Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Back of the Moon, 2 Sided Valley, Wildboarclough, Standing Stone, Just right of the RHS descent, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Dry, Mild, misty higher up.

Gap Yaar = arrival early by Slim!

This week El Pres suggests getting over the moor below Shutlingsloe and into Wildboarclough, it’s been a while so excellent idea!

Huge tyre tracks in the biggest puddle on the zig are a new hazard!

Charity is suprisingly dry and rocky.

PTD has brought some whisky which we sample at the bench just off the standing stone track whilst we debate about the best way to the back of Piggford moor,
with a suggestion we push up the back of the moon descent, as the top bit is drier.
IMG_1969

IMG_1972

The logic is good, but it’s a steep push, on the tops we are into mist, dropping down across the moor its moist but not too boggy, although under the mesh is very wet!

We cast broken spectres ahead of us as we feel our way towards the 2 sided valley,

where the top section of trail is now very narrow and deeply sunken so the only way across is to have your up hill leg out almost perpendicular off the saddle!!

WhatsApp Video 2018-11-17 at 07.50.02(1)

Luckily its soon over, and the rest is flowly and fun (apart from the stiles)

I don’t know what it is about the little section from the farm to the wildboarclough road, but its always a real pleasure to ride, this time with crunchy fallen leaves for added effect.

Time is a ticking, and at Standing stone some vote for a direct route to pub, whilst others follow Butty to a new “right of the RHS” trail which is good…and good it is, weaving across the contour lines, its less steep but all the better for it! A new favourite!

Regrouping at Sutton Hall, the Titanic offering is excellent (we drink it dry), food and table service excellent as usual, and Dunky arrives for the Ribaldry zone.

Some early leavers due to Friday committments, others perhaps slip towards an AoE…

Very mild for the time of year.

TNR 8th November 2018: Tour De Teggs

IMG_1891

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew:
PTD, El Pres, Troll, Butty , Pete

Pub: Dunc & Biggus Nickus

Route : BL , Zig (but no Zag) Old Buxton Rd , Rear Entrance to Teggs, Several Loops around the top, Steps descent , Five Clouds .

Conditions : Blowy and getting colder. Slippy near the bottom of Teggs !

Notes:

Paul took up Ops leadership once again 🙂

We got stuck in a “groundhog day” type vortex of Teggs Nose footling about . But it was excellent fun.

Paul showed us how he has knackered his knees over the years on the viscous little up and downs that surround the top of Teggs Nose.

There was at least one that we all refused…it being near vertical .

IMG_1897

We visited the little sheep fold / artisan shelter at the summit twice…on the second occasion Paul produced a wee “Sharpener” to prepare for us for the descent.

So , as I lose my front wheel grip in a slide near the big gate to the car park , and land with a heavy thump on my right thigh…..was it the sharpener, was it the far too highly inflated tyres, was it the tyres ? or my own inability to ride . …. Luckily the only damage is a big bruise .

Now to the thorny issue of our post ride refreshment venue …there is some debate but El Presidente decrees a visit to the Five Clouds…

IMG_1923

and it is then a bit of “everyman for himself” until we get to the town centre .

IMG_1918

it is a fine establishment where you can wheel your bike through the bar and park it inside ….and the beer choice is mighty fine .

IMG_1932 (1)

A 30% discount at Pizza Express just for drinking in Five Clouds ! marvellous , and they deliver .

Our very own Eric and Ernie ….(Biggus and Dunky) arrive to bring The ribaldry and Tomfoolery to an appropriate crescendo.

IMG_1914

A fine night indeed…

TNR 1-11-2018 There’s no short cut to Axe Edge!

IMG_7345

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, Slim, TJ, Butty, Mr Inc, Stunt

Route: BL, New Road, Cat, Axe Edge, 3 Shires, Cutthorne, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Clear Skies, light winds, very cold

Notes:

Following last week’s trend of declaring a route “goal”, tonight Axe edge is declared! (and it meets the low stile count required by Mr Inc’s dodgy arm)

Under beautiful starry skies there are soon layers shed on the climb up, a mini top gear challenge emerges to inject some interest, at the commuter’s favourite straight on the group splits, but the straight up boys decide that bottom of the oven is a silly idea, and turn left to rejoin Buxton road close to the Lamaload turn.

