Crew : Lee, Butty, Pete , El Pres, Troll , Bern , 3sheds, TJ

Route : Derbyshire Bridge – Buxton Old Coach Rd – Berry Clough – Contour to Grouse Butts – Wild Moor – above Wildmoorstone Brook – Beet Wood descent  – Plex Lodge – Bishops Lane – Burbage – the Buxton Old Rd – DB .

TNR 02-06-2022 Small Buxton Circle

Eventual watering hole : The Wharf .

Conditions : Dry , overcast and quite mild  . It tried to rain mid-ride , but gave up fairly quickly.

Notes :

Butty’s van and car assist  Buxton Circle plan soon morphed into a southern Goyt valley based mini Buxton Circle, which was big on fun and big on descents and climbs.

20220602-20220602_194313SM-G973F

In a matter of hours after picking up his new van it was being used to collect TJ and then me and whisk us to Barracks Lane . Here we sorted out who was ferrying who, and who was taking whose bike.

Apart from Lee & Bern who did a separate rendezvous and ended up late for the meet up at Derbyshire Bridge …as Lee had it in his head we were doing Three Shires instead . Most entertaining  .

Tbh it was a welcome return to the delights of this side the Goyt Valley . The descent into Berry Clough was “spicey”  to use one of Lee’s favourite phrases. 3sheds and Butty were in their element .

20220602-20220602_194336SM-G973F

From the valley bottom the climb was more of a contouring thing but still technical enough to keep you from switching off your brain.

After this section it was very much a “make it up as we go along” with Butty knowing the territory fairly well .

20220603-PHOTO-2022-06-02-22-41-02 2

We make it back to Derbyshire Bridge intact , and a brief picnic ensues before there is an excellent suggestion : to reconvene at The Wharf in Macc .

( Thanks to Butty for bringing a selection of fine snacks. And hats off to The Troll for bringing home cured Salt Beef and Horseradish sauce)

20220602-20220602_202900SM-G973F

Just a brief stay at the Wharf for TJ , me and Butty but enough to graduate from a fruity 4.2% cooking IPA to a dangerous pint of “Disruptor” at 7.4% and only £4.70 …

20220602-20220602_212404SM-G973F

I don’t know how late anyone else stayed ……

Appendix A : Historically accurate route description (Thanks , Butty !) :

Buxton Old Coach Road (reverse of the “Bathchair men” route), track north and west through Berry Clough returning to the Goyt’s Clough eastern track and contouring the Northshore to Grouse Butts.   Tracking back south east following Wildmoorstone Brook up and over the dismantled Cromford & High Peak Railway close to the tunnel a short hike a bike over the top to Beet wood.

Then a steep descent into Bishops Lane .

(George John Trevor Spencer, Bishop of Madras died at Edgemoor in Buxton, on 23 July 1866 and it is this bishop that Bishop’s lane in Burbage may be named after).

From the outskirts of Buxton back west into the Bathchair Mens route again, this end named Macclesfield Old road  for a very rough climb and fast return to the car park near Derbyshire bridge.

Appendix B : Bathchair Men ?  – an explanation (from https://www.wondersofthepeak.org.uk/facts/the-goyt-valley-macclesfield-old-road/) ……

TNR 26-5-2022 The Bridle No-Way!

Crew: El Pres, PTD, Slim, 3 Sheds, Troll, Dunc, Stunt

Pub: Lee, Adrian

Route: RB, War memorial climb, Lidgetts Lane, back of Kerridge, Waulkmill wood, poachers snicket, Pott Shrigley, Bakenstondale road, Gritstone Trail, Sponds, Dale Top, quarries descent, chapel descent, Pott Shrigley, Poachers.

Conditions: Sunny and breezy

Notes:

After a day of grey skies and heavy showers, lo the clouds parted and giveth a fine evening for a ride in the hills!

Meeting at Rainbow Bridge we are even more blessed as many maybe’s turn out to yeah be’s. Troll sends us his location (parked at the Poachers) so we pop on live location for him to meet us somewhere on the back of Kerridge.

If only he had checked his phone then he would not have arrived at RB after we had left, and needed to chase us back to the Poachers!

The recent rain meant that grass was wet, and exposed muddy bits a bit greasy, but the sun was warm on the back, and glinted off the handcuffs above head height in one of the trees overhanging the path in the big field just before the gate and trods down to the Waulkmill entrance!

With it being Chelsea flowershow week, we could take the time to appreciate impressive displays of red and pink Rhodedenrons in gardens and purply/blue Wisteria on cottages.

