TNR 30-01-2020 Dentists Lung Therapy

Crew: EL Pres, PTD, Butty, Troll, Lee, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Saddlers way, Crooked Yard Road, Charity Lane & Extension, Standing Stone, Nessit Hill, Ressies, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Mild but windy!

Notes:

Half our numbers were in the throes of lurgy recovery, and Troll and Butty with impressive chesty coughs..so PTD suggests riding hard to give them a good clearout!

With the wind rapidly strengthening, a reverse last week ish route is taken, and once Lee found his wallet we are quorate.

Early pace is a mark of things to come, no slacking on this ride! But not so severe that we can’t chat along the way.

Trails are reasonably dry, but still plenty of mud and puddles in the usual places. Saddlers way not greasy (always good!).

At the bottom democracy rules (mutiny?) and the route is diverted away from a Hardinland ascent, to “climb on tarmac” up Crooked Yard Road. Lungs are now producing plentiful quantities of residual slime, and there is definitely advantage in riding in front of the “expectorant brothers” šŸ˜‰

They are doing well though, and the mini peleton is not strung out that much by the start of chazza. Where the wind is howling against the waving trees. No point in lingering long in this wind chill, and soon the high walls of the lane are protecting us from the worst.

Mid & lower chazza still running pretty wet, so wet bum time, and a wait for the Troll at the bottom has us wondering if he’s had a pinch flat or lighting faff? but he appears just as El Pres and Lee take pity and start to head back up…he’d only stopped to put his coat on!

Extension nice and chunky, time check gives us plenty of time to head to Nessit, but the pace has finally told, and our spluttering duo fork off down the KM descent direct to pub.

The rest of us take route 1 down between the DH course, then thrash the ressies. Plenty of smiles at the leathers, then a suprisingly hard into wind ride to the pub.

Chapel bar is the new normal, a little Iccle is taken to finish the barrel, with Weetwood a fine alternative. Calamari a first? Ribaldry already underway before Dunky appears, then in a weird reverse to normal we end up on online collaboration tools and how best to dress to impress at work!!

Luckily Butty takes us back down again, with hilarious spoof instagrammers. Somehow Troll is allowed to order the whisky, but manages to stay in budget..phew. 25% on the voucher bingo.

We await feedback on the effectiveness of the lung cleansing!

TNR 23-01-2020 The Murk of Macc Forest

Crew : PTD, El Pres, Butty, Bernard, Lee & Pete

Pub: DuncĀ

Route : BL – Zig Zags – Teggs Nose (top entry) – Leathers – Charity – Narnia – Hardingland – Teggs Nose Rezzie – Sutton HallĀ

Weather : Dry , Foggy and about 6cĀ

Notes :Ā

I managed to get myself to BL from the splendour of Upper Bollingtonia in about 25 mins . The canal was not too much of a mud bath , the fog was already creating a spooky mood and the owls were hooting early

The excuses list was moderately amusing this week : Troll has a chess game with a certain Comrade Chestikof , Stunt has a family , TJ has an Alpine abode …

Thank goodness we have a few of the crew we can rely on ..and the good company of Lee this week

There was a short debate about whether we should go high to the Cat and Fiddle , and mutterings about the Goyt and Stakeside …but this soon dissolved into ā€œlets do the forestā€Ā

IMG_7849

Teggs was fun, despite PTD’s warnings of deathly slipperiness it was quite tractable. Paul provided an ā€œexperiencedā€ line to follow on the lower section. This seemed to provide more chance of staying upright on the greasy grass

Once again 3sheds rode the concrete steps to the Bottom’s (Fnarr Fnarr) Reservoir . The mojo is definitely back.Ā

The long winch up past The Leathers to the forest begins . On the fire road up to Witches Cottage I am overtaken by the first of about 5 or 6 twenty-something lads . Its good to see the forest being enjoyed by Yoof ..but I can’t help but notice – no ā€œback packā€ of any form .

Paul and Bern are treated to a close flypast of an owl !Ā

As I reach the tarmac climb up to charity , the murk is fairly dense . At the start of Charity the rest of the crew await myself and Butty. I followĀ  Lee and Bernard along Charity , and just after the apex they hop up onto the grassy section to the right . I follow their lead , and about a minute later I am really glad that I did. A roaring of a 200TDI engine and a blaze of headlights announce the arrival of a modded Discovery which is hell bent on re-modelling the shape of our beloved Charity Lane. Bar-Stewards.Ā

IMG_4759

The murk is really thick as we start the traverse of Narnia , and I am grateful to Bern for waiting for me and letting me follow his back light down the steps which form the best bit of the Narnia descent

I thought we might hang a left at the end of Narnia , and take the easy option of fire road and tarmac to the pub. Thankfully the crew momentum took us straight on , down the gnarliness of Hardingland and the along track that skirts Teggs Nose reservoir to where Holehouse Lane pops us out into Langley. This is a ā€œproperā€ MTB route towards SH, in my humble opinion.