It’s always further than you think past the Cat until the little right turn, and it’s always further up the hill to the track than you think!!

Arriving after an hour of up-hilling, the clear night and breeze up high leads to some serious chillin!

Tis no place to hang about, extra layers reapplied (and then some!)..we set out across the moor…its damp but not muddy..of more concern is that some mist is forming.

Arriving at the wall/sheep pen, it doesn’t look quite right, but a crossing of the wall is remembered.

IMG_1858

Tech to the rescue suggests hiking the bike over is the right thing to do, whence it becomes clear we usually arrive from a marginally different angle 🙂

Mutterings about standing in the cold as some photography is performed (..”the Philistines !”).

IMG_1861

Trail soon becomes familiar again, we hit the fast wide track, onto the lane, down the farm track (in good condition), and finally the drop off at the stream (well done Butty).

A huge meteor is seen (by Stunt) waiting his turn (verified by twitter you know!)

Twisty, rocky, slabby and chunky and it’s 3 shires bridge before you know it (with the damage hidden until its discovery later…) .

Sadly no wee dram to warm us up, just the sandy gritty loose Cutthorne climb.

With cold fingers and faces we hit it with relish!

8:30 at the lane, and there’s time for Chumby (no rest for the wicked)

Shiny Chumby gate is still technically shonky as it has no hinges (unless you count one scruffy loop of farmers twine).

Middle very loose, sides quite slippy, it pays to pay attention!

After the watersplash new fencing is evident (also from cut thorne to the main road) someone’s been busy this summer!

More ruggedness down the brook, through the ford and down to the gate at Wildboarclough.

Excitement over, weary legs take is easy along the valley and up to standing stone.

We’ve made good time, but not enough for anything else than route one down the road to ensure food can be ordered.

El Pres duly finds his Pub Proximity mojo and arrives first and gets 6 meals in, before the kitchen can close.

Lots of dark beers on offer, pumkin stout rather good, White Nancy or Hoegaarden for those who like it paler.

Excellent service at the table, which is just as well because no one fancies getting up in a hurry.

IMG_1865

Trollish comments set a ribaldry edge with a lack of pub mates to help us along.

IMG_1863

Very cold ride home, and legs would be feeling a big ride the following morning.

TNR 25-10-2018 Bowstones Boys

IMG_1855

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete & Butty

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Butty, TJ, Slim, Stunt

Route: BL, Hurdsfield Road, Well lane/Swanscoe Lane/Lidgetts Lane, back of Kerridge, Waulkmill Wood, snicket to poachers, Pott Shrigley, Bakestonedale road to the Gritstone Trail, Bowstones, Park Moor descent, double track to Moorside lane, grass climb to Dale Top, Quarries descent back to Moorside Lane, road to Poachers.

Conditions: Cool, mizzly yet clear, damp trails, stiff breeze higher up.

Notes:

Proper first dark from the off, leaves on the ground, damp in the air autumnal ride. While the rest of us debate what the right clothing choice will have been by the end of the ride (4 of 6 still showing exposed legs) ,El Pres chooses Bowstones as our destination and we make up how to get there on the go.

Hearty hello’s to/from Pete’s mates (Ricky et al) who are emerging from a house on Hurdsfield road, and we chat to the trio by the shonky gate at the start of Kerridge. They are heading Bolly way via Stypersons for some low level fun.

IMG_1842

The fine mizzle that can’t quite decide if it’s rain (but plays havoc with glasses as soon as there are oncoming lights) has made it’s mark on the trails, wet roots, slithery mud..and the slabs are lethally slippy even in a straight line! not often you head off them for the relative safety of wet grass!

Parts of the back of Kerridge path have been widened by a digger which has scraped off the surface..looks suspiciously like hardcore could be coming next? but it would be an accessible path unconnected to a road/paved path??

Waulkmill wood covered in dry leaves for crunchy grip, snicket also able to stay dry, and its a good climb under the watchful gaze of an owl.

Some debate about going up via Blaze hill to reccy the quarry up there, but no one else fancies climbing that way. Into Pott Shrigley we go, and pass a deceased badger near the junction with the main road.