The troll finally catches us up, and we head off for “climb on road” all the way up past the brickworks and brink farm (sporting a wonderful yellow laburum to cheer up an otherwise tired set of buildings) and onto the gritstone trail in golden evening light.

Breezy though! and past the gambolling lambs and the huge mountain of paperwaste to the Sponds trig point, there was not much hanging around!

Heading to Dale top was into the lowering sun, with deep shadows in places, making for careful line choice to avoid unexpected things!

Good views from the (suprisingly not) singing gate, although hazier than you would have thought given the strength of the wind and earlier rain. “Da holy city” was visible to the right of Fiddlers Ferry.

Scattering the rooks on the way the quarries descent made extra fun as the lower gate was open for the sheep, but danger lurked at the end with a fallen bridleway sign in the wet grass just where PTD was turning at great speed, the front wheel went, handlebars turned and down he went with the bar end wacking into his leg to boot!

Impressive bruising anticipated..

It turns out that PTD had never done the chapel descent, and Butty led the way, 3 Sheds gets bonus points for clearing the stream without epower, and we stopped at the end for PTD to pay his respect to his patron saint!

Time was running out, so route one to the poachers, where we sampled all the ales on offer between us. Cosied into the snug the usual mix of bants and hilarity, with Lee joining us as we arrived, and Adrian later on.

No axis of evil as the calls of building work or airport pickups deterred the ususal suspects!

A fine evening for being out and about.

Route : Chez Ruth & Phil to Bosley Cloud and back via Lanes and great tracks

Conditions : Dry , sunny and quite mild  . Cooler later .

Notes

Let us let the photos do the talking ..well most of the conversation at least ..

20220519-IMG_1255.jpg

Finally another Biddulph Moor BBQ bash comes together .

A great route out to the Cloud from high up on Hot Lane . The planned circuit was cut a wee bit short after our host Mr Troll had a terminal mechanical – a loose cassette.

20220519-IMG_1267.jpg 20220519-20220519_195959.jpg

We split into two groups at this point – a few us heading more or less straight back to the homestead but with a slight detour to see the Bridestones . The bad ass e-boys & Bern did some more rad circuits of the back of the Cloud.

Back at the homestead we enjoyed wacky beer , fine vittels and a classic sunset over Fiddler’s Ferry

Thanks to Ruth and Phil for their hospitality and fine nosh .

TNR 12-05-2022 Lyme Loops Episode 2

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.05.44 PM (1).jpg

Words by Pete. Photos & route by Butty

Crew : Butty, Pete , El Pres, TJ, 3 Sheds, Kersh

Route : Bolly Maze, Middlewood, towpath to Hagg Farm , west gate of LP. Loops within the park , Red Lane , Green Lane, Mudhurst Lane, Bow stones , Dale Top, Bakestonedale Rd, Pott Shrigley, The Poachers.

Conditions : Cool, windy on the tops and dusty dry . About 12c

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.05.21 PM.jpg

Notes :

At 5:30pm I was expecting three (me, Butty & El Pres) ..then it suddenly became six .

The more the merrier .

Lord Lucan, aka Graham Kershaw, was a rare (but welcome) sight.

Likewise, TJ has finally returned to the fold from all those Alps trips – it was good to see him.

And 3 sheds made it back from work on time

It was roughly a repeat of the Butty led ride from the end of March , with a couple of variations.

The first of these was the “Rooty bits” on the left hand side of the middle wood way just after the viaduct.  Excellent fun.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.05.44 PM.jpg

Then the traverse of the field just to the right of Higher Doles Farm to pick up the towpath Northwards.

All the way to Hagg Farm …..which is a novel route to the West Gate of LP , but a local resident did not think so and someone got a “no riding here” comment and some

head shaking from a  local resident

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.05.45 PM.jpg

The loops were a little bit more fun having done them back at the end of March – no offs that I noted.

Small herd of deer by the knott ..young stags and a few hinds – then more deer appeared , Definitely something going on.

It was the standard-ish exit route to the east. The dead Landrover (Green lane) slowly merging into the landscape.

Layers had to be donned at Bowstones , and there was a gigantic pile of newspaper

mulch in the distance .

Trails a bit damper in places but mostly dry

Poachers was busy with Nancys and others . Thai curry half half was the popular choice .

Dortmunder , Brentwood, Leffe ..no whiskey !