Sutton Hall is almost empty – in contrast to our last visit a fortnight ago . Our food arrives fast as El Pres had phoned our order in a the start of charity. Hoegaarden is the best medicine.Ā

IMG_3847

Dunc eventually turns up without bike attire – he is suffering from an out break of too much work. Ribaldry had already broken out with a weird discussion involving canine voyeurism Ā

A greedy foursome (names omitted here) order pudding , but there is some sort of hitch which leads to a delay in delivery ….apologies are forthcoming and the cost is not added to the bill !Ā

907ec4d9-5cb1-4dfe-9aa6-cec347a91304

As our Xmas voucher gave us 50% off the food bill anyway this gave us a relatively cheap Thursday bill šŸ™‚Ā

There was no AOE ! Ā

Crew :

3sheds – Troll- Butty – Chris – PTD – Coley – Pete

Pub:  – Adrian, Dunc is a no show

Weather: about 4c all evening, thankfully fairly dry with little wind.

Notes :

What a cracking ride and gathering for the first ride of the year for me. I know there was a ride on the 2nd January but I could not make it.

With Coley and 3sheds riding, together with PTD, El Presidente , Butty , Troll and yours truly there was a definite feeling of ā€œgetting the band back togetherā€ .

Paul takes control of route choice.  Silently, with his assured style. No debate, we just follow his lead. We are blessed.

IMG_4291

A Teggs rear entry , and then at the top the crew splits into two briefly and we lose 3sheds . Thankfully he reappeared quickly , and then he does the full , dentist approved left hand off piste descent …and tops it with the concrete steps to the reservoir dam. His Mojo has returned.

IMG_4297

Right at the Leathers and we climb to Nessit . Then the (lower half of ) downhill course , then a new short, sweet and loamy piece of single track . I love the way that even after almost 20 years of riding this forest PTD can show us new bits of track.

IMG_4293

Then the footpath to the right for a while. Then some tarmac,Ā  the rezziesĀ  and onto the pub .Ā

Paul is once again quietly in charge …ensuring all beer orders are getting sorted out šŸ™‚ .

The certainty of Hoegaarden

Here the beer choices gets a little weird and a tad ribald – Ginger Tinge and Chocolate Porter ! Much giggling. Thank goodness for the certainty for the Hoegaarden.Ā

And El Presidente was also back to his normal cheeky self …finishing his pint before me and cajoling me to “Get The Beers In” …

IMG_8439

To top it all we had a Sutton Hall surprise voucher from Xmas ….it turnabout to be a 50% one !!.

IMG_9843

Which spawned a small but beautifully formed AOE . The Inner Sanctum.

Words by PTD , editing by Pete, Photos by Dunc

Crew : El Pres,Ā  Mr I (aka Troll) , TJ, Coley, Dunc & PTD.

Notes :Ā

Slightly tardy start from BL, weather started with good downpour but dried as evening went on.

WhatsApp Image 2020-01-02 at 23.48.31

Route :  The Zig, Broadcarr/Coalpit Lane descent, Smithy, Round the Rezzies, Up to the bottom of down hill course, New single track,

footpath and tarmac descent to Sutton hall for 8.45pm.

Largest ever TNR tyre puncture for Mr I as a fence staple trashed his rear tyre.

Good food and beer at Sutton Hall supported by the Duncan ribaldry zone.

TNR 19-12-2019 Cocktails for Christmas

Riders: El Pres, PTD, Adrian, Bern, Butty, Coley, Croxy, Doog, 3 Sheds, Troll, Lee, Shaun, Slim, TJ, Rick J, Stunt, G, Mark McD

Pub: Dunc, Nick, Mawds, Simon, El Pud, Dr S

Route: Bl, Zig Zags, Saddlers Way, Lower Teggs, Smithy, reverse ressie to Bob’s Bench, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Mild but very windy

Notes:

A top turnout for this years cocktail caper, although the lack of Christmassy weather may have accounted for the lack of decorated bikes and riders. A lone Father Christmas on El Pres’s backpack was the sum total of our efforts!