Long climb up seems to go quite quickly, perhaps the chatting, definitely helped by the tail wind, which as soon as we turn into the gritstone trail becomes apparent its freshened! Plenty of extra layers applied, those with covered legs feeling that they may have made the right call after all.

More trail improvements – the gritstone double track has had its ruts filled in and is now a smooth well packed surface most of the way to the 1975 stone..this one we approve of!

IMG_1844

Descent to Bowstones faster than we remember and less puddly, Butty leads the way and scatters the odd clump of sheep who are resting on the trail.

Wind up another notch as we hike the bikes into Park Moor, waterproof layers now applied to full wind protection!

The odd deer silhouetted against the lights of the metropolis wanders away as our lights reach over for a better look.

Descent fun and fast, it feels a long time since we did that one 🙂

WhatsApp Image 2018-10-25 at 21.19.37

Butty has a new route out, which takes us slightly higher along a double track fork and eventually to just the one ladder stile over the final wall.

A debate about flatty pedals breaks out with folk falling into opposing camps – the Funn half and half fully recylable aluminium and steel vs the full flat “dolphin Killer” plastic ones. One side certainly took the moral high ground 🙂

Time being on our side there is time for another climb up to dale top, PTD has no eBike this time but acquits himself well, not everyone cleans it as some tired (or cold?) legs need a momentary push on the steepest bits.

Quarry descent worth the effort, then no dawdling and straight down to the Poachers.

Full pub shocker! lots of well behaved but rather loud chaps are taking up most of the space, luckily by the time we’ve ordered food (bonus with a Gammon special the perfect solution) and beer they head out to the next venue on their likely pub crawl. We settle at the far end, and welcome Adrian and Dunky in quick succession.

Wincle Waller goes down at pace, TJ loyally goes with the Poynton brew, and Butty orders a Nanny State to maintain his Stoptoberness, but is nearly undermined when the barman provides Punk IPA instead. Pete takes one for the team and drinks it instead :-).  Dunky has not done so well with the Ron Hill run everyday challenge, after lergy picked up from the weekend scout camp, but 20 days in a row is still some achievement.

Some thoughts on trips for next year, some ribaldry from Adrian, a brief history of Poynton coal mining, and after the conscientious early leavers its soon time for a whisky or two in some rather lovely chunky glasses 🙂

IMG_1852

Ahh the joys of chattering teeth post pub on the descent into bolly on the way home.

TNR 18th October 2018: Belligerent Badger

Words & Photos by Pete, Badger drawing by Robert Gillmor

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Troll, TJ, Butty , Pete, Coley

Pub: Dunc & Kersh

Route : BL , New Buxton Rd , Tea Rooms, Half of Danebower, Full Chumby, Standing Stone, New BBQ site & off piste route down , Rezzies, Sutton Hall

Conditions : Beautiful clear day but cool right from the start of the ride . 4.8c at Midnight

Notes:

Lots of good factors were stacking up for a good ride….

Beautiful autumnal weather , but a pleasant cooling

A crew of (lucky) Seven riders , including Coley

PTD took the helm for route sorting – always a good sign .

It was chilly by the time we got to the Cat.

Half a Danebower, and then Paul led us carefully down Chumby from the top …i can’t really describe the exact route but it neatly avoids the chunky stuff above the waterfall.

IMG_1820

The Clough itself started dry, got decidedly wet further down and appeared to be fairly chunky on the rocks front. Or am I getting a bit nesh ?

IMG_1824

The valley road was definitely cold…cold air sinks. Up to standing stone where we could hear some bellowing stags behind us across the valley. Coley unfortunately had to leave us at this point.

As we headed towards the new camp site there were lots of hindes’ eyes glinting with our lights …no stags visible though. And we surprised a hare as well.

Off piste and a bit of a cheeky route through the woods next …then down around the rezzies and Sutton Hall it is….

Bangers & Mash gets many a vote, and washed down by pints of “Monster Mash” (…it was a graveyard smash) .