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.55 PM.jpg

Words by Alex, Pics by Butty, Logistics by Big Events Bern

Crew: El Presidente, Slim, Butty, 3 Sheds, Dr S, Troll, Bern, Mark, El Pud, Eric, Lee, Doog

Berns: Dunc, Big Nic

Route: MC, Zig Zags, Charity, Cheeky wiggly bits to Narnia, More under the trees to the road, Forest Chapel, Standing Stone, Nessit, Between the DH, Ressies, Kings Head Gurnett, Black Road, Blakelow Road, Berns.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.58 PM.jpg

Conditions: Mild & Sunny, cool later.

A Bern organised special to celebrate 60 years of El Presidente, and a very welcome return of many of the country and social members of the TNR family.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.56 PM (1).jpg

Billed as a pootle round the forest until a drinks stop, Bern went a bit more hardcore with lots of swoopy deep ruts under trees (complete with plenty of puddles!). Staying off piste often the better choice, lots of mud splatter, and an evil roadclimb back up to the top of the forest.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.59 PM (1).jpg

All forgotten at Dan’s bench (well then the next one along as it happened) for a refreshing G&T with ice and lemon whilst enjoying the views.

Doog followed it up with a fine single malt for his turn at birthday drinks, and then Bern suggested we stop off for a swift half before getting to his, so he could prep food.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.57 PM.jpg

What could possibly go wrong with this plan? Thornton in his element calculating the relative merits of Leathers and Coalpit lane, or Kings Head and Blakelow as the least worst route option. Kings Head won (although that might have been for the good feedback about the barstaff). Landlord or Neckoil and its pints all round, followed by a half, and then prised out of comfortable quaffing to face the final climb before food.

We are more than a little behind Bern’s half hour schedule, but he had everything ready with the help of Lee, Dunc and big Nick, so all is good.

Red Willow tinnies are a wildly varied selection with smoked lager, ales of all varieties and porters, some reaching 8.8%!

A fine feast of bruchetta, brioche wrapped burgers (the cheese in the cheese burgers having been devoured whilst the buns toased!!) followed by a set custard pudding.

El Pres is presented with a huge card, and a signed first edition of Heligoland – the story of the birth of modern quantum physics.

20220513-WhatsApp Image 2022-05-12 at 10.03.58 PM (2).jpg

Lots of catching up, sampling of the beers, and a late depart for many. Our ebiker escort to our wobbly bolly bandit managed to lose his charge at the off, but we got a three rings later. Team Tythy had close shaves with geese crossing Hulley road, and Troll headed off to take up residence on El Pud’s floor for the night.

…fantastic night, many may have been a little slow in getting going the following morning!

TNR 28-04-2022 Jumbo Axe Edge Moor

Crew: EL Pres, Butty, Troll, Dunc, Stunt, 3 Sheds

Route: MC, zig zags, charity, extension, tea rooms, cat, axe edge moor, back entry to 2 shires, cut thorne, cumberland clough, cumberland brook, standing stone, LHS, Sutton Hall

Conditions: Cool, cloudy, dry

Notes:

Stunt’s been away for a while but is back with a bang to take ops leadership and get the team to start early and go big to take advantage of the dry trails.

The weather is ideal from the no wind and no precipitation, but is reminding us that it’s still only April by having cloudy skies and single digit temperatures! Dark mutterings from those with big building projects about to kick off that the long dry spell will end and rain and winds will reappear just as the roof work is started…

Rour of six make the 5:30 start with a cheeky ride by from PTD to wish us well, with Dunc playing catch up while we do the zig zags, and 3 Sheds starting an hour later with a view to a classic route that should RV with us on chumby.

Pace is sensible, and Dunc joins us neatly at the end of the Zag, getting extra man points for riding after being up till 5am with a “failed deployment”, and fell running the previous 2 nights!

View from the start of Charity so poor you can’t even see Manchester! cloud plenty high enough, just very murky.

Ideal conditions for the RHS of chazza, Butty heads off the front as chief eC*~@t having joked about doing stakeside as well. Somewhat weird to see our regular rocky trail so dry and very pale, no sign of Butty at Forest Chapel, so we head straight on down the extension – super sketchy! and then the long climb up from Bottom of the Oven.

The Stanley Arms attitude is firmly on display with two large hand written signs saying SORRY NO DOGS, hmmm not sorry at all methinks!