Good to see some next generation too, with guest appearance from Shaun, and a first ride for Rick Jackson.

Weather yet again playing a strong part in route choice, with the Teggs top and Teggs cocktail bar both being exposed to the full force of the SE wind.

So the shelter of Bob’s bench was the target, and a bit of up hill and down dale to get there…with a procession of lights somewhat strung out by the time the spearhead arrived.

Menu:

Champagne on arrival (G)

Taster of 18 month old grain spirit (Shaun) …its getting better and better!!

Roasted Chestnuts (heated back to warmth with a blowtorch!), Pigs in blankets with Salted caramel & Soy, or Dark and tangy dipping sauces. Troll

Spanish pigs in blankets Doog

East Side Gin Cocktail, Gin, sugar syrup, lime, cucumber Rick Jackson

“Red one” Bourbon, Chambeaurd, cranberry juice, bitters Troll

Scapegrace New Zealand craft gin & tonic Lee

Green Goblin: Vodka, rum, blue curaco, cointreau, pineapple juice PTD

(not needed in the end, spare cake from saturday night!) Bern

A top selection of sips and snacks, PTD needing to repair a pedal, and many a toast!

Just time to recover glasses and head downhill to meet the non riding fraternity in the chapel bar at Sutton Hall.

Three tables, crackers, table service for drinks, much merriment and chat!

Probably the largest bill in TNR history (first use of a £50 note??) but a smooth settling in the end.

TNR 12-12-2019 Forest start, Fudge finish!

TNR12-12-2019

Words by Alex, Photos by Pete

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, TJ, Dunc, Stunt

Route: BL, Zig, Charity, Extension, Forest Chapel, Gravel Descent, R&L side trails, Bobs Bench, 5 Clouds.

Conditions: Some drizzle higher up, very wet trails, cold later

Notes:

The weather seems to be stuck in a cycle of “rinse & repeat” with heavy rain much of the day clearing just in time for the TNR…but not in time for some excuses for no shows!!

The hardy core of the TNR massive duly assembled, and almost get caught up in the Puss Bank disco finish due to “where will we finish?” talk.

Its peak xmas do season, and both the Smithy and the Dunny are full. We head uphill to continue the conversation. Mega puddles on the Zig, a hint of delayering needed, a touch of cloud at Windyways, and more on charity tarmac..with a cold wind higher up.

Poor vis on the charity descent = slower speeds, plus big rocks in strange places from all the water (and 4×4’s).

The extension is clearly seen..which is just as well as there is no clear line through the debris field

TNR12-12-2019

PTD needs some air in his rear tyre having burped it hitting something big, but needs a CO2 boost from Dunc by the time we’ve climbed back to forest chapel on the road.

Finish plan has now evolved to 5 clouds & takeout in a bid to avoid the popular pubs, and the likely popular Picturedrome (yet to be TNR’d)

Hurtling down the gravelly decents, then either side of the road, may not be the most techie of routes, but is still fun!

The curse of the bumped rim not resealing causes at bike swapping pit stop from PTD, and some TNR inspection of works at the Shrubberies.

TNR12-12-2019

Plan comes good as 5 clouds is quiet, and we can stack the bikes inside. Pizza’s are procured (and delivered to our table), and the No1 pale ale at only 3% is a tasty and healthy option! The belgian sour beer was in a minority of 1.

TNR12-12-2019

Election exit poll news drove us to harder stuff, and the 10% Fudge stout was crying out to be tried (in respectable 1/3pint portions). Rather fantastic it was too…so that would be 2/3 then šŸ˜‰

The sensible leavers left a developing AoE contemplating a third 3rd..or did they discover something stronger on the top shelf???

Crew: El Pres, PTD, 3 Sheds, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Dunc, Adrian

Route: BL, Cat, Danebower Hollow, Cumberland Clough, Standing Stone, Bobs Bench, St Dunstans.

Conditions: Not Raining, Not windy, sub 5.

Notes:

The skies have cleared after the days ration of rain (November now officially the wettest and dullest month of 2019 according to Buxton weather)

It may be cold but it’s not raining, it’s not windy, and we can finally head further than the confines of the forest!

Before we do, plenty of faffage, as PTD astride shiny new Norco 29er full suss running 2.6″ of rubber has to fettle seat position, and rear shock (which is playing up..or more accurately not providing enough play!)

The Troll realises his handlebar mount is on the other bike (and borrows a light from Chris), and we welcome back Mr Ball!