Spooky Moon

Dunc and Mr K arrive to herald the ribaldry zone

Three culprits had a moderate AOE, Butty being still ob “Stoptober” ..which is probably a good thing given what happened on the way home …..I will now switch to TJ’s account of the events …

“Badger lying in wait on the ginnel from the canal towards rainbow bridge. An area usually traveled through quickly and with some hazardous slippery wooden edging at the side of the path. The badger obviously fancied Butty’s bike (or Butty) but had underestimated the bulk of both. It all happened quickly, the Badger took a broadside and Butty’s wheel skidded to the side on the slippery wood, Butty down hard, bike on the ground and the Badger deciding he had better retreat, swiftly disappearing into the bushes, resembling mostly a large mobile humbug. Luckily, Butty was only lightly bruised, damage being a broken light bracket which was replaced en route at TJ’s (bike light emporium) in Poynton.”

TNR 11-10-2018 Double Charity

Crew: El Pres, Mr Inc, Stunt

Pub: El Pud, Dunc, Nick

Route: BL, New Road, Back Eddisbury, Zag, Walker Barn, Charity, Narina, Hardingland, Smithy, Witches cottage, Charity, Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit, White Rabbit descent, upper ressies, Five Clouds Bottle & Tap.

Conditions: Light Rain to start, lots of surface water, clear later.

Notes:

An afternoon for the weather geeks to be obsessively watching the rain radar as a huge lump moved up the country, what seemed certain was that there would be some rain about at the start of the ride..how much a good question. Another good question was if there was a direct correlation between the forecast, and the number of stuck at work excuses that came thick and fast from mid afternoon…;-)

For those who did ride, the treats started before it had begun with a spectacular orange sky topped by dark scudding clouds, like a huge fire with thick billowing smoke, with red leaves on the trees like leaping flames in the foreground.

At BL radar again consulted as the first fine drops began to fall, go East it said, so we attempted to, lights on form the off (first dark ride of the season)..New road trees still in enough leaf to keep us dry as it got heavier. A short pause in a dry patch as a particularly heavy burst swept past, and a cunning plan to head further east by cutting back up back eddisbury. Not a bad route to avoid super steep sections, overtaken by 6 friendly riders on the bridleway as the rain once again came at us, eventually forcing jackets on.

Heading up charity tarmac we overtake a few of their stragglers, and head up the offroad.

Leap frogging with them all the way down a very wet and greasy chazza and into Narnia, where they cut left just before the bench.

We having stopped to admire a wonderful red crescent moon low over the hills.

We carry on and down to witches cottage, then Hardingland, passing a stripped to the waist fell runner (did we see him last week?).

Lots of water in the streams and puddles everywhere, taking a bi of getting used to this mud stuff! Amphibians are loving it, plenty of frogs and toads on the road, we avoid them all, but some have already fallen foul of earlier traffic.

We are doing well on time, and given the muddy conditions, realise that fire road ascent back up to charity and round the tops is the best route (legs and lungs silently weeping at the thought of the slog uphill).

Just past the smithy we see the bareback runner heading downhill, pass the riders again regrouping at the fire road entrance, and head up into a now quiet forest. Conversation drops off as breathing gets more laboured, but the rain has stopped and there is less water on the trails. We are all glad to be back at charity again, pub choice is for novelty (after some quick googling closing time) and a TNR first for the Five Clouds in town near the library! we post and carry on.

Heading up there are two deer jumping the lane across to the fields, stopping we see a stag with four more does, they decide to head back into the trees.

Lots of loose big rocks down charity and the extension, but no dabs reported!

More deer just after standing stone, and a purple silk lined tweed flat cap (slightly chewed) on the path…strange happenings??

Pace is kept up to get us to Nessit, drop by Dan’s bench and then head downhill rapidly.

Wet tired and muddy we arrive..to be greeted by El Pud already sampling the ales! The Thai next door it about to close early, but Mr Inc negotiates a take away we can eat at the bar, who have offered to let us bring the bikes through to the back! 🙂

10 beers on tap, with some interesting fruity and sours, some Hells lager, and coffee stout in the mix.

Half pints the game for mix and matchability, we rapidly descend into ribaldry and banter, and positively drop further with Duncky and Nick.

Score 7 of 10 samples by closing time, with only one that was a “brave choice”.

Axis of evil head to Puds for a whisky fuelled end to the evening, whilst the tythy boys beat a hasty retreat.

