This turns out to be slippier than I had imagined, but does enable the crew to get a good view at some Dark Honey Fungus at the base of a big tree on the path of the bridleway.

Dark Honey Fungus #2

Contemporary library photo

At the Poachers we regroup and a route debate ensues. I had pitched in the idea of Oakenbank – Jumper La – Blaze Hill descent …which went down like the proverbial “ham sandwich at a Bar mitzvah” with Butty . So we made it a bit more single-speed friendly – straight up Blaze Hill to get the b@stard steep climb done first .

20241031-IMG_8519iPhone 14 Pro

Arriving , and regrouping at the end of Jumper Lane , we discover that Bern & Phil are missing – they have gone too far up the hill ….after vain attempts to call them get no answer .. Paul volunteers to chase after them ..at which point we see their lights coming back down the hill .

From here on I agree some mandatory regrouping points  !

Oakenbank is muddy then wonderfully dry then muddy again . Onward down Spuley but we have to hold back as we have a poor badger running the same way, spooked by our arrival .

It’s tarmac all the way now , apart from the short steep climb up Green Lane and the tasty descent after the summit.

The Poachers is fairly busy – a good turn out by the WNBs this week and the Simon & Karl team . So bags of Crisps are needed to stave off the hunger whilst the staff catch up with the food orders . Saltaire 4.7 California Common goes down well , as does the Dortmunder (as a palate cleanser) . Then its on to a 6% pudding stout which is sweet and wonderful.

A small but perfectly formed AOE remain late in the hostelry . It may have even got to a second dram .

Words by Pete – who wasn’t there ! , Photos by Butty

Crew : Funky , Butty, Dr S, Lee , El Pres, 3sheds , TJ , Bern

Route : Something Macc Forest based “ Duncan Chandler: Route now charity, narnia, hardingland, Ford, Smithy then another loop of the forest with rusty nail”

Notes :

(Interpreted by Pete from the WhatsApp dialogue, and in no particular order. So we get a record of the ride !

Captain Funky D is in charge of Operations this week

Manflu means that many of the core team (and AOE) are absent . And jet lag is the absence excuse for the jet setters.

Plan A was the full Chumby Circuit and a St Dunstan’s finish – for some reason the Dunny response was “not tonight” , so The Leathers became Plan B. And sorting out food orders in person necessitated a change of route plan.

Lee’s arrival is delayed by a Light Issue . After this is resolved and he joins the crew he  has some sort of big mechanical mid ride (rock vs Santa Cruz) which snaps off the rear mech hanger.

A “bodge it to get us to the pub” fix was devised with assistance from 3sheds , Bern , Dr S & TJ .

Loose sheep on Chazza

Butty has trouble with tubeless – getting a hole in the tread on the downhill track. It is soft all the way to the Leathers. Here , once parked up outside it becomes “the tyre that heals itself” .

“Phil Ball: Part ride report:  technical hill climb challenge was not liked by the puffs in the group.” I believe most viewed this as a push up hill, not a ride.

“Mark Butty: Two new downhills, both steep, full of leaves, and fun (for some)” .

“ and exploding effin tubeless tyres  were one of the pub topics.

“ Trevor Jackson: We also discussed serious topics such as how to measure the speed of light and the force of gravity, though the gravity topic moved onto t1ts. “

“Lee Wadsworth: Looks like I have obliterated another derailleur. That’s 2 in two months ? “

“ Mark Butty: Another update for the journal… All left early as the axis of evil brothers were absent, we obviously need a parity or erasure encoded redundancy.

“Duncan Chandler: It was noted by smithy John that the trouble causers were missing.

“ Bern : ….. in fact, he seemed to really miss them!!???”

The evening was bereft of an AOE