Still no sign of Butty as we pull into the tea rooms for a breather, as we wait for a waft of 4G to decipher his live location from 15 minutes prior, he pops up behind us. He has tales to tell of flying insects getting inside his shirt and onto his back – necessitating a rapid dismount at the side of the trail, removal of backpack and clothing and wild flapping. To add insult to injury once back on the bike he overcooked part of the lower section of Chazza and ended up in a spiky bush!! Which would explain the copius scratches, including a nasty looking one on his throat. As he complete’s his tale he then discovers his water bottle has fallen off to boot!

Extra layers on, and rear blinkies deployed for the road section from the Cat to the Axe Edge turn – Dunc’s telemetry indicating a chilly 4 degrees! Warmed a little by the climb up the minor road to the bridleway we have reached our outward objective.

Internal route map memories are searched for waypoint triggers, and the low walled compound on the top of Cheeks Hill does the job, soon we are on the fast slight downhill to the double track, the wiggly road and the jump next to the stream onto the offroad. WAIT!!! Butty just manages to stop in time as the little jump has become a 3 foot monster since we last came this way, He does however impress with the slightly less severe right hand side of it…and we follow in his dusty wake all the way down to 3 Shires.

Stunt has brought us some authentic cuban Chachanchara to toast his upcoming birthday, the mix of white rum, honey and lime juice is rather fine (albeit deceptively strong!) it’s followed with some cuban peanut brittle (about the only sugary snack you can buy there!)

No time to hang about though, and Cutthorne ascent proved quite sapping with the extra dry sand and loose rocks (and nothing at all to do with having already done lots of riding and had rum!)

We are pleased to see the Tarmac at the top, have a slightly bizarre encounter with an american tying to shoo lambs back into a field by reversing his old audi extremely slowly back uphill away from them whilst asking us to wait. We then advance as instructed and the little blighters go in the opposite field under the wire!

Soon Chumby hoves into view and as we turn into the gate, perfectly on schedule is 3 Sheds! spooky.

More loose and gritty descending all the way to the bottom, Chumby Brook a mere damp patch!

Tired legs on the climb to standing stone (I seem to write this very regularly)

A fracturing of the team at the top – Butty heads back to lower Chazza to retrieve his bottle, Dunc and Stunt freewheel down to the pub, and the rest do the RHS tracks.

Sutton hall rather quiet, serious debate about which was the best pint – the Siren looked very dodgy but got a lot of votes, Millenium looked dark and smooth, and of course Lucan was light and lovely as ever. El Pres causes controversy with a request to swap the Mash with his sausage for chips, BUT KEEPING THE GRAVY, and then asking for VINEGAR TOO!!! well each to their own.

A large group of other MTB’ers arrive a bit later on, and it’s clear that we need to up our banter level tonight as we have serious competition. With most of them being eC’s they have more left in the tank than we do.

Butty’s “throatcut” scratch is treated to an antiseptic wipe, which shows up how infrequently we use our first aid kits (a good thing) he politely declines the disney princess bandage from Dunc 😉

Ride stats suggest it’s a munro night from Poynton, but not quite from Tythy with 914m being the magic number, and 850ish not quite enough. Still it’s been good to get further afield, and the ops plan for a 9pm table worked out well, and no lights needed pre pub (a couple were put on for traffic visibility at standing stone)

Serious restraint is shown as no puddings are taken, three do do a Whisky before a chilly ride home.

The season of long light rides is properly underway!

TNR 21-04-22 Dusty Bliss

Forest Bliss

Words by Pete, Pics by Pete & Butty

Crew :  Butty, 3Sheds, El Pres , Pete , Troll, Dunc

In da pub: Croxy

Conditions : Dry, about 14c to start , sunny and a stiff easterly. Dusty trails

Route : MC – Teggs Rear entry – Classic descent – Bottoms Res – Leathers (Food Order) – Left Hand side ascent to Chazza – Fence Hop to cheeky trails – Narnia – Finish Chazza – Extension – Stranding Stone – Nessit – Off Piste Stream path (to left of the downhill ) – Leathers

Notes

Another evening of excellent weather and great trails – twas just a wee bit cold in the easterly.

I wore my sunglasses ? for most of the ride

20220421-IMG_0436.jpg

Teggs Nose was awash with Orienteers . A momentary outbreak of indecision amongst the crew , then the planned 3sheds technical route off the top was deferred. Taking the classic route down to Holehouse lane was a great choice , grippy not slippery and hardly any citizens to dodge on the descent.

A quick pub stop to order nosh. John (the Barman) was in fnarr fnarr mode after multiple orders for Pulled Pork .

A slow winch up the left hand side towards Chazza . Butty disappeared off in E-bike mode and did not reappear for a while .

