TNR 23-01-2014 Properly Wintery

From TNR 23-01-2014 Three Hills and LS-PL

Crew: PTD, El Pres, Slim, Butty, Stunt, Mr I

B Ride: Dunc

Route: BL, Teggs nose car park, Saddlers way, Crooked Yard Lane, walker Barn, Chazza, Narnia, Wet snicket, Smithy, Rezzies, white rabbit climb, Nessit, s bends, Munt descent, singletrack, rezzies, Smithy

Conditions: Hail and Snow at first, then clearing, cold with very wet trails.

Notes:

Unexpected white stuff from the skies from 6pm scuppers the big plan (second week running). With Butty moaning about cold feet due to wet shoes having not dried since sunday, the routenfurher decides to keep us warm by doing three big hills, whilst staying on weather friendly territory.

So a wet saddlers way with a smidge of snow on top is being sensible!? ho hum what is the worst that could happen? a bit of walking here and there it seems 🙂

El Pres derides the road ascent as not hard enough – but its certainly steep enough, and has some amusingly abusive graffitti in the snow from the leader of the pack 😉

White road all the way up to chazza, no ice, but plenty of water  and mud on the way down. By now the wet snow is compacting underfoot and then falling off leaving “negative” imprints of the soles of our boots, or if unlucky just clogging cleats!

The wet snicket is not as wet as feared and suprisingly has a hint of grip 🙂

Just time for another warming climb to nessit (sadly no whisky on board this week) and a rapid descent to the smithy.

Its Whisky and Haggis chicken all round (a mini burns night) and a warming fire to dry wet kit. Old Man on draught (do we need to have words!!) plenty of ski talk and ride journal news – but the Big news of the night from Dunc – electric shoe driers for your garage (think hair dryer with four nozzles) from Claus Ohlson…If only Butty had know about this last week!!!!

Happily the fire had dried his socks and shoes (even better without detectable odour) , donning all availale clothing we head outside to find frosted bikes! A very careful descent into Langley prewarned by Dunc of flooded road on the bend.

Proper winter riding!