Our legs (and ar*es!) seem to have forgotten how to do the long climb to the cat, which is harder than we recall!! Light traffic, and stunning winter views of the plains and the skies are well worth it.

A bit of skip inspection at the top, definitely some work going on…

Too chilly to linger, and across Danebower..serious amounts of surface water, and warnings from 3 sheds about ruts..

A quick dash on the road and onto Chumby, with more caution about eroded sections from Mr B (secret training rides?? would account for his impressive speed to the cat!)

The normally safe lines on the edges are super slippy, and the mini ravines are chunky!, bedrock corner was a welcome relief..before ensuring enough momentum to cross the double stream! (not seen that much water heading to the waterfall in a long long time)

Cumberland brook also semi aquatic with big boulders! PTD has excitement due to lack of rear suspension, Stunt must have put too much air into his newly serviced from forks..he had some unwanted bounce !

It’s all good and a great change from the last few weeks, which pub discussion on the road to standing stone, and EL Pres with a little help from google gets us food ordered at the Dunny.

WhatsApp Image 2019-11-29 at 00.11.17

Just time for the top LHS (steps have gone!) and a blast round bobs bench.

Excellent Wreckless evapourates very fast, food is fab, and some bizarre 9 ball USA vs Europe pool match on the tellybox is a bit distracting.

Adrian and Dunc join us, we are light on Ribaldry…and the lack of an Austin is cited a possible cause (although we are also missing Butty!)

Mr Ball berates us for having got old and slow when we mention he may have been secretly training in preparation for his return šŸ˜‰

a mini AoE are still finishing off the spare pies left over from the local pool league match well past the witching hour.

Frost on the cars by the time we got home.

Crew: El Pres, PTD, TJ, Butty, Troll, Bern, Croxy, Dr S, Stunt

Pub: Nic & Dunc

Route: BL, Zig, Teggs, Smithy, Road to almost Forest Chapel, Tracks RHS & LHS of middle road to Rangers Station, Bob’s bench, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Sub 5, windy, dry

Notes:

A third sub five November TNR…but this week no rain…although a stiff SE wind = sub zero in the wind chill!!

Despite the chilliness, a decent turnout, with the lack of precipitation tempting “fair weather” Croxy ;-), and a welcome appearance by Dr S.

This weeks delay to the start down to trouble on the Macc – Leek road, giving us a late Troll at BL, and an even later Dr S only at Sutton Hall.

It says something when the fastest route to rendevous with the posse is to be directed up coalpit lane!!

The Zig has definitely dried out a lot in a week, and the wind is making anyone thinking they had overdressed smug in the knowledge that no one is going to shed a layer on the ascents!

We pause at the Teggs gate for Dr S to catch up (he’s done well!)

Good conditions on the descent…but a lengthy wait at the bottom turns out to be a mega tubeless burp for Dr S needing a tube to be put in, and a trip to specsavers in the morning to unbend his glasses from the subsequent over the handlebars off! …The fearless trip of PTD, Dr S and the Troll had decided to do the LHS descent!!

We’ve lost quite a bit of time, so the original plan of Witches cottage then Charity and down, is shortened to road to the Track just along from Dentists Descent.

WhatsApp Image 2019-11-21 at 23.12.52

It’s been a long time since I’ve done that road climb (and maybe there is good reason!!) tis long and extremely steep!! There may have been disquiet in the ranks if we had fresher memories! Good training for the fittest, smugness for anyone still with a triple chainset, and some pushing here and there..

PTD has promised seasonal treats, which after a fast and fun descent to the pool, we have lower down out of the wind. Whisky Mac, and homemade mincepies from the surgery nurses (top notch!).

El Pres does comms with Sutton Hall for food, and its more fast gravelly fun down and round the ressie.

WhatsApp Image 2019-11-21 at 23.12.52

In the back room again at Sutton Hall (the Chapel bar apparently), fish pie crisis resolved by Tandoori Halloumi, near disaster as the favoured blonde ale goes off after just 2 pints are pulled, but recovery via Lord Lucan and table service šŸ˜‰

Butty has the ribaldry going very early (he must have missed us!) so it’s in full swing by the time Nic and Dunc arrive.Croxy tells them that the route was “all uphill” from which we can summise that golf and tennis are not great substitutes for riding (but the boy did well).

No prisoners taken on the ride home (definitely in the teeth chattering zone).

TNR 14-11-2019 Full Wets!