Good venue! Ace night 🙂

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete, Butty & TJ

Crew: Slim, El Pres, Butty, TJ, Mr Inc, PTD, Stunt

Pub: Adrian & Dunc

Route: BL, Zig, Walker Barn, Charity, Snicket to Narnia, Extension, Standing Stone, Shutlingsloe steps & slabs, Trig point, slabs & steps, singletrack to kirsten munt descent, ressies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Mild, dry, breezy high up, soft trails.

Stats: Chain faff (Slim). lighting faff (PTD)

Notes:

Decent turnout for promised birthday treats mid ride.

El Pres proposes top of Shutlingsloe as the venue, and a great shout it was too!

Warm climbing uphill in the last of the light, distractions in the form of bright aircraft lights coming over at regular intervals on the final slog up charity. (A380 spotted :-))

Lovely late evening light, but lights on going into the trees for the snicket.

…and its a wee bit slippy slidey (in just about a good way), so probably a last ride of the year here unless there is another long dry spell.

Extension is also a bit “rad” in it’s looseness (or were we just going a bit fast??)

either way a lot of smiles at the bottom.

Bad chain jam for the birthday boy on the shutlingsloe steps, meaning the advance party could wait at the stile with lights off (confusing TJ) and enjoy the views.

IMG_1791

Too breezy to stand around at the trig point, so we hunker down amongst the rocks, and are treated to fine slices of pork pie with mustard all washed down with rusty nail on the rocks with lemon (it worked!!).

IMG_1786

IMG_1788

Presentation of an “unt” mug was very well received 🙂

IMG_1790

Suspensions tested on the way down, with rapid pedalling to the pub to keep up with El Pres 🙂

Syd occupying our table, so we are in the back room for a change. Thirst quencher fab, food not bad either, and conversation enhanced with Adrian and Dunc.

IMG_1796

Butty in Stoptober sobriety shock move (no effect on either ribaldry or digestion!!)

IMG_1802

Dunc wondering if his Runtober has been a wise move.

The rest of us are on BAUtober and are entirely unaffected 🙂

Highland park, amusing vouchers that have survived the washing machine are happily accepted, and was there some brandy too??

Not cold on the ride home 🙂

“Can you make up a story with these key points… Perfect timing for RV using live location, Huge intimidating Stag in Lyme Park, presidential puncture at Mellor golf club, shonky weather station at Mellor cross, face plant warning for cheeky descent, careful with pressures the (descent to the) fox is a bike breaker, Butty breaks a spoke, hunger is growing, surprise jumps, (Stawberry) piggy chips, firkin nice bar staff, TJ’s late AoE.

TNR 20-9-2018 Bronagh Boys

Crew: El Pres, Stunt, Troll

Route: BL, zig zags, saddlers way, langley resssies, smithy, witches cottages, charity, extension, standing stone, nessit, trail monkeys LHS, smithy.

Conditions: Breezy & mild with biblical rain later

Notes:

Torrential rain during the day, and a radar picture showing little let up puts off all but the bravest this week.

However arriving at BL the rain had stopped, and after a quick comms to get a late running troll to go direct to the smithy, the climb in wet weather gear got hot quite quickly!

Mud and huge puddles have returned, but we don’t complain as the lack of precipitation is a win (as long as it lasts).

Plan A (which was to go straight up to charity then down narnia and hardingland to the smithy) is modified get there sooner to meet up with Phil, so we head to saddlers way. Car park is empty apart from 3 police cars..with some very friendly officers “who you haven’t seen right!” there are on an operation to stamp down on rural crime.

Rapid(ish) decent along the lower teggs track and up to the smithy to order food…a troll mobile, but no troll. He’s been too quick for us and has got to witches cottage already..he comes back down by an different route to that which we expected, by which time we’ve headed up to look for him..gratuitous wasted uphill for all!!

Finally quorate we head back up into the darkness and the first spots of rain. Amphibian avoidance needed as it’s obviously good weather for frogs!

We are rewarded for our determination to ride by a helping hand of a tailwind all the way up to the start of charity. Weirdly this years weather has resulted in a generous tinge of green grass on much of the upper downhill, so as well as the water running down – the dry bits are also a bit slippy!

Extension is grass free, but the earlier rain has randomly placed “baby’s head” rocks all over the place..tricky!