As we climbed and the sun dropped more that stiff Easterly breeze made its presence known.

It has been a while since we did the “fence hop” to the cheeky trails to Narnia .  They were a bit muddy still at the start but great fun . Marvellous strong low sunlight as the temperature drops.

Extra layers donned , we rejoined charity.  There was a weird, ethereal light on shining Tor and the cat and fiddle.

Very loose on the end of Chazza and the extension (think I had to dab, but no full-on gravel dance)

20220421-IMG_0444.jpg

After Nessit some one ahead chose an orthodox route down – “left of the down hill course via the stream” is my best description of it. I had my doubts to begin with …but it got better and better . The rooty bits were fun and very rideable. And the light from the setting sun through the forest canopy was the icing on the cake .

20220421-IMG_0442.jpg

We eventually emerged at the  foot of Nessit ascent , and 5 mins later we are the prodigal sons returned to The Leathers. We were treated by John , our figurative father, as long lost sons . The “fatted calf” (this week at least) was pulled pork in a bun with chips

Croxy arrives and waxes lyrical about grandfather-dom and tales from a wedding in Ireland.

Neck oil , Landlord, Cooking lager, and ….Guinness, coke and water …for those about to donate blood tomorrow.

Whisky was taken to fortify ourselves for the chilly descent home .

TNR 14-04-22 Roaming The Ridge

20220414-IMG_0238.jpg

Words and pics by Pete

Crew : PTD, Sean, Butty, 3Sheds, El Pres , Pete

Route : Maze , Towpath, Beehive Bridge , War Memorial , Higher Lane, The Quarry Path (to the ridge) , Trig Point, Descent to Kerridge bridleway  – Waulkmill Wood – Poachers Snicket , Blaze Hill Tarmac , Jumper Lane, Oakenbank , The Poachers

Conditions : Dry, about 14c , a bit cloudy but very mild and Spring like

20220414-IMG_0231.jpg

Notes

Sean brought his “Bird” , new, British and acoustic

Butty was also acoustic on his old, but trusty, Liteville ..as he had forgotten to charge his E-steed (tee hee we all sniggered)

3sheds is still sporting his heritage Spesh (as the new one is awaiting new bits)

Paul was on his E-steed

El Pres was on his faithful (but neglected) Giant – with slipping drivetrain and a bag of excuses

I was on my 26in Five , ageing but reliable (a bit like me)

It was a shortish , but novel route in the familiar territory of Upper Bolingtonia and Kerridge. With a revisiting of the push/carry up “The Quarry Path” to the top of the Ridge

Charlie

(Library photo of the Quarry Path )

I claim the original route idea but there was a democratic debate at a few points – when Paul is in the crew and you ask his opinion you will always get some other ideas ..

20220414-IMG_0248.jpg

A little “hike – a –  bike” in bits but the ridge is always a good place for a view and some good descents – the southern end after the trig is especially good .

20220414-IMG_0232.jpg

The tarmac ascent of Blaze Hill and then returning via Jumper Lane and Oakenbank is much better that way around (all credit to PTD)

Blaze Hill view

(Library photo of the Blaze Hill View )

The Poachers was fairly busy . Voodoo IPA at 4.8 was initially disappointing but got better as you supped …but the barrel had run dry after three pints were pulled.

Our old friends’ Dortmunder Union and Leffe Blonde had to be “ drafted  in “ (tee hee number 2).

Whisky was taken by a select few in the AOE .

TNR 07-04-22 Beasting It

Words by Pete, Pics by Butty and Pete

Dunc climbing Hardingland

Crew : Dunc , Troll, Butty, El Pres , Pete

In the pub: Lee, El Pud

Route : MC , Zig, Teggs Rear Entry, Bottoms Reservoir , Hardingland ascent , Forest Corner, Charity , Extension , Standing Stone, Board Walks descent, Back of the Rezzies, The King’s Head

Conditions : The rain stopped right on cue, the low sunlight made our views magical , the air and the wind were cold . About 5c at 6pm and it dropped to about 3c by midnight

Notes: This week Dunc was our Ops leader . And he did a storming job . He cooked up a novel route and sorted out a table at a revamped King’s Head.

The novelty was also in adding in lots of climb , so that he (the fittest of us all) and the Butty (on e-vehicle) had the advantage . But the views and excellent low evening sunlight made even the pushing up hill bits a pleasure.