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Bern, TJ, Troll, Slim, Stunt

Pub: Dunc

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Saddlers Way, Lower Teggs, Smithy, Reverse Ressie, White Rabbit Ascent, Between the downhill, Bobs Bench, Smithy.

Conditions: Sub 5, Rain (snow higher up), Wind (easing), very wet trails.

Notes:

November’s Nasty weather continues! another TNR in full wets and many layers…since last week new waterproof trousers and many a pair of new “waterproof” gloves have been purchased!

Bern still winning the best choice of footwear in his Wellies šŸ™‚

Almost half the riders due at BL are running late, so the prompt ones are brought inside by El Pres and given a nice cup of tea šŸ™‚

6:45 and we ride, the “correct” way out of BL, to pick up straggler Pete.

PTD suggests a variation to ensure we don’t just repeat last weeks ride, so Saddlers way it is! By the time we are at Windyways the rain is now full wet snowflakes, doing their best to stick on the wet ground.

We get whooping encouragement from some lads in a white car on the car park as we head down the bridleway…its slippy! Bern nearly comes a cropper when he stops, as wellies on wet rock don’t have the best grip (nor do many winter boots!).

Huge puddles on lower teggs, and a lot of water running at the ford at the bottom of the steps, by now the rain is easing, but the water off the trail is impressive!

More care needed on the bridge over the Langley reservoir spillway, lethal wet timber!

We check in at the Smithy and get the go ahead to order at 8:30 (when we plan to be back), a warming climb to where the white rabbit path meets the mountain bike trail, where TJ provides cooking whisky to warm us from the inside. Slightly comedy moments ensue as we attempt to manipulate tiny plastic glasses without removing gloves! Huge drips from the trees add a little water to the odd one too!

Final downhills and through the “lake of doom” on the corner of the ressie dam wall track, and we are in the land of the fairy houses to park up the bikes.

Wet kit is draped on radiators and in front of the fire, Hobgoblin or Cumberland ale meet the dark or light preferences, and pretentious crisps (Atlas mountains Rosemary and Thyme) turn out to be rather fantastic!

Izzy serves us our food extremely professionally, and the new gear debrief begins!

Berghaus trousers get the thumbs up, the Dhb gloves seem to have performed variably, @PeteTourettes had some comments!!

An eclectic mix of humour, history, politics and trivia as usual, even before the arrival of Dunc.

No prisoners taken on the ride home, every man for himself against the cold!

TNR 7-11-2019 Charity Lane in Epic Rain

Words by Alex, Pics by Pete & Alex

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, Bern, TJ, Troll, Stunt

Pub: Dunc, Adrian

Route: BL, Zig Zags, Charity Lane, Narnia, Witches Cottage, Fireroad to Smithy, Sutton Hall.

Conditions: Submerged trails, rain, windy higher up, cold.

Notes:

We all knew it was going to be nasty, 5 degrees, still raining after 8 plus hours as a weather system sat atop the pennines and span slowly.

Despite this, seven brave riders turned up for the ride in full wets.

A simple route of up to chazza, then narnia, hardingland, and then pub feels right.

At BL, the rain is not too bad, but the surface water has built up a lot.

Up Buxton road, and the road is running 2 inches deep for the first couple of feet from the kerb! Puddle city on the Zig, just wet and slippy on the Zag.

Going over the top at Windyways (clue in the name) we hit wind and heavier rain. Turning onto Tarmac Charity you can actually hear the water burbling like a real stream. It soon becomes every man for themselves to get to the Narnia gate and under the trees for some respite. Its very unpleasant!

IMG_7022 (1)

At Narnia bench, stunt provides some hot sweet black coffee laced with Tia Maria, it goes down quickly, but can’t stave off the effects of waterlogged gloves, heavily soaked waterproof trousers, and seepage…

At Witches cottage we abandon the Hardingland option, award full “man points” for being out, and head downhill by the fastest route to find a pub with a fire!

Church House…no, Kings Head..Yes! El Pres even gets some folk to move to make room for us…but then we are scuppered by a jobsworth landlady who won’t let us have food by the fire! Sutton Hall it is, and although its very busy we are found a table by a roaring radiator in the back šŸ™‚

IMG_7535 (1)

A nice stockport ale is rather good, we need 3 portions of table chips to supplement the mains, and do our best to dry wet gear.

Dunc joins in flowery shirt later on, as does Adrian (minus Spaniel).

IMG_4880 (1)

By home time, wet gloves are now “warm and wet”, it’s still raining, and its cold…was I the only one to have a hot drink when I got home??