More frog dodging on the climb out, a possible deer sighting on the road (but it might have been shadows).

From standing stone we debate route, as we have turned into wind (and rain). We opt for trail monkeys over ferriser. After following a very big rabbit (or maybe a small hare?)  we stop in the lee of the trees just before the top of Nessit for a quick snifter of winters gold, pat Dan’s bench on the way past and hit the trail!

Phil immediately almost loses it at the start…and its a very different ride from the dusty dry summer conditions!! Slidey mud and slippy roots are back!! some sections are walked, lower down past the cleared trees we almost get lost as new trails head right but then suddenly end!

We find our way out, but now have to arrive pronto for the pre arranged food.

Not surprisingly we are the only clientele..but our fancy food (charcoal infused burger bun anyone) and selection of marvellous ales dizzy blonde, duchars and two bays made choosing difficult..some went for all of them 😉

Conversation stayed out of the ribaldry zone due to a lack of Dunc (too wet to walk to the car!!)

We smugly chided our mates until we opened the door to face the inside of a washing machine, and have a log flume experience on the way down…foot high gushers coming out of the manhole covers by the kings head! Bollin a grey seething mass with ammoniacal aromas! Clean bike and very wet kit on arrival home.

it’s autumn!

TNR 13-9-2018 : Curse of the Edge ?

IMG_1760

Words & Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, TJ , Pete

Pub: PTD & Dunc

Route : Riverside Park – Bollin Valley – Prezzas – Chelford Rd – Findlow Hill – Bradford Lane – Hocker lane – Slade lane – Windmill Wood – Artists Lane OR ascent , northern side (route to remain undeclared ) , Chelford Rd return to Prezzas & the Legh Arms

Conditions : Cloudy , dry and cooling down

Notes :

I do not consider myself superstitious, but by the end of the evening the tally of things that had “gone awry” was quite a list.

I have begun to think …
Is this ride route cursed ?

IMG_0291

Library Photo

Time to consider the case for the prosecution :
Exhibit A : The mud head Troll declares his refusal to participate in the ride due to a lack of gnarliness
Exhibit B : Alex injures himself during pre-ride preparations and drops out
Exhibit C : EL Pres arrives somewhat flustered at having apparently been given a parking ticket outside his own gaff.
Exhibit D: Part way up Chelford Rd Chris discovers he has forgotten his front light….and the night is falling
Exhibit E: My expensive Thomson Elite dropper post snaps off as we take the fast route back to Tythy from the pub. It’s just outside the two year guarantee period.

But time to think more positively ..

We started off down the Bollin Valley, Dry and picturesque. Starteling a heron, and navigating the long horned cattle. A short but reliable part of the route.

IMHO a ride centred around Alderley Edge is always a bit special . When the nights have drawn in you can make the most of these natural woods. You hardly see a soul, especially if you stay on the southern side of the Prestbury – Alderley road.

I lent my helmet light to Chris, and the battery lasted the whole evening.

IMG_1752

We had an interesting encounter with a particularly vocal Owl near the end of Slade Lane . It was particularly noisy, in fact decidedly p1ssed off at having 3 sets off Chinese lights focussed on it.

I managed to navigate most of Windmill Wood in the dark, only getting us a little bit lost for a few minutes. The climb back up Artists, Off road on the right, is another little gem.

By now its almost 8:30 and we have yet to venture North of the main road.

We soon arrive at a location known as Stormy Point and dismount to chill and sample some fine whisky . TJ has a birthday to celebrate.
With lights off, we realise it is not totally dark and enjoy a couple of wee drams .
Realising it is now 8.55 and remembering my promise to the Legh Arms staff of a 9pm-Ish arrival…its time to go.

IMG_1755

Beer-legs Palmer disappears into the distance . We arrive at the Blik Boy (Capetown spelling) to a warm welcome from Scott and the young lady staff.

It has been another case of Austin Dining Logistics. PTD awaits us, and the “Cumbria Way” and Dizzy Blondes flow freely.

Dunc arrives and brings the reliable ribaldry zone. Something that could be patented? Soon it is chucking out time .TJ have disappears northward , and El Pres and the dynamic Tythy Duo head up the Bollin Valley.

You already know what happens next….

But it has been a good night, despite the hex upon us.