On the plateau bit of Teggs we encountered a strange dog walker who appeared to have abandoned all efforts to control the dogs in favour of filming us riding in footpath land. Such is life.

20220407-IMG_0051.jpg

After the forest and tarmac climb from witches cottage Phil was feeling the effects of three days of dodgy guts . A “nakd” bar (that sounds a bit wrong ) seemed to restore him enough to get to the pub. Now I know why I carry 4 of them !

At the apex of charity we get a good sighting of a buzzard disappearing into the canopy of the forest , and the light was now dim enough to bring on the Owl hoots . after the tarmac climb from witches

Dunc & Pete

On the climb to Charity we had also mistaken a bunch of E-chaps climbing the fire road beneath us for a bunch of girls. But were we truly incorrect ?

We made the King’s head dead on 8:30pm, and moments later we had fine ale and nosh on the table in front of us. Another triumph from Dunc  .

But five had become six …as Lee had phoned in his order , had a little forest spin and joined us.

The King’s Head delivered warmth , a great beer selection (Timmy Taylor’s Landlord  & Beavertown Neck Oil !), excellent food and service . Good scampi & chips!

But wait on …yet more surprises…as the prodigal son himself , El Pud, strolls in .

It was as  though Dunc had secretly arranged this guest star to turn up the volume on the Ribaldry Zone .

This unholy concoction made for classic Thursday night 4-star banter .

Whiskey was taken.

A fine TNR indeed.

TNR 31-3-2022 Evil Loops

Words by Pete. Photos by Pete, Butty and Bern

Crew : Butty, Pete , El Pres, The Troll ?, Bern and Dunc

Snow shower over Manchester

Route : Bolly viaduct, Middlewood, Brookledge La, ingersley Rd , west gate of LP. “evil loops” within the park , exit via Red Lane on the Disley side , the Green Lane, Mudhurst Lane , Bow stones , Dale Top, Moorside Lane, Pott Shrigley, The Poachers.

Conditions : Cold, windy and dusty dry . About 4c

Notes

Tonight’s formula was partly a celebration. Butty (and many other enthusiasts of the outdoors ) has been annoyed by the National Trust’s (NT) refusal to return to an 8pm closing time for Lyme Park (LP).

I think he has even been berating the NT on Twitter

Finally LP is now open until 8pm , the sun does not set until well after 7:30pm , and we had dry cold conditions with dynamic low lighting. A great set-up for some LP adventures.

20220331-IMG_9835.jpg

Butty has been researching and devising some entertaining “killer loops” (his words)

Everyone is more or less punctual with the muster time, off north we go to warm legs on the flat before the little climb to the West Gate (WG) .

This entrance to LP always brings good memories back for me. Twenty years ago (yes, you read that right) the park was a frequent feature of my first few months of TNR. When El Pud was our operations leader .

20220331-IMG_9840.jpg

Loop 1 : Climb up from WG then do a little single track on the right hand side which almost brings you back to the gate . Short but very sweet . Classic single track.

Loop 2 : Climb up from WG all the way to the Gate to the car park by the Knott . Hang a right and follow the purpose built MTB track through Hase Bank Wood. I really liked this one, it flows but you have to be careful at the end – Bern had a slight off ! But thankfully emerged unscathed.

Loop 3 : This was actually a series of mini loops around the top of The Knott , short bits with the opportunity to get a bit of “air” for those who dare

This bit was interrupted by the distraction of a very visible squall (of snow I think) giving the evil doers of Manchester a pasting . Great light as the sun dropped

There was just about nobody else in the park . We headed towards the Disley side and encountered a big herd of whiffy deer running around . Maybe 70 or so, mostly hinds with a few young stags. A musty smell as they passed. Quite a sight.

20220404-Lyme Park Map Excerpt.jpg

Out of the park on Green Lane with the Landrover which is slowly rotting into the landscape , and the house with the phone box in the garden. Mudhurst lane was very quiet , hardly a car passed us.

The views of Manchester from here, just after sunset, were still sharp. The plus side of cold, dry air from the North East.

Dusty dry trails deliver us quickly to Dale Top , and full on lights are needed to pick our way down to Moorside lane through the rock field .

In no time we are safely ensconced in the Poachers.   There pub was full of Nancy boys subgroups and us and seemingly no-one else .

Pork, Apple and Black pudding pie was the popular choice, but fine gammon and egg for a weary and hungry Pete .

Dortmund lager to quench the thirst . Only El Pres is on the whiskey finish tonight….others pitched for a second Leffe.

It’s a tough life, eh ?
